Designed as a quiet sanctuary overlooking the atrium for visiting guests, with its own walk-in robe and floor-toceiling tiled ensuite. With a full-sized tennis court and oceanside magnesium swimming pool, this technologyinfused home was designed with lifestyle in mind.

Eco centre reveals local talent The new Mon Repos Turtle Centre uses state-of-the-art technology to provide visitors with the ultimate turtle experience all year round
TAKING OUT Project of the Year honours, the centre is a uniquely angular structure, nestled behind the sand dunes. It uses natural products that will age over time to blend with the environment. Complex in design, it is built from locally grown, certified Spotted Gum timber and is an impressive framework of diagonal timber beams, known as a diagrid. It is possibly the largest diagrid in Australia. The building is clad with timber and copper cladding that will oxidise and turn green over time. Triangular ceiling feature panels made of Tallowwood timber battens catch the eye at the entrance of the building. The interior is an immersive space using digital technology to project images onto approximately 60sqm of LCD screens and sandy beach. Approximately 884 perforated triangular ply ceiling panels integrated between the gluelaminated Spotted Gum framework were used to create an impressive canopy over the
polished concrete floors. Eye-catching, custom joinery counters, interpretive displays and a retail area fit out complement the architecture. Four skylights fitted with two layers of louvre windows, and hydraulic lift up doors have been designed to facilitate natural ventilation.
The louvre windows in the skylights are fitted with both clear glass and black louvres to minimise light spill at night and are automatically operated by light, temperature and rain sensors to climatically adjust as required. The centre also includes an incubator room, wet lab, offices and meeting rooms providing

staff and rangers top class facilities to carry out their research and conservation work. Timber framed glazing above timber feature panels separates the offices from the public arena, while allowing natural light to infiltrate the complex. This modern and impressive building offers Mon Repos and the Bundaberg region a firstclass facility to show off the extraordinary marine turtles and the conservation and research programs that are critical to the survival of the endangered loggerhead turtle population. Winning Builder Murchie Constructions were proud to be a part of this project and engaged local subcontractors and suppliers wherever possible. It allowed apprentices in the region the opportunity to experience building techniques and materials not frequently used in the industry, some of which they may never experience again. This project was unique, and demonstrated the high level of skill and quality workmanship the region has to offer.

Style on show in perfect Peppermint Hervey Bay builders, NH Homes have won the coveted President's Award for their sophisticated , yet functional Peppermint project THE PRESIDENT'S Award is special recognition of a home that combines affordability with quality workmanship and innovation. In addition to achieving top marks in the standard judging criteria, the construction cost must not exceed $350,000, making it a home every Queenslander can aspire to. Winning the award this year is NH Homes for the Peppermint project. The four-bedroom home offers the style and functionality a family needs. The modern kitchen features stone benchtops, open shelving to island bench, 900mm freestanding oven and gas cooktop and walk-in pantry with sensor light. Easy to maintain vinyl planks run throughout the living areas of this home with quality carpet to all bedrooms and the media room. The bathroom and ensuite are tiled to the
ceiling with niches to the showers and recessed mirrored shaving cabinets providing extra storage above the custom-built vanities.
This home features not only a media room but also a second multi-purpose or activity room adjacent to the study with built-in desk and filing drawer. There is an option to connect these two spaces via an operable aluminium shutter. Perfect for entertaining, the home features an expansive alfresco area complete with outdoor kitchen, ceiling fan and exposed aggregate flooring.

Teamwork key to success Stroud Home Wide Bay have celebrated a big year with multiple award wins THE TEAM at Stroud Homes Wide Bay were thrilled to celebrate a series of wins at this year’s Master Builders Wide Bay Burnett Housing & Construction Awards. While the celebration looked very different this year, the team still made sure to celebrate their successes and those of everyone in the local building industry. Stroud Homes Wide Bay owners Slade and Aletha Walters said while there was no physical awards night, they made sure they got together to watch the virtual ceremony. “It was great to celebrate our local industry and the amazing homes that were seen built across the region over the past 12 months,” Slade said. In this year’s awards, Stroud Homes Wide Bay took out the following categories: • Best Residential Bathroom • Best Residential Kitchen • Best use of a Sloping Site • Display Home $251,000- $350,000 • Individual Home up to $250,000 Their entry Three Pines Lodge at Cordalba, which won the Best Residential Bathroom and Kitchen awards, is a stunning acreage home with all the bells and whistles.
Bronte Custom at River Heads involved building the popular Bronte design on stumps to suit the slope of the site. The stunning Kentucky 260 Mountain home was named Best Display Home $251,000$350,000. Wildflower Hampton, Bargara is the company’s first win with the Hampton design; and the team loved this extra special home. “It’s really important to continually showcase our amazing designs,” Aletha said. “We are proud of the homes that we build for our clients and we are always excited to celebrate our successes on a local level and continually inform the local region on what we
have to offer.” The past year has been a big one for Stroud Homes Wide Bay, as they opened a new Stroud franchise in Gympie and expanded their Bundaberg and Fraser Coast businesses. “I really think the key to our success is our amazing team; they work so well together and ensure that we continue to strive higher and all dig deep when needed to assist each other and move forward as a leading builder in our region,” Slade said. “We are excited about our recent expansion to Gympie and look forward to serving the entire Wide Bay region.”

Banking on out of the box thinking Auswide Bank at Hinkler Central Shopping Centre recently relocated to a new tenancy in order to gain more room and better exposure CERTAINLY not the usual box-like joinery, this fit-out offers an angular, three-dimensional look, complex in design and a challenge to manufacture - testament to the highly skilled workforce that Adina Designed Interiors employ. This new Auswide branch is boasting an impressive shopfront of New Guinea Rosewood timber, glass and tiles incorporating the corporate logo and colour scheme. On entering the tenancy, the timber-look tiles lead into the customer zone and teller area
at the front of the shop, with two interview rooms, an office and tearoom at the rear. Dimensional timber panelling on the walls complements the timber framed shopfront, and painted concrete–look walls beautifully marry the grey carpet tiles with the charcoal coloured ceiling. The large countertop made of white Corian provides a perfect backdrop for the purple and orange corporate logo. Multiple laminates were used for cabinetry in the reception counter, kitchenette, storage cupboards, internet banking kiosk, customer
workbench, staff desks and LCD display surrounds. Intricate detailing and specialised hardware were required when making the joinery to suit the bank’s specifications such as key locks to all drawers, heavy duty runners, solid timber and clear acrylic brochure holders, recessed transaction slip holders to the customer workbench, sloped bases of compartments of drawer inserts for notes, adjustable height footrests to teller stations, precise positioning of cable passes and much more.

Building community wellbeing WK Projects specialise in the construction of commercial and industrial buildings with an extensive history in the industry WAYNE Kleidon (owner and managing director) has been building landmark projects within the Bundaberg area for more than 40 years. The company has vast experience in projects such as health care facilities, high rise buildings with basement carparking, industrial and commercial tilt panel buildings, shopping centres, education facilities, civil and hydraulic works and low-rise unit complexes. WK Projects won the Health Facilities up to $20 million category at this year’s Wide Bay Burnett Housing & Construction Awards with the IWC stage 2 project. The client, the Indigenous Wellbeing Centre limited (IWC) is a leading community-based service provider for preventative, primary health and community care services. Not long after completing the awardwinning Stage 1 building, WK Projects was engaged to assist and co-ordinate a design team, and after the client received funding were engaged as the project Construction Managers. IWC Complex Stage 2 development in Bundaberg, Queensland, offers 4553sqm of purpose-built community health care facility. The building is an architecturally designed two-storey building set over an underground carpark for 56 vehicles. Stage 2 has generous proportions with two entry foyers and a sweeping staircase, leading to a rehabilitation gymnasium with Turkish baths and massage suite. Upstairs, Allied Health services include physiotherapy, exercise physiotherapy, speech pathology, dietetics and occupational therapy. Downstairs, IWC Medical Centre expands from Stage 1, with a nurses' station, consult rooms and tenancies, including radiology. Specialists include midwifery, endocrinology, breast screening, cardiology and ophthalmology. It complements Stage 1 services, including medical, psychology, pathology, pharmacy, community and NDIS. Aboriginal Elders chose the colours for the complex – brown and ochre for soil and yellow
for sand. Moving inside, the blue of the ocean rolls up the staircase and shades of sand cover the floor. As part of the Stage 2 build, an 80m-long, 3m-high pictorial screen of Aboriginal history and Sacred Sites of the region wraps the complex. There are 11 panels, two dedicated to the First Nation peoples of the region. At night, each panel is lit with dual lights chosen by Traditional Owners and Elders – green for landscapes, aqua for ocean, ochre for rich soil, and red for blood spilled in massacres. Inside, the artworks and stories behind the panels are on display, alongside a permanent exhibition of Indigenous artefacts. Helping create memories with beautiful custom designs FRASER Coast based, husband and wife team Ross and Angela Scott started Bungalow in Hervey Bay in 2005 with the aim of creating beautiful, custom designed homes for their clients. Angela designs these homes in-house to ensure that there is no miscommunication between the clients, draftsperson and the builder. This allows for a budget-controlled project that ensures owners achieve their dream home on paper and in reality. This was definitely the case for the owners of the project Coastal Outlooks. They wanted to build a two-storey home to chase the views their block of land has towards Fraser Island. “With a limited budget for a two-storey design, we worked with the client to design a home that suited their budget and the style of home they required,” Angela said. The land already had a raised building pad
that the home design needed to fit. “The client wanted the design to have consideration for a pool to be located where it could be easily accessed from the living space to create an indoor/outdoor oasis,” she said. “The end result was a two-storey home with two living areas, an entertainer’s kitchen with butler’s pantry, three bedrooms, as well as a multi-purpose room that could double as a fourth bedroom or dedicated media room.” With a strong industrial aesthetic, the home boasts a feature staircase with open timber treads leading your eyes down the hall towards the main living/kitchen area. Within the void section, the walls feature several sliding doors and windows, flooding the central part of the home with light and providing plenty of airflow throughout. The floor was left as natural concrete with a burnished finish to tie in with an industrial look, softened with oak timber finishes within the kitchen.
A study nook has been included in the main living area which features matching cabinetry to the kitchen. There is a powder room on the lower level to accommodate visitors and to be used by the owners day-to-day. Walking up the staircase, which features glass balustrade with a polished stainless steel handrail, there is another living area, that is located outside the two children’s bedrooms. The main bathroom is located on this level and includes a large walk-in shower, feature herringbone tiles and concrete look benchtops that match the kitchen downstairs. The main bedroom has a large double-sided walk-in wardrobe with feature panelling that pulls double duty as the bedhead. The main bedroom includes a feature corner window which provides views towards Fraser Island. The ensuite includes a freestanding bath, with a shower in a wet-room type configuration.

Location, location, location Some of the first questions and considerations you’re going to have are about where you want to live and what you want your home to look like. But what should also come into the equation is your budget – how much have you got to spend? The thought of owning a new home can seem almost out of reach for many Queenslanders. But with initiatives including the $25,000 HomeBuilder grant, the $15,000 First Home Owner’s Grant (FHOG) for new builds, the $5,000 regional boost and the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme (FHLDS), there’s an array of options to ease your entry. If you’re looking to buy, build or renovate, display villages are located in most parts of Queensland. A visit to a display village is a
fantastic place to see what you like in a home, what options are available and what fits within your budget. There are consultants in each home who will be able to facilitate your every question and can arrange a meeting with a broker if you’d like to explore that path. Show me the money When it comes to sourcing quotes, we recommend getting at least three quotes from licenced builders. Why? Because the cheapest quote isn’t necessarily the best option, so don’t feel you have to accept the first quote you get. When sourcing quotes, the more specific you are about your plans and requirements, the more accurate the quote is likely to be. If you create a job brief setting out exactly what you want and supply it to every builder you’re sourcing a quote from, it should make the process of comparing quotes easier as it will ensure the quotes will be based on the same specifications. Next, it’s time to compare. Review and compare each quote you receive, but don’t make your decision off price alone. View previous work from a builder – you might find a folio of work on their website – and speak

with past clients if possible. It’s all about communication When you’ve chosen who you’ll build with, ensure you get your contract in writing. The majority of building disputes occur when no written agreement exists or the agreement has been poorly documented, as this can lead to misunderstandings. Having a written contract in place between you and your builder clearly sets out what you both agree to and helps to prevent disputes throughout the building process. Building work valued over $3,300, must legally be covered by a written contract – though it’s a good idea to have a contract regardless of the value of work. When your renovation or new home is complete, there’s three items that need to be ticked off. First, you’ll receive notification of practical completion, then you’ll conduct a final inspection and finally, pay the builder all outstanding money for the work. Your decision to buy, build or renovate should be an enjoyable one. Just be sure to choose an experienced builder who you can trust to deliver the level of quality you’re after.
