pizza Winner Mama’s Pizza 1200 N. Fielder (817) 795-8700 • mamaspizzas.net MAMA’S PIZZA winning Readers’ Choice All Star awards seems to be a recurring theme – this is the third straight year the eatery has taken top honors in our poll. President Jordan Scott says the restaurant takes pride in what goes into its awardwinning pies. “Mama’s Pizza specializes in an ‘East Coast’ style pizza that is made fresh daily using the best ingredients we can get our hands on,” he says. “Our dough is made daily as needed. We use 100-percent real cheese made from milk, quality meats and fresh produce to top our exceptional pies.” Mama’s pizzas are baked in hot brick ovens, giving them a just-right browned crust that is brushed with melted garlic butter. “Our dedication to quality ingredients and equipment has made Mama’s the pizza of choice in Fort Worth and Tarrant County for decades,” Scott says. “In fact, some call it a Fort Worth institution.” Mama’s now carries chicken wings, a grilled chicken salad and new toppings that will make your mouth water.

6407 S. Cooper St. • (817) 465-3122 • 2150 E. Lamar Blvd., #120 • (817) 795-4555 • riomambo.com RIO MAMBO began serving the South Arlington and surrounding communities in December of 2010. Its concept in South Arlington continues to evolve with recent remodels in both the bar and main dining rooms, yet one constant is the quality of the food that inspires patrons to return for more – and to vote for Rio Mambo as their favorite place for Mexican/Tex-Mex food. “Recipes are important, and while there are a vast number of translations to basic Tex-Mex, ultimately the real secret lies in the ingredients,” says owner Brent Johnson. “Our commitment to quality meats and produce, aged cheese and fresh herbs and spices will provide you with the difference we call ‘Chef Mex.’” Of course, Rio Mambo is more than just great Tex-Mex (or “Chef Mex”) food. The addition of Salsa Nights on Saturday – complete with complimentary dance lessons led by Amanda Brown and the sounds of DJ Jesse Ritmo – and live music has turned this location into an Arlington hot spot. Indeed, Rio Mambo is not just a restaurant, but a dining experience.

Italian
deli
Winner: Cafe Sicilia
Winner: Dino’s Subs
RESTAURATEURS Joe Seyedmorteza and Fernando Nogueira are experienced operators with two very family oriented concepts – Café Sicilia and Pancho’s Mexican Buffet – that include eight restaurants throughout the Metroplex. “Café Sicilia is exactly what we set out to accomplish – a relaxing environment where HOMEMADE Italian dishes are prepared to order, from our hand-tossed pizzas to our favorites like Chicken Rolattini or Seafood Genovese,” says Seyedmorteza. “It’s a place where ‘the noise’ of large restaurant chains is non-existent, where you can bring your favorite wine to enjoy along with a well prepared meal. That’s what it is all about – around the table with friends and family – our goal precisely.” Nogueira agrees, and adds this: “Our employees make us what we are, and by providing them with the right tools and high-quality ingredients we have been able to achieve our goals.”
WHEN JADE DINO, owner of Dino’s Subs, learned her popular eatery had been tabbed by our readers as the best place in the area for a sub sandwich, she exclaimed, “My father is looking down and smiling. He would be so proud.” Jade took over the primary role at the sandwich shop after the passing of her father and Dino’s founder, Larry Dino. And, she says, Daddy taught her well. “He said, ‘never, ever, go down on quality,’” she says. “All our meats are fresh to order; everything is fresh. That’s the way he did it, and that’s the way we still do it.” Jade expressed appreciation to the voters who flooded the ballot box at arlingtontoday.com earlier this summer. “We couldn’t have done it without them,” she says. “I want to thank all the loyal customers who have been there from Day One and all the new customers who have discovered us over the years. This is such a great honor.”

LAST MONTH, J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill celebrated its 37th birthday. This month, the popular restaurant gets to celebrate again after having been named the top sports bar in the area by our readers. J. Gilligans also earned All Star status in the Burger and Happy Hour categories. While it’s a “go to” place for watching sports of all sorts – there’s always a game or several on the TVs scattered about the restaurant – J. Gilligan’s is also party headquarters for reunions, birthdays, charity functions, political events, holiday parties, youth sports Clubs, wedding events, business lunches and meetings, and ... well ... gatherings of any kind. Even if you’re not into traditional sports, the sport of having fun with family and friends is the best reason to gather the group and go to J. Gilligan’s.

Steak Winner Mac’s Bar & Grill 6077 W. I-20 (817) 572-0541 • macsteak.com MAC’S BAR & GRILL owner Mike McMahan tells a story that explains why people love his restaurant so much. “I can sum it up from the comment a customer once made to me,” he says. “The gentleman pulled me aside and said he wanted to thank me for the way our staff takes care of his family and how friendly and caring everyone is. He was especially appreciative of the hostesses always rushing to open the doors for his 95-year-old mother. “We have been around long enough to where we think of our customers as family, and we celebrate with our customers when something exciting happens in their lives, and we share their burden if something tragic happens. I have had many customers tell me they had some of their best family discussions with their kids while dining at Mac’s.” McMahan and his team are passionate about each aspect of Mac’s. That’s why they have been serving Tarrant County since 1987. In an easy atmosphere where the food is excellent and the service is warm, guests find a lively reprieve. Mac’s will accommodate your every need, whether it is a quick lunch, a casual dinner, special occasion or a gathering with old friends. “As a locally owned and operated, oneof-a kind restaurant, Mac’s has also been a true community partner,” McMahan says. “We are dedicated not only to supporting and nurturing our existing relationships, but also continually cultivating new ones within our community.”
AFTER BUYING the Candlelite Inn restaurant in 2012, Alan Petsche spent 18 months remodeling in order to “preserve the many memories of the old building and incorporate them in to the new one.” The restaurant opened in 1957 and became one of Arlington’s most popular eateries. Reopening the Candlelite Inn was personal for Petsche. “I just wanted to become a customer again, and I’m really excited that we were able to honor the history here in both atmosphere and menu,” he says. When asked why Candlelite Inn was given an Honorable Mention for “Arlington’s Best Steak.” Petsche comments, “We start with a really good aged (average of 28 days) cut of meat, season it well, and then cook it to perfection. Our goal is to make sure our food is always good and never boring. As a customer, I feel we consistently hit the mark.”

El Arroyo offers a variety of tasty choices – and one super patio – that have helped it over the past 14 years to become one area’s favorite places to hang out. About that patio ... This newly renovated patio with a full bar is an ideal place to enjoy a refreshing margarita while watching your favorite sports on any of 15 flat screen TVs. 829 E. Lamar Blvd. (817) 265-9174 • piccolomondo.com WINNING A TOP SPOT in our readers’ choice poll is becoming the norm for Piccolo Mondo. Indeed, this is the third year the upscale Italian eatery has garnered the most votes in a category – its third category, for the record. In 2014, it was voted best place for a special occasion. Last year, it won top honors in the Italian food category, and this year, Piccolo Mondo rules the land of lunch. Owner Antonio Capaccioli believes the restaurant’s food is what draws people to the place. “We’re more traditional in style,” he says. “I traveled a lot when I was younger, and when I found something I liked to eat, I took note. When we opened here, we offered things I liked to eat myself.” In addition to incredible cuisine, Piccolo Mondo has ample ambience, with its piano bar, and for big groups it offers a banquet room.

Bishop Family Dentistry maintains that small town service with advanced dental technology. The younger Bishop says he loves what he does – and where he does it. “Arlington is a unique town,” he says. “Even though it boasts of a population of over 365,000 residents, it still maintains its small town identity.” What makes the practice unique? Dr. Bishop and his long-time staff regard their patients as part of the family. “We work together as a team to provide the highest quality of dental care for every patient,” he says. “Our practice is dedicated to provide uncompromising excellence in dentistry while creating a compassionate dental environment. 906 W. Randol Mill Road • (817) 261-4906 arlingtoncancercenter.com THE ARLINGTON CANCER CENTER was founded in 1980 on the principle that a patient would benefit most from having all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities that they would need in one place. “Over the years we have stayed true to that principle,” says founder Dr. Alfred DiStefano. Dr. DiStefano is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, with a subspecialty certification in hematology and medical oncology. Since the practice joined with Texas Health Resources, it has been able to expand the availability of laboratory testing, imaging, biopsy procedures, chemotherapy and drug infusion treatments. “Becoming part of THR and being in close proximity to Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital allows our patients to access many of the procedures that are hospital-based while remaining outpatient,” Dr. DiStefano says. He cites several factors for the practice’s success – which was confirmed by our readers, who named him the top oncologist for the third straid year. “Our dedication to providing the broadest range of services, in combination with compassionate patient-oriented care, allows us to give our patients the best chance of accessing the best care available while remaining outpatient and close to home,” he says. “My 1980 dream of all patient care in one facility is closer to reality today than ever.”

DR. JOAN BERGSTROM is a three-time Readers’ Choice All Star. A primary reason is her commitment to making her practice the kind of practice she would visit. “Women’s Health Services offers the unique opportunity to have a doctor patient relationship that is based on a relationship and not just a consultation,” she says. “As a group of seven female physicians providing Ob-gyn services, we offer a variety of perspectives on women’s issues for all ages. Our philosophy is that as women, we not only have gone through the life experiences, but we also have the enhanced education to help all of our patients deal with their physical, situational and emotional problems.” Dr. Bergstrom says the doctors at the practice are devoted to developing long-term patient relationships, always striving to build better communication systems. “We all know that time is precious, and spending hours waiting in a reception room, or on hold on the phone, is wasted,” she says. “Our on-line scheduling and patient portal provide efficient systems that women can access at all hours of the day or night.” Women’s Health Services provides well woman exams, complete obstetrical care, treatment for abnormal pap smears, abnormal uterine bleeding, hormone replacement therapy, in-office Essure, ablations, hysteroscopy, and colposcopy. Dr. Bergstrom adds, “We also offer expert surgical options for hysterectomy, bladder incontinence procedures, and vaginal prolapse treatment.”

EMERGENCIES ARE GIVEN such a high priority at Medical Center Arlington that the average ER wait time at the facility is updated several times each day on the hospital website. That kind of attention to detail – and to patients in need of emergency service – are at the heart of MCA’s distinction in this category. As a Level III Trauma Center, MCA is the only designated trauma center in Arlington, as well as Arlington’s first Chest Pain Center accredited by The Society for Chest Pain Centers. Recently, the hospital added more beds to the department to allow ER physicians and nurses to care for a growing number of patients. This fall, the hospital will also debut a pediatric entrance and dedicated rooms for children who often require special equipment and care. “Arlington is a growing community, and the hospital is growing along with it,” says Sarah Riley, Emergency Department director. “We have needed a pediatric emergency room in this area so parents don’t have to drive 15 to 20 miles with a seriously sick or injured child to reach an emergency room. When our renovated room opens with a separate pediatric emergency entrance, we will have unique and specialized equipment to treat children, as well as a highly trained staff dedicated to helping kids.”

Winner: Dr. Lisa B. Fell
Honorable Mention: Dr. Allison Farrell
WHILE DR. LISA B. FELL was the Readers’ Choice among local audiologists, she says both she and her partner at the practice, Dr. Kristin Robbins, are celebrating the success of Audiology Experts this month. In August 2008, these two clinical audiologists opened their own audiology practice. “Our mission was simple: provide the kind of hearing healthcare that is needed for success with hearing instruments, but do it while being the best mothers and wives we could be to our families,” Dr. Fell says. “We wanted to balance career and motherhood. It was a leap of faith, but we have never looked back,” says Dr. Robbins. Hearing loss is difficult for anyone to experience. Dr. Fell says, “we are committed to the people and families we serve because hearing loss has such negative consequences when it is unmanaged.”
ALLISON FARRELL, Au.D., joined the team at Cross Timbers ENT in 2008. Cross Timbers ENT is a team of physicians and audiologists committed to providing excellent care through personalized, attentive services for the prevention, identification and rehabilitation of hearing loss and other ear, nose and throat conditions. “Our audiology department is set apart by the extensive experience of our doctoral-level audiologists in diagnostic hearing testing, hearing aid evaluations and fittings, as well as cochlear implant services,” says Dr. Farrell. She adds that she continues to enjoy the relationships she builds with her patients as she helps to improve their quality of life by providing customized hearing care to each patient.

COMET CLEANERS locations can be found all over this country and at least one more. But you don’t have to go far to find where the company started. Indeed, the original business has served Arlington for more than nine decades, since R.L. “Jack” Godfrey left home in 1920 to work in a tailor’s shop and began his own dry cleaning company four years later. Today, there are more than 185 Comet Cleaners internationally, including seven in the Arlington area, where many of the the customers used this forum to give a collective “well done” to the Comet team for taking such good care of their garments. The staff members at Comet Cleaners believe their biggest competitor is in your house; therefore, they understand that saving you time and money should be their primary objective. That’s why they offer affordable prices so that everyone can take advantage of their services. The company’s mission statement is “To provide fine dry cleaning and laundry services at affordable prices. What does ‘fine’ mean? Attention to every detail – from the attention we show customers to the finished product we provide for them. What does ‘affordable’ mean? Prices that are competitive with other drycleaning and laundry companies.”

As a result, it is one of our double All Stars this year, also winning the Customer Service category. Owner Phil Sellars says doing the right thing and putting the customer first is the foundation on which the business was built. Sellars says the Oaks Cleaners story is a simple one. “It is about being your neighbor and friend,” he says. “It’s about being a place where they know your name. It is friends dropping by to catch up or talk about their beloved Rangers. You may be dropping off or picking up your dry cleaning, but this is something more. We are not just another business, we are a part of the community.” Sellars says he and his team take great pride in serving that community. “We offer a variety of dry cleaning and laundry services as well as home and office delivery,” he says. “Need same-day service? We’ve got you covered, and our convenient business hours are set to serve your needs. If you are a current customer, we thank you. If you are considering us, I promise you will know that you have come to the right place.”

FOR MORE THAN 70 years, Ebby Halliday, REALTORS® has been selling homes in North Texas and is, today, a household name. The Ebby Halliday, REALTORS inventory in 1945 consisted of some 52 houses built on the old Walnut Hill Golf Course in North Dallas. The successful marketing of these hard-to-sell, hardto-finance, experimental insulated cement homes formed the springboard for the steady growth of Ebby Halliday, REALTORS as we know it today – one of the largest privately owned residential real estate firms in the country. “The most important quality about Ebby Halliday is our top professionalism and integrity in everything we do,” says Linda Magazzine, an Ebby broker associate. “Ebby Halliday chooses full time professional agents, keeping the agents educated on all aspects of the Real Estate Business – legal, market trends, etc. The consumer wants and deserves the best in choosing a real estate professional as their agent. Ebby agents are knowledgeable on the current market, which enables them to inform the consumer on one of the most valuable transactions of their lifetime – buying or selling a home for their family.”

JIM ROSS LAW GROUP, P.C., was established by attorney Jim Ross, a former Marine, Texas police officer and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) task force officer who had supervised local offices for some of the country’s most prestigious law firms before opening his own practice in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Ross’ professional experience led him to partner with famed environmental activist Erin Brockovich and prosecute various environmental cases throughout the country. In 2007, he left the big firm life to pursue his own practice. With a focus on litigation, Ross decided not to limit his practice to a particular area but to provide a firm that can handle a variety of his clients’ legal matters. Consequently, Jim’s clients have responded in-kind and have been the driving force behind the significant growth of the firm. The Jim Ross Law Group is a general practice litigation firm that handles cases involving personal injury, family law, civil and business litigation, criminal defense and probate matters. The firm operates on the philosophy that all people deserve representation. “It’s the Texan way and a part of the American spirit,” Ross says. “It’s often said that ‘no man is above the law.’ In America, that’s the truth. At our law firm, we represent people from many situations and walks of life.”
HARRIS COOK, LLP, has built a reputation for professionalism and effectiveness in a wide range of legal matters to give clients a wealth of expertise when they have legal issues. Because the firm has a variety of practice areas to offer clients, the office can handle multiple legal issues for the same client. Areas of concentration for attorneys David Cook and Kimberly Fitzpatrick include divorce and family law, criminal law, business litigation, wills and estates and administrative law. Kimberly Fitzpatrick and David Cook Cook says relationship building is one of the keys to the practice’s success. “We strive to maintain a reputation with clients, attorneys and courts for professionalism and proficiency and seek to aggressively advocate for all of our clients to create individualized, fair and functional solutions,” he says.

IN 1936, the employees of Chance Vought Aircraft Corporation pooled their savings to form a financial cooperative and establish a credit union. They joined forces to help one another achieve dreams, goals and financial success. They were guided by age-old credit union principles, which were based on one philosophy: People Helping People. Over the decades, the credit union has grown in membership and has expanded its services and products. The full-service property management and real estate office represents buyers, sellers, landlords, owners and investors. “We are experienced in commercial and residential transactions to be a true go-to real estate company,” Doskocil says. “We do not just try to sell people something; we want to give them value by offering our advice and knowledge of things they may not have thought of. We want clients to make a solid, good investment in real estate they will be happy with. We want to earn people’s trust in the service and integrity we provide to become customers for life. This is not a hobby or part-time job. We want our clients to leave happy and wanting more.”
SO, WHAT is the secret to earning the top spot in the Financial Services category – not just this year, but two years running? The man who did just that, Derrick Kinney, has a simple answer. “The Derrick Kinney & Associates Team cares about people and families and what is important to them – personally and financially,” he says. Kinney said his team’s compassion and passion make it special. “Whether it’s helping the woman who has worked all her life be able to retire, advising the couple who wants to have enough money to travel and invest time with their grandkids, or guiding the widow left alone to generate enough income to not run out of money – the Derrick Kinney & Associates Team is here to make our client’s lives better,” he says.
