...in the world right now. Between hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes, The Las Vegas shooting, and other dire events, many are hurting and many are questioning the reason for so much misery. But I take comfort in Romans 8:28 which promises, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”. And we certainly have seen good triumph, in many of these circumstances: neighbors pulling together to help each other, complete strangers rushing in to minister to those in need, heroic and selfless rescues, and miraculous survival stories. Please, know that our love and prayers are with everyone who’s been affected by recent events. We hope this month’s Living Magazine; our annual family edition, can serve as a delightful diversion and a reminder that, we may not know what tomorrow holds. But we know Who holds tomorrow. As Lamentation 3:23 reminds us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning.”

The Thanksgiving season is a wonderful time to not only give thanks for the blessings in our lives, but to reflect on what we’re grateful for as a community Mansfield is truly blessed on so many levels. We have a growing city with a strong economy, great city services, an excellent school district and a quality of life that draws families here from all over the state and the country. Beyond those positive traits that every city strives for, Mansfield also has a strong sense of community with residents who strive to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors and those in need. Throughout the year the city works with local civic, church and community groups to do everything from clean up trash from our parks and open spaces to helping repair homes for seniors and homeowners facing financial challenges. Each time we ask, hundreds of individuals heed the call to contribute their time, talents and, in some cases, money to assist us in these efforts. However, it isn’t just city programs that work to make difference. Organizations such as Mansfield Cares, The Wesley

The city’s churches, both individually or as a group with Mansfield Churches For the City, call on their members to give back to the community in a variety of ways. This giving spirit is part of who we are as Mansfield residents. In this season of Thanksgiving, we say thank you to those who are a blessing not only to those they help but to our entire city. November is traditionally a month to reflect on our blessings and be thankful. Even after a tough year like 2017, there’s no doubt that we in America’s Dream City have much to be thankful for. This year through our “Experience the Kindness of Our Dream City” campaign, we were blessed and amazed to witness ordinary citizens reaching out and making a difference for friends, neighbors, colleagues, city workers, and complete strangers. What began as a desire to shine a spotlight on kindnesses happening around Arlington, grew into a citywide focus on compassion and benevolence. From community gardens and canned food drives to mentoring and volunteer tutoring, from one neighbor cutting another neighbor’s grass to many of our citizens putting their lives on hold to help Houston get back on its feet, we’ve seen kindness and selflessness become a way of life in and around Arlington, like never before. To all of you who accepted the challenge to not only report the acts of kindness you witnessed but to pay it forward yourself, I want to say, “thank you”! It is truly an honor to serve as your mayor. This year has shown us that, while Arlington is an outstanding place to live, play, and work, the best years are still to come.

VOTED #1 SALON AND DAY SPA THIRTEEN YEARS RUNNING

t AVANTÉ Salon & Day Spa in Mansfield, Owners Danny and Jacqueline Hughes, Emilie Woodward, and Jamie Bunton have hand-selected each member of their team and pay careful attention to even the smallest detail of the experience their guests enjoy. From the tranquil environment to the menu of indulgent services, nothing is left to chance. Jamie Bunton

Mallory Galusha

Michelle Holderman

A proud owner, leader, and educator at AVANTÉ, Jamie loved the technology, tools, and gorgeous atmosphere of the salon, from the first moment she entered. “I love providing oneon-one coaching, always setting new goals, and pushing myself and my girls to do more than we thought we could do.” After 16 years as a stylist, Jamie still loves every day at the salon, providing highly-personalized care to her guests.

A driving scripture in Mallory’s life and work is Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” That verse drives her to go above and beyond to perfect her craft and stay on top of the latest trends and techniques for her guests. “I see my career as a way to let the light of Christ shine through me,” she said.

Michelle has a thirst for knowledge; to know everything she can about hair. “The coaching, resources, and continuing education I’m given at AVANTÉ have really helped me set myself apart from others in my field,” she said. “My mission as a hair stylist is to empower my guest to see the beauty they already hold and to educate them to achieve the things they want for themselves.”

Lauren Goforth

Brenda Stewart

Lauren feels blessed to have grown up with her brothers who were inspiring role models and to have trained under outstanding teachers and mentors. Now as an AVANTÉ stylist and educator, she says she’s surrounded by ladies who truly want the best for each other. “My goal each day is to happily serve others, to be more than a stylist to my guests, and to create bigger and better challenges for myself.”

Brenda found a unique way of combining her love for theatre (in the costume, hair, and makeup department) and the service industry. As an AVANTÉ stylist, educator, and team mate, she loves that her days are filled with meeting new people who welcome her into their lives. “I love being a part of the Mansfield Community through a business that has its guests in mind. It’s a beautiful thing,” she said.

FRUIT OF THE VINE

Surrender Your Story BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE

“Give God the right to direct your life and as you trust him along the way you’ll find he pulled it off perfectly!” (Psalm 37:5, TPT)

A

A few weeks ago during the musical worship session at church, one of the musicians sang “Surrender Your Story.” These three words pierced my heart as I considered their weightiness. I was born into this world strong-willed and determined and I’ve been trying to write my own story for decades. Though my belief in Christ has almost always existed, my full surrender has been a constant battle. Just when I think I’ve humbled myself and given Him my all, He pulls back another layer, revealing a nasty mess of twisted desire, selfish ambition, envy, and superficiality.

‘yes’.” I researched this rocking and the Yiddish term for it is “shuckling” which means “to shake.” Historians believe it initially began when Jews would read the Torah; the number of texts was limited so they would move around one another bending forward for a better view.

What does it mean to surrender? When we say “yes” to Christ’s salvation, we must also say “yes” to His Lordship, which requires a far greater level of self-denial, faith, and trust. My friend, Hanna, recently posted this on her page:

limited perception; Yes, Lord, my life is not my own—I was bought with a price and I belong to you.

Many rabbis connect the shaking during prayer to Psalm 35:10 which says, “All my bones will cry out!” The Passion Translation reads like this, “Everything inside of me will shout it out: There’s just no one like you, Lord!” Others believe the motion was adopted to help the body connect Can anyone out there relate? It was a God wink! If I could sum up my current season, in just ONE word, it would be SURRENDER. Surrendering my life to the Lord: my family, my finances, my plans... well just about everything. Doing my best to say YES to whatever He asks of me. Is it hard? OH YEAH. It’s actually not easy AT ALL. Has the Lord redirected MY plans? YES. Has He asked me to do things that make ZERO sense? YES. But you know what? The more I say YES the easier it becomes to surrender it all to Him. It’s all His anyways, right? Jenn Johnson quoted this recently and it is something I meditate on often, she said, “Let the cry of our hearts be yes, before He even asks.”

Oh, the challenge for the independent mind in a society that values individualism. If I write my story, it will be a shallow misrepresentation of all I was intended to be. If He writes my story, it will be exactly as He intended it to be, a life fashioned for His glory—not a minute wasted, a life engaged in the journey living for the eternal rather than the temporal, a story worth living, a story worth telling—my life, surrendered becomes His-story. The useless clay becomes priceless in the hands of the potter. I surrender. Dear God, may we all surrender our story.

Just Ask! TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HOLIDAY CONVERSATIONS WITH LOVED ONES—FOR YOUR HEALTH

Beyond exchanging hugs and old stories, family gatherings present an opportunity to talk to relatives about hereditary health issues. It may not be easy to ask about your grandma’s heart attack or your uncle’s battle with cancer, but these questions could save your life. “Your family medical history can help you understand your own risks,” said Shawn Sheble, a registered nurse with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “Conditions most commonly inherited include heart disease, hypertension, asthma, diabetes, osteoporosis, certain types of cancer, and some mental illnesses.” Knowing what to expect could lead to screenings or early diagnosis, and even lifestyle changes that will keep you in good condition for years to come. For example, Sheble said, if a relative has suffered breast and colon cancer at an early age, you may be predisposed too. A family history of high cholesterol could put you at greater risk of heart disease or stroke. Timely tests could rule out or identify problems, giving you the chance to take immediate action. “Gather information by talking to whoever you can, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, and your parents,” Sheble said. “Let them know you are looking out

The practice that sets the standard in both customer service and pediatric dentistry…

for your own health and the health of future generations. Be sure to tell your doctor what you’ve learned.” For the sake of etiquette, try pulling someone aside for a one-on-one conversation rather than blurting out tough questions while gathered around the dinner table. The subjects of disease and death are obviously painful so it helps to explain how this information can help you and many others.

FIVE KEY QUESTIONS You can start by choosing from the following questions suggested by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). 1. Do you have any chronic diseases, such as heart disease or diabetes, or health conditions, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol? 2. Have you had any other serious diseases, such as cancer or stroke? (If cancer, ask what type.) 3. How old were you when each of these diseases or health conditions was diagnosed? (Even the approximate age is useful.) 4. From what countries or regions did your ancestors come to the United States? 5. What were the causes and ages of death for relatives who have died?

KEEP A RECORD Be sure to write down the information you gather and keep documenting your family health history. The U.S. Surgeon General offers a helpful tool called My Family Health Portrait, a free online application you can use to keep everything organized. You can create your family health history at FamilyHistory.HHS.gov.

SHARING IS CARING Knowing is not enough, warns the CDC. Share any health records you attain along with any results from genetic testing you have done, especially with younger members of your family. If you have a medical condition, tell your family members about your diagnosis. And, of course, talk to your doctor.

Hygge is derived from a sixteenth-century Norwegian term, hugga, meaning “to comfort” or “to console.” Considered the likely origin of the English word “hug,” hygge encompasses feelings of relaxation, modest indulgence, gratitude, well-being, and coziness. deeply soothing. Now that’s hygge! Is hygge a kind of mindfulness, as well—another buzzword that has captured our attention lately? While hygge and mindfulness are not necessarily mutually exclusive, I think “presence” is more appropriate than “mindfulness.” Mindful means being attentive and aware, but it can also mean being careful. It doesn’t seem that hygge involves cognizant carefulness. Instead, it’s the sheer

simplicity of experiencing coziness, and then wrapping yourself in that feeling without forcing it.

in a hygge world, direct social interaction, personal warmth, and a genuine nature are cherished.

Perhaps it’s easier to describe what hygge does not entail—materialism, gluttony, envy, and excess. Having an enormous house, driving the fastest car on the block, or carrying the latest designer handbag (admittedly, one of my indulgences) aren’t hygge. It isn’t about one-upping your neighbors or hanging out online either, because

HOMESTEAD GETTING HYGGE WITH THE NEIGHBORS For a touch of homemade goodness this season, don’t reach for Neighborliness can be hygge. For instance, my neighbor and I look forward to sharing what has become an annual tradition. It began when he hung a finch feeder that’s visible from our front doors. I contribute thistle seeds, as does he, to keep the “finch action” going throughout the season. My initial donation was planting moon flowers which reseed each year in the same area as the bird feeder. We rejoice when the seedlings sprout, water the plants and watch them grow, then celebrate when their giant white blossoms unfurl as dusk draws near. (You might find us out there doing a goofy impromptu moon dance some evening!) All this warms our hearts and nurtures a neighborly spirit. Definitely hygge. ages, to the point that it has become part of their national character. And it seems to contribute to their overall happiness factor. According to the United Nations World Happiness Report, Denmark is considered the happiest country in the world. This is a bit surprising when you think about it. High taxes and long, cold winters with brief periods of daylight aren’t necessarily synonymous with happiness, in my opinion. And yet, the Danish people live contentedly practicing their hygge philosophy.

MORE THAN CANDLES, HOMEMADE CINNAMON ROLLS, AND COZY DECOR Sure, these things can contribute to “hygge-ness,” but hygge life will vary among us as individuals. For example, I may love cookies just out of the oven with gooey chocolate chunks whereas you may prefer sipping spring cherry green tea from a decorative porcelain tea cup or a mug your son gave you (but it’s okay to want a warm cookie to go with it!). Along with a pervasive enjoyment of cozy things, hygge is also about convivial togetherness. A casual dinner with close friends without lots of fuss and plenty of friendly, easy-going interaction is hygge. A personal favorite hygge togetherness

38

moment for me is afternoon tea with my husband—our version of a lowkey high tea. We sit in upholstered chairs with a view of the garden and drink fragrant tea steeped in handstitched silk tea bags while mired in conversation that meanders and flows from topic to topic. Our tea times together foster a deeper connection between us.

CELEBRATING THE HIGH HYGGE SEASON Naturally, the holiday season is all about hygge. Just the thought of hot cider with a cinnamon stick and holiday music playing in the background brings a cozy feeling. Sharing special moments and traditions with friends and family and adding homemade gifts to your gift exchange—also hygge. Making a gift is satisfying (and hygge) for both for you and the recipient, and it doesn’t need to be ultra time-consuming. Create a terrarium or paint a wooden bird house you picked up at the hobby store. Place some colored glass beads in the bottom of Mason jar, put a tea candle on the level beads, tie a ribbon around the opening of the jar, and voila, you have a candle holder that’s great for a deck or a kitchen table. Comfort food and evoking taste memories of happy times in the past are hygge, too. If it’s not much fuss,

make your grandmother’s fudge, your father’s special egg nog, or aunt Sarah’s free-form plum tart. Just thinking about these things makes me “hygge happy.” How about you? Hygge may be a trend right now, but it should have staying power because it’s a “good thing.” In today’s world that often seems consumed with hatred, violence, and vitriol, living the hygge life helps us appreciate the sheer art of living and perhaps, the essence of life itself.

In his Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living, Meik Wiking outlines practical ways to bring hygge into your life. One of his suggestions: create a self-care emergency kit that will help you wind down and relax at the end of a rough day. Wiking recommends making a kit that contains comforting things, such as quality chocolate, herbal tea, a soft blanket, a page-turner, a notebook and pen, and a photo album. L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . HOLIDAY HOUSEGUESTS

READY OR NOT, HERE THEY COME BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

For many of us, the holidays are synonymous with houseguests. This can be a mixed blessing. When we allow ourselves to get so bogged down in the details of hosting that we forget to enjoy our time with our guests, the typically joyous occasion can become seriously stressful. But with a little forethought and consideration, you can get your home houseguest ready—then kick back and enjoy every minute you have with your friends and family this holiday season. Think of all those chores, home repairs, and DIY projects loitering on the back burner. Impending houseguests can serve as the kick in the pants you’ve been waiting for to get them done. Give your kitchen cabinets a fresh coat of paint. Wake up that tired flowerbed. Or give your house that deep cleaning that’s going to put fresh wind in your sails. (Easier still, pay a pro to take care of it!) If your guests are of the overnight variety, consider these ten tips for making them feel at home in your house.

1. Find out beforehand what types of snacks your guests enjoy and whether they have any dietary limitations. Do they have a favorite wine or beer you can stock for them? 2. Plan a range of potential activities for your guests, from a simple shopping excursion to a cocktail party or daytrip to an amusement park. Consider what things make your town unique and make plans for your guests to experience them, if they so choose. 3. If your guests include children, make accommodations for them, too. Have

40

games and coloring books on hand. Rent a family-friendly movie or plan an age-appropriate craft. If you’ll be attending a holiday party with the parents, find the names of a few responsible local babysitters who can watch the kids. 4. If your guest room sheets have been on the bed awhile, give them a wash. They may be stale smelling. Provide plenty of extra blankets and comforters. 5. Offer current magazines or perhaps a book of short stories in the guest room in case your guest has trouble sleeping, or they rise earlier or go to sleep later than you. 6. Provide a basket with bottled water and snacks, as well as toiletries such as soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, lotion, aspirin, toothpaste, dental floss, or toothbrushes they may have forgotten. 7. Provide closet and dresser space for your guests, or at least a flat surface to open their suitcase and live out of it.

8. Place nightlights around your house so guests can find their way around at night. 9. Post your Wi-Fi network name and password in the guest room, and make sure a power outlet is accessible for chargers. 10. Guests are a perfect excuse to splurge on cute Thanksgiving or Christmas dishtowels, the holiday dishware you’ve always wanted, or a larger than usual Christmas tree. After all, you’re not doing it for yourself. It’s for your guests, right? And whatever you do, never underestimate the charm of fresh flowers in the guest room and throughout the house. Lastly, remember that the most inviting thing about your home should be you. Hosting isn’t about impressing someone with how Martha Stewart you can be, but rather about letting them know you love and value them enough to want your house to feel like their home away from home. A FREE RADICAL FIGHTER Vitamin A is excellent at repairing skin, and it’s found a-plenty in pumpkin. With their bright orange color, pumpkins are rich in carotenoids—a type of Vitamin A commonly found in fruits and vegetables—which your body breaks down into retinol. Although free radicals such as UV rays break down the skin’s elasticity and inhibit its ability to repair itself, retinol packs a punch by repairing damaged cells. Sure, you can always take Vitamin A supplements, but why not get a little extra boost straight from the gourd this season?

COLLAGEN STARTS WITH C Moving down the alphabet, pumpkins are also chock-full of Vitamin C, which is good for your body in many ways besides helping ward off a cold. As we age, our bodies naturally slow down the production of collagen, which helps keep our skin firm, plump, and elastic.

EXPERIENCE MATTERS!

Since Vitamin C is a key ingredient in collagen production, not getting enough makes it more difficult for your body to produce collagen, as well as maintain muscle and bone health. So while citrus fruits might be your go-to for Vitamin C, remember that pumpkin is also an excellent source. Just one cup of cooked pumpkin is packed with nearly 20 percent of the recommended daily amount of Vitamin C.

MINERALS ON MY MIND While vitamins are a big part of staying healthy, minerals are nothing to sneeze at. One particular mineral found in pumpkin is zinc. There’s a lot more to zinc than its potential ability to shorten the duration of a cold. In fact, there’s a lot to get excited about from a skin health perspective. Zinc is known to repair skin like a pro. Not only does it aid in cell regeneration, it can be used to treat inflammation. Skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and even dandruff may be curbed by the ingestion of zinc. Zinc is even known to help reduce acne flare-ups by moderating the amount of sebum produced by the skin. Talk about one powerful mineral, huh?

FIBER-FILLED Pumpkin is an excellent source of fiber, which is not only good for digestive health but for beauty as well. A diet with a good amount of fiber ensures that our bodies effectively rid themselves of waste and toxins. When the digestive system is run down, it can manifest as tired-looking, sallow skin. Finally, don’t forget the seeds! Pumpkin seeds are packed with as many vitamins and minerals as the pulp. Not only do they make a tasty snack, they boost your beauty factor by aiding in the growth of glossy, healthy hair. Simply rinse off the seeds you scrape them from the pulp, soak them in a bowl of salted water for a few hours, and bake for 20 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees until seeds are cooked through.

44

HOORAY FOR PUREE! For a touch of homemade goodness this season, don’t reach for store-bought canned puree for your recipes. It’s actually quite easy to make, and all you need is a fresh pumpkin and hot water. Here’s how: 1. Cut the pumpkin into chunks, removing the seeds and peel. 2. Bring water to a boil and cook 20 to 30 minutes or until the pumpkin has become soft and tender. 3. Drain and let cool completely. 4. Mash or puree and store for later. If not used right away, the puree will be freshest up to three days in the refrigerator and three months in the freezer. Happy pureeing!

Dermal fillers are also great for scars and wrinkles. A Few Thoughts on Bedroom Decorating BY LISA LANDRY OF LANDRY DESIGNS BY LISA LANDRY OF LANDRY DESIGNS

A

ll of us require a place for tranquil reflection. Your bedroom is, or should be, that special retreat. If your bedroom isn’t restful and restorative, then change it! If you share your bedroom with someone, work towards creating a mutually agreeable atmosphere of a welcoming hideaway from the outside world. Beauty and comfort can affect our mood, even our outlook on life, so creating spaces you enjoy may be more important than you think. You’ll want to consider more than sleeping accommodations in arranging your bedroom. (A quick tip: The headboard should always be placed on one of the “focal” walls as you enter the room.) The bedroom invariably becomes the chosen place to accomplish those things that require privacy and solitude—reading a book, writing letters, pursuing your favorite hobby, just relaxing, or

58

contemplating your plans for the next day. So, for starters, how can you make the focal point of your room-- the bed--be interesting and unique? Upholstered headboards are a strong design trend, as well as being extremely comfortable for those who like to read in bed. They come in lots of styles and shapes in an unlimited number of fabric, leather, or faux-leather

options, and great nail-head accents customize the look even more. Once your furniture is in place, the fun part begins! The fabrics and accessories you select add your own personal stamp to the space. To dress your bed, custom bedding adds that luxurious touch. Particularly in the master bedroom, custom bedding will set your bed apart from the limited bedding options available as a “bed in a bag.” And who wants to end up with the same bedding in their master suite that their friends or neighbors have? Duvets, comforters, coverlets and throws, along with a variety of unique pillows are guaranteed to make your bed unique, L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

and also make it take center stage in your room. Window treatments (be sure to consider privacy and light control), wall art, possibly a chaise or reading chair, a table for each person to place a drink (along with their reading glasses), and maybe a bench at the end of the bed (great for luggage or putting on shoes) can all work together to create the perfect bedroom retreat. And don’t forget the need for good reading light for all the bedrooms in your home, positioned at the correct height to cast light onto N OV E M B E R 2 01 7

the reader’s lap while reclined in bed. When you’re ready to create that perfect getaway space, you may decide to seek the advice of an interior decorator. From furniture to window treatments, and from bedding to accessories, each component becomes an extremely important part of the whole—a puzzle if you will. Interior decorators are trained to work with you to make sure all those puzzle pieces fit together perfectly. Sweet dreams!

ADVENTURE

COOL WEATHER

CAMPING

Explore, unplug, relax, and share family togetherness BY ANNETTE BROOKS

S

tifling heat, humidity, and swarms of mosquitoes don’t necessarily suggest an ideal camping scenario, even if you’re into “glamping” in a tricked out fifth wheel. Luckily, with the hot days of summer long behind us, camping can take on new life in Texas. Some of the best camping weather in the Lone Star state comes in late autumn and early winter. All it takes is a little basic planning up front and bringing along items that will keep you warm. Start by selecting a couple of weekends you can devote to camping and then steer clear of the temptation to schedule activities that will kibosh your plans. Watch the weather forecast

60

to see if storms or high winds are brewing, and remember to check ahead of time for any seasonal changes in campground hours or closings.

Gearing Up for Temperature Changes, Cool Nights Keeping warm is a concern that comes with cool weather camping, but don’t let that deter you. Sure, weather highs and lows can vary—just dress in layers that can be removed or added. This allows you to easily adapt to temperature changes, regardless of whether they are gradual or sudden. Essential items include a jacket, hat, gloves, and rain gear. A sturdy pair of hiking boots is also a good idea no matter what time of year you camp.

Bring items that will keep you warm and toasty at night. In addition to a cold weather-rated sleeping bag and a closed-cell foam pad to place beneath it for extra insulation, it’s wise to invest in long underwear. Pack an extra pair or two of thick socks to ensure you have a dry pair to wear at night. Wear a neck gaiter if your neck tends to get cold, and slip on a knitted hat to help you warm up when you first get into your bag. You can easily pull it off later if you get hot. Drinking a warm, nonalcoholic beverage before hopping in the bag can help, too, although remember that it may cause you to get up in the middle of the night for a bathroom break. (Alcohol dilates blood vessels and may accelerate heat loss.) L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

ADVENTURE Fun, Family-Friendly Camping Activities There are many activities that don’t require packing lots of extra gear—after all, you’re a camper, not a pack animal! Here are a few ideas. Instead of hiking just to hike, spend some time ID’ing plants. This gives you a chance to explore and stay active, and to possibly learn something new as well. Camping isn’t complete without s’mores. Check out creative ideas at TheKitchn.com (salty caramel bacon s’mores, anyone?), then bring along the ingredients in addition to the usual graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars—and let the deliciousness begin. Discover the stars. Beautiful, cool, clear nights are great for star gazing. There are a variety of online sources where you can download easyto-follow star maps. Use these to help identify constellations. While you’re at it, be on the lookout for a possible shooting star and make a wish. Play camping games. Don’t be tempted to bring an iPad in case the kids get bored. Time away from electronics gives everyone an opportunity to interact and play. Washer toss, for example, is a fun game for players of all ages. It’s like horseshoes but easier, and requires minimal gear—two targets consisting of a square box with a circle of plastic pipe in the center, and metal washers in two colors (three of each). You can buy washer toss games, but they’re easy to make. You can find lots of instructions online. Teach your children safety and cooperation, and lead by example. Camping is a good time to foster an understanding of the importance of safety in the wilderness. Educate children about being aware of their surroundings and get them involved in the camping experience from the beginning planning stages through to campsite cleanup. Teach them how to set up and break down camp, gather firewood and tinder, etc. Tell campfire stories and sing songs. Sitting around an evening campfire is a perfect time to share family memories and make new ones. And of course, stories and songs are part of the experience. If you’re looking for story ideas to tell with your family, check out the book, Spooky Campfire Stories: Outdoor Myths And Tales For All Ages.

EASY CAMPFIRE BREAKFAST BURRITOS Campfire breakfasts may be pretty much the best food on the planet. The smells and crackling sounds of bacon and eggs cooked over an open fire entice even nonbreakfast eaters to indulge. This satisfying Tex-Mex favorite with make ahead prep will leave you ready to conquer the outdoor adventures of the day. INGREDIENTS: • large flour tortillas • Yukon gold potatoes, peeled, parboiled until just tender but not falling apart, and chopped (about one potato per burrito) • salt and pepper • green onions, sliced • breakfast sausage or chorizo, browned and crumbled, • about ¼ cup per burrito • eggs, beaten (about two per burrito) • cheddar cheese, grated • heavy-duty foil

Your Smile is Our Business…

PREPARATION: Season parboiled potatoes with salt and pepper. Add sliced green onions (about 1 tablespoon per burrito) and browned breakfast sausage or chorizo. Stir to combine then place into a plastic zipper bag or portable container. Refrigerate or store in cooler until ready to make burritos. At the campsite, warm a lightly oiled cast iron skillet over the campfire. Add the potato/sausage mixture to the hot pan, stirring often until potatoes begin to brown and mixture is heated through. Add beaten eggs, stir mixture and cook until eggs are scrambled. Place a tortilla on top of a large square of foil, top with potato/sausage/egg mixture, sprinkle cheese on top. Fold each burrito, roll it up in foil, place over the campfire. Cook burritos, flipping once, about four to five minutes per side depending on the heat of your campfire. The tortillas may get some browning and charring on them. Watch carefully not to burn. Serve with hot sauce. L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

HOLIDAY FOOD FACT The first commercially made cranberry sauce hit store shelves in 1912. Americans consume approximately 5,062,500 gallons of jellied cranberry sauce every holiday season. The ruby red, gelatinous log is served at 94 percent of Thanksgiving dinners.

THE OLD TABLECLOTH TRICK Instead of buying tablecloths for each holiday, start a new tradition. Purchase one and have guests sign it before holiday dinners. When the holiday is over, embroider over each guest’s signature, creating a holiday heirloom.

A LOOK AT SOME HOLIDAY FUN FACTS—AND A FEW IDEAS FOR STARTING SOME NEW TRADITIONS

70

L I V I NGMAG A Z IN E . N E T

FRIENDSGIVING

It’s better to give than to receive, but you have to know when to give. If you feel like giving back this holiday season, why not volunteer at a soup kitchen? Consider showing up not on Thanksgiving or Christmas day, when most soup kitchens are already bursting at the seams with volunteers, but a week before or after a big holiday. People who are dealing with stress or loneliness related to an impending or recently passed holiday will appreciate it.

We all know Thanksgiving is the day when family (ideally) gathers around the dining room table looking like a Norman Rockwell painting. But what if you aren’t able to make it to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner? Don’t despair and succumb to holiday depression. Why not host a Friendsgiving? Invite all your friends who can’t get home for the holidays. The best part is it doesn’t even have to be on the fourth Thursday in November. You can pick any date you want. Now that sounds like something Norman Rockwell might draw.

WHAT’S SHAKIN’?

HOLIDAY ON ICE(LAND)

If you’re looking for a way to keep the kiddos busy before a holiday meal, put them in charge of making butter. Simply fill some mason jars halfway with heavy cream, seal tightly, and let the youngsters shake the daylights out of them. It takes about fifteen minutes of diligent shaking for the cream to turn into butter. When a ball of butter forms in the jar, drain off the liquid (which is buttermilk) and press out the remaining liquid with a wooden spoon. Stir in a bit of salt if you wish, and the butter for your bread will be extra special.

The average Texan might not know a lot about Iceland other than Björk’s swan dress and the fact it’s ironically warmer than Greenland, but they have one of the most charming Christmas traditions American families should adopt. It’s called Jólabókaflóð. It’s pronounced… Well, don’t worry about how it’s pronounced.

GIVING BACK

N OV E M B E R 2 01 7

On Christmas Eve, everyone in Iceland gets a book, and spends the entire day absorbed in their new literature while eating chocolate. This is a tradition you could implement in your family as is, or try adapting for a larger group.

71

The Law Office of Lauren Gaydos Duffer, P.C. HOLIDAY FOOD FACT If you’ve ever thought putting marshmallows on sweet potatoes was kind of a cracker jack idea, maybe that’s because the Cracker Jack company originally printed the recipe for this holiday fixture in a booklet of recipes published in 1917. It was all in an effort to get people cooking with marshmallows. inute Free 30 m ns at our consultatio office Arlington onth em during th ber. of Novem

This time of year, everyone is invited to ornament exchanges or white elephant gift parties. Most people end up getting an ornament that doesn’t go with their personal taste or some gag gift which is going to be discarded at the earliest opportunity. Instead, host a party where everyone is encouraged to bring a copy of their all-time favorite fiction book and have a white elephant book exchange. You could even give some chocolate for people to eat when they read their new book. Now that’s the true spirit of… that.

SANTA’S SECRET SPIES The trend of elves spying on children and reporting back to Santa on their naughty and nice behavior seemed to have come out of nowhere. In reality, this tradition has been a staple of many families for generations. Santa’s helper can take many forms—not just an elf with a really good publicist. You can get one of Santa’s helpers anywhere, including a dollar store. Take your pick! It doesn’t matter if it’s a stuffed animal, snowman, or reindeer. They will move around your house just as well as an elf. The children will never know where it will turn up next. It can be in the bathroom, on your Christmas tree, or

72

even on the shelf. He or she will be more than happy to tell the big guy up north whether or not the children in your life deserve presents or coal.

EASY BREEZY CHRISTMAS EVE-Y With all the hard work that goes in to making your family’s magical Christmas Day meals and traditions come to life, why don’t you make it easier on yourself by making Christmas Eve a breeze? A fun, contemporary idea for Christmas Eve dinner is for each family member to pick out a frozen appetizer of his or her choice, then cook them up and enjoy serving them buffet style. No muss. no fuss!

MERRY KITSCHMAS! If you’re longing for a simpler time, break out your finest 50s attire and celebrate this holiday in retro style. Not only is a kitschmas party wholesome good fun, it’s also an economical crowd pleaser. Set the scene with an aluminum or heavily flocked tinseled tree and decorate with anything that would have been at home in Donna Reed’s living room. Put on some classic Christmas albums (bonus points for vinyl albums playing in the corner).

For refreshments, the crazier the better. Deviled eggs served with party crackers and cream cheese make excellent appetizers. For the main course, look for any old recipes with “loaf,” “casserole,” or “surprise” in the title. Don’t forget the gelatin salads! Keep desserts simple with a variety of pies and a pineapple upside down cake. This is the perfect time to use your grandmother’s punch bowl.
