CEMENT
Strength built on using the right cement for the job Concrete is one of the most commonly used building materials throughout Australia. Although the terms cement and concrete are often used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is basically a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and cement. Cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent of the concrete mix, by volume. Through hydration, the cement and a portion of water react and harden, binding the materials into a rock-like mass. But there are many different types of cement and all of them have different applications.
The most commonly used type of is General Purpose (GP) cement which is for general use in all types of building and construction, General Purpose Blended (GB) cement, or Builders cement, is also for general use in all types of building and construction, however early rates of strength gain may be lower than those of Type GP, and curing may be more critical for full strength development. Another alternative is High Early Strength (HE) cement, which is used where early strength is a critical requirement, such as for the early stripping of formwork, in very cold weather, in repairs to concrete structures. Low Heat (LH) cement is used where rise in concrete temperature must be limited to avoid thermal stress (such as in mass concrete construction or in

very hot weather), or where moderate resistance to chemicals is needed. Shrinkage Limited (SL) cement is designed to be used where limiting the drying shrinkage of concrete is necessary for crack control, such as road pavements and bridge structures and Sulfate Resistant (SR) cement is needed where high resistance to sulfates is required, such as in sulfate-bearing soils and groundwaters. There are also white, off-white and coloured powders available. Other specialty products include Mortar, Oil-well utilised in grouting gas, oil and other deep bore holes and wells; and High Alumina Cement, where high early strength and/or resistance to very high temperatures are required (such as refractory concrete and factory floors).

INSURANCE
Get the right coverage, the right advice and the right support When speaking with members throughout New South Wales, we still encounter builders who advise us that they arrange their insurance through another broker, or directly with an insurer, and often aren’t aware of the benefits of placing cover through MBA Insurance Services (MBAIS).
Within the building industry you have specialist trades – plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tilers and the list continues.
The differences in cover found in construction insurance are substantial, but not widely known within the general insurance industry.
While a capable tradesman might be able to cross over into another trade and do a reasonable job, would you bet your business on it being done right?
While most members are open to MBAIS reviewing their program and providing quotes, it’s when we get into the detail about what hasn’t been covered, including real-life claims examples, the benefits of using a specialist construction insurance broker are obvious. Unfortunately for some builders, they discover they have the wrong policy after they have an uninsured loss. In simple terms, the role of an insurance broker is to negotiate the best insurance contract for their client at the most competitive price. The insurance contract offers protection for your business and ultimately protects your livelihood and lifestyle. With construction insurance contracts having such a high degree of variation and complexity, its worth using a specialist construction insurance broker who deals exclusively in the contractor space.
The insurance industry is no different. Would you have an electrician tile a bathroom or a bricklayer plumb a kitchen?
Entrusting your business with a specialist construction insurance broker ensures you have the best possible coverage along with the expertise to handle claims and provide risk management advice, and of course deliver competitive premiums. With more than 60 staff nationally, at MBAIS we regularly see claims in areas only covered through having the right insurance policy. We have developed our own exclusive policy wording, and also have access to specialist construction insurers that provide flexibility with coverage solutions. With our size and buying power, we can typically provide you with broader cover at more competitive premiums. Once the appropriate level of cover has been arranged, in the event of a large or complex loss, we involve

Richard Grounds, MBAIS National Technical Manager. Richard is a qualified engineer, and is widely regarded as an industry expert within construction insurance for claims management. Having an in-house 30+ year veteran of construction insurance, who has worked on hundreds of complex large construction losses, and who knows construction inside and out, helps to ensure builders are better off with MBAIS. In addition to our own technical expertise, in the event of a large claim, we frequently utilise relevant MBA services like Legal, OH&S, and Industrial Relations, which helps MBAIS seamlessly deliver the best possible claims outcomes for our builders. Whilst service and relationships are important in business, when things go wrong, you need to be confident you are backed by the right insurance protection, risk management, and support, otherwise you are putting your business at risk. MBAIS can review your current program free of charge, and provide you with specific detail on any gaps in coverage for you to consider. As a specialist construction insurance brokerage, with genuine claims expertise and access to MBA services, builders are better off with MBAIS. We’ve got you covered.

Create raised floors on balconies, podiums and green roof tops Designed for creating raised floors in external applications, such as balconies, terraces and green roofs, Buzon’s Award Winning Pedestal system can be used with any type of concrete or stone paver, timber decking of all types and metal or fibreglass grid systems. A key benefit of this innovation is the patented slope correction device. This gives up to five percent fall compensation achieving a perfectly level floor finish, simultaneously allowing for positive water runoff at structural slab level.
Using the Buzon Pedestal replaces the use of sand and cement when laying pavers, therefore eliminating efflorescence and algae and reducing weight-bearing loads on the building structure. In addition the pedestal also improves thermal insulation and reduces sounds transmission.
For even more design flexibility, the system offers height adjustment from 17mm to 1070mm, millimetre by millimetre if required. This allows for unsightly services to be concealed under the floor while still offering access for maintenance of the waterproofing membrane and drainage systems.
In commercial urban environments where space is at an ever-higher premium, a building’s roof level is potentially a rich source of usable space. Buzon say their Pedestal System can be used to maximise a roof’s potential, both hiding all manner of services and protecting roof substrates from the elements, maximising integrity and longevity.
The pedestals are extremely strong as they are precision-engineered from high strength, UV resistant, recycled polypropylene and capable of supporting loads of more than 1000kg each. At roof level, this load is evenly spread by the wide base area of each unit, making them ideal for installation on any waterproofing membrane without causing damage, they can even be used directly over insulation material. The Buzon Pedestal System is also simple to install. Desired height is achieved by thread adjustment, which is lockable when reached and a range of interchangeable spacer tabs of 2mm, 3mm, 4.5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm, allow for precise gaps between pavers and provide positive drainage without any concern of ponding or flooding.
The Buzon Pedestal System is available throughout Australia. For more information contact: Pasco Construction Solutions Phone: 02 9817 4441 Email: buzon@pasco.net.au www.pasco.net.au

SOFTWARE
The software of choice for project management Nexvia is a project management system that was built out of necessity for the Australian and New Zealand construction software industry. There was a hole in the market, in which medium sized construction, shopfitting and specialty contracting companies were unable to find management software that fitted their unique project needs. From partnering with some of Australia’s best fitout, construction and joinery companies, the Nexvia platform was created. With a strong understanding that no two businesses are the same, Nexvia takes the time to understand the
processes and future goals of their clients and prospects. A high-level of training and consideration is taken to make sure businesses get the most out of the platform and aren’t left in the dark. Now used by industry leaders across Australia and New Zealand, Nexvia has become one of the fastest growing in the country with companies such as Unita, Woodland Shopfitting and Empower Construction using the platform to manage their projects from start to finish. It’s exciting to see such rapid growth and popularity from locally grown tech. For more information please visit www.nexvia.com.au.

SURFACE PROTECTION
Goop makes protection easy They say innovation is the key to success and when it comes to thinking outside the box and applying a creative approach to business, you would struggle to find two people who epitomise this model better than Shane and Kirstee Copley of Goop Guys.
“Our business is built on integrity; integrity in our product and our people. We also pride ourselves on a quality product that is safe for the environment as it is totally water based, non- toxic and nonhazardous.
an i Goop is ng a wide ra te peelable ai We also pride on like p ourselves on a quality op Guy product that is safe for Go s product
The idea for Goop Guys came about when Shane and Kirstee owned a builders’ cleaning company and saw firsthand the damage being done to surfaces during the construction phase, and the cost of replacing damaged or scratched surfaces. They also recognised the need for the protective coatings to be easy to apply and remove. The couple began to look for ways to help prevent this and it is through this search that Goop Guys was founded. Beginning operation in 2001, Goop Guys achieved immense success in the early years and as a result, franchising of the company began in 2006. Since its inception, Goop Guys has grown to be Australia’s number one temporary protective coating with 15 franchisees in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, whilst also exporting internationally to nine countries.
The Goop Guys started with protective films for external windows and soon expanded the product line to include windows, frames, specialised hard-coated glass, Perspex, UPVC joinery, behctops, cupbouards, bathtubs, stainless steel and floors. With a business built upon the key and unwavering principle of integrity, Goop Guys strives tirelessly to ensure customer satisfaction in every element of business. “We are a family owned business with products manufactured in Australia,” Kirstee said.

the environment as it is totally water based, non- toxic and nonhazardous.
“Couple that with not having to worry about the homeowners demanding scratched surfaces be replaced and it is a no-brainer – prevention is far cheaper than cure.” With a five-year plan to continue to expand their business both locally and internationally, Shane and Kirstee look forward to displaying their continued commitment to integrity through exceptional customer service and a first-class quality product for years to come.

TERMITE AND PEST CONTROL
Redefining termite barriers An Australian innovation, Greenzone Termite and Insect Repellent Barrier is a unique preconstruction termite management system which seeks to make pest control simple and efficient, not just for pest controllers, but for builders and other trades too. Greenzone combines a compressible foam substrate with bifenthrin (a commonly used termiticide) resulting in a single product that acts as both a termite barrier and an expansion joint foam. This eliminates the need to install two products, meaning a typically multistage process is reduced to a single step. Not only is it time and cost effective, it also reduces the need for chemical sprays on site, in-line with modifications to the Australia Standards AS3660. Where can Greenzone be installed? Greenzone is suitable for use on all
types of construction, residential, commercial or industrial, and is applied in three ways: around service penetrations; in expansion and contraction joints; and in concrete infill slab joints. The most common usage of the product includes the protection of infill garages, basement carparks, external perimeters (where pathways and driveways are present), home extensions, service penetrations and large construction projects where infill slabs and multiple slab pours are required. Benefits of Greenzone Greenzone protects against termite entry for up to 50 years. The fact that Greenzone is a self-adhesive product means in most building and construction applications it is a simple, one-step process and does not require any specialist tools. Since this termite barrier doubles as expansion foam, there is no need for
®
the concreter, plumber or any other trade to apply expansion foam to the areas that require termite protection. In November 2017, Greenzone Termite and Insect Repellent Barrier achieved CodeMark certification, which means the product is fully compliant with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) as a pre-construction termite management system. Who installs Greenzone? Greenzone needs to be installed by an accredited pest manager who holds a valid pest control license in their state. Builders interested in using Greenzone Termite and Insect Barrier are urged to chat to their local pest contractor, contact Greenzone directly at info@greenzonebarrier. com to be put in contact with an accredited Greenzone installer. For any further information on Greenzone, visit www.greenzonebarrier.com.

WATERPROOFING
Colormaker is the place for waterproofing protection When planning any construction project waterproofing should be a primary consideration. According to waterproofing expert Bill Straw “waterproofing continues to be the number one source of defects for builders in NSW.” It is important that the correct product is specified for the appropriate area. Proper preparation and application is essential to ensure that the waterproofing system is successful. If in doubt the manufacturer should be contacted for guidance on product application. ACRYLMERIC® System is a complete range of premium waterproof coatings suitable for many construction applications. The ACRYLMERIC System comprises a suite of primers, membranes and top coats for internal or external waterproofing projects. ACRYLMERIC® WeatherTuff is an elastomeric wall coating (EWC) suitable for external application. WeatherTuff was first developed in the 1970s and has been used to paint and protect a number of iconic buildings in Australia and overseas including what is now the Bayer Building at North Sydney, Shipmates at Narrabeen and the Geylang
Telephone Exchange in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. WeatherTuff was one of the very first internally plasticised EWCs to enter the market and has been used by professional waterproofing contractors for over 45 years. Recent developments include availability of 22 factory made COLORBOND® colours in a fashionable matt finish. ACRYLMERIC® Sportscote PFR is another elastomeric waterproof coating which is suitable for external trafficable areas such as roof tops, decks, balconies and verandahs. In comparison to WeatherTuff, ACRYLMERIC Sportscote PFR is based on a harder acrylic copolymer blend with polyolefin fibre reinforcement. High profile installations using the product include the St Leger stand at Moonee Valley Racecourse, the concourse area at Sandown Racecourse and the roof top car park at City Ford in Melbourne, routinely subject to multiple vehicle movements every day. ACRYLMERIC® Water Based (WB) Epoxy Primer Membrane is one the newest and most exciting additions to the ACRYLMERIC range. Originally designed purely as a moisture tolerant primer, this product has

exceptional scope. ACRYLMERIC WB Epoxy Primer Membrane is suitable for use on green concrete, eliminating the need to wait to cure, etch, neutralise and dry. Water Based Epoxy Primer can be used as a concrete curing membrane. Resistant to both positive and negative hydrostatic pressure, WB Epoxy Primer is ideal for lining both inside and outside of the building envelope. The ACRYLMERIC® System comprises waterproofing products suitable for application in areas such as bathrooms, laundries, kitchens, decks, balconies, retaining walls, exterior walls, roofing, guttering, fibro, basements, tunnels, underground carparks and other problem moisture areas. The ACRYLMERIC System is manufactured by COLORMAKER INDUSTRIES, a boutique coatings manufacturer based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Established in 1958, COLORMAKER is perhaps best known for LUXAPOOL® swimming pool paints, which has been Australia’s leading epoxy pool paint for the last 10-15 years. The company has a strong focus on R&D and sustainability with an impressive range of specialty products.
More than 45 years delivering weather protection in the extremes of the Australian climate

WROUGHT IRON
Elevate design with wrought iron Wrought iron is typically used for decorative, architectural applications such as fencing or railings however people often wrongly assume that cast iron and wrought iron are interchangeable terms for early iron work. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica the fundamental distinction between cast iron and wrought iron is in how they are produced. Wrought iron is iron that has been heated and then worked with tools.
Cast iron is iron that has been melted, poured into a mold, and allowed to solidify. The differences can be found in the names: wrought is a past participle of work (“worked iron”), and cast describes anything formed by the casting process. The different methods of production create metals with varying strengths and weaknesses, which is why you rarely see a cast iron fence or a wrought iron frying pan. Wrought iron has practical beginnings, being used for tools and weapons.
In the 19th century wrought iron began to appear in building construction, where its strength in tension (resistance to pulling apart) made it superior to cast iron for horizontal beams. The use of wrought iron in the 20th century has been principally decorative due to advances in steel production. Wrought-iron railings, doors, balconies, grilles, and other exterior fittings have been handcrafted since early times; the European Middle Ages were especially rich in handcrafted wrought-iron work.
Let the Wonder of Wrought Iron Transform Your Home Traditional Wrought Iron balustrades, gates, doors, grills and fences ~ your own design or ours. Private customers and builders both welcome.
