I want to express my pride and appreciation for the generosity of our citizens in assisting in Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Many of you have selflessly donated your time and resources to help our friends and family in Southeast Texas.

I am grateful to our first responders who arrived in Houston, before the hurricane even began, and have continued to offer assistance in this great time of need.

Arlington fire and police departments have been providing badly needed manpower and expertise in the Houston and Beaumont areas.

Our faith-based community jumped in to help, from the very beginning, sending supplies and volunteers to Southeast Texas, along with mobilizing and providing shelters for evacuees.

Thank you for showing kindness and love to our neighbors to the south. The "Can Do Spirit of Arlington" is once again making a difference!

Grand Prairie is the biggest small town in Texas!

With IKEA, the Epic Mega-Recreation Center and Epic Waters year-round indoor water park opening soon, we are on the cusp of great change.

Restaurants, retail and new jobs will bring more prosperity to our city in 2018.

Without a doubt, the busiest month on the City of Mansfield calendar is October.

As fall kicks into gear, so do the numerous special events our city is known for; events that bring the community together to support each other, educate our children, beautify our city and have fun with our families.

The first Tuesday in October is the day dedicated by law enforcement agencies for National Night Out. Avoiding the August heat of the traditional observance, police departments across Texas, and in Mansfield, are in neighborhoods getting to know residents and encouraging them to watch out for each other.

Saturday, Oct. 7, is all about cleaning up Mansfield.

Residents can “chunk” their junk and shred documents at the city’s Environmental Collection Center. And if you want to do your part to keep Mansfield beautiful, you can volunteer at the Creekside Clean up and Cookout Our other public safety professionals, the firefighter/paramedics, observe National Fire Prevention Week with some fun designed to educate kids on fire safety.

This year’s Fire Safety Palooza is Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Mansfield Center for the Performing Arts. Demonstrations, fun activities and a chance to check out a fire engine draw thousands to this event each fall.

Last but definitely not least is the annual Fall Festival event at Rose Park. This trick-or-treat alternative event is hosted by the Mansfield Police Department and is set for Saturday, Oct. 28. Kids can dress up for games, entertainment and of course, candy.

• Coca-Cola awarded the Grand Prairie Dasani Water Plant its new SmartWater production line and is investing $33 million in the 25,000-square-foot expansion.

PREPARATORY PLAN

On August 17, 2017, a plan approximately 20 years in the making that began with prayer and resolve, became a reality. At 6:30PM Grace Preparatory Academy and 600 of their closest friends opened the doors to their new 30,000 square foot Student Activity Center. Equipped with state-of-the-art since labs, art studio, weight room, four locker rooms, a full-service cafe, and 1000 seat arena, Grace Prep has become the premier destination for private schooling in Texas.

“We built out the campus, not only because we wanted to, but because we had to” says Head of School Dr. Marc Evans.

“University model schooling is the future. Because we’ve structured our day in such a unique way by putting the needs of our families first, we’ve been able to develop a system that combines academic excellence with student activities that create strong, lasting, character traits. It’s what we call the Grace Prep Way, and it’s catching on.”

For years Grace Prep has been affected by the confines of space - “This year alone we’ve seen over 700 inquires come through our admissions funnel and we’ve accepted nearly 160 new students” says Chris Harper, Dean of Advancement. “Two years ago that would not have been possible, we would not have had the space.”

It is possible now as Grace Prep is poised for growth. New families, new students, and a new facility, Grace Prep is redefining how Texas thinks about school.

In attendance Thursday night were longtime Grace Prep supporters and family. Alumni from all over the state turned out as well local government officials and prominent business leaders in the Arlington and Mansfield area. “This project was the largest undertaking in our schools history” stated Dr. Evan’s at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “From start to completion we’ve trusted in the provision from our Lord, which largely came in and through the generosity of His people. I want to say thank you to the many, many people who helped make this dream a reality. May we continue to train children up in wisdom, and stature, and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52).”

n Tawanna Jenkins’ new book, The ABC’s of Worship, we find Scriptural proof that our Creator is not just watching, but is involved in our lives. Tawanna takes each letter of the alphabet and discusses one or more attributes of God that start with that letter. In this article, we will focus on three of the C’s and one of the E’s. She writes: CARES, CARING Our God cares for us; He is a caring God. As human beings, we may get much of our usage of these words in a negative sense. “I don’t care! I couldn’t care less!” These statements say, “Don’t bother me with it; it’s not important to me; it’s not my concern; I don’t want to have to think about it or deal with it.” I’ve used these phrases, and you probably have, too.

Aren’t you glad to know that our God never says, “I don’t care; I couldn’t care less!” Quite to the contrary, He cares deeply and to the fullest extent possible. He is intimately concerned with His creation.

The Word records that He sees a falling sparrow; in fact, the Amplified text says that one doesn’t fall without His consent! (Matt. 10:29-31).

The text goes on to declare that we are of more value than many sparrows. We serve a God Who cares. I have addressed this next thought in other attributes that I have explored, but I want to once again meditate on this marvelous idea.

The past few months have been action-packed—North Korea, Charlottesville, a full solar eclipse, wildfires in the west, Hurricane Harvey followed by Irma—and those are just the events affecting the United States. In this nation, and in the world, significant and sometimes tragic events have, are, and will continue to occur. Where will those most impacted find relief? Is there a solace beyond that of a friend, a Higher Power who sees, understands and reaches out to us with concern and compassion?

It is this. God cares—is concerned, interested, feels for us, etc.—but not only does He feel for us, He has capability and desire to do something about it. As I noted above, sometimes, we as human beings really may not care, but even if we do care, very often we have ability only to express feelings and give a hug or a smile or a pat on the hand. That is, so often our caring has no real power in it to alleviate suffering or bring relief. As humans, we are limited. God’s care/caring is totally different.

He is interested and concerned and feels for us; and, “Thank you, Lord, You have the power to do something about our pain.” You have the ability to ‘fix it’ when no one else on earth can, and, if for reasons yet unknown to us, You don’t ‘fix it,’ You do hold us tightly, keep us together, and bring us through our difficulties. God’s caring holds with it total ability to set right whatever may be wrong or unjust; repair whatever may be broken; heal what may be sick; or just hold us with the sweetest of embraces when we need to feel that care!

We need to give our cares to our capable and caring God and let Him handle them for us. More often than not, we can’t remedy whatever concerns us, so why don’t we just give our cares to Him? (See I Peter 5:7; 2 Chronicles 16:9).

COMFORT, COMFORTING, COMFORTER How often do we need this attribute of our God! No one passes through life without some sort of sorrow, disappointment or heartbreak. It is at these times that we can run to our Daddy God (Abba) and absorb the comfort that only He can give.

or betrayal, He has the capability to do more than just say something; He has the ability to actually do something about our difficulty. We can go to Him, and He will not reject us. We can, figuratively, sit in His lap as our little ones have done when they needed comfort. As we did with our children, He will wrap His arms around us and pat our backs and say, “It’ll be alright.” And when He says, “It’ll be alright,” it really means something because not only can He say it, He can take the actions to bring it to pass for us, to set the situation right, to alleviate the pain, to mend the broken heart or relationship. No one else can do for us what He can do. I am so glad for the comfort that we can receive from the Comforter! (See Psalm 23:4; Psalm 94:19; Psalm 119:52) ENOUGH It was reported that a multi-millionaire of yesteryear was once asked the following question. “How much is enough?” The rich man answered, “Just a little bit more.” However, most of us may answer that question in what might be considered a more reasonable manner.

Enough food is an amount sufficient to nourish our bodies and to keep our energy levels sufficiently high to perform whatever activities are part of our lives. Enough clothing is clothing that is adequate to keep us warm in winter and (relatively) comfortable in summer.

Enough gasoline is a quantity that will take us at least to the next service station. Enough money is an amount sufficient to buy any items actually needed or to pay any bills coming due before our next paycheck or other support comes.

Whatever your desire level, however much you need to fill whatever vacuum, large or small, our God is ENOUGH. And the beauty of that thought is this: even if there are things lacking in other arenas, having the Presence and Power of God operating strongly in our lives will overflow to fill other vacuums—not enough friends, He will be your Friend. Not enough money, He will meet those needs as you walk in covenant relationship with Him. Not enough strength, He will carry you. In every area of your life, God is enough if you allow Him to fill that spot. When I have enough, I am no longer needy. 1. Get your exercise

Regular exercise is probably the closest we can get to a fountain of youth. According to the National Cancer Institute, regular exercise helps control weight, maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints, and reduces our risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes.

Further, about 260,000 deaths per year in the U.S. are attributable to the lack of physical activity.

Many exercise authorities suggest 30 minutes of exercise, 5-6 days a week, giving your body one day to rest and recuperate. The exercise doesn’t have to be a gut-wrenching, iron-man type experience. Something as simple as a brisk 30-minute walk can work wonders for your health and literally add years to your life. And it can be supplemented by taking the stairs at work, a 10-15 minute walk during lunch, or having a small pedaling device at your desk.

The main thing is to find exercise that you enjoy, not something that’s an ordeal.

2. Always eat breakfast

Research shows that people who have breakfast tend to take in more vitamins and minerals and less fat and cholesterol. Eating things that are high in fiber and proteins keeps you feeling full and energized. These include whole-grain cereals and breads, low-fat milk, fruit, and yogurt.

3. Practice healthy eating throughout the day This habit includes such things as eating more fruit and nuts and avoiding sugary drinks and snacks. At meal time, the American Heart Association recommends a serving of fish twice a week. Besides being a rich source of protein, fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, lake trout, herring, sardines, and albacore tuna) have omega-3 fatty acids which reduce the threat of heart disease.

It’s a truism that most of us want to live long, happy, successful, and healthy lives.

Unfortunately, in our pursuit of success we often take shortcuts with our health—and wind up suffering from various ailments and disabilities that we could have avoided.

It doesn’t have to be that way at all. Though many of us live stressful, demanding lives, with just a little tweaking here and there, we can develop

habits that will help us live healthier and more productive lives.

There is no shortage of information available on suggested tips for living a healthy lifestyle—one book we saw suggested no less than 107 healthy habits! We won’t get that exhaustive, but we pinpointed the most prevalent seven healthy habits that anyone should be able to include in their daily lives.

Don’t forget portion control. If you want to live to be 100, go for larger portions of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and consume smaller portions of higher calorie foods containing large amounts of sugar and fats.

WELLNESS And chew your food! Many nutritionists recommend chewing each mouthful 20-30 times to get it into its most digestible form. Studies have also shown that chewing slowly reduces calorie intake by about 10%, partly because it takes your stomach about 20 minutes to tell the brain that it’s full.

Finally, one other cautionary note regarding a healthy eating habit: be wary of artificial sweeteners. A study conducted over a 10-year period at the University of Manitoba and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that artificial sweeteners may be associated with an increased risk of obesity, long-term weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Dr. Meghan Azad, chief author of the CMAJ article, commented, “Most people consuming artificial sweeteners do so assuming these products will help them avoid weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. Yet we are seeing the opposite association from multiple studies.”

4. Stay hydrated Getting the proper amount of water is extremely important as every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies needs water. Traditionally we’re told we need eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, an amount that’s never been substantiated medically. Perhaps a better guide is to try to drink enough water that you urinate once every 2-4 hours, and the urine is light in color.

To help develop and keep this habit, many devices, from “smart bottles” to numerous free apps, are readily accessible to keep you properly hydrated.

5. Don’t neglect dental hygiene At the end of a long day, how many take the time to floss? Some studies indicate that regular flossing could add over 6 years to your life. Why? The theory is that the bacteria that produce dental plaque enter the bloodstream and are somehow associated with inflammation that blocks blood vessels and causes heart disease. So, get in the habit of giving your teeth a good bedtime flossing and add years to your life.

6. Get your sleep Sleep is crucial to our wellbeing. As we sleep, the brain clears away the debris of the day’s work while resetting and restoring nerve networks so that they can function fully when we wake.

We all know the most common effects caused by the lack of sleep—drowsiness, fatigue, lack of focus, and forgetfulness. But the consequences of sleep deprivation may go far beyond the well-known, and have possibly long-lasting effects on your brain. One recent study from Italy suggests that the consistent lack of sleep may cause the brain to start destroying itself.

Stated simply, the Italian researchers worked with mice, some getting as much sleep as they wanted while others were subjected to extreme sleep deprivation. The researchers then studied the activity of the glial cells that act as the brain’s caretakers, sweeping out unneeded brain cell connectors (a kind of brain junk) to keep the brain functioning normally. They found that the glial cells were far more active in the sleep deprived mice, and it’s possible that this hyper-sweeping/destructive activity may contribute to Alzheimer’s and other brain disorders.

To avoid this potential threat, develop the habit of getting a solid 7-9 hours of sleep. If you’re having trouble dozing off, keep your bedtime routine free of TV, laptop, cell phone, and other devices, and give your brain some genuine downtime.

7. Challenge yourself We all get into ruts, doing the same things day after day, but to keep both body and mind agile, get into the habit of taking on challenges. And don’t feel embarrassed about not being an expert. Remember that every expert was once also a beginner.

Take some art lessons and find your inner van Gogh.

How about learning another language? Your local library probably has language programs available at no cost to members. And there are plenty of free online language apps like Duolingo to help you.

Never had a chance to play a musical instrument?

Get a harmonica for less than $30, along with some instructional CDs. Practicing 30 minutes or so a day (great relaxation therapy), you’ll soon amaze your friends with the beautiful songs you can play.

As we said, the list of healthy habits is virtually endless. We think these suggestions will lead you to a healthier life, but you need to be true to yourself. Find the healthy habits that work for you, whether they’re ours or from others, and stick with them!

What’s the Best Time to Exercise?

We’ve emphasized the importance of exercise as a healthy habit, but that raises a question. Namely, what’s the best time of day to exercise, morning or afternoon/evening?

Actually, as researchers at healthline.com point out, you can make a case for either.

MORNING WORKOUT

The benefits of a morning workout include: • You get your workout done before 9 a.m., accomplishing something some people won’t accomplish all day, a huge ego boost. You’ll also start the day with a brain charged with endorphins, chemicals that leave your brain feeling happy and relaxed.

• You burn more fat. Those who start their exercise routine on an empty stomach burn about 20 percent more body fat than those exercising later in the day.

• A morning exercise boosts your metabolism which means you’ll be burning calories throughout the day as you consume them.

• Morning exercise helps many people get more quality sleep at night, while an evening workout that revs up your system might make sleep more difficult.

AFTERNOON/EVENING WORKOUT

Benefits include: • You can probably get some extra sleep in the morning.

• Your body temperature peaks between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., and this elevated temperature optimizes your muscle function and strength, as well as your endurance.

• Oxygen uptake kinetics are faster in the evening, and that means you use your resources more slowly and effectively than in the morning.

• In the afternoon or evening, your reaction time is at its quickest, while your heart rate and blood pressure are lowest, all decreasing your chances of injury while improving your performance.

So, the choice is really yours as an argument can be made for either, and things like your schedule and personal preferences will factor into your decision. The main thing is that you get off the couch, get out there, and start moving!

WELLNESS KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER Don’t rely solely on your annual screening mammogram to detect breast cancer. Be aware of changes in your breasts by performing a monthly breast self-exam (you can find easy to follow instructions online) and know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society lists the following signs, and urges you to report anything out of the ordinary to your health care provider as soon as possible.

STANDING UP TO BREAST CANCER LAURA CELEBRATES TWO YEARS CANCER-FREE POST TREATMENT

Catching breast cancer early saves lives. Women can discover they have a potentially cancerous lump in many ways—even before other breast cancer symptoms appear—through screening mammograms, by their physician performing a clinical breast exam, or through a breast self-exam. In Laura’s case, a tumor was discovered during a nuclear medicine cardiac stress test.

Thankfully, her heart was just fine, but the dye introduced into her bloodstream for the test found its way to a tumor in her breast, which showed up in the images.

“I was shocked. Never would I have believed I’d be walking out of a cardiac stress test with the knowledge that I may have breast cancer,” says Laura, a busy municipal court magistrate. “I have no family history of breast cancer, I do regular breast self-exams, I have not been on hormone replacement therapy, and my doctor had recently performed a clinical breast exam without finding anything unusual.”

INCLUDING HER GRANDDAUGHTER An important part of Laura’s journey with breast cancer treatment and recovery involved her young granddaughter. How a child reacts to a family member’s cancer diagnosis often depends on how the adults handle the crisis. Of course, every situation and every child is different. Laura’s decision to include her granddaughter was a natural one.

“She went to counseling with us and to many of my medical appointments as well. Including her instead of enveloping everything in a shroud of mystery helped all of us get through the ordeal in a healthier manner, emotionally and psychologically,” Laura adds.

• A new lump or mass. A painless, hard mass that has irregular edges is more likely to be cancer, but breast cancers can also be tender, soft, or rounded.

They can even be painful.

• Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt).

• Skin irritation or dimpling.

• Breast or nipple pain.

• Nipple retraction (turning inward).

• Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin.

• Nipple discharge (other than breast milk).

• Sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes under the arm or around the collarbone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast tissue is large enough to be felt.

• Swollen lymph nodes should also be checked by a health care provider.

FACING REALITY, READY TO FIGHT Laura followed up with diagnostic testing. Her biopsy confirmed she had estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Today, doctors can test cancer cells for characteristics that include what receptors, if any, are present on the cell surface. This testing is important because available treatment options can be highly dependent on the results.

“My doctor called me with the news on a Friday night. I hung up the phone in disbelief, then my thoughts immediately went to my spouse and our granddaughter, whom we are raising together. I knew I wanted to help raise this child. I didn’t want to die,” Laura shares. “I resolved to face breast cancer head on and to overcome it.”

WELLNESS Laura and her family were in a daze for a while about the diagnosis. During the second meeting with the oncologist, she was told her cancer was “curable.” Her spouse asked, “Yes, but is this treatment going to kill her?”

They knew it would be a rough ride ahead, yet Laura stood courageous and her family was committed to helping her through it.

THE NEW NORMAL After undergoing a mastectomy, Laura started chemotherapy and radiation therapy. All the while, she continued to work.

“My life didn’t revolve solely around the cancer. I had treatment on Thursdays, took Fridays off, then went back to work each Monday morning,” Laura explains.

“This gave me something else to focus on, in addition to helping raise our granddaughter.

A friend of mine who quit working after her breast cancer diagnosis later told me she believes I chose the better option. Everyone is unique, but I know that continuing to work was the right decision for me.”

Now, two years post-chemotherapy, Laura is cancer-free. She takes medication that helps prevent estrogen from activating new cancer cell growth. This type of treatment is common for women diagnosed with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.

“The medication has some unwelcome side effects—it’s like I’m going through menopause again—and my spouse has been very supportive and understanding.

I accept my life today as the new normal, and stick to what my doctor tells me to do,” Laura says.

While a breast cancer diagnosis is scary and heartbreaking, modern medicine offers more treatment options than ever before to help you win the fight. And remember, the earlier breast cancer is detected, the better your chances for a good outcome.

Causing more deaths than AIDS and breast cancer combined, diabetes is a serious disease that nearly doubles a person’s chance of having a heart attack when it isn’t properly controlled.

Although people understand that diabetes is a disease they should avoid, many myths surround diabetes, its causes, how diabetics deal with their condition, and especially what role ingested sugar plays. Here are some truths about diabetes and its relationship with sugar.

First of all, diabetes is a disease where the body produces too much sugar or glucose in the bloodstream. Glucose fuels our bodies’ cells and is necessary for our bodies to function. However, glucose can gradually damage various organs and neurological functions if blood sugar levels are consistently too high.

DOES EATING TOO MUCH SUGAR CAUSE DIABETES? The causes of diabetes are much more complicated than to say it comes from only one source. Both types of diabetes largely stem from genetics, but they are also triggered and exacerbated by environmental factors including sugary and high-carb foods. To help prevent or postpone diabetes, the American Diabetes Association recommends avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages in particular. Excessively consuming sugary drinks and foods can contribute to earlier onset of diabetes in those with predispositions for diabetes, but sugar is certainly not the only culprit.

CAN DIABETICS EVER HAVE SUGAR? People without diabetes are encouraged to follow the same guidelines that those with diabetes are told. With healthy diet and exercise, diabetics can have limited portions of sugar and chocolate just like everyone else—as long as they stick to a healthy meal plan. With some discipline, diabetics can eat the foods they love while keeping their blood sugar levels under control.

FRUIT IS HEALTHY, SO DIABETICS CAN EAT AS MUCH FRUIT AS THEY WANT, RIGHT? Many fruits have amazing benefits like fiber, vitamins, and minerals, but they also have carbohydrates and high amounts of sugar that can spike blood sugar levels in diabetics. Just like with other foods, diabetics need to exercise moderation, monitor their levels, and demonstrate control. Fortunately, those who live with diabetes can learn over time how their bodies react to certain foods, so they can also learn how to compensate accordingly.

CAN DIABETICS TELL WHEN THEIR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS ARE TOO HIGH WITHOUT TESTING? Although some people feel moody or “hangry” when their blood sugar levels nose dive, many people experience no noticeable symptoms when their blood sugar levels spike. In 2015, about one-third of adults with diabetes didn’t even realize they had it, according to the American Diabetes Association.

If We Humble Ourselves, Will God Heal Our Land?

Israelites on Mt. Sinai. Moses restates the law in the book of Deuteronomy, chapters 5–26, to the new generation of Israelites that Joshua is about to lead into the Promised Land. The presiding theme?

God’s blessing hinges on the Israelites’ obedience.

So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the LORD your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul—then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine, and olive oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

—Deuteronomy 11:13–15 And on the heels of this rich promise comes a warning.

A recent Facebook post has me shaking my head: California is on fire, Oregon is on fire, Montana is on fire, areas of Canada are on fire, Texas is underwater, Idaho had a 5.3 earthquake, North Korea just tested their 6th nuclear bomb causing a 6.3 explosion quake, and Irma is now the most powerful category 5 hurricane in over a decade.

If you don’t know Jesus yet, now’s a pretty good time to get to know Him. Right?!

Disasters drive us to our knees, and sometimes to our faces—a good and appropriate response. Desperate for comfort and hope, we cling to Scripture as to a life raft.

But are we clinging to the right verses?

Only a moment after I saw the Facebook post I also noticed a tweet circulating in the form of a meme.

A tattered, waving flag was overlaid with the bold exhortation to “Pray for America,” a sentiment with which I heartily agree. Underneath were the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14: If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Can we, as Americans, claim this ancient verse for ourselves?

The short answer is no, but don’t run off quite yet. I can explain.

The number one rule in Bible study

Solomon sends the people away “joyful and glad of heart for the prosperity that the LORD had granted to David and to Solomon and to Israel his people (v. 10, ESV).”

The LORD responds to Solomon’s dedication in verse 12, assuring the king that He has heard his prayer and has chosen the temple as the place where His Name will dwell.

Now look at verses 13 and 14 together: “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them. Then the LORD’s anger will burn against you, and He will shut up the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce, and you will soon perish from the good land the LORD is giving you.

In other words, when the Israelites turn from the LORD (and in just one short generation they will, sadly, following Solomon’s lead), the LORD will execute the judgments laid out centuries earlier in the Mosaic covenant. But, if God’s people will humble themselves, pray, turn again to their Scriptures, and cease all idolatry, God will forgive them and restore the blessing.

—Deuteronomy 11:16–17

So let’s ask ourselves a few questions.

through hurricanes, floods, and wildfires. Neither can we say He is rewarding the pockets of the country that did not sustain damage. Christianity is not on the blessing/curse plan. Christ has already taken the curse upon His shoulders for us. Our primary job now is to urgently seek out the lost and introduce them to Christ.

At the same time, let us certainly humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God (Jas 4:7). Let us earnestly beg and plead for our nation and its leaders (Rom 13:1).

Let us never stop seeking His face (Jas 4:8). Let us submit ourselves to the authority of Scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17) and profess our love to Christ through our obedience (Jn 14:15).

Was 2 Chronicles 7:14 written to us?

No. But all of Scripture was written for us to help us grow in our knowledge of God and our likeness to Christ (2 Tim 3:16-17).

So then, brothers and sisters, as the Bride of Christ, let us humble ourselves. Let us pray together in the name of Christ and by the power of His Holy Spirit, that He would drive us to repentance as we seek His face, and in His mercy, heal our wickedness and make us more like Him.

is establishing context. That means, before we grab a verse and put on our youth group’s shirts, we ask ourselves a few questions.

God gave the Israelites a clear and simple choice: obey and enjoy the blessing, or disobey and suffer the curse.

Was this passage of Scripture written to Americans in 2017?

Perhaps then, by His grace, the Church will be the blessing through which America finds healing.

No, but that’s actually good news.

Who wrote the book/letter?

Whom did they write it to?

Why did they write it?

How did the original audience understand it?

You and I are not under the Mosaic Law, and the blessing (eternal life with Christ) does not hinge on our obedience—it hinges on our faith.

The good news is that we are not under the law. Whether or not we are acceptable to God has nothing to do with whether or not we fulfill the law.

So let’s take a second look at 2 Chronicles.

Most scholars believe that either Ezra or an anonymous scribe they’ve dubbed “The Chronicler” wrote both First and Second Chronicles to chronicle the history of the Israelites through the monarchy, giving special attention to proper worship.

Chapter seven opens with the dedication of the newly built temple. Solomon offered the prescribed sacrifices and burnt offerings (for the forgiveness of sins and worship), and then fire comes down from heaven, and the “glory of the LORD filled the temple.”

The better news is that we are under grace. We are acceptable to God because Christ perfectly fulfilled the law on our behalf.

The original audience of the book was under the Mosaic or Sinaitic covenant—the law given to Moses for the

We are saved by grace through faith in Christ, not by what we do. Otherwise, we would become proud (like the Israelites) and boast of ourselves (see Eph. 2:8–9).

Instead of putting down the curler for good (let’s be realistic here!) take preventive measures to better care for your hair. Unless you’re using a blow dryer, style hair when it’s completely dry and adjust the temperature to be gentle on your hair texture. Thin or fine hair can be more fragile than thicker hair, and doesn’t need the extra heat.

One important step that’s easy to overlook is the use of heat protectant products. Always apply a heat protectant spray before styling to help beat the heat, but keep in mind that these products only reduce the amount of damage caused by heat styling. The best thing you can do for your hair—bear with me here—is to give it a break. Your hair will thank you in the long run for going a few days a week without styling. These days are the perfect time for that cute up-do you’ve been meaning to try!

EXFOLIATE AND HYDRATE TO LOOK FRESH AND DEWY Thankfully we don’t shed dead skin cells like a snake, but they do tend to stick around, which makes our skin feel rough and lack a radiant glow.

These skin cells also make it more difficult for the new layer of fresh skin underneath to absorb products.

A gentle exfoliation once or twice a week with a textured scrub or loofah rids your skin of both dirt and dead cells, and it’s not just for the face. So go ahead each week and take a muchdeserved night to pamper yourself with a soak and a scrub-down.

Afterwards, be sure to moisturize all

over your body, neck, and face. A few sprays of coconut water facial mist will give you a boost during the day, as it is thought to have hydrating and anti-aging properties.

Two health hazards you cannot afford to ignore are lead paint and radon. Lead is known to cause brain damage in developing fetuses and children, while radon is a cancercausing gas. If your home was built before 1978, you may want to call in a professional for lead paint testing.

Many who blame their coughing and wheezing on pet dander or pollen are really reacting to mold spores in their homes. Mold flourishes in high humidity, so do all you can to keep household moisture under control.

Keep an eye out for leaks of any kind and dripping faucets. And make sure that all space heaters, furnaces, gas logs, and fireplaces are properly calibrated and well vented. They not only produce carbon monoxide but can also drench the air with water vapor.

Radon is odorless and tasteless and comes from the breakdown of rock and soil beneath your house, and any home old or new can have radon.

For around $20 you can buy a radon tester at many hardware stores. Also, check the Environmental Protection Agency’s web site for “A Citizen’s Guide to Radon.”

BE PREPARED FOR FIRE

Have a smoke alarm in every room and test them monthly. It’s also not a bad idea to have a multipurpose fire extinguisher nearby. And if you have to use it, remember PASS: • Pull the pin.

• Aim at the base of the fire.

• Squeeze or press the handle.

To check the humidity in your home, you might want to purchase a moisture meter (hygrometer), available at many hardware stores, and if the humidity in your home is higher than 50%, purchase a dehumidifier to tackle the problem.

We took a scenic route to Bend from Portland—a bit out of the way, but worth it—skirting part of the Mount Hood National Forest. The road wound along miles of jaw-dropping scenery where fragile mists hung thinly among the towering pines and clear mountainfed streams tumbled down rocky beds.

After passing through a handful of tiny outpost-ish mountain villages, we exited the forest and made our way to the high desert.

Pulling into Tetherow—a luxury boutique hotel and golf resort—we felt a surge of energy. Our beautifully furnished suite, complete with a well-

stocked coffee bar and a comfy leather sofa facing a gas fireplace, overlooked Tetherow’s 18-hole championship Scottish-style link golf course. Past the course, snow-capped mountain tops peeked above the horizon.

We decided to dine at Solomon’s at Tetherow, and what a gem it was!

Offering unpretentious luxury, Solomon’s expansive windows frame open skies and sweeping golf course views. With a fabulous wine list and a Pacific Northwest-inspired menu that includes wild game along with beef, seafood, chicken, and vegetarian dishes, we wished we could order everything on the menu.

ADVENTURE Meeting Solomon’s Executive Chef, Rian Mulligan, was a real treat.

His creativity and talent shine on a changing menu he crafts from scratch.

Chef Rian says his culinary inspiration comes from his heart, and it’s evident in his eclectic style. Even his small plates are deliciously inventive. The crispy zucchini and summer squash noodles with chevre and pepita Romesco sauce—divine!

At sunrise, we sipped coffee on our generous private balcony, enjoyed Scotch eggs and a refreshing agave fruit mint salad at The Row, then hit downtown Bend. Filled with more than 200 unique shops and boutiques, the Bend vibe is trendy and understated.

That afternoon, we drove 35 minutes to Smith Rock State Park. Its cliffs are ideal for rock climbing and there are miles of hiking trails. After our 2.5mile river trail walk, we stopped at the Deschutes Brewery, the place where Bend’s bustling craft brew industry began.

Wineries and Vintage Trailers Willamette Valley wineries were up next on the trip. Home to more than 500 wineries, the Willamette Valley is known for its world-class Pinot noirs.

We decided to try something different and stayed in a refurbished vintage trailer at The Vintages Trailer Resort, located in the middle of Oregon’s wine country. I couldn’t wait to relive some of my childhood memories of times spent in my parent’s blue and white Bee Line camper. Check-in was a breeze and the folks at the front desk were super friendly, but the real fun came when we stepped into our immaculate camper. At the day’s end, we kicked back in our camper’s lawn chairs and mapped out the wineries we wanted to tour.

Up early the next day, we tooled around back roads, visited tasting rooms ranging from contemporary to rustic, and enjoyed many superb wines.

Luckily, my husband volunteered to be the designated driver!

Idyllic Cannon Beach Driving up U.S. Route 101 along the Pacific coastline made us wish we had rented a convertible. We passed through coastal towns and old growth forests, and crossed over historic bridges and picturesque bays. Arriving at the Surfsand Resort in Cannon Beach, we popped into our nicelyappointed oceanfront suite, and were thrilled to have an unobstructed view of Haystack Rock. The pet and kidfriendly Surfsand—a Sunset Travel Award winner—has thought of everything for a family on vacation.

Their program, Surfsand Kids, offers daily craft projects, beach toys and beach cruiser bikes, weenie roasts, ice cream socials, storybooks, and much more. Of course, adults and children alike love the nightly beach bonfire with s’mores.

An early dinner at the woodsy oceanfront Wayfarer Restaurant was to-die-for. Executive Chef Josh Archibald embraces Oregon’s sustainable, locavore food movement.

I feasted on troll-caught seared salmon and my husband enjoyed a forktender steak accompanied by freshly foraged wild morel mushrooms, lightly sautéed. Afterward, a walk along the beach helped us work off our meal. We explored Haystack Rock—a seasonal haven for tufted puffins—which is surrounded by colorful tidal pools with starfish, anemones, and limpets.

The next day we strolled along the quaint streets of Cannon Beach,

chock-full of cute shops, cafes, kite stores, and ice cream parlors. Lunch at Public Coast Brewing Company provided sustenance before our long afternoon hike at Ecola State Park, perched dramatically on the edge of Tillamook Head. We enjoyed food and drink from Coastal Brewing’s convivial brew master, Will Leroux, and the nicely designed pub comes with large windows through which you watch the brew master working his magic.

Famished after hours of hiking along the coast and in the forest, we dined at The Stephanie Inn—an elegant, upscale family-owned oceanfront boutique hotel and restaurant with richly appointed guest rooms and a luxury day spa. I was glad I brought along a gorgeous, lightweight scarf by Yala (headquartered in Eugene, Oregon) which doubled as a fashionable wrap for the evening.

The Stephanie Inn’s award-winning Executive Chef Aaron Bedard, who has a wonderfully down-to-earth personality, talked with us about his passion for sourcing ingredients from local farms, foragers, and fishermen.

Our gourmet prix-fixe multicourse dinner was, of course, exquisite.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Season chicken thighs with salt and pepper. In a medium bowl whisk together extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, brown sugar, and garlic. Add chicken to the marinade and stir to coat. Let marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.

cup extra virgin olive oil cups chopped parsnips, peeled cups green beans, trimmed teaspoon dried oregano teaspoon dried thyme teaspoon dried basil teaspoon salt teaspoon black pepper

Preheat oven to 375°F. In a large bowl, add parsnips, green beans, olive oil, oregano, thyme, basil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat the vegetables.

Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread vegetables in an even layer on lined baking sheet. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

Bistro Fall Salad with Apple Fennel Vinaigrette For the salad: 3 cups mixed greens 1 large green apple, sliced ½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup whole pecans ½ cup crumbled feta cheese For the apple fennel vinaigrette: ½ chopped granny smith apple ½ cup chopped fennel ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon sugar ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt and pepper In the bowl of a food processor, add all of the ingredients for the vinaigrette. Puree until combined.

Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a medium bowl. Set vinaigrette aside.

To assemble the salad, toss together mixed greens, green apple, dried cranberries, pecans, and crumbled feta cheese. Divide the salad between two bowls. Serve with vinaigrette.

Like a little more funk in your cheese? Try subbing in blue cheese for feta cheese. A little less funk?

FOOD FIGHT! Tonic Water vs. Seltzer Water vs. Mineral Water vs. Club Soda

With more and more Americans—and especially young Americans—choosing to forego heavily sugared soda in favor of other beverages, we’re seeing one clear trend bubble to the top. Classic takes on plain old water are positively effervescent in the minds of today’s savvy consumers. But do you know which water’s which?

Mineral water The crème de la crème of waters, mineral water comes from a mineral spring that contains various naturally-occurring salts, sulfur compounds, and other minerals.

It is often naturally carbonated as well, owing to trapped gases.

Nothing is added to mineral water, and the effervescence is natural (though some brands add extra, artificial carbonation for a fizzier water). Mineral water has a distinctive taste, and will usually carry a price premium.

Seltzer water If you’re looking for the fizzy feel of soda without the sugar, seltzer water is for you. It’s plain tap water that’s been carbonated, and that’s about it!

Some seltzer water is available with mild flavoring, usually in flavors like lemon, lime, orange, or berry, via a touch of citric acid or an essential oil.

Seltzer water contains no salts or other additives. (The name is said to have originated from the town of Selters in Germany, which became known for its Selterswasser more than 200 years ago.)

Club soda Some will swear that club soda is identical to seltzer water, but true club soda contains some trace added minerals like potassium bicarbonate or potassium sulfate where seltzer water does not.

Aside from this the drink is essentially indistinguishable from seltzer, but some devotees swear there is a detectable—although very mild— difference in taste.

Tonic water If you’ve ever enjoyed the distinctively bitter fizz of a gin and tonic, you’re familiar with tonic water.

Tonic water starts as seltzer water, but takes on a transformation as a medicine called quinine is added.

Historically used as a treatment for malaria, tonic water once contained higher doses of quinine that gave it a strong and bitter flavor.

Today, quinine is added in relatively low, non-medicinal quantities to create tonic water. Consequently, modern tonic water is less bitter and usually sweetened.

Check the nutrition labels! Some tonic waters can contain as much sugar as soda. Unsweetened traditional-style tonic water is available, but less common.
