KINGAROY BACONFEST 2019! IT’S THE CHI NES E LU NA R Y EA R OF THE PIG AND WE’VE WO R K ED H ARD TO GIVE YOU PLENTY OF REASO NS TO CELEBRATE THE WONDERFUL FOOD GROUP THAT IS B ACO N. HIGHLIGHTS this year include meat loving Melbourne chef Adrian Richardson and a Friday night performance by barefoot hillbilly pop stars, The Pigs. We’re also squealing with delight that Bettie Butcher has returned to conduct this year’s Miss BaconFest Pin-up Pageant. Putting on a community festival such as BaconFest is a massive undertaking and our hard-working committee of Baconeers volunteer thousands of hours to make it happen. This is a talented committee that not only loves its bacon but is driven by a desire to give back to community and a passion for telling the rest of Australia about the beautiful South Burnett. Check out their smiling faces on page six. Our passion for community has also caused us to raise money to support drought-affected local farmers. After last year’s inaugural event you told us you wanted more bacon. We agree, too much bacon is never enough and thanks to our naming rights sponsor, SunPork Fresh Foods, we’ve almost doubled our bacon order this year. You can visit the SunPork team at their Swig and Swine deck within the BaconFest Food Market. More detail can be found on page 26. SunPork has also donated all the pork, bacon and ham to be enjoyed at Wine and Swine and the Long Table Breakfast and worked with contributing partners to provide all the meat needed for our 42 teams of barbecuers taking part in the SunPork Smoke-Off. This sets the BaconFest competition apart from every other barbecue competition in Australia and we’re excited some of Australia’s top 10 barbecue teams have registered to take part. We’ve again been overwhelmed by the support of the South Burnett business community. They’ve painted the town pink with some incredibly creative shop window displays and despite challenging times and the ongoing drought, they’ve dug deep and given generously to make BaconFest a reality. We’d particularly like to thank major supporters including the Queensland Government Gambling Community Benefit Fun, Ergon Energy, Stanwell and Downer as well as our media partners The South Burnett Times and HIT FM. Community groups such as the Kingaroy Men’s Shed have also provided enormous support. On a personal note, I’d like to thank my family and the families of other committee members who have again exhibited extraordinary levels of patience and understanding. We’d be lost without you. So, grab yourself some bacon, be it deep fried, dipped in chocolate or simply sandwiched between two bits of white bread, pull up some pallet furniture and enjoy the spectacle that is Kingaroy BaconFest 2019! BACONFEST IS BACK
WELCOME TO BACONFEST
THIS YEAR’S EVENT LOOKS EVEN BIGGER AND TASTIER
M AK E T HE MOST OF YOUR STAY IN OUR REGION
BACONFEST is back and I can’t wait. The highly anticipated second BaconFest promises to be even bigger and tastier than last year’s highly successful inaugural event. In fact, Kingaroy and the South Burnett were blown away by the amazing support for BaconFest 2018. Thousands of people travelled from far and wide to be a part of the bacon frenzy. From the eating contests, to the now famous barbecue and even bacon ice-cream, it was a feast for the eyes and tummy. And what’s not to love about bacon. The BaconFest committee have been hard at work creating even more delicious bacon goodies and gathering the best chefs to showcase the South Burnett’s pork industry and the importance of agriculture to our region. On behalf of the South Burnett, I congratulate the BaconFest organising committee for their hard work and vision. They literally haven’t stopped since last year’s event, putting their heart and soul into making sure we all have an amazing time enjoying all things bacon. Thanks also to the many sponsors and participating businesses who have partnered with the Festival to bring the celebrations to life. The Festival couldn’t go ahead without this support. I’d encourage everyone to be a part of BaconFest. Spread the word to your family and friends and get a group together to enjoy the festivities. I look forward to seeing you all there.
THE South Burnett is proud to welcome back all visitors who attended BaconFest 2018 and are here this year, together with a large group of new visitors to celebrate BaconFest 2019. Now in its second year, I trust that you will all enjoy the great program the committee has organised. You will be treated to entertainment by local and national performers and participate in a range of activities that will appeal to the whole family as well as indulge in pork themed culinary treats. As Mayor of the South Burnett Regional Council and on behalf of my fellow councillors, we are delighted to welcome everyone to BaconFest 2019. As our region’s largest employer and home to the thriving pork industry, Swickers state-of-art pork processing plant is a major contributor to the economy. This industry has a large value added chain from agricultural research right through to finished product development. Festivals such as BaconFest acknowledges the energy that is contributed by so many organisations who work tirelessly to provide South Burnett events to which tourists can come together and get to know how wonderful a place our great South Burnett is in which to live and work. Make the most of your stay by exploring our rural region’s vibrant and beautiful landscapes. There’s lots to do in the South Burnett. I hope you have the opportunity to experience our region’s friendliness and hospitality. Welcome to BaconFest 2019.

BACONFEST: HOW IT ALL BEGAN A FT ER A S UCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR, BACO NFEST IS BACK FOR M ORE MORE entertainment, more fun and a whole lot more bacon. Although people are starting to get keen for the event, no one is more excited about the event’s second year than the BaconFest Committee, as it goes to show how much of a success the first festival went. Chief Baconeer, and the brains of BaconFest, Kathryn Stevens said she’s very grateful everyone came on board last year after she pitched the idea to her friends. “It grew and developed into the festival it was last year through collaboration with a lot of amazing people,” she said. “People put their money behind us, which we’re forever grateful for, particularly SunPork Fresh Foods, being the naming sponsor to 2021.” Before it came to life, Mrs Stevens said that she and the committee had three aims for the festival. “Firstly, we wanted to tell the story of our region to people outside of the area,” she said. “Secondly, we wanted to tell Australia what a fabulous place the South Burnett is to live and work, and to bring people into the region. “Thirdly, we wanted to create a buzz around town with positivity and give back to the community.” Mrs Stevens said the committee was strategic in involving an array of community groups to publicise themselves or give them opportunities to raise funds for their own causes. “We wanted to make it so that not only the business community benefits, but also the broader community,” she said. Mrs Stevens said even after a successful year last year, the committee are aiming to make a lot of improvements to the event. “As with any event, if you’re one of the organisers you can see ways to progress, and we’ve had a lot of support to iron

BRINGIN G BACK BACONFEST WAS AN EASY D E CISION TO MAKE AFTER SUCH A SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR ACCORDING to BaconFest coordinator Kylie van Schyndel, this year’s vision builds on the idea of bigger and better. “We’re not about changing what worked, it’s about improving them and improving our capacity holding ability,” she said. As an example, to accommodate more interest, there is an increase in food stalls with just under 50 for this year, and there are many more heats included in this year’s Bacon Eating Competition. “For us to grow our audience, we need to make sure we can keep the amount of people entertained and catered for. This includes way more bacon because of the popular demand,” she said. Mrs van Schyndel said the first year’s success owes a thanks to a hard-working committee. “They’re all passionate about our community and work really hard for the success of our whole region, and when everyone’s invested it pays off,” she said. Mrs van Schyndel said the support of the entire community also helped. “Groups and businesses came on board to help simply because they’re proud of the community and wanted BaconFest to go well,” she said. Mrs van Schyndel said the BaconFest committee had the main goal to continue growing until they become a destination event. “Everyone will want to know about BaconFest, and we’ve already had so much attention on us already after last year,” she said. Some of the attention also includes the television show Great Day Out, hosted by Alistair McLeod, that has dedicated an episode to Kingaroy’s BaconFest food goods. “The filming is great for BaconFest, and the idea of Glendon St being filled with so many people during BaconFest is keeping us going when planning gets a bit tough,” she said. Don’t forget to mark this year’s BaconFest event into your calendar, from August 23 to 25.

TOP CHEF: Melbourne head chef Adrian Richardson will be the special guest at this year’s BaconFest event.

CELEBRITY GUEST CHEF B ACONFEST AT T RACTS ONE OF MELBOUR NE’S FINEST THIS year’s celebrity guest at BaconFest is a chef who monopolised that Melbourne restaurant scene. Adrian Richardson, the head chef at La Luna Bistro was hand-picked to be this year’s talent, thanks to his great craftsmanship and love for bacon. However, Mr Richardson said his plan wasn’t always to be one of Melbourne’s top chefs. Mr Richardson actually wanted to become a pilot, instead. “I wanted to save up to get my pilot’s licence, so I got a job working in a kitchen,” he said. Mr Richardson said he had always enjoyed cooking, coming from a food-filled background. “My mother is Italian, and my dad is English, but his dad was a chef, so I always knew my way around the kitchen and had a lot of interest in cooking,” he said. At his kitchen job, Mr Richardson said he worked hard to save up, but his ambitions changed once he started doing lessons to become a pilot. “I realised I enjoyed working in the kitchen more,” he said. After Mr Richardson improved his expertise to a professional level, creating his own bistro along the way, he also travelled around the country to many food events and fundraisers. According to Mr Richardson, this was one of the drawcards to BaconFest. “BaconFest is an event that raises money for the local community,” he said. “Without the community and their farmers I can’t do what I do. It’s good to support them back.” As well as the good cause, Mr Richardson also loves making new connections.
Page 8.
“These events are a great way of meeting suppliers that you don’t always get to meet. I’ve made many good partnerships along the way,” he said. “If they get me back next year I might be able to do some more events with the connections I can make from this year, integrating more local producers and local venues and chefs.” With all of these benefits, Mr Richardson said he was excited enough for the theme of BaconFest. “I love meat, and anything bacon-orientated is delicious,” he said. “I’m very excited to get into this event at Kingaroy, as this is where some of the best bacon in the country comes from.” Mr Richardson will be staying around for the whole BaconFest weekend event, from August 23-25. During his stay, he’ll be keeping busy doing cooking up demonstrations, commentating the BaconFest Bacon Eating competition, helping to cater the Long Table Breakfast, and more. Mr Richardson said with a lot planned, he has some preparing to do, but is mainly focusing on making sure everyone had a good time. “My goal is to make sure everyone who attends has a lot of fun throughout the whole event,” he said.

SINK YOUR TEETH INTO FESTIVAL MUSIC GIGS THE SECOND ANNUAL BACONFEST IS CO MING BACK WITH A BO O M O F E NT E RTA INMEN T, FRO M AUGUST 23–25 FROM the Wine and Swine event being entertained by The Pigs to many local artists expected to play throughout the region, volunteer event co-ordinator Kristy Board said that live entertainment was something to look forward to this year. “The Pigs are great and they’ll make the Wine and Swine event one to remember,” she said. “They’re a lot of fun and they sing songs that people of all ages will be able to enjoy.” While the Wine and Swine is a ticketed event on the Friday night, Saturday and Sunday will feature some free entertainment for the rest of the community. This includes performances or on-stage activities from the Kingaroy State High School Band, Soul Good, Martini Mayhem, Lloyd Back, Skin and Bones, Mr Q, RiSa, Laudy, Amber
Godsmith, Corn Liquor, Muddy Flats and more. Ms Board said they wouldn’t be stretching music out late at night on the Saturday, unlike last year. “We don’t want to do any gigs late at night because we want tourists to go and spend times at pubs and such,” she said. Ms Board said this decision was made to keep money in the area and to help promote our region as a tourist destination. However that doesn’t mean your entertainment will be cut short overall. Ms Board said there would be plenty of opportunities to see those local bands at the main stage in the forecourt and in between cooking demonstrations at the cooking comp stage. Damien Martoo has been chosen as the designated MC to keep BaconFest guests entertained throughout the day.

BETTIE BUTCHER IS BACK: EMP OWERING WOMEN THROUGH PIN-UP THE second annual BaconFest brings another opportunity to hold the much-loved pin-up themed Miss BaconFest pageant. Bettie Butcher, the host of last year’s pageant will be returning to host this year’s event and is excited to see how many strong and confident women get involved. “I’m so excited to be coming back for BaconFest 2019. I had so much fun last year, and I already know this year will be even better,” she said. Ms Butcher said the South Burnett region is close to her heart and she loves coming back to it, as her dad lives in the region. “It’s also great to see so many empowered women in regional Queensland competing,” she said. Ms Butcher has been involved in the custom culture community for the last 10 years, since she followed the lead of local women dressing up for car shows. “I used to go to a lot of shows with my dad, and my love for cars has always been there. Seeing so many women dressing up for these events, I was very inspired,” she said. It wasn’t until she had her photo taken at Brisbane’s Grease Fest that she got the confidence she needed to give pin-up a real go. “I admired the culture because it’s very much the love and

nostalgia of the by gone era… but it’s vintage vibes not vintage values,” she said. “Women love dressing up in these eras, but are all strong, independent women and very much embrace it into a modern pin-up.” Ms Butcher said it’s a very inclusive community that advocates for empowering women, helps connect communities and gives people the opportunity to dress up. For this year’s, Ms Butcher said the judges will have a keen eye for women who put in the effort to dress up, have a great amount of confidence and take on the meaty theme of BaconFest.
SHOW OFF YOUR VINTAGE FLAVOUR THIS BACONFEST BACONFEST’S Pin-up Pageant is coming back after a successful first year and the organisers are excited to get people on board. Volunteer entertainment co-ordinator Kristy Board said this year’s pageant would embrace the themes of vintage pin-up and the bacon industry. “As well as the theme, we’re celebrating the woman you are and the skin you’re in,” she said. “It’s 100 per cent about confidence and courage, while showing off the vintage flavour.” While vintage pin-up traditionally focuses on the 1940s and ’50s fashion era, they’re welcoming vintage-inspired outfits from the ’30s to the ’70s. According to host Bettie Butcher, the pageant will run similarly to last year’s, entwining the themes of vintage and bacon into one grand competition. “We’ll take a number of entrants who will go through an application process, who will have to send a photo and a bio

on them for the committee to short list,” she said. “Then those lucky ladies will get to come and take the stage and the women are judged on their confidence, overall look and the inclusion of the theme of BaconFest.” Ms Butcher was impressed by the creative ideas included in last year’s pageant. “There were BaconFest logos and someone even wore a bacon rasher shawl and those are the little things we love to see,” she said. Ms Board said they would soon be calling out for pageant participants, so if you wanted to get involved, don’t hesitate.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR BEER? WHEN YOU’RE TALK ING ABOUT PAIR ING FOOD AND BEVERAGES UP, SOME THING S JUST GO PERFEC TLY TOG ETHE R.
BEER AND BACON: Matt Kirkegaard from BeerMatt will be bringing a craft beer stall to BaconFest. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED
FROM milk and cookies to wine and cheese, there are a lot of well-known pairings that you’re probably familiar with. But when it comes to BaconFest, Matt Kirkegaard, owner of the Brisbane-based craft beer company BeerMatt, believes nothing goes together better than beer and bacon. And with this philosophy, he’ll be bringing a selection of craft beer with flavours suited to bacon, that will be available for tasting at his craft beer tent. Mr Kirkegaard said you can expect some rauch beer, German wheat beer, and more. “When you think about good beers to go with bacon, you can’t go past the classic German beers, as they love pork, sausages and bacon. It all works well together,” he said. Mr Kirkegaard said for those who don’t know, rauch beer is basically a smoked beer, which can take similar notes to smoked bacon. “It takes on some of those characters, especially if the wood
they use is the same that they smoke the bacon over,” he said. “The similarity makes it a beautiful pairing, and as it’s quite an intense beer flavour, it really works with something as strong-tasting as bacon.” Mr Kirkegaard said he loved the concept of BaconFest, as it celebrates the move towards championing local produce. “You can really see the roles small producers play in the community at these types of events, and that’s the type of shift we’ve seen in the beer industry for over 10 years,” he said. “Drinkers have moved from choosing large, commercial brands, to looking at brewers that are smaller and in the local community.” Mr Kirkegaard said it was changing the way we consume our drinks. “Once upon a time we drank more beer without much thought, but I feel now people are putting much more time into enjoying the experience,” he said.
HOW YOU CAN IMPROVE BURNETT TOURISM WITH BEER THE South Burnett region is known for some great produce. From our pork industry, to peanuts and wine, our fantastic agricultural base has created many different jobs from all across the region. But Matt Kirkegaard, the creator of craft beer brewery business BeerMatt, believes that Kingaroy might also be a great destination for beer, too. “Craft beer started in the major cities, but because tastes are changing universally, we are starting to see regions develop their own breweries,” he said. “By bringing craft beer to BaconFest, it shows that Kingaroy’s tastes are also changing.” Mr Kirkegaard said the Sunshine Coast has thrived with 14 different breweries in its area, as well as seeing breweries in Toowoomba, Cairns, Rockhampton and Townsville. “My hope is that by bringing a wider variety of beers to Kingaroy during food festivals like BaconFest, we’d see a Kingaroy brewery spring up in the future,” he said. “Beer can be made anywhere. You can get Darling Downs
Page 14.
Matt Kirkegaard believes a brewery would be a bonus for our region. PHOTO: PATRICK WOODS
barley malt and have your very own Kingaroy made beer.” According to Mr Kirkegaard, bringing a brewery to town will also bring a lot of jobs. “There were some figures released recently that if you buy a beer from a major brewery like XXXX, to make one million litres, it takes one third of a person’s job because of their factory equipment,” he said. “For a smaller craft brewery, it employs up to 30 to 40 people to make the same amount. That could be at least 30 jobs for those interested in the Kingaroy area.” Mr Kirkegaard also said because of the grey nomad phenomenon, people have an increased interest in travelling to tourist destinations. “Open breweries are great for smaller regions, as they become a tourism landmark.”

Mrs Schablon said the dessert would be showcasing a lot of desserts from JJ’s Kitchen. “They’ll be playing around with a maple fudge with Aussie Pork Supplies’ pork floss on top. Guests will be getting that salty and sweet flavour, while the food still embodies the theme of BaconFest,” she said. “They’ll then be doing a peanut brittle with bacon through it. I’ve already tasted a sample and it’s to die for.”

DURING the pork-themed event, Mrs Schablon said there would be grazing tables for both main meals, and desserts, with a mixture of hot and cold on the day. “The dinner will have local brands utilised throughout the whole process, with produce from SunPork, boasting things like sticky bacon and jam ribs,” she said. “We’ll also do a slow-roasted spicy pork belly, and much more.” Mrs Schablon said they’re also making sure to support local butchers, as the businesses use SunPork’s products within their smaller goods. “These grazing tables are great because they suit whatever appetite you have, whether you want a full dinner or just a little bit, and can work with a range of taste preferences,” she said. “When dessert comes along, it’ll be a combination of me making my own cakes utilising local produce and eggs, etc, as well as collaborating with some local caterers.”

WHEN it comes to BaconFest’s Long Table Breakfast, caterer Roberta Schablon from The Saucy Fork wants to make sure there’s as much local produce used as possible. And for this to happen, Mrs Schablon said it’s all about making connections with the farmers. “In the lead up to BaconFest, connections are our biggest focus when organising the meals and markets,” she said. This is especially the case for the Long Table Breakfast, which will have food entirely sourced from the different stalls expected for BaconFest. “The customers that are sitting there at the Long Table Breakfast will actually have VIP access to the markets that morning, so they’ll get first dibs on the produce,” she said. “They’ve tasted it, so if they liked it, then they’ll be able to buy it and take it home.” Mrs Schablon said this will be a major help to local producers and their businesses. “Julie Foley from Discover South Burnett and myself have a Facebook page called South Burnett Produce Connections, where we try our best to connect different producers and restaurants or retailers,” she said. “It’s working great for those with their businesses on Facebook, but if they’re not on Facebook, the markets still help people gain exposure.” Mrs Schablon said the markets are another way to get this same exposure. “Even if you have your business on Facebook, we’ll still recommend for you to have a stall, because you’ll be able to broaden your market, especially with a lot of tourists visiting BaconFest.” In more of an effort to get local businesses out there, Mrs Schablon wants this focus on local produce to help convince South Burnett restaurants and other establishments to get involved. “What we really need is wineries, cafes, restaurants and pubs, we need them to be using local produce in their menus,” she said.

BACONFEST BRINGS BACON INDUSTRY TO THE NEXT LEVEL A NOTHER YEAR OF BACO NFEST HAS GOTTEN MANY PEOPLE EXCITED FO R THE EVENT SOUTH Burnett food ambassador Jason Ford is excited about BaconFest. Mr Ford said after last year’s success, he wasn’t surprised it would be returning. In fact, he said he expects it to be even bigger this time around. “Word has gotten out about it now, and the people who were waiting to see how it went, saw it was as good as any festival in the country, and even on an international scale,” he said. “There was a lot of social media going on about last year’s event, and so those who didn’t go will be regretting that they didn’t go.” With Melbourne’s La Luna Bistro’s head chef Adrian Richardson on board the BaconFest boat this year, Mr Ford believes the event has a massive drawcard for bringing in more foodies. “I might get a chance to cook on stage with him and do some demonstrations, and as I’ve never worked with Adrian before, it’s all quite exciting,” he said. Mr Ford will also be doing solo demonstrations on both the Saturday and Sunday of BaconFest, August 24-25.

“One of my demonstrations will be making an avocado and bacon bagel, with poached eggs,” he said. “I like to do things that people can buy themselves and easily replicate. “I’ll also definitely be doing more recipes with regional products, showcasing pork products and bacon accompanied by regional produce. It’ll be a celebration of the South Burnett.” Mr Ford thinks BaconFest really opened people’s eyes to the South Burnett being the largest producer of pork in Australia. “We’ve been known for peanuts and beef, but now BaconFest has definitely solidified the South Burnett’s role in the Australian pork industry,” he said.

KEVIN BACON FILM NIGHT YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS OUT ON THIS NIGHT OF 80S FUN. WHILE BaconFest is centred around the delicious, local pork produce and bacon-inspired activities, that doesn’t mean movie buffs will be excluded from the celebrations. BaconFest will once again feature their fun-filled Kevin Bacon Film Night, at the Kingaroy Satellite Cinema on Saturday, August 24. The event will start at 6.45pm and Footloose will be shown on screen. According to Chief Baconeer Kathryn Stevens, this year will be an event of its own. “There will be a hot chocolate bar, and JJ’s kitchen will be working hard to bring bacon-filled desserts and sweet treats to those who attend,” she said. Mrs Stevens said attendees are encouraged to dress up in 80s
gear and have a bit of fun. “People can relive their youth, because who doesn’t love the 80s,” she said. Mrs Stevens plans for Kevin Bacon’s movies to be a reoccurring theme of BaconFest in the future. “We got in touch with Kevin Bacon last year through HitFM and haven’t given up persuading him to come,” she said. “He’s in a band called the Bacon Brothers and management said they’d come out if we can raise $50,000. “He knows that we exist so that’s the most important part,” he said. If you’re interested in attending the Kevin Bacon Film Night, visit southburnetttickets.com.au, search Kevin Bacon Movie Night and buy your tickets online.

SUNPORK TO DECK OUT BACONFEST 2019 S P ECI A L S PI T-ROAST PIG TO TANTALISE TASTEBUDS AS THE major supporting partner of BaconFest, SunPork Fresh Foods are preparing for a show-stopping performance at this year’s festival. Rhys Collins, the executive general manager of the company said visitors will have a lot to expect. “We’ve invested a lot of money into our two sites to make the day special, one being the Swig and Swine Deck and the other being a SunPork Food Truck,” he said. At the Swig and Swine Deck, Mr Collins said visitors can come inside to get a glass of local wine from their partner at Kingsley Grove, as well as ciders and beers. For the ‘Swine’ part of the clever name, they’ll be showcasing a 40kg bacon cured spit-roasted pig at the centre of the deck. “People can view the roast while it’s cooking on the coals, then we’ll shave it all up for people to purchase,” Mr Collins said. They’ll be selling shredded portions of the bacon cured pig with gourmet breads, relishes and cheeses. “It’s one of the first bacon spit-roasted pigs, and it’s definitely a first for BaconFest,” Mr Collins said. The SunPork team are going to toss a sticky, sweet maple glaze through the pig, and Mr Collins believes it’ll be a very tasty treat for people to sample. “We’re aiming for a nice grassy breakout area, where people can sit on some cushions, drink some wine and relax,” he said. At the other end of the festival, they will also be hosting a SunPork Food Truck which they’re calling the Pork Pit. Here, Mr Collins said they’re selling a lot more of the products they produce, including a shredded barbecue pork product, which they’ll celebrate with bacon and potato gems. Some loaded potato gem options include bacon and pulled pork potato gems, as well as bacon and cheese potato gems. However, the Pork Pit’s main feature will be a seven-tier chocolate fountain, where people can grab a stick of crispy fried bacon and smother it in delicious liquid chocolate. “We’re also going to have a sprinkle station for this, just like at an ice-cream parlour,” Mr Collins said. Mr Collins said these ideas are a good opportunity to display

bacon in different ways, as well as showcasing the Australian pork industry in general. “People don’t realise how much of the bacon and pork they buy from grocery stores is imported,” he said. “Events like this are a really good opportunity for us to support the community and help people recognise the importance of buying Australian produce.”

SMOKE OFF BRINGS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONS TO BATTLE THIS year’s SunPork Smoke Off is the biggest yet, with 42 teams getting ready to contend between pork, beef and chicken barbecue competitions. While SunPork organised the event, they are all legitimate Australasian Barbecue Alliance certified competitions, just like last year. One of the teams returning is the Angus Reserve BBQ Crew (previously known as the Manning Valley Natural Smokers), the previous champions of BaconFest 2018. This team from Wingham, New South Wales, is currently placed fifth in Australia, after a year of continued barbecuing success. Country Boys BBQ, from Queensland’s Bellbird Park took second place overall at BaconFest 2018 and are currently placed fourth in Australia, swiftly climbing up the ranks. These teams will be competing alongside local smokers from

the South Burnett, including Fiery Briskets BBQ who came third last year, KSW Up In Smoke, Carnivore Kitchen and GPP Pork Kings. While these local teams are strong enough contenders for the main prize, they will also be entered into a ‘locals only’ division. This division is sponsored by The Little Butcher, who are offering a $500 prize to the local team that finishes first. According to the BaconFest committee, this team will also have their name inscribed on a shield displayed at The Little Butcher, solidifying their BaconFest legacy.

these brands, and we were able to use our partnership to get them on board.” The SunPork Smoke Off is an Australasian Barbecue Alliance qualified event, but SunPork Fresh Foods have taken on the job to sign up the teams and organise the event. According to Mr Collins, there are 42 teams that have signed up, which is a major increase to last year’s 20. “This year, we’re also going to be having a specialised awards category for local teams,” he said. “Although we’re excited about the fierce and experienced competition goers this event will attract, we also want to encourage local teams to sign up, and so they’ll be getting their own prize to compete for.”

ACCORDING to Rhys Collins, the executive general manager of SunPork Fresh Foods, every lucky contender in the Smoke Off will have their meat supplied. “This levels the playing field for all the teams, because they’re all working with the same cuts of meat within the same time frames. It means the competition is anyone’s game,” he said. While SunPork will be supplying the pork produce, they’ve used their connections to supply the beef and chicken categories as well. “Steggles is the sponsor for chicken, and Angus Reserve Beef sponsors the beef ribs category,” Mr Collins said. “As it’s only the second year of BaconFest, it can be hard to get sponsors. DISCOVER HOW OUR OBSESSION WITH BREAKFAST BACON BEGAN AS HOME to Swickers, one of the biggest pork-processing abattoirs in Australia, it’s no wonder the South Burnett is so obsessed with bacon. As well as the pork industry being a major source of employment for our region, people simply can’t get over how good our produce tastes. But bacony goodness wasn’t always a popular choice for brekkie. While bacon and pork were a prominent part of food history thanks to salted and cured meats which were popular in England, Europe and Asia, it wasn’t until a PR stunt in the US in the 1920s that the deep and abiding love for bacon took started to flourish. According to Bon Appetit, this is when Edward L. Bernays, who was working for a bacon-focused company called Beech-Nut, concocted a scheme to jazz up American breakfasts. The bacon industry was facing a hit due to a rise in diet fads at the time, and for pork production’s sake, things needed to change. US companies Bon Appetit and Malone Media Group state that Mr Bernays went to a physician to ask them about the importance

of a hearty breakfast. And thankfully, the doctor had a similar opinion to Adelle Davis who once said, “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper”. In an old interview, Mr Bernays said the doctor advised him that people should have a hearty breakfast, lending itself to a rasher of bacon or two. Since then, Malone Media Group wrote that news outlets took the topic and ran with it, printing headlines featuring variations of “Doctors recommend eating bacon for breakfast”. From there, the bacon industry boomed and an international trend was created as people realised how loveable bacon really was. Fast-forward to 2018, and the 8000 attendees at the inaugural Kingaroy BaconFest provided proof that our love for bacon is still going strong.

WITH an extremely successful first year, they’re bringing the Bacon Olympics back to better than ever. Suzanne Mungall, the organiser of both the Bacon Olympics and the Little Piggies programs, said this year’s Olympics will include a whole lot of silly, novelty, bacon-related activities. “For one of the activities, there’s a maze where they have to go through and find the bacon, all hygienically done in containers. It’s a cross between being as silly as you can without being gross,” she said. According to Mrs Mungall, after last year’s Bacon Olympics, there was a high demand for a junior’s category. “Last year seeing as it was so popular, we had registrations open for only one week and it was sold out. This year, we’re wanting to let kids join the fun, too,” she said. Mrs Mungall said the Bacon Olympics will be broken down into teams of five for both juniors and adults’ categories.

HOW YOU CAN WIN A YEAR’S SUPPLY OF BACON ONE of the most exciting things about BaconFest is getting your hands on the great quality, Australian made pork produce. But when eating bacon turned into a trialled competition at last year’s festival, coordinator Kylie van Schnydel knew it was an event they had to bring back. This year, Mrs van Schnydel said BaconFest will be having eight heats in the Bacon Eating Competition, along with one grand finale. The heats will start at 12pm on Saturday, August 24, and those who are interested in participated can sign up beforehand on the same day. “The fastest person to eat 250g of bacon is the winner of each round,” Mrs van Schnydel said. Each competitor will be in the battle to win a year’s worth of bacon, supplied by sponsor Australian Pork Limited. Adrian Richardson, the head chef at Melbourne’s La Luna Bistro will also be commentating this competition, ensuring it’s as fun as possible. Mrs van Schnydel said it can be deemed as practice for

professional eating. “I didn’t know professional eating was a thing until this, but we’ve definitely has people get in touch with us, and they’re connected to professional eaters,” she said. According to Mrs van Schnydel, if you’re interested in competing for real, there’s only one thing for you to do. “Keep eating bacon,” she said.

BRING YOUR LITTLE PIGGIES DOWN TO BACONFEST THIS YEA R’S BACO NFEST WILL BE ANOTHER, ALL INCLUSI VE EVE NT FO R BOTH ADULTS AND CHI LDREN, THANKS TO THE LI TTLE PIGGIES TEAM
WHILE it was titled Little Piggies in the Park last year, they’ve decided to centralise the kids sector and bring it closer to the BaconFest action, at Kingaroy’s town hall and library alleyway. Suzanne Mungall, the organiser of Little Piggies said this will allow both parents and kids to access the locations easier. When it comes to what the kids can expect this year, there’s a whole lot of activities planned for primary school ages and under. “We’ll have some rides this year, but like last year, most of our vendors for little piggies are actually the community groups,” she said. Mrs Mungall said this includes school P&Cs, Girl Guides, and more. “It’s a great opportunity for gaining local interest for these groups, either publicising what they do or fundraising themselves,” she said. The major sponsor of this year’s Little Piggies is Saint Mary’s Catholic College, who will be doing entertainment and making sure there’s a rolling program for kids. Mrs Mungall said other entertainment will include a house building competition from Northern Agriservices, with straw, bricks and sticks. “There will also be games, crafts activities, making piggie masks, and doing Telstra’s free colouring competition,” she said. Telstra have put up a free tablet for the prize of the colouring competition, which the Little Piggies team are very grateful for. Mrs Mungall said all of the sponsors from last year were really happy with the BaconFest outcome, including Telstra, and are therefore still supporting the event. If you want to get your kids involved with this year’s BaconFest, feel free to bring them along to the Little Piggies subsector, on Saturday, August 24, from 10am until 4pm.

MICK Freeman, Rasher’s Rush organiser, said that he’s hoping for a healthy crowd this year, blitzed with BaconFest themed accessories. “The Rasher’s Rush is a non-competitive fun run, where the main focus is dressing up,” he said. According to Mr Freeman, there will be prizes awarded for the best dressed in the bacon theme. But while it’s a fun opportunity to dress up, it’s also a good opportunity to enjoy some exercise, and if you’d like, something you might want to train for. The rush will have two options, with either a 10km run, or a 4km walk or run. This event will take place on the Saturday of BaconFest, August 24, and according to Mr Freeman, people should gather at around 9am for a 9.30am start. “There will also be a ride happening earlier with the mountain bike club,” he said. “People can start training if they want to, but the main thing we want people to do is start getting excited for the event and designing their fancy dress and costumes.” The run will go from Youngman Street to Memerambi and back, and it will take place along the rail trail.

HOWEVER, BaconFest beauty pageant host Bettie Butcher is not only embracing these words, but is also turning them into a profitable opportunity for a bullying prevention cause. Ms Butcher is a confident woman who doesn’t often let opinions of others affect her, but after an incident last year, she was left rattled. “A guy from America posted a casting call on my page. He was looking for women with cars in the pin-up community to join a Netflix pilot,” she said. “I did some investigating, but there were some alarm bells ringing.” As Ms Butcher boasts over 17,000 followers on Facebook and 5000 followers on Instagram, she thought it was her responsibility to ask if they’ll be paid. “The job description showed how they’d be working many hours on the project, so I didn’t want them doing that hard work for nothing,” she said. “Since I asked, he started harassing and attacking me, and he actually hosted a one-hour podcast bullying the entire pin-up community in Australia, and me specifically, calling us Bacon Bots.” Ms Butcher said upon hearing this podcast, it was a bit of a shock, but the community rallied behind her. “I suffer from anxiety like many others in the country, so the situation really hurt me because of it,” she said. “But him calling me a Bacon Bot, and the Queen of Bacon
Page 34.
didn’t have the effect he wanted on me. Because of BaconFest, people are proud to be the Queen of Bacon. And that’s not even me, that’s the pageant winner, and they try so hard to reach that position.” Ms Butcher already sells pin-up inspired Bettie Butcher T-Shirts on her Facebook page, and so she had the experience to take shirt sales to the next level. “My friend said ‘Let’s turn this into a positive, flip it on its head and do it as a good cause’,” she said. Ms Butcher has had a designer from Melbourne volunteer for free to design some new shirts, and she will be printing them in Brisbane. “I’ve paired with a lot of people to make proceeds go to Dolly’s Dream, to help stop bullying and raise awareness of the effects,” she said. “I’ll be reclaiming the Bacon Bots concept with the design, where it’s me dressed as a space pin-up, holding a ray gun to blast away the bullies. “There will also be three little piggies with me, and it’ll be really cute.” Ms Butcher said this concept, as well as the choice of charity, was a great way to help inspire people to hone in on rural Queensland bullying issues. “I can’t imagine what kids these days are going through, so anything to raise awareness to the issue is always a good idea,” she said.

Tom Johnson said the group had been hard at work for about five months. “But it won’t stop after the event, just like last year,” Mr Johnson said. “Little bits gradually go on, and then when the next year comes around, we wait for the BaconFest committee to come to us and tell us what they want before we go into production. “There have been some changes this year with the seating for the main streets, and the signposts being made will be done by someone else, but we’re still doing the pigs that will go on them,” he said. “It’s all to take the pressure off of us so that we can do the other work that comes in.” Mr Johnson said the men had the BaconFest jobs perfected, however they often got sidetracked by other jobs that came their way. “We have to put off what we’re doing to meet those deadlines. It’s amazing the amount of people who come in and ask if they can have some things fixed up,” he said. “Sometimes we get so many people coming in, that we have to tell them they’ll have to wait until after BaconFest for us to finish the job. “They’re all happy about that, because they all know what BaconFest does for the town.”

Slice bagels evenly in half (for a base and a top) and toast until golden brown. 2. In a bowl, combine mashed avocado, harissa paste, lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. Spread avocado mix evenly on each bagel bases. 3. Fry bacon rashers until crispy, then place on top of avocado layer. 4. Divide rocket evenly on each bagel base. 5. Lay smoked salmon slices evenly amongst all four bagel bases, drizzle with sour cream, sprinkle with chopped capers and chives. 6.
