Mackay & Whitsundays’ best builders honoured The Awards program is an incredibly important opportunity for the building and construction industry to pause for a moment and truly appreciate and get recognition for the quality of their work and the contribution it makes to our communities. And hopefully, to genuinely take the opportunity to celebrate their own success. Master Builders Housing & Construction Awards cater for entrants ranging from apprentices to trade contractors and small family businesses to the biggest names in the building and construction industry.
Malcolm Hull Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Regional Manager
IN THE current climate of uncertainty and these unprecedented times, we believed it was more important than ever to recognise and celebrate excellence, create positivity, and champion building and construction excellence in Queensland. Our 2020 Housing & Construction Awards program forged ahead and while some aspects have looked a little different this year, there’s no mistaking that the global pandemic hasn’t impacted the amazing entries we’ve received, with the quality just as good as it has ever been, if not better. It is with great honour that I welcome you to the 2020 Mackay & Whitsunday Awards winners’ magazine.
Each year the bar seems to be raised higher and higher and this year was certainly no exception. The excelling quality highlights the exceptional skills and craftsmanship of Mackay & Whitsunday's Master Builders. While the Awards have been run in ISO mode this year and in accordance with the restrictions at the time, our panel of judges continued to dedicate their time to assessing every entry against the judging criteria. Our judges are on the lookout for quality workmanship, as well as assessing the degree of construction difficulty, external appeal, siting and aspect, along with amenities and aesthetics. It’s certainly not the home with the best interior design they are looking for – it’s all about the building and workmanship. After much passionate discussion and sometimes, debate – winners are selected for each category. Each year our members put their business, product and workmanship under the
microscope as part of an extremely competitive process. Their work, whether a winner this year or not, is a credit to the unwavering quality and craftsmanship of an authentic Master Builder. Master Builders has been around for a long time, and because of that longevity we’ve become a powerful voice for the industry. Our members are like our family, and we’re proud to be there for them in times of need, as well as times of triumph. Each year we help thousands of builders and trade contractors to operate professional, profitable and viable businesses that deliver superior quality and craftsmanship to their customers. We’re extremely proud that we have been able to continue to do this, despite the trying times of late. The Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards carry a long and distinguished history of showcasing the absolute best in the industry, and this has shone through more than ever this year. If you are considering a new build or renovation, please consider this book a showcase of the incredible work that can be achieved when choosing a Master Builder. Get in touch with one of the award-winning builders featured here directly, or use our Find a Master Builder search at www.mbqld.com.au. On behalf of Master Builders, thank you for your remarkable work and congratulations on your deserving win. I thank you for supporting the 2020 Housing & Construction Awards program.

A Beacon of quality Red Emperor Constructions scooped the pool this year, taking home an impressive five awards, including the coveted title of House of the Year for their Beacons home at Airlie Beach LOCATED on the beachfront in central Airlie with north facing views, this stunning home showcases the very best in luxury living along with breathtaking marina, beach and ocean views. The Red Emperor team worked with Raunik Architects throughout construction, with ‘a very wet, wet season’ posing a challenge. The most stunning feature of this home is the off-form concrete wall, which extends from the front gate, all the way through the interior at full ceiling height to the second storey, and into the backyard pool. Every detail has been carefully considered and impeccably finished by the team, from the striking façade with concrete and timber detailing, to the sprawling light-filled layout that perfectly frames the outlook. swimming pool through palm trees to the ocean beyond.
An expansive gourmet kitchen is complete with a huge island bench with a sweeping stone waterfall benchtop, a butler's pantry, gorgeous cabinetry and highend appliances. PROJECT OF THE YEAR
Foreshore project wows judges The highly anticipated and award-winning revitalisation of the Airlie Beach Foreshore was completed last year, following the devastating damage that occurred during Cyclone Debbie THE $7.1 MILLION project included a new market site, large carpark and performance stage, an upgraded amenities block, and a ‘beach step’ stadium near the esplanade. A giant playground, civil infrastructure for a tourist bus hub and beach walkways all add to the stunning backdrop that is the Airlie Beach foreshore, for the local community and tourists alike.
Paynters said they maintained a fantastic working relationship with the Whitsunday Regional Council, simultaneously completing the Whitsunday Coast Airport alongside the Airlie Beach development.
The project team conducted regular meetings with the client and their representatives, which highlighted any matters of concern. Specialist consultants were engaged throughout the course of the project, with emphasis on the environmental controls due to the location and nature of the project. The landscaping, civil and specialist play equipment contractor all had significant input into the sequencing and programming of the works, as did the local energy provider, Ergon Energy. The team also liaised with local businesses to offer them additional advertising space on the perimeter construction fence, as well as frequenting some of those establishments that were particularly struggling, such as the Yacht Club, by organising meetings and events. Working so close to the beach and ocean in an Environmental Protection Zone, meant that Paynters required several protective

measures to be in place, to not disturb the surrounding features and iconic coastline. The Coastal winds tended to dry out the freshly poured concrete too quickly, which proved difficult to manage at times. The result of the completed project was a quality product for the community of the Whitsunday region. The landscaping, new lighting and the new features, such as children’s play area, stage, bus shelter and beach grandstand, have all enhanced the presentation of the Airlie Beach Foreshore to the public.

PRESIDENT'S AWARD
Space and flow a winning combination The President’s Award is special recognition of a home that combines affordability with quality workmanship and innovation IN ADDITION to achieving top marks in the standard judging criteria, construction must not exceed $350,000 making it a home every Queenslander can aspire to. Winning the award this year was the Parkedge Abode at Richmond by Executive Living Homes.
Set in a boutique subdivision, Parkedge was designed with family in mind and offers a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. The home offers many inclusions. With four bedrooms, a children’s retreat, easy flowing kitchen with a walk-in pantry, living and dining, this house can accommodate a large family. The main suite is a haven situated away from the rest of the home.
The home features customised cabinetry throughout, using Gunnersens fingerprintless technology. Timber floors offer a warm and comfortable feel. Oversized windows flood the home with light. The alfresco area with the large glass corner stacker doors will cater for any gathering. The slightly elevated frontage meant the home could really boast grandeur from the front. Eco Stone 'Abyss' stone was selected for the garage parapet wall to add a wow factor. Executive Living Homes are a locally owned and operated family business with over 10 years of building experience within the Mackay and surrounding areas. Matt and Kate Vella offer a range of projects from commercial builds, extensions large and small, quality family home constructions and office fit outs.

Pulling off the near-impossible Gangemi Cabinetmakers excel at creating perfect solutions in all situations GANGEMI CABINETMAKERS director Tony Gangemi prides himself on creating the perfect solutions for his clients’ need, whether it be in the residential or commercial space. Tony is a hands-on director who started his business 15 years ago, and now runs it in partnership with his wife, Chanelle. Servicing the whole Whitsundays region, including the islands, they pursue excellence and strive to deliver quality goods and services on time and within budget. Gangemi’s high-quality workmanship has earned them the Commercial Trade Contractor of the Year accolade at this year’s Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards. Their work at the Proserpine State High School’s New Learning Centre was exceptional and included the joinery for five classrooms, one flexible learning area, and a design studio.
This was despite wet weather causing significant delays to the project; this resulted in the manufacturing and installation being scheduled during the Christmas/New Year period. Gangemi Cabinetmakers had already planned their annual shut down, but their team pulled together to complete the project in time for the beginning of the school year. “It was a massive effort, and I am proud to say we did a fantastic job,” Tony said.
“All materials were ordered before all the suppliers closed down for the Christmas break; if the supplies didn’t arrive by midDecember, we were at risk of not completing in time.” All joinery was grain matched, which Tony said was challenging to do when he was processing the different cabinet heights; there were more than 250 sheets of whiteboard and 156 BLUM drawers all with locks in this project.

Standing the test of time Fergus Builders have been delivering high quality homes to the Mackay & Whitsunday region for decades
FERGUS Builders have been in the business of building a better Mackay for hundreds of clients since 1983. Their approach has stood the test of some challenging times and they continue to look forward to the future and working with their clients to help build their dreams. At Fergus, they take pride in designing and delivering high quality new homes as well as commercial and industrial premises for Mackay and surrounding districts. Using their wealth of practical experience, they are leaders in providing buildings of high quality, innovative design and superb value.
Fergus Builders were extremely happy when they were awarded the contract to build the new Mackay Depot in Paget.
Among their proudest achievements is winning the Industrial Building over $5 million category at this year’s Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards for Followmont Transport's new Mackay depot.
The project consisted of a 4500sqm warehouse shed and two-storey office facilities, including staff amenities.
Followmont Transport have been operating in Queensland since 1984 and are a major freight and logistics provider to the Queensland and Mackay region.
The project included 10,000sqm concrete hardstand area, four portable accommodation units and a sunken unloading dock. This totalled over 3100 cubic metres of concrete on the project.

The project kicked off in November 2018 and although there was more than 35 wet days during the wet season, Fergus Builders completed and handed over the project a month early to their “over the moon” clients. The team were also awarded the Health Facilities up to $20 million accolade for the Step Up Step Down facility in West Mackay. Fergus Builders were approached by the State Government to pick up the pieces on a previously broken contract. Fergus Builders accepted this challenge and

became principal contractor for the design and construct project to deliver the highly needed Step Up Step Down units. The purpose of these units is to deliver vital support to people in need in the Mackay area, focusing on mental health. This specifically designed project can have 10 patients staying at the facility at one time, which includes bathrooms in each room. There is also a staff bedroom, with bathroom and kitchen facilities. A large kitchen and lounge room provides a warm and inviting feel for the duration of patient stays. There were many issues with the project site that Fergus Builders had to overcome, including the site being classified as a fully contaminated site due to pre-existing ground conditions. Through expert site and project management, Fergus Builders were able to move forward and complete the project within project timeframes and to the client’s joy, under the initial contract price. They pride themselves on helping to deliver key projects like this to the Mackay region. Fergus Builders are also exceptionally proud to have worked on the CQ Rescue Hangar Redevelopment. This project was challenging from the start
with a lifesaving operation like CQ Rescue that operates 24/7. They were required to manage the construction work, with the priority to always give the chopper crew access to allow them to carry out their critical roles. Although the night crew were moved off site, the Fergus Builders team had to stage the works to allow critical operational rooms to remain live while works were completed. The project was completed in two stages. Stage 1 was to complete the new offices and workshop, and mezzanine within the hanger, while Stage 2 was to extend out and up the original two-storey administration area. One of most critical factors faced throughout both stages was minimising construction dust
to the hangar environment as the helicopters were regularly having preventative maintenance carried out when not in the air. Stage 2 also presented a challenge of maintaining security to the hangar and limiting the impact of weather as the project included demolishing the upper roof and walls. The redevelopment also created new crew sleeping quarters, crew amenities, administration offices, boardroom and staff break out areas. The completed works has allowed the entire CQ Rescue operations to once again be under the one roof, after spending the past few years separated due to limited office space.
