Q+A: SANTA’S CANDID CHAT A N E XC LU S I V E C H AT How are you going and how is Mrs Claus? It’s been very, very busy this year but we are going to get there all right and Mrs Claus sends her best as she always does. How are the reindeer going and do you have to feed Rudolph yourself? I do feed Rudolph. He’s a little bit shy since his nose problem but the elves look after the other reindeer and they’re going very well. They’re getting a bit older now of course but we may be getting some new ones but they’re all going very well. Do the elves make all the toys year round? Oh my goodness yes. We would never get through if they didn’t go all year ‘round, they’re very good and don’t want holidays. They love their work so much that we do go all year round. Do you get some holidays? Very few. I really think that coming down here and seeing all the girls and boys. That’s my holiday. It doesn’t feel like work to me. What’s the strangest present someone has asked for? Strange is probably not the right word but the most poignant question was, if I remember rightly, a little fellow came up and asked me if I could give him a mummy. I found out later that there was a problem in the family and he really wanted a mummy. I couldn’t promise him but I said that I would try.

A VERY BUSY MAN: Santa stopped by for a chat with the Daily Mercury, finding time in his busy schedule.
You’re always wearing red. Do you sometimes wish that you could wear another colour? No, red is Santa’s colour and I’m happy with it. Mrs Claus likes red as well, so no we wouldn’t like to change at all. If you’re on the naughty list what’s the best way to get off it? Just be good to mother. Just be good to mother all the time, I come to Artspace down in Mackay and I always ask the children if they have been good and they always promise me they have. And when I get back Mrs Claus always asks me and she’s very happy when I tell her that the children were all good. There has been an ad on television
with yourself saying you bought a Jeep. Did you buy a Jeep? I did not buy a Jeep. What would I do with the reindeer? No it wouldn’t work, it would not work for me, end of story. Was it bit of an advertising ploy? I think it was, it certainly wasn’t me, I wasn’t there at all, it must have been someone else. Why do you live in the North Pole and not the south? Well we’ve always lived up there, the reindeer have always been there and I couldn’t take them away from their homes. When you think perhaps where you

That’s easy. We know, it’s out in the air. If the children don’t let me know when they write their letters it’s OK, I will I find out. The elves know, they’re around everywhere and no one will get lost. Do you have your own staff Christmas party? Oh yes with the elves, we have a lovely party. Not on Christmas Day of course, we’re too busy on Christmas Eve but a couple of days after Christmas when things settle down we have a lovely party. Who would get the most rowdy at the party? Probably Mrs Claus because she’s had a very big year.
Mike, Helen & Staff would like to wish all their clients a Very Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year!

live you may live there for a number of reasons. We’ve been there for so long we couldn’t possibly move, we couldn’t bring the elves and all the workshops. I would probably need a Jeep to move. At the end of the day, do you enjoy a beer or a scotch? I look forward to a nice cold XXXX when I get back home. What about eggnog? Oh yes sometimes, Mrs Claus and I share an eggnog. How do you know where someone is when they are away for Christmas?

CHRISTMAS IN THE GARDENS F E ST I V E N I G H T AT B OTA N I C G A R D E N S A T R E AT FESTIVE melodies will be heard ringing from Meadowlands Amphitheatre when Christmas in the Gardens returns tonight. The free event attracted over 2500 people last year and is expected to be even more popular this year. Economic Development and Planning Committee deputy chair Cr Karen May said organisers were looking forward to holding the event at the amphitheatre for a second year. “The performers at last year’s Christmas in the Gardens made the most of a bigger stage and improved acoustics,” she said. “It’s a great location for these types of events because it has ample parking, modern toilet facilities and the space has been designed on a gradual incline so that everyone in the audience has a clear view of the stage. “Christmas in the Gardens will be sure to get families into the festive spirit with everyone’s
favourite Christmas songs. “Audiences will be excited to welcome back family-favourite Anette Worthington at this year’s event. “Also, taking to the stage will be students from Fame Talent School plus Libby Courtice and Stephen Donaldson joined by Queensland Ballet pianist Brett Sturdy.” Christmas in the Gardens will be held Friday night from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at the Meadowlands Amphitheatre. Entry to Meadowlands Amphitheatre is via Alexandra Street, off Lansdowne Road. Food stalls will be available or residents can bring their own snacks. Songbooks can be purchased at the event for a $1 donation and glow sticks and flameless candles will be also available for purchase. The Friends of the Gardens will be selling raffle tickets on the night.
Large crowds are again expected at this year’s Christmas in the Gardens event. PHOTO: MACKAY REGIONAL COUNCIL

SANTA RETURNS TO MORANBAH S A N TA C R I S I S AV E RT E D I N S M A L L T OW N DUE to a heavy outcry from Moranbah residents, Santa has taken up his chair in the Moranbah Fair for happy snaps with children this week. A spokeswoman from the centre said the Daily Mercury’s recent story about the festive troubles over a lack of the jolly red man “got the community working together to solve our Santa shortage”. “This is a fantastic result and demonstrates the power of the community,” she said. The spokeswoman said the outcome was largely due to the dedicated help from a shop employee, Robin Neyland. Mrs Neyland, as well as her husband, who is Santa’s dedicated helper, are volunteering

much of their time to capture many smiles and keep the annual tradition alive. “After seeing all the Facebook stuff I decided to go ahead and do it,” she said. “For as long as I’m in Moranbah I’m happy to be doing this, so that the kids in Moranbah are able to have Santa photos.” All funds from photo sales are going towards the Moranbah Netball Association to refurbish courts and purchase iPads for scoring instead of paper score sheets, as well as to 4RFM Community Radio Station for a new antenna. “I just hope that it brings peace to the community,” Mrs Neyland said. Santa photos at Moranbah Fair will be available on Sunday December 17 from 9am-2pm and Tuesday December 19 from 9am-2pm. And Santa Paws is running on the two Sundays from 1-2pm so all the furry friends can join in.
