March calendar to be outside soaking in the wonders of spring. Whether you live on a sprawling ranch or a downtown condo—or anything in between—springtime in Arlington/Mansfield/Grand Prairie is a new beginning—for the trees and the animals—and for us. In the words of King Solomon in Song of Solomon 2:11, “For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come.” March is also the time for our annual Top Doc section. I can’t help but notice how many lists of the nation’s top medical specialists include doctors from our area. We’re truly blessed to have these dedicated men and women living and working among us. You may see your favorite doctor on our list of outstanding healthcare providers or might find the doctor you’ve been looking for. Happy spring, from Living Magazine to you!

Letters

from our

Mayors

MAYOR DAVID COOK

MANSFIELD

MAYOR RON JENSEN

GRAND PRAIRIE

Most people don’t know that Mansfield is the “Pickle Capital of Texas,” and maybe the world. Best Maid Pickles got their start here in 1926 when Mildred Dalton and her husband Jessie began planting and harvesting their own pickles to make Mildred’s famous sandwich spread. They had such success growing their own pickles, they began packing and selling them in their store. The Dalton family is still making Best Maid a household name. And every March, Mansfield and thousands of others celebrate this unique history with The World’s Only St. Paddy’s Pickle Parade and Palooza. This community-driven event is now in its seventh year and is one of the most popular festivals in Texas. Historic Downtown Mansfield is decked out in green for a family-friendly day of music, food, fun and, most of all, a huge parade. Check out all the details and the schedule of events at www.pickleparade.org and then join us for the fun on March 16 -17, 2018.

Grand Prairie is taking a Texas A&M tradition and applying it at the municipal level in March by hosting the city’s first Big Event on March 24, a city wide volunteer day. On this day volunteers will be matched with service projects as a way to build unity in the community, share thanks and serve others. Volunters may sign up and residents may submit job requests through March 1 through the city’s website at gptx.org/bigevent. All jobs will be vetted to make sure volunteers will be able to complete them in four hours. We will match volunteers with projects, notify everyone, have a big pep rally to kick it all off, then lunch to end it and invite everyone back out for a great free concert for all at EpicCentral Park Saturday night, featuring Vocal Trash and Memphis Soul. This will be our first event on our new Grand Lawn and Amphitheater in EpicCenter Park. If you are so inclined, join us!

MAYOR JEFF WILLIAMS

ARLINGTON

There’s no doubt that Arlington is a family-friendly town. Whether you’re a parent with young kids taking advantage of our libraries and public parks, a retiree enjoying our senior centers and abundance of volunteer opportunities, or anyone in between, there’s a lot to keep you busy and connected in The American Dream City. A great example of our emphasis on family was last month’s Family Reunion Planning Workshop. Throughout a jam-packed morning, residents learned how to save money on their reunion, locate the right lodging, build an itinerary, and left with checklists and timelines for planning an event that’s fun for every age group. This month promises to be another good time for families with Youth Art Month at Arlington Museum of Art, family-friendly programs at Arlington Music Hall, dog parties and dog weddings at the new Rush Creek Dog Park, educational presentations at the UTA planetarium, mobile pet adoption events, and so much more. Why not get your family out and about and make some forever memories this month in The American Dream City? And lastly, our hats off to the nearly 70 Arlington ISD students who recently signed or will sign with a college athletic program. We can’t wait to watch you make us proud on the field and court.

ON THE COVER Braces! Not just for Kids!

Hildebrand Orthodontics! JED HILDEBRAND, DDS, MSD BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN MARIE

T

hings are gearing up at Hildebrand Orthodontics. With his all-American, surfer style, I suppose it was only natural that Dr. Jed Hildebrand would partner up with Epic Water Park for 2018! From the beginning, this dynamic orthodontic office has provided state-ofthe-art care that’s patient-centered in an atmosphere that’s inviting, comfortable, and most of all, FUN. It’s a place where young children and older adults come to get their beautiful smiles from Dr. Jed Hildebrand. Dr. Hildebrand and his dentist wife, Kim, have always had a passion for their community and bettering the lives of those around them. Those who know them know they’re always on the lookout for ways to help keep our Arlington community healthy. So, this summer, as you and your family float down the lazy river at Epic Water Park, you might notice Dr. Hildebrand’s surfer/survivor logo on the inner tubes. And don’t be surprised if you see Dr. H there surfing the waves himself or splashing around with Kim and their two little ones, Kai and Liv.

THE PLACE TO BE Hildebrand Orthodontics, is a bustling place. A cool, boutique-style practice, it resembles a casual hangout with its beach-themed murals and bright, two-story open, sky-lighted treatment bays. The painted ceiling reflects a blue, tropical sky and the waiting room includes 12 free-play video games, iPads for patients to use during visits. There’s even an in-office coffee bar for parents. (Although with a “nowait” policy, no one is hanging around for long.) And Dr. H is there himself laughing, sharing, and getting to know each of his patients.

BRACES—NOT JUST FOR KIDS Although Dr. Hildebrand prefers to see a patient for the first time at age seven, many of his patients are adults who either never had braces as a child or who had braces but didn’t wear their retainer long enough. No worries- with Invisalign clear tooth aligners and new clear braces, he can straighten your teeth, and no one will ever notice. “Braces go

20

“Braces go on during your first appointment and sometimes the day of your free consult and big changes to start looking great happen in the next few weeks.” on during your first appointment and sometimes the day of your free consult and big changes to start looking great happen in the next few weeks” Dr. Hildebrand said.

STRAIGHTER TEETH FASTER Dr. Hildebrand employs the latest, high-tech thermal wires which respond to the temperature of the mouth allowing him to straighten teeth faster than ever before and with far less discomfort to patients. “We’re excited to be using this new technology,” Dr. Hildebrand said. “Throughout your treatment, we’ll change out your wires to these new flexible wires that leave your teeth less sore than before. No more tightening of braces and no more bands on back teeth, no old school treatment with head gear either, which means far less risk of cavities and embarressment. We’re also doing great things with new mini braces, the smallest braces on the market. It’s exciting to watch the transformation of a patient’s smile with this new technology that cuts treatment time down by six months.”

GIVING BACK REACHING OUT Dr. Hildebrand enjoys participating in

Christian dental missionary work in Mexico and has traveled overseas to dental clinics and served orphans in Cambodia. With his love of extreme sports and family, he can often be found skiing, surfing or just playing sports with his kiddos at the park. Dr. Hildebrand was a contestant on the hit CBS reality TV show Survivor V: Thailand in the fall of 2002. He has appeared on numerous TV shows afterwards and giving talks to local youth and church groups, including MTV’s TRL, The Carolyn Rhea Show, CBS’ The Early Show, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, E!, Inside Edition, and The Ticket talk radio show. He’s opening up extra spots this spring in his schedule for children, teens and adults that are interested in braces and Invisalign. Hildebrand Orthodontics is located on Hwy I-20 between Cooper and Bowen in south Arlington. Call (817) 468-4141 to schedule your complementary braces consultation with Dr. Jed today. (817) 468-4141 2200 Interstate 20 W Suite 100 Arlington, Texas 76017 HildebrandOrtho.com

Dr. Hildebrand has been featured in D Magazine, Texas Monthly, Reader’s Digest, Mansfield Now, Mansfield Child, In Touch Magazine and TV Guide. His awards range from Top Orthodontist to Best Orthodontist as nominated by publication readers and his colleagues. 21

FRUIT OF THE VINE

BY DOROTHEA SHIELDS

G

race is a word we hear and use so often that many of us don’t even consider its meaning or its work in our lives anymore.

In some ways, it’s become a cliché, a redundancy that floats around in our vocabulary inoculating us to its power in our lives. It’s a word that has been overused, misused, and misunderstood. Grace is not just a word destined for a plaque on the wall, nor is it a free ticket to sin or do whatever you want. Grace is power. It is supernatural, and a fresh perspective on

grace will rejuvenate your walk with the Lord. I had come to a place where I didn’t consider grace too much. It had become a cliché to me. But as I began to pray for the coming year, the Lord breathed the word grace into my heart, awakening me to consider this supernatural phenomenon once again. If you’ve gone through my bible study, Fitted For Grace, then you already know that grace moves well beyond unmerited favor. Salvation by God’s unmerited favor towards us is expressed as grace (Ephesians 2:8-9).

abundance, but we have to learn how to walk in it, how to receive it, and how to apply it to our life circumstances. Sometimes God’s grace comes along and sustains through tragedy and stressful situations. In those seasons, sometimes it is grace that keeps air flowing in and out of our lungs, causes us to put one foot in front of the other, or merely to get out of bed. It is working in us, and at the time, we don’t recognize it as His grace, but in hindsight, it becomes clear. Other times, His grace is available, but we have to choose to walk in it and to be obedient to the leading of His Spirit in our lives. Life is filled with opportunities to either go it alone or press into Him and receive the grace. His heart, as always, is to shower us with Himself and His abilities:

“Yes, God is more than ready to overwhelm you with every form of grace, so that you will have more than enough of everything – every moment and in every way. He will make you overflow with abundance in every good thing you do.” 2 Corinthians 9:8 TPT The underlying key to a life of grace is a life of pursuit of God Himself!

“And without faith living within us it would be impossible to please God. For we come to God in faith knowing that he is real and that he rewards the faith of those who give all their passion and strength into seeking him.” Hebrews 11:6 TPT

However, if we never go past the wonder of our salvation to live an abundant life of love and power, fulfilling the desires of God’s heart towards us, then we have shortchanged ourselves by never experiencing the powerful side of grace. Grace empowers us to do what only we can do when He is living inside of us. He enables us to walk with Him, to accomplish what He has set before us and to live a Godly lifestyle. I believe His grace will propel us forward, moving us closer and closer to our destinies and Him. As we work with grace, we are working with the Lord. As with all of God’s attributes and promises, grace is available in

Consider the freshness of every form of grace being poured out upon you day-by-day and moment-by-moment. We enter every year not fully knowing what lies ahead, but we are assured that God’s never-ending grace is awaiting us no matter what. His grace will empower us to handle circumstances beyond our natural abilities to process, whether they are challenging, victorious, overwhelming or tragic. Will you join me in making this a year of a deliberate pursuit of God’s presence and the application of grace in your life? Facebook: Anchored To Jesus with Dorothea Shields Web: AnchoredToJesus.com

INTRODUCING POSH PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY WITH DR. BEN GBULIE BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

B

en Gbulie had an experience few in his field ever will, when he served as lead plastic surgeon in a procedure to separate a set of conjoined twins. During the 18-hour surgery, Dr. Gbulie worked with a team of dozens of doctors as they separated 12-month-old Nigerian girls named Miracle and Testimony, conjoined at the pelvis from birth. “That was a humbling experience,” he said. “And watching them develop since then has been amazing.”

Since he was a boy Uzoma has wanted to become a doctor. “I had an older cousin who was a doctor,” he said. “I looked up to him and he inspired me to follow in his footsteps. But, I didn’t fall in love with medicine in medical school. I fell in love with surgery. I realized I loved the technical knowledge required to perform surgical operations. Beyond that, I relished the challenge of solving complex problems and not having only one approach to each one.” It was this passion that led him to his chosen field of plastic surgery which he says allows him to satisfy his creative yearnings in the fields of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and to make a real difference in the lives of his patients. The internet is flush with gushing reviews from those patients, who find in Dr. Gbulie more than a doctor. They find a friend who

I’m always looking to master new techniques and stay on the cutting edge of plastic surgery.” Dr. Gbulie is board-certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He completed his medical education at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos graduating in the top 5% of his class. He underwent residency training in general surgery at the prestigious Howard University Hospital in Washington DC, where he received the Surgery Intern of the Year award. He underwent fellowship training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Saint Louis University Hospital and craniofacial surgery at the University of Tennessee in Memphis and Necker Hospital in Paris, France. Dr. Gbulie is certified both by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Although a day off is a rare thing for Dr. Gbulie, when he does have some free time he enjoys decompressing with a good movie or playing soccer on his Xbox. “I’m very competitive,” he admitted. He also loves to dance to Soca music, which he describes as fast-paced dance music from the island of Trinidad and Tobago. “My wife and three kids are very active, and I love to hang out with them on trips,” he said. “We especially love going to the beach and theme parks for family vacations.” Dr. Gbulie’s goals in life are simple. “Personally, I strive to be a good, honest, and hardworking citizen and to provide for my family. In my practice, I try to deliver excellent care to all my patients and treat them as if they were family.” He has also volunteered his time mentoring younger plastic surgeons. 2975 East Broad Street, 200 Mansfield, Texas 76063 (682) 518-8619

hen “America’s Favorite Fisherman,” Jimmy Houston, was diagnosed with cataracts, his doctor sent him to KE Eye Centers of Texas for the LifeStyle Lens procedure. “The care and reception by all the staff was excellent. From the moment we walked in, we knew that Dr. Parker had sent us to the right place.”

JIMMY’S STORY

“In the last year, my vision became so poor I had to wear reading glasses to see anything up close, and I couldn’t see very well at a distance either.” Jimmy’s optometrist diagnosed him with cataracts and arranged for him to go to KE Eye Center in Arlington. “My LifeStyle Lens procedure went smoothly,” he said. “I was so pleased with the care I received and the results have been incredible. They first did the

LifeStyle Lens replacement and after, I could read anything…I mean anything. I was grabbing bottles of shampoo in the shower and reading the tiniest print on them, just because I could.” They also performed laser cataract surgery to help with Jimmy’s distance vision. “Now I can shoot a bow better than ever… shoot a rifle better than ever. My casting has come back to the way it was when I was a kid. They did a remarkable job.”

EXPANDING PRACTICE

Now with offices in Arlington, Plano, Mount Pleasant, Dallas, and Gun Barrell City, and coming soon to Southlake, KE Eye Centers of Texas employs hand-selected ophthalmological surgeons and staff and offers a full menu of cutting-edge ophthalmological services from routine eye exams to blade-free Lasik, advanced cataract surgery, dysfunctional lens syndrome (over-40 vision) treatment, BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

CONCIERGE CARE

KE Eye Centers of Texas surgeons and staff take pride in offering patient-centered concierge care. Longtime patients and newcomers alike are treated like family. The doctors and staff take time getting to know each patient, educating them about their many, state-of-the-art treatment options, then partnering with them to choose the best treatment option and lenses for their lifestyle.

I was grabbing bottles of shampoo in the shower and reading the tiniest print on them, just because I could.” ADVANCED CATARACT TREATMENT

Previously necessitating a lengthy recovery, cataract surgery has progressed to a sophisticated laser procedure requiring only a tiny incision to remove the cataract followed by lens implantation. The LenSx laser and LifeStyle lens which are implanted during cataract surgery are safe and precise. The procedure is pain-free and non-invasive, and recovery time is minimal. In most cases, patients are able to see clearly with these lenses with reduced dependency on—or completely without— glasses or contacts.

CUSTOM LIFESTYLE LENSES

KE Eye Centers of TX offers a variety of LifeStyle Lens procedures for patients who live active lifestyles and want to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or bifocals. LifeStyle Lenses allow KE Eye Center doctors to customize each procedure to a patient’s individual vision needs and active

lifestyles. So, whether you love to cycle, play tennis, swim or enjoy a good book, there’s a procedure tailor-made for you. For patients with an active lifestyle who also spend time at the computer or enjoy reading, the ReSTOR Lens corrects for multiple distances.

HOW IT WORKS

The ReSTOR Lens uses “apodized diffractive” technology, which functions like two lenses in one, allowing for near, intermediate, and distance vision correction. In clinical trials, the ReSTOR Lens eliminated the need for corrective eyewear in over 80% of patients who received the implants in both eyes. And 94% of patients involved in the clinical trials reported they’d elect to have the procedure again. rs. Eddie Mairura and John Harris were both unmistakably drawn toward a career as an orthopaedic surgeon but that drawing looked very different for the two men. As Dr. Mairura recalled, “During my second year of medical school, my uncle was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the pelvis. I took him to his appointments at the Mayo Clinic and there I met his treating orthopaedic surgeon, Michael Yaszemski. I was intrigued by his bedside manner, his compassion, level of knowledge, and communication skills. Dr. Yaszemski kept in touch with me and offered me the opportunity to work in his lab and perform research. It was during this time that I decided to become an orthopaedic surgeon; to one day help people with musculoskeletal issues the way Dr. Yaszemski helped my uncle.”

As for John Harris, he took up woodworking, to relieve stress during med school. As he related, “I was already drawn toward medicine, because I had a desire to help change people’s lives with new and exciting medical technology. But my interest in orthopaedic surgery began when I realized I liked treating injured patients more than I do sick patients. Then I really fell in love with the field of orthopaedics from the first case I saw that involved drills, screwdrivers, and all kinds of tools just like the ones in my garage. It was fascinating. And I was hooked.”

FULL RANGE OF SERVICES

At their bustling Texas Orthopaedic Surgical Associates in Mansfield, they provide a complete range of orthopaedic services, specializing in adult joint reconstruction, sports medicine and athletic injuries, shoulder and knee arthroscopic surgery, trauma, foot and ankle surgery, surgery of the shoulder and upper extremity, physical therapy, and imaging services, as well as fracture and soft tissue injury treatment.

MEET THE BONE DOCTORS

When not on the job, Dr. Mairura enjoys spending his free time with his family and his significant other, Selina. “We attend church together on weekends and are constantly making new friends in the DFW area,” he said. “Being from Minnesota, I enjoy the lake and when the weather allows, I like to go speed boating and tubing at Joe Pool Lake. I enjoy working out, watching sporting events either on TV or in person, notably NFL and NBA. We enjoy travelling as well having enjoyed beautiful cities and countries like Nairobi- Kenya, Maldives, and Dubai in the last several months.” Dr. Harris still enjoys woodworking and building everything from dining tables to beds to buffets. “I’m a huge fan of bass

fishing and really enjoy hunting when I can get around to it,” he said. “I’m also a huge sports fan, first and foremost following the Arkansas Razorbacks (alma mater) followed by the Dallas Cowboys who are due any year now for a new ring. But my true passion is spending time with my wonderful wife and our four children playing in the backyard, going to parks, wrestling, reading books, and rushing between hockey, baseball, and dance classes.”

ENRICHING OUR COMMUNITY

Both busy doctors find time to give of themselves to make the community a better place to live and work. Dr. Mairura is involved in community service outreach programs some of which are church-based and some from his prior connections from Minnesota. “I provide mentoring for some young adults I’ve met in church, allowing them to shadow and spend time with me during my clinic and surgery hours,” he said. “I also do guest lectures for an organization in Minnesota that seeks to help underserved young adults gain entry into college and advance their careers.” Dr. Harris and his wife are starting young teaching their kids (the oldest of which is seven) the importance of giving to the community. “We try to get our kids active in community service events especially around holidays when people really need to see people who care for them doing various activities such as the salvation army bell ringers, working soup kitchens, etc.,” he said. “Since we moved to the area last August, we’ve been on the lookout for ways to plug in.”

geons, they only consider surgery after all conservative options have been exhausted. “Advances in our field have been remarkable,” Dr. Harris said. “Many procedures that needed open surgery in the past, particularly in the shoulder, can be dealt with using less invasive arthroscopic techniques with excellent results.” But even with these less-invasive options, Drs. Harris and Mairura only discuss surgery with their patients as a last resort. Visit TheBoneDocs.com to find out more or to schedule a consultation.

Arlington Orthopedic Associates and The Joint Preservation Center Joseph M. Berman, MD

D

r. Joseph Berman’s 37-year medical practice experience in Arlington has opened up new opportunities for his patients. He and his staff of nurses and therapists are all members of The International Cartilage Repair Society. His office and Arlington Orthopedic Associates have been designated an international teaching facility by the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee and Orthopedic Surgery. As one of only a few designated centers of excellence in joint restoration in the US, the Joint Preservation Center, of which Dr. Berman is the founder and medical director, now has the opportunity to offer patients new research and techniques in joint maintenance and repair. Dr. Berman recently completed a select FDA study and trial of a new artificial meniscus implant – the NuSurface. One of only 10 centers in the USA to offer an artificial meniscus, the “C-shaped” shock absorber in the knee, for patients who’ve lost their medial meniscus. The device, easily implantable as an outpatient procedure, can save years of wear on the joint and decrease or significantly postpone the need for future surgery. Enrollment has now been completed and data is being collated to present to the FDA. This may be an exciting answer to the question many patients ask “what are you going to put back in” after the medial meniscus is removed.

Having completed one study, Dr. Berman has embarked on another FDA study. Using natural sea coral plugs, the study will show that articular cartilage can be encouraged to grow toward the coral plugs. This is one the first studies of joint and cartilage restoration in which the FDA is allowing us to treat osteoarthritis. All studies prior have addressed injury to cartilage; this study may allow cartilage and bone growth which may preclude the indication of partial or total knee replacement. A potential exciting alternative to arthritis treatment. Lastly, there is genuine excitement about a very new option for patients with osteoarthritis. Available currently, Cryopreserved Human Amniotic Suspension Allograft has shown anti-inflammatory characteristics and may have the potential to help grow or stabilize articular cartilage through increase in natural growth factors. These stem cells, harvested from human placenta and umbilical cords, have shown some early evidence

that this injection may decrease progression of the arthritic disease. A single injection into your knee done in the office, can offer relief from painful arthritis for as much as a year. That is twice the usual amount of time that many of the viscosupplements (rooster comb) or other preparations can boast. It can be repeated yearly if indicated. Medicine is rapidly advancing. Many innovative techniques in arthroscopy and joint restoration did not exist when he started his practice. As new procedures become available, Dr. Berman is on the forefront of evaluating these options for his patients. He has created an informative website, JosephBermanMD.com, which informs patients about pathology, injury, and treatment of knee and shoulder problems. “The more the patient understands, the more realistic the expectations and the better the results,” he said. “The future of medicine in the USA will be dependent upon allowing many new and perhaps revolutionary techniques to become part of routine medical decisions.”

earing loss is a far more common health issue than most people realize. A diagnostic hearing evaluation by an audiologist can determine whether or not there’s need for intervention. “Some people have their hearing evaluated because their spouse or employer insisted on it,” said Dr. Lisa Fell, audiologist and co-owner of Audiology Experts in Arlington. “Others prolong the need for evaluation and endure daily life feeling that everyone mumbles or that family and social gatherings aren’t enjoyable anymore.” Many people never make the connection between these feelings and hearing loss. “But loss of hearing is not just a condition of aging or for those that enjoyed too much loud music in the 60s,” said Dr. Fell’s partner, Dr. Kristin Robbins. “It occurs much younger than the general public tends to realize.” “Untreated hearing loss can negatively impact daily communication and cognitive function and can lead to isolation and depression,” Dr. Fell said. It’s for that reason that she and Dr. Robbins devote themselves to providing thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis, and appropriate management of hearing loss for their patients. As doctors of audiology, Drs. Fell and Robbins offer immediate solutions for better and easier communication after the hearing has been evaluated. If the results indicate that hearing loss may be caused by a medical problem, they refer the patient for medical intervention. “But for a majority

make the appropriate recommendations for delivering the best success and happiest hearing aid wearers.”

Over the past two decades, Dr. Robbins and Fell have witnessed hundreds of success stories. Unfortunately, not everyone seeks or finds help for their hearing loss. “The reason may be affordability, false information, or too much confusion in advertising,” Dr. Robbins said. “That’s why patient education is such an important part of our job. We take the time to listen to the patient and explain to them and their loved one, their unique diagnosis, and how it can best be helped.”

In our modern world, there’s increased opportunity for ear-damaging elements such as medication, loud music through earbuds, environmental noise, and disease. To prevent hearing loss, Drs. Fell and Robbins recommend protection from exposure to loud noise, for extended periods of time. “And if hearing loss is suspected, get tested,” Dr. Robbins said. “If hearing instruments are recommended, then just do it.”

“There’s no cookie-cutter recipe, when it comes to hearing loss,” said Dr. Fell. “Each person needs something different. It’s our job to evaluate their condition and

erhaps like many people you’ve thought of dermatology as an aesthetic field rather than a medical one. But dermatologists like Dr. Jeannine Hoang and the staff of United Dermatology spend their days doing much more than treating acne, warts, and rashes. She is called upon daily to diagnose and treat serious—even life-threatening—skin conditions, such as skin cancer. But thanks to advancing technology, they’re also able to identify pre-cancerous areas and head cancer off, before it begins. “Skin cancer is highly treatable, when caught early,” Dr. Hoang said. “That makes routine skin checks paramount.” And because skin conditions are often indications of problems elsewhere in the body, Dr. Hoang has become increasingly interested in other aspects of healthcare, fitness, and nutrition. “I’m passionate about preventive medicine, anti-aging and learning about proactive approaches to maintain health and function through healthy lifestyle habits,” she said.

r. Jeremy Parcells spends his days changing lives for the better. “Who wouldn’t want to do that for a living,” he asked. His interest in medicine began in high school, when he was given the opportunity to observe surgery. “At that second I set my heart on becoming a surgeon,” he said. But it wasn’t until his surgical training that he recognized the potential for bariatric surgery to restore health and change lives. He was hooked! Bariatric weight-loss procedures include gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch and intragastric balloons can be the first step for many patients to a life free of obesity and obesity-related conditions. “It gives me joy to provide immediate solutions to my patients’ healthcare concerns; to see the results of my education and hard work and to know it’s improving someone’s day-today life,” he said. Dr. Parcells performs a wide range of procedures including hernia repair, gallbladder, anti-reflux, colorectal, and a full range of complex laparoscopic and robotic surgeries performed through a much smaller incision and resulting in shorter recovery times, less risk of infection, less scarring, less pain, and improved outcomes for his patients. Dr. Parcells is the highest-volume robotic surgeon in Tarrant County, extensively trained in the da Vinci Surgical System, offering his patients at Surgical Associates of Mansfield a whole new level of robotic surgery precision, as the system affords him a magnified, high-definition view of the operation and translates the tiniest movements

ujefa Vora grew up in Fort Worth, Texas with a father who fought end-stage renal disease for 25 years. While most of his friends idolized football players, astronauts, and movie stars, he was inspired by the doctors who cared for his father. “Dad lived a great life despite his illness,” Dr. Vora said. “The care his doctors gave him sparked my passion for caring for others, a fire that still burns in me today.” This early experience offered Dr. Vora a sense of empathy for his own patients and their families, and insight into the complicated mix of fear, hope, anxiety, and elation they go through during the treatment process. Dr. Vora’s primary care practice is broad in spectrum, providing care for patients from young adults all the way to geriatrics. He provides a special emphasis on care of the elderly, who have their own unique set of challenges and medical issues. These unique concerns are best handled by primary care physicians experienced in geriatric care. “Primary care is a partnership between physician and patient - a sacred relationship. I believe in working with patients and their families as a trusted partner and friend first, then a diagnostician, problem-solver, and care coordinator.”

As a partner, Dr. Vora believes strongly in working with families to pursue any and all reasonable and necessary treatment options for his patients. As an internist in primary care, Dr. Vora is particularly excited by diagnostics in medicine. “Internists are much like detectives analyzing symptoms and searching out underlying disease processes, isolating problems, and eventually figuring out a way to diagnose and treat patients. It’s very rewarding,” Dr. Vora said. A unique feature of Dr Vora’s practice is that he is known for following his patients through all

phases of their treatment. He maintains staff privileges at multiple facilities in the South Arlington and Mansfield area enabling him to assist his patients and their families navigate easily through our complex medical system. He treats them from the clinic to the hospital, following through rehabilitation, to the nursing home and, ultimately, through the entire spectrum of life. In an effort to better serve his patients, Dr Vora has been joined by Noelle Petri, a family nurse practitioner in his Arlington office. With her expertise and enthusiasm, Noelle brings a very positive energy to Dr Vora’s office. She has made it possible for Dr Vora to provide same-day appointments for his established patients and expanded well-woman services. In his free time, Dr. Vora enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife of eighteen years, Insiyah, and his almost four-year-old daughter, Mariya. “Mariya is everything good in my life,” he said. “Through her innocent eyes, I aspire to be the best father I can be.” The Voras enjoy gardening and raising chickens, traveling, skiing, hiking, and cycling. BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTO DEREK GOWER

Dr. Vora does a great deal of volunteer work through his church. He and his wife take yearly mission trips to third world countries in Asia and Africa. “It’s important for physicians to give back to their communities,” he says. “Without the support of my community, I wouldn’t be a doctor today.” He also donates a great deal of his time to his preferred hospital, Medical City Arlington, where he recently served as Chief of Staff. Dr. Vora graduated from Austin College with a degree in Mathematics, and did his Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. His true passion, however, was theater and communication arts. “Physicians, above all else, must be good communicators. We must listen and take direction from our patients, interpret our findings, and convey this to our patients in a clear, concise, and palatable fashion.” His passion for theater also blends naturally into his career. “Much like one of my heroes, Dr. Patch Adams,” Dr Vora says, “I believe that laughter is the best medicine. We entertain and we heal.”

urgery of the heart, lungs, and other areas of the chest aren’t what they used to be, thanks to pioneering surgeons like Darien Bradford. Procedures that used to see the patient’s sternums cracked open, hearts stopped momentarily, grotesque scarring, and long, arduous recoveries are now far less invasive. Recovery is shorter and less painful. And there are fewer complications and far greater success rates. Amazingly, Dr. Bradford now sees his surgery patients return to normal life, in as little as two weeks. “My goal is to improve each patient’s quality of life through advanced treatment and to do so in a way that minimizes pain, risks, and recovery time for them,” Dr. Bradford said. “Because each patient is unique, I work closely with my patients and their physicians to tailor a treatment program designed specifically for them.” Minimally-invasive surgery of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea is just one way Dr. Bradford is pioneering medicine advancements in Tarrant County. Dr. Bradford has established the architype of the patient-centric office, where patients and their families are afforded the time they need to ask any and all questions and never leave until they feel comfortable with the diagnosis and confident in a specialist who has spent so much of his own time studying and searching for the latest and best techniques and technologies, to make what could be a life-altering condition a mere bump in the road for them.

Their Hale Outdoor Learning Adventures (HOLA) program encourages Boston youth to lead active, healthy lifestyles, and resonates with Dr. Rodriguez because of his own lifelong love of the outdoors. “I loved exploring the outdoors when I was a kid,” explains Rodriguez. “Those carefree and adventurous days gave me confidence and helped make me the orthopedic surgeon I am today.” The HOLA program specifically addresses the “summer learning slide” that most adversely affects low-income students. It’s designed to encourage academic gains and develop social-emotional skills during the summer months so students are ready to begin the next grade in the fall. “Every child should be – and needs to be – outdoors,” emphasizes Rodriguez, “because exploring and enjoying nature provides an ideal opportunity to learn life lessons. I’m running this year’s Boston Marathon to give this opportunity to as many children as possible.”

“It is very gratifying,” says Dr. Rodriguez, “to help someone in pain be able to resume their active lifestyle.” Rodriguez may be doing the running, but everyone else can play a part in supporting this important cause. Dr. Rodriguez has offered to match dollar for dollar any amount donated, and stresses that donations of any size are welcome and greatly appreciated. “It’s easy to take outdoor activities for granted here in Texas. But in a large city like Boston, so many young girls and boys don’t have a chance to explore and experience nature. Simple activities such as fishing, swimming or just running around outdoors – they don’t get to do that. I hope by partnering with HOLA, we will be able to stimulate these kids to learn more.” Making a donation is as easy as visiting www. everydayhero.com and searching for Frank Rodriguez. Along with your financial support, you can leave a message of encouragement. PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEREK GOWER

When he’s not devoting his time to charitable interests, Dr. Rodriguez is dedicated to making life more enjoyable for those who suffer from hip, knee or shoulder pain. A fellowship trained and board certified orthopedic surgeon, in practice with Arlington Orthopedic Associates at both their Arlington and Mansfield clinics, he specializes in sports medicine and joint reconstruction. “It is very gratifying,” says Dr. Rodriguez, “to help someone in pain be able to resume their active lifestyle.” Whether you need help yourself with orthopedic pain, or want to help support a worthwhile charity, Dr. Rodriguez would love to hear from you. s a boy, Jeffrey Urieto was greatly influenced by his mom, who worked as a nurse in a developing country. “I remember going to her clinic and seeing her in her nurse uniform taking care of patients and interacting with doctors and nurses,” he said. “One of the doctors took me under his wing and mentored me at a young age and it bolstered my desire to go into medicine.” There was little doubt in anyone’s mind that young Jeffrey had the personality for medicine too. Naturally friendly and a born caregiver, his desire from an early age was to help people. That propensity only grew as he completed his schooling. “It might sound cliché,” he said, “but I’ve always enjoyed personal interactions. I figured medicine was a way to get more of it while also being part of a person’s healing process. I have since realized that I love being a part of the movement to promote prevention, before people need healing.” None of this is lost on Urieto’s patients who are the beneficiary of his gregarious and gentle bed-side manners and his insatiable quest for medical knowledge. As a primary care physician, he is there to meet the medical needs of every member of the family. Dr. Urieto begins each morning with a prayer for the new day ahead, for the patients he’ll encounter, and for his family. “I was taught to put first things first,” he said. “When I begin by giving my day to God—my thoughts, my hands, my words, my relationships—

Our aim is to provide a fun, non-threatening environment that allows children to actually enjoy coming to the dentist.” In fact, Drs. Sullivan and Wright hear from astonished parents all the time whose children ask when they can return to the dentist. That may be because of their philosophy of “treating the child, not the tooth”. Or it may be because both doctors look upon dentistry not merely as a job but as a ministry. “God calls us to serve others and to try to bring joy to other people,” Dr. Wright said. “Our obvious goal is to take care of our patients’ dental needs. But more importantly, we want to do it in a way that’s pleasant and easy for the child to tolerate.” Drs. Wright and Sullivan discuss diet, hygiene, and helpful hints to help parents keep their children cavity-free. When dental treatment is necessary, they provide the highest quality restorations and offer all levels of anxiety-reducing sedation. And

s a fellowship-trained Colon and Rectal surgeon extensively trained in minimally- invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery, Winston Chan has much to offer his patients, not the least of which is a shorter, less painful recovery after surgery. Through something called “enhance recovery after surgery” or ERAS, Dr. Chan can improve his patient surgical outcomes by approaching their care from a multi-disciplinary standpoint. This surgery-based program begins with a patient’s first surgery clinic visit. “A few of the important elements of a successful ERAS program include minimally-invasive surgery, multimodality pain control, and “pre-habilitation” for surgery (improving fitness, dieting, and overall health prior to surgery),” Dr. Chan said. The concept was first introduced at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center by Drs. Gary Alexander and Jeremy Parcells with the results being shorter length of hospital stay, improved pain control, increased patient satisfaction, and reduction of complications. “The Department of Surgery at Methodist Mansfield is proud to create an Enhance Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) committee and I’m proud to have been chosen co-chair of the program, because of my prior successful ERAS programs,” Dr. Chan said. “I began my career performing minimally-invasive or laparoscopic surgery which was revolutionary in its time,” Dr. Chan said. “But with robotic surgery, I am offering my patients suffering with conditions such as diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer,

Dr. David Rutledge admits he’s a bit of a tinkerer. “I like fixing thing and working with my hands,” he said. Whether he’s working on cars or fiddling with electronics, he enjoys thinking outside the box to find a solution. This problem-solving mindset made him a natural for a career as a surgeon and an early pioneer in minimally-invasive surgical procedures, including laparoscopic gallbladder surgery for digestive disorders. “Traditional open gallbladder surgery requires a longer recovery period and a good deal of pain,” he said. “With less-invasive laparoscopic surgery I can offer my patients a minimally-invasive procedure and a return to their normal activities within a week.” Through his affiliation with Surgical Associates of Mansfield, Dr. Rutledge has been able to go a step further with the da Vinci Surgical System, the leading robotic surgery platform which works in real time translating the surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the instruments at the surgical site, allowing Dr. Rutledge to perform major surgery through the smallest of incisions. He stresses the importance of proper preparation and says a large part of being a surgeon is the planning. “With the proper planning, the actual operation only takes a small percentage of my time,” he said. “Most important is the time I spend sitting face-to-face with the patient discussing their needs and expectation. It’s the thought process before and during the surgery that’s important, not just the wielding of a knife. It’s the planning and fact finding that ensure each patient receives the treatment I’d want for myself or a family member.”

r. Melissa Danchak is in the qualityof-life business… specifically, helping people hear the best they can and improving their quality of life business! At any age, hearing loss can interfere with relationships, education, work performance, and when left untreated, is proven to lead to social isolation and depression. More recently, many reports have also shown a direct link to an increase in cognitive decline. Dr. Danchak knows there is a stigma associated with wearing hearing aids. “There is a perception that hearing aids make you look older, or that they are cumbersome and difficult to use. Hearing devices today are smaller and more discreet than ever before. They are also extremely user friendly, and there are rechargeable options that eliminate the need to replace batteries. This makes them easier to use for those with dexterity issues. There is also confusion about what good hearing health care is. We believe that better hearing is an investment, not a transaction. The services that we provide reflect the patient first approach that we take in order to provide good hearing health care. We also participate with most major medical insurance companies and have partnerships with CareCredit and Wells Fargo Health Advantage to provide affordable financing rates.” At Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids, Dr. Danchak and her staff serve those with hearing loss in a caring and comprehensive manner. The patient journey to better hearing begins with a discussion about the hearing challenges someone is facing, followed by a thorough hearing evaluation. A live listening demonstration with hearing devices is then provided. Dr. Danchak’s experience tells her that this process

is the best way to help people realize the quality of life improvements they will have by addressing their hearing health care needs. With the many advancements in hearing device technology, Dr. Danchak is genuinely excited to provide patients with the live listening demonstration experience. “It is always a pleasure to watch as someone hears their loved one clearly from down the hallway for the first time in years or to hear the birds outside. It can be such an emotional experience for the entire family. The range of positive emotions and responses always reminds us of why we do what we do.” Dr. Danchak and her staff take time getting to know each patient, their family, their lifestyle, their hearing and communication needs. They know that an investment in better hearing is not just about the technology. That is why they provide a Complete Hearing Health Care Program. “This program is the most comprehensive in the North Texas area, and it includes all of the service people need to be successful with their investment BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY BY DEREK GOWER

in better hearing and with Kos/Danchak Audiology. It also includes free batteries for the lifetime of the devices!” The long-term relationships Kos/Danchak Audiology has forged with their patients and the patient centric approach they take is one reason that they have garnered over 50 five-star reviews on Google, Facebook and HealthyHearing. com. It is also why so many of their satisfied patients refer their friends and family to them each month. Dr. Danchak began working at KDA in 1997 and she has owned the practice since 2002. “Susanne Kos, the original owner of the practice, was very well respected and trusted by area physicians,” Danchak says. “Those physicians referred patients to her on a monthly basis and continue to refer to us today. This practice has been helping North Texans hear the best they can for over 32 years. Our goal is to live out our mission each day; to walk with our patients along their better-hearing journey, providing them and their loved ones, with a better hearing experience for life.”

Lindsey Dietrich, a physician with Texas Health Physicians Group, had an unlikely first exposure to her vocation. “It’s a little embarrassing,” she said. “I was four when I went to the original Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney and discovered a fascination with skeletons. It seems only fitting that I became an orthopedic surgeon who works with bones and joints.” Little could her parents have realized what an ideal fit this would be for their daughter. “Orthopedics is a field where there’s still an art to physically examining and ‘fixing’ people,” she said. “In sports medicine I love the emphasis on recovering an active lifestyle. Sports medicine allows me to work with athletes and active people of all ages—from kids to seniors—promoting lifelong fitness and wellness and encouraging injury prevention. I love that my job allows me to be deeply involved in my community through volunteering. I can’t imagine doing anything else.” Over the past four years, this award-winning and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon has partnered with local companies to develop the premier facility for athletes recovering from injuries or looking to improve their fitness. “I’d like to see this unique facility be a flagship for recovery, injury prevention, and overall wellness,” she said. As a physician, Dr. Dietrich is passionate about patient empowerment. “I believe in giving people the information and the power to make their own good decisions about their health, bodies, and lives,” she said. “I have a special place in my heart for young athletes because kids are in such a pivotal time in their lives and athletic careers.”

ave you ever thought about putting your hand in a stranger’s mouth? Not many have. And no one probably should (because that’s obviously gross). “Every day I ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, and maybe one has answered orthodontist,” said Dr. Swapp. “My initial decision in choosing the dental profession was based on the example of my Boy Scout leader when I was younger. Not only was I intrigued by the many technical aspects of dentistry, but his dedication to serving his patients and the community inspired me to do the same.” After 11 years of higher education, Dr. Swapp was finally able to pay it forward. After school, he took on a teaching position at Baylor Dental School where he instructed aspiring orthodontists. He still teaches part-time but receives no compensation for the time he donates to the school. “I love teaching and sharing the things I’ve learned,” he said. “Many others blessed me by imparting their knowledge, and I feel it’s important to do the same. I’m one of the fortunate people who truly loves what I do.” Dr. Swapp’s dedication to service extends beyond helping other orthodontists and is evident throughout his orthodontic practice. He and his staff are continually looking for ways to improve the orthodontic experience for their patients. “Our practice is very family-oriented,” he said. “We treat every patient as though they were a member of our own family. My staff and I are always looking for ways we can go above and beyond for our patients; to offer them things they might not find elsewhere.” Dr. Swapp strives to remain available to speak with patients personally, even after hours. “Every patient sees me at every visit,” he said. “I try to

t should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone conduction hearing. “This was back when we had portable record players,” she said. “I took the record player to school and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone conduction hearing.” The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she said. After more than 20 years serving as an audiologist, the last ten with her own practice, Dr. Blaising sees herself as a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she said. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we’re starting a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing difficulties.” Dr. Blaising says she has the best staff on the planet. “They join me in my mission to help our

FROM COUCH

POTATO TO PAVEMENT, ONE STEP AT A TIME 64

The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu famously said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” For those who aren’t accustomed to regular exercise, starting a new exercise plan might seem like a daunting prospect. The key is to start slowly and deliberately with manageable initial goals. It’s easy to begin with lots of enthusiasm, but a common pitfall is losing that good feeling when the reality of strenuous work sets in. By setting realistic objectives from the outset of a new fitness program, we can build morale by achieving small but consistent victories. It’s fun to see hard work produce measurable progress, and this is what makes going from sitting on the couch to running a 5K (3.1 miles) one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do. There are several “couch-to-5K” programs available, and all share a process of daily, incremental increases in the level of effort. The most common is a smart-phone app called—you guessed it—Couch to 5K. Couch-to-5K programs generally start with brief walks, followed by longer walks, then short jogs, and so on. In the early

stages, there are short rest periods inserted between workouts. It can be so relaxing, you may forget you’re exercising once your body gets used to the new physical exertion. The main idea is not to push yourself so hard that you get frustrated, or worse yet, injured. That sort of hard work can make infrequent exercisers give up on a program. Couch-to-5K programs use a “boil the frog” approach to turning up the heat, so to speak, allowing you to see measured progress along the way without noticing things are getting hot. The secret to the effectiveness of these kinds of programs is gently re-familiarizing yourself with how your body reacts to exercise. At no point do you experience a steep increase in the effort you’re expected to put forth. If you can walk, you can do this. You set the deadlines and limits involved. The goals are your goals, and can be anything from achieving the ability to walk for a few minutes without feeling fatigued to becoming an ultra-marathon runner. It’s never too late to get into a new habit. Take those famous words to heart— and make the first step into a new future for you and your health.

Four years ago, Renata added urban salon The Parlour House. Jackson and Lauren and their team are passionate about hair care and have chimed in this month about some prevalent hair-care myths so you can keep your locks looking good.

Renata Salons is a glamorous full-service hair salon in a three-story Victorian home located just off Main Street in historic downtown Grapevine at 224 E College St, Grapevine, TX 76051. Getting your hair cut helps it grow faster. Answer: FALSE The truth is trimming your hair prevents split ends. Split ends create breakage and give you a “natural haircut” which causes your hair to look like it’s not growing. Regular trims do not promote growth, but do help keep the hair healthy and strong. - Tracey, stylist

Air drying your hair is important. Answer: TRUE Air drying as often as possible is great for your hair. Hair is the weakest when it is wet and can easily break under the stress of heat and brushing. Once a week, let hair completely air dry to give your hair a break from the heat. Partially air drying your hair before blow drying also helps. Use a styling mouse that protects from heat and leaves your hair shiny such as Mousse Bouffant or L’incroyable from Kerastase. -Tianna, stylist

Coloring your hair damages it. Answer: FALSE This myth comes from the fact that boxed hair dye uses harsh chemicals that are not good for your hair. However, professionals at reputable salons use high-quality products that don’t damage your hair. Many also offer deep conditioning treatments so you’ll leave with healthier hair than before you colored it! Be sure to research the products used at a salon before you visit. -Lauren, owner

You should avoid pools in the summer because they’re bad for your hair. Answer: FALSE While chlorine is not good for hair, you can take preventative measures to combat the effect it has on your color.

Hair is like a sponge, so wet your hair or use a leave-in conditioner before swimming in a chlorine pool to reduce the amount of chlorine your hair absorbs. Use a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine buildup immediately after swimming. Deep conditioning your hair regularly to maintain moisture also helps to keep your hair beautiful during the summer months. -Tianna, stylist

Hair should always be rinsed with cold water. Answer: TRUE As much as you may hate it, use cold water. Hot water opens the cuticle and allows the color to slip out of the hair. For the same reason, you should always style hair on low heat with hot tools, as heat can cause the color to slip. -Tracey, stylist

Fine hair is drier than curly hair. Answer: FALSE Curly hair is naturally drier therefore needs lots of moisture for lustrous locks. Use a conditioner that helps tame unruly and frizzy hair. We love the Kerastase Discipline line for curly hair. Use smoothing products such as Kerastase L’incroyable blowdry cream to help control your hair and to protect your hair from heat. - Tianna, curly hair specialist

There’s nothing you can do to help hair color last longer. Answer: TRUE Always use a salon professional shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair to extend the life of your color. Only shampoo your hair every other day to maintain the rich vibrant color and keep the natural oils in your hair. Use a moisturizing conditioner to keep the hair healthy. Healthy hair holds onto color better than porous hair. -Heather, color specialist

Purple dye prevents blonde from going brassy. Answer: TRUE If you struggle with brassy blonde you should use a good purple tented shampoo or conditioner. Our favorite is the purple Color Lustre conditioner by Shu Uemura. A glaze or conditioning treatment every 4-6 weeks will also help maintain shine, luster, and a beautiful tone in blonde hair. Blonde hair can get quite dry so regular trims are also important to prevent breakage. -Lauren, owner

It’s hopeless to expect fine hair to ever have any volume. Answer: FALSE Use a shampoo and conditioner specifically made for fine hair such as Kerasatse Densifique to achieve volume and lift. Use a styling mousse to achieve amazing volume that will last all day. My favorite product to create texture is Texture Wave by Shu Uemura. -Lauren, owner

Men need a trim twice a month. Answer: FALSE Men can easily maintain their style by getting haircuts every 3-5 weeks. Keep your hair line clean by getting regular neck trims too. -Jackson, owner

Light

LET THERE BE

REBECCA ASHBROOK CARRELL • @REBECCALSS • KCBI.ORG

Have you ever had a doctor dilate your eyes?

I have been nearsighted since age eight, so I am all too familiar with the less-than-pleasant sensation of having my pupils pried open while a doctor peers at my retinas with a microscope and a flashlight. It’s really not the eye exam that bothers me. That’s over and done in a few minutes. It’s the after-effects. When your pupils are dilated, your eyes cannot control the amount of light that gets in. Peer into a mirror with the lights off. Then turn on a lamp. You will see your pupils go from large to nearly pinpoint in a matter of seconds. Light is good. Too much light is not good. Since the moment God said, “Let there be light!” we have associated light with good and darkness with evil. Jesus called Himself “the light of the world.” In classic literature throughout the ages, light has symbolized love, life, wisdom, and insight. Light is knowledge. Light is understanding. Darkness is confusion and chaos. If there is an area where I consistently struggle, it’s with a spiritual fear of the dark.

70

I want to know the plan. I want to know what’s coming. I want to see what’s next, and not just what’s next but what’s down the road and around the corner. I want my life mapped out like an itemized schedule—married by thirty, kids by thirty-two, career change at thirty-seven, first book published at forty, second book published by... You get the picture. If only I could see the plan then I wouldn’t worry so much. I wouldn’t agonize over decisions, and I wouldn’t make so many mistakes. My problem is not with doubt. Ephesians 2:10 reassures me that God does, indeed, have a plan for my life. It reminds me that God created me with purpose, on purpose, and for a purpose. I trust God’s plan.

information could damage our growth? Psalm 119:105 describes God’s Word (the Bible) as a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. That means that God, in His infinite wisdom, has us on a need-to-know basis. If God were to lay out everything for us in advance, He would do us a terrible disservice. There would be no need for faith. No need for trust. No need for prayer, which would rob us of an intimate relationship with our Father. We would never know the thrill of watching Him come through in the most unexpected of ways, and never the growth that comes from the struggle. We would simply resign ourselves to our lot and let things happen.

I just want more than one piece at a time.

God loves us too much to tell us everything at once.

Could it be that just as too much light can damage our eyes, too much

Here is what I know that I know: • God loves you

• Because He loves you, He wants what is best for you • He made you for something • He delights to watch you discover it • His plan is far better than yours Maybe you suffer from a spiritual fear of the dark, too. Perhaps God wants us to trust Him with our future so we can fully live in the present.

And when we walk with God, we walk in the Light of Life. 71

KIDDIN’ AROUND Know when it’s time for a kidney screening BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT

When it comes to kidney disease, to screen or not to screen? That is the question. The short answer is yes—if you’re at an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease, that is. If you are, medical experts agree that you should undergo routine, annual kidney screening, because early detection can head off dialysis or kidney transplant and prolong life. But how to know if you’re at risk? According to the National Kidney Foundation, “anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of chronic kidney disease” could be susceptible. That’s because over time diabetes and high blood pressure can damage the kidneys. And that damage may not manifest with any physical symptoms. That means one in three Americans—roughly 74 million people—should make a routine kidney screening part of their annual check-up. When detected early, chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be slowed, and more serious complications can be prevented. Additionally, because our kidneys tend to work less effectively as we age, those over 60 and anyone with heart or peripheral vascular disease (hardening of the arteries) should be screened for CKD annually, as well as anyone of African American, Asian, Hispanic,

72

American Indian, or Pacific Islander decent, or anyone diagnosed as obese. There are two quick and easy tests to screen for chronic kidney disease: a blood kidney function test for creatinine (the waste a healthy kidney should filter from the blood) and a kidney damage test for protein in the urine (an early sign of CKD). These noninvasive and inexpensive tests determine how well your kidneys are filtering wastes from the blood, and whether products that should remain in the body, such as protein, are leaking into the urine. If you have any of the risk factors mentioned above, you have a one-inthree chance of developing CKD. Chances are anyone reading this article is either part of that 33 percent who need to be getting screened, or know someone who is. If so, now’s a good time to schedule a screening appointment to make sure your kidneys are working as they should—and to prevent any further kidney damage.

Trusting in a family tradition

Lisa Miller was the 4th in her family to get a kidney transplant at Methodist Dallas BY MEREDITH KNIGHT

When Lisa Miller first consulted with Richard Dickerman, MD, FACS, about her kidney problems, he didn’t recognize her. But when she told him whose daughter she was, his jaw dropped. He had performed kidney transplants on three of Lisa’s family members over the past two decades, including her mother. Now, it was Lisa who was in need of a transplant. “Methodist Dallas Medical Center is our go-to hospital for kidney problems, because they know our history and they care about our family,” Lisa says. “We just love Dr. Dickerman. I would never consider having anyone else perform my transplant.” As the founder of Methodist Dallas’ kidney transplant program, Dr. Dickerman has performed more than 3,000 transplants in his 38-plus years with the hospital — and Lisa’s family certainly stands out. “After performing four transplants for the same family, I almost feel like an adopted family member,” he says. “Seeing my former patients live healthy lives after a transplant is very rewarding and underlines the importance of what we do.”

man. She remembers the impact that first transplant had on her childhood. “My mom was able to come to my softball games after that,” Lisa recalls. “To hear her yell in the stands — a lot of kids would have been embarrassed, but not me. I was just happy she was there.” Over the years, Lisa watched as the lives of her brother, David Taylor, and her aunt, Linda Reaves, were transformed by kidney transplants. By 2016, Lisa herself was in stage IV renal failure and faced a five-year wait for a donor to give her a second chance at life.

A COUSIN’S GIFT Fortunately, kidney disease isn’t the only trait that runs in Lisa’s family. Generosity and selflessness are also there. Her mother, brother, and aunt all received kidneys from loving family members. Kidney donation is one of the few transplantations that can be performed with a living donor, and family members often provide the best matches. This time Lisa’s cousin, Stacy Kowalkowski, stepped up.

NO STRANGER TO SICKNESS

When Stacy became aware of Lisa’s condition, she prayed about whether or not to donate her kidney to her cousin.

Lisa had always known that she was at risk for kidney problems because a condition causing renal failure runs in her family. Her late mother, Betty Taylor, had two transplants, the first in 1972 and the second in 2000 by Dr. Dicker-

“I asked God what my purpose was supposed to be and if it was for Lisa,” she says. “I just looked up to the sky and told my Aunt Betty, ‘I’m going to try to help your baby girl if I can. I’m going to try to help my cousin.’”

CERTAIN OF SUCCESS Stacy felt confident in her decision to become a living donor to Lisa, as well as in the safety and effectiveness of the transplant procedure. “My mom, Shirley Neal, was a living donor to her sister, Linda Reaves, and she is perfectly fine,” she says. “My Aunt Linda is doing great. Sherrie Carr, Lisa’s sister, gave a kidney to her mother, and her recovery was fine. So I wasn’t worried. I was just grateful I could help.” As expected, the transplant went smoothly. It’s now been over a year since Stacy donated her kidney to Lisa, and both cousins are doing well. “I don’t know how I could ever repay Stacy for what she did for me,” Lisa says. Dr. Dickerman says the generosity of living donors, like Stacy, inspires him, and he encourages more people to follow her example. “Increasing living donations would be a major advantage for kidney transplantation,” he says. “You only have one heart, but you have two kidneys, and one will work almost as well as two.” 214-947-1800 • 1-800-284-2185 1411 N. BA C K T O A S I C S

Back pain is one of the most common ailments sending Americans to their doctor’s office for treatment. According to some medical authorities, the odds are you’ll have an episode of back pain severe enough that you seek medical attention about once every 15 years. BY DAVID BUICE

74

COMMON CAUSES

RISK FACTORS

Back pain often develops suddenly without a specific cause your doctor can easily identify, but conditions commonly linked to back pain include the following.

Anyone, even children and teens, can develop back pain. But there are a variety of factors that can put you at greater risk.

• Muscle or ligament strain Repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement may strain back muscles and spinal ligaments. • Bulging or ruptured disks The disks in your spine act as cushions between the vertebrae, and the soft tissue inside a disk can bulge or rupture, placing pressure on a nerve. However, you can have a bulging or ruptured disk without back pain. • Arthritis In some cases, arthritis in the spine can lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, a condition called spinal stenosis. • Skeletal irregularities Scoliosis, a condition in which the spine curves to the side, can cause pain—but usually only if the curvature is severe. • Osteoporosis The spine’s vertebrae can develop compression fractures, especially if your bones become porous or brittle.

• Age The chances of having back pain increase around age 30 to 40. • Lack of exercise Weak, unused muscles in the back can lead to pain. • Excess weight Being too heavy puts extra stress on your back. • Improper lifting Using your back instead of your legs can cause back pain. • Disease Some types of arthritis and cancer can contribute to back pain. • Psychological factors People prone to depression and anxiety seem to be at greater risk for back pain. • Smoking This habit can prevent your body from delivering enough nutrients to the disks in your back. For many reasons, if you’re a smoker, please stop!

Fortunately, by following your doctor’s directions and making some recommended lifestyle changes, in most cases your back pain can be reduced and hopefully eliminated.

75

STANDING CORRECTED Nearly 95 percent of lower back pain can be treated without surgery through a combination of anti-inflammatory medications, heat, physical therapy, exercise and weight loss, and tobacco abstinence. When conservative treatment doesn’t work and the pain is persistent and disabling, surgery might well be your next option.

COMMON SURGICAL PROCEDURES FOR THE BACK Discectomy This procedure involves removal of the herniated portion of a disk to relieve irritation and inflammation of a nerve. Laminectomy The surgeon removes bone to enlarge the spinal canal and relieve nerve pressure caused by spinal stenosis. Fusion This procedure permanently connects two or more bones in your spine to relieve pain by adding stability to a spinal fracture. It’s sometimes used to relieve pain caused by a degenerated or injured disk. Artificial disks For some, implanting artificial disks is an alternative to spinal fusion for painful movement between two vertebrae caused by a degenerated or injured disk.

76

WHAT TYPE OF SURGERY? Surgical procedures for the spine are often referred to as an open procedure or minimally invasive surgery (MIS). With the traditional open method, the surgeon cuts through muscle to get to the problem area. The procedure can take up to three hours. In contrast, MIS uses portals or tiny incisions in the skin, and the surgeon inserts small, microsurgical instruments to complete the procedure—which may take as little as 75 minutes. Some MIS surgeons also use lasers to separate or eliminate tissue, but even when using a laser, the surgeon must make an incision in your back. There is no incision-free back surgery. There are proponents of both surgical techniques, and before surgery you probably should chose a surgeon trained in both. Discuss and carefully consider all options, get more than one opinion, and don’t give in to any marketing pressure. It’s your back and your life, so choose the option you truly believe is best for you.

What’s your best bet in the battle of the bulge? BY LARUE GILLESPIE

So you’ve decided it’s time to lose a little weight. That’s great! Now you’re exploring your options. Cabbage soup diet? Ick! Jumping around in a super intense new gym? Too much work—and your knees aren’t what they used to be. Liposuction? Maybe a quick and easy fix is the ticket? What to do, what to do… If you have a considerable amount of weight to lose (100 pounds or more), any sound plastic surgeon will tell you to try dieting and exercising to reach or get close to a healthy goal weight before going under the knife. He or she might recommend bariatric surgery, particularly if you have genetic or hormonal issues thwarting your weight-loss efforts. If you don’t have a lot of weight to lose and there are some trouble areas that are bothering you, then liposuction, a tummy tuck, or some other type of cosmetic procedure could be just what you need. But so could hiring a personal trainer to kick you in the pants. How do you know which direction to go? We asked the experts.

ARE YOU A GOOD CANDIDATE? “The perfect candidates for skin tightening and liposuction are generally fit and at a good weight but have one stubborn area that persists despite diet and exercise,” said Dr. Levine. “However, sometimes there are patients who are only mildly overweight and are not candidates for a bariatric procedure, but at the same time are having difficulty losing weight,” he said. “In this instance, I often opt to do a smaller procedure that they want to help them get over the hump, renew confidence, and ramp up their workout and diet programs. I have had much success with this approach.” “A personal trainer helps you change your lifestyle and practice habits that will allow you to lose the weight, tone those problem areas, and maintain the look that you want,” said Steven McDaniels, director of fitness and recreation at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida. “Even if surgery can give you the look you want, there

NO SURGICAL FIX FOR VISCERAL FAT Plastic surgery cannot get rid of visceral fat (fat that collects around organs in your abdomen). High amounts of visceral fat in your body can lead to all kinds of health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Only proper diet and exercise can reduce this type of fat. is no replacement for healthy eating and exercise to stay in shape and look good long term.” On the other hand, “sometimes people have trouble areas of the body that would require extreme dieting and excessive exercise to achieve the improvement they seek,” said Dr. Elie Levine, the director of plastic surgery at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC. “In this case, surgery is a wonderful option to eliminate the aesthetic concern.” Basically, if you haven’t worked out in 10 years and you’re dealing with some flab, eating right and exercising under the guidance of a personal trainer can help you get the tight and toned body you want. However, if you have already tried dieting and exercise but still have stubborn pockets of fat (like a belly pooch), or sagging skin from having babies or from extreme weight loss, then plastic surgery (like liposuction, a tummy tuck, or other procedures) can get you the results you crave.

EXERCISE SUGGESTIONS FOR COMMON TROUBLE SPOTS: It is impossible to spot reduce an area with exercise alone, but Steven McDaniels, director of fitness and recreation at Beacon College in Leesburg, Florida, suggests a few exercises you can do to strengthen and tone common trouble spots. • Muffin top: side bends, side plank hip lifts • Belly pooch: scissor kicks, reverse crunch • Bat wings: triceps kickbacks, triceps dips • Saddle bags: side leg raises, side lunges

HOMESTEAD

HOW TO COOK UP AN INVITING KITCHEN If you’re like me, your kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s where everyone tends to congregate to enjoy each other’s company, satisfy our hunger, engage in candid family conversations, share love and laughter, and commiserate over our challenges. And today, with so many of us focusing on healthy eating to fight obesity and food-driven health issues, meal planning and prep have become real priorities. This typically includes prepping lots of fresh fruits and veggies, which can take a bit more counter space. An organized, inviting kitchen can make the process less cumbersome and more enjoyable, and even easier to entice other family members to help with the tasks. Bonus! So what can you do to make your kitchen more inviting and functional? First of all, create an organized, efficient kitchen where everything that you need in your day-to-day meal

82

preparation is readily accessible but, preferably, hidden away. When we’re working with clients designing their kitchens, we try to leave plenty of counter space free to use as work surfaces, which makes it easier to prepare meals, but also encourages “helpers” to assist the primary cook. And, as I’m sure you know, when family members assist with preparing healthy recipes, they are much more likely to be excited to eat it, and proud of themselves in the process. But when the counters are completely covered with small appliances, mail, homework projects and miscellaneous items, it’s discouraging to even think about cooking and can be a difficult (and irritating) process for both you and your helpers. “But what about all of the stuff that lives in my kitchen now?”, you say. Well, this is the time to seriously edit, edit, edit. Go through each item in your kitchen and

give away, sell or donate all of those items cluttering your cabinets, countertops, drawers and pantry that you never use. And then, neatly organize the leftover ones that you do. You’ll be amazed at how much space you can free up, seriously. If it’s still feeling a bit cluttered, rarely-used items can be stored in cabinets or closets outside of the kitchen. For example, I love repurposing a coat or linen closet (or even the space under the stairs) into an “entertaining” storage space that holds trays, platters, serving bowls, small appliances, candles and seasonal cocktail napkins. It’s fun to organize it (okay, call me crazy, but it’s truly so satisfying) and easy to access these items that you don’t use on a daily basis when you need them. Another trick? Create an assigned “Beverage Station” in the kitchen, which allows multiple people to use the space and help with preparations without tripping over each other. And, on that note, if you’d

like help setting the table, placing the silverware drawer right below where someone is chopping and prepping probably isn’t the best location for it. And finally, decorating your kitchen and breakfast area completes the inviting feel. Countertops, cabinets, flooring, lighting, furniture and accessories can all play important roles in how much you and your family enjoy the space. It’s proven that our surroundings can greatly affect our mood, so I recommend creating an environment that’s visually and functionally pleasing to enhance your kitchen experience. (If you need some assistance, a professional designer is skilled in helping you pull it all together.) In the right environment you and your family and friends can work towards creating a healthier diet and lifestyle. And yes, you’re nourishing your loved ones bodies and souls (including your own), but you’re also making some wonderful, lifetime memories in the process.

The approximately 2,580 square foot Perch Haus rests in the heart of East Dallas on the shore of White Rock Lake, bordering the popular 9-mile trail that encircles it. A grand “vanishing point entry stair opens itself up to guests, leading to a steeltiered landscape and a front door roughly 12 feet above street level. The pronounced second floor cantilever commands the attention of the hundreds of cyclists and runners that pass by daily.

A simple spring cleaning list BY AUDREY ASHE

Spring, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: Sunny days, birds singing, April showers that bring May flowers, the anticipation of summer... oh yeah, and spring cleaning. While it might not seem like the best thing about the season at first, it’s a necessary event that will leave your home fresh and inviting. Here are some cleaning tasks to get done this season.

BEDROOM: • Rotate mattresses to help them wear evenly. • Pare down your closet. Donate or discard any items you haven’t worn in the last year or so. • Replace saggy or deflated pillows. Toss washable pillows in the washing machine.

BATHROOM: • Give bathroom cabinets a thorough clean-out. Toss old products and makeup, and wipe off shelves, drawers, and window sills. • Are your bath towels and mat looking worn? It’s probably time to replace them.

DINING ROOM: • Dust, wash, and rearrange the contents of your cabinets for a fresh look. Be sure to wipe down or polish interior shelves and walls.

LIVING OR FAMILY ROOM: • Organize and dust bookshelves, clean knickknacks, put some things in storage or donate to reduce clutter.

• Give the floor underneath the sofa and other furniture some serious cleaning attention, especially in a house with pets. • Sofa and chair cushions and throw pillows hold onto dirt and pet hair. Machine wash covers if possible, or have them professionally cleaned.

KITCHEN: • Remove everything from the cupboards, wipe down the shelves, then return items in an organized arrangement. Check pantry for canned goods beyond their expiration date. • Set your oven to self-clean mode or DIY with oven cleaner. Wipe away cleaner residue, debris, and ash with a damp cloth. • Remove food, shelves, and drawers from the refrigerator, then clean them as well as the interior. Throw away old condiments and food.

TIPS: Fireplace soot can be removed from brick with soap and water when scrubbed with a thick bristled brush. Ceiling light fixtures collect airborne dust all year long. Clean them with an extendable duster. Remove shades to clean thoroughly. Use an appropriate cleaner on glass shades. Hire a professional to wash windows and the exterior of your house, and to shampoo carpets and area rugs. For hardwood floors, vacuum up dust, debris, and pet hair, then use a highquality wood-cleaning product to remove dirt and oil buildup.

ADVENTURE

GEOTHERMAL GLOBETROTTING

Relax your mind, body, and soul at some of the best hot springs in the world BY ANNETTE BROOKS

94

T

hroughout the ages, people have flocked to geothermal springs to reap the benefits of their warm, restorative, mineral-rich waters. Now, with our renewed interest in healthy, natural activities, the original spa encounter is making a comeback. When planning your next trip, check out geothermal pools for built-in, healthful relaxation breaks. To pique your interest, we’ve highlighted a few hot spring experiences located on islands around the globe, each with its own unique attributes. ICELAND Part of the magic of Iceland is the geothermal pools found all over the island. The Blue Lagoon, the most famous, renews itself every 40 hours with waters that originate over a mile below the surface. The lagoon gets its brilliant blue color from silica in the water that reflects sunlight (the water itself is clear). A pampering experience at the lagoon includes luxury spa treatments (the in-water massage is divine) and access to an executive lounge with a fireplace, stunning views, its own outdoor deck, private showers, and complimentary skin care products. Want a more low-key thermal pool setting? Gamla Laugin (translated as “the old swimming pool”), also known as “the secret lagoon,” sits next to a large flowing river and small geysers. People first started to swim in this geothermal pool in 1891. It includes a rather basic yet comfortable building with changing rooms, beverages and beer, and a casual snack bar.

95

ADVENTURE NEW ZEALAND You’re never far from a naturally-heated soak in New Zealand. Hot Water Beach is one of the country’s most unique thermal pool experiences. Naturally heated mineral water bubbles up from deep within the earth to emerge through golden sand just a few yards from the ocean. When the tide is low, you can dig your own spa pool in the sand near the rocks at the southern end of the beach. Spades and shovels for digging are available for rent in local cafés. Lost Spring, also located on the Coromandel Peninsula, offers a picturesque soak experience with hand-sculpted pools and soothing waterfalls framed by native forest. A place of tranquility, Lost Spring is a great place to recharge, relax, and ponder life. Make a day of it and enjoy delicious cuisine with amazing views, and choose from a variety of beauty and relaxation treatments in the Polynesia-style day spa.

JAPAN With more than 3,000 hot springs (called onsens) throughout Japan, you could say the country is the queen of the thermal spring world, with each region having its own legendary onsens—and it’s impossible to mention them all. Oedo Onsen Monogatari, located on the artificial island of Odaiba out in Tokyo Bay, is a giant super-onsen modelled on an Edo period town. With a huge variety of indoor and outdoor tubs, restaurants, relaxation rooms, spas, and shops, you can easily spend a whole day at this one-of-a-kind, theme park-like onsen. Interested in a more authentic onsen retreat? Konansou Ryokan (a ryokan is a kind of traditional inn) carries on the heritage of age-old Japanese culture. After soaking in the hot spring, change into a yukata (casual kimono), enjoy top level Japanese cuisine, and relax in a uniquely Japanese room complete with tatami mats. Many rooms, as well as the roof terrace above the 8th floor, have a view of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi. If privacy is what you desire, reserve a hotel room with a private onsen tub and in-room dining in the evening.

ALASKA There are plenty of upscale hot springs, spas, and resorts to choose from throughout the United States, as well as thermal pools among natural settings in the great outdoors. If you’re up for an unspoiled wilderness adventure, Goddard Hot Springs, located about 16 miles south of Sitka on Baranof Island, is as real as they get. Goddard—one of the first natural springs discovered in Alaska—is the definition of remote and rustic, and can be accessed by boat or floatplane. There are two modern cedar bathhouses on-site with open shelters over the hot tubs. Bring water and a snack, and don’t expect any frills. The area has outhouses (we meant it when we said rustic), and boardwalks provide easy walking. Hot springs don’t provide the kind of miracle cures our ancestors were searching for, but a thermal pool soak can boost blood circulation, stress reduction, and pain relief. It has even been suggested that certain minerals in the water may help build your body’s immune system.

Texas Bluebonnets Beckon

The sights of springtime draw near BY ANNETTE BROOKS

Few things represent spring in Texas more than bluebonnets. Blanketing fields and roadsides in sheets of blue, their showy display inspires a deep appreciation for the sheer beauty of nature and the Texas countryside. Although the Texas state flower appears in many areas, especially throughout the Hill Country, ask anyone about the best location to view them and you will likely get different answers. Everyone has their own favorite spot. It’s also difficult to pinpoint exactly where and when bluebonnets will make their appearance, as locations may vary from year to year, depending on the weather patterns. Bluebonnets usually bloom in late March and early April, but it’s a good idea to check out the season’s forecast so you will see the flowers at their peak. (Just search online for a 2018 bluebonnet forecast.) When we queried a few native Texans about the most picturesque places to see bluebonnets, a few were frequently mentioned. This is not a definitive list, but it’s a good place to get started.

102

THE “BLUEBONNET HOUSE” IN MARBLE FALLS Heading out of Marble Falls on Highway 281 toward Burnet, an abandoned twostory 19th century homestead, aptly called the “Bluebonnet House,” sits alone in a field surrounded by grasses, bluebonnets, and other wildflowers. If you slow down to snap a photo, you won’t be alone. It’s said to be one of the most photographed houses in Texas.

ENNIS, TEXAS Designated as the home of the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail and the Official Bluebonnet City, Ennis showcases over 40 miles of mapped driving bluebonnet trails. Be sure to check the current map on the website, call the Ennis Convention and Visitors Bureau at (972) 878-4748 for updated trails and directions, or visit BluebonnetTrail.org. Where the bluebonnets bloom changes annually on the maps, which are highlighted and updated throughout the season.

FREDERICKSBURG, WILLOW CITY LOOP One of the most popular scenic drives in the Hill Country, this loop is a premier springtime destination for bluebonnet viewing. The boot fence, which sports cowboy and cowgirl boots on its wooden posts, heightens the Texas charm. To get there from Fredericksburg, drive north on Highway 16 for approximately 13 miles to Willow City. Head east on Ranch Road 1323 for about three miles, then turn left onto Willow City Loop. During peak bluebonnet season, plan to drive the “Loop” on a weekday when there is less traffic.

LLANO, TEXAS Take Highway 16 from Fredericksburg to Llano, a charming little town with shops and restaurants. (Try Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que, a no-frills smokehouse experience that’s worth a visit.) People claim

that just north of Llano are some of the “best bluebonnet fields you’ll ever see.” Another option—from Fredericksburg, take North Highway 87 to FM 2323 to Llano for some splendid bluebonnet viewing.

APRIL BLUEBONNET FESTIVALS Texas loves to celebrate its bluebonnets with special events. Chappell Hill and Burnet are a couple of good examples. Chappell Hill’s shindig has earned the title “Official State of Texas Bluebonnet Festival,” and the town considers itself “the heart of bluebonnet country.” Located halfway between Houston and Austin on Highway 290, this year’s 54th Annual Bluebonnet Festival, held April 14th and 15th, will have more than 250 exhibitors. Not to be outdone, the bluebonnet festival in Burnet, held April 13th to 15th this year, includes a grand parade on Saturday. Considered by many to be one of the biggest and best parades in central Texas, it includes marching bands, antique cars, horses, fire trucks, and special performing groups such as the Sunrise Beach Lawn Chair Brigade and Hill Country Plungettes. Exploring Texas’ bluebonnet country has been described as “surreal perfection,” and we couldn’t agree more. Whether you make a day of it or plan a weekend trip, the flower-painted landscape brings feelings of joy and wonderment. What better way to celebrate spring? FREDERICKSBURG, TX
