letter from the publisher
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.”
1 Peter 3:12
One of the many reasons my family and I love living in the Arlington/Mansfield area is the abundance of outstanding healthcare providers right in our backyard. From general practitioners to specialists, from dental professionals to mental-health providers, people travel from all over the country—and even the world—to access the medical expertise we have right here. In this month’s Top Healthcare Provider section, we highlight a few of them.
As you read this, I’d like to issue a challenge. The next time you visit a healthcare provider, at the end of your visit, ask them, “How can I pray for you?” James 5:16 tells us, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” Our healthcare heroes give so much to us. This is one way we can give back.
I hope you and your family are enjoying this beautiful time of year. Autumn can be busy time with school activities, football season, and preparation for the holidays. In the midst of it all though, let’s not forget to focus on God and make the most of every precious moment of the season He has created. Let me say with the psalmist, “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12)

OCTOBER 24 // THE CHRISTMAS
BY JANICE HALLETT
APPEAL
The Christmas season has arrived in Lower Lockwood, and the Fairway Players are busy rehearsing their festive holiday production of Jack and the Beanstalk to raise money for a new church roof. But despite the season, goodwill is distinctly lacking among the amateur theater enthusiasts with petty rivalries, a possibly asbestos-filled beanstalk, and some perennially absent players behind the scenes.
Of course, there’s also the matter of the dead body onstage. Who could possibly have had the victim on their naughty list? Join lawyers Femi and Charlotte as they investigate Christmas letters, examine emails, and pore over police transcripts to identify both the victim and killer before the curtain closes on their holiday production — for good.

FROM SHEPHERDS to clowns
THE PERIL OF THE MODERN CHURCH!
BY MIKE MAZYCK
18 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | octcober 2023 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE
“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance with their own desires.”
– 2 Timothy 4:1-3
As the Apostle Paul sat in a Roman prison, awaiting his execution, he penned those words to Timothy. They are found towards the very end of what was, in all likelihood, his last communication to this young preacher. They were part of his last words! He used those words to warn Timothy that a day was coming when men would no longer tolerate the kind of teaching that would nourish and save their own soul. Instead, they would find teachers who would tell them what they wanted to hear. Things they enjoyed hearing. Things that made them feel good! Nevertheless, Paul admonished Timothy to remain faithful to the words he spoke.
The great Charles Spurgeon, commonly referred to as the “Prince of Preachers,” seemed to echo these words of Paul’s when he said, “The time will come when instead of shepherds feeding the sheep, the church will have clowns entertaining the goats.”
My friends, please hear me when I say: That time has come! We are NOW living in the days of which these great men spoke. We live in a generation that has access to more churches and more teaching than any other generation before us. And yet, true shepherds are rarer than ever. Sound doctrine has fallen victim to the laws of supply and demand.
But why? Why would men not want sound doctrine? Why wouldn’t they want the very food their soul is craving? For the same reason, a child would rather eat ice cream and candy three meals a day than meat and vegetables — the ice cream and candy taste yummy. The meat and vegetables do not. The stubborn and immature child sits at the dinner table, angry about what he sees on the plate in front of him. The parent looks on, caring only about one thing — the nourishment of their child.
Paul summed it up best when he said, “...they will no longer endure sound doctrine.” The dictionary defines the word endure as “to suffer (something difficult or painful) patiently.” Sound doctrine must be endured! Sound doctrine can be painful! Sound doctrine can make you feel like that stubborn, angry child sitting at the table, despising what lies in front of you. Many years ago, I read the book, “Money, Possessions, and Eternity” by Randy Alcorn. This book impacted my
life so greatly that I now keep extra copies on hand and give them away every chance I get. But as much as I love this book now, I remember something else about reading it. It was painful and convicting. It struck a nerve in my flesh. Maybe I should be more clear: It was a direct assault on all my worldly ambitions — my entire way of life. But at the same time, I knew I was reading truth. I was reading sound doctrine, built upon the Word, written by a shepherd who had not compromised. I had to keep going. I had to suffer through it, and I am so grateful I did. Although it was bitter medicine going down, it brought much healing in the end.
Alcorn’s book is only one example, but I could list countless more, and not just books. I’m most certainly talking about sermons and other forms of teaching as well. Throughout my life, the teachers and messages that have always yielded the most fruit were the ones I had to endure
My friend, we are living in an extremely dangerous time. It is this generation that Spurgeon and the Apostle Paul warned us about. They saw a day when we would be surrounded by tables of ice cream and candy, where instead of faithful shepherds preaching boldly behind church pulpits, we would have auditoriums and stages — clowns and entertainers!
Do you want to grow strong in your walk with the Lord? Do you want to experience more of the Fruit of the Spirit in your life? I encourage you today: Endure sound doctrine. Seek out teaching that is hard and difficult to tolerate. Teaching that assaults your fleshly ambitions and desires. Turn aside from teachers and doctrines that tickle your ears. Be on guard against sanctuaries filled with entertainment, jokes, and laughter every week. There is no need to waste your Sunday mornings on things that a simple streaming subscription will provide. Find men who preach the Word boldly and endure their teaching so that you may grow strong in the things of God!
If you would like a list of pastors, teachers, and messages that must be endured, please find my blog post titled “A List to be Endured” at mikemazyck.com

MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTAL
PATIENTS SING THE PRAISES OF THIS HOMETOWN DENTAL PRACTICE
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Emma has to admit she’s a bit of a dental chicken. Yet even she has to rave about the experience she had at Mansfield Family Dental. “I was in town visiting from New York and lost a crown at 5:00 on a Friday evening. I called the after-hours number at Mansfield Family Dental and Dr. John Bauer met me at the office. I kept apologizing but he was so nice he convinced me it was no bother at all. He fixed me up with a temporary crown until I could get home and see my own dentist. If I lived
closer this would definitely be my dental practice for life.”
That’s just one of the enthusiastic online reviews for this hometown family dental practice. Another had this to say. “This family is beyond amazing, Both Dr. Bauers are amazing, very kind and helpful and truly make you feel comfortable and for me with severe dental fears, that truly means a lot. Terri is exceptionally good at making you feel comfortable and helping guide you through your dental work with the least amount of stress
and they all make me laugh. The whole office including the ladies at the front desk make it a good experience. I highly recommend them. I'm very thankful to have found Mansfield Family Dental.” And this review was particularly touching. “We reached out to a Mansfield talk page to ask for recommendations of a dentist in the area who could see my daughter quickly and compassionately because she had recently been diagnosed with brain cancer. She needed to have her teeth checked before she started chemo and

radiation to try to cut down on the damage the treatments might cause. Not only did they get her in lightning fast, the kindness they showed us was overwhelming. I have been trying to think of what I wanted to write so I could explain exactly how this has affected me. I have yet to find the words to describe how I feel because I have never seen so much kindness and compassion from a business as I have the Mansfield Family Dentistry. They are the epitome of what this world should have more of every day. Thank you, Cody Bauer, Terri Bauer, and John Bauer. You have made a huge impact on us and we promise to pay the kindness forward.”
This family-owned dental practice is just that—a family. From husband and wife, Dr. John Bauer and his officemanager wife, Terri, to their son, Dr. Cody Bauer, and longtime staff who have become like family, they are Mansfield’s best caring for their Mansfield neighbors. Dr. John and Dr. Cody begin seeing patients as soon as they’re ready to sit in the chair for routine cleaning. And the Bauer family offers them—and their parents and grandparents—everything from simple cleanings or filling to complete cosmetic procedures including teeth straightening and full-mouth makeovers. In fact, once a patient is comfortable under their care, there’s no need for them to be referred elsewhere for special services.
All the care they need can be found under one roof. “When we realize, during a routine check-up, for instance, that a patient needs a root canal, tooth extraction, or dental implant
or when they inquire about a cosmetic procedure, we don’t want to refer them out to an unfamiliar dental practice,” Dr. John said. “Cody and I have undertaken hundreds of hours of continuing education every year and investing in the latest, cuttingedge dental technology, so we can provide our patients with cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, Invisalign clear braces, and permanent dental implants, right here in their dental home.”
Drs. John and Cody believe strongly in patient education and empowerment. “We want you to be your own best oral health advocate,” Dr. Cody said. “It’s not just about the health of your teeth but your overall health, as more is being discovered about the affect your oral health has on the rest of your body and on your chances of developing conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. We take seriously our job to provide each patient with the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health. We want to be your partners in that journey.”
“Cody, Terri, and I along with our dynamic team of dental assistants and dental hygienists want every patient we see to feel like a member of our family because that’s what they are to us,” Dr. John said. “There’s nothing more rewarding to us than building relationships with our patients and being able to watch them grow, from before they lose their baby teeth to the day they bring their own kids in to see us.”
One last review caught our eye and nicely summed up all that is Mansfield Family Dentistry. “If you’re looking for a comfortable, family environment for your next dental experience then Mansfield Family Dentistry is the place to go. Take the entire family and you’ll feel like you’re the most important person in the mind of the dentist you’re visiting. My experience was the best I have had in all my many visits to dentists. Gentle would be the description I would use. Also comfortable, caring, and loving.”

40 AREA CORPORATIONS PARTICIPATE IN THE NORTH TEXAS MEAL PACK FOR 9/11 DAY
Over the past 22 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks, the 9/11 anniversary has transformed into the largest day of service in America. Overall, more than 30 million Americans participate in 9/11 Day each year, dedicating time to helping others in need and rekindling the spirit of unity that brought Americans together in the days following the 9/11 tragedy. As a growing annual tradition, many Americans also share their “good deed” plans via social media on the morning of 9/11 under the annual #IWillFor911Day social media initiative.
“Our lives have been shaped by how we, as a country, came together to respond in the wake of 9/11,” said Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, which provides opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation’s most pressing challenges and improve lives and communities. “Through a spirit of unity and an enduring commitment to our most cherished values, the 9/11 Day of Service provides Americans an opportunity to refl ect, remember and take action, knowing we’re unstoppable when we stand together.”
About 9/11 Day
The 9/11 Day observance was founded in 2002, inspired by the spirit of unity, service, and shared humanity that arose in the United States and spread around the world following the events of September 11, 2001. Today, the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance - also known as 9/11 Day - stands as a permanent tribute to those lost and injured and those who rose in service in response to the tragedy. As the single largest day of service in the U.S., 9/11 Day reminds us that coming together in a spirit of kindness, no matter our differences has the power to change lives and, ultimately, our world.

[LEARNING DISABILITIES AND ADHD: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW]
BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
Approximately 10% of American school-age children suffer from a learning disability (LD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control. About 4% of children have both. But for many kids, these disorders go undetected despite their ongoing struggles with schoolwork and behavior issues that often accompany the conditions. Often, parents don’t suspect learning disabilities because many people associate it with low IQ. However, LDs affect children of all intelligence levels and have nothing to do with IQ. In fact, it isn’t uncommon for a child with a learning disability to excel in one or multiple subjects while struggling in another. Also, kids with LDs or ADHD may do well under certain conditions. Yet, in other situations, they have great difficulty. Depending on the LD and severity of it, a child might struggle in all areas.
30 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023
FORMS OF LEARNING DISABILITIES
There are multiple forms of LDs. Some pose input problems, which means a child struggles with either sound or visual input. The information isn’t processed correctly or gets stored incorrectly in the brain. This can pose problems with information retrieval and short or long-term memory.
An LD can also cause output problems. This can sometimes be seen in motor skills, such as handwriting difficulties. Another common problem is verbal output. This is usually evident in kids who have trouble organizing their thoughts either in writing or orally. Punctuation, grammar, and spelling may also suffer as a result.
Dyscalculia is a math learning disability. Kids with dyscalculia may have difficulty learning to tell time, counting money, or counting in general, learning math facts, calculating, understanding measurement, or performing mental math.
Dyslexia is a reading disability, although the symptoms are not exclusive to reading. Children with this disorder may struggle with spelling, vocabulary, or comprehension. They may read slowly, need help learning left from right, or have organizational problems with written and spoken language.
Dysgraphia is a writing disability. Poor handwriting and, often, an awkward style of holding a pencil or even contorting the body while writing are hallmarks. A child may also have trouble drawing lines. With dysgraphia, kids can often better express their understanding of the material through speech than in writing.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a problem with input. It isn’t a hearing
problem. Instead, the brain has difficulty processing sounds. As a result, kids with APD can be distracted by loud noise or struggle to follow conversations. This can be especially problematic when there’s a lot of background noise, making distinguishing sounds difficult.
Visual Processing Disorders (VPD) are also a problem with input. But VPD isn’t a vision problem. It’s a problem with the brain processing what the eyes see. It can result in a child bumping into things or being unable to distinguish the shapes they see. It can also pose difficulty in identifying letters or numbers or result in problems with visual sequencing, among other symptoms.
Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) is similar to Asperger Syndrome and shows up as difficulties with social skills. Academic problems are sometimes present as well. But often, these only show up once kids reach higher grade levels. Those with NLD may fear new situations, struggle to make friends, lack common sense, and experience social withdrawal. Academic problems can include reading comprehension and working out math story problems.
ADHD is marked by attention problems and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Symptoms can include difficulty staying on task or paying attention. Yet, they often hyperfocus on stimulating activity. Children with ADHD may fidget or have trouble staying seated, interrupt, and act without thinking.
The symptoms listed above for each of the LDs aren’t exhaustive. You can learn more about symptoms by visiting the website of the Learning Disabilities Association of America at ldaamerica. org/types-of-learning-disabilities/.
What to do if you suspect your child whas an LD or ADHD
The first step is to talk with your child’s teacher and find out what they have observed. Then, speak to the school principal. Public schools are required by law to provide an assessment. This should include an IQ test, assessments of math, reading, and writing, and testing of processing skills. If your child is in a private school that doesn’t offer this service, you can request it through your public school district. Once your child has been diagnosed, your school psychologist should be able to recommend and help you set up services or accommodations. Depending on the specific learning disability, your child may qualify for special education services under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or accommodations through Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Keep in mind you are your child’s best advocate. Research your child’s LD and learn how you and your school can help. Talk to your child’s teacher about additional ways they can assist your child and if you feel your child isn’t getting the help needed, talk to a school administrator.

M arv e lous Maple
TAP INTO THE PUREST FORM OF THIS FALL FAVORITE
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
We had nothing but real maple syrup in the house when I was a kid. Mom scoffed at the idea when my sister and I begged her for the artificial syrups we saw in TV ads. I didn’t realize it then, but eventually, I understood how lucky we were. There’s nothing like pure maple syrup’s sweet, distinctive flavor with hints of caramel and toffee. It’s almost indescribable. Recently, I saw a man pull a small bottle of maple syrup from his pocket and pour it over pancakes at a restaurant, and I thought, “One of my kind!” So, I’m hoping that after reading this article, a few more people will become converts and join team maple!
In the Beginning
Native Americans in Canada and the Northeastern United States discovered maple sugar. One popular legend explains that an Iroquois Chief threw his tomahawk at a sugar maple tree in winter and noticed sweet sap warmed by the sun running from the tree the next day. Another legend credits red squirrels for the discovery. As the story goes, a Native American observed a squirrel climbing a
maple tree, biting a branch, and then drinking the sap. Imitating the squirrel, he made a slash in the tree and tasted the sweet sap for himself. Either way, the practice of collecting maple sugar tree sap and making syrup was adopted by early European settlers. They set up sugar camps where maple trees were plentiful and boiled the sap in iron caldrons to remove water and concentrate the sugar. The rest is history.
34 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023
From Sap to Syrup to Sugar
Certain species of maples are tapped on the south side of the tree, and a bucket or container is hung from the tap into which the sap drips. A single maple tree can produce five to 15 gallons of sap per season, and it takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of syrup. Once collected, it is boiled down to about 66% sugar, then strained and poured into a bottle. That’s it! No additives, no intensive processing, just pure, wholesome, and utterly delectable maple syrup.
If you want to make maple sugar, cook down maple syrup to reduce water content further, then stir vigorously to form a granulated sugar. To make maple cream, boil some good quality maple syrup to 234°, then slowly stir continuously for around 30 minutes until a thick cream forms. If you’re using a stand mixer to make maple cream, use the paddle attachment and set the mixer to the lowest setting.
Making the Grade
Since 2015, North American maple producers have graded their syrup based on the Standards for Grades of Maple Syrup, defined by the United States Department of Agriculture. There are four grades — Grade A Golden, Grade A Amber, Grade A Dark, and Grade A Very Dark. Each has a different color and
taste profile. The darker the syrup, the stronger the maple flavor. The lighter the color, the more delicate the flavor.
A Matter of Preference
Every maple-producing state and each maple sugar farm likes to claim their maple syrup is the best, and people have a proclivity based on their taste. I certainly do. As a pure maple syrup lover since I was knee-high, I splurge on a few bottles of Fuller’s Sugarhouse Reserve maple syrup every year (FullersSugarHouse.com). Based on decades of experience and taste memory, they select one day a year for their Reserve label syrup, which they consider the best-tasting batch. Their standards and integrity are so high that if, primarily due to weather, they can’t clearly distinguish a “best-tasting” batch, they’ll forgo the Reserve label for that year.
Have Fun with a Taste Test
Has your curiosity about 100% pure maple syrup been piqued? Have some family fun with a blindfolded taste test comparing it to “the imitation stuff.” And if you’re hosting a holiday gathering, keep your guests entertained by trying a flight of maple syrup from Golden to Very Dark, and then select the one they prefer to add to a dish or dessert you are serving.
Fuller’s Sugarhouse Maple Bacon
Ingredients:
1 lb. uncooked sliced bacon
2 Tbsp. pure maple syrup
1 Tbsp. dry mustard
½ Tbsp. Himalayan salt
¼ Tbsp. cayenne pepper
½ Tbsp. cumin
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350ºF. Wrap a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and top with a wire rack. In a large bowl, add pure maple syrup, pure maple sugar, mustard, salt, cayenne pepper, and cumin. Mix well. Coat the bacon by dredging it in the maple mixture, then place it in a single layer onto the wire rack. Bake in the center of the oven for approx. 25 – 30 minutes. Check frequently. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the rack. Break into bite-sized pieces. Serve at room temperature.
Warning:
Chances are you’ll love this so much you’ll regret not making at least two batches!

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR A FRIGHTENINGLY FUN NIGHT
Boo! Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s time to prepare for a night of tricks, treats, and spooky adventures. While Halloween is all about embracing the spirit of the season, it’s essential to keep safety in mind to ensure that your night remains delightfully fun and free from any real scares. So, grab your broomsticks and jack-o’-lanterns as we share some tips to keep you safe during this bewitching night!
COSTUME CREATIVITY & SAFETY
Dre ssing up is one of the highlights of Halloween, and the possibilities are endless! Whether you or your kiddo is going as a precious pumpkin or a ghastly ghoul, ensure that costumes don’t impede mobility or obscure vision. Opt for non-toxic face paint instead of masks to provide a clear view of the surroundings. And don’t forget to add reflective elements to your costume or carry a flashlight so you’re easily visible to passing cars and fellow trick-or-treaters.
WANDER ON WELL-LIT PATHWAYS
As you venture into the night in search of treats and treasures, stay on welllit paths and sidewalks and bring
along friends and family members. Remember, there’s safety in numbers, and besides, who wouldn’t want to share the fun of Halloween with their favorite trick-or-treaters?
CANDY INSPECTION 101
Before you dive into your stash of goodies, it’s essential to do a candy inspection. Check for any signs of tampering, and if something looks suspicious, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Parents should lend a helping hand with the inspection and keep an eye out for choking hazards for younger trick-or-treaters. And don’t forget to balance out all those sweets with a healthy meal before the night’s adventures!
PET-ACULAR PRECAUTIONS
If you’re planning to take your four-legged fur monsters along for the festivities, make sure they are comfortable in their costumes (if they’re willing participants!). Keep them on a leash and ensure they have proper identification, just in case they get spooked and try to pull a disappearing act. Keep pets away from lit pumpkins and candles to avoid any accidental tail-torching incidents.
FRIGHTFULLY SAFE DRIVING
If you’re driving on Halloween night, take extra precautions. Drive slowly and watch out for excited little trick-ortreaters who may be crossing the street in their pursuit of sugary delights.
SAFELY HAUNT YOUR HOME
If you’re decorating your home to give visitors a good scare, ensure that your haunted display is safe for all. Secure any loose props or decorations that could cause trips or falls. Use batteryoperated candles instead of real flames to light up your jack-o’-lanterns and keep fire hazards at bay. And don’t forget to keep your furry friends safe from your spooky setup, too! With these safety tips in mind, you’re all set for a Halloween night that’s full of magic, thrills, and good oldfashioned fun. Remember, staying safe doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the spine-chilling spirit of Halloween. So, go out and enjoy the tricks and treats while making memories that will haunt you (in a good way) for years to come. Happy Halloween, everyone!
HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE

NORTH TEXAS NEUROSURGICAL CONSULTANTS
JACOB ROSENSTEIN, M.D., F.A.A.N.S., F.A.C.S.
Life's circumstances often shape our destinies in unexpected ways. We are all products of a complex tapestry woven from the threads of our upbringing, experiences, and choices. It is fascinating how seemingly insignificant seeds planted in our formative years can grow into thriving forests of possibilities. What may have appeared insignificant at the time can flourish into something remarkable, allowing us to exceed our expectations and redefine our destinies.
Dr. Jacob Rosenstein's story is a testament to this truth. Born into a family where his father was a tailor, Dr. Rosenstein inherited a remarkable set of skills and dexterity from an early age. Witnessing his father build incredible objects and transform reality with his hands, young Jacob learned the value of hard work, handeye coordination, and ideas about how to virtually manipulate 3D space in his head.
Born in Ukraine, Dr. Jacob Rosenstein immigrated to the Bronx, NY at the age of nine. He attended the prestigious Bronx High School of Science, which boasts the distinction of having eight Nobel laureates among its alumni. Driven by his passion for science and medicine, Jacob pursued his undergraduate and medical studies at Johns Hopkins University. His residency at UT Southwestern in Dallas at Parkland Hospital exposed him to the intense demands of trauma care, as he treated patients in the very same room where President Kennedy was attended to in his final moments.
Seeking to expand his expertise, Dr. Rosenstein embarked on a neurosurgical fellowship at Queen's Square in London under the guidance of Professor Lindsay Simon. With enriched knowledge and experience, he returned to Texas and has been practicing in Arlington since 1985, leaving an indelible mark on the fi eld of neurosurgery. Dr. Rosenstein would go on to found his practice North Texas Neurosurgical Consultants (NTNC).
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Jacob Rosenstein has gained expertise in a wide range of neurosurgical procedures, spanning from pediatrics to geriatrics. From vascular neurosurgery to spine neurosurgery, his skill set is all-encompassing. After doing emergency room calls for over 30 years, Dr. Rosenstein now primarily focuses on spine related diseases. These surgeries require a delicate touch and meticulous attention to detail. Driven by his passion for complex

cases that other surgeons shy away from due to the time and precision involved, Dr. Jacob Rosenstein prides himself on taking on these challenges.
Before every surgery, Dr. Rosenstein and his team conduct a comprehensive consultation and testing phase to produce a detailed analysis of the patient's disease process and its impact on the patient. By thoroughly understanding the nuances of each patient's condition, they can tailor their approach to ensure the best possible outcome. To this point, Dr. Rosenstein is known for his fl uency in interpreting MRI and CT scans, with the ability to see in 3D in his mind. With decades of experience, Dr. Rosenstein is able to see potential trouble spots that can lead to complications and plan a strategy to avoid them ahead of time. Like a top athlete preparing for a competition, he mentally rehearses each surgical procedure four or five times before stepping into the operating room. This level of preparation allows him to perform with unparalleled precision and ensures the highest standard of care for his patients.
At NTNC, Dr. Rosenstein and his team specialize in spine related diseases, whether they require surgery or not, providing comprehensive care for various conditions. This involves the utmost care and gentleness when handling delicate tissues near the spinal cord, nerves, and brain. Whether treating compressed spinal cords, compressed nerves, or spinal stenosis, his expertise and commitment to exceptional outcomes are evident by his stellar reputation among patients.
NTNC offers a wide range of treatments for different conditions ranging from minimally invasive spine surgeries to complex spine cases requiring fusion. Patients seek out Dr. Rosenstein for his reputation as a trusted and knowledgeable
practitioner. His expertise goes beyond neurosurgery, as he has cultivated a vast network of professionals who can provide additional assistance when needed.
With over four decades of experience, Dr. Rosenstein continues to improve with every surgery he performs. His accumulated knowledge, refined techniques, and past experiences allow him to deliver increasingly effective and holistic treatment plans. He continues to harness his mastery and position as the leading expert in treating spinal stenosis in DFW. After over 10,000 successful surgeries, he has developed special expertise in treating even the most complicated cases of spinal stenosis. He is well known for his track record of successful outcomes, with fast recovery and getting it right the fi rst time.
Spinal stenosis is a condition where your spinal canal begins to close off and compress the spinal cord and nerves that reside inside of it. It can occur anywhere in the spine including your neck, mid-back, and low-back. Many things can cause Spinal Stenosis. Some people are even born with it and this gradually progresses as they age. But, for most people, it is a result of the aging process of the spine. As we age, the spine begins to deteriorate, including the discs, the facet joints, and the ligaments that connect them. Over time, the space available for the spinal cord
and nerve roots diminishes causing pain, neurologic loss, and disability.
Dr. Jacob Rosenstein, after careful and extensive study of anatomy and diagnostic scans over many years, has perfected his treatment for spinal stenosis using various surgical techniques. At NTNC, Dr. Rosenstein will determine the best treatment for you based on your specific set of circumstances and confidently help you return to a normal life.
As the field of medicine constantly evolves, Dr. Jacob Rosenstein remains committed to staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and advancements. However, he exercises caution and ensures that any new technology he adopts is genuinely benefi cial to his patients and not simply a passing trend. His focus is always on providing the best care possible since “the little things matter." You can trust your health and future with Dr. Rosenstein.

TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY
James Kelley, DO
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
No two days are ever quite the same for Dr. James Kelley. As a urologist, he treats men and women for a variety of urologic conditions including urologic cancers, kidney stones, urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate, overactive bladder, men’s health, vasectomy, and much more. For him, the practice of medicine is highly personal. He himself endured a condition as a teen that landed him in a wheelchair for two years, eventually undergoing a complete hip replacement when he was only 21.
Through that experience, he learned the difference a compassionate and caring doctor can make and he strives to be that provider every day. “I hope that any patient I treat knows they’ve been heard, never feels rushed, and leaves here better educated about their condition,” he said. “Patients tell me I’m easy to talk to, and they feel things were explained well and discussed in ways they can understand. That all began with me being a patient first—a doctor second.”
Dr. Kelley feels strongly about serving as his patients’ advocate and taking the time to guide them toward the best options for their treatment. “Each patient I see is uniquely different,” he said. “I like to spend as much time as it takes getting to know them and making sure they feel comfortable with treatment plans going forward. I always want them to feel they have a voice in making decisions about their own care. I never want anyone to leave an appointment with me with unanswered questions.”
To Dr. Kelley, the relationships he forges with his patient are the best part of the job. “Urology is a rapidly advancing fi eld where I can follow my patients for years,” he said. “I’m able to treat problems that
greatly improve my patients' quality of life. They truly become like family to me. They can rest assured any treatment options I discuss I’d also recommend to my own family and friends.”
Dr. Kelley is trained in the DaVinci robotic surgery system, which allows him to provide a minimally invasive surgical approach for multiple urologic diseases. But although he is a skilled and experienced surgeon, he believes in exhausting all non-surgical options before recommending surgery.
In his free time, Dr. Kelley is a member of the Mansfi eld Chamber of Commerce where he participates in patient education events to help spread awareness regarding men's health issues. There’s no doubt where his inspiration comes from. “I’m most passionate about my family,” he said. “My beautiful wife, two daughters, and extended family are the most important things in the world to me. They’re the reason for everything I do.”
AT TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY, DR. KELLEY TREATS AND MANAGES A WIDE VARIETY OF UROLOGIC ISSUES INCLUDING:
• Male and Female Bladder Complaints
• Kidney Stones
• Urologic Cancers
• Hormone Deficiencies
• Vasectomy
• Men’s Health
• Urinary Incontinence
• Prostate Problems

Vickrey’s integrative approach offers options that are expertly tailored to every client’s wants and needs. The results can be seen in Vickrey herself, “I actually have MS and have suffered from migraines for a long time. Unfortunately, conventional
medicine doesn’t have a lot to offer for conditions like that. That model of care often is unable to identify why they even occur and there are not great treatment options available. I know that I’ve seen the biggest benefits for my own health concerns through more functional approaches. I’m excited to bring more of that to our area.”
Vickrey’s practice is also known for her bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) and medical weight loss solutions. Using her health approaches, Vickrey found relief from her chronic condition AND lost 135 lbs. For those who find weight loss and energy to be a constant struggle, Vickrey works with each client to find what works best for them to achieve their goals and maintain them. “We have several different approaches that we tailor to each client of course, but the biggest piece for me is supporting the mental aspect. We want the loss to be achieved in a healthy way and to be sustainable.” Vickrey’s BHRT keeps clients’ hormones in check, leading to more energy, fewer menopause symptoms, improvements in sexual health, better sleep, and stronger nails and hair. “Our practice gives clients the opportunity to turn back the clock and rejuvenate the whole person. We’re thankful to be voted Best Of in 2023 and it’s our mission to continue that success and admiration for years to come!”

Dr. Toker has made this program available on her website DrAnnaToker.com (under the tab “free wellness program”) where she offers a dynamic series of educational videos on topics relevant to the gut microbiome and its importance and outlining steps you can take to improve your health and mental clarity. “I also explain microbiome testing and include a link to a reputable testing site,” Dr. Toker said. “The code gutcheck15 will allow you to access 15% off of any supplements you purchase from the testing center for the next six months”. IMPROVING BELLY BLOAT AND MENTAL FOG
Not sure what your microbiome is or how diversity in your GI tract microbial organisms can flatten your belly and boost your focus? “A diverse microbiome provides you with vitamins and micronutrients required for energy, promotes your immune function, protects you from infection, reduces infl ammation, mitigates causes of auto-immune diseases, produces neurotransmitters which affect your
mood and behavior, improves digestion, and dampens hunger sensations,” Dr. Toker said. “Once you realize there are trillions of micro-organisms in your body working tirelessly to help you live well, it’s time to learn how to help them help you.”
DR.
TOKER’S FREE EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS WILL TEACH YOU ABOUT:
• The main toxic food sources that reduce bacterial diversity
• How to increase microbiome diversity
• Benefits of a healthy microbiome
• How to use the power of whole food and the microbiome to improve your mental clarity and GI function

SOUTH ARLINGTON SMILES
Talon Davis, DDS
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
As a young man, Talon Davis had his eye on a career in psychiatry (which may or may not have been influenced by hours bingeing episodes of Frasier). In the end, he found purpose and fulfillment in the field of family dentistry. Happily for him— and for his patients— keen interest in human behavior comes into play every day in his practice, South Arlington Smiles. “As it turns out, dentists serve as therapists a significant portion of the time,” he said. “We live with our patients through their struggles and victories, all the while supporting them in any way we can. We see patients of all ages and the relationships we forge are the best part of our jobs.”
In service to those patients, Dr. Davis strives to make his practice a one-stopshop for all their dental needs. “While we do our share of fillings and crowns, what we truly enjoy is more specialized procedures,” Dr. Davis said. Toward that end, he’s completed hundreds of hours of continuing-education classes to increase his skillset and has invested in the latest, cutting-edge dental technology. “We rarely have to refer procedures and if patients do need to see a specialist, we often have them come into the office to get the work done here,” Dr. Davis said. “We’re also able to make dentistry supremely comfortable while keeping costs low. We recently bought the equipment to provide same day crowns for our patients and that’s been a massive success.”
For Dr. Davis, dentistry is all about service to others. “My grandmother instilled a strong work ethic in me and made it clear that what we do, we do in service to the people in our lives,” he said. “She taught me that being true in what you do allows you to accept the outcomes life delivers. Dentistry has allowed me to serve my patients well while still being available to my family.”
MEET DR. DAVIS
Originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, Talon Davis grew up playing the double bass in symphony orchestras, staying active in his church choir, and working in his family music studio. He completed two degrees in music performance and performed with major symphonies in the DFW area for years, before hearing a call to serve through dentistry. When not on the job, he still loves playing his double bass. He and his wife, Kristin, an orchestra director for Arlington ISD, have a beautiful three-year-old daughter that’s the light of their lives.
Dr. Davis regularly volunteers at Mission Arlington providing dental services to the underserved and has set a goal this year for South Arlington Smiles to provide $50,000 in dental care to underserved communities throughout Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Mansfi eld. He’s a big supporter of local school and health fairs where he offers dental health education. And when time allows, he enjoys getting in as much golf and Sooner football as he can.
“We rarely have to refer procedures and if patients do need to see a specialist, we often have them come into the office to get the work done here. We’re also able to make dentistry supremely comfortable while keeping costs low. We recently bought the equipment to provide same day crowns for our patients and that’s been a massive success.”

DIGESTIVE HEALTH CENTER AT REDBIRD SQUARE
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Digestive Health Centers (DHC) is the collective name for six state-of-the-art, fully licensed endoscopy centers across Dallas, North Dallas, and the DFW Metroplex. Their gastroenterologists provide high-quality, patient-centric care with a full array of GI procedures and gastrointestinal diagnostic services, including colonoscopy and endoscopy. DHC has been an integral part of our community for 25 years and with six locations, there’s one convenient to your home or work.
The team at Digestive Health Center at Redbird Square understands that 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could have been prevented with proper screening. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women. In fact, one in 23 men and one in 25 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Yet it’s a highly preventable cancer.
Recently, the recommended age for routine colorectal screening was lowered from 50 to 45 if you have no family history or other risk factors — sooner if you do. Digestive Health Center at Redbird Square makes your outpatient colorectal exam easy, convenient, and affordable. This stateof-the-art endoscopy center features the latest technology and experienced, board certifi ed gastroenterologists. The center enjoys a patient-satisfaction rate in the high 90s, and because they’re an ambulatory surgery center, they can offer your screening at a third of the cost of a hospital.
They offer direct access screening colonoscopies, which means if you’re of screening age, have no family history of colon cancer, and aren’t currently experiencing any GI symptoms, you can schedule your colonoscopy procedure without an office visit.
The doctors and staff at Digestive Health Center at Redbird Square want you to know colorectal cancer is beatable in up to 90% of cases when detected early with appropriate screening performed by a trained gastroenterologist. Unfortunately, one in three adult Americans are not up to date on their colon cancer screening. Don’t be a statistic. Visit DHCofTX. com or call the central scheduling line at (972) 853-8610 to schedule your next screening.
BE PROACTIVE
Lower your risk of colorectal cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy diet, and abstaining from smoking. Exercise and keep alcohol consumption at a moderate level. Learn the warning signs of colorectal cancer which include anemia, rectal bleeding, dark or black stool, a change in bowel habits, diarrhea and/or constipation, narrowing of stool, persistent abdominal discomfort (cramps, gas, pain, or feeling bloated), unexplained weight loss, weakness or fatigue, and nausea or vomiting. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, consult your doctor who may recommend a colonoscopy.
DID YOU KNOW?
A colonoscopy is the only screening option that can both detect and prevent colon cancer by detecting and removing precancerous polyps. A screening colonoscopy is usually only needed once every 10 years for people at average risk. At home stool-based tests are also available, however they may miss some colon cancers and most precancerous polyps. When at home tests are positive, a colonoscopy is recommended.

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE
Mandy Cotten, DNP, APRN, FNP-C
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
It’s probably no surprise that as we age, our hormone production wanes. If you’re a woman, that means your estrogen and progesterone levels begin declining as you approach menopause. These inevitable hormonal changes can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as night sweats and mood swings. But Nurse Practitioner Mandy Cotten has encouraging news. “Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can help. BHRT uses hormones from natural sources with the ability to closely match the chemical makeup of your own hormones. This helps decrease side effects and allows for a effective symptom relief.”
Mandy loves providing this good option to her male and female patients and then walking with them toward a better, more vibrant life and empowering them to take their health into their own hands. Living Magazine readers consistently thank her by voting her “Best Hormone Replacement” in her area.
“While synthetic oral hormones must be metabolized through the liver first and converted to a different hormone— structure sometimes causing the opposite effect than what’s desired— BHRT enters your body, goes directly to the receptor site, and achieves the desired results” Mandy said. “Hormone treatments can be tailored to your specific needs and administered through your choice of creams, patches, pills, or pellets.”
BHRT can balance your mood, improve sleep, reduce brain fog, decrease hot flashes, alleviates vaginal dryness, increase stamina and energy, increase muscle mass, decrease fat mass, and increase libido, as well as provide heart protection, bone protection, brain protection, and enhance sexual desire with patients typically noticing an improvement in seven-to-10 days after starting treatment.” Mandy begins with initial extensive lab testing, then
tests again four to six weeks making adjustments when indicated.
Mandy also consults with patients about proper thyroid health, imperative to overall health. “The thyroid is involved in multiple aspects of health including metabolism, temperature regulation, mood, and cardiac function, so it’s imperative to find a provider who will evaluate the whole picture,” Mandy said. “I assess the Free T3 and Free T4 and evaluate for antibodies against the thyroid looking for autoimmune dysfunction causing any thyroid problems. Patients with low thyroid symptoms can have labs that appear normal, requiring additional testing such as looking at a reverse T3.”
Mandy Cotten has performed over 30,000 pellet procedures, averaging 300 a month. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and her Bachelor of Science of Nursing (BSN) both from Texas Christian University and worked
in labor and delivery at John Peter Smith hospital for fi ve years before completing her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Loyola University in New Orleans in 2015 and becoming certifi ed by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
“I’m blessed to do what I love every day, partnering with my patients, educating them, and providing them with the best care possible,” she said. When not on the job, Mandy enjoys spending time with her husband, Casey, and their children.

MANAGING menopause
INCREASED HEALTH RISKS AND TRENDS IN TREATMENTS
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Did you know that October is World Menopause Month? It was created to bring more awareness about health conditions and chronic diseases that may occur due to menopause.
In fact, the theme for World Menopause Day 2023 is cardiovascular disease. In addition to heart disease and stroke, menopause can increase your risk of diabetes, dementia, cancer, osteoporosis, and fractures, to name a few. And with a decline in certain hormones, body aches and pains usually increase. In addition to changes in menstruation and, ultimately, the cessation of menstruation, menopause symptoms include hot and cold fl ashes, low libido, weight gain, brain fog, low energy, night sweats, sleep disturbances, dry skin, mood changes, and vaginal dryness.
FIGHTING MENOPAUSE WITH HORMONES
All of this sounds bleak, but thanks to modern medicine, you can take steps to minimize symptoms and stave off health issues and chronic diseases that may arise.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Progress continues to be made with two general kinds of HRT designed to replace lost or low hormones and help restore hormonal balance. Conventional HRT uses “synthetic” hormones. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses processed hormones derived from plants. Each method can be effective but discuss options with your physician to help determine which may be the optimal treatment for you.
62 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023 wellness
Conventional HRT involves prescription medications in the form of pills, creams, and patches. They include Cenestin (conjugated estrogens), Estinyl (estrogen and progestin combination), Estrace (estradiol), Menest (esterified estrogens), Premarin (conjugated estrogens), and Femtrace (estradiol). Vagifem, which targets menopausal changes in and around the vagina, is administered via estradiol vaginal inserts. Ask your doctor to compare options and explain which ones may be right for you.
Bioidentical HRT: Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are the most commonly used bioidentical hormones. Although BHRT products are available over the counter, always work with a healthcare provider who will oversee treatment versus making DIY changes to your endocrine system balance. BHRT providers typically perform bloodwork to determine which hormones are depleted and then create a treatment plan with customized bioidentical hormone doses. BHRT is administered via pills, patches, creams, gels, injections, and implanted long-release pellets.
NEWER PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS
Science is moving forward on treatments, including new
prescription medications. We’ve outlined two of them below.
Veozah (fezolinetant) is a hormonefree oral medication for treating moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS) — hot flashes and night sweats due to menopause. FDA-cleared in 2023, it works by blocking NKB (Neurokinin B), a neuropeptide that triggers VMS. Visit Veozah.com for more information.
Bijuva is touted as the “first and only FDA-approved combination of bioidentical estradiol and progesterone in a single daily oral capsule.” In clinical studies, women taking Bijuva experienced significant relief in one month. Visit Bijuva.com for more information.
EMBR WAVE WEARABLE TECH
This device, which looks like a sleek round wristwatch with a cover, is a patented technology that delivers hot and cold flash relief on demand at the touch of a button. According to Embre Wave, its “precisely engineered patterns of temperature sensations bring fast, full-body menopause symptom relief by cooling or warming the sensitive skin of your inner wrist,” which triggers a natural mind-body response. Visit EmbrLabs.com for more information.
Menopause and Supplements
A natural inclination these days is to look for dietary supplements for much-needed relief. A few of the most popular menopause supplements are listed below.
Soy – Research suggests that eating soy products or taking soy supplements might relieve menopausal symptoms because it contains a high concentration of isoflavones, a type of plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) that is similar in function to, but weaker, than human estrogen.
Black Cohosh – A member of the buttercup family, this herb contains phytochemicals that can improve menopause symptoms, particularly hot flashes.
Red Clove r – Contains chemicals called phy toestrogens that are similar to the hormone estrogen, which may increase estradiol levels in menopausal women and improve quality of life.
Moringa Leaf – Moringa leaves, which are high in certain vitamins and bioflavonoids, have been shown to modulate several menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, mood swings, loss of libido, and night sweats.
Please keep in mind that while natural, plant-based supplements sound great, some supplements may be harmful if not taken as directed or if you have an underlying condition. Always talk with your medical doctor before you start taking any new supplements.

LASER focused
HOW TECHNOLOGY HAS TRANSFORMED PROCEDURES
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Lasers have transformed how we approach cosmetic services. Here are a few of the popular options available. What’s most important is to choose an experienced provider who will develop a personalized treatment plan using the laser or lasers that can best address your cosmetic concerns.
LASER SKIN RESURFACING AND TIGHTENING
Today’s lasers help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, large pores, and more. As your skin heals, the boost in collagen and elastin production creates smoother, tighter, fi rmer, and more radiant skin.
Lasers typically used for skin resurfacing include ablative CO2 (carbon dioxide) and Erbium lasers. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ablative laser skin resurfacing removes the skin’s epidermal and superfi cial dermal layers. While ablative laser treatments yield great results, often dramatic, they typically require the longest downtime, from a few days up to one to two weeks for more aggressive treatments.
64 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023 aesthetics
Lasers emit a single wavelength (color) of highenergy light to a small area to achieve results. Some physicians and medical aesthetic providers have more than one laser technology in their arsenal to customize treatments, while others use hybrid platforms that support more than one wavelength.
Fractional laser systems, including CO2 and Erbium, split the laser beam into numerous microbeams. Because only a fraction of the skin is treated at one time — leaving surrounding skin undamaged — healing usually occurs more rapidly and with less downtime than ablative laser treatments. Fractional lasers may also be used to treat skin with more melanin-forming cells.
SUN DAMAGE, ROSACEA, PIGMENTATION, SPIDER VEINS
By targeting skin pigments, non-ablative Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) lasers are often used to treat age spots, freckles, and sun damage. They also rejuvenate the skin and target spider veins, rosacea, and facial redness by heating the targeted vessels, which are absorbed by your body through natural healing. Pulsed dye lasers (PDL) are another type of laser that targets tiny blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface to remove birthmarks and treat rosacea and facial redness.
ACNE TREATMENT
Certain laser wavelengths are geared to treat mild to severe acne by selectively targeting the source of the skin’s oil (sebaceous) glands. Lasers also reduce acnecausing bacteria and address redness and inflammation common with acne breakouts
without the use of pharmaceutical drugs, whether systemic or topical.
HAIR REMOVAL/REDUCTION
Various lasers are designed to damage hair follicles and reduce hair regrowth in the treated areas. Although laser hair removal has been considered most effective for people with light skin, thanks to technological advances, it’s now an option for people with more pigmentation.
During treatment, a concentrated beam of light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. It damages those hair follicles, thus delaying future hair growth. Since hair grows in cycles, multiple treatments are needed for initial removal. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the location — legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, back, arms, bikini line, and more. Maintenance treatments are usually needed to help keep hair regrowth at bay.
TATTOO REMOVAL
The type of laser used to remove a tattoo depends on the tattoo’s colors, but new-generation systems such as the PiQo4 laser treat the widest variety of ink colors. With multiple wavelengths and short laser pulses, PiQo4 light energy is absorbed into the target areas of the skin, causing it to convert into acoustic waves that shatter the ink/pigment granules.
Is IPL a Laser Treatment?
Technically, the answer is no. It’s a common misconception because people often associate non-invasive light-based energy devices with a laser. IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy uses a broader spectrum of light versus lasers, which concentrate a single wavelength of light. In other words, IPL uses light pulses of different wavelengths to treat various skin problems, including lines and wrinkles, sun damage and hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and more.
BBL (BroadBand Light) uses multiple wavelengths of intense pulsed light (IPL) to reduce signs of aging, minimize discoloration, and rejuvenate the skin by boosting collagen and elastin production. Generally, BBL is considered a modern version of traditional IPL treatments, using poly-chromatic (broad spectrum) light to work its magic with minimal downtime and discomfort.

TWO WAYS ANXIETY AFFECTS PARENTS
BY SISSY GOFF
In my thirty-plus years of counseling, I’ve never seen parents feel as much pressure or as much like failures as they do today. I’ve never had as many parents in tears in my office. And I’ve certainly never seen as many parents who live in a perpetual state of worry. How would you say worry affects you, as a parent? I certainly believe, after sitting with parents day in and day out in my office, that not only do you worry more because you are a parent, but those worries affect you differently as well. I list five ways anxiety affects parents in my new book, The Worry-Free Parent , but here I want to highlight two major ways anxiety impacts the parent.
1. Anxiety distracts us.
One of the things I hear parents say most often is how distracting anxiety
is. In fact, I’ve learned through my work with kids and parents that anxiety and ADHD, particularly the inattentive kind, are almost identical symptomatically. Both cause restlessness, a lack of focus, difficulty regulating emotions, and even sleep impairment. Do any of those sound familiar? Even more specifically, have you ever found yourself
• not listening to your child because you’re worried about what’s happening next on your schedule?
• unable to remember the conversation you had with your daughter before the birthday party because you were concerned about how she would do once she got to the party?
• unable to laugh and play with your kids, simply because of all that’s pressing in on you?
There are a million ways worry distracts us on a daily basis. But maybe one of the saddest is that it robs us of time connecting with the kids we love — really connecting in hear-their-words and look-them-in-the-eyes ways. That connection is foundational not only to building but to maintaining your relationship over the long haul. And the long haul really isn’t long enough. We want to be present for these long days and short years. We want to be able to let go of our worries in a way that keeps us in the moment, instead of imagining the future years based more on our anxious distortions than on reality.
2. Anxiety makes us attach future meaning to present problems.
In my counseling practice with kids and teens, I hear the same refrain from parents every day:
72 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023
“I don’t think I’m preparing my child well for the future.”
“I haven’t had him in travel sports, and now he’ll never be able to keep up at a high school level.”
“I haven’t had her in enough Kumon classes or tutoring, and now she won’t be able to get into the right school that will help her get into the right college.”
“She didn’t start cheerleading at four, and now we’ve lost our chance for her to ever make a competitive team.”
Do you hear the familiar thread? The parent fears something not done today will negatively impact their child’s tomorrow.
The worries can be over what we believe we haven’t offered them. The sports or academics or lessons or learning opportunities we believe we’ve missed that will hinder our child’s future in some life-altering way. Or the characteristics we haven’t taught. The things we feel “all the other parents” have been doing that we haven’t been able to get done. We haven’t started chores. We haven’t been saying our grateful lists at the dinner table.
We’re not keeping up, which means our children won’t be able to keep up — or measure up — in all the ways that will lead to their success, our anxiety tells us. But it’s simply not true.
The worries can also be over skills or traits our kids currently lack.
“Because he can’t sit still in kindergarten means he’ll never make it in grade school, and there’s no way he’ll be able to hold a job when he’s older.”
“How will she ever be able to function as an adult when she doesn’t keep her room clean now?”
“If he’s not responsible enough to remember to take out the trash at thirteen, why would I ever believe he’d be responsible enough to drive a car?”
“She thinks about herself all the time as a middle schooler. I’m not sure how she’ll ever be able to have a healthy, caring relationship with another person.”
The list goes on and on. In our worry, we become fortune tellers for our kids. We decide what’s happening now will be happening five, ten, even twenty years from now. Or what’s not happening now — either what we missed or the characteristics we believe they’re missing — will
handicap them for the rest of their lives. Kids are developing people. Their job is to learn under our roof while they’re still home with us and we can help them learn. Our job is to eventually raise healthy, well-functioning adults. Eventually is the key word. They are not those adults yet.
In terms of brain development, the last portions of our brains to develop are the frontal lobes, which house the executive functioning part of our brains. The frontal lobes help develop our working memories, dictate impulse control, help us think logically, manage our emotions, and plan for the future. In the last twenty years, neuroimaging research has taught us those frontal lobes may not be fully developed until approximately age twenty-five. Your eight-year-old isn’t capable of managing her emotions in the same way she will be at eighteen. Your twelveyear-old doesn’t yet have the skills to carry the same responsibilities he will be able to at twenty. Your fourteenyear-old is somewhat narcissistic. It’s a normal and even an important stopover on the journey of development and individuation for all kids. The narcissism will fade. He will get there. And so will she.
Unfortunately, when it comes to the kids we love, our worries take over and cause our shortsightedness to become long reaching. We decide, based on their own developmental immaturity, that something is wrong. They already should be able to (fill in the blank). Rather than seeing the gap as a normal part of their development, we believe it’s a character flaw. And worse still, one that will mark their lives, both personally and professionally, forever. What is one way you’ve been fortunetelling about your child’s life? What’s a future, problematic meaning you’ve attached to an area in which they’re still growing?
Your child is growing into who God has created him or her to be. It is a journey and one that takes many unexpected and messy twists and turns along the way. Think back on your own becoming. What were some of your missteps, and how have they impacted your adulthood? What were some of the clumsier, less mature moments, and how have those contributed to who you are? My guess is that all of them have folded into the strengths, the character, and the wisdom that now mark not only
your life but your parenthood. The same will be true for your kids. Trust the process. Trust your child. And trust that there is Someone in charge who is a much better predictor of the future than you or I.

FINDING A MEMORY CARE OR ASSISTED LIVING CENTER
BY PETE ALFANO
Medical advances have made it possible to live a longer, healthier, and more productive life. But the graying of America also presents challenges in fi nding the best way to care for the elderly when it becomes di cult for them to live independently because of physical limitations or cognitive disorders.
In the past, the obvious choice was a nursing home where the elderly lived in a setting much like a dormitory. They have a private or semi-private room but little to no privacy. Meals are eaten communally, and a trained nursing sta administers care. But senior citizens in an assisted living facility have an independent lifestyle with their own apartment, and sometimes, even a townhouse or villa, with all the comforts of home, kitchen included.
74 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | october 2023
Assisted living provides help when needed. The facilities o er amenities such as transportation to a doctor’s o ce and shopping and dining rooms serving meals prepared by a chef if residents don’t want to cook for themselves. And there are other perks, such as periodic housekeeping, group activities, and fi tness centers. If a resident requires a more hands-on approach, the trained sta will help with bathing, dressing, and laundry.
Memory care can be a stand-alone facility but often is a separate wing of an assisted living community. It is tailored to meet the needs of people with Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia. This does not mean that occasionally having a senior moment qualifi es as dementia. Cognitive decline is a natural part of aging and can progress slowly from when a person is in their 50s. Memory care is for people with far more serious symptoms, such as confusion, inability to recognize family members, and forgetting how to accomplish daily tasks, such as brushing their teeth, eating, bathing, and dressing. They may be at risk of injuring themselves.
All facilities, from nursing homes to assisted living and memory care, are expensive. According to hoursforseniors.com, the average cost of a memory care facility in Texas exceeds
SIGNS OF DEMENTIA
It can be challenging to recognize the early warning signs of conditions that cause dementia, but they become apparent as the disease progresses. In addition to memory loss and increasing failure to remember names and faces of family members, look for these signs that may come first.
• Anxiety and nervousness
• Increased agitation and aggression
• Forgetting basic hygiene
• Getting lost more often or wandering for no purpose
• Leaving appliances turned on
• Losing weight without any apparent reason
• Forgetting to take medication
• Becoming more prone to falls and other accidents in the home
Adult children caring for an aging parent may have to face the reality that they cannot provide the level of support required
$61,000 a year. Depending on the services and amenities o ered, monthly costs can range from $2,500 to more than $4,000 for assisted living. The website said nursing homes could cost between $5,000 and $7,000 a month.
People with the foresight to purchase long-term care insurance will be comforted knowing most of these costs are covered. Medicaid and Medicare will cover a small portion of medical expenses but do not pay for rent. Thus, savings accounts a nd retirement funds will be needed to pay for assisted living or memory care. Where to start? First, do your homework. Determining whether you are looking for assisted living or memory care is essential. Know as much about a facility as possible and the reviews it has received. Then tour several facilities. What does each o er in the way of amenities? Where is the facility located? Are grocery stores and other retail shops nearby? Is there a doctor and/or nurse on sta , and is it close to medical facilities such as a hospital? What is the ratio of sta to residents, and what qualifi cations are needed to work there? Remember, whether it is for you or a loved one, this is the place you will call home, likely for the rest of your life.

A WORLD apart
EXPLORE THE ENCHANTED EAST TEXAS PINEY WOODS
BY CHRISTINA GARCIA
The forests of the East Texas Piney Woods area are a world apart, unusual to residents from the rest of the state because of the area’s dense trees. Loblolly pines give way to bald cypress on lakes and bayous, and you can paddle along using draped Spanish moss as your guide. Get lost in the relatively easy and quiet thru-hike at the Lone Star Hiking Trail, the state’s longest continuous footpath, or spend a day in the Big Thicket Preserve admiring bogs of pitcher plants. Be on the lookout for the red-cockaded woodpecker. Keep your eyes open for the flying squirrels, too. The latter are nocturnal, but both animals are among a host residing on the edge of our state.
In the small towns, find the Bed and Breakfast Capital of Texas, the Rose Capital of America, and the vintage trains shunting from Palestine to Rusk.
BIG TREES, LITTLE TOWNS
Rest & Relaxation
Officially designated the Bed and Breakfast Capital of Texas in 1997,
Jefferson, Texas, invites visitors to get cozy. Bed and breakfasts per capita led to the designation, and this historic town relishes its getaway status. Enjoy garden views at White Oak Manor. Try out a relaxed happy hour on a wraparound porch or cooking smores at the fire at The Carriage House. Stroll the pre-Civil War buildings and browse through the antique stores, take a history tour, or enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride for a quiet weekend.
Relish the Roses
Stop and smell the roses in Tyler, Texas. Nicknamed the Rose Capital of America, a significant number of the country’s roses are grown for distribution here. Be sure to visit the colorful Tyler Municipal Rose Garden, America’s largest municipal rose garden, which blooms in the spring and fall with hundreds of varieties of roses on thousands of bushes across 14 acres. Visit the Texas Rose Festival in late October, and don’t forget to come back for the Azalea Trail in March and April, too.

All Aboard
Book a ride aboard the Texas State Railroad and enjoy a journey over dozens of bridges and back in time through the Piney Woods. Choose from beautiful, luxurious, vintage seating classes for this four-hour round trip between Rusk and Palestine on cars pulled by steam locomotives or a sleek diesel streamliner from the “Golden Age” of the articulated railway. Choose climate-controlled or open-air cars offering light refreshments as part of your ticket or for purchase, depending on seat class. Day trips stop for an hour-long lunch and exploration break at the grounds of the Rusk Depot Complex.
SUNGLASSES & SUNSCREEN
Fantastic Forest
The Big Thicket National Preserve’s diverse area of national forest spreads out like a child’s squiggly line drawing on a map between the Neches River in the north and Beaumont in the south, with a long arm reaching over to Big Creek in the West and another curling toward Saratoga and Little Pine Island Bayou. It’s referred to as “units,” representing the region’s diversity. Each unit offers hiking and picnic areas, with some offering fishing, hunting, and backcountry camping. Explore the pitcher plant bog and other hidden gems in the Turkey Creek unit.
Hit the Trail
Not everyone feels called to backpacking, but for those ready to venture even further into the backcountry, the Lone Star Hiking Trail meanders across 96 miles — or longer if you take the extra loops — of the Sam Houston National
Forest in East Texas. The trip should take about a week, and fans of the trail mention the trees, which change from hardwood oak and softwood pine to towering bald cypress as the path progresses. Relatively flat, the hike begins near Richards, Texas, and ends near Cleveland, Texas. The trail is free to use year-round, though spring and fall are recommended.
Lake Life
Draped in Spanish moss, the cypress trees in Caddo Lake have been said to grow in patterns perfect for boating through as if on a trail. Luckily, Karnak’s Caddo Lake State Park canoes are available to rent. Paddle through Big Cypress Bayou or Saw Mill Pond, the latter of which you can use to reach Caddo Lake if you’re ready for a long trip. Otherwise, use the Texas Parks and Wildlife map to explore the lake. For less work, book a boat tour and let an experienced guide offer their take on the area’s wetland history and culture.
