about the seasons changing that helps me see God everywhere: in His world, in His people, and especially in His word. The Bible encourages us to dig deep into God’s word. When we do, we’re seldom disappointed.

Our time on this earth is so brief. (James 4:14 says our life is but a vapor or a mist.) And we have been called to be the light of the world.

Sure, we all go through dry seasons. But then there are times, like I’m experiencing right now, when we are hungry for the things of God. The psalmist put it so beautifully in Psalm 42:1 when he wrote, “As a deer pants for flowing streams, so my soul pants for you, O God.” What a lovely thought. I’m being blessed with a season where I feel God’s presence so close and I see Him at work in so many ways that I want to encourage others to take the time to find Him. Deuteronomy 4:29 promises we will find Him, when we seek Him with our whole heart.

There are a lot of great things about fall, the least of which is the changing colors and the cooler temperatures.

But there’s something about this season that connects with the sense of community we all feel about our hometowns.

Maybe it’s all the festivals held this time of year, the kind of events that connect neighbors and bring out the child in all of us.

Whether it’s National Night Out or Fire Safety Palooza, school carnivals or trick-or-treating at Rose Park in the dark, Mansfield residents see fall as a time for celebrating our great community. It’s a wonderful feeling to see the happy faces and hear the laughter at these community events; you get a true sense of the excellent quality of life we are blessed to have in Mansfield.

The city website calendar is full of activities and events this fall hosted by many city departments. Our goal is not just to keep our residents educated and informed, but engaged with their city and with each other.

Grand Prairie was recently ranked the 2nd Happiest City in Texas and 10th Happiest City in the U.S. by WalletHub.com. The philanthropic spirit is alive and well in The American Dream City. That was clear last month during North Texas Giving Day, when the Arlington Tomorrow Foundation awarded $50,000 in grants to nonprofit organizations and hosted a free community concert featuring blues rock guitarist and singer Jimmie Vaughan. During the annual 18-hour online giving event, Arlington residents gave generously to the nonprofit of their choice with all funds matched by the Communities Foundation. It was touching to see so many give so unselfishly.

Then, the American Dream City got a little dreamier, with the groundbreaking of the AISD’s new Fine Arts Center and Athletics Complex. The Fine Arts Center will serve the entire district, prekindergarten through 12th grade, will include a 1,250-seat concert hall, 450-seat theater, art and dance studios, classroom space, instrument repair center, and gallery space. The Athletics Complex will include a natatorium and competition venues for basketball, volleyball and wrestling. We think it’ll be a big boon to our area.

And I was happy to see many of you at the inaugural Downtown Arlington Brewing Arts Festival. Featuring original artwork by local and not-so-local artists, live music, and interactive art activities for kids and adults, the event left us expecting big things from this fest in the future. Now that the weather is growing milder, I hope to see you at River Legacy Living Science Center, for a family nature walk. Educational guided walks begin at 2:00 p.m., the second Saturdays of every month.

FRUIT OF THE VINE

DESIRE OR DUTY?

A FEW MONTHS AGO I ATTENDED A WORSHIP EVENT IN AUSTIN, TEXAS. I HAD GONE TO THE SAME EVENT THE YEAR BEFORE AND WAS IMMERSED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND CHALLENGED TO A CLOSER WALK WITH HIM. THIS YEAR THE FIRST FEW HOURS WERE DIFFERENT. I SAT IN THE AUDIENCE AS AN OBSERVER, HESITANT TO PARTICIPATE AS MY MIND RACED IN A THOUSAND DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. I BEGAN TO EVALUATE MY RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND REALIZED MY HEART HAD GROWN COLD. WHILE I STILL WENT TO CHURCH EVERY WEEK, PRAYED, AND READ DEVOTIONALS AND MY BIBLE, I HAD LITTLE DESIRE FOR GOD. THIS REALIZATION SHOOK ME AS I KNEW IT DID NOT PLEASE THE LORD AND I WANTED MORE—MORE OF HIM, MORE SATISFACTION, MORE JOY, MORE MEANING OUT OF LIFE. AS I TOOK INVENTORY OF MY LIFE THE FACTS WERE CLEAR—I DID ALMOST EVERYTHING FROM A SENSE OF DUTY. MY MARRIAGE, MY CHILDREN, MY CHURCH ATTENDANCE—I DID WHAT I THOUGHT WAS REQUIRED OF ME AND LITTLE MORE.

As I sat surrounded by anointed musicians and passionate worshippers, I asked God to forgive me. With an earnest plea, I asked Him to awaken desire in me for Him, for my family, for ministry, for His people, for His ways.

I searched for books with the words “Duty vs. Desire” and wouldn’t you know it—a classic written in the ‘80s came up in my search—Desiring God

by John Piper. The title sounded familiar, I knew the author, and after reading the sample chapter, I knew it was a book I needed in the moment.

After the first worship set, Todd White took the stage. As he began to share His great love for the Father, I wept. His passion and conviction were contagious. He was and has been on fire for God since his salvation 14 years ago. He doesn’t stay that way through passive living, however. Todd White pursues God passionately from a desire that has been stoked day after day, year after year. Desire for God doesn’t come from feeding the flesh. It doesn’t come from living as close to the world as possible. It comes through an intentional determination to ignore the wants of the flesh and the cries of the soul, and a laser-like focus on the things of the spirit.

We’ve been rocked to sleep by the serenade of hyper-grace, unaware that grace is the power given to us to live Christ-like, not a catch-all excuse to avoid holiness. While salvation is instant, sanctification is a process, one that continues throughout our lives until we are transformed into the image of Christ. The Word is clear that Christ will one day return for His bride, the

church—a bride without spot or wrinkle—not a bride that looks for every opportunity to get by, to cuss a little, to walk so close to the world it’s hard to tell the difference, but a bride dressed in white, saved by grace through faith, sanctified, holy (set apart for a special purpose), through the daily encounters with God and His Word.

Much of the world can quote John 3:16, but do we know John 3:36? It says, “He who believes in (has faith in, clings to, relies on) the Son has eternal life.

But whoever disobeys (is unbelieving toward, refuses to trust in, disregards, is not subject to) the Son will never see (experience) life, but the wrath of God abides on him [God’s displeasure remains on him; His indignation hangs over him continually]” (AMPC). Pause, and calmly think about that verse. If we don’t obey Christ, if we don’t submit to Him, the wrath of God comes upon us.

I challenge us today to submit to God daily by carving out time in our busy schedules to meet Him in the secret place. We cannot be transformed into His image without time spent with Him. We cannot develop desire for Him all on our own. Piper says it this way, “Not to enjoy God is to dishonor Him. To say to Him that something else satisfies you more is the opposite of worship. It is sacrilege.”

STACY Stacy Rountree didn’t give it much thought when her doctor wanted to follow up her routine mammogram with an ultrasound. “I had fibroids starting in my thirties, so I was always diligent about annual mammograms,” she said. “When they called me to come in and see something on the ultrasound, I didn’t even think to mention it to my 7th and 11th grade daughters.”

But the “something” turned out to be three small masses. “They just looked like dots,” Stacy said. “We followed with a biopsy and they came back showing cancer.” The good news is that Stacy’s diligence meant her cancer was caught at the earliest possible stage. The oncologist gave Stacy options, but she knew what she wanted to do.

“I was going to watch my daughters grow up,” she said. “I was going to watch them go to college. I was going to watch them get married.”

She scheduled a double mastectomy. “I already had bladder surgery scheduled and I told my doctor I wanted to do everything back-to-back,” Stacy said. “He thought I was crazy, but I had my bladder surgery, moved to the next O.R., had my mastectomy, moved to the next O.R., and had my reconstruction, all in 15 hours.”

“With every person who came in my path, I could see the fingerprints of God,” Stacy said.

“He was with me every step of the way. The doctors told me I’d be back at work in six weeks, but I was back in two. We’d caught it so early that I didn’t even have to do chemotherapy.”

“God has given me so many chances to share my story,” Stacy said. “I received so much love from my friends, my church, the school system, the PTA. My husband, Bruce, loved me through it. My sister-in-law and dearest friend was amazing! If I could scream from the mountaintop, I’d tell other women to have a baseline done when you’re 30, then another when you’re 40. That’s how they caught mine so early, because they could see the differences. That’s why I was able to skip chemo and radiation.”

“As long as I’m alive, my girls and other people I love will be diligent about their screenings,” Stacy said. “We love life! We know God took me through this and now I can walk with other women and their families through it.” Stacy is loving life more than ever now. Not only has she watched both of her girls grow up and marry wonderful men, but she and Bruce are now awaiting the birth of twin grandbabies.

SCREENING IS KEY Regular screening tests are the best way to find cancers early, when treatment is less drastic and more likely to work.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends regular, routine screenings for breast, cervical, and colorectal (colon) cancer, as well as lung cancer if you’re at high risk.

MEGAN Megan Perkins was younger than the average person when she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. “It was a week before my ninth birthday,” she said. “I was feeling badly and being treated with antibiotics when an on-call doctor noticed bruises on my legs. I was a tomboy, so my parents hadn’t thought anything of it. The doctor felt that my spleen was enlarged and did a blood test.

He told my parents to go home and pack a bag. We were going to the hospital.” Once there, tests confirmed cancer.

Megan was one of the lucky ones. “I was so young that I didn’t really know what cancer was,” she said. “I knew I was sick, but the doctors were taking care of me. So, I just figured I’d be fine. They told my parents to keep my childhood as normal as possible and that’s what they did.” And fine she was. In remission within two weeks, she learned later that she’d just dodged receiving head radiation for her condition—a practice that they had just discontinued for her condition that led to some unfortunate side effects for many later in life.

But the diagnosis changed Stacy. “I’d been a very angsty kid,” she said. “Seeing the compassion extended to me by my peers made me a much nicer person. I think I handled my teen years and young adult years differently, because this experience helped put life in perspective for me. It made me take many things in life far less seriously.

Megan is 45 now, and has two kids of her own. “I had healthy pregnancies and healthy babies,” she said. “I participate in a lifelong study on adults who survived childhood cancer. I undergo bone marrow and spinal taps every three years. There’s been no sign of cancer since then.”

• Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early. Starting at age 45, women should have a mammogram every year. Check the complete guidelines at Cancer.org.

• The pap test can find abnormal cells in the cervix which may turn into cancer.

The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes. Pap tests also can find cervical cancer early, when the chance of being cured is very high.

• Colorectal cancer almost always develops from precancerous polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon or rectum. Screening tests can find precancerous polyps, so they can be removed before they turn into cancer.

• The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) for people who have a history of heavy smoking and smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years and are between 55 and 80 years old.

TIMES HAVE CHANGED Advancements in cancer treatment over the past 20 years are resoundingly encouraging. Improvements in chemotherapy and the development of targeted radiation greatly reduce the risk of damage to surrounding tissue. Cancer surgeries are far less invasive. Improved supportive therapies like antibiotics treat infections better, and blood growth factors speed recovery after chemotherapy.

But routine and regular screening is still the key to catching cancers when they’re most treatable.

LESSEN YOUR CHANCE The American Cancer Society offers these simple steps to lessen your chance of developing cancer.

SCOTT Scott Daniels, Sr. was attending an out-of-town trade show when several people inquired about a swelling on the side of his face. “I hadn’t noticed anything when I shaved that morning, and my wife hadn’t mentioned anything,” he said. “But I scheduled an appointment to look into it when I got home.”

His doctor diagnosed a tumor, scheduled surgery, and removed it. “Everything went fine, and I thought that was that,” Scott said. “Then I got a call from the doctor’s office telling me to come in and bring my wife,” he said. “A biopsy of the tumor came back showing Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I felt like someone punched me in the stomach. Right away, I asked him how long I had to live.”

But Scott says God blessed him with a good wife. “I knew Fran and I were in this together,” he said. “They set me up with 36 radiation treatment—and I won’t say they weren’t barbaric.” But that was 28 years ago, and Scott has been cancer-free since. “There were some side effects of the radiation,” he said. “During treatment, one side of my face looked perpetually sunburned. It stopped saliva production on that side of my face, my teeth totally went south, and I didn’t have to shave that side for 15 or 20 years.”

But Fran and Scott live a full, active life now, a life which includes golf, fishing, cruising, woodworking, crafting, and outreach ministries through their church.

“When you hear the ‘c word,’ it’s easy to think it’s a death sentence,” Scott said. “But treatment has come a long way. I have no restrictions now and life is great.”

If you are a mom whose body has been ransacked by pregnancy and you’re ready for a change, a mommy makeover could be just what the doctor ordered. To be a good candidate, ideally it will have been six months to a year since you had your last baby and you aren’t planning on having more.

WHAT DOES A MOMMY MAKEOVER DO? A mommy makeover typically rejuvenates a woman’s abdomen and breasts. The three most common procedures performed during a mommy makeover include a tummy tuck, breast surgery, and excess fat removal. Here is a breakdown:

tummy tuck Pregnancy can sometimes cause the abdominal muscles to pull too far apart, resulting in diastasis recti, which leaves a protruding belly that puts extra strain on the back. An abdominoplasty (a.k.a. tummy tuck) can help correct this by sewing the abdominal muscles together much like a corset. Skin that has lost its

a hectic, tumultuous world, finding a place on earth that instills wonderment, if only for a few moments, makes an impression that lasts a lifetime.

Spirit-renewing experiences are deeply personal and often happen serendipitously as you explore new destinations. A singularly still moment while touring San Antonio’s Spanish missions, witnessing a double rainbow emerge from stormy skies over Matthias Church in Budapest—you never know when and where it will happen. Although spirit-awakening experiences can’t be forced, there are destinations that serve as a backdrop for them. This month I’ve recalled a few that have uplifted my spirit in surprising ways. Where will your spiritrenewing experiences take place?

Bear Butte SOUTH DAKOTA

Just under 60 miles north of Mount Rushmore, Bear Butte rises from the prairie where bison roam. This small mountain of volcanic rock which has eroded away over millions of years remains a sacred site for Plains Indian tribes, such as the Cheyenne and the Lakota (Sioux).

Viewing Bear Butte from the road wasn’t necessarily as inspirational for me as some say it can be, but hiking the trail to the top offered a whole different perspective. Nearly every tree and bush is draped with lovingly crafted prayer cloths and tobacco ties—offerings left by indigenous people who have journeyed to this spiritual location. If you’re lucky, the sounds of ceremonial drums mingle with the rustlings of a breeze, and regardless of your religion, invite you to become immersed in the heartbeat of the mountain and the Native Americans who hold it sacred.

Wat Po

BANGKOK, THAIL AND Visiting Bangkok without touring a Wat (Buddhist temple complex) is like going to Paris without experiencing Notre Dame. Although it’s home to the famous reclining Buddha, I expected Wat Po, like the other wats I had toured, to be fascinating but not spirit-stirring. Yet upon entering the building where the Buddha lies sideways, head resting on his hand, I felt a sense of serenity pour over me. Perhaps it was the enormity of the shiny gold-leafed Buddha at 151 feet long and 50 feet tall, with his feet exquisitely decorated and inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

Or it may have been the saffron-robed Buddhist monks whose mere presence in the temple exudes an air of peacefulness. Or possibly it was just me, experiencing a spiritual place where time stands still.

Newgrange IREL AND

At first glance it doesn’t look like much—a large, roundish, earthen-topped mound retained at its base by large keystones. Older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza, Newgrange holds a secret inside. A 62-foot-long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with three alcoves aligned with the rising sun at the winter solstice.

It doesn’t take long before your imagination runs wild at this Stone Age (Neolithic) passage tomb. Building the passage graves was a mammoth undertaking. Who were these people who designed and then constructed Newgrange with tools made from stone, wood, and antler? What was the solstice event like? Was there really a pyramidal-shaped stone at the center of the chamber which has disappeared? Newgrange is a place where you lose yourself in ideas about the past, about how humans have evolved, and about where we are today and where our journey will take us.

Chartres Cathedral CHARTRES, FR ANCE

Having visited numerous gothic cathedrals before, the Cathedral Notre Dame at Chartres (located roughly an hour from Paris) took me by surprise.

Perched on a hilltop, it is one of the world’s bestpreserved medieval cathedrals. Whether you are Christian, practice another faith, or are a spiritual seeker who connects with the site’s Druidic roots, the cathedral can leave you awestruck by the devotion of the faithful who built it and who have made pilgrimages to it over the centuries.

One of Chartres cathedral’s most interesting elements is literally right under your feet. Many believe the beautifully preserved limestone circuit labyrinth set into the floor represents the long and tortuous path pilgrims would have followed to reach the cathedral in medieval times. Today, it is a symbolic path to peace and tranquility. Walking it in the cathedral, I felt the labyrinth was a metaphor for life’s journey and became filled with quiet joy when I reached its center.

he seasons are changing and a cold breeze will be heading our way in no time. Cozy up to a weekend bowl of creamy pumpkin soup, or heat things for sports with spicy chicken tortilla soup.

You can even pair them with a slice of homemade no-rise bacon and sage bread. All recipes serve from 6 to 8 people.

TIPS & TRICKS Both of these soups can be kept warm over low heat on the stove throughout the day! It’s perfect for serving during the big game or for whatever gatherings you have planned this month.

PUMPKIN SOUP DIRECTIONS

In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.

Once the butter is just beginning to brown, add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Then add the garlic, sugar, cinnamon, pepper, and cayenne pepper, and cook for 3 minutes.

Stir in pumpkin puree and broth, mixing well. Season with salt to taste and bring the soup to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes.

Stir in the cream and sage.

Season to taste with salt.

Let the soup cool for 10 minutes. Transfer the soup to a blender (or use an immersion blender in the pot) and puree until smooth.

Simmer on low heat and serve warm with a drizzle of heavy cream and a sprinkle of fresh parsley.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425°F. Grease a baking sheet with a light coat of cooking spray or butter, and set aside.

Sift together flour, baking powder and 1 teaspoon of salt into a large bowl. Stir in water, garlic powder, and onion powder. Knead in the bowl for a couple of minutes. The dough will be a little sticky.

Turn out the dough on a greased baking pan and press it out until it’s

approximately 1 or 2 inches thick. Coat the dough with olive oil, then press the sage and cooked bacon into the top of the bread. Bake for 25 minutes, until golden brown, then cut and serve.

TIPS & TRICKS You can customize the bread in several ways by changing up the toppings to match the soup you are making. Having tomato soup? Try adding some dried basil and chopped sun-dried tomatoes on top!

for an additional 5 minutes.

Stir in chicken stock, tomato paste, chicken, and spices. Bring the soup to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer.

Simmer the soup for approximately 30 minutes. Serve warm with garnishes.

Consider how life would look, if you could quit? How would your life—and the lives of the people you love— be different without this albatross around your neck?

Do some research on just how bad this habit can be or how bad it could become.

Look for replacement activity. If you want to quit smoking, try eating sunflower seeds or chomping on carrot and celery sticks. If you’re trying to stop biting your nails, try chewing gum. If you’re overeating out of boredom, take up a new hobby or craft.

Fine yourself for offenses, either with money (which you can donate to a charity) or an unwelcome chore (litterbox, ugh!).

Remove temptation. Don’t keep junk food in the house.

Avoid the smoking areas at work. Cut up all but one credit card and pay it off monthly.

10. Tell someone what you’re trying to quit and ask them to hold you accountable. If you can find someone who’s successfully relinquished the habit themselves, all the better. Be honest and let that person know how you’re progressing (or not).

Be patient with yourself, take things one day at a time, and celebrate even baby steps. You didn’t develop your bad habit overnight. So, give yourself time to CUT IT OUT!
