“The earth belongs to Me and all that is in it.”
– Psalm 24:1
Turn on the evening news and it can be easy to think this world is spinning out of control. When we watch newscasts about a shaky economy, wars in every corner of the world, and violence being committed by our fellow man, it can be easy to feel hopeless. That’s when we need to remember the promise in Psalm 24:1. The NIV translation puts it like this, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” Our God is a big, big God.
When you’re tempted to feel hopeless, remember our God is still on the throne and still in control of everything. He is sovereign. He’s eternal, faithful, unchanging, omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient, and so much more. Our Loving Daddy reigns over all—now and forever—and our Brother Jesus will forever be King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
If the world is a lot for you right now, remember our Abba father is bigger and stronger than anything that threatens us. The entire earth and all that’s in it belongs to Him. And yet He places us, His children, above it all. Never forget that God is in control and God loves you very much.
We hope you enjoy our Top Doc edition as we celebrate the many outstanding medical professions—in every branch of medicine—practicing right here in our backyard. How blessed are we?

NOTICING GOD’S MOVEMENT IN YOUR LIFE
BY JODIE NIZNIK
There’s still time.
Even though you probably ditched your resolution somewhere around January 19, which is where you’ll find mine, we can still make 2023 an intentional year. Resolutions are challenging because they’re often wishful thinking without an actionable plan. Lose weight. Ditch the carbs. Read the entire Bible.
18 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2023 community | FRUIT OF THE VINE
We dig in and gut it out for a few weeks. But then we go to that birthday party. Or hit Leviticus in the reading plan. And the resolution loses its luster just as justification kicks in.
But before we throw all caution to the wind to consume three slices of cake while letting our Bibles gather dust, perhaps we should take a different approach — a kinder and gentler one.
The first step is to discover the true intention of your original resolutions. If you diligently dig, you’ll find they’re all pointing to the same thing: our deep desire to live a life that matters, a life of significance, and a life that positively impacts the people and world around us. Perhaps I’m wrong. I know our desires are nuanced. But I also know that even if your resolutions were purely selfish, you don’t desire your life to be.
I know this because our Creator instilled within us a deep desire to do good before we were born. Ephesians 2:10 in the NLT says it this way: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” How do we know what these good things are?
God can make his will known to us by speaking in an audible voice or writing on a wall. Trust me; I have asked him to. But this isn’t how God usually chooses to speak to us today. He seems to move within the regular rhythms of our life. Most devoted followers of God, much wiser than me, will tell you this.
Discerning God’s movement in our lives, then, becomes an exercise in noticing. And in our distraction-prone world, noticing is easier said than done. One of the tools I’ve found helpful is something Christians have been using for centuries called an examen . It’s a simple set of questions asked at the same time each day to help us slow down, reflect, and intentionally notice patterns in our lives. It’s within these patterns that we can start to discern the nudges of God instead of blazing right past them.
I’ve found the examen helpful when facing big decisions, feeling stuck, or needing to ensure I’m still on the right track.
If you search examen online, you will find lots of different questions you can use. They all fall into a few categories intended to help us pay attention to what feels life-giving and life-draining.
Before we go any further, I need to give a disclaimer. Just because something makes it on the life-draining list doesn’t mean you get to skip it altogether. Bills still need to be paid, laundry still needs to be done, and meals still need to be made — but perhaps there are ways to do these things differently. The truth is, we will always have parts of our day that don’t feel life-giving. That’s part of being human. The question becomes, does most of your energy go toward these life-draining tasks? If so, that’s something to pay attention to and work toward changing.
Here’s the list of questions I use:
What energized me in the last twenty-four hours?
Where did I feel the least energy? What were the circumstances of that situation?
What has my physical body been telling me?
What was I most grateful for over the last twentyfour hours?
Did I sense God leading me in the last twenty-four hours? If so, did I cooperate or resist?
I recommend you write out the questions (or save this article) and place them where you will see them daily. I choose my bedside table for evening reflection or my office for morning reflection. Then, each day take 5 minutes to review and write down what you are noticing. Patterns will likely emerge as consistent feelings, nudges, or desires. Prayerfully pay attention to these. Ask God to help you know what to do next. And finally, when it’s time, make the change or take the next step.
Whether you’re facing a monumental life change or wondering what your next small step should be, give the examen a try. 2023 can still be a year full of meaning and intention, even without all those resolutions.

HILDEBRAND ORTHODONTICS
JED HILDEBRAND DDS, MSD AND LENA BORTNEM, DDS,
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT PHOTOS BY LANDON DAY DAYDREAM PHOTOGRAPHY
For more than 25 years, Hildebrand Orthodontics has make orthodontics friendly and fun. Now, the go-to place for the latest and greatest in orthodontic care is getting even better as the orthodontic team welcomes a brand new provider bringing with her a whole new set of talents. Over the years, Dr. Jed and his team have partnered with generations of patients helping them achieve a smile that’s as functional as it is gorgeous. As the Hildebrand Orthodontics patient base has grown and the practice has flourished, it became obvious to Dr. Jed that it was time to welcome a second orthodontist to the team. But not just anyone would do.
Dr. Jed set about searching for someone who shared his uncompromising commitment to individualized care and his
MSD
dedication to continuing education, clocking far above the hours required to assure Hildebrand Orthodontics patients have access to the gentlest, more precise treatment modern orthodontics can offer. In his search he met Dr. Lena Bortnem and knew he’d found someone special. “Dr. Lena has an amazing rapport with patient of any age—from seven-year-olds coming in for their fi rst evaluation to our most senior patients who still want great looking, fully functional teeth,” he said. “She reflects the patient-fi rst values we embrace and is another insatiable learner, eager to explore anything that will make our patients’ experience better. Our community is really lucky to have her and the fresh new set of skills she brings.”

MEET DR. LENA BORTNEM
Dr. Lena sees herself as more than an orthodontist. “I help facilitate tooth movement to create beautiful, functional smiles that foster confidence and empower patients to reach their full potential,” she said. “A beautiful, healthy smile translates into happiness, invites communication, and opens the door to success and fulfi llment. My mission is to provide my patients with exceptional care, delivered with genuine warmth, empowering my patients to be their best selves.”
New to the area, Dr. Lena says she and her husband are excited about raising their young family in Tarrant County. A former college volleyball player, she enjoys the team approach at Hildebrand Orthodontics. “When creating a smile, the collaboration between patient, doctor and orthodontic team is paramount,” she said. “I’m passionate about embracing the role of coach and cheerleader for each one of my patients. Together we can achieve more.”
YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD
Drs. Jed and Lena agree it’s never too late to have a great smile. “Parents are encouraged to come back to the treatment area to see how their child’s treatment is going and receive updates,” Dr. Lena said. “It’s not unusual for them to be so pleased with their kids’ results they decide they get braces themselves.” Many of these older patients either never had braces or have some minor shifting they’d like corrected. As a leader in the industry, Dr. Jed has excelled in the new technology to straighten teeth faster and simpler than
ever before without the world having to know about it. “You can discretely straighten your teeth—often in about a year— and nobody has to know you’re in treatment,” he said.
THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY
“Invisalign clear tooth aligners can treat a wide range of teeth-straightening conditions, including crossbites, crowding, open bites, gapped teeth, overbites, and underbites,” Dr. Lena said. “You can take them out to eat or for special occasions and, because they’re clear, most people won’t even know you’re wearing them.” And thanks to next-generation digital scanning, Dr. Jed can show you what your new smile will look like before treatment even begins then formulate an individualized treatment plans—unique to you—for the best outcome and stable results, all at affordable family prices.
HIGHLY PERSONALIZED CARE
Dr. Jed or Dr. Lena see every patient at every visit, something you won’t experience at an impersonal, big-box dental office. “Continuity of care is the key to successful orthodontics,” he said. “Arlington is a big city with the heart of a small town. Our team is like a family working together with the goal of treating a small number of patients, but treating them well and giving our employees a good quality of life.”
LATEST ORTHODONTIC SCIENCE
Dr.s Bortnem and Hildebrand and their stellar team offer the latest, cutting-edge technology, including high-tech flexible wires which respond to the temperature of the mouth to straightened teeth faster than ever before and with far less discomfort to patients. “No more tightening of braces and no more bands on back teeth,” Dr. Hildebrand said. “That means far less risk of cavities. We’re also using the new mini braces, the smallest braces on the market—50% smaller than traditional braces—that decrease treatment time by six months.”
MEET DR. JED HILDEBRAND AGAIN
Dallas boy Jed Hildebrand grew up playing football and soccer for Plano Senior High School, where he won state
championships in both. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and Doctorate of Dental Surgery at Baylor as well as completing a two-and-a-halfyear orthodontic residency program to become a board-eligible specialist in orthodontics.
Dr. Jed has participated in Christian dental mission trips to Mexico, Cambodia, India, and Thailand. In 2002, he was a contestant on the hit CBS reality TV show Survivor V: Thailand. He’s also appeared on numerous TV shows, including MTV’s TRL, The Caroline Rhea Show, CBS’s The Early Show, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, E!, Inside Edition, and The Ticket talk radio show. He and his wife and fellow dentist, Dr. Kim Hildebrand, enjoy life with son Kai and daughter Liv. He also enjoys motorcycling, wakeboarding, surfi ng, and staying fit by playing in a men’s premier soccer league in Dallas. Visit HildebrandOrtho.com to find out about the amazing smiles they are creating as a compassionate patient fi rst orthodontic office.

MEET BOARD CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER CATHERINE KWARTENG NYARKO
Ms. Kwarteng Nyarko is on a personal mission to de-stigmatize mental health care and to “open the minds of people to understand that mental health issues aren’t a label, but a disease like diabetes or hypertension are bodily diseases.”
Growing up in Ghana, Africa, she always knew she wanted to help others. Her mother, a nurse, was her role model. Innately motivated to help people achieve better mental health and function, she worked in healthcare in
Ghana before moving to the United States 22 years ago. She further pursued her passion, earning a Bachelor of Science in nursing at Herbert Lehman College (CUNY) in New York City and a Master of Science in nursing at Walden University in Minneapolis.
“It makes my day and uplifts my spirits when a patient who has come to me feeling down and not knowing what to do, tells me their mood has stabilized with treatment, and they can once again do what they want to do. It’s gratifying to know I’ve helped make a difference in their lives,” Ms. Kwarteng Nyarko says.

BAYLOR SCOTT & WHITE SPORTS MEDICINE AND ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE
Whether you’re a student athlete, a weekend warrior, or just want to maintain your active pace, the physicians at Baylor Scott & White Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Institute want you to keep right on moving. The team treats ages 18 and up for everything from concussions to joint replacements to spine surgery.
The three physicians who lead this trained and qualified team strongly agree on their primary goal: to get patients back to the sports and activities they love as quickly as possible. They work closely with each patient learning what level of activity each patient desires and what barriers are slowing them down. Then they create a treatment plan to achieve the patient’s goals.
“I chose this fi eld because I was really interested in spine surgery’s ability to restore a large amount of a patient’s function,” says Dr. Ilyas. “It’s great to see
someone after a month or six weeks who has had their quality of life restored.”
Dr. Ilyas received his medical school training at St. Louis University. He completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His fellowship in orthopedic neurological spine surgery, also at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, gave him the rare opportunity to train in both disciplines.
Dr. Ilyas’ philosophy of treatment rests on understanding what issues are impacting the patient’s quality of life and what the patient wants to resume doing, whether that is running errands, lifting grandchildren, or perfecting their golf game. His respect for his patients motivates him to work toward those goals. While back pain is rarely life threatening, Dr. Ilyas understands it can quickly spoil day-to-day life. Causes can include
Brandon J. Barnes, MD, Haariss bin Ilyas, MD, Brian Mbah, MD

– BRANDON J. BARNES, MD
sleeping wrong or lifting something improperly, problems with the hip joint, a disc out of place, scoliosis, back fractures, even aging. Anywhere from 20- 30% of patients seeking care for low back pain actually have hip bursitis, when a tiny sac of fl uid on the outside points of the hip becomes inflamed. He majors in numerous treatments, many non-surgical, that can solve these problems.
Tailoring the treatment to the patient can seem like putting together a puzzle. Complete comfort with the medical provider fi gures strongly in developing a plan. There is no pressure to rush decisions about care. Patients and doctors together come to a creative solution.
The treatment plan may or may not include surgery. Even though two of the three doctors are surgeons, their philosophy does not make surgery the first choice. Often physical therapy, medications or injections can provide the desired outcomes.
Dr. Mbah calls his primary care practice “the gateway between primary care and surgical medicine.” He specializes in ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal procedures as well as treating concussions. His efforts include staying informed on new options for treatment, including the possibility of stem cell therapies.
He sees many athletes with muscular and skeletal issues who don’t require
surgery. But for patients who do, he works alongside the surgeons, which makes for quick consultations and referrals, saving the patient time and trouble. Because he played many sports as a youngster, he knows what it’s like to fi nd obstacles in the way of doing what you want to do. His number one goal is to understand the patient’s goals and preferences.
Dr. Mbah graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch Hospitals in Galveston. He completed his internship and residency in emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at John Peter Smith Hospital in Ft. Worth
Dr. Barnes also grew up an avid athlete. He remembers a high school soccer injury to his MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) that sidelined him. It didn’t require surgery but a difficult rehabilitation and sitting on the bench watching teammates play made him especially sensitive to his patients’ needs and frustrations.
Dr. Barnes attended Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School and interned in general surgery at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery there as well as a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine at the University of Kentucky. He has special interest in sports injuries, which include
conditions of the shoulder, elbow, and knee, in addition to cartilage injuries and the use of ortho-biologics.
Dr. Barnes takes a team approach to working with student athletes. That team consists of himself, the patient, the physical therapists, family, friends, and the athletic trainer. Most middle schools, high schools, and colleges in the North Texas area employ athletic trainers. They are often fi rst on the scene to evaluate an injury or issue that interferes with a student athlete’s performance. It is common for athletic trainers to refer athletes for treatment and to act as one of the supporters of the patient’s recovery.
Continuing education is a large part of these doctors’ daily work. They attend virtual and in-person conferences, watch webinars, and consult medical journal articles to keep up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs in orthopedics. New advances and treatments as well as less invasive procedures arrive almost every day.
One of the latest new procedures available is the ability to grow a new cartilage. After taking a cartilage sample by biopsy, the physician sends the sample to a lab. There, new cartilage is grown, returned to the doctor, and implanted in the patient’s knee.
A CT scan can show exactly where a shoulder replacement needs to be inserted and the surgeon can use GPS technology during surgery to place the new joint in exactly that spot.
“I’m dedicated to providing the highest quality of care,” says Dr. Barnes. “I try to go above and beyond to ensure a positive experience and a positive outcome.”
When you visit Baylor Scott & White Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Institute, you’ll fi nd a team of physicians and staff who are all dedicated to exactly that kind of care. They will do everything they can to help you live the active life you choose.

INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT | PHOTO BY LANDON DAY
It’s time to feel confident in your own skin. Whether you're looking for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, aesthetic services, sexual wellness, weight management, or men's or women’s wellness services, the team at Institute for Hormonal Balance want to partner with you in your journey toward complete wellness. Patients travel from around the state, around the country, and around the world to be treated by these providers they describe as “compassionate, kind, smart, and knowledgeable.”
Here’s what one happy patient wrote in a fi ve-star review. “These hormones have given me back my life. My skin was so thin before that even the tiniest scrape would pull my skin off. I had zero energy and zero sex drive. Now, I’m acting 1015 years younger and love my life. I’m dating again and having a great time. I got lip injections and Botox and now LOOK as young as I feel. I seriously think I was about fi ve years from death before. I was closing down. Now I have so much more joy in living.”
The symptoms of hormone imbalance are numerous and can include reduced mental focus and memory, fatigue, lack of energy, diffi culty sleeping, irritability, anxiety or depression, decreased muscle strength, joint pain, and reduced sexual desire and performance. The team at Institute for Hormonal Balance want to help relieve those symptoms so you can “fi nd yourself again”.
With that goal in mind, they offer services to diagnosis and treat your hormone imbalance. “Just because you age, doesn’t mean you should feel like a different person,” Mandy said. “Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) pellets are made to replace the hormones
men and women lose as they age. BHRT can often lessen the negative symptoms of hormone imbalance, so you can age healthier and live happier. Using our subcutaneous pellet approach to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, some patients report symptom relief in as little as 7-10 days, although complete symptom relief may take up to six months. We listen to our patients so we can customize each dose of pellet therapy to the individual patient’s needs. We also offer other modalities of hormone optimization to patients.”
If you resolved to lose weight in 2023, but your efforts are falling short, the Institute for Hormonal Balance team wants to help with a supervised weightloss solution that best fits your needs and lifestyle. “If you’ve tried to go it alone with a one-size-fits-all weight loss scheme, we’d love to sit down and talk to you about a weight-loss plan that’s all about you,” Kara said.
The Institute for Hormonal Balance is now accepting new patients. Visit Donovitz. com to learn more or call 817-467-7474 to schedule your initial consultation.
INSTITUTE FOR HORMONAL BALANCE ALSO OFFERS THEIR PATIENTS:

WATER OAK FOOT AND ANKLE SURGERY
Matthew McCabe, DPM, MS
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT | PHOTO BY LAUREN MEDEAN
Dr. McCabe cares about his doctor patient relationships and remembers when he was a patient, the treating physicians taking time to make sure all needs were met in addition to getting to know him on a personal level. They would remember him and always take time to ask personal questions to develop that relationship. He felt like his physician was also a contributor to the community. This is an art that Dr McCabe wants to make sure all of his patients feel.
Toward that end, Dr. McCabe takes time getting to know each patient and looking for the root cause of any problems they’re having with their feet or ankles. “Podiatry encompasses a wide variety of pathology,” Dr. McCabe said. “Although I’m focused on the foot and ankle, on any given day, I might see diabetic patients, patients with deformities, patients with arthritis or fractures, athletes, and weekend warriors—and everything in between. I might perform a bunion procedure, fix an ankle fracture, do a complex muscle, or skin fl ap, an ankle scope, and a hammer toe. With each one, I look to see the person—not just the diagnosis—and consider what I can do to make their life better.”
Dr. McCabe is fellowship trained in limb salvage, reconstructive surgery, and orthoplastics (a fi eld that combines plastics techniques and orthopedic techniques with the goal of salvaging limbs after trauma or chronic wounds and infection). He is the only fellowship trained podiatrist in the area. Even so, he considers surgery a last resort only after all non-surgical options have been explored.
“One of the best things I can do for any patient is to slow down and really listen to them,” Dr. McCabe said. “Then, I want to take the time to explain to them, in
words they understand, all of their treatment options—conservative and surgical—how each treatment works, and the pros and cons of each approach. The more the patient understands about their condition and all the treatment options available to them, the better decision they can make about their care. It’s my job—and my blessing—to educate patients and partner with them in their medical decision-making process.”
Whether your complaint is heel pain, foot and ankle pain, arthritis, foot fractures, ankle fractures, bunion deformities, Achilles tendon issues, or something else, Dr. McCabe and his team will offer you options tailored to your individual needs. “We can handle cases as complicated as total ankle replacement and as simple as treatments for nail fungus,” he said. “But we always want to begin conservatively and progress, if we need to.”
When not on the job. Dr. McCabe enjoys
time outdoors with his family. “I love to hunt and fish,” he said. “I joke that, during duck season, work is what I do between duck hunts. I do want to give a big ‘thanks’ to my wife, Brooke. Without her, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. We feel blessed to be raising our family in such a loving and supportive community.”

DARIEN W. BRADFORD, MD
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Dr. Darien Bradford is quite literally a lifesaver. Hundreds of families have enjoyed holidays with their loved ones they never would have had if not for his skill and dedication. Brides have been walked down the aisle by fathers they almost lost to heart conditions. Grandparents have been present for the birth of grandchildren they didn’t think they’d live to see. And couples have celebrated anniversaries thankful for the talented thoracic surgeon who made their continued time together possible.
The daughter of one patient told it like this, “Dr. Bradford saved my father’s life! My dad needed emergency heart surgery and my entire family was terrified. Dr. Bradford came in and introduced himself. He was very pleasant and didn't speak over our heads like most doctors do. He was patient and answered all our questions. He even allowed my dad to pray over his hands. He came to see Dad multiple times after the surgery just to check on him and followed up with him twice, after he was discharged from the hospital. Without God and Dr. Bradford, I don't know if he’d be alive today.”
LEADER IN HIS FIELD
Dual-board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Bradford is a cardiothoracic surgeon trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the chest, esophagus, diaphragm, heart, lungs, and trachea. With 30 years of experience and a bedside manner and demeanor that puts his patients at ease, Dr. Bradford is a leader in his field, pioneering minimally invasive thoracic surgery technique and technology such as video and robotic-assisted surgery of the chest, heart, lungs, esophagus, diaphragm, and trachea.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE THORACIC SURGERY
These less invasive procedures mean more surgical precision, shorter recovery time, less risk of infection, negligible scarring, reduced hospital stays, less blood loss, less pain, fewer complications, and far greater success. He’s also responsible for introducing a new mechanical heart valve requiring less anticoagulation. Because each patient is unique, Dr. Bradford works closely with each individual and their physicians to tailor a treatment program designed specifi cally for them.
NEXT-GENERATION TECHNOLOGY
Dr. Bradford uses minimally invasive electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) to access diffi cult-to-reach areas of the lung, aiding in the diagnosis of lung disease and leading to earlier, personalized treatment, potentially saving lives. LungGPS technology, used in the Medtronic superDimension navigation system, is a remarkable way to maximize the ENB procedures, a method of obtaining lung tissue biopsies from peripheral regions. In fact, this superDimension
navigation system was nominated as “Best Medical Technology” by the Galien Foundation.
Dr. Bradford continues to lead the way with life-saving techniques, such as minimally invasive surgery for coronary artery disease, cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest wall, abnormalities of the great vessels and heart valves, as well as birth defects of the chest and heart. He’s now seeing patients at Mansfield Methodist Hospital. Find out more at BradfordMD.com.

ARLINGTON ORTHOPEDICS ASSOCIATION
Frank Rodriguez, MD
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT | PHOTO BY LAUREN MEDEAN
From the time he was a boy, Frank Rodriguez dreamed of a career in medicine. He did, that is, when he wasn’t dreaming of becoming a professional ballplayer. “I loved sports of all kinds,” he said. “If I wasn’t on the baseball field, I was shooting hoops in my driveway. If I wasn’t there, I was perfecting the perfect spiral with the pigskin.” Alas, a sports career wasn’t in the cards for young Frank. But that didn’t stop him from directing his love of sports another way.
As a lifelong athlete, he knew fi rsthand how an injury can land anyone on the sidelines. Now as an orthopedic surgeon, he’s able to help people from all walks of life reduce their pain and restore their bodies’ functionality and mobility. It’s something he’s been doing and loving for almost 30 years. There’s nothing more rewarding for Dr. Rodriguez than seeing patients who were once riddled with pain and limitations get back to the active life they love, whether that’s training for a marathon or being able to play on the fl oor with the grandkids.
As his practice has grown, he’s settled into a specialty in reconstruction, replacement, and arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, and knee. Patient education is a hallmark of his practice. He believes in spending time with each patient explaining their options, answering their questions, and putting their minds at ease. Patients are like family to Dr. Rodriquez. Some of them, for over twenty years, have trusted him with more than one joint replacement, and others have encouraged family members to come in for care, so Dr. Rodriguez was able to improve the lives of several members of the same family.
Dr. Rodriguez lives with his wife Kimberly, the love of his life, his best friend, and his wife of thirty-nine plus years (although we have been together for 42+ years). He and
Kimberly both agree that Texas is the best state to live in, and they’re proud to call it “home”. Together they’ve raised three kids and are keeping their fingers crossed for grandchildren. They love the Dallas Fort Worth area because it has the best combination of professional opportunities and lots of SPORTS!
In his free time, Dr. Rodriguez indulges his love of sports by cycling, going to college football games, and collecting sports memorabilia, especially sports cards from the ‘60s and ‘70s. In fact, some of his basketball card sets are the top cards in the world. The family dog, Duncan, the ninth Golden Retriever the Rodríguezes’ have owned over the years, even gets his name from former Spurs star, Tim Duncan. Dr. Rodriguez’s home-away-from-home is
Christ Chapel Bible Church in Burleson. He and his wife enjoy Bible study and putting God fi rst in everything they do. Dr. Rodriguez cherishes the opportunity to share the gospel with his patients and often prays with them before surgeries. Find out more at ArlingtonOrtho.com.

MANSFIELD FAMILY DENTISTRY
John Bauer, DDS Cody Bauer, DDS
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Much has changed, since Dr. John Bauer and his wife, Terri, opened their family dental practice, more than 40 years ago. They’ve raised their kids and entered those glorious grandparent years. They’ve welcomed their son, Dr. Cody Bauer, into the practice. As their beloved Mansfi eld has grown and fl ourished, they’ve participated in—even pioneered— dental advancements that have made dentistry gentler, more artistic, and far more precise. And generations of Mansfi eld families have come to think of Mansfi eld Family Dentistry as their dental home.
Each month, Teri and Dr. John are blessed to welcome patients they treated as children as they bring their own sons and daughters to Mansfi eld Family Dentistry. Dr. John and Dr. Cody begin seeing patients as soon as they’re ready to sit in the chair for routine cleaning. And the Bauer family offers them— and their parents and grandparents-everything from simple cleanings or fi lling to complete cosmetic procedures including teeth straightening and full-mouth makeovers. In fact, once a patient is comfortable under their care, there’s no need for them to be referred elsewhere for special services.
All the care they need can be found under one roof. “When we realize, during a routine check-up, for instance, that a patient needs a root canal, tooth extraction, or dental implant or when they inquire about a cosmetic procedure, we don’t want to refer them out to an unfamiliar dental practice,” Dr. John said. “Cody and I have undertaken hundreds of hours of continuing education every year and investing in the latest, cutting-edge dental technology, so we can provide our patients with cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening, porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, Invisalign clear braces, and permanent dental implants, right here in their dental home.”
Dr. John and Dr. Cody believe strongly in patient education and empowerment. “We want you to be your own best oral health advocate,” Dr. Cody said. “It’s not just about the health of your teeth but your overall health, as more is being discovered about the affect your oral health has on the rest of your body and on your chances of developing conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other serious illnesses. We take seriously our job to provide each patient with the tools they need for a lifetime of vibrant oral health. We want to be your partners in that journey.”
“Cody, Terri, and I along with our dynamic team of dental assistants and dental hygienists want every patient we see to feel like a member of our family because that’s what they are to us,” Dr. John said. “There’s nothing more rewarding to
us than building relationships with our patients and being able to watch them grow, from before they lose their baby teeth to the day they bring their own kids in to see us.”
If you’re searching for a true dental home for your family, fi nd out more at Mansfi eldDentistry.com.

SURGICAL ASSOCIATES OF MANSFIELD
Gary K Alexander, MD, FACS, CPE
Andrew Standerwick, MD, FACS
Joshua Trussell, MD, FACS, CPE
Ivan Cruz, MD
Jeremy Parcells, MD, FACS
The five highly experienced and trained surgeons at Surgical Associates of Mansfield are committed to treating people, not test results. With their dedication toward improving the lives of those they serve—every patient, every time—it’s no wonder they’re repeatedly voted Best General Surgeons and Best Bariatric Surgeons by the readers of Living Magazine and Best Doctors by D Magazine. This dynamic team of surgeons performs surgery at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center, a level-three trauma center named a Comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence with the consistently busiest robotic operating room in North Texas.
Many patients find their way to Surgical Associates of Mansfield upon the recommendation of their primarycare physician for help with hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and acid reflux, diverticulitis, gallbladder disease, or weight-loss surgical options. Although highly trained and experienced surgeons, they explore all noninvasive treatment options before recommending surgery.
Each SAM surgeon is trained and experienced in the robotic da Vinci Surgical System, offering patients a less-invasive surgery through smaller incisions, less scarring, and less risk of infection, resulting in shorter recovery times. Together they have performed thousands of successful surgeries, restoring quality of life to many of your DFW neighbors.
Practice founder Dr. Gary Alexander is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in surgery of the gastrointestinal tract, including heartburn/refl ux surgery, gallbladder surgery, and colon surgery. Since 2007, he’s performed thousands of procedures
including colonoscopy for diagnostic and cancer screening, thyroid surgery, breast surgery, vascular access surgery, and skin and soft tissue surgery.
Dr. Jeremy Parcells performs a wide range of procedures including hernia, gallbladder, anti-reflux, colorectal, bariatric surgery, and a full range of complex laparoscopic and robotic surgeries. “Robotic surgery represents the next stage of growth and innovation, allowing us to perform operations we’re already performing laparoscopically — only better,” he said.
As a broad-based general surgeon, Dr. Joshua Trussell performs common procedures for conditions such as gallbladder disease, appendicitis, small bowel disorders, and soft tissue infections and masses. He repairs all types of hernias, including advanced abdominal wall reconstruction and repair for large loss of domain incisional hernias. He specializes in surgeries for colon cancer and skin malignancies, including melanoma, and has experience in bariatric procedures, including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.
Dr. Andrew Standerwick performs a wide variety of procedures, focusing on
those involving the abdomen and related organs. He has a special interest in hiatal hernias, inguinal hernias, and anti-reflux surgery, and specializes in weight-loss surgeries, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and revision surgery.
Ivan Cruz, Jr., MD, FACS is a boardcertifi ed general surgeon with a special interest in treating colon cancer, gallbladder issues, acute appendicitis, umbilical hernias, inguinal hernias, hernias of the abdominal wall, and complications of peptic ulcer disease. He performs screening colonoscopies, upper GI endoscopies, and cyst and lipoma removals.

AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS – ADVANCED HEARING AID CENTER
Melissa Danchak, Au.D., CCC-A
Melissa Danchak, Owner/Audiologist at Kos/Danchak Audiology &
Dr.
Hearing Aids, and Advanced Hearing Aid Center of Fort Worth, and her staff, have been helping North Texans hear better for over 35 years.
“We want to help people hear the best they can, and we want to exceed the level of service they expect,” Dr. Danchak said. “Because your hearing health directly contributes to your overall wellbeing and quality-of-life, it makes sense to care for your hearing health the same way you do the rest of your health. We believe that better hearing health is an investment, not a transaction. The patient-fi rst approach we take and services we provide refl ect that belief.”
Millions of people experience limitations in their daily lives due to hearing loss. Unfortunately, many people wait upwards of 10 years to do something about their hearing needs. "The good news is that hearing loss can be treated. Today’s technology, which is supported by decades of research and clinical trials, provides an incredibly natural listening experience in all types of settings - especially when background noise is present and, on the telephone, which are the two most common areas our patients have the most challenges,” says Dr. Melissa Danchak.
The staff at both Kos/Danchak Audiology & Hearing Aids and Advanced Hearing Aid Center have decades of experience in helping patients in all walks of life. For example, helping a grandmother hear her grandchildren more clearly on the phone. They help a working professional hear better in their place of employment. They help people hear better in social settings and at their place of worship. "There are not many audiology practices in the North Texas area that have been helping people hear better as long as we have,” Dr. Danchak says. "We believe that how we meet with people and the delivery of
the services we provide is about giving an experience that makes people feel confident in their decision to address their hearing health care needs with us!”
Dr. Danchak and her staff are humbled by the positive feedback and reviews they have earned from satisfi ed patients. “They are sharing their experiences with our offi ce which helps others that are searching for an audiologist feel confi dent in making a decision to address their hearing health care needs!”
The fi rst step to hearing better begins with a discussion about the challenges you are having when it comes to hearing and understanding clearly. After a diagnostic hearing evaluation, a live listening demonstration with hearing devices is next. “One of the best ways to help someone realize how much better they can hear with hearing devices, is to provide them with that experience. Watching the almost immediate range of positive emotions when a patient realizes how much better, and more clearly, they can hear is really special,” Dr. Danchak says.
Your appointment will be informative and the best fi rst step to hearing the best you can! “Our goal is to ensure that you have a positive experience and that you understand your hearing health care needs and solutions we can provide.”

AMY SCHOENING, DDS
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Dr. Amy Schoening can tell you in one word what she loves most about practicing dentistry—relationships. As a family dentist in private practice, she treats generations of families, sometimes caring for kids and their parents and their grandparents. The time she spends chatting with them and sharing their dayto-day lives is what gets her out of bed each morning. In an era when big-box dental clinics are rushing patients through on a dental treadmill, Dr. Schoening offers her patients a dental home that’s small by design, where they can slow down and have their questions answered and where dental treatment never proceeds, until the patient understands exactly what to expect and why.
When patients visit this boutique dental practice, they know they’ll see Dr. Schoening herself—every time. And the dental assistants and hygienists will know them by name. “Having the skill to truly transform someone’s life by giving them a smile they can feel confi dent about is my passion,” she said. “I want to keep my practice small enough that I have time to tune into each individual patient and their needs—whether physical or emotional. I want them to feel like they’re the only patient I’ll see that day.”
With over 26 years of experience, Dr. Schoening is still passionate about reeducating herself on the latest techniques and technology. She hand-selected a staff that shares her patient-centric philosophy. Together they place an emphasis on patient education and empowerment. “When a patient understands why they’re doing something, they’re much more likely to do it,” she said.
“I want to thank my wonderfully supportive family and a team of people who’ve stuck with me and believed in my goals and visions,” Dr. Schoening said. “It’s
been an honor for me to build a boutique practice that reflects my philosophy and my vision for dental care. In the end, I hope the people I’ve known and touched— both personally and professionally—will remember me as a good person who cared for others, someone they could trust without hesitation.”
Dr. Schoening and her husband, Andy, were recently recognized at a ribbon cutting event honoring her long-time support of DHA and renaming it The Schoening Dental Clinic. The clinic is a nationally recognized non-profit with the goal of providing preventive and pain-relieving services to low-income residents as well as educating children about healthy oral hygiene habits. A mom of two, she enjoys reading, yoga, and traveling to Montana to ski in the winter and hike in the summer.
To provide her loyal patients with all the care they need under one roof, Dr. Schoening offers a full menu of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry including:
• Ultrasonic Cleanings
• Non-Surgical Gum Care
• Complete Full-Mouth Reconstruction
• Dentures and Partials

TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY
James Kelley, DO
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
James Kelley has no problem putting himself in his patients’ shoes. He knows all too well what it feels like to be on the receiving end of medical care. When he was a teen, a hip disorder landed him in a wheelchair for two years followed by a complete hip replacement at age 21. He learned fi rsthand the difference a compassionate and caring doctor can make, and that knowledge informs his practice of medicine, every day. For Dr. Kelley, one of the best aspects of his job is getting to know and care for his patients and the greatest compliment he can receive is when someone considers him to be “their doctor”.
“My goal is to provide my patients with a well-rounded and patient-centered approach to their urologic care, treating them as a whole person rather than just a disorder, diagnosis, or problem,” he said. “Patients tell me I’m easy to talk to, and they feel things were explained well and discussed in ways they can understand. Certainly, that began with me being a patient fi rst and a doctor second.”
That mindset also helps him understand the importance of serving as his patients’ advocate and taking the time to guide them toward the best options for their treatment. “No two patients are exactly the same,” he said. “I like to spend as much time as it takes with each patient so they can feel comfortable with treatment plans going forward. I always want them to feel they have a voice in making decisions about their own care.”
Urology has been the perfect specialty for
Dr. Kelley. “It’s a rapidly advancing fi eld where I can follow my patients for years,” he said. “And I’m able to treat problems that greatly improve my patients' quality of life. My goal is to treat every patient like a member of my family. They can rest assured any treatment options I discuss I’d also recommend to my family and friends.”
Dr. Kelley is trained in the DaVinci robotic surgery system, which allows him to provide a minimally invasive surgical approach for multiple urologic diseases. But although he is a skilled and experienced surgeon, he believes in exhausting all non-surgical options before recommending surgery.
In his free time, Dr. Kelley participates in patient education events to help spread awareness regarding men's health issues. There’s no doubt where his inspiration comes from though. “I’m most passionate about my family,” he said. “My beautiful wife, three daughters, and extended family are the most important things in the world to me. They’re the reason for everything I do.”
AT TEXAS CENTER FOR UROLOGY, DR. KELLEY TREATS AND MANAGES A WIDE VARIETY OF UROLOGIC ISSUES INCLUDING:
• Male and Female Bladder Complaints
• Kidney Stones
• Urologic Cancers
• Hormone Deficiencies
• Vasectomy
• Men’s Health
• Urinary Incontinence
• Prostate Problems
• Erectile Disfunction

METHODIST ORTHOPAEDIC SURGICAL ASSOCIATES
John R. Harris, MD
Edward M. Mairura, MD
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
When Josefina Ortiz began experiencing pain in her shoulder, she thought she could soldier through it. She tried physical therapy, but the pain got worse. Soon she couldn’t raise or move her arm, couldn’t drive, couldn’t dress herself, and couldn’t sleep at night. Her PT recommended Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates and Josefina scheduled shoulder surgery. Two months post-surgery, she was independent again, feeling great, sleeping nights, and able to play with her precious granddaughter again.
Josefina is just one of thousands of patients who’ve gotten their quality of life back thanks to “The Bone Docs”, John Harris and Edward Mairura. While they share the goal of getting patients of all ages back to living the life they love as quickly and safely as possible, the two men took different paths to their orthopaedic surgery career.
Edward Mairura had his fi rst experience with orthopaedics while accompanying his uncle to Mayo Clinic for treatment for osteosarcoma of the pelvis. “I met his treating orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Michael Yaszemski, and was intrigued by his level of compassion for my family, knowledge, bedside manner, and communication skills,” Dr. Mairura said “Dr. Yaszemski offered me the opportunity to work in his lab performing research. I knew I wanted to one day help people the way Dr. Yaszemski had helped my uncle.”
John Harris knew he wanted to practice medicine, to “help change people’s lives with new and exciting medical technology”. But it actually was an interest in woodworking, during his med school years, that sparked his interest in orthopaedics. “I fell in love with orthopaedics from the first case I saw that involved drills, screwdrivers, and tools just like the ones I used in my garage. It was fascinating, and I was hooked,” he said.
Dr. Mairura performs general orthopaedic surgery with a special interest in trauma, total knee replacements, anterior hip replacements, arthroscopic treatment of the knee, carpal tunnel, and trigger fingers. “I love listening to my patients’ needs and providing them with the best evidencebased options that maximize non-surgical treatment, considering surgery only after exploring all other options.”
While he is fellowship trained in sports and arthroscopy, Dr. Harris enjoys performing shoulder and knee replacements, fractures “from top to bottom” and especially knee and shoulder arthroscopy, and treating injuries such as ACL and meniscus tears, rotator cuff injuries and shoulder dislocations.
“We aim to show Christ’s love in all we do, and hopefully, help point patients back to God, to show His love and mercy in the tough times and give Him all the glory for the good outcomes,” Dr. Harris said.
Methodist Orthopaedic Surgical Associates is owned and operated by MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group and is staffed by independently practicing physicians who are employees of MedHealth/Methodist Medical Group. The physicians and staff who provide services at these sites are not employees or agents of Methodist Health System or any of its affiliated hospitals.

SOUTH ARLINGTON SMILES
Talon Davis, DDS
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT | PHOTO BY LAUREN MEDEAN
What does Dr. Talon Davis like most about dentistry? Changing lives! As a general dentist offering everything from routine fi llings, crowns, and dentures to root canals, extractions, tissue grafting, and dental implants, his goal is to treat people fi rst and their smiles second. His offi ce, South Arlington Smiles, is among the most technologically advanced dental practices in the state, focusing on fully digital techniques and utilizing AI software to improve patient outcomes.
A family dental practice in every sense, he and his team are comfortable treating folks of all ages and backgrounds, focusing on bringing JOY to dentistry. “We want our patients to enjoy their smiles as much as we enjoy our work,” he said. “We focus on our community impact, seeking to raise the level of dental education and care while providing services that are highly affordable.” Dr. Davis understands that changing someone’s smile can change their life, instilling a new level of confidence and happiness that was otherwise not possible. Toward that end, he invests in the most advanced technology that provides a unique mix of speed, efficiency, and precision and does all he can to keep wait times and procedure times as brief as possible.
As a healthcare provider, Dr. Davis is aware of the impact he can have on the lives of his patients as well as his staff members. “I’ve been an educator in one form or another most of my life,” he said. “From teaching music lessons as a teenager and at the collegiate level to helping staff members learn new techniques that will better serve our patients, to taking time to explain recommended treatments to our patients. We understand the discomfort
associated with going to the dentist and find that patient education can mitigate much of that fear. I never want to proceed with a procedure until our patient understands what to expect and why the procedure is necessary.”
Originally from Edmond, Oklahoma, Dr. Davis grew up playing the double bass in symphony orchestras, staying active in his church choir, and helping out in his family music studio. He completed two degrees in music performance and performed with major symphonies in the DFW area for years, before hearing a call to serve through dentistry. When not on the job, he still loves playing his double bass. He and his wife, Kristin, an orchestra director for Arlington ISD whom he met while an undergraduate, have a beautiful two-year-old daughter that’s the light of their lives.
Dr. Davis regularly volunteers at Mission Arlington providing dental services to the underserved and has set a goal this year for South Arlington Smiles to provide $50,000 in dental care to underserved communities throughout Arlington, Grand Prairie, and Mansfi eld. He’s also a big supporter of local school and health fairs where he offers dental health education. When time allows, he enjoys getting in as much golf and Sooner football as he can.
"We understand the discomfort associated with going to the dentist and find that patient education can mitigate much of that fear. I never want to proceed with a procedure until our patient understands what to expect and why the procedure is necessary.”

CITYVIEW AUDIOLOGY & HEARING AIDS, INC.
Diane Blaising, Au.D., ADA, ABA, FAAA
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
It should have been no surprise to Diane Blaising’s family when she found her calling helping others live a better life through improved hearing. Way back in elementary school, it was a young Diane who wowed her classmates with a science project demonstrating bone-conduction hearing.
“This was back when we had portable record players,” she says. “I took the record player to school, and instead of using the needle on the record, I had a sewing needle stuck into a pencil eraser. We’d hold the wooden end of the pencil between our teeth and place the needle on the turning record and could hear the record through our teeth and bones in our skulls. It’s not coming through your ear canals. It’s bone-conduction hearing.”
The workings of the human auditory system haven’t ceased to amaze Diane. Now, as a board-certified doctor of audiology, she’s discovered she likes the human side of audiology even more than the medical/science side. “I love the patient contact and making a difference in the lives of my patients the most,” she says. After more than 27 years serving as an audiologist, the last 15 with her own practice, Dr. Blaising provides a source for total hearing care. “I want my office to serve as a resource center for everything hearing,” she says. “I opened Cityview Audiology & Hearing Aids because I wanted to do more for my patients. For instance, we offer a free aural rehab class for anyone who wants to learn coping strategies for people with hearing loss and their families. Sometimes family members need a little education about how to communicate with the one with hearing diffi culties.”
Dr. Blaising says, “Our entire team joins me in our mission to help our patients obtain a better quality of life by enhancing
their ability to communicate with family and friends, leading to deeper, more meaningful relationships,” she says. “We love helping working men and women be more successful in their careers. We love helping grandparents have better communication with their grandchildren. We live in a time when hearing aid technology is extremely sophisticated, and we have the ability to treat any hearing loss successfully. Every patient is different. So we stay abreast of advancements in the programming software that allows us to correctly fit hearing instruments to each unique hearing loss.”
“Research is out now that proves hearing loss is a major contributing factor for dementia. Our office now offers our patients a cognitive domain screening. This helps us to help our patients as we treat their hearing loss.”
Dr. Diane Blaising began her career in audiology in 1992. She received her doctor of audiology degree from the Arizona School of Health Sciences and her master’s
degree in audiology from the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas. She has years of experience working with hearing-impaired adults and children in otolaryngologists’ offices and as a pediatric audiologist at the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Dr. Blaising is board-certified in audiology by the American Board of Audiology and has twice been given the Ace Award for continuing education. Find out more at CityviewHearing.com.

THE ORTHOPEDIC & SPORTS MEDICINE INSTITUTE, MANSFIELD
Nicholas E. Martin, MD G. Todd Moore, DO
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
The Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute may be new to the Mansfi eld area, but they’re certainly not new to orthopedics. OSMI has been the go-to orthopedic practice in Fort Worth for 11 years where Drs. Nick Martin and Todd Moore cared for patients of all ages, from newborn to over 100 years old.
MEET NICHOLAS E. MARTIN, MD
An Arlington native, Nick Martin traveled the country for his medical training. However, he and his wife always knew they wanted to return to DFW to care for the people of this community and to offer their two boys the same upbringing they’d enjoyed. Passionate about staying active himself, Dr. Martin spends his day helping others enjoy the activities they love. “I myself enjoy sports, golfi ng, and biking,” he said. “I believe people feel better when they’re moving. I love doing a job that helps people return to a more active lifestyle.”
An orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty in total-joint replacements, Dr. Martin completed an extra year of fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic where he focused on robotic hip and knee replacements. “I also specialize in the anterior hip approach,” he said. “This specialized training in robotics and the anterior hip approach gives patients better results with much less down time.”
“My goal as your orthopedic surgeon is to restore your mobility and improve your quality of life,” Dr. Martin said. “I take pride in watching my patients return to their favorite activities and sports. I chose a career in medicine because it allows me to help people on a daily basis.
MEET G. TODD MOORE, DO
Dr. Todd Moore is board certifi ed and fellowship trained in sports medicine
and orthopedic surgery. He specializes in all aspects of orthopedics with special interests in ACL injuries and shoulder instability, fracture care and pediatric orthopedics. “Kids are near and dear to my heart,” he said. “I have a special love for and skill with newborns, toddlers, and youth.” And the affection is mutual. In fact, many local physicians send their own kids to him.
A recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award for Most Compassionate Doctor, Dr. Moore has practiced orthopedic medicine in the Fort Worth area since 2012. With a bedside manner that’s attentive and deeply compassionate, he approaches patient care and medical decisions as though he’s making them for his own family.
A lifelong athlete and varsity football player at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Moore has coached sports, started a mentoring program for middle schoolers, and keeps himself fi t with running and resistance training. He’s a devoted father of two and he and his family live in Midlothian.
The Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute covers many local high school sports teams and offers a free walk-in clinic on Saturday mornings throughout football season. Find out more at OSMIFW.com.

METHODIST MOODY BRAIN AND SPINE INSTITUTE
Stephen Katzen, MD
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Nobody really wants to see a neurosurgeon. When they do, it’s because they’ve encountered injury or diseases/disorders of the brain, spinal cord, spinal column, or peripheral nerves throughout their body. What they need is someone who will sit down with them and really listen, who will reassure them, someone with the experience and training to take what is a devastating time of life and work to make it better. They want a highly skilled expert on their side who deeply cares about restoring their health and quality of life.
In fi ve-star online reviews, patients of Stephen Katzen describe him as just such a caring and capable specialist. One of them had this to say, “Dr. Katzen was very kind and caring with my 92-yearold mom who fractured two lower back vertebrae. Surgery was no option for her at her age, but he did do vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty (cement injections) on those two vertebrae. Dr. Katzen is very easy to talk to and it’s obvious he cares very deeply about his patients. I would highly recommend him!”
Jane H admits she and her husband had a negative attitude when they fi rst came to see Dr. Karzen. Who could blame them? They’d been shuffl ed from doctor to doctor and felt like no one listened or cared. All that changed in their very fi rst encounter with Dr. Katzen. “He was very patient, kind and understanding. He took time to explain the issues in words we could understand,” Jane said. “He made sure every one of our questions were answered and gave us peace of mind, for the fi rst time, since my husband started having issues. We felt like we were a team and that everything he did was for my husband’s good.”
With a special interest in treating degenerative conditions of the spine and tumors of the brain and spine, Dr. Katzen
sees many families like Jane’s who are feeling hopeless, when they meet him. The fi rst thing he wants to give them is an understanding of their condition. The second it hope. He also addresses many other neurosurgical conditions including trigeminal neuralgia, Chiari malformations, hydrocephalus, and cranial and spine trauma which can rob an individual—and a family—of their quality of life. It’s his blessing to do whatever he can to help restore it.
Born and raised in DFW, Stephen Katzen, MD, is a board-eligible neurosurgeon who practices at the Methodist Moody Brain and Spine Institute at both the Mansfield and Dallas locations. Dr. Katzen completed his undergraduate degree in Spanish from Tulane University in New Orleans and his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock. Following graduation,
Dr. Katzen completed his residency in neurological surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center Houston. He is fl uent in Spanish and English, and thoroughly enjoys traveling, playing classical piano, and spending time with his wife and their sweet daughter.

DIGESTIVE HEALTH CENTER OF REDBIRD
BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
Fact—colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the US. Fact—one in 23 men and one in 25 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. But the most important fact is that colorectal cancer is PREVENTABLE with proper routine screenings. Unfortunately, one in three adult Americans are not up to date on their colon cancer screening. Digestive Health Center of Redbird is committed to change that.
In this life, there are things we can control and things we cannot. Fortunately, colorectal cancer is in the latter category. In fact, 60% of the deaths which occur because of colorectal cancer could have been prevented with proper screening. That’s why the team at Digestive Health Center of Redbird are working to get the word out.
If you have no family history or other risk factor, you should begin routine colorectal screening at age 45 (sooner with risk factors). Digestive Health Center of Redbird make that easy, convenient, and affordable. Because their endoscopy centers are independent ambulatory surgery centers, they can perform your colonoscopy at a third of the cost of a hospital. Their skilled and experienced team has high patient satisfaction scores and numerous fi ve-star online reviews. They offer direct access screening colonoscopies which means if you are of screening age, have no family history of colon cancer, and are not currently experiencing any GI symptoms, you can schedule your colonoscopy procedure without an offi ce visit. Digestive Health Center of Redbird is one of six DHC locations in the North Texas area, so there’s no reason to delay your preventative screening.
Of course, you have probably seen athome colorectal testing kits advertised, but this isn’t an area where you want to DIY. Digestive Health Center of Redbird offer skilled, board-certified gastroenterologists who are trained and experienced in removing any precancerous polyps they may encounter during your procedure, an important proactive step that can potentially avoid a future color cancer diagnosis. (When at-home kits are positive, you are referred to a gastroenterologist. Why not simply start there?)
You can do your part to prevent colorectal cancer by maintaining a healthy weight and eating a healthy diet. If you smoke, quit. Get adequate exercise and keep alcohol consumption at a modest level. Heed the warning signs of colorectal cancer which include anemia, rectal bleeding, dark or black stool, a change in bowel habits, diarrhea and/or constipation, narrowing of stool, persistent abdominal discomfort (cramps, gas, pain, or feeling bloated), unexplained weight loss, weakness or fatigue, and nausea or vomiting. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please, consult your doctor who may recommend a colonoscopy.
The doctors and staff at Digestive Health Center of Redbird want you to know colorectal cancer is beatable in up to 90% of cases when detected early with appropriate screening performed by a
trained gastroenterologist. They want to partner with you to make sure that happens. Find out more at DHCofTX.com or call the central scheduling line at (972) 853-8610 to schedule your next screening.

EARLY screening
THE IMPORTANCE OF COLORECTAL HEALTH
BY PETE ALFANO
The magic number was 50, the age medical experts recommended most Americans with average risk should have their fi rst colorectal screening.
Until recently, early screenings, or colonoscopies, were primarily recommended for people with a family history of colon cancer. But because cancer society data revealed that 12% of cases in 2020 were diagnosed in people under 50, it advised that testing begin fi ve years sooner at age 45 for early detection.
You may not be aware that colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States, not counting skin cancers. It is another “silent cancer” because there are few initial symptoms, and some warning signs are often identified with the gastrointestinal (digestive) system. Thus, early detection is vital because colon cancer is considered more easily treatable and even curable if it is confined to the bowel. So, why is colon cancer becoming more prevalent among younger Americans? The culprit is a trio of familiar issues that affect overall health — obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and poor nutrition. They all, of course, go together. For example, it is more diffi cult to maintain a healthy weight without regular exercise. That doesn’t mean you have to train for a marathon. It can be as simple as going for a 30-minute walk most days.
Diet plays an important role, too. Eating food high in saturated fats and trans fats (think high-calorie processed foods) increases the risk of obesity and colon cancer. Both can
raise the leptin level in your blood — a hormone derived from adipose (fat) tissue and the small intestine, which helps regulate body weight. It should be obvious, then, that eating high-fi ber food found in fruit and vegetables, as well as fi sh, chicken, and lean red meat, will help regulate body weight. Researchers have also found that heavy alcohol consumption (more than two drinks a day for men, one for women) and smoking increase the risk of colon cancer and a host of other health issues.
The chances of being diagnosed with colorectal cancer increase with age, with people over 65 having a higher risk. But no matter your age, symptoms can surface that should not be ignored. Unfortunately, this is usually when the cancer has already developed. Among them is a change in bowel habits that cannot be attributed to another condition or medication, abdominal pain and cramping, rectal bleeding, which will be bright red in color, dark brown or black stool, which is another indication of bleeding, unexplained weight loss, and weakness and fatigue.
If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, your primary care physician or gastroenterologist may recommend a colonoscopy. The most unpleasant part of that procedure is drinking 64 ounces of a prescription laxative over two hours to clean out your colon. Patients are under moderate sedation during the actual procedure and usually recover in less than 24 hours. This minor annoyance is worth it to make sure that you do not have any concerning fi ndings.

SWIMSUIT season
PLAN AHEAD TO ROCK YOUR BIKINI BODY THIS SUMMER
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Are you ready to wear a trendy bikini or sexy one-piece cutout this summer with confi dence? Now is the ideal time to get started with cosmetic services that will help you reach your goal. Below are a few of the most popular services to consider.
BYE-BYE,
STUBBORN BODY FAT
Most of us have a few places that collect diet and exercise-resistant body fat. Luckily, there are effective treatment options that can reduce unwanted fat in time for swimsuit season. CoolScuplting, for example, freezes fat cells that die and are naturally flushed from the body. Technologies like truScuplt and BodyTite involve
66 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2023 aesthetics
controlled radiofrequency that melts fat cells. ScuptSure destroys fat using a laser and a specific wavelength of energy designed to pass through the skin without being absorbed and specifi cally targets fat tissue. Other systems use ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) to liquefy the fat.
Liposuction is another option. During this time-tested body-sculpting procedure, your plastic surgeon removes excess body fat by suction using special surgical equipment. Although liposuction requires a more extended recovery period than noninvasive fat reduction, results can be dramatic. Consult with experienced providers who will compare and contrast treatment options and recommend those designed to deliver the results you desire.
LESS CELLULITE, MORE CONFIDENCE
Some topical products may diminish the appearance of cellulite, but thanks to technological breakthroughs, it’s possible to achieve superior results. Minimal and noninvasive treatments use different types of energy to reduce cellulite, including Cellulase, VelaShape, Zimmer Z Wave, and ThermiSmooth body. Cellfina is an automated mechanical cellulite reduction treatment. You may also be interested in QWO, an injectable
that’s FDA-cleared to treat moderate to severe cellulite.
BREAST BOOST
Imagine fi lling out a swimsuit top or a strappy sundress and feeling more confident about your breast size and shape. Breast augmentation is a customized procedure tailored to your unique needs and physique. In addition to saline-filled implants, new-generation silicone gel breast implants are available in various shapes and have a more natural look and feel. Implant placement techniques vary and include virtually scarless procedures. Another option is “natural” breast enhancement using injected fat extracted from other areas of your body via liposuction.
FLAB TO FAB TUMMY
Pregnancy and weight gain and loss can permanently stretch abdominal skin and muscles to the point where dieting or exercise alone won’t restore a sleek silhouette. Tummy tuck surgery, a fl agship Mommy Makeover procedure, fl attens and reshapes the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the abdominal wall muscles. Each tummy tuck is custom-tailored to the patient, and other procedures may be included, such as liposuction, for beautifully sculpted results.
Begone Body Hair
Tired of shaving, waxing, and using chemical depilatories? Keeping unwanted body hair at bay is a constant battle, not to mention dealing with stubble, bumps, and unsightly and painful ingrown hairs. Now for some good news! Professional laser hair removal treatments have come a long way since the process was first commercially available in the mid-90s. Treatments can now effectively reduce hair growth and work on nearly any part of your body. Some technologies are touted as being effective for almost all skin types and tones.
Because your hair grows in many cycles, multiple sessions will be required. Most people achieve desired results in four to six treatments spread from four to six weeks apart. Periodic maintenance treatments are recommended to maintain your results.
Schedule a consultation with a laser hair removal specialist and see if you’re a good candidate.

In recent years, Korean beauty or K-beauty trends have really grown in popularity in the United States. From the use of sheet masks to more unique treatments like applying snail mucin to the face, many Americans have fully embraced these treatments as part of their beauty routine and as remedies to common skin care issues. Glass skin is one of the latest trends to emerge from the K-beauty ethos.
WHAT IS GLASS SKIN?
Glass skin refers to a complexion with a very smooth, ultrahydrated appearance that is so flawless it looks like glass. Overall, the skin is bright, even-toned, blemish-free, and appears poreless.
68 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2023 aesthetics
The true hallmark of glass skin is a luminous, lit-from-within appearance created by hydrating products designed to fi rm and plump skin.
HOW CAN I ACHIEVE IT?
Achieving glass skin involves a multi — eight or more — step process done twice daily (e.g., morning and night) and features ideal products for your skin that deeply cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and protect. As you build your glass skin regimen, it is important to remember that products should be layered from lightest to heaviest, allowing time for each to absorb before applying the next.
STEP-BY-STEP
Begin your routine with a K-beauty technique called double cleansing. Use an oil cleanser to remove all makeup and dirt from the face, then follow with a gentle foaming cleanser to reach deeper into the pores to clean and prepare the skin for exfoliation.
Next, use an exfoliator to remove dead skin cells. This is an important step in achieving a bright, porelesslooking complexion. If you are still determining whether physical or chemical exfoliation is best for your skin, consult a professional to learn how your skin may respond to each before you commit to and invest in a method.
At this point, it is paramount that you return the skin to its proper pH with a toner to prepare the skin to accept all the hydrating products to follow. Then apply an essence, another K-beauty technique, as your first layer of moisture. An essence is usually a water-based skin care product that contains a high content of active ingredients designed to restore hydration to the skin cells. Apply with your hands, gently pressing the product onto your face versus rubbing it on.
Adding a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid to firm and plump the skin is a great next step to build moisture deep within the layers of the skin. Hyaluronic acid is like a big drink of water to the skin at this point in the regimen. Then lock in that moisture with a lightweight face oil and then top that with a skin-appropriate hydrating moisturizer. And if it is daytime, apply sunscreen to protect the skin.
As you work through your routine, take time to assess what is working for you and what is not. Once you start seeing the results you desire, consider tweaking your regimen to add weekly sheet masks to boost hydration even more after toning the skin.
The Buzz About Mi crotox
If your skin exhibits fine lines or other common signs of aging, you may be a good candidate to revive your appearance with a microtox treatment. Microtox is a very precise, noninvasive technique of injecting a neuromodulator, such as Botox or Dysport, into the superficial layer of skin. This treatment aims to reduce pore size, lift, and tighten the skin, giving it a naturally refreshed appearance with no downtime.
A major benefit of microtox is that results typically appear much quicker than with traditional Botox because the injection is not delivered into the muscle. Depending on how fast your body metabolizes the neuromodulator used in this treatment, results may last three to four months or longer.

MAKE A SPLASH WITH DIFFERENT POOL DESIGNS AND FEATURES
BY ANNETTE BROOKS
Have you dreamed of transforming your backyard with a pool, creating a safe place to have fun, relax, cool off, entertain, and create lifelong memories? If you’re like most homeowners in Texas, the question isn’t if you should build a pool but what kind to build. Your available backyard space and budget play a role, but you also want a pool that fi ts your lifestyle and how you envision using it. Here are a few different options to consider. But if there’s one thing that isn’t an option, it’s choosing an experienced, highly reputable custom pool builder.
70 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2023 homestead
BACKYARD OASIS/RESORT-STYLE POOL
Make your backyard a resort-worthy destination featuring a pool with options like waterfalls and water curtains, caves to swim through, lazy rivers, tanning ledges, dramatic fi re features, a swim-up bar, and custom lighting effects. You may want to include a cabana and even a pool house with a bathroom. Or how about incorporating an outdoor kitchen and entertainment area into the design? With the right custom pool and outdoor living builder, the sky’s the limit if you have the space and budget.
INFINITY POOL
Custom-made to highlight a view or a landscape focal point, infi nity pools are designed with one or more walls just below the pool’s water level. The water flows over the wall, creating the illusion of a vanishing edge. A sloping lot or one with a few feet of drop-off is usually needed for an infi nity edge to work well.
COCKTAIL POOL
Do you envision relaxing in a pool bigger than a hot tub but smaller and not as deep as a regular pool? A cocktail pool may be just the ticket, especially if you have a smaller backyard. The design and size can be customized to fit your space and style and integrated into a patio or backyard living area.
PLUNGE POOL
Smaller than a traditional pool, a plunge pool is just deep enough for lounging, cooling off, and low-impact water exercise. The size can vary from around 6.5 to 10 feet wide and 10 to 22 feet long, and 5.5 to 7 feet deep, and the bottom is usually fl at.
LAP
POOL
These long, narrow, rectangular pools are designed primarily for swimming laps in the privacy of your backyard. A good length for a lap pool is at least 40 feet, and it can serve as a focal point for a narrow lot. Consider including features like a swim current generator.
“SPOOL”
A best-of-both-worlds option for homeowners, a spool is just what you think it might be — a pool and a spa. Often referred to by pool builders as a portmanteau (a blend of two words), spools are typically half the size of a typical in-ground outdoor pool and twice the length of a spa.
More Hot Features for a Cool Pool
Baja Shelf – If you enjoy soaking up the sun but not the summer heat, a Baja shelf is a great solution. Think of it as a wide top step into your pool where you can lounge and play in shallow water.
Lighting Effects – Make your pool come alive at night with programmable colored LED lighting. Whether you’re in the mood for a dramatic, illuminated nightscape or dynamic light show, let your pool builder show you all the lighting options to choose from.
Laminars – Like a deck jet but better, laminars emanate from the pool deck or coping and reach greater heights. They produce a larger, sleeker, arced water stream that holds its shape until it hits the pool’s surface, creating a serene scene that embodies beauty and relaxing elegance.
Reverse Infinity Pool – With most vanishing-edge pools, the water overflows a pool edge to seemingly blend into the horizon. As implied, the opposite occurs with this pool design. Instead, the water spills into an eye-catching, stylized catchment pool viewed from a spa, outdoor living area, or your patio.

COLOR TRENDS TO CONSIDER
Many of this year’s popular nature-inspired designs are all about finding comfort, embracing a fl exible lifestyle, and rediscovering joy. The most trend-worthy, forward-thinking, and livable colors reflect specific facets or emotions of life, so you can update your well-used spaces with thoughtful colors that evoke positive energy and lasting change.
Comfort and Contentment: If your goal is to create a space that envelopes you in comfort, consider a white with a yellow undertone that makes the room cozy, like a soft blanket, like Cozy White. Complement the softness with Southern Road, a muted clay that brings in brown undertones that suggest gentle contentment.
Calming Restoration: Tap into the calming tones of nature with Green Trellis, a hazy green with duality, bringing in both the great outdoors calm and liveliness. Another option is Everglade Deck, a deep midnight blue used as an elegant calming shade to restore the mind, body, and home.
Healthful, Mindful Living: Evoke a greater sense of health consciousness with a light blue that has a dose of softness used as a fresh neutral with uplifting qualities of a modern pastel, like Rising Tide. Reinforce the benefits of mindful living with Villa Grey, a cool color balanced by the warmth of the yellow undertone.
Connections and Joy: Establish spaces where you can celebrate relationships with others and happiness in your being. Consider hues like Gentle Violet, a harmonious shade promoted by digital connectivity. Evoke joy with a dependable classic tan like Holmes Cream, which features a yellow undertone that suggests new life with uplifting qualities.
Natural Balance: Bringing hints of the outdoors into a well-loved living space creates a soothing ambiance. Consider Ivory Brown, a warm neutral tone inspired by the shades found in nature, or Blue Arrow, a cooled-down blue that strikes a beautiful balance between cool and warm shades in your design.
Inspirational Thought: A work-from-home or crafting space needs color to inspire great thinking. Try a faded natural terracotta like Desert Carnation that sparks individuality and warmth or a deep blackened olive like Flora, an on-trend neutral that embodies charm and sophistication.

HOW TO PLAN A GARDEN THEY WILL LOVE
BY MIMI GREENWOOD KNIGHT
icture this. It’s early morning, and the sky’s still pink with the sunrise. There you sit, coffee cup in hand, companionable dog at your feet, watching the butterflies dance in and out of your flower garden. What could be more relaxing? If you’ve dreamed of just such a scene, it may be easier than you think.
Thanks to our diverse ecoregion and long growing season, Texas plays host to more butterfly species than any other state in the union. And whether you live on a sprawling ranch, a suburban homestead, or an urban condominium, it’s easy to attract these winged beauties into your life.
Design an Enticing Space
Butterflies don’t ask for much, but they do need six or more hours of sunlight — preferably midmorning to mid-afternoon — and shelter from the elements that can come from trees or plants and chemical-free soil.
DID YOU KNOW?
A GROUP OF BUTTERFLIES IS CALLED A “KALEIDOSCOPE.”
74 LIVINGMAGAZINE.NET | march 2023
Selecting Your Plants
Butterflies require both host plants and nectar plants. A host plant is one onto which butterflies, and moths lay their eggs and whose leaves provide a buffet for emerging caterpillars. Also known as larval host plants or caterpillar host plants, they’re usually native plants that have evolved alongside butterflies and moths. Since some butterflies will only lay their eggs on a specific plant, find out what plants it prefers if you hope to attract a specific species of butterflies. A well-known example of this host/ butterfly symbiosis is monarch butterflies and milkweed.
A nectar plant provides food for adult butterflies and moths who drink the nectar from their flowers. Because host plants provide food for butterflies in the caterpillar stage while nectar plants feed the creatures once they’ve metamorphosed into butterflies, your butterfly garden should include both.
Other Attractions
Since a butterfly can’t land on open water sources to drink, provide a birdbath or other structure with tiny stones and fresh water. Butterflies can safely land on the stones and drink water to hydrate. You can also provide a receptacle with wet sand from which they’ll draw minerals, a habit known as puddling. And lastly, because butterflies need sun for orientation and to warm their wings for flight, you can place some flat stones around your landscape for butterflies to rest and bask in the sun.
Go for Color
Adult butterflies are attracted to red, yellow, orange, pink, and purple blossoms with flat-topped or clustered blooms. Be sure to include flowers in those colors and plan your garden so that when one plant stops blooming, another begins. Or opt for plants such as lantana, vinca, or zinnia that bloom all summer long.
What you do to attract butterflies to your landscape will also attract other beneficial insects, such as native bees, dragonflies, and ladybugs. Together, they pollinate our world and provide food for birds, lizards, frogs, toads, wasps, and bats, contributing to the circle of life. And as English naturalist and author Sir David Attenborough put it, “That simple pleasure of looking at butterflies in the garden is calming to the soul and spirit and good for us all.”
Native Texas Plants Butterflies Can’t Resist
When planting to attract pollinators, it’s important to choose varieties that thrive in our ecoregion, including:
• Oak (Quercus), which plays host plant to hundreds of different butterflies and moths and has 44 varieties native to Texas
• Plum or cherry (Prunus) will add dramatic blooms to your spring landscape
• Willow (Salix), which is also the fastest-growing tree
• The Texas state tree, pecan (Carya), also feeds small mammals, birds, and humans
• Goldenrod (Solidago) plays host to 80 different butterflies and moths
• Sunflowers (Helianthus), a powerhouse host plant
• Prickly pear (Opuntia), the state plant of Texas
• Evening primrose (Oenothera), which acts as both a nectar and a host plant

CRASH COURSE
BY AUDREY SELLERS
The average American driver clocks plenty of time behind the wheel — about 17,600 minutes every week. All that time on the road amounts to about 14,260 miles a year per driver, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
While most of these trips are thankfully uneventful, accidents happen. You might get sideswiped, rear-ended, or caught up in a chain-reaction crash.
When you’re involved in an accident of any kind, you may feel a mix of emotions, from shock or anger to guilt or fear. However, remaining calm is important, especially if anyone is injured.
Staying calm after a collision can help make a stressful situation more manageable. Read on for some quick pointers on how to handle a car crash.

WHAT TO DO ON THE SCENE
If the accident has just happened, check to see if anyone is hurt and call 911 if needed. Then, move your vehicle out of traffic to a safe place. Put it in park and turn it off.
NEVER ACCEPT BLAME OR LIABILITY
It’s best to provide only the necessary information and remain polite and helpful. It may turn out that the other driver was at fault, so only discuss the incident with the police, your insurance provider, and medical professionals.
CONTACT THE POLICE
It’s smart to call the police even if you’re involved in only a minor accident. They can help block off the area if necessary and collect information from all the drivers. If you intend to take legal action, you can request a copy of the police report. Also, when police are on the scene, they can test if the other drivers are under the influence.
GET CRUCIAL DETAILS
While you wait for the police to arrive, you can gather important details, including insurance information, the names and contact information of the other drivers, and any witnesses.
You should also take photos of the vehicles involved, including license plates. If any property damage occurred, document this as well. Try to get photos from many different angles and ensure your pictures are clear.
WHAT TO DO AFTER THE ACCIDENT
Get in touch with your insurance provider to file an accident claim. If you require medical treatment following the accident, keep detailed notes of your injuries, medical visits, and treatments. Also, keep track of any missed work due to your injuries. You may also choose to call a lawyer following the crash. Share all your information with your attorney, including the police report, insurance information, and documented medical expenses.
Being involved in a car accident can be stressful and traumatic. You can get through the ordeal a little easier by following the tips above.
PLAN AHEAD
If an accident happens, you can be prepared by keeping these items in your vehicle: A first-aid kit . You can buy a ready-made kit at most pharmacies or create your own. Include things like gauze pads, adhesive bandages, disposable gloves, and antiseptic wash or wipes. It’s also a good idea to include a pain reliever like aspirin along with bottled water.
A blanket. This can help keep drivers or occupants warm while waiting for help to arrive. A blanket can also help calm someone who may have gone into shock following an accident.
Road flares. These help alert other drivers that your vehicle is disabled due to an accident or a breakdown. They’re especially helpful at night or during heavy rain, which can make it hard to see.
A flashlight. Keeping a flashlight handy can help you in many circumstances, from changing a flat tire after an accident to providing light when you’re exchanging information with other drivers. An auto escape tool. Choose one that you can clip to a visor or attach to your keychain. Should your vehicle become submerged in water, you can use the tool to break the car windows underwater. You can also use it to cut through a seatbelt if you are trapped.
