CHRISTMAS FUN FOR LITTLE MONKEYS WE’RE not lion when we say Darling Downs Zoo is a great day out activity for the entire family. Found at the corner of Gatton-Clifton Rd and Baines Rd in Pilton, the zoo has been open since 2009 and is continuing to develop into a true local icon. Directors Steven and Stephanie Robinson opened the zoo and are continuously proud of what it has, and is, becoming. “The zoo enjoys such a level of support that there is something new to see and enjoy on every visit,” Steve said. “The lions and the giraffes are the big drawcards but we notice that visitors seem to spend longer watching the antics of the little monkeys,” he said. Darling Downs Zoo also hosts Queensland’s first ever meerkats, as well as the only place in the state to see African lions, white lions, Brazilian tapir, and more. Check out the baboons, zebras, giant tortoises, macaws, marmosets, snakes, iguanas, and other species.

Classic gifts like men’s shavers and foot massagers will be up for grabs and remain a popular choice for people looking to spoil a loved one. “The massagers are massive at the moment,” Wayne said. There are new models of Bluetooth speaker hitting the stores, incorporating Google Home which is increasing in popularity at a staggering rate. “The new speakers have that built-in now,” Morgan explained. “So, a lot of people like to upgrade their speaker to have the ‘Hey Google’ feature.” Another great Christmas idea is getting in early for the kids’ student devices, with more than 100 computers on display. “A lot of parents have to buy laptops for school but they can also put them under the tree,” Morgan said. “Laptops start around the $300 mark, whereas previously last year they would have been from $1000,” he said. “They cover all the specs, they’re fast enough for what the kids need to do, and they’ve got a good battery life.” Another hugely popular item this festive season is the drone. “There’s drones starting from $99, which are the full-size proper ones. “They’ve got cameras built in and HD, so they’re really well-placed for the spec,”

Morgan said. Even though smartphone cameras are becoming increasingly good, high-end SLRs and GoPros remain popular. “Actions cams, and GoPro is still a really big thing at the moment,” Morgan said. “With all their accessories you can mount them pretty much anywhere you go — horse riding, snow boarding, 4WD, mountain bike riding, stuff like that. “You can even get a dog mount so you can watch what your dog is doing at the park.” There is also a relatively new

item to the camera scene: instant photo printers. “They’re little polaroid-like printers that run on battery, so you can take it with you and print from your mobile phone,” Morgan explained. Matthew said he gets genuine satisfaction out of helping a customer with their needs. “Particularly when they’ve

Enjoy a guaranteed night of fun and frivolity with the Highfields community THE award-winning Crave Christmas Spectacular will be held at 75 Highfields Road, Highfields on Saturday, December 15 from 4pm to 9pm. The event is a not-to-be-missed community celebration with something for everyone including a wide selection of food vendors, bar facility, boutique market stalls for some last-minute Christmas gift ideas, classic car display and entertainment galore with two stages showcasing a variety of local musical and dancing talent. A selection of local not-for-profit organisations will also be in attendance with merchandise, lucky dips, raffles and hands-on activities for the children. Speaking of children, there will be plenty to keep them occupied. Our Crave Kidz Zone (made possible with the support of Highfields Gardens Early Education Centre), will offer

unlimited rides for $5 including jumping castles, a jumbo slide and laser skirmish. There will also be free face painting. With thanks to Platinum Health Group, an outdoor cinema will screen the family Christmas favourite, The Polar Express, once the sun goes down. There will be a VERY special guest popping into the event with his â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;superâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; side kick. After arriving in style, our special guest will then roam the Spectacular for photo opportunities. The evening will conclude following a fireworks display at 8.30pm (sponsored by Highfields Village Shopping Centre). INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup caster sugar 2 cinnamon quills 2 eggs 3/4 cup cream 3/4 cup milk 100ml brandy 100ml rum 100ml sherry Ice cubes Ground nutmeg, to serve

METHOD

Step 1 Place sugar and cinnamon quills in a saucepan with 1/2 cup

Prep time: 35 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Difficulty: Easy Serves 6.

NUTRITION Energy: 1,317kJ Total Fat: 14g Protein: 4g Total carbs: 21g All nutrition values are per serve. (125ml) cold water. Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves. Simmer for 1 minute, then remove and cool. Step 2 Combine 100ml of the syrup in a blender with eggs, cream, milk and alcohol. Pour into cocktail glasses over ice and serve dusted with nutmeg.

IT’S THE most wonderful time of the year — or so they say. Christmas spirit is everywhere, lights are twinkling around town and many lucky people are preparing to go on holidays.
