2019 WEDDING GUIDE
MAKE IT OFFICIAL Why choosing the right celebrant is so important PHOTO: Mazzer Photographics
SO you’ve found “the one” to marry, but have you found “the one” to conduct the ceremony? Australian couples can participate in either a traditional, religious ceremony, conducted by a minister of religion, or, a civil ceremony, officiated by an authorised celebrant, state registrar or by other persons authorised by the Attorney General. According to the Australian Government, under Australian law, only an authorised celebrant can legally solemnise marriages within Australia. Who you choose to officiate your ceremony can influence your choice in venue. There are three choices for the venue: ■ A church or other place of worship ■ A civil ceremony held in a location of your choice ■ A registry office For those choosing a religious ceremony, a minister who honours your specific religion is imperative. On the other hand, civil ceremonies allow couples to choose their own location, such as a garden or beach. A list of all authorised
Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrants can be found via the Attorney-General’s Department website. When searching for a celebrant, make sure they are someone who understands what you want, and ensure you are clear about all features of the ceremony venues – as each celebrant has their own style.
On the day of the wedding, the civil celebrant will give guidance on the order of service, vows, speakers etc. They will also guide you through the necessary legal requirements to officiate a marriage, including the notice of intended marriage which must be given to the celebrant at least one month (but no more than six months) before the marriage. CHOOSING A CELEBRANT ■ Ask around. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to find a celebrant. ■ Are they warm and
engaging? ■ Are they responsive and timely? ■ Do you feel a connection with him/her? ■ Are you able to have a laugh and engage comfortably? ■ What are their fees? ■ Are they easy to communicate with? ■ Do you like them?

2019 WEDDING GUIDE
LET’S TALK LEGAL The legal ‘to do’ before saying ‘I do’ IN order to be deemed “legally married”, there are a number of legal processes that need to be followed in Australia. From December 9, 2017, the Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Act 2017 commenced which provides for marriage equality in Australia, with the right to marry in Australia no longer determined by sex or gender. For any couple wishing to wed, a completed Notice of Intended Marriage form must be given the celebrant at least one month before the wedding. Your celebrant should be able to help you complete the form. On the day of your wedding, three marriage certificates must be signed, each by you, your celebrant and two witnesses. You will be given one certificate as a record of your marriage. Within 14 days, the celebrant must provide your marriage paperwork to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state or territory in which the marriage took place, as stated on the Attorney-General’s Department website.
GUIDELINES FOR LEGAL MARRIAGE: ■ Not be married to someone else ■ Not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister ■ Be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where one party is aged between 16 and 18 years ■ Understand what marriage means and freely consent to marrying ■ Use specific words during the ceremony ■ Give written notice of their intention to marry to their authorised celebrant, within the required time frame.

THEMED WEDDINGS Personalise your dream day and embrace a creative themed wedding ART-DECO THINK Great-Gatsby style lavishness. This timeless style includes plenty of ornate gold and sparkles, with geometric shapes and sharp lines. If glitz and jazz-age glam are your cup of tea, then having a roaring art deco themed wedding will be your kind of style. BOHEMIAN A POPULAR theme amongst Northern Rivers’ couples, this cool and carefree theme exudes beauty. Boho brides are encouraged to keep their venue decorations simplistic, with features like oriental rugs lining the aisle, decorative pillows for guests to keep comfortable and of course, plenty of lace. RUSTIC DOES the thought of string lights, jam jars, twine, lace and anything made of wood give you butterflies? This homely theme is perfect for fans of DIY with a more rural venue (such as an old barn or farmhouse) giving major rustic vibes. GARDEN PARTY FOR those looking for a more intimate, casual ceremony an outdoor garden party-themed wedding is a must. Perfect for those looking to wed in the spring or summer.

AIM FOR ECO WEDDING Reduce your environmental footprint as you walk down the aisle VENUE OUTDOOR ceremonies not only drastically cut energy consumption but can also provide a beautiful location for your ceremony. The Northern Rivers is home to some of the most beautiful locations for outdoor weddings. Think gardens, beaches, backyards and parks – these locations are perfect for large or intimate ceremonies; just be sure to have a back-up plan if the weather is poor. FOOD AIM for locally-sourced, organic products where you can on your menu. Others may choose to go for a more vegetarian/vegan style menu. Whatever your vision, investing in a caterer who specialises in these foods could be an idea – even better if they come equipped with a compost bin for food scraps! DECOR FROM speaking to your local florist about home-grown or local varieties to purchasing second-hand materials to decorate your special day, there’s no harm in keeping the environment in mind as you plan your wedding. Keep in mind, the decorations you choose can play a big role in setting the tone
on the day, so why not integrate some eco-friendly décor into your big day. THE BRIDE ALL eyes will be on you and your dress come your special day, however have you considered possibly borrowing one from a family member or friend? After all, what better way to tick the ‘something borrowed’ box than wearing a dress that has also been a part of someone else’s magical day? Choosing to use organic skincare and
cruelty-free make-up will also see you glowing (naturally) from the inside out. WEDDING GIFTS KEEP the eco-friendly good vibes green and going when you put together your wedding registry. From organic-cotton sheets to recycled glassware, your list is the perfect place to instil your environmental values. Alternatively, asking guests to donate to charity instead of buying a gift is also a great option.

YOUR BIG-DAY BUDGET Five tips and tricks that will save money, time and stress ACCORDING to MoneySmart, the average Australian wedding costs $36,200. The following tips can help you in setting your budget. INVEST IN A WEDDING PLANNER IF you want to save money, you must spend money. Wedding planners are experts at what they do and can often draw on years of experience working with brides, budgets and their extensive professional networks. All these things can help with your big-day budget. NEWLY-WEBS THE cost of paper, printing and postage of invitations can certainly add up – so take things online. Creating a website for your wedding (for a small cost) is a great way to bring others together for your special day. From details of times and location to links to the photo gallery following the wedding, many couples are choosing this more modern approach. SOMEONE NEW A GOOD photographer isn’t always someone well known. Keep an eye out for someone who doesn’t charge the big bucks and is relatively unknown. Everyone has their big break eventually and if you find someone before theirs, you could save some serious dollars. BYO BUY your own booze. If your venue allows you to bring your own, do it, and return anything your guests don’t drink. BORROW, DON’T BUY TO save money on accessories for your big day, borrow from family and friends instead. Did someone say ‘something borrowed’?

CATERING
Everything you need to consider before booking your caterers THE process of booking a caterer for your wedding should be a relatively straight forward process. DELICIOUS DISCUSSIONS IT is suggested you organise a time with your caterer to talk through what it is you’re looking for. This could be over the phone or at your home depending on locations. From here, a proposal will be created with menus and costs for your wedding. PART AND PARCEL A LOT of venues offer catering on site
although it’s up to you whether you hire your own caterer. Some venues also offer kitchen facilities that can be used on the day if you choose to self-cater. IMPORTANT QUESTIONS CHECK your caterer’s availability to start with and ask what kind of events they have catered for before. Alternatively, call your venue and see if they can recommend anyone. You can also ask your caterer if they specialise in any cuisines. An indication of costs upfront will save both of your time as
you will know if the catering is within your budget. CHOICES THIS depends on the caterer and the number of guests you have. As a general rule of thumb, unless guests have particular dietary requirements there is no choice for wedding menus. A lot of couples choose to have dishes served in an alternate pattern around the table so guests can share or swap if they wish. FULL SERVICE MOST of the time, caterers will provide a full service including staffing and equipment hire as they will know what they need and how many staff they need to execute their menus. Generally, one waiter looks after every 10 guests for a sit down dinner. PHOTO: Mazzer Photographics

A ROYAL RECEPTION WHEN searching for the perfect place to hold your reception, pay attention to the following and you’ll have a wedding night not to forget. ROOM TO DANCE AN empty room is one thing – fill it with tables, chairs and a bunch of people and it’s another. When looking at reception venues, keep in mind the number of guests you intend on having there. Then consider what the space will look like with everything else. PRIVATE PARTY THE importance of privacy depends on the couple. When booking your reception, keep in mind that others may be sharing the same space. If this is a concern, try to schedule your reception for when there won’t be another event happening in the same area e.g. at a hotel. Alternately, visit the site on a dual-party night to see if noise will be an issue having two parties within the same area. Or, you could choose to hold the reception at a more private location that may allow you to hire the space for guests only. THE RIGHT LIGHT A FEATURE that can often be missed, the lighting set-up for your reception venue can play a really important role in the mood and atmosphere of your event. Couples are encouraged to visit their reception venue prior
to their event at the same time they plan on hosting their reception. That way, you can plan accordingly and make any changes before the big day/night. PARKING PLANNING IF GUESTS are expected to make their own way to the reception venue, ensure they have space for parking. If this may be a problem, possibly consider a shuttle bus or vans to take wedding guests from the ceremony to
reception venue. BACKUP PLAN AN OUTDOOR reception can be a beautiful way to celebrate your special day, although you don’t want rain to be putting a dampener on celebrations. Prior to the event, look for solutions should Mother Nature choose to rain on your parade. A gazebo? The option to move the party indoors? There is no harm in having a Plan B.

MUSIC, LOVE & LAUGHS Keep guests entertained all night long with these suggestions FROM live bands to DJs, jukeboxes to wedding singers, each wedding is unique when it comes to the music played on the special day. When choosing your music, there are a few things to keep in mind such as: ■ Is there space for a live band? Will you have to hire any electrical equipment? ■ What songs will you include on your playlist for the DJ? ■ Does the location have an impact on the acoustics? Is there an echo? Ultimately, there are no rules when it comes to what music you choose to play on the big day. FUN AND GAMES WITH time for guests to kill between the ceremony, photographs and reception, ensure the good vibes keep going and the conversations start flowing with a bit of fun ‘n’ games. CREATING CONVERSATIONS WHO said colouring in was child’s play? White paper tablecloths accompanied by some pencils and crayons will keep guests busy and entertained. The hand-drawn
scribbles and messages also make for a great keepsake … provided not much is spilled on them. WHAT IN THE WORD GIVING guests at each table a “fill-in-the-blank” style story book on the newlyweds is a way to keep things interesting. For example, “John and Mary met at ….. on a …..” At the end of the event, each table can read out their stories – however wild and ■ The Way You Look Tonight – wacky they may be. Frank Sinatra SNAP THAT ■ Can’t Help Falling In Love – CREATE a geotag for Elvis Presley SnapChat and let your friends ■ Everything – Michael Buble snap away. Come tomorrow, ■ Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m you will be able to see all the Yours) – Stevie Wonder shenanigans from the evening in ■ At Last – Etta James the one place. ■ My Girl – The Temptations GROUP GAMES ■ All of Me – John Legend DID someone say karaoke? Or maybe ■ Perfect – Ed Sheeran a game of beer pong? Whatever your style, whatever your budget, there’s nothing like bringing friends together for some fun.

PICTURE PERFECT THEY say a picture is worth a thousand words... especially when they capture your special day. Wedding photographs should be a unique reflection of your wedding day, so it’s important to choose the right photographer. Not all photographers photograph the same, so be mindful of what style you want and whether or not it can be achieved by the photographer you choose to hire. When you have decided on your style, approach more than one photographer for a quote and ask to meet in person before booking anything in. It is important you feel comfortable around your photographer and that they are going to make you feel relaxed on the day. Be sure to ask what other costs might be incurred outside of your desired package (e.g. reprints and enlargements). Check thoroughly through contracts as it should contain everything previously discussed with the photographer, as well as cancellation policies, costs and payment terms. Organising a practice shoot, even if it’s just for engagement photos, could also be a good idea. For those who also wish to video their wedding, have a chat to your photographer about hiring a videographer, or they themselves may provide a video service.

LET’S GO GIRLS & GUYS Some handy tips when it comes to choosing your bridal party CHOOSING your bridal party can be one of the more stressful components leading up to your big day. There is always a lot of confusion as to who should and shouldn’t be included, but ultimately it’s up to the wedding couple as to who they want in their bridal party. Before choosing your bridal party, consider the following: WHAT DOES YOUR FIANCE WANT? This isn’t just your big day – it’s theirs too. Do they want a big bridal party? Or do they just want a couple of you up at the altar? ARE THEY ATTENDANT MATERIAL So this may sound a little harsh, but the bridal party have a different role to the other guests attending your big day. THE DRESS How to make that all-important decision, which dress is right for you? ARE you planning to buy your wedding dress off the rack, or do you plan to have it tailor made? Are you thinking of going with a traditional white or something more modern – like a nude? Whatever style you plan on going with, the most important thing is the fit. Take note of the tailors, seamstresses and dress shops in this guide who would love to help you find your dream dress. When looking for your dress, keep in mind you’ll need to feel comfortable sitting, eating, dancing and drinking in it – especially with those involving corsetry and other restrictive (yet flattering) elements. One thing is certain; every body type is different and while you may like a certain style, it may not necessarily suit your body – so be sure to try on a variety of styles. MERMAID: This style is perfect for showing off an hourglass shape. It hugs the bust, waist and hips flaring out from the knee providing more definition. A-LINE: Featuring a fitted bodice that gently flares down to the ground creating a classic and unbroken silhouette, this style is ideal for pear shaped women, and those with broad shoulders as it balances out the shoulders and hips.
SHEATH: With a long, slim silhouette that follows the body’s natural line without flaring out, a sheath or column style wedding dress is best for slender figures such as those with a straight or athletic figure. BALL GOWN: This classic and timeless style incorporates a fitted bodice and a full skirt. Flattering on all body types, ball gowns show off the bust, arms and shoulders while concealing the waist and hips. HALTER NECK: For brides lucky enough not to worry about a bra, a halter neck with a low-cut back is always an elegant and classy option.
BATEAU: Perfect for older brides, this elegant option has a wide-neck shape that follows the collarbone to the edge of the shoulders.

WELL SUITED How to find the perfect fit for your groom and groomsmen ALL eyes won’t just be on the bride come your special day. The groom’s attire is also important and finding the perfect fit is a must. More versatile than a wedding dress, a suit can be worn again for other occasions, so it is important to get the right one the first time around. A traditional, timeless look would be your typical black-tie suit. If paired with a bow tie and white collared shirt, the groom will instantly have an elegant, classy look about him. Black, navy blue and charcoal are all colours for suits that can be used time and time again. What the groom wears also depends on location. For a beach wedding, the groom and his groomsmen may opt for a more relaxed look – a smart-yet-casual white shirt with cotton pants for example. Groomsmen often wear matching suits while the groom may wear something similar with say, a matching tie. 2019 TREND PREDICTIONS: ■ The three-piece suit. Very practical as the jacket can be removed and shirt sleeves rolled up come party time. Three-piece suits should be top of your 2019 groom suit trend list. ■ Something bold and bright. Think vibrant suits in hues such as purple and ink blue (both on trend). This will certainly wow the crowd. ■ Slim fit is in. From straight or tapered trouser legs replicated from the waste up with a slim jacket, to emphasise the groom’s chest and shoulders. PHOTO: Mazzer Photographics

2019 WEDDING GUIDE
RINGS: STYLE TO SUIT CLOSE your eyes and picture your dream ring. Is it made of diamonds or gemstones? Platinum or gold? Are you thinking of a simple band or one with embellishments? Would you like your wedding band and engagement ring to be made of the same metal? How about your partner – are you wanting your rings to match? It’s important to really think through these kinds of questions before you go looking. You’ll be wearing these rings 24/7, so it is important that they interlock with one another. Also think of a budget. Going to your jeweller with a budget in mind can help with making the decision process a lot easier. Talk to your jeweller about finding rings that work with one another and give yourself plenty of time before the wedding to find ‘the one’ you want. The key to finding a ring both partners love is choosing designs that reflect your individual styles. Keep in mind that you are going to be wearing these rings every day for the rest of your lives, so the goal is to choose the right ring the first time around.

BRIDAL BEAUTY: SHOES ALTHOUGH they may be one of the last things you organise, wedding shoes can be a very important factor in your bridal look. The style of your shoes can be influenced by things such as the style and length or your dress, as well as your own height and build. Not to forget, the location of your wedding will also play a part in your decision. If your feet are visible when you wear your wedding dress, then it is all the more important to find shoes ■ Wear your shoes in before your that work well with your wedding day so you can practice outfit. For those wearing a dress where you can’t see your shoes, you can opt for a pair that are maybe more practical and comfortable. A safe choice would be to pick a style and colour that won’t appear too out of place if you flash your feet at some point – such as a nude, tan, ivory, white or even pastel shade of pink, lavender and baby blue.

BRIDAL BEAUTY: ACCESSORIES From flower crowns to pretty pearls – find your missing pieces CHOOSING the perfect accessories for your wedding day look can be a lot of work. Will you wear jewellery or let your ring speak for itself? Will you go for a traditional veil or a more modern option, such as a flower crown or statement clip? With so many options and beautiful styles to choose from, here are some ideas for bridal accessories that are set to take off in 2019. NATURAL BEAUTY: NATURE-INSPIRED looks such as hand-wired hair vines (that can be worn as headbands or halos) are a gorgeous, natural alternative to other headpieces. Flower crowns are also still proving popular among Northern Rivers brides – think native flowers for some Australiana drama.
PEARLS A TREND that’s making a huge comeback, pearls can look beautiful in everything from headpieces to veils and even the wedding gown itself. If you’re not a huge fan of sparkles or diamantes, these are a sophisticated way to incorporate glamour. ALL THINGS SHINY FORGET rose gold, silver and chrome are making a comeback. Look for ways to incorporate these hues into your make-up and jewellery. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Three-dimensional floral embellishments are a big trend for 2019. Add floral appliques to extra-long tulle veils to create a look that’ll take everyone’s breath away.

BRIDAL BEAUTY: HAIR AND MAKE-UP Look picture perfect on your special day with a few tips and tricks IT’S ALL IN THE HAIR
THAT trendy up-do you have been looking at in the “best wedding hair of 2018” gallery may have looked great on the model, but when looking at your wedding photos 20 years from now, will it still be as trendy? The safest option when it comes to choosing what hair to wear on your special day should be based on the shape of your face.
ROUND: Create texture and bounce to help slim the face, such as having the hair down in a loose style or trying a side swept long fringe. Don’t go for a super sleek look as this will make the face appear rounder. SQUARE: Adding softness is key to the perfect look. Texture such as waves and curls add femininity and softness with a side part helping to break up the width of the face. HEART: The most versatile of face shapes according the hairstylists, heart-shaped faces look best with having loose hair around the face, particularly around the jawline which will accentuate the cheekbones. DIAMOND: Similar to a square-shaped face, styles that create softness are best for a diamond-shaped face. Try to create height at the sides to accentuate the cheekbones and balance out the jawline.
MAKE-UP DOS AND DON’TS CLEAN SKIN IS KEY AT LEAST three months before the wedding, start a thorough skincare regime. Not only will you be glowing without make-up, but when wearing make-up on your special day it will last much longer. TRIAL AND ERROR BOOK in a make-up trial no more than five weeks before your wedding. For those brides who are planning on wearing fake tan, have a test tan done at the same time as your make-up trial so your foundation shade matches the rest of your body. COLOUR CONSIDERATION MOST brides choose to wear white on their big day so be sure your make-up doesn’t Page 28.
wash you out. Ensure skin looks even and smooth and keep colour exclusive to your lips and cheeks. LUSCIOUS LASHES TO REALLY make your eyes pop opt for individual false lashes rather than a strip. By using different lengths a natural, fluttery look can be created by your make-up artist. BACK TO THE BASICS SOME things are best not to be messed with. Although each bride’s individual look is unique to them, it’s best to keep skin looking natural and eyebrows softly groomed. If these basic elements are done just right, the rest of your make-up will look perfect. BYO BEAUTY GET your bridesmaid to carry a powder, lipstick, concealer and mascara in her bag for you to use to touch up throughout the day. LIGHTEN UP OPT for a lipstick shade that is one or two tones brighter than what you would normally wear. Think pinks, roses or plums. FACE THE FACTS YOUR make-up should be extending your base down your neck and over your shoulders (if necessary). This will ensure your face isn’t a different colour or texture to your body. STRESS LESS BE SURE to allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for your make-up application to avoid rushing.
PHOTOS: Mazzer Photographics
OVAL: To break the length of the face up, opt for a style that creates width, such as an up style. Don’t have your hair tied tight at the sides as this will only accentuate the length of the face.
2019 WEDDING GUIDE
FANCY FLOWERS ADD colour to your special day with some beautiful blooms. Try to decide early on how big of a role you want your flowers to play in your wedding. If you’re going for a minimalistic day, you may only need flowers for you and your bridesmaids. For those looking for something a little more extravagant, you may also need to work out flower arrangements in the styling of your wedding/reception venues. Having an idea in mind as to what you want will help immensely. Think of the theme of your wedding and work flower arrangements around that.
A FEW QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF ABOUT YOUR BOUQUET:
■ Are your flowers in bloom and going to last the day? ■ Will it go with your dress? ■ Will it be heavy? ■ How will you carry your floral bouquet? ■ Will it be easy to handle and pass to your bridesmaids? ■ Will it hide detail on your dress? ■ Will the pollen of certain flowers rub off on your dress? FAIRYTALE ARRIVAL VINTAGE, classic or casual? How do you see yourself arriving at your wedding? From matching vehicles to vintage and classic cars, horse-drawn carriages to stretch limousines and sports cars, the options really are endless. Traditionally, the groom arrives first sharing a ride with the groomsmen. The bridesmaids and bride’s mother would share a car with the bride and her father sharing another. WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN deciding on your wedding transport, there are a few journeys that you need to consider such as: ■ Your home or hotel to the ceremony ■ The ceremony to the reception ■ The reception’s grand exit For those wanting to stick to their budget, utilising friend’s and family’s vehicles to transport everyone is also an option.
Hot tip
The bridal party (along with photographers) may need transport from the ceremony to the reception.

BLISS IN EVERY BITE Wedding cake tips to keep in mind for the sweetest of couples THE centrepiece of the reception, your wedding cake, is a very important feature on your special day. DON’T GUESS YOUR GUEST LIST COUPLES need to finalise their guest list before ordering their cake. Generally, three tiers will serve between 50 and 100 guests, while five layers will feed 200 guests and more.
should stay away from things that melt, such as whipped cream and meringue. On the other hand, fondant covered cakes don’t have to be refrigerated. THE CHERRY ON TOP A CLASSIC figurine is always a popular choice among couples, although anything that represents you as a duo will look spectacular. Think about a clay model of your pet, or your favourite movie characters as mini figurines, even a monogrammed acrylic pedestal – there are so many options to choose from so why not pick one that defines you.
PRICED BY THE SLICE WITH most wedding cakes priced by the slice, couples need to keep this in mind when delegating their budget. The costs of cakes vary, but generally slices can range from $1.50 to $15 per slice. Fondant icing also tends to be more expensive than butter cream, with obscure shapes, bright colours and finer detailing adding to the cost of the cake designer’s labour. A recent study showed the average cost couples spent on their wedding cake was $540.
TRY BEFORE YOU BUY CAKE tasting is a must. At tastings, you get a chance to sample the cakes, ask questions and look through portfolios. You also get to meet the bakers and see if they’re the right candidate to be making your cake.
TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION THE weather on your wedding day. Outdoor weddings in warmer weather mean you

OLD TRADITIONS AND MODERN TWISTS TWISTS ON OLD TRADITIONS CUT THE CAKE CUTTING A LOT of couples are now serving smaller cakes as part of a display or even as centrepieces for their table. Individual cupcakes (for example) are not only trendy, but are also often a cheaper alternative. PARTY WITH YOUR PETS FOR many, their pets are considered a part of the family with some choosing to include them in the celebrations. SAY GOODBYE TO TRADITIONAL EXIT TRADITIONALLY, the newlyweds are given a grand exit and sent off amid a shower of flower petals, confetti or rice. More recently, couples have been staying until the end of the night alongside their guests. SLIDESHOW OF HAPPY SNAPS ENTERTAIN guests with a slideshow of pictures of you and your partner. You can start with childhood photos and work your way up to your relationship.
WEDDING TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
symbolising that he will never allow her to go hungry.
DIFFERENT cultures have their own, quirky customs and when it comes to weddings, there are plenty. From smashing plates to multiple gown changes, cutting ties to pinning money, luck comes in all different forms of traditions.
PUERTO RICO HERE, a doll dressed as the bride is placed at the head of the table during the wedding reception, surrounded by charms and gifts. At the end of the reception, the guests receive these trinkets as a show of appreciation.
SWEDEN SWEDISH tradition has it that if the groom leaves the room for any reason, then the other men in the room are allowed to kiss the bride, and vice versa. POLAND THOUGHT to have originated in Poland, this bridal tradition sees the couple share a traditional dance, during which guests pin money to their clothing or place it in the bride’s purse. WALES IN Wales, it is common for a man to gift his new wife with a carved wooden spoon,
GREECE A GREEK bride may carry a lump of sugar with her on her wedding day, to ensure she has a sweet life. Alternatively, she may carry ivy as a symbol of endless love. Bags of sugar-coated almonds are served to the guests as wedding favours. ITALY IN Italian culture, ribbons symbolise the tying together of two lives, so a ribbon is tied across the front of the church door to symbolise the wedding bond.

TODAY’S THE DAY Tips to help you manage your stress levels on your big day NO MATTER how big or how small, planning a wedding is a stressful task. The most important thing is to not lose sight of why you are getting married in the first place. Here are some handy tips to help you enjoy your wedding day, minus the stress. BREATHE DEEPLY TAKE just five minutes to focus on your breathing. Sit up straight, eyes closed, with one hand on your belly. Slowly inhale through your nose, feeling your breath move from the abdomen, to the top of your head. Reverse the process as you exhale through your mouth. TUNE OUT RESEARCH shows that listening to soothing music can lower blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety. Gentle melodies, breathy harp music or natural sounds (such as rain/waves crashing) can do wonders to relax you. KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE CHANCES are, there will be some snags along the way. Embrace the fact that
PHOTO: Mazzer Photographics something will go wrong and try not to worry about the little details. In the long run, the fact that your napkins and tablecloth don’t match really won’t matter in the end.
SET ASIDE SOME ALONE TIME TAKE a moment to yourself after the ceremony to bask in newlywed bliss. Set aside at least five minutes to be alone together after the ceremony.
KEEP YOUR SENSE OF HUMOUR LAUGHTER helps to ease muscle tension. Rather than stressing out when something goes wrong, force yourself to try and laugh it off. Not only will it put everyone else at east, but you’ll probably feel better too.
SAVOUR THE MOMENT YOU are marrying your best friend and this is one of the happiest moments of your life. Go with the flow, and accept that minor chaos may ensue at even the most perfectly planned event. Take a breath and just enjoy.
