WeLcome To The 2018 SuNShINe coAST BuSINeSS AWArdS It’s been another impressive year of doing business for many leaders in their field throughout our region and it’s exciting to see so many businesses from Caloundra to Noosa to the Hinterland step up and apply, or be nominated to apply for the Sunshine Coast Business Awards based on their outstanding performance, service and innovation. Our community will gather to celebrate our region’s exemplary businesses on Saturday November 17 at the annual Awards Gala at Novotel Twin Waters. The Awards showcase innovation, entrepreneurship and the commitment of our business community to growth, development and continually improving results across many facets of business operations. This year’s Award categories were expanded and the nomination and judging process was reinvigorated in response to constructive feedback from previous entrants and winners. Many of

The Sunshine Coast is a region of opportunity for businesses, both big and small and everywhere in between. Named the entrepreneurial capital of Australia, there is no shortage of innovation and growth in this thriving climate. While businesses continue to grow and expand, it is important that their vital contributions to the local economy are recognised. It is not always easy to pursue a passion and there are often hardships and sacrifices to be made when owning and establishing a business.

this year’s entrants and all finalists were also invited to be involved in skill-building workshops and media training to make the most of their business’s profile, ensuring that the Awards also give back to support our business community. Each year I experience many professional and personal learning opportunities during my involvement as Chair of the Awards and it is both inspiring and humbling to recognise how well our region is competing as a whole, at a national level. We have many businesses that are kicking goals and setting new standards within their industry, or even shaping brand new industries - regionally, nationally and globally. I especially enjoy meeting local business people and hearing about their journeys and the life lessons that every business owner and manager encounters, every week. I know that all of our judges share my enthusiasm for supporting the Awards and they generously volunteer to give their time and expertise. On behalf of

That is why is it so important that as a community, we celebrate the successes of those businesses who are doing well and inspiring others. The Sunshine Coast Business Awards are the region’s longest established business awards and have been recognising outstanding businesses since 1995. They set the benchmark for doing business and their accolades are something to aspire to. The event is not just about winning awards, it is about encouraging business success and providing networking opportunities.

acknowledgements

the Awards I’d like to thank every panelist and judge for your contribution and commitment. I’m also deeply thankful for the hardworking members of this year’s new committee who all give invaluable time, expertise, advice, network connections and thought to the Awards, all year long. I would also like to acknowledge our many sponsors who make these Awards possible and enable the recognition and encouragement of businesses of every size that are seeking to be the best they can be. Every nominee, finalist and winner deserves congratulations for striving for success and creating employment, sustainability and future business pathways for our region. Well done – and we look forward to celebrating with and for you at the Awards event in 2018. Best wishes Jennifer Swaine Chair – Sunshine Coast Business Awards

Whether or not a business receives an award, the recognition and acknowledgment it gains simply from being nominated means everyone comes out a winner. So, let’s celebrate our impressive and diverse business community as the nominees get set to attend this year’s Awards and encourage others to get on board when they roll around next year. BrouhAhA BreWery The term brouhaha means a noisy and overexcited reaction or response to something. And after being open for just over two years, Brouhaha Brewery is doing just that, adding a finalist spot in the Sunshine Coast Business Awards to their ever-growing list of achievements. Brouhaha Brewery is dedicated to keeping its brewery and restaurant as sustainable as possible and reducing the carbon mileage of the food that is used in the restaurant by prioritising locally sourced produce. Brouhaha's Head Chef, James Ostridge, partnered with Farmer Ken, of Maleny Wagyu, to create a Brewery-to-Farm-toPlate “Circle of Life.” Ken picks up the spent grain from each brew and makes the five-minute drive back to his Wagyu farm in Maleny to feed the grain to his cattle. James then hand selects a beast and has implemented a nose to tail cooking

ideology in his kitchen. The local butcher, Maple Street Meats, helps deconstruct the meat down into the best cuts of steaks, meats and offal, as well as creating Milk Stout & Wagyu Sausages and smoked pastrami for exclusive use in the brewery. What isn't used in the kitchen for stocks, steaks, patties and pies, is then used to make a Maleny Wagyu Dog Food for their local's furry friends. Founded by locals for locals, all staff within the brewery have a sense of pride of where they work, and it shows through the service, food and overall knowledge of the local produce, beer and brewing process. Brouhaha Brewery offer a delicious meal, awardwinning beer and an insight into the world of craft beer and independent brewing. Add to that the peace of mind of local and sustainable eating, and Brouhaha is worth the trip!

Aussie Soles is extremely grateful for its nomination at the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards.

Leigh and Peter Geddes are very pleased to be the new owners of Airlink Transfers. Their first experience with Airlink Transfers was as regular passengers: loving the flexibility of a true 24-hour service with personalised door to door service that met their time schedule (both are pilots). They didn’t need to worry about traffic, parking or flight delays. Drivers assisted with luggage and even offered a coffee stop at no extra charge.

This humbling acknowledgement recognises the company’s high level of customer service, innovation, use of technology and commitment to sustainability. Manufacturing is challenging on so many different levels but gaining this affirmation is a tangible measure of success, which is driven from the tireless efforts of Aussie Soles employees - who deliver the highest level of customer service and support to clients on every platform.

The couple were so impressed with the business and the exceptional level of customer service provided by the owners, office staff and the drivers

that when the opportunity arose they jumped at the chance to own the business. They are proud to offer a locally owned and run Sunshine Coast premium transfer service, which employs and supports local people, businesses and local events and want all customers to feel like part of the Airlink Transfers family. Airlink Transfers are thrilled to be nominated in the Tours and Transfers category and pride themselves on their customer service – it’s an absolute pleasure to go above and beyond for YOU, its valued customers.

Aussie Soles would like to sincerely thank Jennifer Swain and the Sunshine Business Awards judging panel for their tremendous support. This nomination means everything to the company and its employees already feel like they’ve won.

mAgIc Touch cLeANINg ANd mAINTeNANce Magic Touch Cleaning and Maintenance started in July 2012. As a husband and wife team, Anna Marshall and Michael Tunstall had ample experience and qualifications but had no equipment or clients. What they did have was a vision to create a business that provided flexible employment for them both, hoping they could earn a living, create stable employment at the same time as raise their five children without missing out on their daily routine and milestones.Their vision quickly become reality when they were overwhelmed with the demand for good cleaners on the Sunshine Coast.

The company believes “caring is the key to quality” and management, staff and cleaners work together to go above and beyond for all clients. They use an excellent job management software that has enabled them to keep growing, and gain flexibility in the way the business structures its services to suit each individual client. The business has a unique training program that ensures all cleaners are trained and assessed correctly prior to commencing work individually. The quality and training is constantly reviewed for every cleaner, proving

to be an effective way to maintain quality cleaners during constant growth. Anna and Michael also hope to provide employment to many more locals in the future, while providing the local area with an exceptional cleaning service for many years to come.

If you ever need a cleaner for your resort, office, home, holiday apartment or stadium/venue, they have the “magic touch.”The staff would be more than happy to provide a free quote or answer any queries you might have regarding your cleaning requirements.

Magic Touch Cleaning and Maintenance quickly grew into a small family-owned and operated cleaning business, starting out with a handful of regular clients that still regularly use their business six years later, and have also now built quite a large client base.

Magic Touch use an excellent job management software that has enabled them to keep growing, and gain flexibility in the way the business structures its services to suit each individual client. SuNcoAST SpINNerS Who are the Suncoast Spinners? Over a decade ago Suncoast Spinners wheelchair basketball club was born through the vision of local parents who recognised there were limited options for kids with disabilities to play sport and wanted to provide their children with sport opportunities on the Sunshine Coast.Thirteen years later, the club runs a weekly wheelchair basketball social competition as well as hosting Australia’s largest wheelchair basketball tournament annually, bringing in over 130 players from around Australia each January to compete across three divisions of competition. social competition over 10 years ago. Steven Elliott recently returned from the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Germany where he won a bronze medal representing Australia. What is Wheelchair Basketball? Wheelchair basketball is played in a specialised basketball wheelchair, designed for speed and agility. The majority of rules are the same as stand-up basketball, the main difference being that all players use a wheelchair to play.

At the elite Paralympic level, wheelchair basketball is restricted to players with a disability through a classification system based on physical impairment. Players with physical impairments are classified between 1.0 to 4.5. For example, 1.0 player would traditionally have reduced trunk function and a 4.5 player would have lower leg impairment but full range of trunk. To create an equal playing field, a team is permitted to have five players on

court that must not exceed 14 points. Why play Wheelchair Basketball? Players enjoy wheelchair basketball because it’s fun and competitive, as well as a great way to keep fit. Regularly playing and using a specialised basketball wheelchair develops fitness and upper body strength fast! For more information on how to play, contact info@suncoastspinners.com.au

Who can play Wheelchair Basketball? Wheelchair basketball can be played by anyone. The Suncoast Spinners Club welcomes players of all different fitness levels and abilities. Wheelchair basketball is a game that people with or without disabilities can play, creating an inclusive sport environment.

Lpe First-time nominee in the Sunshine Coast Business Awards 2018, Locality Planning Energy (LPE) was thrilled to be selected as a finalist. The Maroochydore-based electricity retailer began life as a start-up on the Coast in 2012 and has since been listed on the ASX, amassed over 20,000 customers and secured funding from BlackRock, the largest investment management firm worldwide.

As well as saving people money, the company is committed to supporting the local community. For LPE, this means maintaining its head office on the Sunshine Coast where it currently employs over 30 full-time staff members. Unlike the majority of its competitors, the electricity retailer have also opted to keep its call-centre local, in Maroochydore, providing more jobs and a better quality of service to its customers.

LPE was initially focused solely on strata communities, providing innovative solutions for high-density living that saved people money and reduced administrative burden for Body Corporates. In 2018 the company branched out into residential electricity, offering a local alternative to the large, multi-nationals and offers simple, flat rates with no confusing discounts.

LPE Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Damien Glanville said that they are looking at expanding geographically and increasing the product range. “With our expansion plans we are firmly committed to keeping our company headquarters and call centre on the Sunshine Coast; this is an exciting region to conduct

business and is currently undergoing billions of dollars’ worth of privately and publicly funded infrastructure,” Damien said.

We are confident that this will help showcase the region not only as an incubator for ideas but as a hub for successful corporate business.”

“We are very proud of the journey we have made from starting out in a small office in Cotton Tree to having recently secured a $30 million financing partnership with BlackRock.

Damien and the team at LPE are looking forward to attending the gala event in November; meeting, networking and socialising with other like-minded local entrepreneurs.

When we say that no job it too small or too big - we mean it. If your silver chain breaks, bring it in to us and we’ll fix it – sometimes while you wait. Adding to this is, these houses are usually energy inefficient, which ultimately ends up costing the owners even more as life goes on. Many of us know that we are damaging our precious planet and the houses we live in and the energy we consume, are a major contributor to that damage. Poorly oriented buildings constructed from inappropriate materials only inflame this problem, as they unnecessarily overuse electricity and other resources. Ecolibrium Designs (ecolibrium.com. au) design houses that last a lifetime because they respond directly to their surrounding environment.

They take great care to design houses that are comfortable to live in yearround. This means a home that is energy efficient and therefore reduced bills. Ecolibrium is a multi-award winning design studio that was established 12 years ago with a vision to improve how we live. They specialise in the design of environmentally sensitive buildings and sustainable property planning. By working with Ecolibrium you can build or renovate a beautiful home that protects both your investment and the environment.

Coming from a small country farming community, we knew the power of working together to achieve a common end.” It was a new beginning, and Coastal

STepS pAThWAyS coLLege college offers unique opportunity to disability community. Like many parents of a child with a disability, Anne Nioa knows too well the challenges in finding the right pathway for her daughter Ariana as she moves into adulthood. “Come to the end of Grade 12 and the transition paths are few and far between. The options are very limited,” Anne said. A Sunshine Coast disability training college is helping to bridge this gap, offering young adults with a disability a chance to learn skills to live an independent life of their own design. STEPS Pathways College is based in Caloundra and offers an innovative, holistic approach to teaching skills like maintaining a tenancy, healthy lifestyles, staying safe in the community and getting involved in recreation activities. College manager DJ McGlynn said the flexible learning environment is a big drawcard for many young people with a disability, together with their families and carers. “We’ve designed a curriculum that is both intensive, and able to be individually-tailored to help students achieve their own goals,” DJ said. “One of our current day students started out attending one day a week, then two. He now loves it so much he wants to become a boarding student next year. “The Day Program is a great option for many young adults with a disability on the Sunshine Coast who are beginning their journey towards independence.” While day students can practice the skills they’ve learnt within the comforts of their home environment, boarding students reside on campus, in a purpose-built accommodation unit complex. Learning goes well beyond the classroom though, with trainers assisting boarding students integrate their new skills into their day to day living environment. The College, part of non-profit organisation STEPS Group Australia, is proving to make a

difference, not just to the students, but also their families and home communities. Boarding student Ariana Nioa said she was inspired to study at the College after seeing her brother move out of home to attend university. “I like having fun and renting my own place. I like going out on Saturdays and I like to cook spaghetti bolognaise,” Ariana said.

ready to take on the world.” The College may be founded on the Coast, but it has bold plans for growth. “With enrolment enquiries coming from across the country, including big cities like Sydney and Melbourne, and many regional centres too, we know there’s demand for an opportunity like this,” DJ said.

Ariana is getting ready to graduate soon, and her mum Anne is proud of the huge strides she’s observed in Ariana’s education and communication.

Top five reasons to study at STepS pathways college:

“I think that the biggest changes with Ariana have been in her self-confidence,” Anne said.

• flexible learning – study as a boarding or day student

“Not only I have noticed it, but our family and all our friends have also commented that she’s been incredibly confident.

• individually-tailored program to help each student reach their goals • boost skills and confidence to make informed decisions

“She’ll take a bus, she’ll take the train home, and she won’t refer to me all the time with small decision-making.

• supportive environment

“Self-confidence has really been instilled in her in a very inclusive way and she’s brave and

Taps sold its first craft beer in 2013, long before the mighty behemoth of craft beer was where it is now. When the doors first opened, the only local brewery was Sunshine Coast Brewing. Now there’s upwards of 12 sitting on our back door. In the beginning, it was very much an educational process for the staff to inform customers of various beer styles, where they come from and the story behind each. Back then there was a frequent question,‘where’s the XXXX?’ But as Taps has grown, so has the beer community. With 10 taps located at the bar on a weekly rotation, customers can always try something new because understanding that everyone’s palate is different is where Taps comes into its own. The self-service beer system gives customers the option to pour just a mouthful to ‘try before they buy.’ Over the years, over 400 different beers have

graced their spot on the beer font. Taps have supported breweries from all over Australia and New Zealand, although somewhat favouring the ones from our own backyard. Beer launches,Taps Takeovers, beer education sessions, bar shouts and brewing days all ensure there is always something new to taste at Taps.
