From the Editor...

eing able and getting down to start the year with the release of the first quarter issue of GGQ has always been a difficult feat. It most probably has something to do with the long holiday around the end of the previous year, and how that spills into the new one like a nasty rash.

B

In 2013 it got so bad that we had to forego the Q1 issue altogether, with this editor coming home from his US holiday only in mid-March with little time to spare for

a magazine outline, let alone a semi-complete 40-page draft. Guess what? We’re in the same rut this time around, except that we just might have a way to put out the first GGQ installment in as little time as possible. To do just that we’re devoting the bulk of this issue to Kalilangan 2014 and General Santos City’s 75th Foundation Anniversary -- a most apt diamond jubilee tribute of sorts, as it turns out -- and skipping the printing press (read: expensive and timeconsuming) for good measure. Sooner or later we’d evolve into an online/ eZine-only magazine anyway, so this small dry run into that paperless territory

should be more helpful that just plain trouble. This inevitable transformation would likewise spill into the GensanGazer.com website naturally, eventually showcasing the online magazine as a non-linear reading experience -- rather than a sequential browsing exercise -- in the likes of Condé Nast Traveler and Men’s Journal online magazines, however tall an order they may be. And while we’re still here in New York we’re throwing in a few snippets of winter in the Big Apple, for the second year in a row now the main precursor for all our first quarter delays. Back to Kalilangan, the festival that has gained the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines Hall of Fame distinction is set to rekindle the spirit of merry Gensanhood in my adoptive home town. From across the miles, happy 75th birthday, Gensan! Armando Nicolas P J Editor-in-Chief

Gensan Takes Pride with Hall of Fame Award for Kalilangan General Santos City, 21 November 2013 (PIA) -- The country’s tuna capital is taking pride with the recent achievement of the Kalilangan Festival after it notched the Hall of Fame award and put the city in the limelight as the country’s Best Tourism Event under the Culture and Arts Category-City Level for three consecutive years. According to Cora Tito, Tourism Officer IV of the City Economic Management and Cooperative Development Office (CEMCDO) under the City Mayor’s Office, the third recognition was conferred by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) during the 2013 Pearl Awards in Legazpi

City last month. “This is the third consecutive win for General Santos, so next year the city will receive the Hall of Fame recognition, a grand slam,” she enthused. The festival, which made Gensan well-known in the tourism industry, is derived from the word Kalilang, which means celebration in the Maguindanaoan dialect. It is a social gathering marked by the exchange of amenities among ethnic leaders, elders, and townsfolk. Former city mayor Darlene Magnolia Antonino-Custodio described the Kalilangan Festival as a “cultural extravaganza” or “a pageantry of unique and colorful ethnic rites, rituals and traditions like marriage celebrations, religious ceremonies, anniversaries, royal enthronements, and other social activities.” The festival put more emphasis on the convergence of the tri-people -- the lowland Christian population, the Muslim tribes, and the indigenous peoples -- who have all made Gensan their home. “It is unique from other festivities as all activities of the Kalilangan Festival were focused on the culture of the tripeople, their harmonious unity, and peaceful coexistence,” Tito said. Meanwhile, Abdurrahman Canacan, Chancellor of the Mindanao State University-General Santos City (MSUGSC) campus earlier disclosed that the university has been working on introducing activities that would showcase the city’s traditions and culture amidst the fast-paced development in the area. MSU-GSC has been managing the Kalilangan Festival since 2011, and is currently on its way in the preparation for and execution of the 2014 festivity, which will culminate with the city’s 75th foundation anniversary celebration on February 27, 2014. Some of the crowd-drawer activities of the Kalilangan Festival are the Salubungan or Parada ng Lahi, which features a reenactment of events when Gen. Paulino Santos and other pioneers arrived here in 1939, and the Kadsagayan sa Buyang or the glamorous streetdancing parade and showdown. (PGFruylan/PIA-Gensan)

hen it snows, ain’t it thrillin’? / Tho’ your nose gets a chillin’ / We’ll frolic and play the Eskimo way / Walkin’ in a winter wonderland. So goes the familiar song, which, because of its winter theme, is often regarded as a Christmas song despite the fact that the holiday itself is mentioned nowhere in the lyrics. Regardless, winter wonderland in New York is an experience to behold. (That is, if you discount the possible disruption and damage caused by severe winter storms and blizzards.) Snow magically transforms the massive Central Park (from top, Sheep Meadow, foot paths, and boat lake included), the neighborly hillside Morningside Park off West Harlem, and the stately City Hall Park down town. White, fluffy snow makes you go, In the lane snow is glistening / A beautiful sight / We’re happy tonight / Walking in a winter wonderland. v

F

inally, an elegant spa to soothe your passion for luxury and pampering right in the heart of the city.

This is Gwapaha Medical Spa. Yes, not just an ordinary spa. It is a medical spa. When Dr. Teresita Ferrariz thought of putting up a health resort in the city, she wanted to give her town folks world class services inspired by her numerous travels around the world. More than two decades of practice as one of the top dermatologists in the country today, Dr. Tess says it is time to give back to the city of her childhood. Dr. Tess, also vice president of the Philippine Academy of Dermatologic Surgery Foundation, Inc. (PASDSFI), used to spend a week each month in General Santos City to check on her patients and clients who have grown in numbers throughout the years when not in her Makati clinic or on one of her constant travels abroad. She thought of moving to a bigger clinic. She instead ended up putting a medical spa. A place where one gets to get the skin care they need and a place where they can indulge in the luxury and privacy of a spa like no other in the city. The added silver lining to it? Dr. Tess now spends more of her clinic time here. Do not be fooled by the cramp but chic reception of this exquisitely named spa. Behind the reception desk at the entrance is a spacious 30-square meter of elegantly designed massage therapy room that has a generous tub, a hot and cold shower and a smoked glass-enclosed steam bath one finds only in the best saunas and health spas in the world. Gwapaha Medical Spa offers a very personalized service by foreigntrained health therapists and exclusive use of the room that has three massage beds. The mood inside can be tailored to one’s tastes – ranging from the aroma, essences and essential oils to the tone of the lighting and tune of soft piped in music. You can even play your own sweet and sexy music from your flash disk. Dr. Tess prides her spa as a dream skin care and health clinic and guarantees a reinvigorating and refreshing finish after a session. Be pampered with the wide array of relaxing massages and the house’s signature Gwapaha Massage – where the East blends with the West – a fusion of deep tissue techniques that includes Thai stretching and Hawaiian Lomi using a blend of ginger, rosemary, and peppermint

essential oils. The couple package that includes therapy For Him (foot spa and sports massage), For Her (coffee body scrub and a combination massage) are a treat to remember.
