“A credit to everyone involved...”

“Reflecting on resilence...”

I

n the most trying of years, Master Builders Victoria’s Excellence in Construction Awards for 2020 not only honours the highest achievers of our industry but also represents a time to reflect on the resilience of Master Builders across Victoria. Sadly, we couldn’t all gather at Crown Palladium to celebrate the year with our peers - these are awards with a difference. For the first time they’ve been announced online, and I congratulate all who have been involved to innovate and make this possible, together with our members that have embraced this change. Despite the success of this approach, let’s hope we’re all together in person again in the near future. A Master Builder embodies quality in construction, and the projects nominated for this year’s awards are true representatives of that ideal. In the middle of such difficult times, it is worth reflecting on the skills that are on display every day in our industry. We should all be proud of this work and celebrate it. Congratulations to all individuals and companies who’ve been nominated for awards, your participation and enthusiasm to nominate and showcase makes this concept possible. The quality of nominations is worthy of many winners in each category, but of course there can only be one.

We formally congratulate Lendlease for being awarded the Commercial Master Builder of the Year for their Stage 2 Redevelopment of Melbourne Park’s Rod Laver Arena. The innovation required to refurbish this iconic precinct that contributes so much to the city, economically and culturally, is not only impressive workmanship, but also a gamechanger for Melbourne that will be enjoyed on a global stage. We also recognise Charlie Chisholm from Kane Constructions who has been awarded the Young Commercial Builder of the Year. At a young age Charlie already has an impressive resume of projects to his name, but it’s also his leadership abilities and willingness for innovation through technology that marks him as someone with a big future in our industry. On behalf of Master Builders Victoria and our members, I congratulate all winners and nominees. I also thank every single judge that donates their time for this task to make our Awards possible. Finally, our Awards would not be possible without the generous contribution of our sponsors, we are grateful for your support during these turbulent times. Thank you all for your ongoing support of Master Builders Victoria.

Mark Little President, Master Builders Victoria

L

ast year was a year we’ll never forget, and while that’s primarily for the worst of reasons, the work of our members continued to be of the highest quality with so many outstanding construction projects created over the past twelve months. That the majority of the building and construction industry remained safe and open through the range of lockdowns, albeit in a reduced form for some time, is a credit to everyone involved. Our whole industry not only took on new advice, protocols and ways to work, our members embraced them and did not allow it to affect the quality of work that Master Builders are renowned for. I echo our President’s sentiments in commending all the work that has been showcased through the Awards. This year, the Excellence in Construction Awards are quite different, and it’s important to give some background on how we adapted to ensure we could present this COVIDSafe version of our Awards. Due to the restrictions throughout 2020, the Regional Building Awards were not able to proceed, so instead the choice was given to regional members to transfer their submission into the statewide Excellence in Construction Awards, or transfer into the 2021 Regional Building Awards. The nominations and winners from regional areas that are featured in this magazine

refer to those that took up the former. For the first time, judging was completed online and in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority’s Remote Video Inspection Guidelines, with the judging occurring later in the year than usual. This has contributed to the Excellence in Construction Awards being announced online in January and February 2021, rather than the traditional August slot. While the winners will be recognised online, we hope that soon we’ll all be able to get together so that we can honour our peers and meet with friends and colleagues in person from around Victoria. Nevertheless, this does not take anything away from the winners and nominees of 2020. I take this opportunity to congratulate all of those winners and nominees, together with all our wonderful members who kept our industry safe and open, and further enhanced the reputation of being a Master Builder in 2020. Both myself and the team at Master Builders Victoria looks forward to continuing to work with you to lead a futureready industry that builds a better world.

Peter Carmody’s experience in the building industry ranges from small projects, multi-storey buildings, fitout and refurbishment of existing buildings since beginning his career as a carpentry apprentice in 1957.

Robert Conti studied architecture at the University of Melbourne and is the principal of Conti Architects Pty Ltd.

Growing up in The Netherlands, Jan started his career as a writer/ journalist and public relations manager with Elsevier’s Publishing Company in Amsterdam. The attraction of wide open spaces saw him immigrate in 1983 to the Yukon, Canada, where after a short stint as a communications strategist for the government, he became involved in Canada’s super energy efficient building program labelled ‘R-2000’. Over the following 12 years Jan developed extensive knowledge in sustainable and energy efficient construction. First starting as a builder of R-2000 homes in Canada’s far North in the 1980s, he later progressed into a building consultant and building inspector. 1995 saw Jan immigrate to Australia. He soon discovered that the importance of energy efficiency was not widely recognised in Australian construction. To share this knowledge, he developed a number of demonstration projects: ‘The Healthy House”, ‘The Ecohome’ and ‘ The Economical House’, which were all built in Sunbury, Victoria. He received invitations to guest lecture at a number of universities on sustainable building, and developed training programs for energy efficient construction. As an environmental building consultant Jan advises on a wide range of issues to both industry and private clients. As a trainer for Master Builders in Victoria, and with 35 years experience, Jan combines his journalism background with his practical building skills. His focus is strongly on future industry developments with education being the key ingredient.

He worked on various sites with promotions to foreman, site supervision and contract administration. Peter was employed as a building estimator by a number of major building contractors and subcontractors and most recently employed by Hooker Cockram Projects as Chief Estimator for 28 years until his retirement in 2007. Since then Peter has been active in the domestic building market with developments of new units, new houses, refurbishments, renovations and extensions, also working with the Building & Facilities Committee at Holmesglen TAFE until this committee was discontinued in 2016.

The company commenced operations in 1987 following his return from working as an architect in London from 1984-1986. It has since established a body of awardwinning architectural projects incorporating architecture, interior design and landscaping in the commercial, institutional, residential and tourism sectors. Robert’s extensive travel and overseas work brings international experience and a historical perspective of architecture to his works.

Peter now enjoys retirement.

LENDLEASE Project: Website: Designer: Photographer:

Melbourne Park Redevelopment Stage 2 Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne www.lendlease.com Jonathon Gardiner Peter Clarke, Peter Clarke Photography

The Rod Laver Arena refurbishment is a key part of the Melbourne Park Redevelopment, a three-stage masterplan project built over ten years. The critical decision was made to keep the arena open while construction occurred. Constructing in a live environment meant minimal impact on events held in the precinct and continued economic benefits from events held at Melbourne Park. The refurbishment of this icon included a new patron entry, reorientation of the arena entry, securing the loading dock, parking for up to 24 semi-trailers, upgrading and enlarging artist dressing rooms, introducing a large-scale restaurant experience and roof-top bar, increasing the rigging capacity for shows from 30t to 100t with a removable rigging system, converting the arena from full seating to concert mode in four hours with the introduction of 1200 retractable seats. The project was not without its challenges, however Lendlease engaged with and supported the Stakeholder teams to achieve an amazing outcome sports and concert fans will appreciate for years to come. 18 MASTER BUILDERS VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2020

MABEN GROUP Project: Website: Designer: Photographer:

Albert Street, Richmond www.maben.com.au Bates Smart Lisbeth Grosmann Photography

The new seven-level office building development comprises a basement and six levels of premium office working space. Base building provisions were incorporated into the design to allow for leasing flexibility on each level and accommodate two separate office spaces if required, as well as a future provision for a café tenancy on the ground floor. The basement provides for on-site car parking and end-of-trip facilities such as bicycle storage and shower amenities. Late tenancy negotiations resulted in the addition of a separate pedestrian bridge, spanning a public laneway and linking an adjoining office building on the third level. It involved extensive negotiation with the Council to secure the air rights, fire engineering and the separate building permits required for the structure. The bridge has enabled a single tenant to expand, without the need for relocation, and occupy both office buildings.

All materials used were purposefully and thoughtfully selected and of the highest quality. The structure, roof and walls were erected prior to the slab being installed, and the warehouse flooring is a steel fibre designed slab, inclusive of armour edging to protect the slab and ensure its longevity. The slab was installed to strict tolerances. Roofing is made up of Zincalume Prodek which provides a premium finish and functionality. The warehouse roof also houses translucent panels spaced evenly throughout to suit the racking layout, that allow for natural light, reducing energy consumption. ADCO CONSTRUCTIONS (VIC) PTY LTD Project: Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, Traralgon Website: www.adcoconstruct.com.au Photographer: Chris Matterson The strategic approach to consultation, both with workers and surrounding community, was recognised as one of the key factors in minimising risk on the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre. The site posed many challenges given the location; surrounding public roads, residential properties, primary school and a neighbouring kindergarten. ADCO demonstrated a proactive approach to eliminate fall hazards through sequencing of works and upgrading of materials during the design stage to allow for more traffic able areas, and sourcing new construction techniques to reduce exposure to noise and hazardous manual handling. The scope of the project and the sequencing of the works meant multiple work fronts were open at any one time. Structural steel, roofing, wall cladding, concrete slabs, pool excavation and construction, installation of in ground services all happened in conjunction with each other. Ensuring open lines of communication between ADCO, its subcontractors, the client and affected stakeholders allowed works to proceed in a sequential fashion that eliminated the risk factors such as high risk works and construction traffic, with all completed within the project program. 36 MASTER BUILDERS VICTORIA EXCELLENCE IN CONSTRUCTION AWARDS 2020
