letter from the publisher

publishing PUBLISHER Misty Daniels EDITOR Heather Witherspoon

“Let us test and examine our ways and return to the Lord.”

Lamentations 3:40

The theme of this month’s edition is “Examine”. What a great way to start this new year! Through the Old and New Testament, God calls believers to examine ourselves to see whether we’re living in the faith, if we are doers of the word-not hearers only, are we remembering all God’s brought us through. Each year, January presents us with a reset. Whatever last year looked like (and for many of us it was challenging) this year is a brand new start.

The seasons of the year are actually a great parallel to our walk with God. If you’re one of those people who finds winter dreary with its bare trees and sparse lawns, keep in mind what’s happening just under the surface. The trees are quietly preparing for their new spring leaves. The lawn lies ready to burst forth lush and green again because our God planned it that way. It’s the perfect picture of the great things He has planned for each of us in 2021. His mercies are new every morning (Lamentation 3:22-23), He’ll complete His good work in us (Philippians 1:6), and His plan is to prosper us and give us hope (Jeremiah 29:11). What a great way to start this new year.

Hello, 2021! Things are looking up in The American Dream City. Hope you all enjoyed a bountiful holiday season. Yes, it looked different for many of us without the ability to travel and gather the way we’re used to doing. But there’s a light and the end of the tunnel and I couldn’t be prouder of the way this city has risen to the many challenges of the COVID pandemic. You showed concern for each other and innovation in keeping life moving while keeping your family and Arlington neighbors safe. A special “thank you” goes out to all our medical workers, educators, and first responders. You’re the real heroes of 2020 and we’ll never forget the way you met this unprecedented challenge with grace and determination. I also want to say a special thanks to Dr. Victoria Farrar-Myers! The Arlington City Council representative has been honored with the Tarrant

GRA ND PRAI RI E to Beltline (FM 1382) from the existing two-lane asphalt road to a four-lane concrete road. •Implement new highway safety apparatus on fire engines and trucks for enhanced roadway safety. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and vision, Dr. Farrar-Myers. It’s people like you who make Arlington such a great place to live, work, play, and worship.

The Dutch people are some of the happiest in the world. Their secret? They are masters of niksen, or the art of doing nothing. Niksen is not a form of meditation, nor is it a state of laziness or boredom. It’s not scrolling through social media or wondering what you’re going to cook for dinner. Rather, to niks is to make a conscious choice to sit back, let go, and do nothing at all. With this book, learn how to do nothing in the most important areas of your life, such as: At Home: Find a comfy nook and sit. No technology or other distractions. At Work: Stare at your computer. Take in the view from your office. Close your eyes. In Public: Forget waiting for the bus, enjoy some relaxing niksen time. Backed with advice from the world’s leading experts on happiness and productivity, this book examines the underlying science behind niksen and how doing less can often yield so much more. Perfect for anyone who feels overwhelmed, burnt out, or exhausted, NIKSEN does not tell you to work harder. Instead, it shows you how to take a break from all the busyness while giving you sincere, heartfelt permission to do nothing.

R

IGHT NOW MORE THAN EVER, WE CAN ALL U SE S OME H A PPY NE W S. Well, what could

be happier than kids receiving Christmas bicycles. Since 2007, Mission A rling ton has put smiles on kids’ faces—and subsequently their parents’—with the Bikes for Mission Arlington program. 2020 was no exception. And it wasn’t just bikes eliciting squeals of joy from area kids. Thanks to the support of the local corporations, churches, individuals, and families, Mission Arlington was once again able to invite thousands of families to “shop” for Christmas gifts at no charge, including toys, bikes, and bike helmets. For many of the recipients, this may be the only gift they received for Christmas. The annual program started13 years ago with two local dads and their kids, putting “faith into works” (James 2:17) and donating six bikes to Mission Arlington for kids in need. Since then, Bikes for Mission Arlington has distributed over 12,000 bicycles and other Christmas toys to area kids. And everyone who received a gift also heard the good news of the gospel message. “A bike represents an element of freedom, but for some families, it represents the ability to make it to school or work,” said Bikes for Mission Arlington Board Member Tommy Saxon. “It’s a mode of transportation that could change the path of a child—or an entire family.” To help in social distancing efforts, this year there was even a “donate from home” option through the Mission Arlington website. And once again, the Arlington community stepped up and made Christmas dreams come true for many local kids and their families. Thank you all!

As founder of Diet Solutions Weight Loss Center, Jennifer helps men and women begin a new life with excess weight removed from the equation. Hers is a true American success story. Even as a girl, Jennifer knew she wanted to be her own boss. “The only person I truly want to work for is myself,” she said. It took years of hard work and perseverance. “Starting your own business comes with many obstacles. At times, you can feel defeated. But it’s worth it all. At Diet Solutions Weight Loss Center, you’ll receive weekly energy and vitamin injections, individualized counseling, and FDA-approved medications. What you won’t get is bland prepackaged foods, bars, or shakes. Dining out at your favorite restaurant is even part of your success plan.

"In 2008, I quit smoking and started gaining weight. I went from a size 6 to a size 14. I tried walking and Zumba but couldn’t lose a single pound. I’d given up and accepted I’d always be overweight. Then I watched my sister-in-law lose over 40 pounds with Diet Solutions. I had to give it a try. The plan is so easy to follow. I’m eating better food and more food but still losing weight. I never thought it was possible to get back down to a size six, but here I am back in my skinny jeans!”

didn’t know how. I felt like I had messed up my life, so my life could not make a difference. I felt like I had probably taken a turn down the wrong road at some point, which meant I would never be able to arrive at the right destination. I had an overwhelming desire to make an impact. But that desire had become a burden of guilt because I felt I would never be able to do it. I find that the story of our lives is very, very similar. We may fill in the blanks differently, but essentially, our storyline is the same. Refer to the illustrations as I explain.

myself that I could change. So, I took away the frustration of failing at goals by simply not setting any at all. I would just have to leave goals for successful people that haven’t messed up their life like I had. My ultimate life goal would be to make a difference, but I felt that had passed me by. Within all of us is a longing to live a life that is significant, not for personal notoriety, but for impacting the lives of others. Life can feel like a baseball game. We anticipate that there is something coming up to look forward to. We all want to have something inside us that moves us every day to be that superhero or princess. We want our life to be staged for impact. The thought of this kind of life moves us.

The lie is that my life was forever derailed by that bad thing that happened. But what if that was never the problem? What if there is a step that I can take that will enable me to get my life back? What if it isn’t too late for me to get my life back? What if I could get back on the path of purpose? What I found in my life is this: When I honestly faced the worst of my life, I became exposed to God’s best for my life. It exposed me to redemption. It exposed me to the simple steps that I could take to live the life of purpose that I was desperate for. The life I was designed for. My story was that I turned to food to cope with the burden of unfulfilled purpose.

One step. Just one. It was like tipping over one domino. I didn’t know behind that domino were 100 more that quickly fell. Long story short, here is what became of me. Because I found freedom, I lost 60 pounds. But that is the small part of the story. The big part was that I found my life of purpose. I found it clearly, and I was set free to pursue it boldly! I experienced with my own life something that I want others to experience. Our life’s greatest pain/failure is an ugly set up for our life’s greatest triumph. As you read this article, I hope that you can personalize this message. My friend, your life has a great purpose. You can know it clearly, and you can be set free to pursue it boldly!

FIRST THINGS FIRST Empty your pantry of everything. Yes, everything. Get rid of things you will never use, including stale and out-ofdate items. While the cupboard is bare, go in for the deep clean. If you're going for a designer look , now is your chance to paint the walls and shelves. GET IN THE ZONE While everything is out of the pantry, take a moment to consider your needs. Mentally divide the space into different sections. Some possible sections might be: • Baking goods • Breakfast foods • Condiments • Canned goods • Snack foods

The greatest benefit of decanting dry goods is it prevents mice and other pests from getting into your food. A TISKET A TASKET, STORE SOME THINGS IN BASKETS Baskets and bins are perfect for deep shelves. Items like potatoes can be stored in large baskets under the bottom shelf to utilize floor space. AN ORTHODONTIST

BY D AV I D B U I C E

In addition to your general dentist, ask friends and colleagues at work for their recommendations.

TREATMENT BY AN ORTHODONTIST IS NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS. While the majority of those seeking the services of an orthodontist is still young people, close to 30% of all orthodontics patients are adults. Whatever your age, an orthodontist can help you in many ways. An orthodontics specialist can protect your bite, maximize your teeth’s effectiveness in performing their functions, and create a well-aligned smile, a huge confidence booster. Today’s treatments involve repositioning of the teeth and underlying roots, providing better support for the crown of the tooth. Finally, well-aligned teeth make oral hygiene easier to maintain.

Finding a qualified orthodontist used to be a fairly easy thing to do. Your general dentist, who was probably the one who recommended realignment, simply gave you a referral. Today, however, with a greater variety of straightening procedures and with an increasing number of non-specialists offering orthodontic treatments, the choice can be more difficult. In your search for the right orthodontist, your general dentist’s recommendation is still valuable. General dentists often work with orthodontists in coordinating patient care, and in their own practice, often see the results of realignment procedures and can pass their recommendations on to you. Ask them if their children had braces, and if so, which orthodontist they used.

Before setting an appointment, go to their website and check to make sure the orthodontist is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, an organization that maintains very strict ethical and training standards. Members of this organization have not only graduated from dental school but have gone through an additional residency program lasting two to three years in which they have received specialized training in orthodontics. In contrast, a general dentist offering orthodontics procedures may have only attended a few training seminars. While you’re online, you might also check out reviews left by their previous patients. Another consideration is the technology available in the orthodontist’s office. The more progressive and up to date an office is, the more likely that the orthodontist is taking the time and money to upgrade and keep his or her practice at the forefront of modern orthodontics. It’s also important to make sure they are using the latest technology in braces. The days of the old “railroad braces” are gone, and newer, smaller metal or ceramic braces mean better treatment outcomes and less time in the orthodontist’s office. Finally, and very importantly, is the charge for services. Most orthodontists will offer a comprehensive fee covering all their treatment services as well as a monthly payment plan that fits your budget. But before signing any paperwork, make sure there are no hidden fees at the end of treatment for things like retainers or X-rays. In the end, the investment in orthodontic treatment will be well worth it, as repeated studies have shown the benefits in both self-esteem and job opportunities that come with a great smile.

How long should I expect to be in the hospital following my surgery? What should I expect as far as recovery time, and what limitations should I be prepared for during recovery? IF YOU’VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE, LUNG CANCER, OR ESOPHAGEAL CANCER, YOU’RE PROBABLY FEELING OVERWHELMED RIGHT NOW. Take a deep breath. The next step is to find the right cardiothoracic surgeon to partner with your cardiologist, oncologist, or pulmonologist and coordinate your care. A cardiothoracic surgeon specializes in surgical procedures of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Choosing the best one for you and your family can make a critical difference in your overall health and recovery.

They should take the time to thoroughly answer your questions and ask enough questions to understand your unique condition. The right surgeon will not only provide clear solutions for your medical problem but will explain those solutions in a language you understand and will make sure you’re comfortable with your choices regarding surgery. You should also feel comfortable with his staff. If you have a preference as far as the hospital, make sure any potential surgeon holds privileges there. Look for a surgeon who treats you like an individual and makes you feel at ease, one with the expertise, experience, and empathy you want, who thoroughly explains your options, outcomes, and recovery period. If you’re having trouble deciding between qualified candidates, let your referring doctor be the tiebreaker. As you ponder the prospect of major surgery, it’s comforting to know you’re in the most experienced hands possible and that the surgeon genuinely cares about you and your health. A PLASTIC SURGEON

HAS BREASTFEEDING AND CHILDBIRTH RANSACKED YOUR BODY, LEAVING BEHIND CREPE PAPER SKIN, SAGGING AND DEFLATED BREASTS, AND A PERMANENT POOCH THAT NO AMOUNT OF DIET AND EXERCISE CAN FIX? Do you have a flat derriere and long for a curvy one — but find squats aren’t doing the trick? Does the way your nose hook a little to the side make you feel super self-conscious? A qualified plastic surgeon can fix these things and more. Finding the right one may take some time, but it’s the first and most important step toward achieving the look you’ve always wanted.

Regardless of the procedure you’re looking at — you need to look for a qualified surgeon first. Plastic surgeons can perform various procedures, including mommy makeovers, nose jobs, liposuction, body contouring, butt lifts, tummy tucks, facelifts, or any number of other cosmetic procedures. Still, you have to find a qualified surgeon. One big question to ask: Is the physician board certified? Let’s clarify. There’s one organization that stands out for plastic surgeons, the American Board of Plastic Surgery. A second place to check is with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Board certification means several things. It means the physician must graduate from an accredited medical school, complete at least six years of additional training as a

resident surgeon in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The residency training must cover all areas of surgery, including at least three years devoted entirely to plastic surgery. Plus, board certified plastic surgeons must pass comprehensive oral and written exams, undergo continuing education, and recertify every ten years. Next, check the surgeon’s body of work. Is it exemplary? Examine patient before and after photos. Make sure the after photos are several months post-surgery, as most results aren’t fully realized for 6 to 12 months. Make sure you like the physician’s style and results. Also, look for photos of patients with similar features as you so you can get a real feel for what your results might be. Experience is a must. If you want a facelift, you need to find a doctor who does them at least once or twice a week instead of a couple a year — the more experienced, the better. It is essential to understand that every person is different, and every doctor’s sense of style and artistry is different. So, results won’t be exactly the same for everyone. This is where communication and realistic expectations come into play. You could find the most qualified physician out there, but when you meet them, it’s possible that you won’t click at all. Don’t stop looking until you find a physician you feel comfortable with, one who will take the time to explain everything and offer their insight. They should answer every question no matter how silly you think it is. Plastic surgery is not a light decision, so taking the time to find the right doctor is imperative.

A COSMETIC DENTIST

BY M I M I G R E E N W O O D K N I G H T

MAKE NO MISTAKE, COSMETIC DENTISTRY IS AN ART FORM. If you are in need of a smile makeover, then you want a master artist who can create the most perfect, natural-looking smile that fits you. Just because someone says they are a cosmetic dentist doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. Do your due diligence to find a true artisan who is experienced and has undergone the necessary training to be an expert in their field. It’s your smile. Don’t settle. If you take the time now, you’ll have something to smile about for years to come!

Cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving your smile’s aesthetic appeal, which means things like veneers, implants, teeth alignment, and your gum line. “If you don’t have the smile you desire, you may benefit from dental implants, crowns, or porcelain veneers. Contact a cosmetic dentist who has years of experience and a gallery of before and afters photos so you can see for yourself what a difference a smile can make.”

Because cosmetic dentistry is not a specialty recognized by the American Dental Association, any dentist who performs cosmetic dental procedures can be referred to as a cosmetic dentist. But that’s not to say cosmetic dentists aren’t skilled — far from it. When looking for a qualified practitioner, you might start with accredited members of the American Academy

Dr. John Bauer MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY

of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Dentists with accreditation are at least guaranteed to be professionals who have gone the extra mile (or three) in training and education to become a master of the craft.

When narrowing your search, consider doing a consultation with your top two or three picks and ask all the questions you want. Ask about their education and experience. Ask how often they perform smile makeovers (you want someone who does them all the time). Ask how they will guarantee their work is what you asked for. A great cosmetic dentist will take the time to answer questions, educate you, and make you feel comfortable. Even though accreditations are a sign of dedication, they don’t make a dentist great — experience and artistry do. So, it is imperative that you look at their before and after portfolio of real patients. Be critical when looking at the images. Look closely at the teeth. Do they look natural, realistic, and aesthetically pleasing? Ask to see photos of someone with similar issues as yours to see how that person’s smile turned out. Be skeptical of cosmetic dentists who don’t have before and after photos. Before you go to your first appointment, make a wish list of everything you want to happen for your smile makeover. Gather photos of smiles you like so you can show them to the dentist for reference. However, keep in mind that you are unique — and someone else’s smile might not work for your mouth. “You are never fully dressed without a smile,” as the common adage goes. Finding a qualified cosmetic dentist, you can trust is just the first step to getting fully dressed. If you’re willing to invest in yourself, your confidence, and those “pearly whites,” take the time upfront to find the right expert for you and enjoy the satisfaction of a confident smile — the feeling is tough to match.x

YOU’LL WANT TO CHOOSE THE BEST LAW YER FOR YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS. There are plenty of good attorneys out there — but many of them specialize in a very specific area of law. What kind of lawyer do you need? And how do you choose the right one? The nature of your legal problem will help to determine what kind of lawyer you need. Most attorneys concentrate their practices in a few legal specialties like family law, criminal law, employment law, personal injury law, bankruptcy, or civil litigation.

You’ll want to conduct your own thorough research before making a decision. Start by securing referrals from family and “In these very difficult times, everyone has learned that a healthy and loving family is so very important. That said, I am committed to providing my clients with the most expeditious and affordable resolutions of the issues brought about by the stress of Covid-19 that they are having that’s a result of the COVID-19 crisis. friends — make sure these referrals are for attorneys in the appropriate practice area. Carefully research each candidate. Check with your local bar association. Most county and civic bar associations offer lawyer referral services to the public — but take these recommendations with a grain of salt, as the bar association might not screen for qualifications. The American Bar Association also offers a searchable database for consumers seeking legal counsel. You can also ask other lawyers for referrals. The legal community tends to be small enough that even when that friend or family member can’t help you personally, they can almost always point you in the direction of someone

who can. Lawyers tend to be aware of other lawyers’ reputations in a particular practice area and can hopefully help steer you towards someone who is both knowledgeable and reputable. Keep in mind, many lawyers receive a referral fee when they refer out a case, and this may or may not influence their decision when referring out your specific case.

Once you’ve narrowed down the field of contenders, you should interview the attorneys to see who the best fit for your specific needs and legal issues will be. Most attorneys will provide an initial consultation (usually an hour or less) at no charge. (The process can differ from firm to firm and depends on their current caseload and priorities.) Ask the attorney you meet with about your specific area of need and what percentage of their caseload is dedicated to your type of legal matter? How long has he or she been in practice, and what is their rate of success? Do they have any special skills or certifications? What are the fees and how are they structured? Do they carry malpractice insurance? Will anyone else be working on your case, and what are their rates? How will you be billed? How will they inform you of developments in your case? Is the attorney someone you would feel comfortable working with — and are you confident they possess the skills and necessary experience to handle your case? Look into any disciplinary actions against potential candidates. Keep in mind that more expensive does not necessarily mean lawyer “X” is any more or less qualified than lawyer “Y.” You have to do your research, and then follow your intuition

when trying to find a health care provider that’s right for you. Like other doctors, podiatrists have their areas of specialty, and before making a choice, it’s good to know what specific kind of treatment you need. Sports podiatry concentrates on sports-related injuries and implementing a plan of action to get you “back in the game.” Bio-mechanical podiatry specializes in knowing exactly which way the foot should move in everyday life. Surgical podiatrists focus on fixing foot problems through surgery, and they are usually the last resort. Whatever your foot problem, it’s crucial to choose a podiatrist who best fits the issues you are having. A PODIATRIST IS A DOCTOR OF PODIATRIC MEDICINE (DPM), ALSO KNOWN AS A PODIATRIC PHYSICIAN OR SURGEON. Podiatrists complete four years of training in a podiatric medical school, followed by three years of hospital residency training similar to that of other doctors. Podiatrists are qualified to diagnose and treat conditions of the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. The specific services offered include treatment of heel pain, flat feet, sports injuries, diabetic-related foot care, reconstructive foot, and ankle surgery, and providing customized orthotics. Frankly, when your feet are really hurting, there’s no substitute for the care they provide.

It’s no exaggeration to say that when your feet hurt, your entire body hurts, and during those times, it’s a good idea to seek out the services of a podiatrist, a doctor of podiatric medicine “Our feet can directly affect our overall health and lead to serious problems. If you are experiencing foot or ankle pain, contact a podiatrist who is dedicated to treating the root cause of your problems - not just the symptoms.”

First, ask for the advice of your primary care physician. Most have a circle of doctors they know and are connected with, and asking for their advice is an excellent way to start. Beyond your doctor, ask around among family members, friends, and colleagues at work. There’s nothing like first-hand information

You can also look for patient reviews on the internet, but you should be careful. Sometimes patients only leave reviews when they are dissatisfied with their treatment, which can skew the search results. So, use online reviews with caution. Additionally, websites like FootHealthFacts.org and the American Podiatric Medical Association can help you locate recommended podiatrists in your area. Look for the letters FACFAS, which stand for Fellow, American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons. Those letters mean that a physician has completed years of rigorous foot and ankle training in podiatric medical school, a hospital-based residency program, and a board certification exam, making them uniquely qualified to take care of this part of your body. Finally, at your first appointment, consider the physician’s style and bedside manner, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most doctors are happy to answer any questions, and if the doctor becomes upset with your questions, they’re probably not the physician for you. Medicine works best when the physician educates their patients to make the right decisions. This helps reduce reoccurrences and allows for quicker recovery. Finding the right podiatrist can be an involved process, and it’s important to find one who’s qualified and willing to answer your questions. Don’t settle for less. Find a podiatrist you can trust to give your feet the best possible care.

who helps provide the information you need when deciding on surgery.

SPINE, BACK, AND NECK PROBLEMS CAN LEAD TO VARIOUS SYMPTOMS, INCLUDING SEVERE PAIN THAT AFFECTS EVERY MOVE YOU MAKE. Thanks to modern medical science, you don’t have to live with chronic spine, neck, or back pain. A spine and back surgeon can pinpoint your problem and develop a personalized treatment plan for conditions such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, or a herniated disc. Today’s treatment options range from nonsurgical approaches to minimally invasive surgical techniques. It’s important to be aware of every possible option and to be comfortable with a physician before deciding on your treatment.

Let’s say that your pain has finally gotten bad "When getting around is getting difficult, it may be time to make an appointment with an orthopedic or spine surgeon. These surgeons are experts in treating the back, neck, spine, shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist, hip, knee, ankle, and feet. When selecting a surgeon, it’s important to know that surgery may be an option, but it’s not the only answer to many health concerns. Qualified doctors will talk you through all treatment options available to you to help you feel comfortable in the next step on your path to wellness. It’s important to find a doctor that you feel comfortable with and trust so you’ll be at ease throughout the process."

enough that you’re considering spine surgery to help relieve that pain. Having made that decision, the next task is to find the right spine surgeon, and in making your choice, there are several primary considerations to keep in mind. First, remember that spine surgery is almost always an elective procedure, and there are very few times when it is absolutely essential. You’re the only one who knows your pain level, and the final decision to proceed with the surgery is your decision. The surgeon’s role is to educate and assist you with your decision, providing information

about your range of options, the difficulty and risk of each procedure, and potential benefits. Therefore, it’s important to select a surgeon

Another consideration is whether an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon should perform the surgery. While each has a different focus in training, generally, both are equally qualified to do most spine surgery. Exceptions would be that a neurosurgeon is generally better suited for tumor surgery, while an orthopedic surgeon is better qualified for correcting a deformity. In reality, neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons often consult together on cases and sometimes work together in the operating room. At the very least, you should make sure that your surgeon is board certified or board eligible in either orthopedic or neurological surgery. An additional important factor is the amount of the surgeon’s practice that’s devoted to spine surgery. A physician who focuses on spine surgery will be far more adept and current in newer surgical techniques than one who only occasionally performs spine surgery. The spine surgeon you’re considering should also be open to your questions. For example, what is the specific anatomic condition being addressed? What’s likely to happen if the condition is left untreated? Are there other viable options instead of surgery? What is the risk to benefit ratio, that is, the chance of a bad outcome weighed against the possibility of a good outcome? If the spine surgeon doesn’t welcome your questions, you should probably consider another surgeon. Further, after the first consultation, the surgeon should recommend a second visit, giving you time to consider your options and think of other questions. Finally, don’t forget to check on insurance coverage for the procedure.

A GOOD OVERHEAD GARAGE DOOR WILL LAST FOR DECADES — EVEN A LIFETIME — AND CAN ADD TO THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME. But this is one project even the most ardent DIYer should leave to the pros. It makes sense to spend time and effort choosing the right door and the right door company to install and maintain it. Because every garage is different, it’s not a good idea to buy an overhead garage door online. A knowledgeable salesperson can come to your home and check details like opening size and shape, headroom, and side clearance, talk to you about features that fit your lifestyle and help you make design decisions.

“A standard 16X7 non-insulated garage door cost is $799. That includes tax, installation, and hauling off of the existing garage door.”

Kyle, Owner VIKING OVERHE AD DOOR

An overhead garage door is an investment, so who you trust to sell, install, and stand behind it is essential. Begin by asking your friends and neighbors about the experiences they’ve had with overhead door companies — good and bad. Ask whether they’ve had any emergencies and how responsive their company was. If they had questions, how hard was it to get an answer? Look online for the highest-rated company that’s reasonably close to you if you need repairs/maintenance in the future. Peruse their website. Visit the Better Business Bureau and other websites to see what ratings they’ve earned. And read online customer reviews. Any company you consider should have a solid reputation and be knowledgeable, experienced, and available to you when you need them. A salesperson should be eager to come to your

home and spend time walking you through the pros and cons of different designs, the benefits of insulation (to keep your garage warm), and different mechanism options. They should offer you a free quote and multiple prices and design options. Ask them why they work with the manufacturers they do and what kind of warranties they offer. A well-built and properly insulated garage door is a critical part of your home’s security and energy efficiency. Your salesperson should walk you through each choice’s safety and efficiency aspects without pressuring you to buy. Ask for customers you can call for referrals, particularly someone who’s had an issue the company resolved. Make sure any company you hire is fully licensed and insured. You’ll need to have some recourse if the job isn’t completed or doesn’t meet your standards and protected from liability if one of the company’s workers is injured while installing your door. If a company doesn’t provide you with enough information or creates a sense of urgency to make an immediate decision, that should be a red flag. Make it clear you’re not prepared to make a decision or sign any paperwork the first time you meet with them. And beware of prices that seem too good to be true. They probably are. A new overhead garage door is an investment in your most expensive possession — your home. Do your homework and align yourself with the right company for the lifetime of your door.

IF YOU’RE IN THE MARKET FOR A GENERAL SURGEON, YOU’VE PROBABLY EXHAUSTED ALL YOUR NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS. None of us wants to have surgery. But sometimes it’s your best and most viable choice. General surgeons are educated and trained in the diagnosis and preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patient care. Some surgeons put in the extra time required to offer state-of-the-art robotic surgery for greater precision and more favorable outcomes. Some conditions that may have you shopping for a surgeon are hernia, appendicitis, hemorrhoids, thyroid or parathyroid disease, breast cancer, gallbladder, Crohn’s disease, or complications from a previous surgery.

If your primary care provider is the one recommending a surgeon, they’re a good place to start. Ask for surgeons they recommend. But be sure to inquire, “Why are you recommending this surgeon?” If the answer is, “They accept your insurance,” that’s not a great recommendation. If the answer is “They are the surgeon we chose for my wife’s (mother’s, daughter’s, my) surgery,” now we’ve got a robust referral. Take your doctor’s recommendations and kick them around with family members, friends, or other medical specialists to see what they have to say. Once you have a few candidates, research their credentials and experience on sites such as Healthgrades.com or DocInfo.org. If the surgeon is board certified, you know they’ve completed at least five years of residency training following medical school, met all American Board of Surgery training

Reading what other people are saying online about a doctor can provide some insight. Are patients generally happy with the care they received? Do they report positive outcomes? Online patient satisfaction surveys also typically ask about appointment scheduling, wait times, office environment, and office staff friendliness. As you narrow your list, call each surgeon’s office to schedule a consultation and meet the doctor. Once there, inquire specifically about their experience with your condition and the procedure you require. What complication might you experience? What are your risk factors? Inquire which hospital or out-patient center they use and do a little homework on them, too. Patients at top-rated facilities can have fewer complications and better success rates. How does each surgeon communicate? Are you comfortable talking to them about personal topics? Do they show an interest in getting to know you? Do they welcome your questions and answer them thoroughly? Are they receptive to your treatment preferences? Do they include your input in decisions related to your care? Do you feel rushed? Of course, you’ll want to find out what your insurance covers. A general surgeon who participates in your plan will mean less out-ofpocket. But if you find the perfect surgeon for you and they’re not on your insurance, find out what it will cost to use an out-of-plan provider and weigh your options. If it’s not too different, it may be worth some extra expense to know you’re working with the best.

IF YOU’RE EXPERIENCING DEPRESSION, ANXIETY, FATIGUE, HOT FLASHES, WEIGHT GAIN, OR BONE LOSS, YOU MAY BE A CANDIDATE FOR HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY. HRT can address these and other symptoms and help you feel like yourself again. But hormonal health — in men or women — is a complicated science. The best HRT doctors understand there’s no one-size-fi ts-all solution. Because no two people are the same, each with our own symptoms and preferences, medical histories, and treatment results, it’s imperative to choose a hormonal health practitioner qualified to deliver individualized care and get you back to living your best life.

Today, more clinics than ever are offering HRT. This is good and bad. It’s good because the therapy is available to more men and women who need it. But not everyone administering the treatment is trained or experienced in providing the highest quality care. “Utilizing the BioTE Method of Hormone Optimization, I have been able to achieve optimal health results for thousands of patients. I feel so lucky to be able to help patients feel their very best by developing an individualized care plan for each person who trusts me with their health care.”

While your primary care practitioner or gynecologist may be qualified to prescribe HRT, they may not have the specialized knowledge of a practitioner who focuses primarily on hormonal health. The best practitioners go above and beyond with advanced qualifications, such as fellowships, ongoing education, membership in organizations such as the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and even board certification to ensure their patients achieve the best results. Investigate what special training potential practitioners have acquired and which specialized resources they have in-house. Do they offer full-scale lab testing for serum lab samples? Look for a practitioner who provides a comprehensive range of treatment options, maintains partnerships with high-end compounding pharmacies, and can offer you pharmaceutical-grade supplements as needed. One of the treatment options to look for is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). With BHRT, your treatment can be fully tailored to your needs and adjusted as your needs change. Many patients who’ve been unsuccessful with conventional hormone therapies have found meaningful symptom relief with BHRT. Look for a hormonal health practitioner who takes a holistic approach to health, including proper nutrition, fitness, stress reduction, and healthy lifestyle choices, all of which can affect hormone levels and your overall sense of well-being. Your provider should talk to you about your health goals and be willing to work with other practitioners to ensure you’re receiving the best care. Look for a provider who emphasizes individualized care and attention. Ask any providers you’re considering how much time they typically spend with a patient during consultation and follow-up appointments. Will they take time to understand your medical background, symptoms, concerns, and questions? How will they monitor your progress? Doing a little homework now can help you find just the right partner on your journey toward optimal health?

A HAIR SALON

BY L A R U E G I L L E S P I E

FINDING THE RIGHT SALON AND STYLIST FOR YOUR HAIR CAN BE NERVE-WRACKING. Your last stylist knew you so well and never chopped off too much hair or dyed it fire-engine red when all you wanted was a hint of crimson (or maybe they did, and that’s why they’re your last stylist now). For whatever reason, you’re in the market for something new. Maybe you’ve tried a salon near you for the sake of convenience, only to walk out with a hairstyle that leaves you in tears. But you can’t cut your own hair, and applying color from a box is oh-so-tedious. The bottom line is that you’ve got to find a qualified professional, STAT. Here’s how.

One of the best ways to find a salon and stylist is by looking at the people around you. Have a co-worker who could give Jennifer Aniston’s famous tresses a run for their money? Do you have a friend whose coiffure you envy? Does the barista at your fave coffee shop boast lustrous locks you wish to emulate? Don’t be shy. Ask them where they go. Chances are they’re going to gush about their stylist and recommend them. Nothing beats a glowing recommendation! Don’t have anyone around you like that? Or did you move to a new area where you don’t know that many people? Don’t worry. The web is your new best friend. Right at your fingertips, you can get dozens of hits within seconds. Be as specific as you need to be when searching and include your community. Whether you need someone who’s

great with color or who specializes in extensions, you’ll be able to find a few suggestions. Tech-savvy stylists have social media accounts like Instagram and Twitter and personal websites where they post pictures of their work. So be sure to check social media out as well. You want to find a hairstylist who has experience working with hair like yours. Call ahead and see if you can take a few minutes to talk shop with someone who knows how to do what you’re looking for. Do they seem experienced and knowledgeable? Or have they never heard of what you’re asking for in their life? As far as the salon goes, there are some things to keep in mind. Cleanliness is a big one. If the hair is piled up on the ground and dye dots the walls, don’t go. Professionalism is another. Is the receptionist courteous and knowledgeable? Is the stylist attentive, and do they listen to your needs? You can find out a lot about a salon by scheduling a consultation before you get anything done. Don’t just trust anyone with your hair. Do your research, take your time, and make an educated choice. If it doesn’t work out, don’t beat yourself up. Just try again. Eventually, you’ll find that rare stylist — the one you hope you won’t be needing to replace any time soon.

WHEN YOU LOOK GOOD, YOU FEEL GOOD. Sure, it sounds cliché, but there’s truth in these words. Looking your best boosts self-confidence and self-esteem, and those are just a few of the benefits. With all the advantages, no wonder the demand for quality medical spa services has grown. Thanks to new technology, products, and techniques, it’s easier than ever to look younger, more rested and refreshed, and even slimmer. In the hands of an experienced, welltrained medspa team, your results can look natural and noticeable, delivering real value for your money.

A medspa is a hybrid between a medical clinic and a day spa. One or more medical doctors are typically involved, but the extent of their involvement varies. Some medspas are overseen by a medical director or a physician owner who offices across town. Others have a physician onsite who may perform several of the services him or herself. Because these scenarios and variations exist, it’s important to know the differences and choose what you’re comfortable with. The best way to become acquainted with a medspa is to schedule a complimentary consultation. This will give you a feel for the overall vibe and for the staff. Is the atmosphere serene and pampering or bright and upbeat? Is the staff attentive, friendly, and helpful? Do you feel welcome and at ease? Did you encounter any “hard sell” tactics? Does the medspa specialize in anything, such as injectables or

During your consultation, understand who will be performing the recommended procedure or procedures. Ask about training, certification, and other credentials, and find out how long the individual who will be treating you has been performing the procedure. Request to speak with him or her and ask questions, including how many treatments it takes to see results. Everyone is different, but they should give you an average expected treatment period. Also, request to see actual before and after pictures of their work. This way, at the time of the procedure, there should be no second guesses. Because new technology is introduced and products evolve rapidly, ask if the medspa’s equipment and products (injectables, peels, serums, etc.) are state-of-the-art and ask specifically why they have chosen them. Avoid getting caught up with your own in-depth evaluation of technology and products (leave it to the experts) but having the medspa explain what they use and why is a valuable component of your decision process. Answers that anyone could give (e.g., “It works the best!”) should raise an eyebrow. Be aware that some medspas offer services such as IV hydration/nutrition, medical weight loss, and hormone replacement therapy in addition to aesthetic services. Consider the scope of the services provided and whether you want a specialized medspa or a “one-stop-shop.” Once you find an outstanding medspa, you are likely to become a customer for life. The time you spend upfront during the selection process will pay off.

EVER HAD A WEIRD RASH THAT NEEDED ATTENTION? ARE YOU WORRIED SOME OF YOUR MOLES MIGHT BE CHANGING IN SIZE OR SHAPE? Is your hair thinning on top? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a dermatologist, who is trained in treating hair, skin, nails, and mucous membranes (the lining inside your mouth, nose, and eyelids), can diagnose and treat these types of issues plus up to 3,000 others, including eczema, acne, skin cancer, psoriasis, and nail infections. Dermatologists can help diminish wrinkles, age spots, and scars, too, and can provide solutions for thinning hair. It’s important to have a great dermatologist in your corner.

Before you try to find a qualified dermatologist, make sure you’re looking in the right places.

“Choosing the right dermatologist team is so imperative. A good dermatologist will look you over from head to toe, scanning your skin for potential cancers. Early detection is essential. For cosmetic procedures, it is very important to find a dermatologist who listens and understands your goals. If all you want are chemical peels, laser treatments, Botox, or fillers, then you might consider a dermatologist who specializes in cosmetic dermatology. For other issues, such as acne, rashes, rosacea, mole checks, and thinning hair, maybe you’d prefer a general dermatologist. Ask for referrals from your friends, family, co-workers, or your insurance company, depending on what you’re looking for. Check the physicians’ bios on their websites to see what kind of background and education they have and how long they’ve been in practice. Board certification by the American Academy of Dermatology is important. Look for online reviews of the doctors in question and see if they’ve published articles anywhere. The more you can find out about the doctor beforehand, the better.

Next, book a consultation with the dermatologist. If you have to book your consultation a few weeks out, that could be an indicator that this doctor is in high demand, so don’t let that alone be a turn-off. While in the consultation or on your first appointment (if you chose not to book a consult), ask as many questions as you’d like. Pay attention to whether or not the staff is listening to you and show signs of caring for you and your needs. They should ask you about your entire health, not just the condition being presented. Personality isn’t everything, but expertise and the ability to provide the right solutions are paramount. It can be off-putting if you go to a dermatologist who quickly looks at your issues, doesn’t ask many questions, and just as quickly reaches for the prescription pad. A great doctor will take the time to answer your questions, dig deeper into what the problem could be, and provide well thought out solutions. Bottom line? Take your time. Do your research. And choose accordingly. It’s your skin and it deserves the best care you can get.

WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR AN INSURANCE AGENT, YOU MAY BE TEMPTED TO SHOP BY PRICE, BUT THERE ARE DEFINITELY OTHER MORE IMPORTANT VARIABLES THAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED. Lower pricing could mean inferior coverage causing additional out-of-pocket expenses for you when resolving a claim on your property.

“Careful consideration needs to be applied when selecting your insurance. What coverage do you need for your protection? Understand what is covered in the policy contract so you don’t have a huge unexpected out of pocket expense on a claim. You want to find a well-established, experienced agent in your community, possibly one that a reliable friend uses. Visit with the prospective agent personally and ask questions to make sure this is someone you feel confident will be available to help you with all of your insurance needs. Take the time to check with the Better Business Bureau and State Board of Insurance to make sure there are no complaints against the agent or insurance company. As the insurance agent gives you quotes for your property, does he/she explain the coverages and pricing to your satisfaction? It is important you understand your policy in the event you need to file a claim, so you won’t be caught by surprise by the amount of money you are paying out of your pocket to repair/resolve the situation.

Ultimately what separates a good agent from a great agent is customer service. Ask potential agents if they or someone in the office and/or insurance company are available to you 24/7 so that if the unexpected happens, they will be there when you need them the most. Insurance is for your protection, and it is important you understand what you have available to you. Look for an agent who is willing to spend time with you to help you understand and feel comfortable knowing you have exactly what you need in the event of a loss to your auto or home. Doing a little legwork now should help you land an insurance agent you can trust to provide you with the best coverage for your insurance needs for years to come. Second, the area of vein care should be a primary focus of that doctor’s practice. Some physicians secure fellowships in vascular surgery or cardiology, and some get additional certification specific to treatment of vein disease. Certification through the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine is one way a physician can show their commitment to the treatment of vein related problems.

AN ESTIMATED 30 TO 60 PERCENT OF ADULTS SUFFER FROM LEG SWELLING AND DISCOMFORT FROM VEIN DISEASE, ESPECIALLY VARICOSE VEINS OR SPIDER VEINS. When these appear as swollen, twisted clusters near the surface of the skin, they are often thought of as a cosmetic affliction. But they may be far more than that. Not only are they embarrassing and painful, they may also signal a risk for other serious health issues such as blood clots. Only a vascular specialist can properly diagnose the source of your symptoms and determine the type of treatments that will be most effective in correcting your problems.

Varicose veins and spider veins arise from an underlying venous disease. They are complex conditions that should be treated by a highly trained and experienced vein specialist. Choosing the right provider will ensure that your condition is properly diagnosed and "If you are experiencing leg pain, night cramps, restless legs, or skin changes on your legs, it's very possible you could have a vein problem. treated, and to help you find the right specialist, we offer the following guidelines. First, the vein specialist treating you should be a physician, either a medical doctor (MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO). Both have a bachelor’s degree, followed by four years of medical school and then a residency lasting three

Third, you might want to ask if they use registered vascular technicians (RVTs) to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of vein related issues. An RVT is a person trained and certified in the use of ultrasound technology to thoroughly assess and provide accurate information related to vascular problems. This allows for an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan specific to your needs. The physician’s equipment is another factor in your choice. The vein specialist you choose should have state-of-the-art equipment that diagnoses and treats a wide range of vascular conditions in the least invasive way possible. You might also want to seek out references and referrals. Comments and recommendations from past patients are readily available online, though be careful not to let the complaints of one dissatisfied patient influence your choice. Remember that no matter your field, you’ll never satisfy everyone. You may also ask your primary care physician which vein specialist they would recommend or choose for treatment of their own vein conditions. Don’t overlook insurance coverage. Many vein related issues and treatments are covered by insurance if deemed medically necessary. Your vein specialist can tell you if your concerns and treatment are considered medically necessary or cosmetic, and the physician’s staff should be willing to contact your insurer to verify that medically necessary procedures are covered. Finally, qualifications aren’t everything. You and your doctor should be a good match in personality and in feelings of trust. When you and your doctor are on the same page, this actually increases your confidence in your doctor and that the ultimate results will make you a happy patient.

AS HUMAN BEINGS, WE’RE HARDWIRED TO SOCIALIZE WITH OTHERS. But hearing loss can make social situations difficult because hearing and understanding others is just too much work. Self-imposed social isolation can lead to depression and a decreased quality of life. To make matters worse, when the brain is deprived of auditory stimulation for a long time, it becomes harder to correct hearing problems. Fortunately, the field of audiology has grown by leaps and bounds. It’s important to take time to find the right audiologist sooner rather than later and let them get you back to your family and friends, doing the things you love again.

A licensed audiologist can determine your degree of hearing loss as well as ensure that the specific hearing device you use will be the best option for your condition and your lifestyle. “If you, or someone you know, are looking for an audiologist, it’s important to understand what to look for and the value that a good audiology practice should provide. If you have a family member or friend that has visited an audiologist, ask him or her for advice on whom to see. You might also ask your primary care doctor or other specialists who they recommend. Be sure to check your insurance. It may only cover audiologists who are within the plan. Or it may require a referral from your primary care provider to cover the services. Look for an audiologist who’s been in practice awhile but who embraces the latest in hearing correction technology. Check local audiologists online and read some patient reviews. Sites like ZocDoc,

People with negative experiences are more inclined to leave comments than those who left completely satisfied. Pay attention if you see a pattern of complaints, but make sure to do your own research. Visit their website and read their professional bio to determine their education level and time spent in the industry. Professional credentials are important, too. The letters AuD after someone’s name means they obtained their doctor of audiology degree. You may also see MS for Master of Science, MA for Master of Arts, BC-HIS for board certified hearing instrument specialist, or CCC-A for certificate of clinical competence in audiology. Depending on where you live, you may not have many options for audiologists in your area. However, you probably don’t want to travel too far to find someone. Your hearing aid may need adjusting to get it working right for you initially and will certainly need some attention from time to time. And you won’t want a long trek each time it needs to be adjusted or checked. A good audiologist should love what they do and enjoy helping people regain one of their five senses. If you visit an audiologist and feel like the sale is more important than caring for you and your hearing, you’ll probably want to reconsider other options. Hearing devices can be costly but more than worth the investment if it means you can enjoy spending time with your friends and family again. Finding the right audio professional should be worth all the time it takes to search for them.

for yourself or someone you know

Ask your insurance provider! Insurance companies have a full list of audiologists and audiology practices in their provider network that they can suggest to you. Depending on your insurance and coverage, you may be required to obtain a referral from your primary care doctor before your appointment. A good audiology practice will be able to help you navigate the potential requirements and responsibilities you may have before your appointment.

Do your own research! If an audiologist or an audiology practice has been helping people hear better for 20+ years, they likely have a very good connection to the surrounding community. They also are likely to have a staff that understands how to provide a positive patient experience and has a proven history for doing so. A good audiology practice will have a user friendly and easy to navigate website that provides answers to some of the most common questions you might have. A good audiology practice will also have a strong number of positive online reviews and testimonials from current patients sharing their experiences with that practice.

Try before you invest! Making an investment in better hearing oftentimes involves the purchase of hearing aids. A good audiology practice will provide you with a live, in-office listening experience with hearing aids. A good audiology practice will provide you with the opportunity to try the hearing aids outside of the office so that you can realize the difference hearing aids can make on your overall quality of life. This will give you a chance to learn more about the chiropractor, the practice, and the techniques or treatment methods used, which can vary widely. You may also want to consider office waiting times, ease of scheduling, and location, as these may affect your overall experience. Because of the nature of chiropractic treatment, you will want to feel very comfortable with the chiropractic clinic you select.

ARE YOU EXPERIENCING CHRONIC MUSCLE PAIN? Have you noticed that you are wearing out your shoes differently? Maybe you suffer from regular headaches, or you’ve recently been in an accident. There are many reasons to visit a chiropractor for an adjustment — these are just a few of the more common complaints chiropractors tend to hear from their patients on a daily basis. Whatever the reason for scheduling an appointment, you want to make sure you are selecting the right chiropractor for your specific needs and symptoms. So how do you do that?

Chiropractic treatment is a physical procedure. Experts say consideration should be given to both doctor-patient rapport, as well as joint manipulation style. You’ll want to ask your current healthcare providers for recommendations. You want to select someone competent and trustworthy. You can also ask friends and co-workers for recommendations also but remember that one person’s definition of the “best chiropractor” may look entirely different than the next. The goal is to find the best fit for your individual chiropractic needs. Multiple referrals for the same chiropractor are usually a good sign and probably something worth checking out. You’ll probably want to find out who takes your insurance. Before selecting a chiropractor and beginning treatment, you should either “interview” the potential chiropractic candidates over

Is the chiropractor friendly and courteous? Do you feel comfortable talking to them? Does he or she fully answer all of your questions? How many years do they have in practice? Do they have a specific undergraduate or postgraduate specialty? (Not a requirement by any means, but some chiropractors decide to pursue postgraduate programs in related specialties that could be useful in treating your issue.) Has she treated many patients with conditions like yours? You’ll definitely want to ask about treatment plans and costs. Some chiropractors perform joint manipulation with their hands only, while others use instruments. Some treat using quick and firm manipulation, while others employ a lighter touch. Treatment is largely derived from both the healthcare provider and the patient’s individual preferences, so make sure to choose someone who listens to your concerns and takes into account your wishes. You may need to do additional research on any techniques the chiropractor says will be used before making up your mind. You should check with your state’s Chiropractic Regulation and Licensing Board — verify potential chiropractic candidates are in good standing and without disciplinary action. Selecting any healthcare professional is a big deal. Don’t feel like you have to choose the very first chiropractor you meet with. Feel free to interview many candidates before making your decision. The chiropractor’s role is to make recommendations for treatment. Ultimately, you choose whether or not to accept.

A HOME REMODELER

What is their experience with the work you need done? Will they be available for regular contact via phone or email? Can you expect weekly in-person updates from the foreman?

HOME SWEET HOME IS WHERE YOU RELAX AFTER A LONG DAY, ENTERTAIN FRIENDS, AND WATCH YOUR KIDS GROW UP. But maybe your home isn’t quite so sweet anymore. You’ve outgrown your living space. You want more modern aesthetics, energy efficiency, new bathrooms, a sleek kitchen, or a complete overhaul. Whatever your desires, a home remodeler can help. You might not feel like going through the process of selling your home and searching for a new one when you can work with what you already have. And the money you put into remodeling could increase the value of your real estate, resulting in solid return on investment if you do choose to sell down the line.

A home remodeler will work with you to create more inviting spaces where you can make special memories. Home remodeling begins with choosing the best contractor, someone who will do a great job for a reasonable fee. Start by researching reference websites and asking friends and neighbors. Only consider hiring a contractor who is licensed, insured, and bonded. Be mindful of each contractor’s qualifications. Which national trade organization certifications do they hold? This will clue you into their ethical standards. Do they have any other titles or memberships? Ask for referrals and references. Follow up with references to make sure work was done in a timely, efficient, and satisfactory manner. Talk to potential contractors. Is communication clear? Do they understand your vision?

Gather their input. How would they handle the job? Would they cut corners? With home remodeling, you often get what you pay for — so don’t immediately jump on the lowest bid. This may mean they are using poor quality materials, which you may regret later. That said, don’t always go with the highest bid either. There’s no sense in paying too much. Try to find a nice balance between cost and quality, based on your requirements. Get everything in writing. Ask for a specific description of the project plans, timeline, expenses, and payment arrangement. Your contract should include all of this, along with the contractor’s name and license number, the names of everyone involved, and an agreement about how to handle unexpected costs. Keep contact information on hand, as well as a copy of all receipts. Be clear about your budget. You may have to break down a larger renovation project into phases. You could also save some money by doing some things yourself, such as painting walls or cleaning up construction debris. Ask for information. Is your contractor applying for all the necessary permits and following regulations? Can you review sample materials? Get ready. Select a staging area where workers can enter, exit, and keep supplies. Clear the construction zone of anything breakable or valuable. To limit confusion, decide on one person to be your point of contact with the contractor. Let your neighbors know what you’re doing and what to expect. Be patient while the home remodeling unfolds. Keep the end goal in mind. Soon enough, you will enjoy a new, sweeter home.

OBESITY IS A MAJOR EPIDEMIC OF OUR GENERATION, WITH MORE THAN 42% OF ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES SUFFERING FROM THIS DISEASE. More than just a problem of “girth control,” obesity puts people at increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, and more. As the rate of obesity has grown in the U.S., so has the multi-billion-dollar diet industry. Yet with all the diets, diet plans, and pseudo-diets available, millions of Americans continue to struggle to lose weight and keep it off. For a growing number of Americans, bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, offers another option.

If you think bariatric surgery might be for you, start by finding weight loss surgery programs in your area and doing some research. “Once you’ve decided bariatric surgery is the next step in our weight loss journey, finding the right bariatric surgeon is essential in helping you reach your goal. As with any surgery, you want to find a professional with a record of good outcomes and positive patient experiences. But bariatric surgery is different from most surgeries because patients follow up with their bariatric surgeon for 18 to 24 months after their procedure - and sometimes for life. Look for a surgeon who listens to you and takes time to understand your goals.”

There is a great deal of free information available on credible websites, social media, and in weight loss surgery forums. Attend free informational seminars (often led by a weight loss surgeon) where you can listen, ask questions, and gather detailed information on that specific program. Keep in mind that we now have more types of weight loss surgery to choose from than ever before. Each will affect you differently, so when searching for a bariatric surgeon, it’s wise to look for those who offer more than one surgical option. This way, the surgeon can help you select the surgery that will help you best meet your weight loss goals, versus trying to force-fit you into a solution that may not be optimal for you.

Other considerations include the surgeon’s experience and credentials and where the surgery is performed. Bariatric surgeons are often fellowship-trained today, although many excellent surgeons with a proven track record and extensive experience began their practice before these fellowships were generally available. Facility accreditation also helps ensure quality of care. The Metabolic Bariatric Surgery and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) is the gold standard in accreditation. In addition, carefully look at the ancillary and follow-up services provided by the program a bariatric surgeon is associated with. Weight loss surgery itself is a tool, not a magic wand. During your weight loss journey, you will likely need emotional support, guidance with exercise, and information about nutrition and making the right food choices. A comprehensive surgical weight loss program will offer these things and possibly more. Be sure to gain an understanding of what services will be available to you before you undergo surgery. Finally, plan to establish a lasting relationship with your bariatric surgeon and his or her staff. How you feel about the program staff is important because you will likely interface more with the staff than with the surgeon for ongoing support, questions, and general follow-up. If you believe you can develop a good rapport with them, it’s a good sign. Ultimately, your success depends on your commitment to making lifelong lifestyle changes. Choosing a surgeon and program that’s a good fit for you will ultimately help you achieve your weight loss goals.

AS A CARING PARENT, YOU WANT TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD’S TEETH. MANY FAMILIES VISIT A GENERAL DENTIST. However, a pediatric dentist is better suited for taking care of your son or daughter. This type of dentist, a specialist entirely focused on children’s teeth and gums, is used to helping kids feel relaxed, so they aren’t fearful of a checkup. The equipment at a pediatric office is designed and optimized for children. The environment will usually offer toys and a bright color scheme. Finally, prevention is a central mission — laying the groundwork for a lifetime of solid oral health.

Recognizing the importance of a pediatric dentist, the next step is to review the available options. Here are a few pointers to find one who will expertly protect your child’s teeth while keeping them at ease. As pediatric dentists, our primary focus is laying the foundation for healthy teeth and gums from a very early age. This includes positive dental visits that instill confidence in the child, as well as preventing and treating decay and screening for future orthodontic issues. Our goal is to not only make visiting the dentist fun, but also to emphasize the importance of oral health as a vital part of whole body health. Dr. Danny Wright PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY OF MANSFIELD

Know where to look. You can ask loved ones and others in your social networks for their suggestions, or you can get referred through your pediatrician. Local magazines and websites provide ideas, as well. Another way to search is through provider-finder portals, such as the one from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). Check for credibility. You want to know that your choice of a pediatric dentist is a proven professional who is active in the field. They should have accreditations, such as membership in the AAPD, and continue to sharpen their perspective through seminars and continuing education courses.

Go see for yourself. When you think you have found a strong candidate, it is time to scout the location physically. The ambiance in the office should be comfortable and welcoming. Colors should be warm, and toys or manipulatives should be available. These familiar elements of a kid-friendly space will both help your son or daughter feel at ease and take their mind off the appointment. Furthermore, the dentist and staff should be friendly and accommodating to the distractibility and anxieties of children. When you visit, stay a little longer in the waiting room, checking to make sure that the dental team excels at engaging and treating children. Get answers to a few questions before you book the appointment. Does the dental office have an answering service for off-hour emergencies? Is your dental insurance accepted? What else is important to you? Make sure all your questions are answered before you proceed with booking the first appointment. After an initial visit, you want to evaluate whether this practice met your expectations. Did your child get seen by the dentist at the scheduled time? Did they ask for full dental and medical records? Was the examination both careful and comprehensive? Did you get updated on the development of your son or daughter’s teeth? Finally, to what degree did members of the staff discuss oral health with your child? A competent and concerned pediatric dentist will inform your child about the influence of diet on teeth, go over proper brushing and flossing habits (including a demonstration), and set a timeline for the arrival of your child’s permanent teeth. Through your initial research and post-appointment questions, you should be able to find a great pediatric dentist to safeguard your child’s current and lifelong health.

INSTALLING A NEW ROOF IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS YOU’LL RUN INTO AS A HOMEOWNER, AND AN EXPENSIVE ONE. While several variables determine the cost, a replacement roof routinely runs into the tens of thousands. The average lifespan of a roof in the Lone Star State — depending on the material type and workmanship — is 15 to more than 30 years. Well-maintained stone, tile, and metal roofs can last longer.

Considering the cost and value of a new roof, it’s important to follow a few basic rules when searching for a roofing contractor. First, be aware there aren’t any official licensing requirements for roofing contractors in the state of Texas. “Homeowners should be aware of the new law which began in September of last year that says that homeowners must pay their own deductibles. It is against the law to use a contractor that covers deductibles.”

Before obtaining written estimates, ask a few questions to steer you in the right direction. Insurance is a must. Make sure a contractor has valid, unexpired worker’s compensation and liability insurance. (Workman’s compensation covers the employees on your property, while general liability insurance covers

Anyone wanting to call themselves roofers or roofing companies can do so and start taking on projects. Your best bet is to look for local roofing companies with a good reputation and longevity in the business. Cheap roofing deals may be tempting, but buyer beware.

Once you’ve narrowed your selection down to two or three contractors, get estimates. During this process, the roofer should discuss different roofing materials with you and provide good, better, best estimates. Inquire if the estimates include removal of the old roof and all trash materials associated with the project. Ask about the cost of plywood if a rotten roof or soft roof decking is discovered, and about how the contractor will protect the job-in-progress in the event of bad weather. Always take time to get a description of the manufacturer’s warranty from the contractor, then get it in writing, read it, and understand the inclusions and exclusions. Do they match what the contractor explained to you? Some of the best cover material cost, labor cost, and even roof removal cost. Manufacturer warranties cover a material defect that caused the roof failure, but they don’t cover an improperly installed roof. Reputable roofing contractors often offer a workmanship warranty in addition to the manufacturers’ warranty because they trust the quality of their installations. Ask your contractor what they offer. Before you sign on the dotted line, check your city to determine if your project needs a permit. If so, it should be pulled by the contractor, not you, the homeowner. If the contractor balks at this, keep looking. Also, ask the contractor for references from customers who have the same type of roofing system installed that you’re considering. Contact them to see if the contractor completed the job satisfactorily. Being confident you’ve selected the right roofing contractor will help you feel comfortable and certain that you have a quality roof overhead — and that your hard-earned money has been wisely spent.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A WOMAN AND HER OB-GYN IS SACRED. Next time you’re with a group of girlfriends, bring up the subject and prepare for impassioned language — and maybe even a few superlatives — as each woman extols hers as “the best,” “the most compassionate,” or “the most experienced.” But ask what specific universal qualities make for the perfect OB-GYN, and your friends probably won’t agree. Some women won’t go to a male doctor, while others prefer a man. Some want their questions answered in minute detail, while others want an overview. Some may prefer a doctor who shares their religious beliefs, while others don’t think such factors are important.

If you’re in the market for an OB-GYN, understand that you’ll be sharing some of the most personal details of your life. It’s not a quest to take lightly. You need to find that one person you’ll feel comfortable discussing all that below-the-belt stuff with — including your sex life — and issues like pregnancy, should you arrive there. A good place to begin is with an inventory of your personal preferences. Then consider why you’re seeking their care in the first place. Are you having trouble getting pregnant and looking for a fertility specialist? Mired in menopausal symptoms and prefer a doctor who’s been there, done that? If you’re looking for someone to tick all the well-woman boxes (cancer screenings, breast exams, pelvic exams), look for a gynecologist or women’s health specialist. and delivery eventually. If you have specific problems such as infertility, cancer, or urinary incontinence, you may be looking for a specialist in that field. Or you may want an OB-GYN to serve as your primary care provider and coordinate services with specialists. Once you have an idea what you want, ask girlfriends and family members what they’ve heard about any doctor you’re considering. Check websites that display credentials, specialties, years in practice, patient reviews and ratings, and education. You might also view the provider’s website for more complete bios and get an impression of the practice. During your first appointment, potential OB-GYNs should ask for a complete medical history and take the time to get to know you and your concerns. Qualities like respect and compassion, while important for any doctor, are even more important for the person with whom you’ll be discussing sex, family planning, mental health, and other highly personal topics. You want a practitioner who values your opinion and is there to educate you about your health options, then respects the choices you make. Again, while credentials, experience, and expertise are important when searching for any healthcare provider, your relationship is equally important. Don’t settle until you find an OB-GYN who makes you feel comfortable, confident, and valued.

If your yard doesn’t compliment your house — or your lifestyle — installing new landscaping or making improvements to existing features can be a major financial investment. But it can also increase your home’s value and your family’s outdoor enjoyment. Contractors generally will meet with you at least once free of charge to discuss your project and many give free estimates. Try to find three or four contractors to come for an initial consultation to discuss your needs and explain their services. Ask them to bring a portfolio of photos of past landscape projects and prepare a list of questions in advance to ask each potential firm. Remember, contractors who’ve been in business for decades have experience and reputation behind them, while new contractors may have fresh ideas and may charge less. Find out the contractor’s experience level with the type of project you have in mind. The more specialized your project, the more important it will be. Ask for a final budget and timeline in writing (at least a good ballpark). Ask about permits for decks and fences, sheds, gazebos, and pools. Their familiarity with these details is a good sign of how experienced they are. Ask about warranties for defects in craftsmanship and improper installation of decks, patios, and irrigation systems. Ask whether they offer continuing maintenance of your landscaping (although this isn’t a deal breaker). And call a few former clients. Ultimately, you’re looking for the lowestpriced, best-qualified candidate with solid references, professional integrity, and an artistic eye. Good luck!

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, obtain a firm quote for three companies. With this, expect a home evaluation from each. Make sure that the contractor does a thorough home evaluation to determine the best solution, using the Air Conditioning Contractors of America’s calculations, which are often required to be submitted to the city. Be leery of contractors who estimate based on house size, existing equipment, or vague rules of thumb, or attempt to quote over the phone. New HVAC systems today are 20 to 50 percent more efficient than models made even just 10 years ago. Contractors who don’t stay up to date with the latest technology might discourage you from buying high- efficiency equipment because they don’t know how to install it. Quality contractors will always present information on the latest models. Get written estimates — good, better, best — from your bidders, then compare cost, energy efficiency, warranties, and any add-ons, such as a whole-house humidifying system. The lowest price may not be the best deal over time if it’s not the most efficient system. Finally, sign a written proposal with your contractor before work commences. It can help protect you by specifying project costs, model numbers, job schedule, and warranty information. An HVAC contractor will play a crucial role in your home’s comfort, air quality, and safety. Summer, winter, fall, or spring, a comfortable climate inside your home is priceless.

Look at the other boarded pets. Do they have fresh water and clean kennels? Do they seem happy or depressed? Are they protected from weather conditions such as rain, snow, or intense sun? Ask about health requirements to make sure the other boarded pets will be current on vaccinations and free of fleas or ticks. Talk to the staff. Are they experienced and caring? Find out if the facility has a connection to a local veterinary office. What is the procedure if your pet needs medical attention? Will you be able to call each day to check on your furry friend? And if so, what are the hours you can expect someone to answer the phone? Think about how your pet interacts with others. Is he confrontational or shy? Is she territorial or friendly? Ask the staff how they treat rambunctious and aggressive cats or dogs — will they be kept separate from your pet? Is playtime supervised? Determine what a typical day will be like for your pet. What is the exercise schedule? How much time will they spend indoors and outdoors? What food will they eat? Are there additional services such as grooming? Once you’ve decided on a location, you may want a trial stay. Board your pet there for just one night while you’re nearby. Let staff know about your pet’s personality and special needs. Give your pet extra cuddles before and after you drop them off but avoid an emotional goodbye. See how your pet enjoys the experience, and then you’ll know if you’re both ready for a longer stay.

AN ONCOLOGIST

cancer. Remember, you want a well-experienced doctor.

WHEN IT COMES TO TREATING CANCER, IT PRACTICALLY TAKES A VILLAGE. Cancer treatment involves a team of specialists known as oncologists who are trained to combat cancer through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. These doctors explain the diagnosis and the stage of progression of cancers. Oncologists recommend treatments and discuss their side effects. Your care team will more than likely be made up of a medical oncologist, a surgical oncologist, and a radiation oncologist. Other specialists in this field include a gynecologic oncologist, pediatric oncologist, or a hematologist-oncologist who deals with blood-related cancers like leukemia. Choosing the right oncologist will be instrumental in making your treatment as smooth as possible.

The physician who diagnosed you with cancer will more than likely be the person to recommend an oncologist. You can also get recommendations from cancer survivors, you know. Check with your insurance to determine if “Texas Oncology brings cancer-fighting technology and expertise to the Mansfield and Arlington communities, so you can have access to leading edge cancer treatment with your support network right by your side. With compassion and understanding, our oncologists create comprehensive and personalized treatment plans to fight cancer.” Puneet K. Dhillon, D.O. TEX AS ONCOLOGY

your plan will accept the referred doctors. Only choose board-certified oncologists. Also, find out how many years of experience the specialist has in cancer care and select the most qualified one. The particular oncologist you choose will depend on what type of cancer you’re suffering from, so pay close attention to the oncologist’s specialty and only choose one that has a good track record. Ask the doctor about their success rate of treating patients who have survived your type of cancer. Ask about the number of cases the oncologist treats annually in relation to patients having your particular

Look on websites or literature available at the practice to review patient testimonials. What they say about the oncologist’s compassion and bedside manner is essential, as you will need to remain calm and relaxed during this process. Select a physician who you feel will treat you as if you were a member of the family. See how comfortable you feel with this doctor at the consultation, and make sure all your questions are addressed thoroughly and logically, without jumps to conclusion or judgment. Make sure that the practice has a good support team to meet your needs. This support team may consist of a registered nurse, social worker, nutritionist, pharmacist, and counselor. You will need medical and emotional help during your treatment. Knowing exactly where you will be receiving your cancer care is vital. Ask if you will be seeing the doctor at the office only or if your treatment will also be in a hospital or other location. In case you need to reach an oncologist during non-office hours or holidays, make sure you understand their contact procedure and who will be communicating with you during off-hours. Is it your physician or an associate? Knowing the doctor’s protocol will give you peace of mind. A cancer diagnosis can be a very challenging time in your life. Ensuring you have the right support team is the first step of many on the road to recovery.

they work, and what is best for your situation. Are they patient in answering your questions? ARE YOU TIRED OF WEARING CONTACTS OR GLASSES? Do you suffer from near-

sightedness, astigmatism, or farsightedness? If you’ve had enough of the hassle, it’s probably time to consider finding a doctor who can help you out with the LASIK procedure. This ophthalmologist will evaluate your vision to see if you are a good candidate for the procedure. The physician will handle the surgery and follow up visits. After your recovery, the ophthalmologist will examine your eyes to assure that they have healed properly and are healthy without any signs of infection. This doctor will also check your vision after the procedure. It’s hard to argue with the benefits of letting contacts and glasses no longer be something you need. When it comes to finding well-qualified LASIK providers, referrals from your general practitioner or optometrist will be a good starting point. Then, contact your insurance provider and check to see that the recommended ophthalmologists accept your plan. Call their offices or look online to make sure they are board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Research how many years of experience they have and how many LASIK procedures they have performed. Ask for literature showing patient testimonials. Once you are ready to schedule a consultation, make your office visit a fact-finding mission to ensure that you have selected the right LASIK surgeon. Knowing that the doctor uses the latest state-of-the-art technology is vital to the success of your procedure. Talk to your doctor about the various procedures, how

Ask about price and if the practice offers payment plans. Not having to pay in a lump sum is always a plus, especially if your insurance isn’t covering the procedure. However, if you are interested in a payment plan, ask if an additional fee will be charged. Be cautious of only basing your selection on the cheapest procedure available. The low price may be a warning sign that you may not be getting the highest quality doctor or cutting-edge technology. Also, keep in mind that if your eye problems are severe, that higher level of vision correction could increase the price. Learn what’s included in the price. Does it include post-procedure visits, and if so, how many? Are temporary eyeglasses or contacts required following the surgery, and are they included in the price? How long will you have to wear corrective lenses if needed? Make sure the physician addresses all your concerns, especially LASIK’s risks, discomfort, and recovery time. Ask about any medications that you will be required to take following the procedure, any side effects, and how long you will be required to use the pharmaceuticals. Find out if the medications are included in the price discussed. Lastly, always ask for a written quote. That way, you can keep your eye on finding the best doctor in the field without having to focus on going over budget. For some people, LASIK can be life changing. Making the right choice when it comes to a provider will help you make sure it’s life-changing for the better.

A CARDIOLOGIST

BY M I M I G R E E N W O O D K N I G H T

IN THE UNITED STATES, ONE OF EVERY FOUR DEATHS RESULTS FROM HEART DISEASE — MORE THAN 600,000 MEN AND WOMEN EACH YEAR (ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION). Even if cardiac disease doesn’t run in your family — but especially if it does — it’s important to find the best cardiologist available in your area. A cardiologist is a heart doctor who specializes in diagnosing, monitoring, and managing conditions of the heart. Should surgery become necessary, your cardiologist will refer you to a cardiac surgeon, will follow up after surgery and continue to monitor your condition.

It’s a good practice to look for a cardiologist who’s affiliated with or certified by the American Heart When your primary care doctor or the emergency room refers you to a cardiologist, you will undoubtedly have a great deal of anxiety and concern. Your cardiologist should take the time to explain what your heart problems are, the factors that have lead to your heart disease, how to best diagnose and treat your problems and what to expect in the future because heart disease is a lifelong process. You and your cardiologist need to work together as a team and good communication is a key part to putting together an effective treatment plan.

Association or the American College of Cardiologists. But do keep in mind that there’s no standardized referral program for cardiologists through the AHA. Board certification lets you know a cardiologist spent additional years after medical school being supervised in their practice, passed a strenuous written exam, and successfully passes periodic re-certification requirements. A board certified cardiologist adheres to a certain level of cardiovascular care and puts in the extra time to stay abreast of the latest technology, with continuing education in their field. There are a few different types of cardiologists. A non-invasive cardiologist examines

|| JjAaNnU uA a R Yr y2 0 22 0 12 1

patients and orders tests, such as a stress test or electrocardiogram, to diagnose, treat, and prevent heart problems. A non-interventional cardiologist performs the same exams and tests and can also perform minor operations, such as catherization. An interventional cardiologist undergoes one to three years of additional training after the three-year residency, and can perform more advanced surgeries, such as valve repairs, atheroectomy (plaque removal), balloon angioplasty, and mesh stent placement to relieve blockages. Most of their time is spent in the hospital, with some office hours for follow-up and consultation. Lastly, an electrophysiology cardiologist studies the electrical stimulus to the heart, looking for irregular heartbeats and other problems that could cause cardiac arrest. They also perform tests such as an echocardiogram (EKG), a painless, non-invasive test that uses sound waves to view an image of the heart. Ask your primary care physician to steer you toward a cardiologist who’s experienced with your specific condition or who specializes in the treatment you need, having dedicated additional time studying your exact heart problem and garnered experience in treating it. Fortunately, innovative developments in cardiology care are happening every day. Look for a cardiology practice that’s known for its innovative and progressive approach, pioneering the latest treatments for heart disease and heart management. You also want to choose a cardiologist who places an emphasis on proactive wellness care, heading off problems before they occur. Look for a practice that offers extensive diagnostic and preventative tools, such as heart rhythm assessments, tilt table testing, carotid doppler ultrasounds, aortic duplex ultrasound, heart halter, event monitoring, lipid and cholesterol management, and more. Once you find a forward-thinking cardiologist with a stellar track record, you’ll have a partner in your journey toward optimum heart health —for life.

WHEN WE HAVE AN URGENT, BUT NON-CRITICAL NEED FOR CARE, AN URGENT CARE FACILITY MAY BE THE BEST CHOICE. Terms such as convenient, immediate, urgent, and walk-in care all refer to this class of medical facility. They’re designed to serve people whose healthcare needs range between illnesses and aches, and emergencies such as threats to life, limb, or eyesight that we normally associate with an ambulance ride to a traditional hospital emergency room.

“When choosing an urgent care facility, find out how long it’s been in operation and how long the providers have been practicing there. Longevity means they are familiar with you and your family. Also, a facility that has two providers per shift allows them to spend more time with you and offers the patients more choices, such as a male or female provider.”

Dr. Jeffery Fisher MANSFIELD URGENT CARE & FAMILY MEDICINE

The challenge is in choosing the right one. A facility’s proximity is key when you or a loved one is suffering from, say, an unusually high fever or a kitchen knife accident, but there is more to consider than drive time. It’s a good idea to put a moment’s thought into where you might turn for help in the event of a non-life-threatening emergency. Waiting to choose the right facility until you’re in need of immediate attention could turn the decision into a frantic Google Maps drill with uncertain results. So how do we choose during normal moments of peace and quiet what we won’t want to take precious time to research when our health and safety may be at risk? Accreditations are a good place to start. According to the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), there are two criteria by which urgent care facilities are recognized. The first is the USAOA

Accreditation Program. The other certification program recognized by the UCAOA is the Certified Urgent Care (CUC) program. The CUC is used to recognize urgent care facilities that meet all the criteria that are standard in the United States for demonstrating an urgent care facility’s accessibility to all patients, the capability of the staff to treat a wide range of injuries and illnesses, and the clinic’s capacity to respond to an outbreak of disease in the local community. These facilities operate with a sense of, yes, urgency. It’s for this reason that it might take a few tries to pin a person down on the phone long enough to get the details. With a little patience and an extra portion of politeness, you can find someone with a few free minutes to provide you with the answers you’re looking for. To start with, ask about the certifications mentioned in this article. You might also inquire about services a clinic provides above and beyond primary care, such as occupational, physical, or weight-loss therapy. Ask about standard rates, supported insurance programs, average wait times, and if they have any limitations on care that’s provided. If you get a moment, check them out in person and get a feel for what the process looks like. An urgent care facility can be a nice alternative to a preplanned appointment with a doctor or a more involved trip to the ER. Make sure you have one in mind in case somebody has an exceptionally bad day.

A SIGHT FOR

sore eyes

S E V E N WAY S T O P R O T E C T YO U R E Y E S F R O M T O O MUCH SCREEN TIME BY A N N E T T E BROOKS

orking from home, Zoom meetings, online lessons, binge-watching a show on your tablet or laptop, playing games on your smartphone — it all adds up to lots of digital screen time. While it’s a way of life in our digital age, especially during the pandemic, excessive screen time without breaks and taking other precautions can negatively affect our eyes.

W

Looking at a screen for extended periods can cause computer vision syndrome, with symptoms that include dry eyes, blurred vision, and headaches. And according to the National Center of Biotechnology Information, increased digital screen time can be associated with the onset and progression of myopia (nearsightedness). Research also shows that the blue light emitted from backlit devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets could lead to macular degeneration, a major cause of blindness. Give your eyes some much-needed TLC by taking steps to help protect them from excessive digital screen time. Your eyes will thank you! Take a 20-20-20 break. The American Academy of Ophthalmolog y recommends allowing your eyes to relax by shifting them every 20 minutes to look at an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Set a timer as a reminder, and why not take the opportunity to get up, stretch, and walk around for a minute as you do this. Take a more extended break. In addition to the 20-20-20 rule, take 15-minute breaks after every two hours you spend behind the screen. Stand up, walk away from your screen, and give your eyes a rest. Call a colleague or friend. Look out the window or step outside. Not only will your eyes benefit from this, so will your mind and body. Reduce screen glare. Use a matte screen filter if your computer screen has a lot of glare.

92

LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET

|

january 2021

Distance matters. Sit at an arm’s length away from the screen and position it so your eyes gaze slightly downward. Keep the room humidified, use artificial tears if need be (consult with your physician first), and make sure drafts from fans, air conditioners, heaters, and other sources are not drying out your eyes. Adjust your lighting. Did you know your eyes have to work harder if a computer screen is brighter than the surrounding light? Help reduce eye strain by increasing the lighting in your room and adjusting the screen’s brightness to match the level of light around it. Increasing the contrast on the screen may also help reduce eye strain. Blink. When staring at a digital screen, many of us don’t blink as often as we usually would. Blinking spreads tears evenly over your eyes, keeping them from getting dry and irritated. On average, humans blink around 15 to 20 times per minute. When reading a screen, blinking can reduce by half this amount. If you take these measures while using a digital screen and your eyes still feel dry and irritated, or if you experience eye pain or your vision is affected, see an eye doctor. To make sure your symptoms are not a sign of an underlying condition.

grinding is usually associated with stress, anxiety, tension, and even concentration. At night, grinding is sometimes related to hyperactivity, sleep apnea, acid reflux and can also appear as a side effect of certain medications used to treat depression. EFFECTS ON YOUR ORAL HEALTH // In addition to cracked or chipped teeth, stress and grinding can potentially affect your oral health in other ways. • TMJ disorder – TMJ stands for temporomandibular joints, located just below your ears and used to move the lower jaw. Symptoms of the disorder include pain, along with clicking and popping when the lower jaw moves. • Gum disease – Researchers at Tufts University studying the link between stress and gum disease have shown that when the body is experiencing stress, its ability to manufacture immune cells to protect against bacteria is compromised. That situation, in turn, allows bacteria in the mouth to thrive, which can lead to inflammation of the gums and periodontal disease.

hen you think of the common causes of dental problems, the usual suspects include failing to brush and floss daily, the lack of regular, professional dental care, and large quantities of sugary foods and sodas. But in addition to these well-known sources of dental issues, we should also add teeth grinding.

W

If you frequently clench your jaws during the day or wake up with sensitive teeth, a sore jaw, or a headache, you may be suffering from bruxism — grinding, clenching, or gnashing of your teeth, a common condition that affects 1 in 3 adults in the daytime and 1 in 10 at night. TREATMENT OPTIONS // If you’re suffering from the side effects of stress and teeth grinding, you should seek professional help, and treatment options include the following. • Nightguard – Your dentist may outfit you with a nightguard, like a retainer, to protect the teeth. But it doesn’t stop the grinding, and you’ll need to address the underlying causes of the problem. • Medications – Muscle relaxers can help relax the jaw and stop nighttime grinding. If you’re taking antidepressants, your doctor may prescribe a different medication that doesn’t come with the risk of bruxism. • Behavioral modification – Individuals suffering from extreme stress and teeth grinding might seek help from a psychologist or other professional counselor and get assistance with stress handling and relaxation training, including biofeedback. A FINAL WORD // Specialists at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles studying stress and bruxism have found that they often affect individuals with ambitious, rigidly organized, proactive, type-A personalities. Dr. David Scott, a Cedars Sinai clinical psychologist, says that rather than getting his patients to reinvent themselves, he asks them to separate teeth grinding from the stresses that cause it. “It’s not about changing who you are or eliminating all sources of stress from life,” he says, “but learning how to leave your body out of it.”

TUTORING DOS AND DON'TS

GET SMART CAN TUTORING HELP YOUR CHILD? BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

As Monica watched her son, James, happily settle into completing his homework, it was hard to believe this was the same kid who, three months earlier, was having nightly homework meltdowns. Thanks to the intervention of a well-chosen tutor, James' grades rebounded, and his self-esteem and good attitude returned.

IT MIGHT BE TIME FOR A TUTOR IF: • Your child is falling behind or has gaps in basic concepts for their grade level. • Homework is a battle, or your child gets overly anxious before a test. • The teacher is recommending they repeat the grade.

• Mathnasium — Customized face-toface math tutoring to help kids in grades K-12 learn math through lessons and tutorials. • SpiderSmart — Individualized support in reading and writing for students of all ages.

• Your child’s self-esteem is beginning to wane because of poor grades.

• Sylvan Learning Centers — Personalized college and test prep, tutoring, homework support, online or in person.

• You’re switching to a more academically challenging school and need to get them caught up with their new classmates.

• Varsity Tutors — Free live online classes and study resources with one-on-one tutoring and at-home learning solutions.

• Your high school sophomore and junior wants to prepare for the ACT or SAT.

• Chegg.com — A web-based company that offers educational services for college and high school students.

TUTORING RESOURCES • Learning RX — One-on-one brain training center focuses on the underlying skills critical for learning and performance.

• TestMasters — Classroom, online, private, or custom group courses specializing in technical subjects such as engineering, graduate-level courses, and college admissions.

• Multisensory Reading Center — Online dyslexia therapy and tutoring for anyone challenged by dyslexia.

• Talk to your child enthusiastically about the impact tutoring is going to have, and how well you know they're going to do. If you treat tutoring as a struggle, that's how they'll see it. If you look at it as a great opportunity, your good attitude will rub off. • Choose your tutor carefully. Look for a certified teacher who'll keep learning engaging and fun, be liberal with praise, and work with the goal of your child's independence in mind. • Meet with the tutor ahead of time. Discuss any concerns you have and ask how they'll address them. • Talk to your child's classroom teacher to make sure you know their deficiencies and ask for feedback on any improvement once tutoring has begun. • If your child plays sports, try to arrange for tutoring that won't interfere with their participation. A physical outlet can benefit academic success, especially if your child excels at a sport which bolsters their self-esteem. • Keep the tutoring consistent and take it seriously. Don't cancel a session unless absolutely necessary. • Don't put too much pressure on your child. Progress is best when it's slow and steady. • Show enthusiasm for any progress. Celebrate improvement and let them know you admire how hard they're working. Lastly, examine your motives. Does your child really need help? If a "B" or "C" is your child's personal best, they need to know you're proud of their achievements. The goal of tutoring is to empower students to help themselves and guide them to become independent, successful, and happy learners.

We’ve put together a few ideas for you to consider when planning your vacation in 2021. Although these tips should inspire you to embrace the vacation lifestyle once again, ultimately, resuming travel will come down to the level of risk that makes you feel comfortable.

PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES Let’s start with how you travel to and from your vacation destination. Choices include a personal vehicle (road trip, anyone?), flying, or via train. Driving your vehicle is relatively economical with low gas prices, and from a nostalgic perspective, road trips are the stuff memories are made from. Remember, you’ll be stopping for bathroom breaks and to eat along the way. And depending on the distance, you may need to spend a night or two in a hotel. Be prepared to use your masks, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant products. The airlines are doing most everything possible to put safety and cleanliness at the forefront of your travel experience. Most, if not all, use HEPA air filters that capture around 99.9% of airborne viruses and bacteria. As a COVID-19 scaredy-cat, I use an N95 mask when flying, limit food and beverage intake, and wipe down my armrests and tray tables with virus-killing disinfectant wipes. Socially distance in the terminals as directed and follow their mask-wearing regulations. The idea of taking the train is both romantic and nostalgic, don’t you think? When speed getting to and from your destination isn’t your goal, consider the train instead of flying. And compared to driving, the train enables you to watch beautiful stretches or our country to pass by as you relax. Follow the train operators’ COVID-19 guidelines. Wear a mask and try to socially distance as much as possible, especially when boarding and deboarding.

SAFE TRAVELS

WHERE TO STAY The good news is that you have a few options to choose from.

VACATION RENTALS – From condos and apartments to beach cottages and mountain cabins, vacation rentals are great whether you have the whole family with you, are on a girls’ getaway, spending time as a couple, or traveling on your own. The beauty of vacation rentals is that they’re self-contained and limit interactions with others. You can relax, cook meals together, and hang out in a homelike environment. This reduces the likelihood that you’ll go out to do everything, which ultimately minimizes risk. Look for places that have a sanitization process, but just to be extra safe, thoroughly wipe down surfaces with a virus-killing disinfectant the first thing when you arrive. Don’t rule out hotel rooms. Major hotel brands have implemented new safety and cleaning precautions, and residence-style hotel rooms offer some of the conveniences and safety of a condo or apartment rental.

FO U R S A F E T R AV E L T I P S FO R 2 0 2 1 1. If there’s one tip to follow, it’s don’t let your guard down. It’s easy to slip into “vacation mode” without considering the COVID-19 safety issues. We’ll be able to be less guarded someday, hopefully soon, but now is not the time. 2. Avoid COVID-19 hotspots and traveling to areas with infection spikes. This could mean making last minutes changes to your travel plans unless you choose locations less likely to become epicenters. 3. Be prepared. Bring along virus-killing disinfectant sprays and wipes, plenty of single-use or washable masks, N95 masks if you think you may end up in a crowded area, generous amounts of hand sanitizer, and UV wands to disinfect smaller areas and phones. Sure, we know this sounds overboard, but as they say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” 4. Check if your destination has requirements or restrictions for travelers, especially if you’re coming from out of state. Restrictions can change quickly. Even if there were no restrictions when you made your plans, there might be when you’re ready to leave.

GO RV-ING – RV’ing is a great way to see the country in your personal mobile motel, explore nature, and enjoy the great outdoors. Don’t worry if you don’t own one. It’s easy to rent an RV for the trip, and DIY sanitization is quick and easy. Compared to driving a car or SUV, you may have to stop less often for food or bathroom breaks, but RV travel usually means staying at RV parks overnight and getting gas and supplies at other public places, which may put you and those with you in the RV in close contact with others. GLAMP IT – Glamping is where “stunning nature meets modern luxury,” according to Glamping.com. We call it luxury camping, and naturally, due to the pandemic, glamping is enjoying an uptick in America. Glamping “rooms” or structures include pods, bell tents, tent cabins, tree houses, safari tents, tipis, vintage caravans and trailers, and yurts. Many, if not most glamping retreats have implemented new contactless cleaning procedures and guest check-ins. But as with a hotel room or a vacation rental, you’ll want to do a DIY sanitization when you first enter your glamped out vacation abode.
