ver evolving to meet the needs of patients, Medical City Arlington earned its fifth consecutive All Star award this year as our voters’ preferred hospital.    Under the leadership of CEO Keith Zimmerman, Medical City Arlington continues to improve the way it serves the community. To wit, the revolutionary $60 million Women’s Hospital that is set to open in April 2019. Once complete, the facility will include more than 125,000 square feet of new and renovated space. It will have 55 additional beds, 23 modern labor and delivery rooms, three modern C-section operating rooms, three women’s VIP suites, 14 antepartum rooms, 53 postpartum and gynecology rooms, 35 Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit beds and 35 nursery beds. Other recent highlights include:    • The hospital is currently in pursuit of Level 2 Trauma accreditation, the highest ranking among area health facilities.    • Medical City Arlington is the first hospital in the city to use the new SCOUT® wire-free radar localization system that can precisely locate and direct the removal of a tumor to ± 1 mm of accuracy during a lumpectomy or surgical biopsy procedure.    • Medical City Arlington is now offering the world’s smallest pacemaker, the Micra®, for cardiology patients.    • Earlier this year, the hospital received the 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for information about physicians and hospitals.    “In 1976, when the hospital started, it was primarily a small community hospital,” Zimmerman says. “Fast forward to today, and we’re a large, tertiary care hospital with 24/7 critical care intensivist staffing, allowing us to provide a higher level of care than ever before. I like to say that we have all the services nobody wants. But they are very glad we have them when they need them.” HONORABLE MENTION (TIE): USMD Hospital at Arlington 801 W. or the fifth straight year, Dr. Joan Bergstrom, founder of Women’s Health Services, has been tabbed by our readers as the All Star winner in the Ob/Gyn category.    “It is such an honor to be recognized by my patients as Best Ob/Gyn in Arlington,” Dr. Bergstrom says. “I have had the privilege of being a part of my patients’ lives over the last 32 years. During this time, I delivered more than 4,000 babies. The ability to develop relationships with patients that last through decades of life is a very special opportunity. Every day I get to go to work and meet new patients and continue relationships with established patients.”    Dr. Bergsrom is quick to note that she shares the honor with her stellar team at Women’s Health Services, including Drs. Joy Carter, Kiran Nangrani, Dawnette K. Peppler, Sheri Puffer and Jessica Brown. “The team of doctors and staff of Women’s Health Services strive to provide excellent patient service with on-line flexible appointment scheduling,” she says. “We give personal attention to all of our patients. Our doctors are all board certified or board eligible, and we offer the highest quality, ethical and efficient obstetrical and gynecological services. Our staff is dedicated to providing outstanding customer service.”    Dr. Bergstrom founded Women’s Health Services in 1986 when she moved to Arlington after completing her residency in Ob/Gyn at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City. For the first 10 years, she was in solo practice. “As time went by,” she says, “I gradually added physicians to improve our ability to serve more patients. The group now has six physicians. All doctors rotate between the offices to ensure expedient access for our patients.”    Women’s Health Services opened a second office in South Arlington in 2016 to offer a more convenient location for patients who live in the south part of the city. “We strive to improve our scheduling process and develop better patient communication by using direct, secure e-mail and text messaging,” Dr. Bergstrom says.    Her patients, meanwhile, say “thanks!” with their All Star votes – again.
