Welcome to the 2024 Master Builders NSW Regional Awards publication. This magazine highlights the incredible contribution the building and the construction industry makes to Regional NSW, something we should all be very proud of. The Regional Excellence in Building Awards not only recognise bricks and mortar, but also the profound influence the built environment exerts on the very fabric of our society.

Close to 1800 members and their guests celebrated the Awards at Gala Dinners held in Newcastle, Albury, Ballina, Ulladulla and Orange. Each award presentation celebrates the magnificent projects entered from their region. The major winners from each region are automatically entered into the NSW State Awards.

It is worth noting the building and construction sector engages and gives more opportunities to small businesses than any other industry in Australia. Our industry is the largest employer of full-time employees and trains more apprentices than any other industry.

In the year 2024, our industry once again demonstrated its remarkable expertise, delivering projects of exquisite quality and craftsmanship. Our diligent judges embarked on rigorous onsite inspections right across Regional NSW, assessing projects valued in excess of $1.2 billion. Each year the bar is raised on the quality of the projects delivered and this year was no exception. The projects entered in this year’s awards are resounding testament of the industry’s skill and professionalism and a true tribute to the unwavering dedication of our members.

Allow me to express my gratitude to our honorary judges who each year graciously volunteer their time and expertise. Their discerning evaluations and deliberations stand as a testament to their commitment to excellence, as they faced the arduous task of selecting the finest entries from a pool of outstanding entrants.

Judges

Geoff Douglass

Geoffrey has semi-retired from a career as a Building Surveyor and Accredited Certifier, employed by the City of Newcastle. He has complemented a lengthy career in local government by participating in a range of other activities that are relevant to his profession, including being a long serving judge for these awards. He has been a long-term member of an industry advisory panel for the Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) Degree at the University of Newcastle (Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment - School of Architecture and Built Environment). He served on State committees involved in the administration of a NSW Building Surveyors' accreditation scheme, before being appointed as a board member of the NSW Building Professionals Board, on which he served for over six years, from the inception of that board. He also served on the Building Professionals Board's Disciplinary Committee, during and subsequent to his time as a board member.

Paul Hickson

Paul is a licensed builder, a carpenter and joiner by trade, with a career in the building industry that spans over four decades. He has been a member of the Master Builders Association for over 30 years, serving on the Newcastle Master Builders Association Board of Directors for 16 years, holding the position of President from 2008-2010. Paul is also a former NSW MBA Hunter Division Committee member.

Paul recently retired from his building business which operated for over 30 years and specialised in Custom Built Homes, Renovations and Alterations & Additions. Throughout his career Paul has been recognised for Excellence in Building, receiving numerous local and national awards including MBA’s Newcastle Housing Builder of the Year in 2006. Paul also holds a Cert. IV in Training and Assessing and earlier in his career was a part time TAFE teacher at both Maitland and Newcastle TAFE. He trained a number of apprentices over his career and was a Foundation Host Employer of the NMBA Group Apprenticeship Scheme. He remains passionate about seeing young people learn and thrive in the building industry.

Matthew James Sainsbury

Matthew was principal of Suters Architects from 1982 until November 2010. During his career Matthew has been the Design Architect and senior member of the design team on many award-winning projects, including Queens Wharf, Newcastle Foreshore Redevelopment and the Building Services Corporation Building, University of Newcastle Campus. Matthew has served as Past Chairman and committee member; Newcastle Division of AIA, Past Councillor of NSW Chapter of AIA and University of Newcastle Campus. Matthew is now a registered Architect practicing as Matt Sainsbury Architect.

Matthew Haines

Matthew has been involved the building and construction industry for 33 years. He started he is own business “Hainesbuild” in 1997 which he is still actively involved in today. Matthew’s qualifications include a Certificate III in Carpentry, Clerk of Works/Cert IV Construction, Cert IV Training and Assessing and has completed study in the fields of Cert IV Front Line Management and Building Consultancy. Matthew has a long involvement with the Master Builders Association movement at local, state and National level, starting on the Newcastle Master Builders Association board of directors 14 years ago. Matthew is the immediate past President of the Newcastle Association, holding the title from 2016-2020, is the current President of the NSW MBA Hunter division and is also on the National Job and Skills committee for MBA Australia. Matthew is actively involved in apprentice training and holds a position on the Newcastle Master Builders Association group training board of directors. Matthew, along with leading building representative’s, developed and implemented the highly successful school based scholarship programme that runs in the Newcastle region and is gathering great interest nationally. Matthew has work on a large range of building projects, from heritage restoration through to large-scale residential alterations and additions. He has been involved in a number of commercial projects and environmental construction projects.

Growing up as the son of a builder and having spent many weekends on a building site earning some pocket money, it appears that building is in Greg’s blood. Having secured a carpentry apprenticeship after leaving school, Greg was well on his way to becoming a builder of excellence.

Kingston have given a new lease of life to these historical bricks removed from a previous building at St Joseph’s Primary School at East Maitland. These 100 year old convict bricks have become time capsule-like feature walls in their new office complex at Broadmeadow. A great way to preserve history and showcase these bricks for the future.

This re-purposed site at Broadmeadow has become Kingston’s. Kingston had taken a lot into consideration during the design and construction process to ensure minimal impact on the environment. Reclaimed Turpentine flooring as feature walls and convict-made historic bricks from a Kingston project bring a warm, historical feel to the new facility. The open plane 1st floor office area opens onto the large staff veranda overlooking the rear park. Kingston have presented a great build project.

The builder has delivered a great community facility right on Newcastle Harbour at Stockton. The facility is a purpose-built centre to house volunteer rescue personnel and equipment. The overall finish and design is worthy of mention and the judges feel that this category was an extremely difficult one to single out one winner.

This project was a real stand out for the judges. The design and finishes and the overall feel for the building was great.

From the polished concrete floors through to the expansive glazing. Although facing west the use of stream lined sun hoods blocks the harsh westerly sun in summer. A real feature is the off from concrete island bench tops and the use of beautiful warm Blackbutt timber throughout. Skelcon have delivered an outstanding project.

The impressive spiral staircase, visible through the three-storey high glass windows from the street is a work of art. A huge two-storey multi purpose meeting area is also a major feature of this very impressive build.

The build comprises of two towers, one of which is occupied by “The Little National Hotel”. The second tower is constructed of mass timber — Cross Laminated Timber and Glue Laminated Timber. The timber structure is the hero throughout the build being featured on each level in the open spaces. This has produced a 6-star Green Star rating. The building also includes 140Kw of solar with multiple EV charging stations.

This project evolved through Kingston Building needing to accommodate their growing staff and warehousing requirements. Part of the Home Hardware building was acquired as a bare shell. The renovation and extension work were extensive. The focus was on sustainable building components, and the inclusion of ergonomic and energy-efficiency. Key components included solar panels, grey water recycling, recycled brickwork and timber, to mention a few.

This new fit-out features a completely new interior within an existing shell to allow two businesses to coexist yet be delineated functionally. The layout ensures seamless flow for both staff and patients. The finishes to joinery, ceilings, floors and walls are of excellent standard throughout. The end result is a professional and sophisticated space flooded with natural light.

The transformation of a well known inner city hardware store is what Kingston have delivered on this project. Removal of decades of renovations back to the original shell, along with extensive changes to the rear of the building has resulted in a modern show room and office facility. Kingston reclaimed a large quantity of convict bricks from a recent project and have used these bricks as creative feature brick areas throughout the project.

The biggest challenge for this project was noise. The site was within and adjacent to the operational courthouse. All work was completed either out of hours or, done extremely quietly whilst court was sitting. Being an operational courthouse, extensive security provisions were installed into the building from x-ray screening to CCTV linked via an external AV network connecting the courtroom to external prison facilities.

In celebration of its 100th year of operation Belmont 16 ft Sailing Club undertook major works to renovate its existing premises. Pulling apart existing buildings that have been renovated and extended for many decades is always full of surprises. The club needed to remain operational during the works program. Through detailed scheduling and communication, Graph was able to achieve this with minimum disruption.

Clever combination of polished precast panel wall system adds visual interest to the presentation to the street. Excavation was limited to 1m. This resulted in an innovative underground water detention system where almost all the car park site is a 500mm deep tank.

The Mangrove Creek catchment was significantly affected by the 3 miles fire in 2019, destroying the picnic area. The new facility includes an interactive visitor education centre, amenities and water infrastructure upgrades, children’s play facility and revitalized picnic tables and shelters, all to satisfy BAL 40 to BAL Fire Zone construction. The rammed earth walls and detailed steel structures are visually unique in this remote location.

This project has achieved a 6-star Green Star energy rating. The use of timber throughout the build (approx 750 tonnes) equates to around 375 tonnes of captured carbon. This build process has meant a 50% reduction in embodied carbon when compared to a traditional build method. The building has 140kw of solar capacity on the two towers and EV charging for multiple vehicles.

St James Station Elizabeth Entrance Canopy Refurbishment

St James Station Entrance was constructed in the 1920s and is a State Heritage Listed building. The Entrance Canopy is treasured by the community, familiar to thousands of commuters. The site in Hyde Park required engagement with a multitude of authorities, with site access restrictions and public safety concerns. The special skills of Australian Heritage Restorations were tested with great results.

North was responsible for the original construction of this 472-seat heritage-listed performing arts theatre in 2008. The scope included compliance upgrades to cladding, internal and external renovations and structural strengthening. Innovative methodologies were developed for a proprietary beam strengthening system that avoided onsite welding — a fire risk. The work ensures it remains a lasting legacy.

Very well appointed units throughout the complex, with a high level of finish in all areas. A compact,difficult site with limited access on an extremely busy main road, Kingston Building had to deal with major site contamination prior to major works starting. The site was visited by the building commissioner during construction and was given a highly commended result after the site inspection and used this site as a bench mark for building sites during the visit to our region.

A pod style bathroom system built offsite reduced the number of onsite trades. This project was the first Class 2 building to be constructed under the new Design & Building Practitioners Act 2020, this required more stringent report of key elements of the build and to ensure all parties involved were aware of this new Act and its responsibilities. With the buildings footprint taking up the entire site, Kingston had very minimal site areas for storage and facilities during the construction process. A very well finished project under difficult challenges.

Large cast institu piers and a number of innovative construction techniques were utilised to excavate down and under the existing building to construct a new entry and exit ramp into the underground car parking at Wests City. All this Civil work being undertaken whilst ensuring minimal disruption to patrons and staff at the club. A highly complex project that the judges were very impressed with.

The 2024 Riverina Murray Excellence in Building Awards pay homage to a broad array of construction businesses within the towns of Wagga Wagga, Albury, South Albury, Wodonga, Lavington and Baranduda.

The Riverina Murray, also known as Australia’s food bowl, offers spectacular and unforgettable tasting experiences nestled within some of the country’s most beautiful agricultural towns, as well as some of Australia’s most extraordinary building locations.

Bruno Musitano

Bruno has been teaching Carpentry and Joinery apprentice builders at TAFENSW’s Griffith Campus for the past 30 years. He is a carpenter and builder by trade, having worked on many residential and commercial buildings all over the state as well as three years in a joinery workshop doing all facets of cabinet making, shopfitting and joinery. Bruno also owned a roof tiling company and is still involved for a local firm as its consultant. Bruno has participated as a judge on two occasions for the Master Builders Association, this year and prior to Covid, and is pleased to say it has been a great and rewarding experience to judge grand designs, great new innovations and skilled workmanship in the Riverina and North-Eastern Victorian regions.

Peter Gregurke

Peter Neil Gregurke is a seasoned professional with over 44 years of experience in the building and construction industry. He embarked on his career journey in 1980, starting as an apprentice in the commercial sector before transitioning into becoming a licensed builder. Throughout his career, Peter has not only operated his own successful building business but has also diversified his skill set by inspecting and providing building reports for insurance and real estate companies.

In addition to his hands-on experience, Peter has also shared his wealth of knowledge with future builders and tradespeople as a lecturer at TAFE, where he has imparted valuable insights gained from his extensive career. Over the years, Peter has continuously expanded his qualifications, including certifications in carpentry, building supervision, residential construction, waterproofing, and an Associate Diploma in Applied Science. His commitment to education led him to further his academic achievements with a Bachelor of Teaching degree and subsequently a Bachelor of Education degree.

Peter’s dedication to the industry, coupled with his passion for sharing knowledge and fostering the next generation of builders, underscores his reputation as a respected and accomplished professional in the field of building and construction.

Our winner this year, Emmeline Rocks, although still in the early days of her career, is having a huge impact and we’re excited to see what she does in the future. Graduating from Charles Sturt University with a Bachelor of Technology (Civil) and Master of Engineering (Civil), Emmeline started working in the industry during her degree gaining experience in Infrastructure, Education and Health projects and progressing quickly from a Cadet to a Project Manager. Careful demolition work preceded the build, refurbishing the existing building and adding an office complete with kitchen and bathroom amenities. Preserving the historic roofing profile, intricate masonry work, and painting required special attention. Meticulous material selection achieved a balance between modernity and timeless beauty.

The building features separate entrances for the public and school, and the careful zoning of areas for their respective uses. The library targets a 4-star Green Star equivalency rating through sustainable procurement practices, passive design strategies and the integration of solar panels.

The Stockholm Project, designed and constructed by Zauner Construction, is a stateof-the-art 47,000m2 cardboard packaging facility, with a main production space, waste conveyor trench and service rooms. Given its size, multiple site managers oversaw different aspects of the build. Engineering adjustments, including the use of fibrecrete, were made to manage costs. Stockholm represents a blend of cutting-edge technology and eco-conscious design.

The 2024 Northern Regions Excellence in Building Awards celebrated a broad array of remarkable architectural achievements. We are proud to honour outstanding construction businesses in the scenic towns from Fingal Head to Bukkulla, Byron Bay and KEW plus everywhere in between, nestled in the picturesque landscapes of New South Wales, Australia.

Northern Judges

Ian Anderson

Ian has more than 50 years of experience in the building and construction industry. He completed his indentured Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship in 1967. Ian then completed his Building Foreman & Clerk of Works Certificate, Building Certificate, and has worked in many facets of the construction industry.

In 1973, Ian became a full-time TAFE Teacher (Building & Construction) where he taught most subjects in the curriculum for both Trade and Post-Trade courses. He completed his Diploma of Teaching (Technical) in 1981.

After serving 30 years in the teaching profession, Ian retired and became an Accredited Building Consultant with the MBA. He continues to engage in that capacity today.

Ian has been a Judge for the MBA Northern Regions Excellence in Building Awards since 2013 and has been a member of Council Management since 2014..

Chris Bart

Christopher Bart, founder of Australian Heritage Restorations (AHR), AHR slate and Iron Roofing, AHR Plumbing and Forensic Building Consultants, specialising as an expert witness for disputes over $3M. 2019 Australian Heritage Restorations was sold where Chris remains as Technical Director part time.

SOUTHERN REGION

During the 20 years of involvement in the company AHR has won 19 awards from the Master Builders and National Trust combined, our proudest being to 2020 Safe Work award Commercial, and 2021 Commercial Builder of the year, at the MBA Newcastle excellence in Building awards. Additional 2021 won his category in the restoration and additions to his own private heritage listed home.

Prior the Chris opening AHR, he had a diverse range of positions, Building custom kitchens, the youngest Factory manager at Broad Way Interiors, Foreman on the restoration of the Queen Victoria Building Sydney, He was the main office fit out company in North Sydney having 80% of the market, to becoming the Senior Estimator and Project Manager for a well known Mid North Coast Building company which specialise in Government infrastructure, prior to opening up AHR.

Chris feels very proud to be a MBA member as they have assisted Chris for the last 20 years, Chris wishes the thank the MBA by continuing judging projects for the Northern Rivers.

The award this year goes to an amazing craftsman Martin Johnston, nominated by Nicholas Lenders: Skyline Projects.

Skyline Projects engaged Martin during their flagship project of Lo Scoglio at Coopers Shoot.

Martin’s level of craftsmanship is second to none and was a pivotal part of delivering this project to the standards we expect and want in our builds.

Using 200-year-old European Oak meant only one or two craftsmen would be capable of attempting and pulling this off for us.

Martin was the first trade I called upon after winning the job as I knew his involvement was critical in elevating this project to where I wanted it to be.

Martin delivered in every way possible, and beyond, and his work speaks for itself. It was a pleasure working with him and I look forward to many more with him.

Our winner this year, Mary Louise O’Brien is a registered architect who has been involved in the construction industry for over 40 years. Over the last 5 years her involvement in the industry has changed joining MRH Build as a director and project manager. She is actively involved in the local Architects learning group where she facilitates greater understanding, relationships and knowledge between the two sectors of industry. Mary Louise is an advocate for fostering the roles of women within the industry within MRH Build and also the broader community through local school engagement.

Joel Jensen Constructions

This year’s award goes to a South Lismore based builder, established in September 2014, whose business has successfully grown in the last nine years from four to a staff of 22.

Joel is capably assisted by Brittany Jensen, when Joel recognised a gap in the local building industry to take on any sized projects from new decks, bathroom/home renovations, commercial fit outs to new house constructions — he has raised the bar.

After judging numerous projects in the flood ravaged Lismore area and talking to owners, the judges were highly impressed with the dedication to getting his hands dirty, even after losing his own offices and workshop due to the floods. Joel’s flood resistant rebuild is seen as a model for how many local businesses can survive and thrive. Joel’s contribution to the community is extremely important to him. All his trades and suppliers are intentionally local, along with sponsoring local sporting groups. Following the February 2022 floods Joel’s leadership was paramount, and the urgency to help Lismore and surrounding communities wherever possible was at the forefront. Unable to get across the flooded river to assess the damage to his office and sheds, Joel led the team to houses where the flood waters had receded and went door to door assisting strangers to clean out their house. Congratulations Joel Jensen.

This two-storey, spilt level Hampton styled brick veneer home was designed to sit nicely within the steep block and preserve the protected teak tree in the rear yard. Large boulders were uncovered during excavation and used to create the retaining walls. Full height entrance breezeway with louvred windows maximise airflow and natural light. Blackbutt floors, railings and staircase are a consistent theme throughout the home.

This two-storey beautifully crafted home is nestled within an unconventional shaped block. Bleached timbers tie into the Tallowood deck. The judges were impressed with the custommade New Guinea pivot hung entry door opening onto the polished concrete floor. A meticulously crafted staircase gives the floating illusion with the absence of a visible stringer along the wall. The spacious bedrooms boast bespoke cabinetry and the bathroom, with floor to ceiling wall tiles, is enhanced with natural light.

The builder had to encounter the very steep block, with his team guiding concrete trucks reversing down the gravel drive. The building is a modern take on a traditional barn home with level and raked ceilings complemented with a dark moody exterior, internally enhanced with travertine tiles and oak floors. The large raking windows are a feature in the master bedroom and ensuite. The project was completed in nine months.

This is a beautiful, white two-storey with double plank fibre cement cladding that has exceeded the thermal rating required for the development. The builder utilized a 75mm 40 MPa topping directly over the slab and polished, not even a hair line crack has appeared. The upper level offers three spacious bedrooms with two balconies and views over Sharpes Beach. Raked ceilings with triangular windows, engineered timber floors all compliment the 60mm stone bench top and stylish kitchen add to the overall finish.

Polished concrete greets guests on entry, walls are finished with Giorgio Istinto lime render over the plasterboard lining. The kitchen is 30% black satin two-pac flat profile. Terrazzo style floor tiles to wet areas add to this eye pleasing construction.

This building has a master suite downstairs with three bedrooms and bathroom on the upper level, and multiple balconies. The stone-lined entry and fixed vertical privacy vertical louvres are impressive. Vertical timber battens were expertly installed along the stairway with subtle lighting under the handrail. Vee-jointed lining to the upper-level walls fit beautifully and match the internal doors.

Floors are American Oak with a slight white tint. Todd aligned the head of every decking screw as his signature finish. The brass handrail has 12mm round balusters individually hand screwed into the 50mm top rail as secret fixing. A marble clad fireplace is the centre piece of the living room.

This home, perched on a ridge, took 22 months to complete. It features a combination of solid stone, woodgrain vertical weathertex and batten cladding, exuding an English feel. During excavation, basalt rocks were reused to create the entrance, driveway and rear retaining walls. Two 110,000 litre water tanks were installed underground. Solid timber double hung window are complemented with brass fittings. The six elegant bathrooms feature handmade Moroccan tiles and handmade baths.

Atlanta dedicated three years to construct this home (deemed by Byron Shire Council as sacrificial as it is only 30 metres from the beach). This meant the build is on piers in lieu of a concrete slab, even the pool “is hard to believe” fibreglass. The main materials include Fondale porcelain tiles internally/externally, slabs of Italian travertine flooring and blackbutt timbers to create this private compound. The stateof-art kitchen boasts Dolomite Island benches with Bora and subzero appliances.

The build is a Hempcrete Californian style, (carport, living area and bedrooms) so the landscaping was crucial to tie it altogether. Basalt crazy paving anchored the main living area. Turf and cobblestones create vivid contrast, with low maintenance cactus and succulents.

Drainage was installed under the railway sleepers and the random paving.

A large two panel lift door from the gymnasium opens onto the covered outdoor area under the skillion roof.

Split over eight storeys, it features a new regional art gallery, multi-level library, public workshop spaces, multilevel council offices, a 300-seat entertainment venue. Architectural features are the ‘open-air’ Atrium with a central cantilevered stair and a bespoke façade featuring concave and convex curves. The façade is a highly efficient structural design to reduce weight resulted in no onsite welding/ drilling during installation.

The original Lismore Club was extensively damaged during the 2022 floods and over four months was transformed into multitask office facility. The original façade was maintained along with some entry detail and history. The polished timber internal stairs are still featured along with the handrail and balusters. Back of house has been fitted out for kitchen facilities, along with numerous offices upstairs.

A prefabricated curtain wall façade system was used, arrayed on each level in a pattern which alternated between Spanish extruded glazed panels and protruding ceramic ‘fins’. The vertical alignment of the fins then alternates across various building levels. The complexity of the façade is highlighted via cantilevered arches above the entry to the internal street. Structural steel is integrated (hidden) inside the façade system, while being suspended from the level three concrete structure and curving across both axes.

Using recycled bridge timbers from all over Australia to populate the structural rafters of the upper floor. All the wrap around pergolas and decks on the upper level and lower floors. Anthony Martin

Anthony began his apprenticeship at the age of 15, working alongside his father in 1961. Together, they crafted windows and kitchen cupboards in a shed at home. He vividly recalls cutting hardwood frames on-site using a petrol Sawmaster, a tool he still possesses to this day. In the early days, footings were dug by hand until the late 60s when the introduction of backhoes made the process more efficient. Upon completing his apprenticeship, Anthony dedicated three nights a week for three years to the Clerk of Works program. In 1968, he became a partner in the family business, specializing in renovations and home construction. This venture spanned many years, providing services to numerous clients. In 1971, Anthony joined the MBA and has maintained his membership ever since. He is highly regarded within the building industry, recognised for his extensive knowledge and expertise.

Stephen Chapman

RESIDENTIAL

MAJOR WINNERS

COMMERCIAL

Stephen is a builder with over 49 years of experience in residential building, as well as commercial fit outs and repairs. His true passion lies in passive solar design for the domestic market in Australia, aiming to improve living standards for all at a reasonable cost. He constructed his first passive solar house 23 years ago, which was built under the CSIRO Five Star Rating Scheme of that time. Stephen is a qualified carpenter and licensed builder, having held a builder’s license for 49 years. He was among the first NatHers assessors, now known as the Basix Scheme, and is also a GreenSmart builder. He has served as a Mentor for the MBA CAMS scheme and currently holds the position of President of the MBA Hume Division, a role he has fulfilled for the past three years. Outside of his professional endeavours, Stephen enjoys hobbies such as scouting, bush care, land regeneration, and volunteer work with the Australian Red Cross. He takes pride in being part of the judging panel for the MBA Southern Regions Excellence in Building Awards.

Keith Bingham

Keith began his career at 14 years and 9 months, back in 1969. His journey started in a joinery shop in Melbourne, where he spent six months crafting windows, doors, kitchens, and various other joinery projects. This experience laid the foundation for skills in carpentry and joinery, and he started his apprenticeship shortly thereafter.

After six months, he transitioned to a new opportunity, continuing the apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery with Fred Holt, a small residential home builder in Melbourne. He completed his apprenticeship under his guidance and worked with him for a short time before embarking on a new chapter as a subcontractor.

Since then he has been self-employed, specializing in residential housing construction and renovations. In 1980, he made the move to Ulladulla, where he applied for his Builders Licence.

Keith has been a proud member of the Master Builders Association (MBA) for 19 years, and he considers it an absolute privilege to be part of the judging panel for the Southern Regions Excellence in Building Awards 2024, alongside Stephen Chapman and Anthony Martin.

The 2024 Western Regions Excellence in Building Awards honour businesses and people from Dubbo, Mudgee, Bathurst, Scone, Forbes, Katoomba and Orange for their excellent achievements in the building industry. This magazine has encompassed this year’s greatest accomplishments in the construction sector and the positive influence Master Builders Association has on the development of rural areas.

Western Judges Introduction

Barry Grainger, A.I.C.D

Barry is a fully qualified, licensed builder and has spent more than 45 years working in all aspects of commercial, residential, and industrial construction. His qualifications include Advanced Diploma of Building and Construction Management, a Civil Engineering Certificate and Local Government Inspection Certificate. Barry has served in many important positions within the Master Builders Association ranging from president of Newcastle MBA, Chairman/Director of MBA Group Training, Committee member/Treasurer NSW MBA Hunter Division and is a Life Member of the Association. Barry was a Jury Member of the Lower Hunter Urban Design Awards and a Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is currently the Executive Director of Newcastle Master Builders Association.

Greg Bennett

Greg started his apprenticeship in 1971 in the Hawkesbury area and studied at Penrith Technical College. In 1977, he started working as a subcontractor and then eventually obtaining his builders licence in 1978. Trusses and frames had only just begun to be manufactured offsite so most of Greg’s experience as a young carpenter was with conventional rooves and framing. Greg worked constantly as a master builder except for three years when he farmed exclusively. Greg had apprentices all through his working life including teaching indigenous youth at TAFE, where he enjoyed passing on his skills. Greg was in partnership with his brother for a short time after farming then worked as a sole trader until forming BLD Constructions with two former apprentices. In 2009, he was awarded Carpenter of the Year for NSW by Wood, Naturally Better. Greg enjoys all aspects of building and working with timber.

The use of prefinished cladding proved challenging when working it into both rustic and detailed elements.

Hill House was part of a greater plan to unlock the rear land for development. To do this, the original living room, kitchen, bedroom and laundry were removed and the floor plan rationalized to suit the new block. The design brief was to pay homage to the original 1953 art deco design elements. Set in a historic tree-lined street, this basic postwar cottage had its original roof and external walls restored, the internal concrete block walls skim coated with hard plaster and decorative cornice. A new kitchen, living and dining extension was added to the rear of the property. This showstopping project displays the significant potential for historic homes in Bathurst. A seamless result has been achieved including the retention of a significant amount of the original building fabric.

The owners of this beautiful home knew what they wanted. There are a lot of restored pieces in the renovation/extension, but the theme was, make it work. Inside proved even more of a passion for the clients with their love of restoring and reusing materials where possible. Splash backs are made from powder coated pressed tin. Pressed tin was also used in all the new ceilings to continue through from the ceiling in the existing part of the home. The home has come up extremely well and was a pleasure to restore and renovate.
