Looking for a good night’s sleep?

Do you suffer from chronic snoring or sleep apnea? If the thought of wearing a breathing mask while you sleep doesn’t appeal to you, here’s some good news. Many people with sleep apnea can benefit from a more subtle form of treatment: an oral appliance that is made just for you. This lightweight device fits over the teeth and slightly repositions the jaw to unblock the airway. It’s a more comfortable and less noticeable way to get a good night’s sleep—and it may be right for you!

Looking for an Alternative to CPAP? Contact Dr. Sandi Hamm at 817-477-4441 to schedule a FREE consultation!

“IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS: FOR THIS IS GOD’S WILL FOR YOU IN CHRIST JESUS.” 1 THESSALONIANS 5:18

ing. I’ve been blessed with five children, five grandchildren, amazing parents and a Godly husband to share my life. I live in God’s country surrounded by friends and family who are precious to me. And I have a career I love with clients and colleagues who make my life better, every day. My cup truly runneth over. As the psalmist wrote, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1) I hope you’ll join me this month—and always—in thanking God for the countless blessings He’s given us.

The City’s website has a whole new look, with a lot of new ways to stay connected to what’s happening and take care of City business online. City staff spent the last year working on the redesign of mansfieldtexas.gov, tapping government website company CivicPlus to assist with the new design and implement more more user friendly features and expand the city’s digital communications effort. There’s a great tool called Notify Me where residents can tailor their online experience and get email, phone or text messages when City calendars are updated, when news stories are posted and when online newsletters are produced. There is also a new emergency alert system offering more efficiency, diversity and user control than the

previous system. Code Red is no longer active in Mansfield. So you will need to go online to https://www.mansfieldtexas.gov/312/Mansfield-Emergency-Alert-System and register an account on the new system. Once registered then select the group messages you want to receive and how you want to receive them. We believe the new website offers our residents a better online experience. We’re excited for you to try it out.

As we gather family and friends for Thanksgiving, may I share what I’m thankful for as Mayor of this great city: 1. I get to be Mayor where I grew up, a city of friendly people with a passion for family, philanthropy and fun. 2. Grand Prairie continues to add retail, restaurant and commercial development, including the recently approved Epic East Retail Center to begin construction in early 2020, with stores opening late 2020. 3. Main Event Entertainment Center opens early 2020 bringing family fun and more reasons to visit Grand Prairie. 4. Our new City Hall will open in December, linking

Don’t look now, Arlington, but fall is upon us. It’s the time of year to stop and reflect on all our blessings. Here in The American Dream City our cup runneth over. And there’s no doubt one of the main things that make this a place like no other is the people who call Arlington home. Dr. Moody Alexander is one of them. A popular local orthodontist, Dr. Alexander helped found the non-profit, EthiopiaSmile in 2010. Since then, the group has provided free dental care to several hundred Ethiopians each year, primarily orphans, widows, the elderly, and those with dental infections. This in a country of 80 million people with fewer than 100 trained dentists. During that time, Dr. Alexander and his wife, Emily, have adopted three children from Ethiopia, making them parents of seven amazing children who no doubt will follow the example of love and selflessness their parents

GRA ND PRAI RI E the existing City Hall and Development into one unit making it easier for customers to find us and gain access to city services. 5. My Mayor’s Mentors program is matching mentors with kids on the Big Brothers Big Sister wait list, creating dynamic and positive relationships that will benefit our future. 6. Our City Council and management team are among the best in the nation, as evidenced by a host of national awards for Parks, Libraries, Police, Fire and more. Live Life Grand,

A RLINGTON have laid out for them. This year, the American Board of Orthodontics honored Dr. Alexander with their 2019 Humanitarian Award at their Excellence in Orthodontics Luncheon and Awards Ceremony. “The American dream to me is a community of faith, love, and kindness, and a community that wants to better each other and help each other on the journey,” Dr. Alexander said. During this month of Thanksgiving, we want to say thank you, Dr. Alexander, for helping make Arlington, Texas a better place to live, work, play, and serve.

It ’s hard to imag ine anyone but America’s most likable working actor portraying the broadly loved Fred (Mister) Rogers, and Hanks takes on the role in a film based on once-cynical journalist Tom Junod’s profile of Rogers, originally published in Esquire in 1998. Widely praised upon its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the biopic looks to be a powerful family feature just in time for the holidays.

In my final months, I came to the sad reality that my life really did have a fourth quarter and the clock really would run out on me. I took the time to convey some thoughts that reflect back on my rich and full life. I’ve long recognized the power of effective communication. That’s why in my later years I began to reflect on the many life lessons I learned along the way, and shared them with all who would listen. Fortunately, I found the young have a thirst for this message. Many times over the years, I was fortunate enough to speak at student commencement ceremonies, and that gave me the chance to look out into a sea of the future and share some of these thoughts with young minds. My favor ite of these speeches included my grandchildren in the audience. W h at I wo u l d t e l l t h e m w a s t h i s Depression-er a baby f rom t i ny Holdenville, Oklahoma — that wide expanse where the pavement ends, the West begins, and the Rock Island crosses the Frisco — lived a pretty good life.

PON HIS PASSING IN SEPTEMBER, a message from

long-time Dallas resident T. Boone Pickens was posted to his social media pages and website. We’ve decided to let his anecdotes speak for themselves by excerpting a few small parts of his note here. You can read the full message at BoonePickens.com. If you are reading this, I have passed on from this world— not as big a deal for you as it was for me.

In those speeches, I’d always of fer these future leaders a deal: I would trade them my wealth and success, my 68,000-acre ranch and private jet, in exchange for their seat in the audience. That way, I told them, I’d get the opportunity to start over, experience every opportunity America has to offer. It’s your shot now. Over the years, my staff got used to hearing me in a meeting or on the phone asking, “Whaddya got?” That’s probably what my Maker is asking me about now. Here’s my best answer. I left an undying love for America, and the hope it presents for all. I left a passion for entrepreneurship, and the promise it sustains. I left the belief that future generations can and will do better than my own. Thank you. It’s time we all move on.

IT’S TIME FOR CONCIERGE CARE Resurgence Wellness was the brainchild of Chris Chappell. Not one to toot his own horn, Chris just wanted to fi nd a more patient-centered healthcare model, one where the patient was calling the shots and the goal was not “sick care” but wellness equality. It was an idea whose time had come, and he now finds himself flying all over the country to give his patients the care they need and deserve. Resurgence Wellness caters to the patient looking for better overall health, more time with their primary care provider and no waiting or rushed appointments. House calls and office calls are just the beginning.

HOLISTIC CARE Modern medicine has become very specialized— with specialists for each part of the body who aren’t necessarily communicating with one another. Resurgence Wellness medical professionals looks at each patient as a whole—physically, environmentally, spiritually, nutritionally, emotionally, socially, and in other ways and considers how the different systems of the body relate to one another. They consider (for instance) the way an issue with the heart relates to a hormone imbalance or how stress may be affecting the digestive system. Although they believe modern pharmaceuticals can be a wonderful thing, they consider them as a last resort, after all conservative treatment options have been exhausted.

COOLSCULPTING Winter is the perfect time to work on getting your body ready for Summer 2020. Resurgence Wellness patients are doing just that with the help of next-generation body sculpting technology. CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared laser that non-invasively freezes away fat. Backed by more than ten years of research at Harvard University, CoolSculpting can eliminate areas of stubborn body fat from the abdomen, flanks, and thighs without surgery, often removing 20-37% of fat cells from the targeted area permanently. CoolSculpting is relatively painless and patients can resume their daily activities immediately.

HAIR RESTORATION Thinning hair is embarrassing enough for a man. But did you know that thirty percent of women over age 30 suffer from temporary or permanent loss of the hair on the head and/or eyebrows. In the past, women have tried topical lotions, medication, and traditional hair transplants with varying success.

Resurgence Wellness is seeing astounding results in men and women who are struggling with hair loss. With using a unique combination of PRP, exosomes, biotin medication and other elements. Resurgence Wellness is able to individualize your treatment plan.

JOIN THE RW TEAM Not sure where to start? Resurgence Wellness offers a variety of health tests including Dexa Scan, 3D-Fit, blood testing, genetic testing, nutrient testing, and allergy testing to give you a clearer idea what your body needs and where to begin your journey to wellness. AWAY IF YOU HAD JUST MINUTES TO LIVE, WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD GO WHEN YOU DIED? BY K AR E N WI LLIAMS ON

ooner or later, we are all faced with the reality that we don’t live forever here on Earth. My dad faced it in 2014. My mom is a Christian and took us to church at an early age. My dad—a great man, husband, and father—wasn’t. He was an engineer at NASA who was raised on a family farm in Yukon, Oklahoma. I came to know the Lord at the age of 12 and my dad made a rare appearance at church to come to my baptism. It meant the world to me. My mom told me that as they began singing hymns, he said, “I have no idea what any of this means.” Have you ever felt that way?

There were many people who touched my dad’s life, some who were good Christians— and others who claimed they were but didn’t act that way and really turned my dad against becoming one. My dad worked hard, saved his money, and could fix just about anything. When my parents moved to Rockwall and my mom began attending church at the First Baptist Church of Rockwall, Pastor Steve Swofford got to know my dad and took an interest in his workshop. Those little connections are so important. My dad respected Pastor Swofford, but still didn’t think that knowing or believing in God would ever be relevant to his own life. In the early months of 2014, my dad was diagnosed with cancer. It was in his kidney, his spine, and pelvis. We watched my dad try to tackle this problem with the same methodical precision as he would anything he needed to fix. But his cancer couldn’t be fixed. When you realize you are at the end of your rope, you will contemplate, if you never have before, what will happen to you when you die, heaven and hell. We will all live in eternity somewhere. My dad asked to meet with Pastor Steve and talk about it. Something in our conscience tells us there must be a Creator. If a tornado ripped through a barn and whirled up all the metal, would we expect after the tornado to see a perfectly made barn and tractor, with all the intricate details allowing the tractor to run and the barn to stand? Many assume that our intricate bodies, our intricate world, came about because of a big bang and so order came from chaos. But there was a designer for Mount Rushmore, a designer for the building you work in, and a designer for your teeth and jaw. I’ve studied as a dentist for 25 years and still can’t believe how amazingly intricate just a single nerve system for a tooth is. Have you ever seen a molar shaped tooth in the front of someone’s mouth? The tooth buds for our permanent teeth are already forming by twenty weeks after conception—the enamel, the dentin, the nerves that allow us to feel ice cold Blue Bell ice cream. And at around age six, that molar emerges in the mouth in

its usual molar spot. Is that not amazing? I can’t study things like that and not believe there is a Creator. So, on a magnificent day in July, my dad told Pastor Steve that he had always tried to live a good life. But he had had some bad thoughts. He had told some little lies. He had sinned— which is enough to keep us from a holy and perfect God who loves us so much He had his own, His one and only Son, given as the sacrifice for our sins so we could be with Him forever. My dad realized that day what sin was in its simplest form. My dad realized that day who God was. My dad realized that day that he owed a debt he couldn’t pay, just as none of us can. We can’t work enough, serve enough, live long enough, pray enough, teach enough, be kind enough to ever cancel that debt to God.

If you are struggling

Thankfully, God made it easy. He said, “here is my Son.” Jesus paid our debt. And we all have equal access to Jesus Christ as our savior. He came for all of us. My dad prayed to God that day, asking Him to forgive him for his sin, accepting Jesus as the debt-payer. My dad realized he couldn’t save himself— but God provided his Savior. At the age of 78, after so many people prayed for my dad, he was saved.

with whether God is real, how this world came into being, or if you just want to know more about the Creator who made you, email the address below and we will be happy to

Three weeks later, my dad went to be with His Lord in peace. And what a difference that makes. My dad was one heartbeat away, as we all are, and now for all of eternity he will enjoy being in the presence of the One who made him, the One who made my dad’s engineering brain and his big heart of love for his wife, kids, grandkids—the one who now holds him forever.

send you the book

At my dad’s funeral, my brother spoke about how nothing except cancer, the thing my dad couldn’t fix, could have ever brought him to a place of wanting to know what the minute after death would look like. I’m so overjoyed that Jesus Christ took my dad’s place and mine on that cross.

“I’ve had the honor or representing hundreds of families going through all types of divorces—many of which include complex, separate property estates,” Donna said. “These cases require the knowledge and experience of a boardcertified litigation lawyer with 33 years of specialization in the field.” Donna’s tag line, “When your family and finances matter, EXPERIENCE COUNTS” is more than just a slogan. Donna and her team possess the trial experience of litigating and winning and managing high conflict custody cases to ensure the best outcome for their clients, the children, and

the whole family unit. “As my firm grew and I needed to add attorneys. I carefully hand selected two of the most dynamic and passionate family law attorneys I know,” Donna said. “Desaray Muma joined me four years ago. She’s highly capable lawyer in the courtroom as well as being trained in the collaborative practice of family law. Together we grew the firm so rapidly that we needed to add a third attorney to the practice. We were lucky enough to join forces with, Michael A. Munoz, a senior litigation lawyer with almost 15 years of family law experience. We’ve also have an amazing staff of paralegals, legal assistants,

The décor is fun and eclectic, filled with an art collection she carefully curated to provide the nicest possible environment to foster the kindest resolution of the ugliest of family law situations. “We even have a ‘divorce therapy’ dog on staff, as it’s a proven fact that animals, especially dogs, lower the heart rate and calm the senses,” Donna said. “Baxter is an integral part of our intentional commitment to the resolution of family law matters in the most therapeutic setting possible at The Family Law Firm of Donna J. Smiedt, PLLC.” Donna herself graduated high school at age 15, a year after she moved to the United States from South Africa. By age 19, she had earned her undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and went on to be one of the Southern Methodist University School of Law’s youngest graduates in history, finishing her law degree at only 22.

Since then, she’s worked passionately to improve the lives of her clients as they move through troubled times. She credits her passion to the fact that she fully believes in the importance of the work she does and is proud to be able to offer her clients a safe and understanding system of support as well as effective legal solutions. It’s no wonder Donna has been named Family Law Attorney of the Year in Arlington and was voted Top Family Law Attorney in Fort Worth by her peers again this year. “Our family law center exists to provide families with a variety of options, at one of the most difficult times of their lives, when emotions run high,” Donna said. “We are the dispassionate voice of advice, tempered with empathy for their stressful situation, guiding them from the dark to the light in their divorce or custody experience.”

aesthetics | BERRY BEAUTIFUL

Coming down from the giddiness of pumpkin spice and apple cider doesn’t mean the seasonal food bender has to end. We know fresh fruits and vegetables have great health and beauty benefits, but it doesn’t have to stop in the kitchen. One particular fruit, the lowly cranberry, is a gem hidden in plain sight. Cranberries have long been touted for their health benefits both inside and out. The fruit of evergreen dwarf shrubs which are native to North America, cranberries bear antioxidants and other properties that help keep your skin looking and feeling radiant, smooth, and youthful. Cranberries offer the perfect trifecta of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, along with enzymes that act as an exfoliant, which can tackle the dry outermost layer of skin and leave it silky smooth. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that they have many anti-aging properties as well. Rich in antioxidants essential for protecting skin against damaging environmental stressors and free radicals, the cranberry also has a high amount of vitamins A and C, which help stimulate collagen production.

DELICIOUS DIY CRANBERRY BODY SCRUB Your face isn’t the only part of your body that can reap the benefits of some cranberry therapy. For a revitalizing scrub sweet enough to eat, all you’ll need are a few simple ingredients from your kitchen. • 1 cup fresh cranberries • 1/ 8

CRANBERRY INFUSED PRODUCTS WE LOVE Everyone deserves to relax during the holiday season, so help your skin kick off those met aphor ical heels w ith this beautif y ing seasonal ingredient. ARCONA’s Cranberry Toner is everything a toner should be—it tones and tightens the pores while locking in moisture, the cranberry extract giving an extra boost of moisture as well as antimicrobial properties. Derma E’s Rosehip & Cranberry face oil is a godsend for those dry, cold nights. f ter tracking what I did with the number of hours I spent connected and online for a single week, I found myself shocked at just how much time I’d been wasting on well, nothing much at all. So I promised myself I’d explore the world around me and connect with nature, friends, and family instead of spending so much time behind a computer screen or hunkered over my smart phone. I tried it on while vacationing on a tropical island last year and was pleased to discover my stress level went from full throttle to almost zero. It felt like I had reset my soul—which led me to search for more getaways that I thought might encourage me to unplug. After comparing options, I settled on three destinations, each with its own unique allure.

The Colorado Ghost Town How could a ghost town be a great vacation destination? As it turns out, this once-forgotten 1800s mining town has been reborn as a rustic luxury resort called Dunton Hot Springs. As soon as I set eyes on the carefully renovated, hand-hewn log cabins nestled together in an alpine valley, tastefully decorated and featuring modern amenities, I felt a sense of peaceful community and blissful serenity wash over me. The resort, a Relais & Chateau property, offers rustic charm effortlessly blended with creature comforts and outdoorsy options. Located just across the mountain from Telluride, the community rests on 200 acres but owns 1,600 surrounding acres which guests can enjoy. During the day, you can participate in extra activities such as horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and fly fishing. In the winter, enjoy snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and sleigh rides. The price includes the room, three freshly prepared hot meals, and a daily cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres. The community boasts a saloon, dance hall, library, and chapel, as

Slow down and restore your body with a natural treatment and massage at their spa or refresh your spirit with an hour-long yoga or meditation session. At the end of the day, the threecourse dinner with sommelier-paired wines is a wonderful way to unwind before heading back to your cabin.

Searching for a laid-back beach getaway without throngs of tourists, I found what I was looking for in the small seaside village of Máncora. Located on Peru’s northern Pacific coast, this strip of sandy beaches lies between a craggy desert and the open ocean. Accessible from Lima, Peru—getting there from Lima is an adventure in itself—Máncora’s year-round sunshine and waves make it a great spot to escape from it all.

eat ocean-fresh fish and seafood to your heart’s content before waking up your palate with Pisco Sour—a foamy Peruvian cocktail made from pisco (brandy), lime juice, simple syrup, and egg white. It’s prepared in a chilled cocktail shaker and topped with a dash of bitters. Try it. Seriously. You’ll be hooked. Lodging ranges from upscale to basic. I stayed at Arennas Máncora, perched on the ocean just outside of town. Peaceful and quiet, it offers a tranquil, modern style and a beautiful private beach. With a day spa, a restaurant serving Peruvian inspired dishes, and a bar pouring to-die-for passionfruit mojitos, it’s easy to spend time just kicking back at the hotel. Your only decisions will be whether to experience a ceviche class taught by their executive chef, lounge by a lovely palm-shaded pool, relax with a spa treatment, or take a romantic walk along the beach at sunset.

Off the Grid in Belize

An adventurer at heart, I couldn’t resist Ian Anderson’s Cave Branch Adventure Company and Jungle Lodge. With tree house suites available and situated in the heart of Belize in a pristine rainforest, the Lodge offers luxury accommodations furnished with locally sourced marble and hardwood furniture, “elegantly integrated into the surrounding nature.” My tree house room was as incredible as I imaged it would be, replete with stunning natural views and jungle sounds, including those of nearby howler monkeys. I enjoyed the modern comforts of air conditioning and hot and cold running water up in my awesome tree house.

OUR FAMILY PROVIDES THE MAIN DISH, a couple of vegetable sides, and a few drinks. Everyone else is invited to bring an appetizer, a dessert, a side, or drinks. There is no rhythm to the flow. People arrive and set their contribution on the large kitchen island. Ahead of time, I set out napkins, disposable plates, cups, and cutlery. I make sure the bathrooms and main areas are relatively clean and inviting. We briefly say a thankful prayer before the meal, being mindful that not everyone may be of the same faith. Everyone casually helps themselves and we all have meaningful conversations while the children play outdoors. That’s a typical day of gathering at the Chavez Household. I grew up in a family of seven plus an occasional dog. At the age of five, my father bought a home in Texas while he struggled with his professional life as a teacher. My mother, a stay-at-home mom, always made sure there were parties at our house even when finances were not looking good. However, the best events were at my grandparents’ home. Once school was let out for the holidays or vacations, we would drive up from El Paso to Colorado, where my mom’s side of the family had immigrated in the 60s. With an extended family of over 65, those celebrations became a learning opportunity. I saw people interacting and being there for each other. Traditions and customs of Mexican heritage were passed down at these gatherings. My grandparents passed away a few years ago in their early 90s, but even in their late years, they still enjoyed having people visit and made ordinary days into celebrations. I am so thankful that their fondness for congregation was passed down to me. Gathering with people over a meal has been the most meaningful and rewarding skill I have mastered as a citizen of this earth. Are you feeling disconnected? I encourage you to try it. Graciously welcome people to join you in this life. Who knows? One day we might end up at the same table sharing a meal.
