I came across this little snippet, originally...
PRODUCTION
...published in Country Life Magazine in 1922, “The window is open and a warm, delicious little breeze comes wandering in. It smells of magnolias and dogwood and it whispers in our ears enticing little stories of gurgling brooks and cool woods. Yes, we have got spring fever and got it bad.” It’s reassuring to realize how little things change. Spring in Texas still feels like the first spring ever. And even though I’ve lived through my share, God’s handiwork still astounds me every year. This month, I’m blessed to share the memories of a recent couples’ trip to Cabo San Lucas I enjoyed with my husband and some of my cousins where we walked on the pier, watched sunsets from the beach, visited yummy restaurants, watched the whales, had Godcentered conversations, solved the problems of the world, and stayed at the most heavenly villa in Cabo. It’s a vacation we’ll never forget. Be sure to take time this month to get out in God’s glorious creation. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven”. While that’s true all year round, it’s so easy to see and enjoy during spring.

The franchise has transitioned from a street racing story to an over-the-top action series since its first installment in 2001, meaning there’s probably a little something for anyone (and who doesn’t like The Rock?). FRUIT OF THE VINE
Listed below are a few areas in need of our attention as we step from the platform of today on to the train of the future. We may look to mind the gap between:
Our opinion and the truth of the Bible The amazing OB-GYN who delivered three of my five children is a godly man, full of wisdom, and an elder in his church. On occasion, we would engage in discussions about culture, the church, and Biblical values. I remember once asking his opinion on a particular issue and he replied, “As a Believer, I get no opinion. The Bible says…” and he went on to quote a passage of Scripture related to the topic we were discussing. We are bombarded with opinions on every side through social media—every mom, wife, economic advisor, teen, and CEO has a blog sharing their thoughts on politics, religion, fashion, and more. As followers of Christ, our opinions should ALWAYS align with the truth of God’s Word—otherwise, they are heretical. If we are wise, when asked to weigh in on a subject, whether menial or of great importance, we will start and end anchored in Scripture. My heart breaks as I read statements from those in the body of Christ which describe our society as fluid and their stance on sin as “evolving.” While culture does shift, and morality often erodes, the Word of God stands firm forever, neverchanging its views on right and wrong. In fact, God puts His Word above His name (Psalm 138:2). Yes, some passages are open to translation. No, not everything is a heaven or hell issue. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no man comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Jesus and the Word of God are one (John 1:1) and are the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). God does not evolve in His view of sin. Scripture is clear on the foundational truths—and before we begin blogging, we should accept God’s opinion as the only one that truly matters.
BY LISA JENKINS-MOORE
When I visited London in the late 90s, I utilized the subway system. Frequently, the announcement, “Mind the gap” would boom from the speakers. For those unfamiliar, the instruction was given as a warning to passengers loading and unloading from the subway. Essentially the short phrase meant, “Watch your step on and off the train because there’s a gap between the car and the platform.” In other words, the gap between where you are and where you’re going can be dangerous if overlooked.
20
Our knowledge of prayer and our engagement in intercession There are those that hold fast to the belief that God is in control, He is Sovereign, and nothing we do or don’t do will affect the outcome of His plan and purpose. God is Sovereign, and He often chooses to be in control, but the Bible is filled with evidence that we, as Believers, are expected to partner with Him. Prayer is one of the most powerful actions God has given us here on this earth. He tells us the effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. He reminds us in Ezekiel that He looked for a man to stand in the gap, but found none (Ezekiel 22:30). Let us be found faithful, standing in the gap for our friends, family, communities, government, nation, and the world, praying God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. We need intercessors now more than ever.

Our theology and our reality We know the Word of God is inspired, infallible, and given to us for correction, reproof, instruction, encouragement, and more (2 Timothy 3:16). Yet how many times do we face off against circumstances and not see the result we are told we will see in the Word? Rather than question the Bible’s validity or power, we must contend for truth, striving to align our experiences with the Word. Faith is not valid until it is tested. As we hold fast to the confession of our faith, He is faithful, and His Word will NEVER return void (Hebrews 10:23; Isaiah 55:11). Do not make the mistake of changing your theology to fit your reality; change your reality to reflect the truth of God’s Word. Seek to know God, rather than understand Him, and you will not be disappointed.
Our promises and our present position I am beyond thankful for the many promises I have been given over the years. Many of these are Scriptures which hold special meaning for particular circumstances or seasons. Others have been prophetic words, dreams, and visions. Hope arises in the promise and faith is increased with each fulfillment. Nevertheless, we all have promises still unfulfilled. Some have waited years, even decades, and yet still wait, struggling against disappointment and disillusionment. Our doubt questions whether we really heard, really saw, really experienced what we know we did, wondering if perhaps the promise was just a figment of our imagination. Long ago I heard someone say, “Don’t lose sight in the dark of what you know you had in the light.” Hold on to the dream you were given. Find out if you’ve taken necessary actions to step into the expected reality—if not, do something. If so, be still and wait on God, knowing He is faithful. As I write, I encourage myself, for I have not attained, but continue to strive to be holy (set apart) as He is holy. We know without faith, it is impossible to please God and faith without action is dead (Hebrews 11:6; James 2:17). As we step from the platform on to the train, let us be aware to mind the gap so we can fully enjoy the journey.

hat does your home say about you? When someone visits for the first time, do they see your personality and passions in the spaces around them? How do you feel when you return home each night or wake up each morning? Do the rooms inspire you? Do they awaken your creative side? Do they help you relax and unwind? For almost twenty years, the Landry Team has helped DFW residents realize spaces inside and outside their home or business that express the things they want to express: rooms that are functional, comfortable, and affordable, yet beautiful and unforgettable.
AWARD-WINNING TEAM There’s a reason this team of decorators has been chosen 30 times by magazine editors across North America as International Dream Room Winners. There’s a reason their spaces have been nationally published dozens of times. And there’s a reason Lisa Landry and her team of designers and support staff have been ranked #1 Decorating Den Interiors franchise team nationwide, out of a field of hundreds, and were named Living Magazine Reader’s Choice Best of Arlington and Mansfield. That reason is vision. As president of The Landry Team, and master licensee in Tarrant County, Lisa uses that vision and years of training to help local homeowners and businesses create spaces that reflect their taste and style as well as offering other designers a place where they can earn a living doing what they love.

Meadowbrook Memory Care A KOELSCH COMMUNITY BY MEREDITH KNIGHT
“Meadowbrook is a shining example of what nearly 60 years of experience in senior housing can create,” Koelsch explained. “We are so proud of our newest communities and grateful for the opportunity to share it with our Arlington neighbors.”
One of the hardest decisions many families will ever make is when to move a loved one into a memory care facility. One of the toughest conversations many grown children ever have is convincing an aging parent to get on board with the idea. But time and time again, as assisted living staff and administrators can attest, the parent or older loved one comes to realize assisted living was nothing to dread. On the contrary, for thousands of seniors around the country moving into a memory care or other assisted living community offers them a new lease on life; a second retirement where they’re freed from the worries of home maintenance and domestic chores such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry; free to socialize and enjoy a lively, fully-engaged life again. If memory loss is an issue, they benefit
24
greatly from an environment that, while it allows them to retain their feeling of independence, is specifically designed to help them navigate their day safely with a staff trained to respectfully redirect and encourage success and memory-stimulating activities.
THE KOELSCH LEGACY Some of the first to rethink the traditional model of the “old folks’ home” in this country were Emmett and Alice Koelsch, founders of Koelsch Senior Communities. Rather than barebones board and bed and nursing, they envision a vibrant neighborhood for seniors who still have a lot of living and socializing to do. That revolutionary vision began in 1958 with one senior living community but has thankfully become the architype for many assisted living communities in existence today.
A FAMILY TRADITION OF CARE Rather than the traditional institutional setting, the Koelschs provided a homey environment in their communities where seniors were invited to bring personal touches and encouraged to continue hobbies and activities they’d enjoyed all their lives, while investigating new ones. Socialization was encouraged and fostered. And Emmett and Alice raised their five children right there on site where they interacted with residents daily and learned to respect and value seniors as unique individuals who still have a lot to offer. Several of the Koelsch children, and now grandchildren, followed in the family business. Just as the elder Koelschs emphasized respectful, individualized care and independence for their residents, current CEO Aaron Koelsch and other family members do the same today. I
n October of 2010, I took the plunge to follow my call: I left a high-profile country radio morning show in Dallas/Fort Worth to start a life of ministry. I told my co-hosts first, which was by far the most difficult part. Afterward, I sat in the office of our program director. He looked me square in the eyes and asked me one question. “Are you sure about this?” I had never been more certain about anything, save marrying my husband. I nodded and said, “I’m sure.” “Well then,” he said, leaning back in his chair, “we’ll need to plan your exit strategy.”
EXIT STRATEGY: “a planned approach to terminating a situation in a way that will maximize benefit and/or minimize damage.” What is common is business could and should be practiced in our parenting. Your kids need to know that they will find themselves in an uncomfortable and dangerous position at some point. An exit strategy allows them to terminate the situation with the minimal amount of damage to their reputation.
HAZARDS AHEAD Do your kids have an escape plan? Even as young as five or six, our
26
Parental
Exit Strategy children experience challenging social situations. Teenagers navigate even rougher waters. With iPhones and social media, gone are the days when we made big mistakes in front of small audiences. Distracted drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers, and the pressure to follow the crowd is as overwhelming for them as it was for us. As parents, we can team up with our kids as silent partners, giving them confidence that they can turn to us when they need a way out of a sticky situation. When I speak to moms’ groups, I cannot overemphasize the value in setting realistic expectations—for our kids and us. Our children will be exposed to pornography. They will be pressured to smoke, drink, and do drugs. They will be pressured into sexual activity. They will be in a situation where their driver is impaired, and they are forced to make a decision. Therefore, we must ask ourselves two questions: Will I allow them to be blindsided? Will I provide them a way out?
START EARLY We crafted a simple escape plan when my daughter was the tender age of six. Caitlyn was in first grade when she received her first birthday slumber party invitation. I thought
she was far too young, but we knew the parents and decided to give it a try. Before we left the house, I gave her the rundown. “Sweetie, you do not have to spend the night.” “I want to, mommy!” “But if you want to come home, just tell Avery’s mommy that you need to make a phone call.” “I won’t need to, mommy.” “You probably won’t, honey. But here’s the thing—you’ve never slept anywhere but home or Grandma’s house. If you get homesick, it’s okay. I will come and get you.” Part of the appeal of a parental exit strategy is that it prepares our children for an unfavorable outcome to a favorite activity. I warned my daughter in advance that she might get homesick. If she did, there was a way out. L I V I NGMAGAZ IN E . N E T
TOUGH TIMES FOR TWEENS Now my children are nine and ten, and the game has changed a little bit. Caitlyn has a friend who has been exposed to “sexting.” Another one of her friends deleted her Kik Messenger app when a stranger began sending her unwelcome texts. Several weeks ago the school counselor called me to let me know that a classmate of my nine-year-old son’s had explicitly described pornography to Nick and a few other little boys. She was shocked at my response. “It’s okay,” I said, “We’ve been expecting this.” “Eh-excuse me?” “Really,” I insisted, “It’s not if they get exposed, it’s when they get exposed.” I went on to explain to her that I had warned my children several years ago that there would come a day when one of their buddies wanted to show them naughty things on their phones, tablets, or computers. A PR IL 2 01 7
“When they do,” I said, “you need to excuse yourself and find an adult.” “Well,” the counselor replied, “that’s exactly what Nick did. He told his friend he had to go to the bathroom and then he told the teacher.” The Apostle Paul assured the new believers in Corinth that God is a God with an exit strategy.
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. —1 Corinthians 10:12-13 NIV The temptation to follow the crowd is tremendous. Our kids and teens need to know that and to know that we get it. They need to know that they can
text us at any time and we will drop what we’re doing and pick them up, no questions asked (at least not immediately). Blogger Bert Fulks, who ministers to teens battling addiction, offers a solution called “The X-Plan” in which the child/tween/teen texts their parent/sibling/friend the letter “x.” Whoever receives the x responds immediately by calling them back. When they answer the phone, the parent/sibling/friend tells them that something has happened and they need to be ready to go in five minutes. As parents, we don’t want to live in fear, but we do want to walk in wisdom. Our kids need room to make mistakes, but a prudent parent provides a safety net. Offer an escape plan and reward them when they use it. The goal is to raise responsible men and women capable of making wise decisions. Let’s remove as many barriers as we can.

Insider Secrets to Health and Satisfaction

ver wished you had an inside track to wellness, looking younger, and having a meaningful relationship? This month, we’ll look at some great advice from those in the know. Read on, as we uncover the best ways to achieve a healthier, happier you. As always, when it comes to your health, remember to consult your physician with any questions or concerns. BEING A GOOD PARTNER
Satisfaction in our lives is often impacted by our significant other. Many hope for a better marriage or a deeper connection. While joy in a relationship may seem important, clinical psychologist Paul Chafetz, PhD, points out that a meaningful bond can be the remedy. Cheerfulness can be ruined by daily stress that may result in mood changes. Knowing how to deal with your partner on an ongoing basis is vital. “In assertiveness, each learns to use words to communicate clearly and firmly, but also respectfully and constructively,” Dr. Chafetz, who practices in Dallas, explains. Naturally, being a good listener means patiently hearing another’s opinions, feelings, or wishes as well as showing respect and appreciation.
“Avoid becoming defensive and responding with counter-complaints,” Dr. Chafetz warns. When it comes to expectations for a fulfilling marriage, it’s important to be realistic. Marriage, according to Dr. Chafetz, isn’t a 50/50 deal. Instead, try to be giving—instead of taking—60 percent of the time. “As we show more humility, kindness, assertiveness, gratitude, respect, generosity, and self-control, we will find ourselves with a more pleasant spouse,” he adds. KEEPING ACTIVE AND STAYING SVELTE
A weekly exercise routine is another ideal way to boost your satisfaction in life. Choosing the optimum time of day is the secret. “Morning is usually better. That way, you don’t have the potential for deadlines and schedule conflicts to prevent L I V I NGMAGAZ IN E . N E T

SEEING IS BELIEVING
Having the right CPA means you can have more moments like these.
Protecting eyesight is a vital part of being healthy. Matthew Crookston, OD, Professor of Geometric and Ophthalmic Optics at UTMB, has some advice. “Children should use safety eye wear when needed, including sun protection. Parents should help children form good nutrition habits that include green, leafy vegetables,” he states. Regular eye exams are also a must.
you from exercising,” says Douglas Paddon-Jones, PhD, professor in the Department of Nutrition and Metabolism at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. If you or your kids play sports, Dr. Paddon-Jones has these tips on preventing injury: maintain consistency in training, include a rest framework in your routine, and optimize your daily nutrition. To win the battle of the bulge, it’s important not to set unrealistic goals. “The best diet is one you can keep,” states Robert Slater III, MD, UTMB Department of Family Medicine. Start off with foods that look like nature itself. Next, get to work in the kitchen. The best way to know what’s in your food and control caloric intake is to prepare it yourself. Eat veggies, fruits, and whole grains. Avoid processed foods, and reduce sugar and artificial sweeteners. The secret to a healthy gut? “Eat more fermented foods, such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso,” Dr. Slater explains. ADIOS TO ACHES AND PAINS
Going natural can be an ideal treatment for headaches. If you’re feeling creative, try some hush-hush home remedies. “Fish oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be useful for some headaches, and butterbur
30
may reduce headache frequency by 50 percent,” says Dr. Slater. Butterbur— from the sunflower family—is found in over-the-counter products. Caffeine can also be helpful for headaches, with coffee and tea being the healthiest options, according to Dr. Slater. Mother Nature can also be a remedy for a cold. Herbs in tablets like echinacea and andrographis can be helpful. A root known as astragalus, found in pill form, may be worth a try because of its immune-building abilities. Elderberry as syrup, capsules, or lozenges might also bring relief. To stave off a cold, try looking in the fridge—Fred Campbell, MD, internal medicine physician with UT Health San Antonio, suggests stocking up on vitamin C and garlic. To clear nasal passages, Dr. Slater recommends saline sprays. Another common ailment is neck pain. If you haven’t recently been in an accident, stress due to long work hours may be the culprit. “In situations where reducing work is impossible, a neck pillow, heating or cooling pads, or frequent breaks to change position are helpful,” Dr. Campbell says. Regular, gentle stretching of the neck muscles can also provide relief. For inflammation reduction, try omega-3 fatty acids like fish oil.
If you want to combat aging, the secret is skin deep. “If you do one step daily— use sunscreen to reduce risk of wrinkles, and it may reverse premature photoaging,” states Christa Tomc, OD, of Westlake Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in Austin. Her suggested regimen includes twice daily cleansing followed by a growth factor cream or antioxidant for rejuvenation. Next, use medications to correct fine lines, puffiness, and dark spots. At night, apply a treatment that builds collagen and improves skin texture. Lastly, hydrate twice daily with moisturizer.

If you’re one of the fortunate who have never needed corrective lenses, chances are that’ll eventually change. “Around age 45, the eye weakens and has trouble focusing at close range,” explains Kevin Merkley, MD, Chairman of UTMB Ophthalmology. That’s why he recommends a complete eye exam at 45 or so with routine follow-ups. After age 60, pay special attention to your eyes. HEALTHY SKIN

Her number one secret is to wear broad spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher, that’s water resistant. Remember to reapply every two hours. We can’t avoid getting older, but we can certainly look and feel younger. If you’re tasked with treating acne in adolescence or adulthood, it can feel like an uphill battle. Dr. Tomc recommends being gentle with face washing since harsh cleansers tend to make acne worse. Prescriptions are effective, but make sure you follow doctor’s orders for maximum effectiveness. Be patient. Improvement in your skin condition may take at least three months. Once you find a regimen that works, stick with it. L I V I NGMAGAZ IN E . N E T

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR SOME WARNING SIGNS OF A FAILING FOUNDATION!
HOME MAINTENANCE MONTHLY
If you notice more than one of these issues and haven’t recently had remedial foundation work done, it’s probably in your best interest to have a structural engineer or foundation repair professional assess your situation before things become worse.
Foundation 101
Perhaps the most critical element of the house, one that we use every day but hopefully never notice (as long as it’s doing its job correctly), is the foundation. Holding your home nice and steady on Texas soil—with its significant clay content and unique expansion and contraction characteristics—your foundation is susceptible to damage over time, even if you do everything correctly as a home owner. Foundation damage will cascade, causing damage to structural elements, plumbing, and much more. Whether you’ve got a standard concrete slab foundation or a pier and beam setup, the same sorts of issues can occur as a result of heavy rain, extended dry periods, inadequate drainage, or other moisture-based factors that cause the packed soil to shift. Stop down for a moment this month to take a look around your house for a few of these signs of possible foundation trouble. If you find trouble—or even just discover that everything is looking good—we’ve got some tips to help you identify problems and implement good damageprevention practices.
34
GIVE YOUR FOUNDATION A LITTLE EXTRA SUPPORT WITH THESE PREVENTATIVE CARE TIPS!
Keep standing water away from your foundation by ensuring the grade of your soil slopes away from the house and foundation
• Doors or windows that are stuck, hard to operate, or have newly misaligned hardware like latches, locks, or strike plates that don’t match up • Large cracks running up walls, through drywall, or at joints • External cracking along mortar lines where bricks are joined, or “stair-step” style cracking and separating of brick • Interior floor bulges, pits, or heavily uneven floors that slant significantly • Interior or exterior doors that slowly swing open or closed, especially ones that used to operate normally • Cracks or hairline splits in wall or floor tile running across surfaces • Connections between ceilings and walls that appear to be separating or cracked • For pre-owned homes, obvious signs of prior crack patching with no record of foundation repair work

Keep track of cracks or other damage you suspect to be foundation related, and mark or measure them on a regular basis to monitor their progress
Maintain a constant, uniform moisture level by using a controlled watering plan—usually with soaker hoses set back slightly from your home’s perimeter
Consider consulting with a landscaper to add root barricades to protect tree roots from moving under the house, where they will consume water and cause unevenness in the soil
Don’t water cracks in the soil, as this can cause larger shifts in soil levels below the surface, where they can have a greater effect
Check for leaks regularly at the meter and with a licensed inspector, as under-slab leaks can rapidly cause foundation trouble L I V I NGMAGAZ IN E . N E T

Easy Living in a Backyard Paradise A few great ways to make your back yard sing this spring BY JESSICA TOMES
A really great back yard isn’t just pleasing to the eye (though this is an added bonus). More importantly, a really great back yard facilitates a safe and secure place for your family to live, play, and grow old together—a place for family meals, spur of the moment gatherings, and festive celebrations with friends. When done right, a back yard is so much more. More livable space. More square footage. More memories in the making. Sounds like a dream come true, right? But what are the necessary elements for punching up your own back yard? You’re probably going to want to have an outdoor kitchen. Spring in Texas is the perfect time to cook and enjoy a family meal outdoors. You will probably want to have a sink, a grill, and some countertop prep space
36
(at the bare minimum). An outdoor beverage fridge is always a nice addition. And if you’ve got a pool, you have to worry about toweling off so that you’re not dripping all over the house for those quick kitchen runs.
WHY NOT GO AHEAD AND MAKE THINGS EASY FOR YOURSELF? Create shady reprieves. Even sun lovers need a little relief from its rays! (And besides, too much sun really isn’t good for your skin.) A covered patio or deck is always a good idea when you’re designing your personal backyard oasis. A few oversized umbrellas placed strategically around the yard or pool, and landscaping—think tall, mature trees—can also help to keep your family cool and comfortable in the heat. Outdoor structures like gazebos, pergolas, and trellises can help to define otherwise open space.
ZIG ZAG STRIPE
Furnish for comfort. And durability. You obviously want your outdoor space to be stylish, but you also need to think practically when selecting outdoor furniture and decor. Whatever you choose needs to be able to stand up to the elements. Wrought iron, aluminum, and traditional wood are classically obvious choices.

“We absolutely love to have dinner outside at our dining table. It’s the perfect setting for hosting friends and family, or just having a dinner with our little family,” says Cristy Resendez. “We catch a nice breeze where our table is positioned, and having dinner with only the chandelier on makes for a relaxing meal.” Is a backyard even a backyard without a swimming pool? Maybe, but in Texas a swimming pool is almost a necessity. How else are you going to keep from melting in July and August? In the early spring (and sometimes fall and winter), before it’s warm enough to really go for a dip, consider a hot tub—a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors after a long, hard day. “We wanted to create a space that was fun for the kids, but also relaxing for us. I love our pool area,” says Kim Smeltzer. “Everyone in the family is happy out there! I love the tranquility; the sound of the pool is so relaxing. I even enjoy going out there in the winter, just to curl up in a lawn chair with a cup of coffee.”
38
Good outdoor lighting (we’re still crushing on those trendy, hanging Edison bulbs), ceiling fans, fire pits, and fireplaces (or portable heaters) are also nice things to have. Any steps or walkways should always be illuminated for safety. Fountains add an element of zen (the sound of trickling water), and can serve as a lovely focal point. Don’t forget your accessories! Weatherproof throw pillows in cute, colorful patterns, decor items that are safe for the outdoors, and melamine dinnerware add a punch of pizzazz and personality. Colorful, aromatic flowers and plants help to create the perfect vibe.

ant to achieve a more youthful, rested, refreshed appearance without surgery? Go under the needle instead. Injectable aesthetic procedures typically require little to no downtime, yet can deliver noticeable, natural-looking results when performed by a well-trained and experienced professional. With a growing variety of injectables available today, it can be confusing to keep track of what’s what. We’ve pulled together information on some of the most popular injectable products to help you make sense of it all. BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A “WRINKLE RELAXERS”
Wrinkle relaxing neurotoxins can soften the appearance of wrinkles commonly located between the brows, crows-feet around the eyes, and horizontal forehead creases. They work by locking signals from the nerves to the muscles so the injected muscle can no longer contract. Botulinum Toxin Type A injections usually take effect within five to seven days of treatment, with final results occurring around two weeks. Visible results typically last for about three months, and sometimes up to around six months. In addition to Botox Cosmetic (FDA-cleared in 2002), Dysport was FDA-cleared in 2009, and most recently, Xeomin (“ZEE-oh-min”). Each has a bit of a different twist.
40
Botox and Dysport have protective proteins clustered around the active part of the molecule, while Xeomin—sometimes referred to as “naked Botox”—has no additive surface proteins. In theory, the absence of protein carriers can result in fewer allergic reactions or resistance to Xeomin. Compared to Botox, the Dysport protein is slightly smaller, so it may work more quickly than Botox. What’s the bottom line with these three competitors? It appears to depend on the technique of injection and the treated patient’s anatomy. Discover which product you prefer by seeking out a provider who offers more than one option. He or she can recommend a brand based on your specific goals and needs.

AESTHETICS You may also try different options over time, then determine for yourself which brand you personally prefer. TEMPORARY DERMAL FILLERS
Fillers plump the treated area to the point where the wrinkle, depression, or fold is minimized. Since they can enhance tissue shape and volume, fillers are used to augment the lips, “lift” and plump the cheeks, and fill out depressions (hollows) under the eye area, among other things. Depending on the type of filler used, the effects can last from around six months to more than a year. Several brands of FDA-cleared hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are available today, including Boletero Balance, Elevess, Perlane, and Captique. Restylane and Juvéderm have developed a collection of evolved products under those brand names. Each comes with its own unique

Kybella is currently the only FDA-cleared injectable treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin to reduce fullness in the treated area and thus help improve your profile. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat. The “vampire facial” or “vampire facelift” is a catchy name for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. Your own blood is processed to isolate the platelet-rich plasma, then the PRP solution is injected to help create a more youthful look. Sometimes hyaluronic acid is added to the “vampire lift” mixture. Some medical professionals applaud the efficacy of this treatment while others are skeptical.
Injectables don’t require surgery, but there is still a lot at stake. Make sure you put yourself in the hands of only the most qualified and highly-trained expert available. Also, remember to ask your provider about the risks, then determine if an injectable is right for you.

Wearing hearing aids has given me the edge I need to get back in the game. Little can prepare you for the first time you sit atop a bougainvillea-draped balcony and spot one of these 40-ton creatures breaching the water and launching its body effortlessly through the air. Breathtaking doesn’t begin to cover it. Then you see another and another. With Cabo situated between their winter feeding ground in the Arctic and their breeding grounds in Mexico, it’s popular with humpbacks, gray whales, and blue whale for mating, calving, and hunting, throughout the spring and early summer.
And if the view from your seaside balcony only whet your appetite for more, hop aboard a whale-watching boat where marine biologists escort you to sea lion and sea bird colonies, actually guaranteeing you’ll experience whales and dolphins, taking you close enough to touch the majestic mammals then offering you marine hydrophones through which you can eavesdrop on whale songs. Whatever you do, don’t forget your camera. Cabo is a paradise vacation destination you’ll want to forget forever.
Celebs in Cabo
Cabo San Lucas is popular with celebrity types. After People Magazine named Jennifer Aniston The World’s Most Beautiful Woman, she celebrated with a trip to where else? Cabo! Ashley Simpson is reported to jet down to Cabo every chance she gets. And Olympic superstar Michael Phelps found Cabo to be the perfect spot to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Johnson.

HOORAY FOR SUMMER CAMP! BY ANNETTE BROOKS
“I’m bored! What can I do?”
Sound familiar? Instead wracking your brain for ways to keep the kids busy over summer break, consider signing them up for camp. Camp helps children stay occupied and engaged, and provides opportunities to socialize, experience different things, and learn new skills. Whether it’s a nearby day camp or a sleepaway camp, your child will likely grow from his or her experiences there.
In the year 1900 there were fewer than 100 camps in the country. By 1918, there were more than 1,000. Today, more than 14,000 day and resident camps exist in the United States.

What Kind of Camp Will Best Suit Your Child?
Once you start checking out summer camps—day camps and sleepaway camps alike—you’ll quickly realize there are numerous types to choose from. Here are some preliminary questions to ask yourself before embarking on a search. Is your child ready for a communing with nature type of camp experience, or would a more resort-like camp bestsuit him or her? Are you looking for a faith-based camp? Would your child benefit from attending a healthrelated camp that involves eating right and exercising? Does your child have special needs or quirks that the camp must be prepared to accommodate? Would your child be interested in a specialized camp? For instance, there are camps for athletes, equestrians, foreign languages, science camps, and arts and theatre camps. There are even camps for thrill seekers, such as a teen program where kids visit various amusement parks and try out different roller coasters all over the country.
Whether you’re looking for day camp or sleepaway camp, in addition to getting referrals, reading reviews, and researching activities, look beneath the surface. Call and talk to camp administrators, and don’t be shy about asking questions. Many online resources provide questions to ask—and it never hurts to have a conversation.

While no two patients are alike, all our patients have one thing in common. They want relief from a painful condition that’s preventing them from enjoying life to the fullest. Many patients come to us as a last resort before turning to prescription drugs, injections or surgery. Although our treatment methods have a high success rate, no ethical healthcare practitioner can guarantee results. What we can guarantee is that if you schedule and adhere to your treatment plan and you don’t get the results you expected, we will continue to treat you at no charge for up to a full year or until you do get results, whichever is sooner. We stand behind our treatments because we want you to feel 100% comfortable when you come to us. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Call us at 817-453-3999 to schedule your exam and consultation.

Can You Keep a Secret? Our resident chef shares her
secret Easter recipes
BY MEGHAN BASSETT
Usually, I’m not one to share my family recipes. There’s something sacred about them (and I secretly love being able to wow people…), so I tend to hold them near and dear to my heart. But with spring here and Easter hopping this way, I happen to be in a sharing mood! My family has been preparing this feast year after year, and I hope these dishes will bring your whole family to the table!
BROWN SUGAR BOURBON GLAZED ROASTED CHICKEN Serves 4 to 6.
FOR THE CHICKEN: 1 5 pound whole chicken, giblets and other parts removed 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 4 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 2 lemons
FOR THE GLAZE: 1½ cups bourbon 1¼ cups brown sugar 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon honey 1½ teaspoons apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Preheat oven to 425°F.
Use the leftover roasted chicken carcass to make a great chicken noodle soup for the rest of the week! Make sure you put the roasted chicken in a rimmed dish when you pour the glaze over it. No one wants bourbon glaze all over the tablecloth!
Pat chicken dry, then carefully rub the butter under the skin of the chicken. Rub the outside of the chicken with olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Halve both lemons and add them to the cavity of the chicken. Tie legs with twine. Add chicken to a roasting pan or cast-iron skillet. Roast chicken for 75 minutes. Remove from oven and rest 10 to 15 minutes. While the chicken is resting, combine bourbon, sugar, garlic, honey, vinegar, and Worcestershire for the glaze in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Simmer for 10 to 12 minutes. When reduced by half, pour glaze over roasted chicken. Serve immediately.

COCONUT LAYER CAKE
FOR THE CAKE:
Make the deviled eggs up to one day in advance! Stop just before you fill the egg whites and keep the whites separate from the yolk mixture. Fill, garnish, and serve. CLASSIC DEVILED EGGS Makes 12. 6 eggs ¼ cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon yellow mustard 1 pinch of salt ¼ teaspoon pepper smoked paprika, for garnish In a medium saucepan, add eggs in a single layer to the pan. Fill the pan with cold water until it is 1” above the eggs. Bring water to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and cover. Let rest for 10 to 11 minutes. Remove eggs from the hot water and gently crack all around each egg. Add to a bowl of ice water and let rest for 1 minute. Peel eggs. Cut each egg in half and gently scoop out the yolks into a medium bowl. Mash yolks with a fork. Stir in vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper until smooth. Fill each empty egg half with the yolk mixture. Sprinkle with smoked paprika. Chill until ready to serve.
¾ pound unsalted butter, room temperature 2 cups sugar 5 eggs 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon almond extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 5 ounces sweetened, shredded coconut
FOR THE FROSTING: 16 ounces cream cheese, room temperature ½ pound unsalted butter, room temperature 1¼ teaspoons vanilla extract 1 pound confectioner’s sugar 7 ounces sweetened shredded coconut Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease two 9” cake pans with butter and dust with flour, tapping out any excess flour. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl. Set aside. In a bowl of a stand mixer, beat butter and sugar for the cake together until creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating to combine between each addition. Beat in extracts until combined. Alternate between adding the dry ingredients and the milk, in three parts, until mixed in and well-combined. Fold in shredded coconut for the cake. Divide batter between the two cake pans. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through. Cool completely. To make the frosting, combine cream cheese, butter, and vanilla extract with an electric mixer until smooth. Add in sugar and mix until combined. Frost and assemble to two layer cake. Add the remaining coconut to the outside of the cake as decoration. Serve.
