Beware: Today’s trends can be tomorrow’s jokes • By Editor Yale Youngblood

B

ack in college I became fascinated with sociology classes, for two reasons, in particular: (1) I enjoyed studying why cultures behave as they do. (2) I enjoyed studying any subject that had a chance to enhance my grade point average, and sociology always seemed to do that.    I should note here that I never seriously considered becoming a professional sociologist, for two reasons, in particular: (1) I’m pretty sure that if I ever met a professional sociologist at a party he/she wasn’t the person throwing the party. (2) I’m also pretty sure that I never met a professional sociologist, anywhere.    So, instead of plying that discipline as a craft, I generally just dabble – watching and taking mental notes whenever I spot behavioral patterns that intrigue or baffle me.    Here’s one in the latter category: The youth fall fashion scene.    THE OTHER DAY, as I ambled about a local mall (which is probably the best sociology lab of all), I noted some two dozen male teens wearing what we used to refer to as baseball caps. Among that sample group, not one had bothered to fold the bill of the cap – every bill remained straight as a board. And at least half of the teens were wearing their headgear in a manner that might be called “askew” but probably should be called “stupidly sideways.”    Here’s the deal (and any fellow sociologist over 21 years of age knows this): There will come a time when each of these boys will see a picture depicting his teen fashion sense and declare, “What was I thinking?!”    In fact, I made that very declaration the other day. While cleaning the room we use as the office at Youngblood Manor, I came across a junior high school yearbook, which contained a picture of someone who purportedly went by my name. But I know it couldn’t have been me wearing a flower-print shirt with blousy sleeves.    AND IT CERTAINLY couldn’t have been me wearing those gosh-awful, skinny, striped bell-bottom pants ...    Under which you could barely see white dress shoes …    They were almost as ghastly as the matching white belt that probably didn’t hold up my britches as much as it sealed the ensemble …    And, in turn, sealed my fate as a permanent dork.    OK, maybe not permanent. At least I learned how to wear a baseball cap correctly.

Stephen Storms, right, serves aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

Goodman honored with Star Award at Chamber event ATTORNEY TOBY GOODMAN was presented the Star Award at the 2014 Arlington Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards dinner last month at the Arlington Convention Center.    Goodman, a partner at the firm Goodman and Clark, served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1991-2007 and was honored dozens of times for his accomplishments there. He was cited by Texas Monthly magazine as one of the state’s “Top 10” legislators in 1997.    Also during the Chamber event, Al Clark and Charlie Merrill were introduced as the organization’s newest Business Hall of Fame inductees. Clark’s State Farm insurance agency was named winner of the 2014 “Best Agency” award by the Arlington Citizen Journal. Merrill, also in the insurance business, is former director of The Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which is a supporting organization for the Chamber.

The YMCA of Arlington provided more than 700 backpacks to area students this year. Among the Y and school dignitaries attending the presentation of the backpacks were Janet Middlebrooks, Roberto E. Salute to a hometown hero ARLINGTON’S Stephen Storms is part of the U.S. Navy’s celebrated Operations Specialists (OS) team and is currently serving aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.    “Operations Specialists are truly unique because we are capable of working in every area of operation,” said OS 2nd Class Storms, assistant leading petty officer of the Navy’s PM-22 division.    Storms began his Navy career in 2009 when he enlisted with the intent of becoming a nuclear field technician. During Navy recruit training, he changed his job specialty to operations specialist and embarked upon a career that touches – and saves – untold lives each year.    “I chose OS because of their participation in search and rescue missions,” Storms said. “We help make the actual search and rescue plan that ships and aircraft use to locate missing persons.”

A Y-gantic success

THE YMCA OF ARLINGTON donated more than 700 backpacks to students in the Arlington and Mansfield Independent School Districts this fall, marking a substantial step forward in the second year of the Y’s backpack program.    Funds for the backpacks were raised through the Y’s August membership campaign. Each joining fee collected in the month went toward a Y backpack. Last year, 500 backpacks were given to AISD students only. This fall, the program was extended to Mansfield students, and the total number of recipients was increased by more than 40 percent.

Vivacious musician Michael Hix is living the dream – and then some

Arlington’s Michael Hix is a throwback to entertainers of the “Rat Pack” era. It’s little wonder why. Among those he counts as major influences on his career are Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin and Bobby Darin.

FOR AS LONG as he can remember, Michael Hix has had a passion to entertain – which is a good thing, given how much entertaining he is doing.    There are the local shows – he sang and danced his way into the hearts of dozens celebrating with former mayor Richard Greene and his wife Sylvia at their recent 50th anniversary party.       There’s the road schedule that has him touring Texas, from Houston to Amarillo, from Austin to Midland – “and everywhere in between,” he said.    And now there’s the weekly appearances at Winstar World Casino & Resort – an “A” list venue for stars and stars in the making.    Hix, whose vocal stylings, keen wit and ceaseless energy turn a show into an experience, is definitely qualified for the gig. He’s hoping it can serve as the launching pad to even bigger and better

3 Scoops ... 1. Turning negatives into a positive ... Construction

has begun on a world-class cold storage preservation vault at The Unviersity of Texas Arlington Central Library. The facility will house approximately 5 million photographic negatives. “The stateof-the-art construction and high level of environmental protection will help us to answer the diverse research demands of our students, faculty, staff and other library patrons today and generations to come,” said Rebecca Bichel, dean of the UT Arlington Libraries.

2. Magnetized ... Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital was awarded Magnet designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program, becoming the first facility in Arlington to earn the prestigious designation. Only 400 hospitals nationwide – and only 35 in Texas – have been honored in such a manner. 3. A literal job market ... Workforce Solutions for Tarrant County,

ArlingtonAnswers.com, the City of Arlington and The Church on Rush Creek will partner to host the annual Community Job Fair at the church on Oct. 1. More than 14 area resource agencies and 85 employers will be on hand to meet with job seekers. Some of those employers include Amazon, Nestle, Six Flags Over Texas, WilliamsSonoma and Verizon. The church is located at 2350 SW Green Oaks Blvd.

entertainment options. “My dream is to have my own show in Vegas, travel with it internationally, then eventually transition into television.” he said. “I would absolutely love to one day be the host of The Tonight Show, or something like it. But I’d like to take it back to the good ol’ days, similar to how (Johnny) Carson would’ve done it. Maybe something like the old Dean Martin Show.”    If talent is predicator, Jimmy Fallon might should watch out. Hix has that – and more vivaciousness than can be contained. “I jokingly tell people my energy is due to my steady diet of Pop Tarts and Ramen Noodle,” he said. “That is far from the truth. But I would say that my energy comes the fact that I truly love what I do for a living. I feel like the Lord gives us all different talents. I just hope that I can use the talents He has given me to best of my ability.”

Won’t you be my neighbor? Two local families have redefined the term ‘close friends’

B

ack in 1516, Sir Thomas More described a place he called Utopia, an ideal state. But More’s utopia was imaginary: Kandy King’s is real and right here in Arlington, Texas.    Kandy and her husband, Billy, bought their south Arlington home in 1990. Avid party-throwers, their festivities always included Bubba Schafer, a close friend who grew up with Kandy in east Arlington, near the GM plant where both their fathers worked.    At Kandy’s father’s 60th birthday party in 1991, Bubba and his wife, Michelle, saw that the house next door was up for sale. They bought it and thus was born a compound that now includes Kandy’s father, Roy Hargrove, and her mother, Dixie, the founder of Dixie’s Boutique.    The expansive area behind the houses resembles a resort. One of the first things the Kings and Schafers did was tear down fences that separated the yards and add cabanas, landscaping and yard art. The Schafers have a pool and outdoor kitchen, and the Kings’ shaded back yard offers inviting seating areas. A “Margarita” sign designates where party guests can find libations, and there is a stage area for bands, as well as a spot for caterers to set up.    With no stockade fences to stifle air flow, a quasi-tropical breeze flows through almost constantly. Visiting grandchildren and an adorable Yorkshire terrier named Gracie wander freely between the houses.    Kandy says there is a friendly competition with the Schafers to “up” the other one. “We never reveal sources of the treasures we find,” she said.    When Kandy said she wanted a “bottle tree,” Bubba built her a beauty. But then he had to “up” his own project, so he built a 9-feet-tall gazing ball tree on his side.    The Hargroves, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Sept. 27, are the new kids on the block. They were the last to join the compound a little more than a year ago. They had lived in their former home since 1962, when a house on a cul-de-sac with a yard that adjoins the Kings came on the market.    Dixie said Kandy did a bit of coercion to convince her parents to buy it. “She said since Roy is older than me, he will probably die first,” Dixie recalled. “And I would be alone sitting in my room at the end of a long hall in a retirement place.”    A Texas-style utopia is a whole lot better. – Sue Stevens Durbec

The Arlington GM plant is the only facility to produce the Cadillac Escalade.

THE GENERAL MOTORS assembly plant opened in Arlington in 1954, producing the Pontiac Starchief, Buick Roadmaster and Oldsmobile. Wages were $1.78 per hour. By 2012, the plant was producing Cadillac Escalades, GMC Yukons, and Chevy Suburbans and Tahoes – and GM pays $1 million in wages every day at the local facility. THE FIRST EVENT at AT&T Stadium (June 2009) was not a sporting activity. The stadium kicked off with a concert featuring country music superstars George Strait and Reba McEntire, with opening acts Blake Shelton and Lee Ann Womack. AS THE ONLY potential U.S. Olympic bowling training facility, the International Bowling Hall of Fame campus in Arlington features a set of Olympic rings. HOW IMPRESSIVE is University of Texas Arlington’s College Park Center? When it was built in 2012, it was named on Billboard.com’s “Top 10 New or Renovated Venues” of that year. The center was designed by HKS, which also did the architecture work on AT&T Stadium. WITH AN ESTIMATED population of 60,000 as of this writing, Mansfield is the largest city in the United States named Mansfield (and the second largest in the world to go by the name Mansfield).

Don’t miss it ... Food Truck: Fall Series will run through Oct. 24 at Founder’s Plaza/Levitt Pavilion and Stovall Park.    The Arlington Parks & Recreation Department will host two series simultaneously for lunch and dinner. The lunch events will take place on Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Founder’s Plaza, and the dinner events at Stovall Park will run every Friday from 5 p.m.- 10 p.m.

Arlington ISD announces industry experts participating in the development of new fine arts programs, facilities as part of 2014 bond program implementation To advance toward the district’s vision of being a premier school district, the Arlington ISD is collaborating with industry experts to help develop the programming and facilities for the dual language/ fine arts academies included in the 2014 bond program. Industry experts participating in the planning labs for these academies include individuals from The Cliburn, Kimbell Art Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Casa Mañana, the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North Texas. Teachers, staff, administrators, community members, parents and students will also participate in the labs. “We are committed to providing our students leading-edge learning experiences, and the expertise of these individuals will be a tremendous asset as we expand access and excellence in the fine arts for Arlington ISD students,” Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos said. “Meaningful partnerships such as this collaboration are essential as we prepare our students for the college or career of their choice.”

The work sessions will be facilitated by DeJONGRICHTER, a nationally recognized educational facility-planning firm. The first two-day work session will begin by discussing current programs and curriculum and overall trends in education and new concepts for these facilities. This work session will include extensive brainstorming, reviewing best practices in school organization and will begin to translate this information into facility needs. Planning lab participants will also participate in community meetings and a second two-day work session to further refine the draft educational specifications.

“The Cliburn looks forward to a continued relationship with the Arlington ISD,” said Cliburn President and CEO Jacques Marquis. “We are happy to be a part of the development of their innovative new programs and facilities and are pleased that we have a common drive for excellence.” The groups will participate in five work sessions to develop educational specifications, which illustrate the goals and outcomes, activities to be conducted,

AISD Board of Trustees names 2014 Honor School Board

Front row: Dr. Aaron Reich, President Bowie Hogg, Vice President Jamie Sullins; Back row: Assistant Secretary Gloria Peña, John Hibbs, Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos, Peter Baron, Tony Pompa.

The Arlington ISD Board of Trustees is among five school boards from across the state selected as Texas Honor Boards by the Texas Association of School Administrators. This program has honored boards that have demonstrated dedication to student achievement and make every effort to put students first since 1971. The other four school boards selected are Clear Creek ISD, Plano ISD, Midway ISD and Culberson County-Allamoore ISD. “Our Board is a dedicated and highly effective group of individuals who truly care about their role in school governance and work daily to help the Arlington ISD achieve our mission to empower and engage all students to be contributing, responsible citizens reaching their maximum potential through relevant, innovative and rigorous learning experiences,” Superintendent Dr. Marcelo Cavazos said. “They are passionate about ensuring that the Arlington ISD is globally acknowledged as a premier school district, and this recognition validates the

Board’s focus on student success.” The Honor Boards were selected by a committee of school superintendents. The committee’s decisions are based on specific criteria, including support for educational performance, support for educational improvement projects, commitment to a code of ethics, and maintenance of harmonious and supportive relationships among board members. The five finalists will be interviewed at the TASA/ TASB Convention in Dallas, and one board will be named the Outstanding School Board of the Year. “We are thrilled to have been selected as a 2014 Honor Board for our work to provide an outstanding education for the students of the Arlington ISD,” Board President Bowie Hogg said. “This team is truly an active and engaged board with a commitment to strong educational performance and improvement, and I’m honored to work alongside such dedicated public servants.”

Around Town

Local neighborhoods .... Where everyone should know your name – and where they can, thanks to a great program • By Kenneth Perkins

T Arlington has celebrated National Night Out for over 20 years and in the last five ranked among the top 10 cities in the country in terms of participation. NNO’s origins date back to 1984. Since then, NNO has involved over 37 million people and 16,124 communities.

imothy Gavin has lived in his tidy three-bedroom bungalow near Lake Arlington for nearly 22 years, raising a couple of kids, three dogs, a bird, and one unruly cat that walked off one day and never returned. On the second or third week of the cat’s absence, Gavin walked a few feet to his neighbor’s house, rang the doorbell and waited. Nothing. He knocked on the door. Twice. Hard. Still, nothing.    As he walked away, the door opened slightly, and a voice asked what could they do for him. It was Timothy, he said. Your neighbor. “Just checking to see if you’ve seen my cat. Brown, fluffy tail. Noisy.” Hadn’t seen the cat, he was told. The door shut. THAT’S WHEN it hit Gavin, a retired electrician. He didn’t know his neighbor. And his neighbor didn’t know him. It’s a scenario that can be played out pretty much anywhere, to varying degrees of unpleasantness.    When a friend of mine, a youth pastor at my church, told the story of thieves pulling into his driveway, parking, kicking down his back door, and walking off with laptop and desktop computers, televisions, and a rather large lockbox sight unseen, it was startling how this could have happened without a neighbor saying, uh, wait a sec.    “It’s different from the past when neighbors really knew one another,” said Arlington Police Sergeant Vincent Pewitt. “Really ask yourself to name five people in your neighborhood. You may know their car and maybe, just maybe, their faces.”    This is the sort of neighborly passivity fueling National Night Out (NNO), the annual gathering encouraging residents to take a stand against crime by participating in crime-prevention events. Well over 100 groups, including neighborhood associations, places of worship and apartment complexes, will mark Tuesday, Oct. 7, with cookouts and parties in their neighborhoods where police, fire fighters and city council folk will join in.    Arlington has celebrated NNO for over 20 years and in the last five ranked among the top 10 cities in the country in terms of participation. NNO’s origins date back to 1984. Since then, NNO has involved over 37 million people and 16,124 communities. Residents have long possessed a slightly

skewed idea of NNO – seeing it solely as an event to get to know the beat cop and stop viewing the poor guy as The Big Bad Wolf. Actually, the main idea is that residents who know one another can help protect one another.    “It’s always nice to know your neighbors are there for you,” said Pat Struble, whose Fitzgerald neighborhood participates in NNO each year. “It’s a joint effort that pays off in the end.” INDEED. National Night Out is about communities coming together, fighting crime the old fashioned way. “You turn on your porch light, come outside and get together with your neighbors,” said NNO 2014 Coordinator Kim Fretwell. “Find out who your neighbors are. Find out what kind of issues are going on. Exchange email addresses. It’s not just about pulling into your driveway everyday and staying within your four walls.”    Sgt. Pewitt knows what close neighbors do for one another. “We depend on neighbors to get out and be proactive,” says Sgt. Pewitt. “It’s impossible to do this without neighbors who truly care for one another.”    Which reminds me of the 1993 story of Adele Gaboury, the elderly woman who lived alone in a Massachusetts town. This is the one where neighbors didn’t see her but did notice her lawn’s overgrowth and cut it. They noticed her mailbox bursting with letters and boxed them. When her pipes froze one cold winter, they shut off her water. The only thing they didn’t do was knock on the door or peep inside her window to find her on the kitchen floor, dead – for four years.    “Having actual relationships can go a long way,” said Sgt. Pewitt.   No kidding.

he organist strikes the first chord, setting off the chain reaction. Heads turn, and eyes focus on the striking figure at the back of the room. It’s a ritual – and here’s a fact: On this day, there is only one most beautiful woman in the midst of many beautiful women. Here comes the bride ...    Of all celebrated occasions, few are as meticulously planned – and feverishly fretted over – as wedding day. With that in mind, here are what some of the experts in the wedding business suggest a bride should do in preparation of the big day. It is, after all, her big day. The gown Sue Scheele, owner of Classy Concepts in Mansfield, has designed literally hundreds of beautiful wedding dresses, so when she talks of trends, you might want to take note. And today’s trend is ...

“Laces have gotten so chic,” Scheele said. “Ten years ago, lace was seen as matronly and an older look, but lace has really evolved over the years to look very soft, romantic and feminine. The colors have really evolved. We are seeing less of a push for the pure white color, and ivory has become the norm since it’s easier on the skin tone to wear. Ivory lace looks more rich and beautiful than the white lace does.”    Scheele said blush also has become a popular bridal color, and light gold/champagne is more common than it used to be. “We are seeing more and more brides go with an ivory lace and a light gold lining, which makes the lace more rich with the darker tone behind it,” she said. The venue Often, the wedding and the reception are held in the same place. Or the wedding takes place in a church, and the party ventures a few miles

We can also create a package that is uniquely yours.”    Aristide in Mansfield offers one of the more picturesque venues in Texas, plus wedding services that run the gamut. Co-owner Cheryl Nix said the locale is a draw in and of itself. “The area has the look and feel of a small village in the Italian countryside,” she said. “Aristide is beautifully landscaped with majestic mature trees and a creek nestled at the bottom of a hill.”    For that reason, about 80 percent of the weddings at the venue are outdoors on the ceremony staircase, or in the grassy meadow under the trees. “If a client decides they they would prefer to be married indoors,” Nix said, “we have the Grand Ballroom, which is ideal for many ceremony styles. The ballroom is an option for indoor ceremonies. Weather condition is never a concern, and weddings may be held year-round.”    Most of the receptions that follow the ceremonies take place in the Grand Ballroom, Nix said, which also has access to the outside patio where the beautifully designed fireplace and café lighting create a breathtaking wedding atmosphere. The honeymoon While tradition says that most newlyweds will travel to enjoy their first few days as husband and wife, there’s a very good reason not to stray too far from home. The Sanford House Inn & Spa, located at 506 North Center St., offers practically anything a couple could find elsewhere – and then some.   In fact, it is an ideal place for the wedding itself. “The Sanford House is a perfect choice for an outdoor wedding, reception or rehearsal dinner,” said General Manager Valerie Landry. “The large stone courtyard is

My wedding, my story: Courtney Cerza ON NOV. 8, COURTNEY CERZA will marry Alex Henkel at the First United Methodist Church of Arlington. This month, she talks about all that has gone into the planning of that special event. Arlington Today: Let’s get some history out of the way first. When did you get engaged, and when/where did you set the wedding? Courtney Cerza: I got engaged last November. Alex and I met at church when we were both in high school (he went to Lamar and I went to Martin … rivals!) We’ve been together for almost six years and cannot wait to get married at our church. Our reception will take place at the Cacharel Grand Ballroom. Courtney Cerza plans to marry Alex Henkel on Nov. 8 at First United Methodist Church of Arlington.

AT: Once you got the basics down, what were the earliest steps in the planning process? Courtney: The earliest steps were, honestly, just trying to figure out how to plan a wedding! I am the oldest child, so my family has never expe-

My wedding, my story (continued) rienced this before. We made sure to book our church first, and then decided on a reception venue to make sure it would be available. Having a year-long engagement has its perks, especially when both of us were still trying to graduate college. We had no trouble booking our vendors. AT: Tell us about your wedding’s theme.

such a blessing and has put together all of our meetings with vendors, given us to-do lists, and told us all what we need to be doing to get everything ready to go for the big day! AT: What has been the most fun or exciting element of the process so far?

Courtney: I have always envisioned a huge traditional wedding. I know everyone lately has tried to be different in some way, but my “dream” has always been a classic, elegant, beautiful wedding that included as many family and friends as possible. We have all been working hard to pick vendors and ideas that will be timeless. We want to be able to look back at our wedding later on in life and not have to say, “what were we thinking!?”

Courtney: Meeting with all of our vendors has been the most exciting part to me. Our cake vendor, Cakes by Wendy, is the sweetest lady (and makes some delicious cakes!) It was so fun getting to talk to her about my vision for what I wanted mine and Alex’s cakes to be. Another fun meeting was with Nikki from Angelina’s Wedding Center for our flowers. I have never been into floral arrangements, but I am getting so excited to see all of our centerpieces at the reception.

AT: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in the planning process?

AT: What’s the best advice you could give to someone planning to wed?

Courtney: Trying to plan a wedding with our parents in Arlington and both Alex and I in Houston. We both started new jobs in June, so cramming all of our wedding planning on the weekends has been tough. Luckily, our event planner at Cacharel, Angie Bluemling, offers wedding planning services through her company, Black Diamond Weddings. She has been

Courtney: Do not underestimate our local vendors! They are all absolutely phenomenal and so easy to work with. Also, hiring a wedding planner is the best decision we could have made. I am the first person to refuse help from anyone, but having Angie help plan our wedding has relieved so much unnecessary stress.

Sites to behold ... GIVEN THAT virtually every bride has been planning the big day from childhood, the settings for both the wedding and the reception have to be as close to perfect as possible.    In the Arlington/Mansfield/Kennedale/Southwest Grand Prairie area, that’s not a problem. Prospective sites for both run the gamut, from any of the picturesque parks operated by the Arlington Parks & Recreation Department to the panoramic view offered high above Arlington at Cacharel.    The former also has the Ventana Grille, located inside the clubhouse of Tierra Verde Golf Club, where Executive Chef Luigi Cinelli oversees preparation of an array of wedding-specific meals. To discuss planning a wedding or a reception there, call (817) 478-8500.    If you’re interested in discussing a wedding/ reception at one of the parks, e-mail Michael Debrecht, rental and lake services manager (michael.debrecht@arlingtontx.gov).    At Cacharel, wedding parties have two compelling reasons to consider the upscale restaurant as a site for a wedding, a reception – or both. The Grand Ballroom offers some of the better views of the region from high atop its location at 2221 East Lamar Blvd. Plus, there’s the outstanding cuisine prepared by world-class chefs.    Cacharel co-owner Jean-Claude Adam also noted that the restaurant recently implemented updates to the facility, putting in a white dance floor, carpets and chandeliers, thus enhancing its appeal as a premier destination. For more: cacharel.net.    A relative newcomer to the regional wedding scene is the NRH Grand Hall, located at 6000 Hawk Ave. in North Richland Hills. Dianne Hughes, Grand Hall supervisor, said the 10,000-square-foot facility opened in 2012 and now hosts about 50 wedding/receptions a year.    “In addition to the venue, we also offer services such as catering, staging, setup, teardown and cleanup,” Hughes said. “We also work with outside caterers. Our attendants will work with the wedding party to ensure that the occasion meets their expectations, from start to finish.”    To contact an NRH Grand Hall wedding coordinator, call (817) 427-6640.

THERE ARE THREE major things for which a bride should look when choosing a wedding photographer, said Dwayne Lee, owner of Southern Flair Photography in Arlington:   (1) Quality – “Look at several of their sample albums,” Lee said. “Do the pictures exhibit consistently good lighting, exposure and composition?”   (2) Price – “While this is a consideration, don’t make it the highest priority,” Lee suggested. “You usually get what you pay for, so watch out for the cheap photographers. But you also don’t have to spend a fortune, so shop around.”   (3) Personality – “Of all considerations, this is one of the more important things,” Lee said. “Get to know the photographer(s). Know that you like them and like being around them before booking them.”    Lee said there aren’t many differences, photography-wise, between fall and spring weddings, but he did offer one piece of advice: “If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, do understand that the weather is much more volatile in the spring. Have a back-up plan.”    Lee said his experience has taught him that the wedding party in general – and the bride in particular – will have the jitters on the big day. He tries to keep the bride happy and stress-free by doing several things.    “We provide one-stop shopping for many different things and services the bride may need, thus reducing her running all around,” he said. “On the wedding day, we are with her more than anyone else. By then, we are trusted friends, and she knows that we can help handle most any situation. Humor goes a long way in breaking stress. Of course, compliments on how beautiful she and everything else looks goes a long way, too.”

Now, back to the business venture ... It was launched in 1996 when Joan acquired a vacant residential lot on Center Street, and designed and built an 8-room bed-and-breakfast boutique hotel that became The Sanford House. With their experience in the hospitality field, she then turned the project over to her parents to manage.    Meanwhile, Joan’s medical practice continued to grow, but she somehow found time to engage in a broad range of community service activities, including a three-year stint as a trustee on the board of the Arlington Independent School District.    Over at The Sanford House Joan and John’s oldest daughter Valerie, at age 10, was pressed into service as a “weed-puller” among other duties in helping care for the facility.   Replicating her mom’s motivation for something other than manual labor, Valerie pursued and obtained a marketing Women who are making a difference: Here are the members of the Women’s Health Services team: Drs. Lisa B. Fell, Au. D. Kristin Robbins, Au. D. Audiology Experts 1261 W. Green Oaks Blvd., Suite 105 (817) 451-4818 • Appointments@AudiologyExperts.com AudiologyExperts.com How long has your practice been in operation? Dr. Robbins and I celebrated our sixth anniversary in August. We are steadily growing and establishing ourselves as one of the premier offices for hearing healthcare in Arlington. We were friends and fellow audiology students at Texas Tech University. In 2000, we began working together in a medical ENT clinic here in Arlington. We opened the doors at Audiology Experts in August of 2008. What services does Audiology Experts provide? Professional hearing heath-

care • Diagnostic hearing assessment • Tinnitus evaluation and management • Solutions for easier communication • Hearing aid selection and fittings • On-site hearing aid repair • Custom solutions for hearing protection • Expert hearing care package

What sets it apart from others in the area? We are co-owners and longtime friends. Two women starting and operating an audiology practice is somewhat rare in the industry – especially since many of the hearing aid places are owned by large corporations.    Getting your hearing healthcare at the same place you get bulk food and toilet paper may not be the best idea. When you talk to an individual (or to a spouse or significant other) about hearing loss and how it impacts your life, it can stir up some emotion. Being comfortable in a private environment, and being with a

professional who obviously and genuinely cares, is definitely a more effective way of managing your hearing, hearing instruments and the expectations that come with them.    By being independently owned and operated, we are able to ensure that the people we treat are getting the very best care we have to offer. Our dedication to people and their better communication and our dedication to excellent service are definitely paramount in our success as a small business.    Another advantage to being co-owners is that our patients get two audiologists – we have peer-to-peer discussions on challenging cases, which translates into better care for our patients. We trust each other in our care for our patients – which means if I’m on vacation my patients can still call if a problem arises, and Dr. Robbins will take care of them for me, and vice versa.    Personal accreditation, awards, etc.: We are licensed Texas Audiologists. We are Board Certified in Audiology. Board certification means we maintain continuing education credits above and beyond what is required for clinical practice. The certification also demonstrates a commitment to excellence through lifelong learning. We have both received the Award for Excellence in Continuing Education.

What is the nicest thing a patient has said? Fortunately, we are providers for

some of the kindest and most interesting people around. We look forward to having a conversation with them. During regularly scheduled hearing aid check-ups, Dr. Robbins and I are able not only to manage their maintenance and any hearing concerns, but also get caught up with the individual.    People want to talk, and listening is one of the things we do best. Just yesterday, we heard about someone’s 30th anniversary cruise, how a grandchild made it into medical school and how beautiful the lavender fields are in South of France. I also got to see an old army photo of one of my patients and heard about the service ribbons he had earned.    People come to us knowing we do more than just clean your instrument and send you on your way! It is a pleasure to take care of them and be the practice they rely on for assisting in their daily communication. We know they have a choice in hearing care and work to make them happy they chose us.

I founded Women’s Health Services (WHS) in 1986. The group now has five female Ob-Gyn physicians: Dr. Joan Bergstrom, Dr. Dawnette Peppler, Dr. Angela Watson, Dr. Kiran Nangrani, and Dr. Sheri Puffer. What services does it provide? Brenda Cureton-Smith Great Skin Spa & Skin Care 3851 S.W. Green Oaks Blvd. (817) 478-2114 • info@greatskin4you.com greatskin4you.com How long has the business been in operation? Three years (one and a half at the current location). Prior to developing Great Skin, I owned FACES Cosmetics in the Parks Mall. I was the first female owner of a U.S. FACES location.

What services does Great Skin provide? We provide services for the entire

family (except the dog). We offer facials for everyone, including teens and men, in addition to anti-aging facials and treatments like oxygen, microdermabrasion, LED treatments, Rhonda Allison Chemical Peels, dark (hyperpigmentation) and age spot treatments, acne treatments, waxing, slimming body wraps, teeth whitening, makeovers, foot detox and massages.    We sell an excellent line of effective, high-quality and very affordable skin care products that get results within seven days. Everything is offered on a single basis or club basis, where you get a customized program developed specifically to meet your needs and you save with club membership and customized programs. We also offer build-your-own spa day packages, birthday and wedding packages, gift certificates and “girls day out” spa packages, as well as offer church fundraising packages to raise funds for committees like single mother ministries, etc.

What sets it apart from others in the market? Great Skin was developed

on a concept based on offering high-quality services and products in a relaxing, friendly and serene enviornment, accompanied by excellent customer service, very knowledgeable staff and service providers, with a pricing model that makes it affordable to incorporate the benefits of regular professional spa treatments into a monthly budget.

The best results from spa services and treatments come from doing them on a regular basis vs. the “treat day” offered by many spas, that stings the budget and results are short-lived. You will find Great Skin to be an interesting place with very-high-quality services that are customized to each individual’s needs. Our clients rave about their skin and the results they get from our products and servcies. We are also offering franchise opportunities.

Personal accreditation, awards, etc.: A1 rating with the Better Business Bureau; support for local schools and organizations, such as Martin High School, Boles Junior High and local church programs and fundraisers. I am a member of the Arlington Chamber, a corporate trainer, and a motivational speaker.    I am a Texas Licensed esthetician, and Great Skin is also staffed with licensed estheticians. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Communication from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisc., and previously worked for The Dallas Morning News and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. What is the nicest thing a customer has said? We hear beautiful compliments

from customers every day about their visits to Great Skin and how relaxing and inviting the spa is. They rave about the results they get from getting skin treatments and say how awesome their skin looks and feels after working with Great Skin.    Last week, a mom brought her daughter in for a makeover for homecoming, and mom was so happy that she put her hand over her heart and began crying tears of joy because she had never seen her daughter in makeup. She was accustomed to seeing her daughter in her baseball cap and high-top tennis shoes, and we showed her how she could still look awesome in her baseball cap and tennis shoes – and look and feel like a supermodel. That made my day!    We often have men coming in to get packages for their wives, and wives and girlfriends sending their husbands and fiances in to get facials, massages, foot detoxing and other services.    We feel so blessed to have an awesome clientele and the number of new clients that are making Great Skin their skincare provider. We are located in a very convenient location among families, busy business people, homemakers, and students, all of whom want services that are high-quality, effective and affordable, without having to head out of their neighorhood.

D

aniel and Kelly Mohorc’s custom-built north Arlington home brings several words to mind: Dramatic. Gorgeous. And certainly, “wow.”    The entryway overlooks a koi pond that’s home to more than 150 koi. Inside, an eye-catching 500-gallon freshwater fish tank built into a curved wall separates rooms without blocking the view.    And what a view it is. Huge windows in the front rooms frame a remarkable view of their green, lush surroundings. The Mohorcs’ goal was “to bring the outside of the house inside,” according to Daniel.

“My wife likes to say, a view is better than a picture.” “No need for curtains,” added Kelly. They do, however, have motorized shades they can lower or raise to filter the sunlight.    The Mohorcs moved into this 8,200-square-foot house in 2003, after 30 months of building with a team led by Mike Wood of Providence Homes. They chose the large lot in a gated community for its privacy and the chance to raise their kids in a secure environment.    When they started building, their children were 2 and 3 years old. Now daughter Riley is 16 and a junior at Oak Ridge, while son Ben,

17, is a senior. From the start, the Mohorcs planned the house for the children to grow into, with features such as a four-car garage and a 90,000-gallon zero-edge pool.    They knew even then it was the perfect place to put down long-term roots. “We love the location,” said Kelly. “We all travel a lot, and it’s so great to be 15 minutes from the airport, in and out of the Ranger game in 10 minutes, Dallas or Fort Worth in 25 minutes. We really are right at the center. It’s so convenient to everything in the Metroplex.”    It’s also convenient to the company Daniel owns, Global Performance Solutions, named a 2014 Outstanding Small Business of the Year by the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and located about two miles from the house.    “We’re obviously committed to Arlington,” Daniel said. “We built our dream home here. We raised our family here. We built our company here. Our kids went to school here.”    Kelly is on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington, while Daniel serves the Arlington Chamber of Commerce on both the Chamber Board of Directors and the Corporate Leadership Council.    “The best part of the house is in the back,” said Kelly. “I love gardening, and this yard is a gardener’s dream.” She mixes in vegetables and

herbs with flowers, and even has a potting room. The multi-level yard is as dramatic as the rest of the property. A nearby four-acre lake was pumped to create several flowing waterfalls. At night, the yard is lit with 90 landscape lights, with pin lights illuminating the waterfalls.    “We use the outdoor cooking area a whole lot,” Kelly said. With its pass-through window, they can pass items from the inside to the outside. Their 1,200-bottle wine cellar also helps with entertaining.    Back inside, the indoor/outdoor theme continues upstairs with two decks off the master suite. One faces east and one faces west, so they can enjoy both the sunrise and the sunset.    The second floor has a multi-purpose room they change around often, and features décor from their travels to places such as Africa and Australia. Their media room has a large screen that lowers, and drapes that shut by remote control to close the room off.    All the home’s bathrooms are unique, such as their daughter Riley’s, which boasts a large window seat. “I think this is the neatest thing for our daughter,” Daniel said. ‘This view she’s got from here is just over the top.”    At this house, though, that’s par for the course. From nearly any vantage point, it is truly a home with a view.

Q&A

Conversation Peter Scott, a financial adviser with the Edward Jones investment firm, discusses fiscal strategies that will help you in both the short and long term ARLINGTON TODAY: What’s the best advice you can give any person about managing his/her money? PETER SCOTT: It is important to set goals. When do you want to retire and at what lifestyle? How you are going to educate the kids? Those are usually the two most common needs. However, it is also important to discover other needs and wants you may have. That is where getting professional help can benefit you and your family. AT: What would you tell a young person or a young couple to get them started in the right financial direction for the future? PS: Live below your means ... don’t spend all of your money! You may not yet be too concerned about retirement, but it would be wise to establish a savings plan to put aside the resources necessary to help with a wedding, buying a house or other short- to intermediate-term goals you may have. Too many people who don’t plan and save for these events find that they will either need to delay, or have to sacrifice, the quality of these things. AT: What if a person or family gets off to a late start in prudent financial planning? How can you help them turn things around? PS: There is no better time than now to begin your plan. If you’ve waited longer than some others, then just get to it now. Make an appointment with someone who can ask you lots of questions about you and what you want to accomplish. All of that information can be assembled, and a plan of action agreed upon in an effort to make up for lost time. It is never too late to make an effort to reach your goals. AT: What’s your take on today’s economy? PS: The economy gets lots of press, but it is usually the negative things that receive most of the attention, and we sometimes miss opportunities because our focus is on that, rather than on where opportunities might lie. We think that it is important to look at the longer-term trends, then make decisions based on your own goals and risk tolerance. There are a few great managers who have demonstrated an ability to “maneuver around the mine fields.” It is important to find a team that is right for you because although we can anticipate what might happen all day long, it is the unexpected that we will need to work around. AT: Where money’s involved, there probably is a trust factor that has to be established between financial experts and the clients or potential

clients they deal with. How do you go about establishing the kind of trust necessary to build and maintain a lasting relationship? PS: It is critical to have a good working relationship. Good relationships begin when your professional asks you lots of tough questions about your self and your family, and you have ongoing conversations about your goals and your fears. Each person is different, and although we all have some things in common, we are all individuals, and it is important that we get to know each other as such. Respect is most important, your professional must respect not only your goals and act in your best interest, but also respect your privacy. AT: What are the more reliable resources you recommend to clients to help them become better-versed about money managing? PS: We use a great many independent sources whose focus is on the longer term and on quality. We tend to rely on those who have shown that they have come through tough times in better shape than others, and have served our clients well. AT: Who are some of the “mentors” you had? PS: Ted Jones, the son of our firm’s founder, comes to mind. Although he has been gone for some time, his gift of partnership in Edward Jones still resonates throughout our firm. Ted always demanded fairness and honesty, and always treated both clients and associates with the utmost respect. He was a good man who brought out the best in people. AT: What’s the most memorable thing a client has said to you after you’ve helped him or her with his/her finances? PS: We would not have been able to retire, or stay retired, if it had not been for you. That was after working together for a few years. We can say that nothing is better than learning that you have helped people accomplish their goals. Now, what actually happened throughout that time is that this couple worked hard all of their life, spent less than they made and created a good investment strategy based on their goals. They did not stray from that strategy in good times or bad. All we did was ask lots of questions and counsel them through it all.

Golf Tip

Turn – don’t slide! How to properly maneuver your hips on the backswing • By Chris Ferguson

M

any players tell me that they’re trying to “load their right side” or “get to their right side” in the backswing, but in almost all cases, that player is sliding back instead of turning. The one thing you must do in the backswing is create space and an angle of attack with the lower body, which allows the torso to fully turn and load.    In the backswing, the hips shouldn’t have any lateral movement, but instead should turn in a clockwise direction, while staying inside the width of your feet. If the hips slide in the backswing, it will almost always cause the right knee to straighten and will place the majority of body weight in the front foot (a reverse pivot).    This will also cause the torso to under-rotate, placing you in a weak position from which to start the downswing. The term “loading” should be thought of in terms of the torso turning behind the ball and the weight in the right foot moving from the ball of the foot at setup to the right heel at the top.    To help feel the proper rotation and load, try placing a shaft on an angle from the inside of your right heel to the inside of your left toe. Practice by making backswings where your hip angle matches that of

the shaft on the ground. It’s critical to keep your right knee flexed and your weight in your right heel at the top of the swing.   Don’t be surprised if your torso feels more rotated than normal, but your arms feel shorter. With the hips turned more sharply and your weight in your right heel, the club will travel on a more inside-out path, and you’ll feel more powerful. If you struggle with slicing or an overall lack of power, this drill is a must.    The key to attaining a solid, powerful position at the top of the swing is to properly rotate away from the ball, which should place the majority of your body weight in the heel of your back foot. Sliding laterally away from the ball promotes a weak, reverse-pivot position.    Play well! Chris Ferguson is head golf professional at Shady Valley Country Club.

Cuisine

Four meals that make you go ‘yum!’ The dining is fine at this quartet of local restaurants, which specialize in great food and good times

T

he Arlington area dining scene is marked by various forms of unique, quaint and unforgettable. Oh, and also delicious – that one’s pretty important, too. This month, we put a capital D on that last superlative as we present the latest round of dishes and dining spots you need to try – either before you move on to the next plane or the next time you go out to eat, whichever comes first.    Be forewarned, though: All of the meals listed below can be habit-forming ...

Rio Mambo

Rosie’s Shrimp at Rio Mambo

This popular local restaurant serves delicious Tex Mex and more – emphasis on the “more.” Take, for example, Rosie’s Shrimp, a dish that elevates shrimp to a new level. The combination cooking of “flash fry and saute” in a spicy mojo de ajo sauce produces a savory blend of taste and texture – emphasis on “taste.” Add a bed of Mexican rice with black beans and salad, and you have what might be the perfect meal. Location: 6407 S. Cooper St.

Cacharel

There are lunches, and then there’s Cacharel’s “Chef’s Daily Special,” which includes an appetizer, entree and dessert – our three favorite food groups. As the picture shows, these dishes not only look appetizing, they’re downright artistic on the plate. Yes, they definitely qualify as “yum.” Location: 2221 East Lamar Blvd. - 9th Floor

restaurant506 Cacharel’s Chef’s Daily Special

In a previous story you learned how The Sanford House evolved into a premier destination. One of its signature entities, restaurant506, certainly does its share to earn the love of the locals. Whether you choose the Wine Dinner Menu, the Pre-Theatre Dining Menu or the Saturday and Sunday Brunch, you’re selecting a delicious combination of savory meat entrees, fresh greens and vegetables, and desserts “to die for.” Location: 200 N. Mesquite

Chamas do Brazil

restaurant506

This restaurant’s name means “Flames of Brazil,” but that only partly explains why it’s the hottest new eatery in the area. The chefs roast all manner of delictable meats over open flame pits and team them with an amazing salad bar and more than 50 vegetables to produce a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Location: 4606 S. Cooper St.

Here are just a few of the meat selections available at Chamas do Brazil. Mouthwatering, no?

See Spot. See Spot stay warm.

e all hope the ice that hit last year avoids us this winter, but we have to be prepared if it strikes again. As we’re grabbing salt bags and firewood (or making friends with those who already have it), our pet’s needs can’t slip through the cracks. Man’s best friend has to stay warm and healthy, too.    As the weather gets cooler and winds chill, some pet routines need to change. Many pets spend a significant amount of time outside, but that shade tree in the backyard may not suffice for protection this winter. Mary Turner, owner of Pet Resort in the Gardens in Arlington, suggests owners make sure their outside pet has an insulated shelter with the entrance facing away from the majority of wind gusts. “We have three relief yards on different sides of our building so we can choose which best limits the wind chill and provides the most sunlight during our outside and walking time,” Turner said.    Much like the turkey and stuffing or stocking full of candy entices humans to loosen their belts, pets typically put on extra weight during the holiday season too. As the cooler temperatures set in and heat

Sound ways to make sure your favorite pet is ‘winterized’ • By Julia Schulz

doesn’t restrict playtime, many dogs are more active. The extra weight is nothing to worry about; the increased playtime also drives their appetite.    Many pet owners associate dog hair cutting with the hotter summer months, but Lisa Praeger, owner of Country Acres Kennels, which has been in business over 40 years, advises hair cutting is strictly for sanitary purposes. It’s not mandatory to cut your dog’s hair in the summer or let it grow longer in the winter. “A dog’s coat will thicken on its own in the winter months and shed in the spring. It’s Mother Nature at work.”    Praeger said pet owners looking to board their pets this winter should tour facilities beforehand to make sure there are proper areas for both hot and cold weather conditions. There are general rules for winter pet care, but the breed, age, weight, and individual health of your pet is the most important thing to consider.    “What dogs need and what owners want are not always the same, but a great boarding facility will be able to satisfy both correctly,” Praeger said.

For more about Pet Resort in the Gardens: (817) 635-5510

Livin’ the good life Pet Resort in the Gardens comes from a rich history that has served Arlington pets well for more than 60 years ily-owned pet care campus. The Turners bought the practice in 1990.    “Out of respect for all that Dr. Farrell brought to this city ... we have kept the name Farrell Animal Hospital.” Mary said. “Before the Pet Resort was built in 2010, Farrell Animal Hospital provided standard boarding for our clients. As the practice grew and clients started seeking more alternatives for boarding while out of town, we began to look into options to expand.”    The search culminated with the creation of Pet Resort in the Gardens, which features eight outdoor play gardens, 30 relief yards and seven separate pristine areas to house animals – all with insulated walls and natural lighting. A registered veterinary technician from Farrell comes to the resort three or more times each day to administer any medications needed and to check on the well-being of the “guests.” Other amenities include special ultra-comfortable enclosures for both dogs and cats and play sessions to keep the animals energized during their stay.

et Resort in the Gardens lives up both to its name and to a rich heritage that dates nearly seven decades. On the former front, the services run the gamut, from boarding to day care, from healthcare to even a spa and salon for pets. That means (fill in your animal’s name) gets to enjoy the good life every time you take him or her to the full-service clinic/resort while you’re away for a short spell or a long one.    That said, what Pet Resort is now is largely due to what it was then – when Dr. J.M. Farrell opened Farrell Animal Hospital in 1947 to begin one of Arlington’s best business and personal stories.    By 1972, when Dr. Farrell moved his practice to 2890 W. Pioneer Parkway, he had became one of the city’s more beloved veterinarians. Enter into the story Mary Wilson (now Turner) – the owner of one of Dr. Farrell’s patients – and several years later, young Jim Turner (now Dr. Turner) – hired by Dr. Farrell to work the kennels. The paths of these two crossed in 1982, perfectly setting the stage for what is today a fam-

Ed Posey was a big winner at the American Horseshoe Pitchers Association world tournament.

Arlington’s Posey wins first place in horseshoe tourney ARLINGTON’S ED POSEY won first place in Class C1 at this summer’s World Horseshoe Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.    Posey went 14-1 at the event and pitched 53.16 percent ringers. He was only 12 spots from making it to the overall championship round, where he would have had to face-off against 19-time World Champion Alan Frances, who scored 90.84 percent ringers. Also in the championship bracket was three-time World Champion Brian Simmons, who Posey did pitch against in the preliminary round at this year’s Pro Tour event in Clarksville, Tenn.    In September, Posey, along with fellow Arlington Iron Bender members, went to the “other” Buffalo – Buffalo, Texas – for a Texas Horseshoe Pitchers Association Pro Tour event. This month the club will participate in the State Singles Championship Tournament in East Bernard near Houston. Posey will be the second seed competing in Class A for the tournament champion crown.    Horseshoes runs in the Posey family – Ed’s father, Charley Posey, has won two Texas championships. One of those wins was in 1979, the same year Ed won one of three junior state titles, placing Ed in the National Horesehoe Pitchers Association record books. Ed also travels to non-sanctioned tournaments to promote the sport of horseshoes.    He and his partner Fred Jurik won at this year’s National Polka Festival in Ennis, Texas, where Ed also picked up the “Most Ringers” trophy with 79 ringers. Other credits to Posey in Class A this year are wins in the Eisenhower Classic in Dennison and the Charles Posey Classic at home in Arlington.

Breast cancer awareness It’s not about a month. It’s about a lifetime of taking care of yourself • By Kory Jones, M.D.

“I We all know the statistics when it comes to breast cancer. They are frequently quoted to us. It is the most common cancer found in American women, aside from skin cancer. Approximately one in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with an invasive breast cancer throughout her lifetime.

’ve found a lump in my breast! What do I do?” This is a very common question asked to most gynecologists and primary care physicians (PCPs) and is a common source of anxiety for any woman who finds herself in this situation.    The good news is that the majority of lumps found in breasts are not cancer, and many women have at least one breast lump in their lifetime. The first thing to do if you find a mass in your breast (or any changes of the nipple and areola or skin of the breast) is to see your PCP for a clinical breast exam.    From there depending on your age, a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound – or both – should be ordered. Most breast masses will require some sort of biopsy in order to determine whether or not cancer is involved. WE ALL KNOW the statistics when it comes to breast cancer. They are frequently quoted to us, especially during the month of October. Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in American women, aside from skin cancer. Approximately one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with an invasive breast cancer throughout her lifetime.    Despite popular belief, only five to 10 percent of these breast cancers are inherited. Fortunately, the incidence of death from this disease has been steadily decreasing over the past two decades. One of the keys to survival, and a good prognosis in breast cancer, is early detection.    In the aforementioned scenario, the patient actually felt a lump in her breast. The ideal situation would be to find the abnormality in the breast before a person can even feel a lump. That is why screening is so important.    There has been much controversy over the past few years about when yearly screening with mammography should begin. However, most medical societies, including The American Society of Breast Surgeons and the American Cancer Society, recommend annual screening mammograms to begin at age 40 – and to continue as long as a woman is in good health.    Mammograms do have limitations. Some cancers or abnormalities can be missed in patients with very dense breasts. Also, additional x-rays,

biopsies and even surgeries can be performed on findings that turn out to be completely benign.    However, even with these limitations, screening mammography is currently the most cost-effective, low-risk, practical and accurate method to detect an early breast cancer and improve the survival and prognosis in these patients.    There are also innovations continuously being developed in mammography and breast imaging to improve the diagnostic ability and comfort.    IN ADDITION, women in their 20s and 30s should have routine clinical breast exams by a healthcare professional at least every three years. If a woman has certain risk factors, such as a significant family history of breast cancer, she may need more frequent physical exams and/or screening mammography/ultrasound at an age earlier than 40.    Self-breast exams still remain controversial, because breasts are constantly changing. Sometimes they seem larger, more tender or lumpier. Most of these changes are secondary to normal shifts in female hormones.    The key is to be familiar with your breasts, the changes that occur to them and the timing of these changes. Being able to detect significant differences, aside from your normal breast changes, could help detect an early abnormality.    As always, if you have any questions or concerns about changes in your breasts, your family history and increased risk for developing breast cancer, or your need for screening mammography, talking to your primary health provider is highly recommended. Dr. Kory Jones is a breast surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital and the medical director of the hospital’s breast cancer program. Dr. Jones specializes in general surgery, with a keen interest in cancers and disorders of the breast. Dr. Jones, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, has been in practice since 2007.

Speaking of Sports

Special moments during a great career Here are some important memories that will always stand out to me • By John Rhadigan

I I am not sure any memory can top that of the night of 10/22/10, when I saw a stadium breathe. After 40 years of futility the Texas Rangers defeated the hated New York Yankees to earn a trip to the World Series. And, yes, I think even Globe LIfe Park breathed a sigh of relief.

ARLINGTON TODAY

October 2014

was interviewed by a Nolan Catholic High School student last month for a class project. He asked a great question: “What is the best story you have ever covered?” Coincidentally, editor Yale Youngblood suggested that I write about my favorite story. Since I have a full page I thought I would share a few of my favorite things, first the story.    As recently as 2004 there was no place in Texas for children with special needs to play baseball. I had heard about a field in Edmond, Okla., that was supported by a group called the Miracle League. Photographer Dave Mammeli and I drove to Oklahoma and found a field with a halo around it. The field was rubber and soft, the fans were kind and supportive, and the dugouts were large enough to accept wheelchairs.    The sights and sounds emanating from that field on an early summer evening were indeed miraculous. We produced a beautiful story full of laughter, love and joy. We actually won an Emmy Award for the story in 2005, but that is not the best part.    After the story aired I got a call from a man in Fort Worth who was so moved by the Miracle League, that he wanted to start one in North Texas. We took a tape of the story to municipalities, civic groups and churches trying to raise money to build a Miracle League field. The first one in the area opened for business in 2006 in Arlington.    Now there are Miracle League fields all over Texas, but I am so proud to have helped bring baseball to kids who had never been able to play it before. For all those reasons that is my favorite story.    MY FAVORITE EVENT was the Olympics in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. I spent a month down under as part of an awesome team. Because of the time difference NBC was afraid if we reported on the local athletes, like Michael Johnson, we would give away the games’ punch line that night. So photographer Steve Stewart, producer Howard Dorsey and I toured the country telling stories.    It was like being a travel reporter as we went to all of the places anyone would want to see if they visited Australia. I rode a camel through the outback. I climbed Ularu in the Aboriginal territory, I swam with sharks, toured the Sydney Opera House and climbed the Harbour Bridge. We met

Texans everywhere we went and loved every minute of our month on the other side of the world. AS FOR MY FAVORITE game, there are a lot of candidates. Super Bowl XXVII in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl was the first one that I covered. I was standing in the tunnel just taking it all in before the game, and a guy standing next to me said, “Wow, this is awesome.” I looked to my right, and there was Garth Brooks, who was singing the National Anthem at the game. The Cowboys won, 5217, and the next day I accompanied Troy Aikman to his appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. That is a great memory.    But I am not sure it is better than the night of 10/22/10, when I saw a stadium breathe. After 40 years of futility the Texas Rangers were going to the World Series. And, yes, I think even Globe Life Park breathed a sigh of relief.    There had been so many ups and downs in that playoff run. From winning the first two games of the first series against the Tampa Bay Rays, to losing the next two at home. From winning game five in St. Petersberg, to losing game one of the ALCS to the hated Yankees. In fact, that game-one loss was so demoralizing that many of us concluded afterward that there was no way the team could come back and win game two. Someone forgot to tell the players that. Not only did they win game two, but they won the series in six games, and the World Series era had begun.    The post-game party in the Diamond Club was one of the best I have ever experienced. Forty years of frustration and futility flushed away even as the Yankees, too, circled the drain.    So, with apologies to Julie Andrews, there you have it: just a few of my favorite things.

There were occasions where the heat was an issue, then it was the cold, and often mosquitoes were a real challenge.    Meals were provided in locations where generous supporters were glad they could help.
