Showcasing The builders and projects we honoured in the Master Builders Excellence in Building Awards in 2019 are central to telling the story of Victoria and providing a proud, lasting legacy. Our members consistently demonstrate craftsmanship and professionalism that distinguishes them as the best in our state. Master Builder of the Year (Construction) The RACV Cape Schanck Resort earned Kane Constructions the top honour as the Victorian Master Builder of the Year (Commercial) at the Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards. It was an exceptionally complex project that relied heavily on the performance of Kane’s site management and project engineering teams. The new, seven-level integrated resort replaced the previous facility, bringing together all accommodation and guest amenities into a single building. Construction works were undertaken within a live, operational environment, with guests and visitors using the existing facilities daily. The remote, coastal location exposes the site to wind and weather from Bass Strait, and sand dune-like soil conditions which made executing the curved structure and façade elements a unique challenge. “There is no better example of the ‘Kane way’ than the Cape Schanck team who delivered the project,” Kane Constructions Joint Managing Director Richard Frisina said. “The team had to overcome enormous challenges, and the manner in which they delivered the project is as impressive as the end result. We thank them for their commitment to the project and to Kane.”

Kane Constructions is a privatelyowned commercial construction company active in all sectors of the industry. With a turnover of $1 billion and over 450 full-time employees, the company operates along the Australian east coast and overseas with offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. The head office is located in Richmond, Melbourne. Founded in 1973, Kane has completed over 2000 projects across all sectors of the industry. The organisation brings the knowledge, experience and financial stability of a large, well-established construction company that has been delivering consistently for over 45 years. “Our success is a direct result of the positive attitude and relationships our teams build with key stakeholders, consultants and clients,” Kane Constructions Joint Managing Director Tristan Forster said. We commend Master Builders on their awards program which provides the opportunity to showcase the diverse range of projects being delivered each year.”

Regional Builder of the Year (Construction) Kane Constructions and joint venture partner Fairbrother Construction (Kane Fairbrother) was named Regional Commercial Builder of the Year for exceptional delivery of the Rivergum Residential Treatment Centre in Ararat. Rivergum is a secure, 20bed facility that provides shortterm treatment for offenders on supervision orders. The facility has 20 cottage-style units, administration buildings, chapel, recreational spaces, landscaping and supporting infrastructure. Both Kane and Fairbrother are extremely proud of the project. “The success of the team was evident through the delivery phase with strong camaraderie and an unwavering focus on the project delivery,” Kane Constructions Director Geoff Purcell said. “The teamwork went well beyond the Kane Fairbrother staff, with strong relationships being developed with the client, consultants and local subcontractors."

excellence

In early 2017 Kane Constructions and Fairbrother Construction (Kane Fairbrother) established a regional joint venture partnership with the aim of drawing on their collective personnel, regional/ correctional experience and corporate strength to tender this unique and challenging project. The regional partnership was established based on the strong connections between Kane and Fairbrother and a mutual respect of their histories, cultures and working methods. There have been many connection points between Kane and Fairbrother, including Fairbrother’s Victorian General Manager Mick Josey, who is a former Kane employee. Both firms have a long history at industry level. It was through this strategic relationship Kane Fairbrother was awarded the fixed lump-sum contract in July 2017 to construct the new Rivergum Residential Treatment Centre (Rivergum). The project was delivered three days ahead of schedule in September 2018.

Master Builder of the Year and Regional Residential Builder of the Year (Housing) In a rare accolade, Larkin and Drought Homes was awarded both Master Builder of the Year and Regional Residential Builder of the Year (Housing) for a Barwon Heads home that features concrete walls contrasted with American oak as the primary architectural feature. “We feel that the Master Builders awards program inspires us to keep the quality of our finish to a high standard and it has helped us to build a strong reputation as an architectural custom-home builder in Geelong and the Surf Coast,” Drew Larkin said. “Winning the major award this year gave Craig and me, and our whole team, the confidence to know we are producing some of the best quality homes in Victoria. We’d really like to acknowledge the quality of the other homes in the competition, too!” Based in Geelong, Larkin and Drought Homes was formed in 2006 by Drew Larkin and Craig

Drought. They have consistently received recognition for a range of Master Builders Victoria Housing Awards’ categories since 2010, before winning the 2019 Housing Regional Residential Builder of the Year and Master Builder of the Year. Drew began his career in 1996 as an apprentice joiner/carpenter and was awarded Apprentice of the Year for joinery/ Carpentry in 1997. After five years in joinery, he moved more toward residential construction, and sub-contracted to various builders before becoming a registered builder in 2002. Craig started as an apprentice in 1990, working on small commercial jobs, before spending seven years at Oak Park Constructions, where he became a foreman overseeing up to 80 construction workers. With Craig’s broad construction knowledge and years of experience coordinating trades and dealing with practical challenges, and Drew’s building expertise, Larkin and Drought Homes take pride in delivering projects to a high standards and on-time for their clients.

CEMENT

Strength built on using right cement for the job Although the terms cement and concrete are often used interchangeably, cement is actually an ingredient of concrete. Concrete is basically a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and cement. Cement comprises from 10 to 15 percent of the concrete mix, by volume. Through hydration, the cement and a portion of water react and harden, binding the materials into a rock-like mass. But there are many different types of cement and all of them have different applications.

The most commonly used type of is General Purpose (GP) cement which is for general use in all types of building and construction, General Purpose Blended (GB) cement, or Builders cement, is also for general use in all types of building and construction, however early rates of strength gain may be lower than those of Type GP, and curing may be more critical for full strength development.

very hot weather), or where moderate resistance to chemicals is needed.

Another alternative is High Early Strength (HE) cement, which is used where early strength is a critical requirement, such as for the early stripping of formwork, in very cold weather, in repairs to concrete structures.

There are also white, off-white and coloured powders available.

Low Heat (LH) cement is used where rise in concrete temperature must be limited to avoid thermal stress (such as in mass concrete construction or in

Shrinkage Limited (SL) cement is designed to be used where limiting the drying shrinkage of concrete is necessary for crack control, such as road pavements and bridge structures and Sulfate Resistant (SR) cement is needed where high resistance to sulfates is required, such as in sulfate-bearing soils and groundwaters.

Other specialty products include Mortar, Oil-well utilised in grouting gas, oil and other deep bore holes and wells; and High Alumina Cement, where high early strength and/or resistance to very high temperatures are required (such as refractory concrete and factory floors).

CEMENT

Unique and interesting uses for concrete Concrete is found everywhere in the world around us, as it is such a versatile and durable building material. Almost all residential, commercial, industrial, and public construction project rely heavily on concrete and cement product suppliers. Cement and concrete are used extensively in the construction of roads, sidewalks, bridges, curbs, and gutters. And for foundations, driveways, walls, and even drainage piping in residential products. It is also perfect for flooring in large warehouse spaces, as it is highly impact-resistant.

Aside from common applications, concrete can also be used in a variety of other interesting ways. Some examples of unique and interesting uses for concrete include: Concrete countertops: Concrete is durable enough to stand up to the needs of any kitchen and gives a unique look that can be easily incorporated into a variety of different designs. Concrete sinks: Concrete is growing more popular as a kitchen sink material; It not only looks good but requires very little maintenance. It’s easy to clean; can stand up to impacts, dings, and scratches; and will only need to be resealed once in

a while. Concrete fireplaces: Another increasingly popular use of concrete is in the creation of fireplaces. Concrete fireplaces can match the design of almost any room, from rustic to vintage to ultra-modern. A smooth concrete surround helps a room feel open and uncluttered. Concrete tabletops: A concrete tabletop can be both incredibly practical for its hardiness and durability, as well as a great accent piece for any home. It can be a particularly good choice for an outdoor dining space, as concrete is easily cleaned and will have no trouble standing up to all sorts of weather conditions.

DOORS

A door for all seasons In days gone by, people might have been restricted, not only with regards to the technology that was available but also with the materials that were used to manufacture these doors; this is no longer the case. People who are looking to have a new garage door installed in their homes have a wide variety of alternatives and options available to them; they simply need to get to know the options to choose the one that suits their needs best. Firstly, homeowners have the option to pick between automatic and manual doors. In the past, there was some concern over whether automatic doors posed safety risks, but there are now safety features to counteract the risks. The benefits of an automatic door include affordability, accessibility and

convenience. Tilt garage doors open via a tilting mechanism; there are two options for the type of fitting used, jamb fittings and track fittings, with jamb fitting being the traditional fitting. Tilt doors give the most opening height of any of the door options and are the best solution when there is not a lot of headroom in the garage. Although some people don’t like the look of the standard tilt door as it can sometimes date the look of the house. Sectional doors are usually divided into at least four panels stacked on top of each other that will ultimately become the structure of the entire door. These divisions allow the door to retract upwards so it doesn’t move outwards for it to open, as they are hinged together and have rollers inserted into the hinges, guided by a track each side.

These doors tend to be more popular because of the many designs and looks available. Roller doors operate vertically up and down; when rolling up the door rolls around itself into a cylinder. These doors are usually the most cost-effective and generally come in the one steel ribbed profile design. A side roll roller door simply rolls across sideways without lifting or reaching up; the side roll door, also only needs to be opened as wide as needed when gaining access to mower or tools. A side roll roller door is the ideal choice for a street front entrance, it provides security, ease of access with a wireless remote and a minimal loss of yard space while adding to the street appeal. The side roll roller door can also be used as a commercial shop front security door and can be installed in stores with low ceilings while giving a full-width shop front opening.

INSURANCE

Get the right coverage, the right advice and the right support When speaking with members throughout Victoria, we still encounter builders who advise us that they arrange their insurance through another broker, or directly with an insurer, and often aren’t aware of the benefits of placing cover through MBA Insurance Services (MBAIS).

Within the building industry you have specialist trades – plumbers, electricians, carpenters, tilers and the list continues.

The differences in cover found in construction insurance are substantial, but not widely known within the general insurance industry.

While a capable tradesman might be able to cross over into another trade and do a reasonable job, would you bet your business on it being done right?

Having an in-house 30+ year veteran of construction insurance, who has worked on hundreds of complex large construction losses, and who knows construction inside and out, helps to ensure builders are better off with MBAIS.

Entrusting your business with a specialist construction insurance broker ensures you have the best possible coverage along with the expertise to handle claims and provide risk management advice, and of course deliver competitive premiums.

In addition to our own technical expertise, in the event of a large claim, we frequently utilise relevant MBA services like Legal, OH&S, and Industrial Relations, which helps MBAIS seamlessly deliver the best possible claims outcomes for our builders.

With over 60 staff nationally, and over 30 in Victoria, at MBAIS we regularly see claims in areas only covered through having the right insurance policy.

Whilst service and relationships are important in business, when things go wrong, you need to be confident you are backed by the right insurance protection, risk management, and support, otherwise you are putting your business at risk.

While most members are open to MBAIS reviewing their program and providing quotes, it’s when we get into the detail about what hasn’t been covered, including real-life claims examples, the benefits of using a specialist construction insurance broker are obvious. Unfortunately for some builders, they discover they have the wrong policy after they have an uninsured loss. In simple terms, the role of an insurance broker is to negotiate the best insurance contract for their client at the most competitive price. The insurance contract offers protection for your business and ultimately protects your livelihood and lifestyle. With construction insurance contracts having such a high degree of variation and complexity, its worth using a specialist construction insurance broker who deals exclusively in the contractor space. 16 | 2019 Master Builders Victoria Build Source

The insurance industry is no different. Would you have an electrician tile a bathroom or a bricklayer plumb a kitchen?

We have developed our own exclusive policy wording, and also have access to specialist construction insurers that provide flexibility with coverage solutions. With our size and buying power, we can typically provide you with broader cover at more competitive premiums. Once the appropriate level of cover has been arranged, in the event of

a large or complex loss, we involve Richard Grounds, MBAIS National Technical Manager. Richard is a qualified engineer, and is widely regarded as an industry expert within construction insurance for claims management.

MBAIS can review your current program free of charge, and provide you with specific detail on any gaps in coverage for you to consider. As a specialist construction insurance brokerage, with genuine claims expertise and access to MBA services, builders are better off with MBAIS. We’ve got you covered.

LACEWORK

Chatterton Lacework reproduces Victorian era lacework and balustrade Melbourne-based lacework and balustrade manufacturer Chatterton Lacework can reproduce the old lacework and balustrade on those old Victorian properties in order to satisfy heritage regulations. This reproduction of existing lacework is often necessary in order to satisfy many of the regulations specified by the local shire. There are numerous heritage designs of lacework currently in stock or can be made to order. However it can be difficult to replace existing lacework or balustrade, even though it may have been registered at a similar period of time to the existing lacework or balustrade. For some reason the local shire can be very difficult, maybe it’s a lack of understanding of the lacework or balustrade designs and where they originated from. Chatterton Lacework is a family business which began trading, as Chatterton Brothers, in 1946. 18 | 2019 Master Builders Victoria Build Source

In those early years following the war the company specialised in drilling for water to be used in irrigation, a legacy that will live on for many years.

members Otto Meilerts and Bohdon Wasyl.

A wrought iron manufacturing business developed as a result of the ongoing demand for steel casing to supply these water bores.

The manufacturing of wrought iron was replaced by the manufacturing of wrought iron components and wrought iron accessories.

During the periods when they were not manufacturing these incredible steel pipes to pump the water the opportunity arose for a manufacturing business requiring little material to utilize the abundant staff.

Other products manufactured included a range of Kookaburra Letterboxes, an extensive range of gate and fence accessories and the traditional heritage lacework and balustrade panels used today in the restoration of Heritage homes Australia wide.

It was at this time wrought iron gates, flywire doors, wrought iron security doors, fire place surrounds with the most amazing designs, balustrades and spiral staircases become common practise for many years to come. Under the expert guidance of the late Lyall Chatterton the business grew into a large, well known business employing up to 35 staff members ably assisted by long time loyal staff

During the mid-1980s period the structure of the business changed.

A range of Victorian Restoration products including the reproduction of many old style and heritage lacework and balustrade designs has assisted in complimenting the extensive range of products. During this period the company changed its name to trade as Chatterton Lacework as it is known today.

SOFTWARE

Reduce cost and risk of managing defects Based on proven technologies and built on years of experience ConstructionID will save builders precious time, enhance the quality of information and ultimately prevent rework. Rework costs can be as much as 12.4% of project value1? Defects alone contribute two to three per cent of a projects costs during the construction and Defect Liability Period phase. When working on bare bones margins already these sorts of figures cannot be ignored. All projects small to large, wide to tall have the same problem - quality takes time. By reducing the lost time spend on administration of rework, ConstructionID allows you to spend more time focussing on the many other complex issues that await you on your project. The earlier you implement the

ConstructionID discipline on a project the better. Too many times we have seen the important defecting stage blown out by a huge number of defects which are ‘rushed’ to rectification to get practical completion on the project. This approach leads to more issues post-construction. It does not need to be like this. By alerting subcontractors and trades early as to what the expected level of quality is and what constitutes a defect or quality issue the quality of workmanship rises and the number of defects that exist for the final defects inspection is reduced significantly.

only what you tell them they can do. The mobile and web eco-system in ConstructionID allows you to collaborate and share information and rectify quality issues as a team – this can be accessed and modified from any location and means you can be productive even if you are physically not on the project. ConstructionID is modular which means you only need to use the tool for a job without having to buy the whole toolkit: if you only need the defects module you only need to buy the defects module.

Defects should not be the sole problem of the builder or head contractor to manage.

ConstructionID works on tablets, mobile phones and web browsers so it can help you directly in the field and in the office.

You can check in from anywhere on progress.

SURFACE PROTECTION

Goop makes protection easy They say innovation is the key to success and when it comes to thinking outside the box and applying a creative approach to business, you would struggle to find two people who epitomise this model better than Shane and Kirstee Copley of Goop Guys.

“Our business is built on integrity; integrity in our product and our people. We also pride ourselves on a quality product that is safe for the environment as it is totally water based, non- toxic and nonhazardous.

The idea for Goop Guys came about when Shane and Kirstee owned a builders’ cleaning company and saw firsthand the damage being done to surfaces during the construction phase, and the cost of replacing damaged or scratched surfaces. They also recognised the need for the protective coatings to be easy to apply and remove. The couple began to look for ways to help prevent this and it is through this search that Goop Guys was founded. Beginning operation in 2001, Goop Guys achieved immense success in the early years and as a result, franchising of the company began in 2006. Since its inception, Goop Guys has grown to be Australia’s number one temporary protective coating with 15 franchisees in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, whilst also exporting internationally to nine countries. 28 | 2019 Master Builders Victoria Build Source

The Goop Guys started with protective films for external windows and soon expanded the product line to include windows, frames, specialised hard-coated glass, Perspex, UPVC joinery, behctops, cupbouards, bathtubs, stainless steel and floors. With a business built upon the key and unwavering principle of integrity, Goop Guys strives tirelessly to ensure customer satisfaction in every element of business. “We are a family owned business with products manufactured in Australia,” Kirstee said.

We also pride ourselves on a quality product that is safe for the environment as it is totally water based, non- toxic and nonhazardous. “Couple that with not having to worry about the homeowners demanding scratched surfaces be replaced and it is a no-brainer – prevention is far cheaper than cure.” With a five-year plan to continue to expand their business both locally and internationally, Shane and Kirstee look forward to displaying their continued commitment to integrity through exceptional customer service and a first-class quality product for years to come.

WATER TANKS

Detention tanks made simple Waterline’s range of detention tanks control the flow of water during storm events and offer additional storage options for the ultimate in energy efficiency. Waterline Tanks can custom design tanks to work with specific council plans and flood mitigation requirements. This is one major benefit of using Colorbond steel tanks over other types available. Stormwater detention tanks reduce the flow of water into the stormwater infrastructure through a restricted outlet known as an orifice. This mitigates the pressure on existing infrastructure by spreading the water release from the property over a period of time. Drainage engineers will specify the required tank capacity and orifice size, and Waterline can make the tank to suit. All connections are set up to suit your site requirements for a quick and neat connection by the plumber.

Detention tanks can either be a stand-alone tank which is wholly used for stormwater detention, or Waterline can manufacture a combination tank where only the top portion of the tank is used for detention storage. The bottom portion of the tank can then be used for garden watering, or be connected to toilets, boosting your energy ratings. Other benefits of using Colorbond steel tanks include:

Designed to suit. Built to last.

• Longer warranties • Watermark approved • Flexible design – custom dimensions at no extra cost • No wasted space due to air voids • Large retention fittings can be placed anywhere on the tank without compromising its structure Get in touch with Waterline to secure your exclusive Master Builders discount today – see ad below for details.

MASTER BUILDERS TRAINING INSTITUTE Builder Registration Program We offer unequalled support for those in the building industry seeking domestic or commercial registration. Our members benefit from access to the following services to help them achieve their goal of registration: • Nationally recognised training courses with government subsidies to approved applicants • Registration workshops • Registration application review • Preparation for VBA assessments • Expert advice throughout registration process Our current Builder Registration Program has been pivotal in helping members across Victoria get registered with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Our team can provide expert advice throughout the registration process, and by including technical workshops, application review and preparation for VBA assessments, our program ensures prospective builders are ready for registration. In February 2020, a new three-tiered offering will be available giving members even more choice in

services to help individuals prepare for registration and perform well under exam and interview conditions. Individuals will be able to select a package that best suits their needs to help boost their confidence and enable them to put their best foot forward. Exciting new inclusions are a simulated interview session at the immersive Building Leadership Simulation Centre (BLSC) and simulated VBA computer tests and plan reading assessments. All packages will also include access to new and improved take-home resources. Our program will also be more accessible to our regional members through increased webinar-based workshops, a priority which remains high for us. Previous Builder Registration Program webinars have already seen attendees logging in from across the state including the Macedon and Mornington Peninsula areas and we hope to reach many more remote and rural members in 2020.

SUSTAINABLE BUILDING Improved site management through environmental management plans and delivering energy-efficient and sustainable buildings are practices that are an essential part of future developments.

• Sustainable Construction – Commercial This training is specifically for commercial builders. Course participants will learn about green buildings, site management and complete their own environmental policy and management plan.

Training

• Master Builders Green Card – Environmental Induction This new, essential training module will ensure your staff are aware of their basic, onsite environmental responsibilities and competent in the use of essential environmental tools focusing on spill response and spill kit use. Master Builders believes environmental training should achieve the same level of competency as onsite safety training and the Green Card will offer basic awareness in a similar role to the White Card or Construction Induction Training. No one should enter your building site without the basic knowledge to obey environmental procedures and the skills to competently operate environmental equipment.

We deliver a number of nationally accredited training programs designed for both domestic and commercial builders. The training programs aim to provide builders and their contractors with the knowledge, information and tools to build sustainability options into their construction in order to better respond to client and tender requirements. • Master Builders Green Living – Domestic Specifically designed for residential or small-scale builders, you can learn how to easily meet the energy efficiency regulations and build energy efficient houses that are healthier and more comfortable for your clients.
