–Edgar Moskopp I thought summer would never return. But it’s back and with it dreams of the perfect family vacation. We started a new tradition last year with our grandchildren. As each child turns five, they get to roll with Mimi and Poppy on a summer adventure. Last year was our first trip together and we braved Sea World. We came home limping, but it was well worth it. We had a blast! And the funny saying and stories went on for months. This year we’re planning a trip to Galveston with three granddaughters, ages five, seven, and nine. What memories we’ll make. One kooky thing we did last year, in honor of my brother who’s in the private forces, was to teach the kiddoes to answer all questions with a resounding, “Ma’am, yes, ma’am” or “Sir, yes, sir”. They still do it occasionally, when they’re over, and we all get a big laugh. Can’t wait to make more memories this year. You’ll find your Living Magazine crammed with summer fun this month along with ideas for catching some muchneeded downtime, enjoying summer’s bounty at the dinner table, and rocking those summer fashions. The commute for a lot of Mansfield residents just got easier.

MANSFIELD

The 360 Tollway was more than 34 years in the making. Community leaders worked tirelessly for decades to ensure SH 360 would extend south of I-20 and connect to U.S. 287. The tenacity of people like the late Sen. Chris Harris – who a portion of the roadway is named after – did so much to make this roadway a reality. TxDOT joined with North Central Texas Council of Government’s Regional Transportation Council and the North Texas Tollway Authority to extend 360 to 287. Without this agreement, there is no telling when or even if 360 South would have ever been completed. In addition to the new through lanes, the 360 construction also improved the free frontage roads along the corridor, adding lanes at intersections to reduce congestion. The 360 Tollway offers an important connection to the North Texas region, gives Mansfield residents improved mobility and provides a tremendous opportunity for economic growth for the community. Great days ahead for Mansfield!

Summer is upon us! Kids are home. The Grand Prairie Library System has great activities through August to keep all ages connected. Take advantage of the early literacy programs to prepare children for kindergarten and stay on par in elementary school. For teens, spark a love of reading through hands-on STEAM programs, where kids create art, technology and games. Spanish speakers can attend Spanish GED and ESL classes, with childcare provided. Adults will enjoy computer classes, American Sign Language classes, Pinterest Club, Crazy Couponing and Zumba. Program and print something on the 3D printer. Create a video or use Photoshop on the Creation Station. Go online via www/gptx.org/library and select from thousand of e-books, audio books, movies, TV shows, and online resources. Nothing changes without education. And libraries provide free and equal access to connections, discovery and education for all regardless of age, means or background. Check yours out today!

What are you doing for dinner Friday night? Well, if you’re going to be in downtown Arlington between the hours of 5:00 and 10:00 p.m., you could do a lot worse than grabbing a bite to eat from any one of the innovative food trucks serving up the goodies for the Food Truck Dinners series sponsored by the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department. Following up from the popular Food Truck Fridays lunch series in May, dinner will be served each Friday night from May 25th through June 15th. The food truck line-ups will be announced the Wednesday before each event at NaturallyFun.org/FoodTruck. Bring your lawn chair or blanket and meet us under the stars. Or stroll downtown as you eat. And don’t miss dessert from Steel City Pops or Rockin Rooster. Here’s another fun summer outing idea. Come discover the glamour, luxury, and artistry of cinematic couture at the Arlington Museum of Art’s upcoming exhibition, Cut! Costume and the Cinema. The exhibit will include movie sets with 43 costumes from 27 period films, covering five centuries of history. Some highlights include Johnny Depp’s costume from Pirates of the Caribbean, pieces from the costume Academy Award winner, The Duchess, and Emmy Rossum’s gown from The Phantom of the Opera. The show is open between May 19 and August 12. And I hope to see all of you at the 2018 Tiny Tots Triathlon Saturday, June 16 starting at 9:00 a.m. at River Legacy Parks. at Orsak was a fan of The LOT Downtown, long before she came onboard as Executive Director. “I couldn’t have been more excited to have this dynamic outdoor entertainment venue so close to home,” she said. “Grab a cooler and a blanket, enjoy free concerts, and meet new people or visit with your neighbors under the stars. What’s not to love about that.” Now at the helm of this public/private partnership, she has a front-row seat to all the fun. “It’s exciting to be a part of bringing people together, at a time when things can seem so divided,” Kat said. “Our main goal is to give back to the community. So far, we’ve hosted family movie nights with upwards of 1,000 people in attendance. (We can comfortably accommodate 2,000.) Concerts have been a blast with food trucks, a t-shirt gun, and more. And

Identifying those impacting their current peers positively as perceived by those around them, thousands of deserving Christian athletes are nominated each year and a six month endeavor begins as it culminates with an awesome night where the top male and female semifinalists are highlighted and the winners announced. The male recipient of Christian Athlete of the Year was awarded to Byron Hanspard Jr. Byron is a student at DeSoto ISD where he ranks in the top 20% of his graduating class. He has qualified for the National Honor Society, has received numerous honor roll awards, community service hours and is involved in many student leadership activities. He was named to the Under Armor All-American High School Football Team and a Finalist for the Tom Landry Award. Byron has committed to Baylor University in the fall. Family is an integral part of Byron’s life, he credits his

mom and dad for instilling in him “that with God all things are possible” and he gives Him all the glory for everything he accomplishes on and off the field. Byron has proven himself as a model student and athlete. He possesses a natural leadership ability with an inner confidence of character. Byron is a young man who has a bright future and I am certain that he will exceed the highest standards as the recipient of this prestigious award! The female recipient of Christian Athlete of the Year was awarded to Madison (Maddie) Goldberg. Maddie is a student at Austin Hyde Park High School in Austin , TX where she is a member of the golf team and she has signed to play golf on scholarship for Texas Tech University in the fall. “Not only has Maddie displayed strong character in our school life, she has demonstrated a life of mercy and kindness to the underserved in our communities at home and abroad.Maddie is an respectful Christian young lady who is exceptional in every area of her life on and off the course. She is a sustaining voice who is committed to something bigger than herself changing perspectives and redefining abilities. bject poverty. Two adults and three small children live in squalor in a one room hut in Kenya; days without food and nights filled with unimaginable terror. The drunkard, demon-possessed father returns nightly, bringing nefarious accusations and physical abuse that takes the mother closer and closer to death. Six year old Charles Mulli wishes he could protect her, but the monster is too big, too angry, too out of control. Day after day, night after night, and then no more. Mulli awakes one morning in an empty hut to which his parents and little brothers never return. Left to die, young Mulli learned to scavenge for food, to beg, and go hungry, living a meager existence focused only on survival. In his teenage years, a friend invites him to a crusade where he hears the gospel. Mulli accepts Christ, but continues to struggle at making a life for himself. After years of hardship, by God’s grace and Mulli’s determination, he becomes a successful businessman.

Mulli began his road to success as a hired hand in a wealthy family’s home. Like Joseph, he applied himself and excelled at every task. He was given greater responsibility and eventually became the overseer of the entire household. By prudent money management he saved enough to buy a taxi cab. One led to an entire fleet of cabs and soon Mulli had the largest operation in the city. One venture led to another and he became the wealthiest man in Kenya. Mulli married and started a family. They lived like royalty enjoying the privileges of wealth and status. But Mulli couldn’t shake the memories of his past—the abuse, the poverty, the hopelessness he felt on the streets as an abandoned child. And every day, he looked into the faces of children who had come from similar situations. How could he continue to build businesses and accrue wealth while so many languished in his view?

Mulli’s property was unlike any in the nation, and kings and business moguls began to seek his advice on how to build self-sustaining environments that nurture communities and beyond. Mulli and his family lived and worked the vast land, providing food, shelter, clothing and schooling for the street children of Kenya.

Much to their dismay, Mulli announced to his family his decision to sell his businesses and dedicate his life to helping the street children of Kenya. His wife and children would no longer live in luxury and the ease and convenience they were accustomed to would be no more. His family protested and then went to bed in silence, never vocalizing their support. Mulli prayed, “I am not a special man. This is the hardest decision of my life, yet I am not worried. We’ll start making a plan tomorrow for how to help the street children. The ones who have been thrown away. You will rescue them. I pray for my family. They are my responsibility and you know their hearts.” The next morning Mulli headed to the streets. He took the children food and clothing and began a daily relationship with them. He bought land and started a mission, teaching the children how to grow and cultivate a garden. This small project was the beginning of a land transforming, atmosphere changing, life producing, nation-altering adventure which literally

Over the past three decades, over 13,000 children have been helped. The majority of the graduates of the Mully Children’s Family go on to live productive, successful lives, and most stay true to their faith in Jesus Christ. I had the great gift of attending a small dinner where Charles Mulli was the honored guest. His story and testimony are too phenomenal for a short article. I encourage you to purchase his book, Father to the Fatherless, and watch the movie Mulli. It is one of the most inspiring stories I’ve ever heard, full of God’s mercy, power, faithfulness, and miraculous provision. God is looking for just one. Just one surrendered man or woman who will look beyond the self into the eyes of eternity. When God is in a vision, the impossible becomes possible. Time is accelerated and resources abundant. PATRIOTIC PARTY PERFECTION Celebrate independence with three simple tips Planning a get-together this summer? Whether it’s your first foray into hosting or you’re already a party pro, you’ll need to remember these essentials.

1. MEET Making guests feel comfortable starts with a friendly and early invitation. Do it by mail, phone, evite, or instant message depending on how you typically communicate with the invitee. Send out a reminder and get a tentative headcount so you can plan appropriately. On the day of your gathering, be sure to give each guest a warm welcome with a hug, smile, or other nice greeting. Show them where to find beverages, food, the restroom, and any activities.

TO RISE How waking up early can boost your mood, health, and life BY DAVID BUICE

You’re probably aware of the famous words of wisdom (written by Benjamin Franklin back in 1735 for Poor Richard’s Almanac) about the benefits of retiring early and arising early the next morning. As it turns out, modern science confirms Franklin’s wisdom, pointing out numerous benefits of being an early riser.

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY AND BETTER GRADES While the rest of the world is sleeping, you’re up and getting things accomplished. Without distractions, you can concentrate and get work done much more quickly. Further, research at the University of Texas found that students who consistently get up earlier have better test scores and higher GPAs.

TIME TO EXERCISE Getting up early reduces the chances of missing a workout. You can work out later in the day, but if you do it in

the morning, you’re not going to allow a tiring work day or social plans after work to get in the way of your exercise regimen.

QUIET TIME For early risers, there’re no yelling kids or other noises. Just you, your thoughts, and time to organize your day.

TIME FOR A GOOD BREAKFAST Getting up early gives you time for a healthy, nutritious breakfast that will provide the energy you need to carry you through the morning.

BETTER HEALTH During sleep your body produces proteins known as cytokines that help fight infections and inflammation. Lack of sleep seems to reduce the body’s production of these proteins, making you more susceptible to germs and viruses.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE SWITCH If you’re a night owl by nature, here are a few tips to help you become a morning person. Baby steps. Start by waking up 15 minutes earlier than normal for a week, then 20 minutes the next, and continue this incremental process until you reach your goal. Avoid bright lights. Your TV, cell phone, computer, and tablet all produce light that stimulates the brain. Read a book at bedtime instead. Avoid alcohol and eating before bed. Both inhibit the quality of sleep. Set the mood. The ideal sleeping condition is total darkness and a room temperature between 60 and 67 degrees. So, turn off the cell, lower the thermostat, and get ready to greet the dawn!

Any of Kristin Bradford’s “full-time” jobs would be enough to keep her hopping. As a full-time clinical liaison for Kindred Transitional Care Hospital, Kristin works with patients at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center to determine whether Kindred can provide the specialized care they need, once their acute care needs have been met. AESTHETIC CONSULTANT Certified for eight years in both administering Botox and fillers, Kristin began offering injections to an intimate circle of clients. Irene Johnson was a YMCA kid. “In a lot of ways, the Y was the only thing we had in our small west Texas town,” she said. “As I grew and considered a career, I think I always had the Y in my heart. But I initially had other plans. I wanted to be a lawyer and serve in the fight for justice.” But Irene found her way back to the Y again in college. “I was a single parent looking for a way to support my family,” she said. “I was instantly energized by the non-profit work in this cause-driven organization.” That was 24 years ago. Since that time, Irene has served in the Y movement in many capacities. “I’ve served in leadership capacities from day camp counselor, lifeguard, childcare director, associate director, executive director, executive vice president, interim CEO, and senior executive director,” she said. “Everything I thought I wanted to do as an attorney has been actualized in serving communities through the Y. I’m passionate about human services work and my career has allowed me to positively impact families in a number of ways.” Today, Irene puts her bachelor of science in human services to work as senior executive director of Arlington-Mansfield Area YMCA even as she works towards a master’s in organizational leadership and management. “I have a true passion for developing others to drive

Father Days The 364 other ones in the year BY BRANDON DAIKER

The first time I remember being aware that my father was not some sort of mythic, almighty creature—that he actually had a mortal human age like the rest of us—he was 34 years old. I know it’s true because at the time I was writing and illustrating a series of uninspired comic books with storylines cribbed from the pages of Superman and my hero, a talking cat, needed an age. So I made him my dad’s age. He was about four times as old as I was, a level of permanence I could barely fathom. Old enough to be a father, old enough to be a hero. It’s due either to life’s clever way of delivering on-thenose moments or my all-too-ready willingness to look into patterns that as a first time father I am also now 34 years old, and the experiences I have daily enter my mind regularly as scenarios in which I imagine my own dad. I wonder if he had the same doubts and insecurities, if he selfishly lamented the truncation of his free time (and freedom). I will admit that I feel nothing much like either a father or a hero some days as my infant daughter wails relentlessly while I cycle through options like troubleshooting a piece of electronics, unplug it and plug it back in again, check it with a different cable, is the diaper dirty, does she want to be held while I’m sitting, would she rather I be standing, is it tummy time, is tummy time over, have you tried removing the wireless network and re-adding it, are you hungry, what do you want from me, what am I doing. I think of him trying to figure out whether he needed to be swaying back and forth while he held me, or if I was too hot or too cold, or just tired, and in the brief moments of despair when I feel like I’m screwing it all up I try to remind myself that he never considered himself a hero—I did. Not because he kept me from crying, or stopped me from falling down, but because he was there for me when those things happened, to do whatever he could, such as it was. As she pouts red-faced through tiny little baby tears, I tell myself I might not always know how to help her but I’ll sure be here to try—and hope that just as it’s been for me in the case of my own hero, it’ll be enough.

What it means when morning breath works overtime BY AUDREY ASHE

Morning breath is a major bummer, but for some of us this dreaded oral funk sticks around most of the day. Halitosis is the clinical word for bad breath, and thankfully most cases come down to oral hygiene problems that can be easily corrected. If left untreated, however, it can lead to more serious oral health issues like cavities or gum disease. Poor brushing and flossing leave food particles in the mouth which are broken down by localized bacteria, producing sulfur compounds that give off an unsavory odor. What you eat plays a part as well. Onion and garlic are among the top contributors. Coffee, alcohol, and diets heavy in meat and dairy may also contribute to bacteria breeding conditions. Make an appointment with your dentist for an evaluation and oral cleaning with precision instruments to eliminate the worst of the odor-producing bacterial build-up. You’d think antibacterial mouthwash would eliminate bad breath, but it often only serves to mask most of the odor. In fact, mouthwash overuse can kill good bacteria and turn the oral ecosystem out of whack as it repopulates. Just keep in mind that mouthwash isn’t a substitute for proper oral care! In some cases, halitosis can be an indicator of a more serious health

problem. Diabetes can cause oddly sweet smelling breath along with other symptoms like unexplained weight loss and increased thirst. Chronically bad breath may also be an indicator of kidney or liver complications, or an early indicator of lung and throat cancer. If you experience recurring halitosis even after a change in diet and oral care, make an appointment with your doctor to test for any medical issues. NATURAL SWEET CINNAMON MOUTH RINSE This DIY mouthwash isn’t just for a spicy kick! Dental scientists have shown that an essential oil from cinnamon can kill oral bacteria, including germs responsible for bad breath. Cinnamon is an antiseptic and contains polyphenols, an antioxidant that combats inflammation and cell damage. Here is a simple, chemical and alcohol free recipe for a morning mouth refresher between dental visits. ½ tablespoon cinnamon ½ lemon 1 teaspoon raw honey 1 cup warm water Combine ingredients and stir until blended, pour into capped bottle. Use as a mouthwash in the morning before brushing.

Sunsets are spectacular—bold, blazing, and showy—but the sunrise, enveloping us in the promise of a new day, evokes hope and wonder. It’s a magical time as predawn fades, when everything that was in the shadows becomes luminous in a thin, gentle veil of light, and the night dew glistens in the serenity of the moment. Traveling the globe, I try to witness at least one sunrise in the locale where I’m staying (admittedly, jet lag has something to do with this), whether it’s perched on a mountain top or on a hotel veranda watching the sun cast new light on an awakening city. TAJ MAHAL, AGRA, INDIA This destination focuses on one of the new seven wonders of the world. If sunrise at the Taj Mahal isn’t on your bucket list, it should be. Set along the south bank of the Yamuna river in Agra, the striking beauty of the Taj Mahal early in the morning is marvelous. At sunrise, the Taj begins to glow in soft grays and pinks, then gradually transitions into a reddish, glowing color. At noon, the monument appears ivory-white, its true color.

More than 5,000 miles away from Hawaii, another U.S. National Park near Bar Harbor, Maine, lays claim to breathtaking sunrises. Overlooking the wild and rocky Maine coast dotted with tiny islands, Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Mountain heralds in daybreak for thousands of visitors each year. Plan to arrive at the summit about a halfhour early to allow an appreciation of the colors of the predawn sky.

One of the great sunrise destinations in the U.S. is Haleakalá National Park on Maui, Hawaii. Aptly, Haleakalá is a Hawaiian name that means “house of the sun.” Travelers from around the world make an early morning pilgrimage to the summit to watch the sun rise above the clouds at more than 10,000 feet above sea level. You can schedule a sunrise tour or drive up the mountain to the summit parking lot yourself. Visitors in personal or rental vehicles need to make sunrise viewing reservations ahead of time online at Recreation.gov.

SHETLAND ISLES, SCOTLAND Fancy a quiet trip away from the hordes to a uniquely Scottish setting? The Shetland Islands—a subarctic archipelago of Scotland that lies northeast of Great Britain—offer the solitude of remote beaches along with a pristine clarity of light reflected off the water. 3. TAKE IT SLOW. A little wiggle room is important when traveling with kids. Whether at the airport, sightseeing, or getting from point A to point B, trying to make kids hurry isn’t fun for anyone. Whenever possible, give them room to explore and discover at their own pace.

4. OFFER THEM THE CAMERA. Encourage even young kids to observe their surroundings and what interests them. Let them record their knee-high viewpoint. You might be surprised what they capture.

5. PRELOAD KID-FRIENDLY APPS. As much as we all hate to see a small child parked in front of their parent’s cell phone, traveling is a good time to allow some well-chosen apps to step in as nanny. Take along a book and washable markers for young kids. But don’t feel guilty about also proffering a device that’s loaded with calming, distracting apps and games.

6. KEEP THINGS SANITARY. Keep antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer close by. Wipe down cutlery in questionable restaurants. Distribute hand sanitizer when there are no washing facilities. You can even cover airplane seats with crib sheets to protect from germs left by previous passengers.

7. KEEP DISTRACTIONS COMING. Have a collection of toys to be handed out periodically, as kids grow tired of what they have. Handheld puzzles, coloring books, stickers, and word searches can help pass the time on a long flight or car journey and keep everybody sane.

8. PLAN HEALTHY SNACKS. Nothing makes a car trip or plane ride feel longer than a bunch of kids hyped up on sugary snacks. Instead pack savory choices such as cheese cubes, breadsticks, fruit, and bagels.

9. ENCOURAGE KIDS TO KEEP A TRAVEL JOURNAL. It might be a photo journal, a scrapbook of postcards, or a hand-written description of each location and adventure. This is a great way to get kids to try new experiences and new foods, knowing they can write about them afterward.

10. MARK THEM. It might sound crazy but, if you’re travelling through crowded airports or transport hubs, write your cell number on your child’s arm, so authorities can contact you, should the two of you become separated.

With a little forethought and know-how, traveling with kids of any age can be enjoyable. And just think of the memories you’ll be making.
