ARTIST’S STEEL ROOTS SCULPTURE
ARTIST’S RESIDENCE AET-275
ASSIGNED ARTIST: STEVE TOBIN THEORETICAL HOME & STUDIO DESIGN DURATION: 3 WEEKS
IDEA: Steve Tobin is a sculptor that creates art beyond the preconceptions of what art should be. His main influence is nature, his work can be described as a mix of organic and industrial art. When assigned this artist, I focused on his “Steel Root” sculptures. Tobin expressed that the steel roots originated from Japanese calligraphy. The Gothic arches mean “mankind”; man’s relationship to the environment and himself. Using his influences as inspiration, the home is not perceived as a home from the exterior and on the interior, the home is “carved out of wood” to bring the residents closer to nature.

PRECEDENT STUDIES AET-275
ASSIGNED ARCHITECT: CHRISTIAN DE PORTZAMPARC THEORY CUBE & THEORETICAL POSTER DURATION OF EACH: 3 WEEKS
IDEA: The poster and cube are based off of our architect’s design and theory. My assigned architect, Christian De Portzamparc, compares architecture to art. He believes in bringing life to voids, utilizing playful colors, and filtering natural or artificial light throughout his artistic designs.

“COHESIVE STYLE”
PORTZAMPARC REMAINS HUMBLE TO HIS ARTISTIC BACKGROUND WHILE CREATING BOLD AND TIMELESS DESIGNS. THE UNDULATING CURVES WITHIN HIS DESIGNS ALLOW FOR LIGHT TO REACH AND ILLUMINATE THE SCULPTED VOIDS WHICH ARE ESSENTIAL TO PORTZAMPARC
“I DON’T NECESSARILY BELIEVE THAT AN OBJECT IS INTERESTING IN ITSELF. THE VOIDS AROUND THE OBJECT CAN BE AS IMPORTANT, OR EVEN MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE OBJECT ITSELF. ARCHITECTURE AND THE VOIDS CREATED BY IT CAN PRODUCE MOVEMENT, BUT IT MUST ALL BE SEEN IN CONTEXT, NOT ISOLATED PARTS. THIS IS WHY I INSIST ON THE VOID BETWEEN BUILDINGS”
“FREEDOM COMPARED TO ART”

SITE REDEVELOPMENT LOCATION: LUMS POND, DE DURATION: 16 WEEKS ROLE: Architectural Project Manager
IDEA: Designing a smart growth community within Lums Pond. Working as a team, capstone architectural students collaborated with civil and environmental engineering students in order to follow all zoning and code regulations for this proposal. Through this design, we planed to create a sustainable, modern community that would fulfill all of our client needs and more.
INNOVATIVE ART & ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL IDEA: Blending in with the overall town aesthetic, natural & sustainable materials are used on the exterior of the new innovative art & architecture satellite school. The interior is zoned for public/private use, opening the learning commons and students work to the public. The design process was executed as If the school was a museum; designing bold and intricate spaces with neutral materials, the school is thought as a piece of canvas itself. The students canvas.
