With Diet Solution Centers, I have been able to achieve my goal of a healthier lifestyle. After trying other diets throughout the years, this program has worked for me by increasing my energy level and decreasing my sugar cravings. At my last annual physical, I had managed to lower my A1C as well as my BMI. I've found that it is never too late to change your eating habits and improve your health.

letter from the publisher

publishing PUBLISHER Misty Daniels EDITOR Heather Witherspoon

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” Isaiah 6:8 Here’s something I’ve learned, over the past few years. Kindness inspires more kindness. When someone reaches out to you with a kind word or unexpected gesture, it’s only natural to want to do the same for someone else. The year 2020, perhaps like no other year, has been a great time to take our minds off ourselves and look for ways to serve others. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word or an encouraging text. In the book of Isaiah, the profit sees God in a vision and the Lord asks, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”. Isaiah’s response is quick and sincere. “Here am I. send me.” Rather than asking God for something—as we’re usually all too ready to do—Isaiah wants to know what he can do for God and for God’s people, what he can give, where he can serve. When we come to God with a simple and heartfelt offer to be useful to His kingdom, He always responds. As we enter this holiday season, I hope you’ll join me in looking for ways we can all give of ourselves to others.

letters from

O U R M AYO R S mayor

DAVID COOK

Mansfield is known for its great community special events. In fact, it’s what drew the attention of Money Magazine when they named us one of the “Best Places to Live in America.” After months of postponements and cancellations, we got back to the fun last month with Music Alley in our historic downtown. With safeguards in place, many were able to enjoy celebrating fall. Now, it’s time to think about the holidays. Having outgrown our annual holiday celebration at City Hall each year, we’re now bringing Santa, the tree lighting, the fireworks and so much more to Historic Downtown for two days, Dec. 4-5. There will be activities at The LOT, including the tree lighting, and a carnival midway along Main Street.

mayor

And there will be not one, but two nights of fireworks over the Main Street Bridge. It’s more family fun, more room to spread out and more holiday energy for our fabulous historic downtown. We know how to put the special in special events. This holiday begins a new tradition for Mansfield.

RON JENSEN

My 70th birthday is Dec. 27, 2020, and to help me celebrate, we’ve created 70 days and 70 ways you can support our community, all of which can be found at www.gptx.org/70for70. From a scavenger hunt to photos along the trail of murals, from pics with my avatar located throughout town to helping out your favorite charity, from sending seven Christmas cards to seven friends to free desserts at participating restaurants on my birthday weekend, from getting a library card to checking out a digital or hardbound book at a Grand Prairie library, adopting an animal at Prairie Paws Animal Shelter to doing something nice for a neighbor, thank you for helping me turn 70 by serving and celebrating Grand Prairie. And, I want to know what you are doing, so if you make social media posts as part of the celebration, be sure to use #MayorJensen70-

mayor

MA NS FI ELD

GRA ND PRAI RI E for70 and tag me on your Facebook posts. Each week for ten weeks, we will release seven ideas to celebrate and be thankful for our great Grand Prairie community. In fact, 94% of residents said they loved the Grand Prairie quality of life in a recent random photo survey conducted by the city. I am blessed to be able to represent as Mayor the city where I grew up, and following Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price’s example upon her 70th birthday, I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage others to be kind, do something for someone else, explore Grand Prairie and help make Grand Prairie even greater. As we enter the holiday season, stay masked, socially distanced and have a happy Thanksgiving holiday.

JEFF WILLIAMS

Wow, what a time we’re living through. Last month saw early voting records throughout our state like I don’t remember in my lifetime. In fact, for much of the month, Texas led the nation in early voting. I know many of you happily waited in long lines, patiently adhering to COVID safety protocol for your chance to have your voice heard. If you missed out on early voting, mark your calendar for November 3rd, vote your conscience, and make your mark on history. Our hats off to The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation who has awarded a $35,000 grant to help the Arlington Life Shelter incorporate a Boys & Girls Clubs Tarrant County location inside its newly renovated shelter. The Carol Zimmer Branch, named for long-time children’s advocate Carol Zimmer, is expected to serve up to 30 children at the shelter each day. Since 1987, the mission of the Arlington

A RLINGTON Life Shelter has been to promote self-sufficiency by providing shelter, employment programs, and transitional services for North Texans impacted by homelessness. The two-story, 12,000-square-foot building at 325 West Division Street includes an expanded kitchen and dining room, age-appropriate children’s areas including a playground, a classroom, daytime common area, technology center to support training and employment searches, and family bedrooms that allow parents and children to stay together. This holiday season might look a little different but it’s still a time to celebrate family and friends and reflect on our many blessings. We are truly blessed here in the American Dream City. Happy Thanksgiving to your family from the Williams family. november 2020

The entire world knows Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future, Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties, and Mike Flaherty in Spin City. Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson’s advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, the world’s leading nonprofit funder of PD science. His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism. His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges.

WHO are you? WHERE are you? WHAT do you want? A N E XC E R P T F R O M D R E A M B I G BY B O B G O F F

’ve been flying airplanes for twenty years. Still, every time I come in for a landing, I tell the tower I’m a student pilot. Mainly because I still am. What I’ve found is the people in the control tower are nicer to me over the radio because I’m a student. No one cuts off a student driver, right? Well, some of you do, but you should feel really bad about it. If you want to engage your ambitions like you never have before, self-identify as a student in all things—be a student dater, student husband, student employee. You get the idea. We’re all amateurs at love and acceptance. Nobody goes pro and gets sponsored by Hershey’s Kisses or the Hallmark Channel. Don’t be a pain but ask people you admire lots of questions. Let them know you’re still a student and want to learn. Sure, some people will blow you off, but don’t sweat it. They’re just insecure or distracted. Most people will want to help you out and the kind ones always will.

I

Don’t act like you’ve got it all figured out. Nobody wants to give that person extra time. Instead, be humble, self-aware, and punishingly truthful. Jesus never had a problem with people who knew their shortcomings; He didn’t tolerate rookies who pretended to have gone All-Pro and have it all figured out but were just faking it. Once we get real with where we actually are and our desperate need for God’s help, He’s got a person He can do something with, and He’ll drop the people you’ll need in your path to help. Your job is to find them.

DREAM BIG BY BO B G O FF

I love everything about flying except talking on the radio to air traffic controllers. Normally I like to talk to people, probably to a fault, but getting on the radio in the airplane to talk with a control tower has always intimidated me. They talk so fast and expect you to know what they’re saying. I might be wrong, but I think I heard a controller ordering a pizza once. I decided maybe the problem was that I’d never met a controller in a tower, so I called the local airport and made an appointment to meet one. I got to the flight control center, walked up several flights of stairs, and stepped into what looked like a movie set. There were several people sitting in front of screens. Each screen had dozens of dots representing airplanes with actual people in them. The controllers spoke infrequently to each pilot, but when they did, they didn’t try to give them all the instructions they could possibly give. Each of the controllers was in charge of just a few dots, and their goals were simple. They wanted to help each plane get to its destination and avoid hitting other ones along the way. Up in the tower, one of the controllers took me aside and said, “Bob, I know it’s hard to talk on the radio sometimes, and it can feel confusing and more than a little intimidating. Everyone feels this way sometimes. So just do this: Say who you are, where you are, and what you want. Then listen closely.” A lot of people feel the same way about talking to God or discovering their ambitions that I felt about talking to the control tower. They’re up in the air, don’t want to crash or hit someone else, and just need a little help getting to their destination. Make no mistake, identifying and pursuing your ambitions is going to take a lot of courage and clarity. It’s also going to take more than a little personal reflection. Organizing your thoughts around these three questions will help you accomplish in the future what you haven’t been able to make happen in the past. Start with acknowledging that deeper longing within you. If I had to take a guess, that’s why you’re here. You can feel it. I don’t even have to define what it is—you know exactly what I’m talking about. It is that “something more to life” rumbling around in your gut, that tug drawing you toward a scary, audacious dream. It nags you when you feel stuck at a job you once wanted but have since outgrown. It fuels the late-night conversations before college graduation. It hovers around coffee shops and kitchen tables when parents become empty nesters. It is everywhere. Boardrooms and bedrooms, subways and surf shops, galleys and galleries. It is in the passenger seat on a long road trip, uttered through quiet prayers, and found in pop song lyrics. These are all expressions of us searching for a life that matters. I believe this pursuit is a combination of finding answers to the three big questions: Who are you? Where are you? What do you want? These are some simple words, but they are actually some of the most beautiful, most difficult, and most confusing questions we can ask of ourselves. They can be a cocktail of identity, desire, purpose, rejection, life experience, struggle, fear, hope, and longing rolled into one. If we’re going to discover and realize our most beautiful and lasting ambitions—the ones that are really worth pursuing—we have to lean into these questions. MOVING ON FROM SKIN CANCER MOHS SURGERY MAKES IT HAPPEN

WHAT IS “MOHS” SURGERY? Mohs is a technique developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, in which your dermatologic surgeon will remove a skin cancer, layer by layer, and microscopically examine each section. This enables total removal of the cancer while sparing your healthy skin, reducing scarring and speeding your recovery. Mohs Surgery provides the highest cure rate for removal of skin cancer – up to 99 percent for a skin cancer that has not been treated before, and up to 94 percent for a skin cancer that has recurred after previous treatments. WHEN IS MOHS THE RIGHT TRE ATMENT ? Mohs is the gold standard of treatment for many basal cell carcinomas (BCC) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), including sensitive and critical areas around the eyes, nose, lips, ears, scalp, fingers, toes, or genitals. In these cases, removing the least tissue necessary is essential to minimize scars or limited function. We also recommend Mohs for recurring cases, or aggressive cases where BCC or

SCC are large, growing rapidly, have indistinct edges. Mohs has also been successful in treating certain cases of melanoma. WHAT HAPPENS DURING MOHS SURGERY? The surgery happens in three primary steps, all in one visit. First, the skin around the cancer will be anesthetized (numbed), and the visible skin cancer will be removed. Second, a thin layer just beyond the visible cancer will be surgically removed, processed, stained, and examined microscopically. You will have a short wait while the tissue is analyzed to confirm we have removed all the cancer. If any cancer cells do still remain, steps one and two will be repeated. In the third step, once the skin cancer is fully removed, your surgeon will recommend the best way to treat and close the wound to minimize scarring, promote healing, and speed your recovery. WILL I NEED A SKIN GRAFT? How your wound is closed will depend on the size and location of the cancerous cells. In most instances, we can repair the wound immediately after confirming the cancer is

fully removed. It may be best to leave the wound open to heal, or to close it with a few stitches. Some cases may require a reconstructive skin flap, where neighboring tissue is moved into the wound, or by a skin graft. Your Mohs surgeon may coordinate the repair with another specialist such as a plastic surgeon. WHAT CAN I E XPECT AF TER MOHS SURGERY? There is usually minimal pain for a few days after surgery, and you should limit exercise and vigorous physical activity the first couple of weeks. You can expect some swelling and bruising, and even numbness around the site for up to a year. While scarring cannot be prevented, we make it a priority to minimize it. This is a definite benefit of Mohs Surgery. W ILL I H AV E T O RE T URN FOR FOLLOW UPS? Once you have had a skin cancer, you are at a higher risk for more. So, take care of yourself by following up with your general dermatologist on a regular basis. You are worth the extra care – we want to see you healthy!

While his primary focus is skin cancer surgery and reconstruction, Ashish also enjoys general dermatology and cosmetics. He has been published in multiple medical journals involving laser therapies for scar reduction. Dr. Arshanapalli graduated at the top of his class at the Indiana University School of Medicine, then conducted his residency in Dermatology at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He completed a Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin, the birthplace of Mohs surgery.

SUNSHINE YOGA SHACK “Every day I’m inspired by the people at our studio,” she said. “Watching someone use yoga and aerial as a catalyst for change physically, mentally, and energetically gets me out of bed in the morning. It shows me we all are the same and have the same ability to change and grow to a better version of ourselves.”

“If you sincerely want to learn, I can teach you and you’ll love it!” One goal for Lynn has always been to make yoga more welcoming and inclusive of newcomers. “I vowed to make a studio where everyone feels welcome,” she said, “We are like a second home to our members. We have a beautiful studio, where all types of people come to learn and practice yoga together—with no judgement. BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

LYNN ROZAK, E-RYT 500, YACEP Twenty years ago, Lynn Rozak experienced a major life change. That change in a word? Yoga. Now, she spends her days sharing the difference yoga can make for anyone, at any age, and any fitness level. “Yoga helped me become the best version of myself,” she said. “Every day I see it improving the quality of life for those who come to my studio.”

At Sunshine Yoga Shack, every class is for everybody. Beginners learn. Experienced yogis take their practice to the next level. “Every day I’m inspired by the people at our studio,” she said. “Watching someone use yoga and aerial as a catalyst for change physically, mentally, and energetically gets me out of bed in the morning. It shows me we all are the same and have the same ability to change and grow to a better version of ourselves.” Visit SunshineYogaShack.com to find out about yoga and aerial memberships at Sunshine Yoga Shack.

Lynn’s journey began after the birth of her first son. “I needed to get in shape, tone up, and slim down,” she said. “But as a new working mother, I was exhausted. I looked into yoga because it seemed laid-back, bought a few videos, and started at home.” Lynn realized immediately she’d hit upon something different than anything else she’d tried. When her son was old enough, she began taking classes. Then a weird thing happened. Lynn found herself crying after yoga classes. “What I didn’t know then is that during yoga, the body releases emotional baggage you don’t even know you’re carrying around,” she said. “This release helps your mind clear and your body become stronger.” What really sold Lynn on the benefits of yoga was a difficult period in her life when her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and her father with heart disease. With three children under the age of four, Lynn often came to her yoga mat loaded down with exhaustion and despair. But she immerged with hope and a plan to help her parents and my family. “I’d find my breath and my scene of calm, no matter the challenge,” she said. That’s when she began her training to become a teacher. In 2012, Lynn’s husband constructed a shack in which to teach and Sunshine Yoga was born. Six years later, she introduced aerial yoga which she says feels like swimming and f lying at the same time. “Aerial is a challenge but it’s something everyone can learn,” Lynn said.

JOE HALL ROOFING, INC. “They were very patient and great at answering my questions. As the job progressed, they took photos for me and walked me through every step they were taking day by day. They’re very professional and attentive and acted as if I was the only appointment they had all day, because they took care of me so well. They choose environmentally safe materials too, which I loved.” BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

Brett Hall understands the reputation the roofing industry has suffered at the hands of a few dishonest contractors. But he’s out to change all that, beginning with client education. “Overcoming the stigma can take time and education,” he said. “I get it. Our customers’ homes are usually their largest investment and their roof is what keeps that investment safe. We want our customers to be the most informed decision makers in the market.” It’s a philosophy he inherited from his father and founder of Joe Hall Roofing. When Brett and his wife, Tina, took over in the 90s, they committed to continuing Joe’s legacy of integrity, uncompromising customer service, and quality craftmanship. “We put our customers first,” Brett said. “They control the entire process.” That commitment has resulted in lifelong customers and raving fans. Brett and Tina foster a family environment in their office and—in an industry with historically high turnover—over half of their employees have been with them ten or more years, several over 20. Joe Hall Roofing, Inc. has earned a 5-star review with the Better Business Bureau, an “A” rating with Angie’s List, and a Living Magazine “Best of” award in the roofing category. Dozens of online reviewers raved about the service customers receive before, during, and after their project. Many of

these folks called in a panic, after receiving storm damage, and were quickly reassured they’d called the right company. Here’s what one said: “They were very patient and great at answering my questions. As the job progressed, they took photos for me and walked me through every step they were taking day by day. They’re very professional and attentive and acted as if I was the only appointment they had all day, because they took care of me so well. vice, both corporately and personally, serving on numerous boards and committees of local organizations and school-related service. “Professionally, my motto is, “a reliable, reputable resource for all your roofing and contracting needs”. Personally, it’s that “experiences and friends are the currency in life”. Joe Hall Roofing, Inc. will soon welcome a third generation as Brett and Tina’s son, Jackson, graduates from college in May and joins this stellar team.

A few highlights of other reviews are, “wonderful job in only one day”, “Brett was professional from the moment he arrived and throughout the process”, and “there are few honest companies around these days, and Joe Hall Roofing is the most honest company in the DFW area.” “The staff of Joe Hall Roofing, Inc. is committed to every project we undertake,” Brett said. “Our longevity in this industry and continuous growth is a product of our commitment to our customers and our passion for the business. We enjoy what we do and go to great lengths to ensure each job is done to the best of our ability. We want to exceed our customers’ expectations.”

We use a collaborative effort with family and our nursing staff to improve patients’ health and promote and encourage independence. We place an emphasis on education of the family and the patient, making them their own best healthcare advocate.”

SAM AUSTIN AND AARON STEWART, RN Many people have been curious about the name Hygia Healthcare. “Hygia is the mythical goddess of health and wellness,” said Co-owner Sam Austin. Together with RN Aaron Stewart and their team of caregivers, Sam provide post-acute care in the homes of patients, after they leave the hospital. The business filled a gap the two men saw in the home health industry. “I began working in healthcare on the marketing side 12 years ago,” Sam said. “I quickly fell in love with the industry and what it represented. Being able to serve patients, while making relationships with the individuals who cared for them was a dream come true for me. But the longer I worked in the industry, the more frustrated I became with the number of patients we were turning away because they were ‘high acuity’. Anyone who’s drawn to caring for people knows how frustrating it is to find a population who needs your services and not being able to provide them.” Sam wasn’t involved in the decision making process though, so there wasn’t much he could do about it. That’s when he met RN Aaron Stewart who was working for another healthcare agency. “I saw the same compassion for individuals in Aaron and I knew he’d make a great partner,” Sam said. “He was the missing link. I was the marketing arm and with Aaron being an RN, we could make sure our service was impeccable and different. We came together and bought Hygia Healthcare.”

We use a collaborative effort with family and our nursing staff to improve patients’ health and promote and encourage independence. We place an emphasis on education of the family and the patient, making them their own best healthcare advocate.” Sam and Aaron have fostered a community spirit within their business environment. It was in that spirit that they recently responded to the COVID challenge by feeding law enforcement officers and first responders over 250 free meals and distributing over 500 masks. They donated masks and provided fans for workers at Mission Arlington and worked with the Blessing Project in Dallas donating almost 550 pillows to the homeless. “Our love for people is what drives us,” Sam said. “We often say, ‘Don’t treat patients. Treat people.’”

wellness | MUSTACHE MISSION

You can be reminded of how so many men try to ignore or downplay any serious health concerns by watching The Kominsky Method on Netflix. The series centers on two friends growing old, and in one episode, Michael Douglas’ character explains that he has “a touch of prostate cancer.” Minimizing health risks or engaging in outright denial doesn’t make the problem go away. And that is the inspiration behind Movember, an annual event during November that raises awareness of men’s physical and mental wellness. Just as pink signifies breast cancer awareness month in October, Movember is symbolized by men growing mustaches. From the handlebar to the walrus, Fu Manchu and pencil look, men (well, if you are old enough to shave), are encouraged to spend the month cultivating their facial hair. Movember, however, is not just a symbolic event. It is a movement that encourages men to pay attention to their health and do something about it. Us.Movember.com points out that “men’s health is in crisis and that men are dying on average six years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.” Men can survive prostate and testicular cancer if detected and treated early. That requires self-examination and a regular visit to your primary care physician. The movement emphasizes that nutrition and exercise also play a role in maintaining good health.

Of ten overlooked is ment al health. According to Us.Movember.com, a man dies every minute of every day from suicide. And that men account for 75% of suicides around the world. Depression can be as serious as any physical condition, and men have to be reminded that it is okay to talk about their feelings. Movember was started in 2003 by Australians Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, who were inspired by the fact that mustaches were no longer in fashion. So, they recruited thirty men to grow a mustache. They were so successful that a year later, they decided to make growing mustaches part of a good cause — men’s health. Today, Movember has grown into a worldwide charity with thousands of “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sisters” joining the movement. The goal is to reduce the number of men who die of prostate cancer by half and reduce the number of men who die prematurely by 25% by 2030. The movement has also partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Prevention Institute, Amazon, NBC Sports, Mastercard, and others to implement a hair-raising venture to make men live longer and healthier lives. It’s Contagious Altruism breeds altruism, causing a chain reaction of kind acts. One study found that people are more likely to perform generous deeds after observing another do so, rippling throughout the community and inspiring dozens to make a difference in someone else’s lives. A Happier You One sociolog y exper iment track ing 2,000 people over five years found that Americans who described themselves as “very happy” were those who volunteered at least five hours per month. Researchers also think that giving to others might give you a mental boost by providing you with a neurochemical sense of reward and enhancing your overall feeling of purpose and identity. Lower Blood Pressure and Reduced Pain According to one study, people who suffered from chronic pain and started working as peer volunteers experienced a reduction in their symptoms. Another study showed that older individuals who volunteered at least 200 hours a year decreased their hypertension risk by a whopping 40%. And a study by the Mayo Clinic found that kind acts and a spirit of gratitude reduce stress, which lowers blood pressure. While grand gestures are great, even small acts of kindness can improve your health.

BENEFITS OF

Benevolence HOW KIND ACTS CAN IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH BY MIMI GRE E N WOOD KN IGHT

• Let another shopper in line in front of you in the grocery store. • Write a thank-you note to someone who offered kindness to you. • Give sincere compliments. • Hold the door. • Donate time and/or finances to a worthy cause, such as your local food bank. • If you’re medically able, donate blood or platelets. • Bring your neighbor’s trash cans up from the curb. • Pick up a piece of litter.

eing kind and helping others doesn’t just make the world better — it makes you better. Scientific studies have shown that the very act of giving of yourself to others releases a neurochemical boost or “helper’s high” that can enhance your happiness, health, and sense of wellbeing.

• Set out bird feeders and keep them full.

Longer Life Research has shown that performing kind acts can improve your ability to manage stress, stave off disease, reduce depression rates, increase a sense of life satisfaction, alleviate loneliness, and enhance your social life. All factors that can significantly affect your long-term health.

aesthetics | PRESENTS THAT PAMPER

hen planning your holiday gift-giving, think outside the wrapped box and give the gift of pampering. Chances are, most of the people on your buying list don’t need more things. A thoughtful gift makes the recipient feel loved and appreciated, so consider giving aesthetic services as they are as practical as they are luxurious.

W

Facials If someone on your list is always putting others first, treat that person to a facial that is as refreshing for the spirit as it is for the skin. A facial can help the recipient unwind after prepping for the holidays or achieve a glamorous glow to ring in the New Year. Massage Life is stressful, but giving and receiving shouldn’t be. Give the gift of a brightened mood. Massage releases endorphins that produce feelings of well-being. It also relieves muscle tension, improves circulation, reduces depression, and improves sleep quality. Spray Tan If you would love to treat someone to a dream vacation to a tropical island, but your bank account balks at the idea, you can still give the gift of a sunny glow. A spray tan can provide the recipient with a mental pick-me-up during the grey days of winter. Spray tans are an easy, inexpensive way to give the sun-lover on your list the illusion of a flawless sun-kissed tan without the harmful rays. Gifts to Give Yourself (and Others) While some people on your list would likely love to indulge in certain procedures, many gift givers are cautious about giving aesthetic service gifts such as Botox, microdermabrasion, and laser hair removal. No one wants to be the person who says, “Happy Holidays! Go do something about your unwanted facial hair.” If you have had candid conversations with a close friend or family member and know the gift will be well received, then there is nothing wrong with giving a more personal procedure.

Would you love to be on the receiving end of one of these gifts? It could be possible that your significant other is afraid of offending you. If dropping hints hasn’t worked in the past, take matters into your own hands by giving yourself some pre-holiday pampering. Can’t Decide? If you aren’t sure which aesthetic service someone might enjoy, remember that most medspas and salons offer gift card options. Most of the time, this option even allows the recipient to purchase professional skincare products.

Technological advancements usher in new innovations and make the once impossible possible. But these advancements aren’t always about developing new procedures. Often, they result in improving approaches to the old ones. Here’s the scoop on the latest tech in cosmetic procedures: Nonsurgical Nose Job. Until recently, all rhinoplasty procedures required surgery. This innovation is one of the most exciting developments in recent years. It’s minimally invasive, gives instant results, and with little downtime. The plastic surgeon injects

Endoscopic Facelift. With endoscopic facelifts, the surgeon creates small 4mm-5mm incisions above and behind the ear. These incisions allow the surgeon to use an endoscope to complete each required piece of the facelift. Unlike traditional facelifts, there’s minimal to no noticeable scarring, minimal risk of complications, such as permanent facial numbing, and allows the surgeon to customize the procedure to address your specific needs and concerns. SmartLipo Liposuction. SmartLipo provides a safer, minimally invasive technique for removing unwanted pockets of fat. Traditional liposuction removes fat in its solid form using a larger cannula. With SmartLipo, the physician uses specialized laser technology to melt fat away and remove it in liquid form with a tiny cannula, which means there’s no scarring. This procedure results in much lower levels of trauma to the body, and recovery time is much faster. Another benefit is that the lasers used help tighten the skin tissue in the treated areas. Injectable Cellulite Treatment. It’s estimated that 85% of women have cellulite, which gives the skin an orange-peel look. The FDA recently approved a new in-office option for getting rid of stubborn cellulite. Endo Aesthetics produces this new product — brand name Qwo — which is the first and only injectable treatment for moderate-to-severe cellulite in the buttocks area. Qwo releases the fibrous bands that cause cellulite by enzymatically targeting the specific type of collagen that creates cellulite’s appearance. In addition to these options, several others are currently in clinical trials. These high-tech options have the potential to transform every aspect of your life — not just the visible ones.

MEL BEAN Mary Patton OF MARY PATTON DESIGN It is extremely important to consider how the space is going to be used. For instance, will it be used for dining, lounging, or both? You should also consider the climate and if the area is covered or not. Proportion and function are two essentials to consider for a welldesigned outdoor area. Treat your outdoor space as an extension of your house. It’s nice to keep the overall look consistent, but you can also go more neutral or add more color depending on the style of your home. I love the brand loll for outdoor furniture. They offer various colors and are so comfortable, even without cushions, which can get soggy and faded. During the fall and winter months, I like to incorporate creams and whites. The color feels cozy without being too heavy. For outdoor lounge seating, I would add some cream throw blankets and candles that can be used inside as well. I love creating tablescapes with natural elements too. Incorporating rustic branch bundles in centerpieces looks pretty, and it is a great way to set the tone for a fall table.

STRUXURE

The fall and winter in Texas are very mild, and actually, a time you can entertain and enjoy being outside. Adding lanterns with candles also creates a cozy festive fall vibe.

Mel Bean OF MEL BEAN INTERIORS First and foremost, consider the setting and elements when designing an outdoor living space. A cozy patio surrounded by woods requires a vastly different approach than an ocean-view veranda. Natural light and sun protection can make the most significant difference to the enjoyment of the space. The best outdoor spaces provide cozy lounging areas for both day and night and fire for chilly evenings. A dining space, preferably with an outdoor kitchen nearby, can maximize your time outdoors. As much as I’d love to avoid another screen, a television or projector can lure us out for movies or watch the game. Whether a pool or a fountain, a water feature can provide white noise and an element that appeals to most of us. Start with Pinterest. Take into account the style of your home, the surrounding elements, and use inspiration images to narrow your focus. You will find a pattern in what most appeals to you. Think about your wish list, do you plan for a pool, hot tub? Is a large covered space with living and dining

more suitable or an uncovered seating group surrounding a firepit? A play area for the kids or a patch of grass for the dogs? The options are nearly endless, even for a small space, so be sure of your goals! LeeAnn Baker OF LEEANN BAKER INTERIORS In reality, designing for the exterior is no different than designing for an interior. You still want pieces that fit the way you will use them, chairs at the right height for dining or conversation, and other more comfortable ones for lounging. The big difference that comes into play is durability for weather conditions. For the outdoors, I tend to think more about the flexibility of pieces, as my clients are more likely to move furniture around for outdoor parties and functions than they are with their interiors. I use more sectional sofas and pieces that can be positioned in numerous arrangements. Likewise, I use lounge chairs with ottomans rather than chaise lounges, as the ottomans can be used as additional seating when you are trying to seat extra people. In our area, we have long summers and short winters, and most of my clients love to add heated patios and covered spaces that we can use year-round. It is important to consider lighting, whether it be an overhead lantern or sconces, or electrical outlets placed about with switches so that you can illuminate the space just perfectly throughout the event. I like to put outdoor switches on dimmers so that you can soften the light depending on your entertainment needs. My favorite outdoor spaces have a water feature (like a fountain or pond, if not on the lake or ocean) as well as fire. I love a seated area around a fire pit, which provides heat as well as visual interest. Scott Selzer/CEO OF STRUXURE Site, function, and budget are important factors to consider when designing an outdoor space: What can my property accommodate? What kind of space do I want or need? How much money am I willing to spend? However, it’s also essential to think about outdoor upgrades in terms of return on investment. How can I create a space that can be used year-round? Will the enhancements increase my property value? The answers to all of these questions will help inform choices well beyond furniture selection, like adding fixed structures, water features, or built-in appliances. Even the most well-curated outdoor lounge or kitchen will remain underutilized unless it can be protected from rain, sun, and extreme temperatures. StruXure pergolas offer protection and durability. The motorized pivoting louvers, which can be shifted at the touch of a button to let the warm sunshine through or optimize shade, can be fully closed on rainy days. Treat your outdoor space as new-found square footage and look for ways to maximize the value of that space. As outdoor living continues to rise in popularity, statistics show that homes with comfortable outdoor spaces are increasingly attractive to buyers.

GIVE SOME LOVE TO YOUR HOME’S MOST PROMINENT FEATURE BY CHE RY L AL E XAN DE R

If the existing entry door on your house doesn’t have any of the problems listed above, you may want to refinish it instead, which can be a lot less work than replacing the entire door unit. Here are some easy ways to open the door to a fresh look: Embellish it If every door on your block is brown or gray, a simple coat of bright paint will make your home stand out. You could also hang a wreath, add a dramatic house number, install some long shutters on either side or add a specialty door knocker. Even a new doormat and some planters placed on either side with beautiful foliage will elevate your entry. Add lights

U

pgrading your front door is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to give your home an instant facelift, enhance the decor of your home, add curb appeal, and improve energy efficiency.

However, before heading out to your home improvement store, take some time to consider all the options available. Don’t buy on a whim. Your front door may need replacing if:

Lights at your front door will boost your curb appeal. If you already have lights, consider replacing them as an update. Sconces are available in a variety of designs, from traditional to modern, and you can easily find thousands online. On a front porch, a hanging fixture will cast a welcoming pool of light. And to add a bit of drama, spotlights at ground level aimed at the door will put your entry at center stage. Dress up your entry with new trim

• The wood is deteriorating or rotting. • The door joints are loose. • The exterior side of the door will not hold a finish. • The threshold and weather stripping are not providing a good seal. • The door has uninsulated, single pane glass. • A different style or design of door is desired.

Replacing your front door trim with decorative moldings is an easy way to upgrade. In addition to wood, these are also available in PVC trims that look identical to their wooden counterparts.

If you determine that now is the time for an update, do not think only about swapping one door out for another — although that change could increase the appeal of your entrance. But also, look at enlarging the entryway by installing a door with windows to either side or

While style and budget are obvious considerations, any improvement you can make to your home’s most prominent feature is worth the investment. Your front door sets the first and last impression. Make it a great one.

There are legends and lore in every family, and I came to know ours through time at the dinner table and campfire circles, hours wiled away deep in conversation. When a moment in life lent itself, my mother never missed an opportunity to pass down wisdom, injecting a “Once upon a time, your Aunt Mildred…” story, which became more

commonplace as my sisters and I grew older. Life lessons, left turns, large moments. Though great aunts and grandparents were long gone, their shared experiences no less still managed to inform my life. There was always a comforting or cautionary tale offered, and I have subsequently developed a profound sense of connection to those that went before me. I searched for all the tangible bits and pieces remaining that I might use to round-out what was delivered via oral tradition. I found both gifts and signposts left in my greatgrandmother’s journals from the early 1900s. I found heartbreak in my grandmother’s THERE WAS ALWAYS A journals and letters, and I found courage, COMFORTING OR CAUTIONARY survival, and love in my TALE OFFERED, AND I HAVE mother’s. I discovered SUBSEQUENTLY DEVELOPED court documents and A PROFOUND SENSE OF found family Bibles CONNECTION TO THOSE THAT hand-scrawled with births, deaths, weddings, WENT BEFORE ME. funerals, and service records. Siphoning through my ancestors’ evidence was an unwitting study where I came to recognize myself more clearly, see my sisters, and understand my parents more deeply. All are satisfying side effects of coming to know my roots, for all roads that led here to illuminate. In many ways, the preservation of family stories has served as a roadmap of sorts, and if nothing else, the awareness of a larger history that I belong to. Author Sue Monk Kidd said, “Stories have to be told, or they die, and when they die, we can’t remember who we are or why we’re here.” Our lives are comprised of an ever-growing collection of stories that we experience, that others tell us and that we tell ourselves. In essence, storytelling is life. No matter what your story is, it is valuable and worth sharing. No matter how you share it, around the dinner table or firepit, by journaling, or even in today’s world, a simple social media post — all of these add up to way-markers for those that will come after us. These stories ground us in our roots, inspire us in our now, and at the end of it all — our stories are the legacies we leave.

Storytelling Traditions Storytelling is our original and oldest form of communication. Since the dawn of humankind, stories were communicated with hieroglyphs, formations, carvings, and symbols. Across every culture, storytelling transcends time and space with oral tradition, the written word, art, dance, ceremonies, poetry, and song. Not a single human is without their own unique story, and it is the common thread that runs throughout the arc of every story that moves us forward, connects us all, gives us perspective, and teaches us. Storytelling remains our most critical tool and serves still as the record-keeping of our individual and shared histories. In the present day, storytelling has become more visual with the advent and prevalence of social media. Facebook and Instagram provide platforms to share the content of our lives with photographic support in posts that can be engaged with, looked back on, saved in our “memories.” These platforms furthered our ability to share real-time life with live-feeds and actual “Stories” features, where users employ snippets of video, pictures, with blurbs or paragraphs to tell our tales to large audiences all at once, and to all corners of the globe. The digital age has, in many ways, transformed storytelling, with more access to a never-ending sea of information. However, these stories’ ability to endure the same as all prior storytelling methods is subjective and largely dependent on how technology continues to evolve. It is a good reminder to make sure to otherwise retain our stories, to preserve our legacies and the evidence of our lives, for whosoever comes after us.

From convenient gadgets to DIY travel books and handy items that make packing a snap, we’ve put together a list of gifts for the adventurers in your life, perfect for the holiday season or any time.

PORTABLE UV LIGHT SANITIZER WAND Call it a sign of the times, but a handheld UV wand small enough to slip into a handbag or a pocket, such as Mobile Klean, is an ideal gift for travelers. Fast and easy to use, the UV light kills germs, viruses, and other contaminants, perfect for disinfecting airline trays, door handles, toilet seats, and other surfaces. Available at MobileKlean.com. BOOKS - Available online through retailers like Uncommon Goods and REI, She Explores is a coffee table book of photographs and the stories that go with them. PORTABLE CHARGER Most of us travel with electronics, including smartphones, tablets, and cameras, all of which need to be charged. SCRATCH TRAVEL MAPS – Many of us have bucket lists that include not only specific destinations but countries and states. A fun way to keep track is a scratch-off map like the Scratch Map Deluxe from UncommonGoods.com, starting at $32. It’s also a great way to teach kids about where they’re going and geography. GIFT CARD FOR AN ONLINE PHOTO BOOK MAKER We might share a few travel photos on Instagram and Facebook, but what about all the images stored in your cell phone or transferred to your computer? COMPRESSION SOCKS Several things help combat swollen feet while flying on a plane or sitting in a car for hours, such as keeping legs uncrossed and walking around when possible. DIRECTIONS: ADD CHICKEN TENDERS and chicken stock to a small soup pot. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover and let cook all the way through, about 10 minutes. Check to ensure chicken is properly AFTER IT cooked. If it is not, continue to cook until it is done. IS COOKED, remove the chicken from the broth. Pour broth into a bowl and set aside. Shred the chicken and set aside. WIPE OUT THE POT YOU USED, add olive oil, and heat on medium-high. Add the diced onion to the pan and cook until softened, about 4 minutes. Sprinkle the garlic and oregano on top of onions and sauté for 30 seconds. ADD THE GREEN CHILES, beans, salt, and pepper. POUR THE RESERVED CHICKEN BROTH and chicken back into the pan and bring to a gentle simmer. JUST BEFORE SERVING, turn off the heat and stir in the ½ cup of sour cream. Divide the soup between two bowls and garnish with sour cream, tortilla strips, shredded cheese, cilantro, etc. TIPS & TRICKS: Oftentimes, chili recipes yield too much volume for a small family. This recipe is perfect when cooking for one or two people. It is easily frozen and will last in the freezer for up to 2 months.
