According to history, Ilustrados were known as Filipino educated class during the Spanish colonial period. They comprised the middle class and were exposed to Spanish liberal and European nationalist ideals. Some of the well known Ilustrados include Graciano López Jaena, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Mariano Ponce, Antonio Luna and Philippine national hero José Rizal. Today, the idea of a modern day Ilustrado continues with similar liberal and nationalist ideals, living a well-rounded life and working towards one’s definition of success while making an impact in society. One special individual who embodies what it means to be a modern day Ilustrado is Ramon Sumibcay. Like many Filipinos, Sumibcay did what was needed to create a better life for his family. He was born in San Manuel, Pangasinan, Philippines and had a love of music for a young age and while he wanted to pursue professional education in the art, went the traditional route and graduated with a degree in Foreign Service before moving to Hawaii in search of his American Dream. Sumibcay became attracted to the military and within a few months, he signed up and was shipped out to the naval boot camp training in San Diego. He eventually used his military benefits and completed a nursing degree but returned back to active duty in the Army as a commissioned officer. Despite the challenges that one must go through in life to grow as a person, we discover new passions and learn new things about ourselves as individuals. Sumibcay experienced exactly that living in America and eventually made the decision to make room for his first love of music.

Ramon Sumibcay Our very own Modern Day Ilustrado Since retirement, Sumibcay’s life has revolved in the spirit of volunteerism, civic engagement, community involvement, philanthropic and humanitarian activities. He started his own production company, Island Living Productions and Entertainment, and participated in different surgical, dental, medical, ophthalmology and religious missions in the Philippines. 2020 has been nothing short of a year no one expected but that did not stop Sumibcay from helping out the community. After the Taal Volcano erupted, he participated in a friend’s call to deliver relief goods to the evacuation center in Cavite. They traveled across Laguna and Cavite while Taal Volcano was still spewing heavy ashes and was on the verge of volcanic eruption. He even joined two medical missions in Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur. With coronavirus still very much present in the world, Sumibcay worked with his siblings and nursing colleagues to provide face masks for those working at the frontlines and was able to provide 10,000 face masks. He even answered the call from the army to deploy to Germany. Being away from home for several months in the midst of the pandemic, he sacrificed his time, energy and his

life. Sumibcay epitomizes a Modern Day Ilustrado. He is one special person who has the ability to go through the challenges life has to offer and creates opportunity out of every situation. He upholds liberal values and morals with a passion for serving the community. He lives a well-rounded life, balancing out both a traditional career along with a love for the arts. Most of all, he knows what his version of a successful life looks like and works toward it, seizing every moment and making every single day count. The Filipino community has been blessed to have known Ramon Sumibcay, many of whom are his closest friends. They all agree that he has the zest and passion for life and service. Thank you for sharing your god given talents and inspiring us all. May you live a long and productive life, receive abundant blessings, good health, success, love, peace and happiness all the days of your life. Mabuhay and God Bless!

ABOUT OUR COVER

Coming Home from a COVID-19 Deployment My Hero, Your Hero, Our Hero

Part 1 of our cover story is about the young Ramon Sumibcay who grew up humble and poor in an obscure town of San Manuel back in the 1960s. Coming from a big family of ten, he faced many hardships and struggles. However he had dreams bigger than life and one was his passion for music. But that was discouraged by his mother because his father was also a musician who never earned a living by playing music. Fortunately, he and his siblings had a chance to move to Hawaii in 1986. Not long after, he signed up in the Navy and was sent to a boot camp in San Diego. A decade later, he pursued his passion for music but he also realized there were other callings in life .....

Despite of the restrictions, friends of Ramon, gathered at the airport and in virtual to give him a heart-warming “Welcome to the Hero.” Noteworthy Ramon made it to the cover of October 2020 Cosmolife Magazine (Business Creation Lifestyle International Publication}. He was featured at this magazine because of his illustrious nursing service as a military public health nurse frontliner particularly during this era of uncertainty.

The Spirit of Service seems

to be innate to Ramon’s character, whether service to humanity, service to the community, or service to the country. He is always searching and creating an opportunity to service. His mother definitely has left him a lifetime gift of Christian values.

Congratulations to Hawaii’s Ki’ilani Arruda on winning Miss Teen USA 2020! This beautiful teen from Kauai beat out fifty other contestants to claim the title on November 7, 2020. Originally slated for spring, 2020, the Miss Teen USA competition had to be postponed earlier this year due to COVID-19. Finally the competition aired live from Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee in November. The last time a contestant from Hawaii won this prestigious title was in 1985 when Kelly Hu was selected by the judges and crowned. Ki’ilani Arruda is half Filipino and she is currently a freshman at the University of Puget Sound, studying molecular and cellular biology and minoring in Spanish. Ki’ilani has an exciting year ahead of her representing her home state of Hawaii and also the entire nation in numerous public appearances. ••••

The date of this special show has been changed to Saturday, December 19 at 5 p.m. It will be a treat to watch Jim Brickman – hit-making songwriter and the best-selling solo pianist of our time with 21 Number One Albums and 32 Top 20 Radio Singles in “Billboard Magazine”, perform in the privacy of your home. Since Jim is unable to perform live in Hawaii during COVID-19, this is the only way that you can experience his concert - virtually. There are three different ticket options available. Go to www.jimbrickman.com to purchase your tickets today for this wonderful holiday concert. •••• The Olive Garden Restaurant has opened in Honolulu at the Ala Moana Shopping Center (in the old Bubba Gump’s location). Check on a family member that may not be able to go outside their home and see if they need assistance. Share your caring attitude and good deeds with everyone you know. It does not cost you anything, except your time. It will mean so much to the person you reach out to and it will make you feel good, too. Aloha, I hope and trust that all is well with you and that you are weathering this pandemic storm in good health. These are definitely challenging times for all of us. Please stay safe! The theme for this month’s newsletter is “Mortgage Interest Rate Projections for 2021.” I will try to give you a peek into the future so you will know what to expect as you think about your mortgage loan options. In the meantime, I want to wish you a very Happy, Peaceful and Joyous Holiday Season. I hope that your 2021 will get off to a great start and that it will be your best year ever. Ashlee Sook Cho James, President NMLS#: 368025 Hawaii Best Loans - NMLS#: 397936

From the President’s Desk

WHAT WILL MORTGAGE INTEREST RATES DO IN 2021?

Let’s get to it! Leading housing agencies are expecting an average 30-year mortgage rate of 3.03% in 2021. Until 2020, the lowest 30-year rate on record was 3.29%. Now, experts are saying interest rates could remain well below that for a year or more to come. Low rates mean expanded buying power, cheaper monthly payments, and huge savings. But remember, there’s always volatility in the mortgage market. Nothing is absolutely certain when it comes to rate projections. Don’t base your home buying or refinancing plans on a favorable prediction. If you’re ready to lock a rate now, it’s a great time to do so. With rates still at all-time lows, there is a counter-theory that they only have one way to go at some point next year … UP! As always, some borrowers will get lower rates than the ‘averages’ seen in the news, and some will get higher rates. That’s because your own interest rate doesn’t just depend on the market — it depends on who you are as a borrower.

Who gets below-market rates? It’s usually borrowers who have: A credit score of 720 or higher A clean credit report A down payment of 20% (on conventional loans) A low debt-to-income ratio A home price within local loan limits You need to be willing to shop around to find the lowest rate for your situation. This is where I come into the picture. I can help you obtain the lowest rate available based on your own personal profile. My goal is to always find the best deal for my borrowers. BONUS INFORMATION! 5 STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR CREDIT SCORE One of the most important factors in securing a mortgage loan is your credit score. When scores drift down into the low 600s and beyond, applicable interest rates will become higher or a loan might not be possible at all. Here at Hawaii Best Loans, we have years of experience in working with borrowers and know exactly how to get their credit scores to a level where their loan is possible and rates remain low. Here are 5 quick tips for lowering your credit score: 1. Pay Your Bills on Time ... especially any medical bills that you may have, even if the amounts are low. 2. Get Credit for Making Utility and Cell Phone Payments on Time. ... 3. Pay off Debt and Keep Balances Low on Credit Cards and Other Revolving Credit. 4. Apply for and Open New Credit Accounts Only as Needed. ... 5. Don’t Close Unused Credit Cards. For more information and assistance in raising your current credit score, just give me a call and I will show you the secrets to credit success! I hope that you enjoyed this edition of our monthly newsletter. I’m looking forward to working with you throughout the coming year in an effort to help you achieve your borrowing goals and objectives. In the meantime, If there is anything that I can help you with right away, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks, Ashlee Sook Cho James, President NMLS# 368025 Tel.
