Services designed to make life easier The needs of the older community are met through a variety of groups.

IN THE wise words of Frank Lloyd Wright, “the longer I live the more beautiful life becomes.” Thankfully, the Bundaberg region has a wealth of valuable options for seniors whether they are looking for affordable living, entertainment, companionship or to explore what our great state has to offer. The needs of the older community are met through

a variety of community groups, including the YMCA’s 60 and Better Program where locals such as our featured resident Des Kemp work hard to provide activities and outings. As can be seen throughout Seniors Living, health is also a strong focus and local providers are committed to providing a thorough and convenient service for seniors.

The C2G Financial Services team continue to share a wealth of experience with their clients.

Advice in your best interest C2G Financial Services has been servicing clients throughout the Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gladstone for more than 35 years. The business has clearly shown it is here for the long term and continues to offer the long-term services and relationships that have been established over the years. Louise Jealous-Bennett, a superannuation specialist with an accountancy background, with firmly grounded family roots in Bundaberg, has been the proprietor of C2G since 2006. Louise highlights that since then, the world of financial planning has changed a lot; many clients found themselves in either outdated products or services with very high fees and no great returns. “We wanted to join an independent financial services enterprise, one not owned by any bank, insurance company, fund manager or superannuation

provider so we could operate freely without institutional restriction or bias,” she said. “That is how we found GCR Financial, and amalgamated with them late last year. “We can now provide superior advice and services which are in our clients’ best interest, not the institutions best interest.” Gye Duncan is the managing director of GCR Financial Pty Ltd (AFS & ACL no. 333543). GCR stands for Gye, his wife Cara and their daughter Ruby. GCR has grown to more than 6000 clients Australia-wide, serviced by experienced and loyal staff in three locations: Brisbane, Norfolk Island and now Bundaberg. Gye brings more than 23 years of industry experience and knowledge to the diverse team that is GCR and said he believed in learning from the past while being a

forward-looking optimist, a strategic calculator and a persistent achiever. “The flow of success inter-connects with both personal life and business life,” he said. “For me, I love my work, so it doesn’t seem like work at all. Attitude is everything and I like working with people of similar positive attitudes.” Being regulated by the Australian Securities and Investment Commissions, GCR employs a full-time compliance manager, Marielle Andrew, to ensure all client dealings are in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations. But that is only one on a list of amazing tours that Bundaberg Coaches have. If you are more of a foodie, then the tour to tantalise your tastebuds is the Moffatdale Ridge Winery and Tuscan Feast Day Tour on April 22. e l b a l i a v a w o n Sleep Dentistry l a t n e D e s o o M at Orange Sometimes we’re in two minds about having that dental treatment that we know we need to have done, but we definitely don’t feel like having it done while we’re awake in the dental chair or making the effort to go to hospital for it. At Orange Moose Dental, there is another option. Imagine falling asleep and being gently woken up when your procedure is complete. That is the new reality at Orange Moose Dental. We are proud to announce that we can now offer conscious IV sedation or “sleep dentistry”, an ideal solution for patients suffering from dental anxiety. There are different types of dental conscious sedation techniques available to allow for a more comfortable visit to the dentist, all allowing some sort of depression of our conscious emotions and experience of our surroundings, usually to reduce fear and anxiety related to the dental experience. Oral sedation, Inhalation sedation and IV sedation are the most common types of

conscious sedation techniques used in dental practice. Sedation dentistry is very closely monitored by the Dental Board of Australia, Australian Dental Association, Australian Society of Dental Anaesthesiology and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. At Orange Moose Dental, a specialty trained professional is utilized for administering IV sedation, while Dr Venter performs the dental procedure, ensuring patient safety throughout the process. Patients can relax in comfort in a purpose built treatment room during the procedure and gently wake in our recently completed recovery room. It is important to understand that there are no such thing as a silver bullet where one type of service is ideal for all types of procedures and that’s why Dr Venter offers so many different types of services as part of the process to tailor each proposed treatment for each client that trusts Orange Moose Dental with their dental and oral health.

Up until now, clients in the Bundaberg region have been referred to the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane to have access to IV sedation services and Orange Moose Dental is proud to be the first practice now to offer this service at their beautiful facilities. If you have any questions or queries about IV sedation and want to find out if it is an option for you or someone you know, feel free to contact our office on (07) 4152 4404

Tooth Loss, its Consequences and Solutions At Orange Moose Dental, Dr Venter often sees patients who have lost their teeth and have had dentures for many years. The concern for many is the inability to eat and enjoy the food they used to, having to chew for longer to manage the size of the food in their mouths, often leading to digestive problems and then also not able to bite as hard as they used to. The problem with tooth loss After tooth loss, the biggest problem we’re faced with, is bone loss. We can lose up to 4mm of bone height within the first 6 months after losing a tooth. With loss of bone height, comes loss of bone width too. The problem with this is loss of stability and support of future traditional dentures. Any pressure from your dentures on your gums accelerates this loss of underlying bone, which is an ongoing process throughout your life. How dental implants could help you Replacing missing teeth can be divided into Fixed or Removable solutions. Fixed Solutions refer to a set of teeth, completely supported and retained by implants, where a removable solution, refers to a full upper or lower denture supported by implants and gum. Your denture will clip onto the placed implants and you can still remove it when you go to bed and when you clean the denture. With the removable option, you still lose underlying supporting bone where the denture is supported by only gum, usually towards the back of your mouth.

Fixed Implant supported prosthesis

Fixed Implant supported prosthesis

With the fixed option, your set of teeth are more slim line, usually easier to clean and feels less invasive to your lips, cheeks and tongue. This set of teeth can only be removed by your dentist with special instruments and usually feels closer to natural teeth than a traditional denture.

Teeth in a day

“Research shows that implant-supported dentures allow patients to increase the amount of chewing force by up to 300%, improves chewing efficiency with 20% and usually only need 1.5 to 3.5 times less chewing strokes to obtain the same outcome compared to patients with traditional full dentures” – Dr Carl E. Misch in Contemporary Implant Dentistry, 3rd Edition For both of these treatment options, your dentist had to have special training and if you’re interested in persuing any of these options, be sure to ask your dentist if they can show you any cases that they have done.

© Dr Hanno Venter Removable Implant and Gum supported denture

Dr Venter at Orange Moose Dental offers varieties of options within the Fixed and Removable treatment solutions and the first step for you would be to contact our office to arrange a comprehensive dental examination. Usually before dental implants can be planned and placed, Dr Venter will have to take a small view 3D xray of the area in question to assess the shape and volume of your jaw bone. This will help him to also give you an accurate treatment cost for the proposed treatment options. Dr Venter has all the equipment to take all necessary photographs and xrays in his practice and therefore eliminates the need to refer you somewhere else for these diagnostic aids.

A Fixed treatment solution Dr Venter offers at Orange Moose Dental, is a Nobel Biocare® product, called All-on-4™. This allows a full arch of upper or lower teeth to be replaced by only four dental implants placed in a specific way, following a specific protocol. By only using four dental implants, it keeps the total treatment cost down and allows for immediate function if minimum amount of implant insertion torque is achieved. Along with this procedure, Dr Venter works alongside a master ceramist and his team from Victoria for the procedure that allows the patient to go home that same day with a fixed set of teeth, ready to smile and eat. This comes to no additional cost to Dr Venter’s patients, due to the nature of the professional relationship between Dr Venter and this dental laboratory. Not everyone is suited for the All-on-4™ treatment solution but that is why Dr Venter will assess each patient on their own merit and provide treatment options suitable for that specific patient. Visit our website and facebook page for real life treatment procedures completed by Dr Venter himself and come and visit us to find out what treatment options are available to you.

Dr Venter has been trained in various dental implant systems and will use the product best suited for your situation.

All of the placed dental implants are followed up by Dr Venter on a regular scheduled interval and for the first year this is complimentary.

SEEING age as just a number and definitely not content to slow down, Des Kemp is making the most of everything this region has to offer. For Des, as an integral part of the local YMCA’s 60 and Better Program he loves nothing more than the opportunity to share the fun, excitement and friendship that comes as part of being a member of the group, helping to organise up to 70 activities a month for seniors to participate in. As Des said when he looked to his future, it always involved continuing to keep the 60 and Better Program growing and making activities that seniors wanted to participate in. “Sometimes it can be tough to be a senior with the cost of living seemingly increasing all the time so if we can find an affordable way to seniors to enjoy something as simple as a walking group then I am proud to help that happen,” he said. “I love Bundaberg and I believe it truly keeps me active to be a part of my community through the seniors’ forum working group, the Seniors Expo working group, and of course, the Burnett Bowls Club. “I am proud to be a part of the 60 and Better Program because it has been operating in Bundaberg for a whopping 23 years. “The 60 and Better Program is designed to ensure independent, involved and informed local seniors, and it offers a broad choice of physical, social and recreational activities aimed at multiple

Residents maintain their independence while feeling part of a community where they are loved, heard and valued. They enjoy an active lifestyle with regular group activities and interactive entertainment, including gardening, craft, games and live music. Our social program includes sightseeing bus trips and journeys to the shops, the cinema and special events. Morgan, a rescue dog, provides seniors with

cuddles and companionship. Children from local day care centres are regular visitors and fun gardening activities double as dementia care reminiscence therapy. Kepnock Grove features bright residential rooms which overlook beautiful landscaped gardens. Residents have access to physiotherapists, podiatrists, GPs, dental care, an on-site hairdresser and chaplaincy and church services. A retirement lifestyle community is co-located within the Kepnock Grove precinct, enabling couples to remain connected if one partner requires a higher level of care. Ruth van Beek, 80, embodies the community of love and care at Kepnock Grove. Living independently, she has an

active life as a volunteer and visits her friends in the aged care community almost daily. “My husband lived at Kepnock Grove aged care for three years and received excellent care. I keep going back to see the residents there as I know a lot of them and they knew my husband,” Ruth says. “I have volunteered at the aged care community at Kepnock Grove for the past seven years. I love being around elderly people, hearing them reminisce about what they did when they were young. I learn from them every day.” Environmentally sustainable and run with solar power, Kepnock Grove is one of 11 aged care communities operated by Carinity, a not-for-profit outreach of Queensland Baptists.
