ROMA Some 500kms west of Brisbane lies the jewel of the Maranoa Region. Incorporated in 1867, Roma sits in one of the most fertile regions of South West Queensland on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range.

Perhaps chief amongst them are the largest cattle sale-yards in the Southern Hemisphere, with hundreds of thousands of heads of cattle passing through each year. For those inclined towards more relaxed pastimes, Roma is also home to Queensland’s oldest winery. Renowned for both its table and fortified wines, Romavilla Winery was established in 1863 and has not missed a vintage since. Just 90 minutes north, the Carnarvon Ranges offer an idyllic chance to wander through the ecological sights and sounds the area has to offer.

To the west lies the dry Channel Country, but within the Maranoa Region itself are subtropical bushwalks, ancient cycad forests, and views from the lookout over Arcadia Valley, making it an ideal location for a day-trip from town. Back in town, as the sun sets you can make your way to The Big Rig to enjoy their night light show. FEW outback towns punch as far above their weight as Charleville, the largest town in Murweh Shire.

Despite being almost 700km west of Brisbane, one of the town’s birthrights is its place as a centre for transport across the state. making homes in the area, Chinchilla State School was built in 1883 to educate 31 pupils. By 1913, the number of students attending the school had increased to 102. The Chinchilla Shire Council was inaugurated in 1912 with the first chairman being Mr L.L. Atkins.

Though modernity has brought enormous developments in the last decade, an old heart still beats in this town. The word Chinchilla was derived from the Aboriginal word for cypress pine, Jinchilla, after explorer Ludwig Leichhardt stopped here in October 1844.

A monument in his honour can today be seen in the Pioneer Cemetery on the busy Warrego Hwy, but it bears remembering that until 1877 there was no township at all.

Dairying was once a large industry in the area with the first butter factory built in 1910. In 1939, more than three million pounds of butter was produced locally. Primary production has always played a huge role in the Chinchilla shire and remains that way today. Along with dairying giving the town a name, Chinchilla is also famous for its melons and is a renowned spot for fossicking, fishing, bushwalking and camping.

The first major development was the railway. Built in 1878, the rail carted livestock, timber and grain out, and brought in passengers seeking their fortune. It was a critical period of growth for the town. The peak number of passengers using the train was in 1949, when 9569 tickets were issued. To accommodate families

HEART OF THE BASIN

Miles is a thriving rural town located at the junction of the Warrego and Leichhardt hwys THE area was explored by Ludwig Leichhardt who, in October, 1844, named a tributary of the Condamine River, Dogwood Creek.

When the railway creek crossing was constructed and opened in 1878 by the Minister for Railways, William Miles, the settlement at the area was named after him.

The town had always been a thriving agricultural hub of sheep and cattle, but these days the market is dominated by several prominent stud cattle lines, and a strong cropping industry. In recent years the town, which is 46km west of Chinchilla, has experienced an explosion of activity as a result of the coal seam gas industry with hundreds of new houses built along with several new motels and large worker accommodation camps. The 2011 census listed Miles’ population at about 1800 people, however,

the fluctuating nature of the CSG workforce means the area could have a population anywhere between that number and thousands more.

A calendar favourite in the Miles district is the Back to the Bush Festival, a Biennial September showcase of community activities and events that capture the town’s living history, celebrate its relaxed country lifestyle, and provide ample opportunities for community and visitor involvement.

AS WELL as Miles’ own state school, the area also boasts thriving state schools at Drillham, Dulacca, Condamine, Wandoan and Taroom. In 2013 Miles State School became one of Queensland’s first Independent Public Schools. A trial program for a period

of four years, the Independent Public School initiative aims to increase autonomy in decision making, cut red tape and remove layers of management to improve outcomes for students. The move has already seen great success among students.

After completing their schooling with a tight-knit group of friends at primary school, many students go on to study at Miles State High School. A jewel in the school’s crown is the state-of-the-art Trade Training Centre. The Miles High Training Centre provides a range of quality trade training opportunities for students in the areas of engineering and furnishings.

Students in the centre work on projects that are used within the wider Miles community with quality projects ranging from picnic tables and seating that will be used in local estates, display cabinets for the Miles Historical Village and a range of products for other local organisations. The other standout in the Miles district’s educational capacity is Columboola Environmental Centre which all are proud of. The Education Queensland centre can offer full program support for up to 75 students.

The expert teaching team runs activities such as water ecology, canoeing, orienteering, high and low ropes, problem solving and team building, to name a few, for visiting school groups from right across Queensland.

HOW TO EMBRACE COLOUR IN THE KITCHEN IN 2019 Having just revealed a green kitchen in episode one of their latest whole home reno, Lana Taylor, one-third of Three Birds Renovations, reveals her hot tips for embracing bright hues in the year to come.

We’ve all read the articles talking up the year’s colour trends for kitchens, and if we’re honest, it can sometimes feel a bit daunting when colours like ‘petrol’ are being tossed around.

A kitchen is such a big investment – you really need to get it right and for many people that goes hand-in-hand with creating a kitchen that you’d describe as timeless.

Having said that, you need not restrict yourself to white. In fact, there are plenty of other colours to consider that we believe can transcend trend charts.

GLORIOUS GREEN Green, in any shade, is growing in popularity and it will only continue to do so. When used in interiors, the hue makes a subtle nod to nature and in its palest form feels fresh and calming.

Of all the renovations we’ve done so far, our mint green kitchen from House 5 is still one of our favourites, and there are so many examples of this colour working well in both a modern and retro setting.

In that particular reno, we created a modern kitchen with a touch of traditional. The ‘modern’ elements shone through in the flatfronted cabinetry, gold handles and integrated appliances.

The ‘traditional’ came from the legs on the island bench, which made it feel more like a piece of furniture than an island.

In our latest renovation, House 9, we’ve pushed the boundaries with a bolder green called Lorna by Dulux. You’ll notice that we only used the hue on the island bench and kept all the other cabinetry white to tone down the overall look and give the kitchen greater longevity.

Without a doubt, the coloured island is the statement piece in this kitchen and packs a punch with personality. The black glass display cabinet is another feature which acts to counter-balance the bold green island.

If the owners wanted to update this kitchen in the years to come, replacing the cabinetry will prove much more affordable if it’s just the island bench, rather than the whole kitchen.

Like a well-cut, double-breasted blazer, navy adds a sophisticated look that will stand the test of time and suit lots of different styles – although we like it best in homes with a Hamptons, coastal or modern country style.

Navy is uber versatile and you can team it with any of the neutrals (think beige, grey, white and timber), but we love the fresh, crisp effect when it’s contrasted with bright white benchtops.

Bonus points for Navy: Navy cabinets make handle selection a breeze because almost every finish looks good with the shade.

Stainless steel, nickel, pewter, chrome, gold, brass, need we go on?

BACK IN BLACK You can’t go past black when it comes to adding richness and depth to a room. Done right, it oozes style, sophistication and drama.

SHADES OF GREY We think grey kitchens are a beautiful alternative to white.

Grey is the ‘new neutral’, and it’s become widely accepted as a mainstream colour for exteriors and kitchens alike.

Just like white, grey offers the perfect neutral canvas for bringing in splashes of colour and warmth through your choice of accessories and styling. It also looks divine teamed with timber.

A decision you’ll have to make with this one is whether to go blackon-black – with black cabinetry and black benchtops, like we did at The River Shack – or to go for contrast via a white or timber benchtop.

They both look fab, so the decision is yours.

SING THE BLUES Navy blue is becoming a popular choice for people who want to use colour, without really using colour.
