History of pleurotus Ostreatus History: These mushrooms were first cultivated in Germany during the world war I. these were grown commercially around the globe. Pleurotus ostreatus was initiated on experimental basis in Germany by Flack during the year 1917 on tree stumps and wood logs. Growing technology was perfected in USA by Block, Tsao and Hau. Cultivation of different varieties of oyster mushroom was initiated in India in the early sixties. Cultivation of different varieties of oyster mushroom was initiated in India in the early sixties. Commercial cultivation began in mid-seventies. Oyster mushrooms are the third largest cultivated mushroom. China, the world leader in Oyster production, contributes nearly 85% of the total world production of about a million tonnes. The other countries producing oyster mushrooms include Korea, Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Thailand and Phillipines. The present production of this crop in India is only around 1500 tonnes due to low domestic demand. Another inhibiting factor is that export demand orders are large and can be met only if a linkage is developed between producer, cooperatives and exporters. Texture: These mushrooms are 2-30 cm (3/4 to 11 3/4 in) Fan-shaped, grey, tan or dark brown in colour. These are smooth, somewhat lobbed or wavy. Looks like fleshy, white firm, varies in thickness. The fungus has gills which are white to cream in colour, that descend towards stalk. the spore print of the mushroom is lilac grey or white in colour. It is a “white –rot wood decay fungus”
Nutritional value: which are edible and micro-remedial properties. These mushrooms are grown naturally on the land under the tree near to the roots. These mushrooms have vitamin B6 and B12. rich in protein, non-starchy carbohydrates, dietary fibre, minerals, and Vitamin‐B and have no cholesterol, and negligible amount of fat.
Habitat: These mushrooms are consumed in European countries like Germany, Italy in the form of salads and soups. These mushrooms are consumed in East Asian countries like Korea, Japan, China, Philippines, Thailand in variety of dishes These mushrooms widespread in many temperate and subtropical forest around the globe. Only the commercially grown mushrooms are consumed because they are medically fit to be consumed as it nutritional value. They are grown the help of lab technological testings. It belongs to Class Basidiomycetes and Family Agaricaceae is popularly known as ‘dhingri’ in India and grows naturally in the temperate and tropical forests on dead and decaying wooden logs or sometimes on dying trunks of deciduous or coniferous woods.
