Artist, academic and designer Dr Tarn McLean has worked steadfastly towards her goals: PhD, fine art exhibitions, luxury handbag label, wallpaper and textile designs, as well as a new business teaching people how to tap into their own creativity. By ALLY MARTELL

W

hen you meet people like Tarn, you think that perhaps they have a secret key which allows them to smuggle more hours into their days. How else do they manage to achieve so much? But when I first met Tarn, about 17 years ago, she was a young mum with

two small children and a dream to be an artist. Turns out it was more than a dream! Her vision was clear and she’s only wavered once. Tarn, Jondy, Oscar and Sara McLean moved to Toowoomba from a cattle property at Mitchell where Tarn had begun undergraduate studies in art at the University of Southern Queensland.

I can recall how she was inspired by the colours and textures of life on the land and her paintings at this time were absolutely authentic. Fast forward to 2016 with PhD in hand - titled “Grubby Mistakes and Beautiful Propositions: The shift of painting out as a way to look in.” – Tarn stepped into the unknown.

“I’d worked so hard to finish my PhD and in 2016 I had this moment when I didn’t know what I was going to do with it,” she said. “I sat and cried with Mum who asked me what I liked and I said ‘I like handbags’ so she told me to pick up the phone and ring the Fashion Council of Australia and find out about Australian-made handbags.”

Ocre – Oh so beautiful wallpapers, textiles and divine handbags

A

ustralia doesn’t really have a luxury handbag label and the opening in the market gave Tarn the opportunity to create her label Ocre. “Ocre started as wearable art,” Tarn said. “It took a while to find the right manufacturer but I have to say now, my manufacturer is insanely good! They guide me and support me and together we create these stunning luxury bags. “I was hand-painting the fabric lining of the bags and people were commenting on the fabric so the next thing Ocre textiles and wallpaper was born. “That was in 2017 and since then

04

TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, September 4, 2020

I have been creating two collections each year drawing on Toowoomba for inspiration: There’s the ‘Toowoomba Magnolia’ and the ‘Toowoomba Camellia’. “The wallpaper and textiles are printed to order in Australia; everything I design is made in Australia – I’m absolutely adamant about that. “I also offer a custom service and work one-on-one with clients to create unique fabrics and wallpapers that reflect their individuality and tastes. “These days I’m offering this facility to architects and builders as an add-on service to offer their clients.”

Fine art exhibitions

L

et’s not forget that Tarn is an artist and she paints the most fantastic paintings. She is currently working on her next series titled “Seeing Painting (The Museum)” and WOW... just WOW! We are talking large paintings here,

each one a photographic representation of an image from her phone taken at public art galleries in Australia. They are the permanent reminders of a snapshot in time. An image that she might flick through on her phone or post to Instagram is now on the wall forever. TCHE01Z01ST - V1

Finding Your Creative Why

“T

he only way for me to know if a path is right for me is to try it - to take a risk and do it.” Have you ever felt that you’re not achieving your full potential? Perhaps there’s a storyteller or an artist in there somewhere but you don’t know how to reach it? In order to achieve what she has achieved, Tarn has learned to draw on the never-ending resources of her own individual creative expression and now she wants to share this skill with others. “Everyone is creative but not everyone knows how to express that creativity,” she said. “I’ve been practising certain techniques for years and they work for me. So I encourage my students at USQ to

V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

practise the same techniques and they work for them too – and fairly quickly which is great. “I wanted to share these techniques and skills with others who might be feeling flat or a bit lost in their chosen field. So I’ve developed an online course which has been achieving really good results and, again, quite quickly. “Students of the course have told me about their discoveries, such as they realise that by making something it gives them confidence to make better decisions and feel more fulfilled.” Finding Your Creative Why would be a fantastic staff training exercise for any business as it encourages collaboration. “Can you imagine the possibilities if you encouraged your entire staff to draw on their combined creativity?”

‘Seeing Painting 2020’ (John Rogers Herbert and Rodin)

It’s only the beginning

W

ith solid foundations in academia, creative opportunities in art and a growing business, Tarn says she is just beginning. “I have some great mentors who have helped me develop a clear business model,” she said. “I am conscious that when I’m working on the business side of things, I’m not designing and when I’m designing, I’m not working on the business. “I’ve also learned to ask for help so I can remain focussed on what matters most to me.” TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, September 4, 2020

with hypnotherapist Kalí Alfaro

By KATHERINE SAMPSON

Kalí Alfaro not only stunningly beautiful, but she’s also spectacularly clever. The 40-year-old who completed her master’s in health psychology here in Toowoomba at the University of Southern Queensland is now a Perth-based psychologist and hypnotherapist - and in the final stages of releasing her very first book Empowered Minds.

The Beginning

B

eing born in Chile, Kalí and her family migrated to Australia when she was five. She experienced her own healing journey with hypnosis as she grew and being born into a family where there was sever psychological distress. Kalí’s mother suffered depression and as there was suicide in the family, her childhood was filled with a lot of emotional distress. In her early twenties Kalí experienced hypnotherapy for the first time and saw fantastic results. “I felt that I was finally getting lasting changes and I felt lighter and more capable of dealing with the challenges that life was throwing at me. That’s

when I was motivated to study hypnosis.” She had her initial tertiary education at Edith Cowen University in Perth where she completed a Bachelor of Communications and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology as well as a postgraduate diploma in psychology. It was during this postgraduate diploma in 2004 that Kalí began studying and practicing hypnotherapy. “The training was quite condensed. You get a lot of training all at once, and I loved the experiences I was having and I loved the changes that were happening before my eyes, so I dove straight into it,” Kalí says.

The Hypnotist

I

t wasn’t just straight psychology; Kalí says hypnotherapy gave her the ability to connect to your body from an incredibly relaxed state while having an altered state of awareness. “It’s a little bit like the sensation of when you wake up in the morning and you know where everything is but your body feels heavy and really relaxed but your mind is awake and aware,” she explained. “It is almost like this door to the subconscious mind opens and you are sort of floating between this conscious awake world and the subconscious world where things seem that they take on a different reality.” What is this obscurely old world, new world treatment exactly and how does it effect the human brain? At the very least it helps with relaxation, Kalí explained: “Hypnosis is essentially just going into theta brainwave and this is a natural capacity that the brain has.” This kind of hypnosis is far different to that of entertainment hypnotism, Kalí

06

TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, September 4, 2020

told Style. “It’s not so much that you are imposing something that is perceived like mind control,” she says. “Entertainment hypnosis makes people believe that you’re going to turn into some kind of zombie that will do anything and everything that you’re being told.” Kalí says hypnotherapy is more about inducing a state in the brain that will increase a sense of relaxation and suggest ability that changes can actually take place on a much deeper level. On the internet it seems just about everybody can be hypnotised, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Kalí noted that some people are easier to hypnotise than others, and the majority of those are people who have acquired a brain injury or some people that might have an intellectual impairment have a different level of functioning brainwaves. Kalí suggests for that population that hypnotherapy is not the most adequate treatment. TCHE01Z01ST - V1

The Sceptics

T

here is a tonne of scepticism that surrounds hypnotherapy as a treatment, and everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. However, Kalí describes it as simply a technique that allows the brain to be activated in ways that will help you function more effectively, so there’s nothing to lose. “It’s using the body’s own healing mechanisms,” she says. “There will always be people that will be sceptical or afraid and a lot of the time that is related to a lack of proper education on what hypnosis actually is. But it’s just using the body’s natural ability to do something but you’re using it with intention. You’re just teaching someone how to use the body in a different way.”

Better late than never

B Although Kalí resides across the country, she does take phone consultations, meaning she can help people from all corners of the globe. To find out more about Kalí, her work or her book – set to be released next month - visit www. alfapsychology.com

eing in the global pandemic we are in worldwide, everyone is constantly being bombarded by fear and stress. With limitations to usual coping mechanisms like exercise or socialising, Kalí understands that some might be struggling more than usual in these circumstances. “I’ve noticed in my clinical practice and also in my personal life with people around me that now that people have had some of their coping mechanisms taken away,” Kalí says. “This is an incredible time for people to go inwards and really reassess their life choices and how to create a much better life so that they can move forward in a healthier, happier way.”

The Book

W

ith years of hypnotherapy and psychology training under her belt, Kalí reached a point where she wanted to share her knowledge and understanding of her lifelong journey. “Healing taken me to remote villages around the world, learning ancient healing traditions from shamans, going to cutting edge neuroscience conferences and retreats from around the world,” Kalí says. Kalí found her space to share this journey in the opportunity of a book ‘Empowered Minds.’ “More people needed to know that they could empower themselves, and that they could do a whole bunch of things and activities and tasks that will allow them to connect to themselves better so

V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

that they can understand themselves better and get to a space of healing,” she says. The book is a combination from all aspects of Kalí’s life: part memoir, part clinical literature, review and case studies from her own experience – as well as exercises that readers can take part in including an hypnotic meditation. “It’s quite a comprehensive book that allows you to really relate to different aspects of people’s lives, and to have a greater understanding as to how your mind works, the mind-body connection and what you can actually do about it.” TOOWOOMBA STYLE, Friday, September 4, 2020

How to accomplish a polished Race day look The Spring Racing Season is here, starting with Weetwood Cup at Clifford Park and finishing with Melbourne Cup – wherever you are. Amanda Herron is a veteran Fashion-on-the-Field entrant and stylist and she shares her top five tips for getting race day ready. By AMANDA HERRON

DECIDE ON YOUR BUDGET

Are you competing in Fashions on the Field (FOTF) or are you attending just for fun? If you’re planning to enter FOTF, be prepared to spend more on your overall look - in the region of several hundred dollars for custom-made dress and/or millinery. However, if you’re just going to the races for fun, but still want to look ontrend, take advantage of online hire services for millinery and dress. I recommend www.millinerymarket.com.au for your headpiece and for your outfit try www.dressforanight.com.au or www.glamcorner.com.au

START WITH THE DRESS, OR THE MILLINERY

When putting a race day outfit together I find it easier to start with a dress and have custom millinery made. Having said that, I have also purchased an amazing hat and bag combo and built my outfit around them – so it can be done! If you are on a budget, then I recommend choosing either dress or millinery in one solid colour, then choosing the opposite piece to match. Consider complimentary or contrasting colours, pattern, print and embellishments. For example, a white headpiece with a turquoise, orange and white print dress.

BE MODEST AND DRESS TO FLATTER YOUR FIGURE

Competitive race wear is fairly modest in style – hemlines are longer, and necklines are higher. The goal is always to look elegant. Plunge fronts or backless dresses, strapless or even some sleeveless dresses are frowned upon by judges and may not fit with the image the race club wishes to portray. To gauge the standards at your local race club have a look at winners of the best dressed categories from previous years. You’ll soon figure out what’s expected. Also, don’t forget, it doesn’t matter how much you spend, or what label you are wearing, if the outfit doesn’t flatter your figure, it won’t score you any points. This is where your Personal Stylist can help!

AIM FOR TWO OR THREE FEATURE COLOURS

When it comes to colours, two or three work best and give a more cohesive look than different colours from head to toe. At the moment, we are very fortunate that metallics are popular and it’s easy to throw in some gold with your black and white, or rose gold with your powder blue and lilac look.

ADD FLAIR AND STYLE WITH ACCESSORIES

Accessories tie your look together and give it polish. They can become the crucial element in making your whole outfit work. Put some thought and planning into your heels, clutch, gloves, jewellery and nail colour. I have seen very plain dresses work spectacularly well with amazing millinery and a quirky clutch. Also, when it comes to grooming and deportment, make sure you invest in a good hair dresser and makeup artist for race day if you aren’t confident doing your own. Most FOTF entrants have their hair styled to suit their look and their headpiece. It’s obvious when someone has put in a little more effort because they really do stand out from the crowd!

Neutralise spring Dressing for spring can be overwhelming with so many prints, colours and one-off season pieces. If you are anything like me, you are drawn to go for timeless colours, cuts and styles to ensure you can wear the piece in every season and the added bonus is you get to pull it out each year if it is seasonal piece. By CAMILLA MEISE

I

love the all-neutral trend of dressing head-to-toe in white, grey, black, ivory, beige, taupe, khaki or brown. These tones are considered balance tones and they set the base to any outfit, but they complement this season perfectly. You can layer any outfit with neutral tones, but you can also layer an outfit with just neutral toned pieces. You can change up your looks by wearing slightly different hues of neutral tones or same colour for a classy and sophisticated look.

1. MACGRAW NEW YORKER TRENCH COAT $1595 2. GENERAL PANTS CO. HIGH NECK CROP TOP WHITE $19.95 3. CAMILLA AND MARC LUIS TROUSERS $420 4. NOVO ZENDRA SHOE $69.95.

OFF-WHITE

White is so popular already but dare to be different put an off-white piece in your closet to finish a look. Playing with some warmer shades can spice up your look without being too striking.

ALL-ONE TONE

If you are wanting to be striking with a sophisticated look, I recommend an all one tone outfit. Do a bold, all white suit combo that screams powerful woman or all ivory toned linen jumpsuit that shows the soft, gentle nature of a beach woman.

ACCESSORIES BOLDLY

If you are wearing a completely neutral toned outfit and want to brighten up your look, I recommend you accessorise your look with a bold yellow, orange or red tone piece, whether that be a handbag, earring, necklace or shoes.

TEXTURE

All-neutral and monochromatic looks can dare to be bold with a different texture. Pick an accent of statement materials like lines, lace, knits, wools, denims or straw and if the material has a bold pattern on it then pair it with a softer fabric like silk, cotton or crepe. If you want to be bolder with this look wear a sheer top and a bright coloured bra or bralette.

ADD STRUCTURE

I am obsessed with structured outfits lately and with spring coming soon there is no better time to show off your waistline again. Take advantage of crisp, structured pieces that are asymmetrical cuts, pleats, ruffles, belts, knots and statement sleeves that can create the perfect fit for any body shape.

ALL THE TONES

Throw a few different tones of neutral into one outfit; this look will leave you feeling like you can take on the world especially with a bold trench coat. I love to pair my looks with aspects of different beige, brown and white tones to create a well-balanced ensemble.

That time I tried to go

By BETHANY LARSEN

H

ave you ever imagined what life would be like without coffee? That is a question which I am now able to answer. Last month, as part of the breakfast radio show I do, I decided to embark on a journey of ‘21 days caffeine-free’. Yes, that’s correct, this ordeal did not just include coffee but all forms of caffeine: coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout, tea, Coca Cola and chai lattes too (I will get to that part shortly). Why would I attempt such a physically gruelling endeavour you may ask? Well, it turns out too much

of a good thing is not a good thing, and this very quickly became apparent. Australia’s famous ‘Doctor Karl’ is adamant that many studies have been conducted to prove that coffee has some health benefits, saying that we can easily consume three to five shots of coffee a day. I myself was having 600mg of caffeine a day, made up of several coffees, Red Bulls and a high stimulative pre-workout. Celebrity health guru Tiffany Hall from Tiff Hall XO also weighed in on the topic, keen to see the significant health benefits which would likely develop from cutting back. She explained that the human autonomic nervous system has two systems: the parasympathetic system which is like a

follower weighed in with some barista expertise… PLOT TWIST… Chai lattes, for those playing at home, often (not always) contain ‘tea extract’, which unfortunately means that I was drinking caffeine for four days without even realising it. This accidental and hilarious blunder was the lifeline that I needed, so I took it while I could and opted out. Sadly, I did not complete the full 21 days. I did however publicly vouch to drink significantly less caffeine, ditch the red bulls and better balance

koala and the sympathetic system which is like a lion and feeds off adrenaline. These two systems need to work in harmony together to avoid health risks like high cortisol and high blood pressure. She advised that I would notice less bloating, more consistent moods, better sleep, weight loss and less anxiety at the end of the 21 days. So, I put my sorrows aside, embraced the challenge and soon discovered that caffeine is seriously more addictive than first anticipated. For the first five days I truly was the worst version of myself. I was on the ground under my desk sleeping at about 9am after the radio show each day, I was binge eating sugar just to give myself some sort of energy rush and there were

many, many tears! One thing that I pride myself on is my positive attitude towards life which I believe is infectious to others. When my mood was turned upside down, it was contagious in a negative way. This was the hardest thing about the entire experience – the acknowledgement that I was bringing down those around me that I cared about, particularly, my radio co-host Nik. I would like to take this opportunity to formally apologise for that, I was an ABSOLUTE MONSTER. I have a newfound respect for people who go on reality television shows and claim that factors like tiredness and hunger push them to the break of insanity. That’s exactly what happened to me. It was day six when things slowly started to turn around. Despite sleeping more in five days than I ever previously in my life and feeling wholeheartedly physically and mentally exhausted, the withdrawals were slowly decreasing. But then, I discovered a sugary alternative; I discovered chai lattes! Now by no means did this replace my beloved love for an ‘actual’ latte, but the warm fuzzy placebo-like effect of a hot drink did give me a kick, which at the time, I attributed to the sugar content. I continued this trend for four more days, slowly coming around to the idea that there is in fact life after coffee, until, a certain Instagram

out my autonomic nervous system. Because just like Tiff Hall predicted, the benefits have been truly amazing for both my mental and physical health. We live in such a fast society that it makes sense that I would over adrenalise my body like this and neglect its true needs. But if there is one thing that I have learnt from this experience, it is that you cannot put a price on happiness and health. As much as life is so short that I wish to do everything, it is also so short that it deserves to be enjoyed.

In her darkest hour young mum Ashleigh Smith was searching for a glimmer of hope. When she couldn’t find one, she decided to create one for herself and for others.

“I

’ve suffered more pain and sadness than I ever thought I could survive. My daughter Isla passed away when she was just two days old. My heart and my soul felt broken. I felt so alone.” Hospitals are familiar places for Dr Ashleigh Smith, a medical doctor in obstetrics. But as she left the hospital without her daughter in her arms, she was astounded at the lack of support from medical and mental health systems. “I found myself in an awfully familiar situation because I had personally managed pregnancy loss many times

through my own patients. So, this bizarre and ironic tragedy gives me a unique perspective. “I found that there is a gap in services for grieving mothers who feel especially isolated. As I navigate my own journey, I am inviting women in a similar situation to join me through The Glimmer Project which includes a podcast and three-week online program for managing grief after stillbirth or neonatal loss. “I have read so, so much on this topic. The program is evidence-based and I provide grief management tools and coping strategies, daily guided mindfulness meditations and also connection with a small group of other women who have suffered similar loss because peer support and sharing is typically lacking throughout this time. “The podcasts are free on the website and you can listen as I chat with experts who are also women who have

experienced pregnancy or newborn loss too.” Everyone’s experience is different but don’t let the darkness follow you. Find

a connection with me and know you are not alone. www.theglimmerproject.com

t Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba patients may well think they’re in a luxury hotel with a room service-style menu on offer. Support Services manager Leanne Kiepe said the menu had just been revamped to offer a greater variety of menu options. “We introduced the room servicestyle menu three years ago and it’s been an absolute winner with patients,” Leanne said. “Like in a hotel, patients call and order from more than 100 items on the menu and it’s then freshly prepared and delivered within 45 minutes to the patient’s room. “Food services recently scored a patient satisfaction score of 4.52 out of a possible score of 5 and early feedback on the new menu has also been really positive.” International flavours in curries, stir fries, pizza and pasta are included as options along with more traditional fare like roasts, casseroles, and grilled steak, chicken, and barramundi with a range of sides, plus salads, sandwiches, wraps, snacks, and desserts. Support Services coordinator Simon Whelan said the food services unit was a well-oiled machine with St Vincent’s the only hospital offering a room service model across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. “Food Services operates under a Food Safety Program to ensure all meals prepared, produced and delivered to our patients are provided in a safe environment meeting the Food Standards Code under Food Standards Australia & New Zealand to ensure we safely serve our most vulnerable

• Each year at St Vincent’s we produce 155,000 meal trays - if you lined them all up top to tail they would stretch from St Vincent’s Food Services right into the Centre Ring of the Toowoomba Showgrounds! • We go through 2.5 tonnes of fresh chicken, 2 tonnes of fresh barramundi, 4 tonnes of fresh potatoes and 3 tonnes of fresh carrots. • Patients can order their meals any time between 6.30am to 6.30pm. • Implementation of room service reduced wastage by around 13 per cent

population,” Simon said. “Our team comprises 41 staff including nine qualified chefs who produce the meals for patients each day. “To support the smooth production and running of food services we have a dedicated team of food service assistants who are managed by specially trained staff to ensure the requirements of patients who need specialised diets are catered for. “We have a strong working relationship with our allied health team of dietitians, speech pathologists and the nursing staff to ensure patient needs and requirements are met. “We source as much local produce as possible to support Darling Downs businesses and maintain freshness.”

Chef Jasmin Lara prepares fresh fruit salad for patients to enjoy.

Classic Skincare

“N

ow everyone can afford amazing results; younger, smoother, brighter skin.” How did Classic Skincare come about? After 14 years in the beauty business Kate recognised a gap in the skincare market. “I felt that the gap in skincare from active cosmeceutical skincare to supermarket brands needed to be filled with something that clients who are wanting to maintain their skin can use while still promoting skin

health” she said. “So I decided to create a range of quality, affordable skincare myself. I worked with a biochemist for 18 months to get the mix right which includes nutrient dense formulations with natural and active ingredients suitable for all skin types.” The Classic Skincare range includes luscious cleansers, moisturisers, exfoliants, masks, serum, antioxidant mist and eye cream. Then there’s the body range with wash, scrub and lotion.

By JAIME PROUTEN - @JAIMEKATEMUA It’s springtime in Toowoomba, which means carnival time, flower time and coming out of hibernation time!

EYES & BROWS To create eyes that pop we need to work with the colour and the shape of the eye. Let’s face it not everybody can pull off this look. But as an artist it is my job to find you a look that suits you individually and bring your best features forward. Firstly, you need a blank space of neutral colour, then start defining the crease with a neutral shade creating a shape that is even for both eyes. Holding a folded tissue at an angle against your outer eye and smudging or blending a darker shade will create a soft winged eyeshadow. I love this technique and this look. Adding a glitter pigment was super easy thanks to INGLOTS amazing Aquastic Liquid Eyeshadow. Add the loose glitter pigments before the liquid eyeshadow sets, so for this one I recommend doing it one eye at a time. For the high shine I added some Duraline (makeup mixing liquid) on the inner eyes before adding some pure glitter. Duraline is used for several things and I think everyone should have one in their makeup bag, it’s perfect for colour enhancement, longer wearing eyeshadow, it can also be mixed with gel liner or brow gel if they become too dry. The brows were filled with a brow powder just to fill in the gaps as our model had taken good care of her lash and brows thanks to Red Door Beauty Room Salon.

FACE & BASE I put down some Pink HD corrective primer over the top of a fresh cleanse and some Inglot day serum. You always notice how different your makeup looks and feels with a bit of love before applying your foundation. I applied a full coverage high definition foundation but applied lightly so it could still look very natural. Although this foundation is quite matte, thanks to our prep routine her skin looked very hydrated and luminous. We used a loose translucent

face powder as I didn’t want to alter the perfectly matched foundation and then I contoured with a matte bronzer and added some colour to the cheeks with blush. To finish we brushed on some subtle highlights to bring our her beautiful features.

LIPS Whether it’s a bold or neutral lip, hydrated lips are a must, at the beginning of the makeup application I applied our rich lip care tinted balm to prep for the lipstick then applied Colour Play lip liner followed by Lip Satin lipstick for an even longer wear. We chose to keep this look a little formal, but since it is Carnival of Flowers, I won’t say you can’t add bursts of colour in the inner eye, lipstick or eyeliners. All Key Products Are Inglot Freedom System E/S Shades 702* 377* 382*, Aquastic Liquid E/S Shade 16*, Pure Pigment E/S Shade 118*, Gel Liner 77*, Duraline, Day Serum, Spotlight Face Oil, Pink Hd Primer, Hd Full Coverage Foundation, Amc Cream Concealer, Loose Translucent Powder, Freedom System Matte Bronzer, Face Blush 33*, Iip Care Lipstick O2*, Colourplay Liner 315*, Lipsatin Lipstick 304*.

What’s your tattooing style?

Florals are for everyone, young, old, bright and dark people; but what does a tattoo artist have to say about such a diverse piece like flowers? says. “Florals are always a popular tattoo all year round.” It’s quite fitting that they are always on trend when we live in the Garden City, but you probably never realised just how diverse a floral tattoo could be. Mellisah told Style Magazine Toowoomba that a floral tattoo can go with just about anything, even build onto existing pieces to give them a whole new life. “Floral work can often be incorporated into other pieces to expand on them and complete or accentuate an otherwise simple tattoo,” she says. But flowers don’t just mean flowers, they can have a plethora of connotations. A common reason for flowers can be to remember those who have passed and, more often now than ever, birth flowers. “So many people get floral tattoos for a variety of reasons, sometimes it’s a family member’s favourite flower such as a carnation or rose. Some people get things like lavender for calm and serenity,” Mellisah says.

“I have noticed an increase in people getting birth flower tattoos for family members.” “More recently I have noticed an increase in people getting birth flower tattoos for family members. It’s a subtle way to represent your loved ones without names or words to convey their importance to you.” Right now,

Home visits are available.

Mellisah has been designing a piece from thigh to ribs for a mother wanting to represent each of her children, along with their Chinese zodiac. “So far I have done the year of the rat with Larkspur flowers,” she said, hoping to extend onto it once COVID starts to clear up more. For anyone thinking of getting a botanical artwork tattooed there are a few tips Mellissah has kindly shared for our readers:

1

DO YOUR RESEARCH there are many different styles and ways of doing floral tattoos, consider your placement, how it will wrap or distort on certain areas of the body.

2

RESEARCH STYLES there is a massive difference between neo-traditional, realism, linework and stylised flowers and be clear with your artist what style you want.

What was your first tattoo? My very first tattoo I got when I was 18, I decided on a line of stitches around my ankle which was inspired by Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. I always loved that no matter what happened to her, Sally could always stitch herself back together; that’s also how I got the name Miss Stitch. What was the last tattoo that you did? It was a beautiful custom black and grey realism skull piece. I have been doing more realism skull and gothic pieces of late and I have been enjoying them so much. Do you have an artist you look up to? The artist I look up to and admire the most would definitely have to be my boss and mentor Kym Hammond, whose strength, friendship and guidance has helped mold me into the person I am today.

3

CHOOSING YOUR ARTIST always research your artist before you make a booking to make sure they do the style you’re looking for. Make sure to provide references to your artist if you want something specific so that everyone’s experience is happy.

4

DON’T BE AFRAID TO GO BIG - tattoos of a good size will age the best and stand the test of time whereas smaller tattoos can blur as they age and lose some of their definition over time.

lowers from the store and the garden come and go, they wilt and die; but a way to keep your flowers thriving might be to actually get them tattooed on your body. There don’t seem to be stats supporting the increase of floral tattoos around the Carnival of Flowers, but Mellisah Johns from White Lion Custom Tattoos says flowers just seem to be popular all year round. “I usually do a few floral pieces every week,” Mellisah

When it comes to tattooing I specialise in black and grey and pop culture based tattoos. I do a bit of everything but as I am quite nerdy I really enjoy doing all things pop culture themed.

A

s restrictions becomes a thing of the past and we return to normal, so does our backlog of postponed events. Our event guru is Brooke Sleaford the founder and creative director of Moonlight Glamping & Events Pty Ltd and she has the low down on what events are going to become and the best way to host them. Although the resrictions are lifting, it seems that everyone has discovered that smaller is sometimes better. So if you’re still stumped on what to do for your next function, fear not Moonlight Glamping will come to the rescue!

WHAT IS MOONLIGHT GLAMPING & EVENTS CAPABLE OF? Our most popular events would be the garden party wedding. We can host any intimate style party or event up to 120 guests, however, most of our events are around 40 to 60 guests which we love. Our events range from weddings, garden party lounging parties or a sitdown luncheon, birthday parties (for any age), picnics and group family holidays. We can set up for just about any occasion... a romantic night away (perhaps a proposal or anniversary), girls’ weekend or a bridal ‘suite’ for your special day. We also set up guest ‘suites’ on your own property.

WHAT HAS BEEN ONE OF YOUR BEST EVENTS TO DATE? A 40th birthday glamping party. Our clients hired 10 camp sites on the Brunswick River. We called it the ‘Birthday Village’. We set up glamping tents for five of their closest family and friends. Each family had their own private site, fully furnished bell tent, outdoor table and chairs with a named sign-post on each site. The other hired sites were ‘communal areas’ which were set up with an outdoor movie cinema with rugs and cushions, a camp kitchen and a chillout tent filled with board games and books. What a great weekend to spend with family and friends for all ages.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO HOST AN EVENT? Spring time in Toowoomba is glorious! A spring lunch in a backyard garden would have to be our favourite type of event. Begin with a garden party with lounge setting and umbrellas followed by a sit-down lunch under a tree.

WHAT DO YOU AS THE EVENT GURU PREDICT FOR EVENTS IN THE FUTURE? More outdoor events with less people. I think more people are realising during the restrictions what really matters and how important close friends and family are. I read a meme recently ‘stop buying things you don’t need, to impress people you don’t even like’. Do we really need 150 guests at our wedding or would we have more fun with 40 of our nearest and dearest?

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR THEMES THAT YOUR CLIENTS ARE LOVING RIGHT NOW? An Australian-inspired theme tablescape says ‘there is no place like home’ to us. Styled here (opposite page) with our classic white plates, gold flatware, mixed glassware and our herringbone and white linens.

ANYTHING EXCITING HAPPENING SOON WITH MOONLIGHT GLAMPING & EVENTS? For those who have had to postpone your wedding date, we have very popular ‘Intimate Wedding Packages Guide’ for 20 guests. We have negotiated with two of our favourite venues in Toowoomba and lucky to secure discounts on venue hire. The guide allows you to choose from three wonderful locations (one being your own backyard). Our packages include a ceremony set up, garden party set up and flowers and sit-down lunch. Email us at info@moonlightevents.com.au for a copy of our guide!

WHY IS SPRING TIME THE BEST? Spring time allows for an event ANY time of day! Breakfast, brunch or a lunch holds beautiful weather! Oh and florals! Spring florals are a must for a spring breakfast or lunch.

O

f course Brooke and the team at Moonlight glamping will help in everyway possible when organising your tablescape, but for those who are still stumped on what step to take, here are Moonlight Glamping & Event’s first five!

1

Pick a theme. You don’t need to get too specific. Choose an inspired theme! For example, see our Australian inspired theme.

2

Choose your linens. They don’t need to be the same colour. Now layer... linen layers are key! If you are after a formal look white on white is always classic however, if you are after something more casual, mix your linen colours for example, a white tablecloth with herringbone napkins. Runners also add an extra layer of texture.

3

Next is tableware (plates, glasses, flatware). For a casual look don’t use bread and butter plates… instead stack your dinner and side plates.

4 5

Fill in the centre with flowers and candles.

Finish with drinks.

and prepare a medium to large baking dish or 6–12 ramekins (depending on their size) by generously rubbing with coconut oil, ghee, or butter. You can also skip the oil and just line the baking dish with baking paper for easy clean-up. 2. In a large bowl, lightly mix all the filling ingredients together. Check for sweetness and add a little more if desired. Then pour into the prepared baking dish or ramekins and set aside while making the crumble topping. CRUMBLE TOPPING METHOD

1. Place all the crumble ingredients in

a large bowl and mix well. Then evenly spoon (or use your hands) the crumble over the fruit mixture. 2. Loosely cover the crumble with baking paper and place in the oven. Bake, covered, for about 15 minutes, then uncover and continue baking for about 15 minutes longer. 3. Remove from oven and cool a little before serving. It’s great served warm with ice cream, non-dairy ice cream, sweetened cream, or yoghurt. It’s also wonderful served for breakfast with fresh fruit, berries, and yoghurt. The crumble will keep for 3–4 days refrigerated. With 2TG THAI RESTAURANT This Red Edge restaurant is the place for all spice lovers, flavour mongers, vegetarians, vegans and even picky eaters.

F

ound on James Street at Red Edge Shopping Centre, 2TG Thai Restaurant is the perfect destination for a cultured cuisine lunch or dinner, although there are plenty of take-away and delivery options too. 2TG Thai Restaurant is owned and run by Hong Leksombun and Omm Kasemputtikoom who are passionate about their food and love being able to bring the tastes of Thailand to Toowoomba. “At 2TG Thai, every dish is cooked with passion and the goal to keep an authentic Thai taste,” says Hong. We went along for a bit of a taste test, to see just how good 2TG Thai Restaurant is, and we weren’t disappointed. Everything from entrees to desert and even their specialty Thai Iced Tea had us salivating!

MENU AND DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Thai food in general is perfect for even the pickiest of eaters. With each meal made fresh to order, all diners get to decide what does, or doesn’t, go into their meal. All dishes have a choice of proteins from vegetarian, chicken, beef, pork to prawns V1 - TCHE01Z01ST

and duck. What’s more, the heat lovers can opt for a spicy portion from mild, medium to hot and, yes death! This is just its name; it won’t actually kill you. Those who prefer a less seasoned dish can go without all together. Plenty of vegetarian, and vegan options line the menu and with 2TG’s homemade sauces, some hardcore meat eaters might find themselves loving a tofu too! Gluten-free diners shouldn’t feel left out either, dishes like the Chicken Satay and Pad Thai are here for you.

MIXED ENTREE We wanted to try everything, and we could with their mixed entrée. The plate hosted a spring roll, curry puff, fish cake, crab roll and my favourite prawn in a blanket. I also feel it necessary to say, I’m not the biggest fan of prawns, but I could eat 2TG’s prawn in a blanket like popcorn. Hong even brought to my attention their home-made plum sauce, which is perfect for dipping literally everything into! Who knew plums could be so diverse? We also took a bite of their tender chargrilled pork skewers, which are good to start the night, especially when paired with a side of sticky-rice.

STAPLES We chose the cashew nut noodles from the staple’s menu, and you will go nuts for this popular favourite. With your choice of protein, the dish features stir fried flat rice noodle with chili jam sauce, egg, vegetables and cashews! The dishes carry a very full but even flavor, and with the cashew you find that textually gratifying crispy crunch.

CHEFS SPECIAL These are next level dishes, and such an experience to eat. We tried the Glass Noodle Prawns, stir fried glass noodles made of mung bean with prawns, vegetables and sauce. This dish just melts in your mouth, the soft juicy prawns and the glass noodles work so eloquently with the cooked but crunchy veges. The Beef Massaman was also an indulgence. The beef, coconut milk and potato-based meal is perfect when you’ve built up an appetite. Super filling and great with some rice.

THAI TEA TO MATCH Nothing compares to 2TG’s Iced Thai Tea. They offer a mouthwatering black,

milk and lemon iced tea. The milk tea is perfect for diners going for a more heavily spiced dish. Whereas the lemon iced tea is genuinely refreshing, as we come into the warmer months, these drinks should be right at the top of the list because we absolutely rate this!

DESSERT We dug into the popular Banana Roti for dessert. This popular Thai street food was the perfect closure for our dining experience. This fresh, flavourful dessert cleared our pallets leaving us fresh and sweeter. 2TGThai Restaurant Shop 6, Red Edge Centre 192-198 James St Toowoomba (07) 4600 1821 www.2tgthaitoowoomba.com.au FB @2TGThaiRestaurant

If you’re looking for some local flavours, head to Holland Wines near Crows Nest. It’s one of the many gems you’ll find in our very own High Country Hamlets.

B

ob and Robyn Holland carefully planned their retirement: a quiet life in the country. So a few years prior they bought acreage, put up a shed and planted some Shiraz, Chardonnay and Isabella grape vines – just for fun. However, when retirement came around the grapes had other ideas! The harvest was so impressive that Bob paid a winemaker to produce a few bottles for the family. “We got 800 bottles that year,” said Bob. “And I worked out if we drank two bottles a day for a year, we’d still have some left over so I thought we’d better sell some.” Lucky for us, that’s when Holland Wines was born. That was 15 years ago and Bob and

When spoken by a true aficionado, like Kyle Zevenbergen, the language of wine is nearly as intoxicating as the brew itself. He enthuses about grape varieties, terroir, experimental production techniques and provenance. It’s an indulgent and educational experience.

Bob Holland Robyn have done anything but retire! They’ve been working in the wine business, going to shows and markets or hosting tastings and events at the vineyard ever since. But they love it! “The best part is talking to people about their taste in wine,” Bob said. “I’ve learned a lot from having a chat over a glass of wine. “We started with just Shiraz and Chardonnay and now we have Rose, Sweet Red, Sweet White (the sweet wines go really well with spicy foods), a fortified Tawny and a sparkling Moscato.” Bob’s collection of 400 Arnott’s biscuit tins is an added drawcard for visitors to the High Country Hamlet region. But that’s a whole other story.

“I

’m passionate about food and wine and I spend a lot of time researching so I can give my customers extraordinary taste experiences,”Kyle said. “You won’t find our wines down at the local bottle shop or at any other restaurant in town. When a customer reads our wine list they often have lots of questions which is great because we can talk about

the wines and I can share some of my knowledge. “We source organic or biodynamic and sustainably produced wines that are often limited edition. We go for natural production methods and steer away from added yeast and sulphides. “I don’t always stock the same wines either. Sometimes the winemaker only makes a few dozen bottles and I’ll get one dozen and when it’s gone – that’s it. So the wine list is changing all the time.”

Toowoomba is leading the way when it comes to aviation training: First there was Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport, then the Qantas Pilot Academy and now Australia’s first Airbus A320 simulator, recently unveiled at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).

T

he A320 simulator is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and according to USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Geraldine Mackenzie, it represents a turning point for training. “The new system, along with the Boeing 737-800 simulator at Springfield, provides an unrivalled education experience for Aviation students,” she said. “The simulator is an investment for the university and also for the region. There is simply no better place to do an Aviation degree.” Head of USQ’s Aviation, Professor Paul Bates, said the new simulator and training program had evolved over years of research and development provided by manufacturer PacSim. “The simulator is actually the nose and flight deck of an actual Airbus A320

and features state-of the-art equipment and technology to recreate an entire flight with both normal and abnormal scenarios while completing all the necessary checks and procedures in a real flight,” he said. Director of PacSim, Iain Pero, said that in addition to training students the simulator was useful for creating meaningful connections within the aviation industry. “We have taken air traffic control staff through simulators in Sydney so that they can see what landing and take-off are like from a different perspective. It’s an extremely valuable experience for everyone involved.” USQ’s simulator has a busy term-time schedule and in the holidays it will provide opportunities for research and staff training.

Emily’s Story For first year aviation student, Emily Cook from Pittsworth, working with the simulator is absolutely fantastic and all part of her dream-come-true. “I attended a ‘Women in Aviation’ event when I was in high-school and immediately I sat in a cockpit I knew that I wanted to be a pilot - but I thought the training would be in Brisbane or Sydney,” she said.

“Growing up in Pittsworth I never could have imagined doing pilot training so close to home. This degree program at USQ is great for country kids and it’s also great to know that women can be pilots too. “The simulator is amazing because it gives me a taste of what my future will be like; what I’ll be doing for the rest of my life.” As for job prospects, Emily will graduate in three years, and is confident that aviation jobs will be in demand after COVID-19 disruptions.

A Toowoomba Grammar School teacher has received international acclaim for his research project about educating boys.

H

ead of Teaching and Learning, Mr Luke Rawle has been recognised by the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) for his research paper entitled “Boys and Their Voices”, with it rated as one of the top three Action Research projects in the world for 2020. In fact, the panel was so impressed with Mr Rawle’s work that he has been invited to be an IBSC Team Leader for Action Research which will see him assisting teachers worldwide with their research projects into educating boys. He will manage ten international projects every twenty-four months. “I’m very excited about this opportunity,” stated Mr Rawle. “It engages me in best practices for boys’ schools from all around the world and I will be exposed to other teachers who go above and beyond, I get the opportunity to reflect on their learning and teaching practices.” Action Research requires a teacher to become a researcher in their own classroom by investigating teaching practices or student learning. “A real benefit for me as a Team Leader is that I’m reading their work, engaging their research and generating new ideas that we can implement here at Toowoomba Grammar School.” This will in turn provide connections and academic advantages for both staff and students at Toowoomba Grammar School, cementing the School as a leader in boys’ education. But what of Mr Rawle’s ground-breaking study that set this opportunity in motion?

It was a very simple concept that proved extremely effective, students ‘teaching’ students. His Year 11 History students were tasked with tutoring his Year 8 History students in the specific skills of historical source analysis. Mr Rawle used interviews, questionnaires and video reflection to determine how this style of ‘peers teaching peers’ impacted the Year 11 students and if it improved their own skills and sense of confidence in historical source analysis. “I found it had a huge impact to both the Year 11 and Year 8 students,” said Mr Rawle. “It provided an educational environment of trust and competitiveness both of which encourages boys to do well and I believe there was a significant improvement in their academic results.” Mr Rawle said both age groups saw the tutoring as a ‘safe space’, they were more comfortable to make mistakes and to self-regulate when working with peers compared to adults. “As a result, it provided them a greater sense of where they were placed with their learning and targeted the specific areas they needed to improve to prepare for their upcoming assessment,” he said. Mr Rawle will present his paper and findings at the 2021 IBSC conference in Spain and at the Queensland History Teachers Association in the next few months. Although Mr Rawle’s research was focused on History, he is confident this ‘student teaching student’ strategy could be replicated in a number of other subject areas and he is keen to see it implemented in various classes at Toowoomba Grammar School to continue to ensure that “Boys and Their Voices” are heard.

If you’re going to grow herbs, you should use them. There are lots of culinary and medicinal uses of herbs but which ones should you grow in your garden for making teas and cocktails?

BORAGE

The blue flowers have a soft cucumber flavour and look great in cocktails such as pink gin and tonic or a traditional Pimms Cup. You can freeze the flowers in ice cubes to use later and make a soothing tea from fresh borage leaves.

MINT FAMILY

HERBAL TEA

You can make herbal tea from many herb varieties using fresh or dried leaves and flowers – you just need to experiment to see which you like best. For most herbal teas you can add the leaves (slightly crushed) or petals to a pot of hot water (off the boil) and let them steep for a few minutes to release their flavours. The longer you steep them, the stronger the flavour. Do strain them before you serve so you don’t find yourself with a mouthful of chewy herbs. When it comes to cocktails, you can use sweet herb flowers as garnish or muddle the leaves to release their flavours.

There are many different types of mint that you can use in a lovely soothing tea: chocolate, apple, ginger, lavender, lemon and of course good old common mint Menthe veridis which is also great for muddling in cocktails. For classic mint tea, use fresh or dried leaves from Peppermint Mentha piperita or Spearmint Mentha spicata.

OTHER SOOTHING TEAS INCLUDE:

Lemon Balm Melissa offinalis – use the leaves ; Chamomile Matricaria recutita – use the flowers; Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi, Ociumum tenuiflorum – use the leaves.

LAVENDER

Lavender has a beautiful soft fragrant flavour. You can add the petals to tea but the flowers can be chewy so it’s good to makes a lavender infusion with hot water – let the petals steep for a while and then strain. Keep the liquid to add to cocktails with gin or vodka, sweet wine and add to peppermint or iced teas. Use flower sprigs to decorate cocktails and champagne.

FLAVOURS:

Experiment with the herbs in your garden and try creating your own mixtures of citrus peel, mint, lemon grass, rose petals, lavender petals, sage leaves, ginger, fennel seeds and cinnamon. You can also add them to green tea and sweeten with honey.

THE SMARTEST WAY TO GET THE BEST FROM YOUR $25K GOVT STIMULUS PACKAGE..?

START WITH SMART WINDOWS THAT LET IN ONLY THE VIEW AND NOT THE HEAT OR COLD

L

ast month we talked about how to maximise the potential of the $25,000 HomeBuilder stimulus package — and what amazing benefits it could bring to your home — which for many will be their life’s most significant investment. When you have a home designed and built by Geoff Gibson Homes it will already be energy efficient through optimised orientation, maximised insulation to the complete ceiling area, insulating all the external walls and then the home is zoned correctly. It’s what we do. But there are many things you can do further to your home to add significantly to its overall energy efficiency, reduce its carbon footprint, and reduce it’s daily energy costs. Let’s start with one of the major areas that contribute to unwanted heat loss or gain — your windows. Ordinary windows fitted with standard glass could almost completely negate any other energy savings incorporated into your home because they represent the path of least resistance for heat transfer in summer and heat loss in winter. An investment here will pay for itself for the life of your home. Its not just the ‘smart glass’ on its own — and there are different levels of thermal insulation ability, from simple solar blocking efficiencies to double-glazing — but the entire smart glass window itself has superior sealing capabilities, preventing the costly leaking of air either way.

Increasing your home’s Thermal Mass is another major advance in keeping your home’s internal temperature more stable. The more ‘mass’ your house has throughout, the greater its ability (like a heat bank) to store, hold and evenly spread warmth throughout your home — so in winter it feels warmer and in summer, cooler. A sure way to add instant heat bank mass is to make selected internal walls concrete block or brick, rather than from timber studs with plaster sheeting. But adding PCM (Phase Change Materials) to your ceiling insulation also acts as a very efficient heat bank, and are particularly suitable for this climate. We introduced this in some detail in July’s STYLE last year. They’re cheaper and easier to include in your build than block walls, and can be added retrospectively. Look for this column There is another aspect to this: many home owners are in next month’s considering the cost-saving benefits of adding solar. By Style... we will combining both these elements — smart glass and PCMs, your continue digging need for solar as a cost saver will be significantly reduced. You deeper into what won’t actually need a big expensive system. Another saving!

‘sustainability’ means for your home.

Have you seen a “new” building in Queens Park? It’s a stylised replica of the old conservatory that brought the wonder of exotic plant species to the people of Toowoomba more than 100 years ago.

P

ublic conservatories – also known as greenhouses, glasshouses, orangeries or hot houses – were fashionable during the Victorian era as a way to connect people with nature. They usually housed exotic plant species that required a warm sheltered climate. If not for conservatories people wouldn’t get to see first-hand the many indoor plants that we take for granted today. The old Toowoomba Conservatory was a cherished landmark in Queens Park for around 50 years. Built in 1909 it cost just a few hundred pounds and was part of the local landscape and culture until the 1950s when it fell into ruin and was demolished. But hurrah for Toowoomba Regional

3 Retirement Trends & Real Estate Live Long & Prosper Healthier lifestyles and advances in medical care are increasing life expectancy rates, which means that we are likely to spend longer in retirement than previous generations. According to the latest figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, if you retire at 60 you could expect to spend well in excess of 20 years in retirement. This is far longer than what previous generations spent in retirement when life expectancy rates were much lower. Therefore, retirees are giving greater consideration to the lifestyle they want to lead in retirement and downsizing doesn’t have to mean compromising on the luxury, style and conveniences we have become accustomed to.

Cashing in Australia is one of the most expensive property markets in the world, especially in Sydney and Melbourne. Prices have held well in the Toowoomba Region and a continued trend is not only retiring and leaving the

family farm but you can also choose to downsize your home to free up some funds that were invested in a larger family home that may have become too big for you and or loved one to maintain. I have assisted an increasing number of clients to privately sell their homes and assist with the purchase of a smaller and more manageable residence that perfectly suits their needs. By freeing up the equity in their home my clients were able to consider planning a holiday, upgrading the car or having a little surplus cash to ease the day to day expenses.

Co-Living or Downsizing Many have asked, how has COVID-19 affected the property market locally? Personally, I have seen an increasing trend of co-living with an older

parent or parents. Recently, I have sold many homes that offer either dual living ability or a fifth bedroom with most inspections involving families who want either mum/dad or both parents living with them. We never dreamed that there would be boarder closures or even restrictions on travel to just the immediate neighbourhood and many are considering their family and the distance between our loved ones, who are most at risk.

New Trends We also have millennials on the move leaving major city lifestyles and instead choosing open spaces, work from home options and returning closer to families. Combine this with Toowoomba’s affordable housing options and current government incentives, well let’s just watch this space. Ringsfield House Nanango With its elegant rooms, bay windows, wide verandas and colourful cottage gardens, Ringsfield House is one of our favourite historic homes in the South Burnett Region.

B

uilt in 1908 for Mr and Mrs James William Davies Graham (a government land agent), Ringsfield is typical of its designer, noted Queensland Architect, Robin Dods. From 1908 till 1942 it was the private home of the Graham and Sullivan families. In 1942, the house became the Ringsfield Maternity Hospital which brought around 4000 babies into the world.

From 1973 to 1992 the house was occupied as a Lifeline refuge and then Nanango Shire Council determined that Ringsfield should be restored as a museum and historical centre. The Ringsfield historic precinct also features a replica coach house, a cream shed, a slab shepherd’s hut, the town’s original Presbyterian Church and Nanango’s oldest surviving building the State School built in 1866.

These days, Ringsfield House operates privately as a cafe, restaurant, museum and venue for weddings, functions and special occasions. You can wander through the beautifully decorated rooms and enjoy a variety of exhibits including fashion, first aid and education from a bygone era. You can also sit out on the veranda and enjoy a quiet cuppa as you take in extensive cottage garden views.

Toowoomba’s most scenic By ALLY MARTELL I loved cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail in New Zealand – but that was a year ago and I’ve been looking for a local scenic cycling route ever since. Finally, I think I’ve found it!

T

ake the back roads from Hampton to Crows Nest via the Pechey State Forest and you’ll experience fresh air with fragrant pine forests, wildflowers, birdsong, sweeping views and picturesque farms: and hardly any cars! The road can be a little rough in spots and boggy after rain so you’ll need a mountain bike for this ride. Start at Munro Street off the New England Highway at Hampton then turn left into McMullen Road, continue on to Misty Mountain Road, turn right into Grapetree Road and then follow that until you cross the New England

Highway and the road turns into Perseverence Dam Road which will take you into Dale Street, The Esplanade and Esk Street at Crows Nest. The journey is 15km each way which will take one to two hours depending on your pace and whether or not you have an Ebike! There are also a couple of challenging hills – but you want that don’t you? You should definitely stop for coffee in Crows Nest either at The Nest or The Park Restaurant and Cafe. Perhaps even a gastronomic lunch at The Old Crow pub.

Please visit www.hqplantations.com.au before you head out on this ride and note:

The inspirational Ben Fitch I first discovered the scenic route around Pechey State Forest by reading about a champion cyclist called Ben Fitch. The Fitch family is huge in Crows Nest. Our hero, Benjamin, was born in 1887 to John and Karolina Fitch (nee Puschmann). He was one of John Fitch’s 14 children. Ben was a renowned cyclist in his day, and according to Fitch family historian Jeaniene Wakefield he won more than 100 races; some as far away as Victoria. He even entered the famous Melbourne to Warnambool Race in 1910.

He used to train for his cycling events around Pechey State Forest and between Hampton and Geham. However, Ben’s cycling career ended in January, 1916 when he enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces as a member of the 41st Battalion. He was wounded in action in France; shot in the foot and groin resulting in the removal of his right testicle. Ben’s injuries stopped him from cycling but they didn’t stop him from falling in love with a young lady while convalescing in England. Ben and Nellie Bright were married

in 1918 and later moved to Crows Nest to live and raise their family. Ben worked as a house painter in the area and passed away in 1977 at the age of 90. Both he and Nellie are buried in the Crows Nest Cemetery. Ben Fitch’s cycling feats continue to be an inspiration and his training routes around the region are affectionately known as “Fitch’s Feats”. Having ridden these routes on a fabulous new Merida EBike, I am in awe of Ben on his 1900s bike without gears!

► Responsible mountain bike riding is encouraged ► Permits are required for groups of 15 or more riders You must comply with all forest and workplace signage even if you see no current activity ► For your safety, never enter forest operations areas ► Keep away from recently burnt areas ► Please stay on formed roads Keep left – these are public roads and normal road rules apply (even for cyclists) ► Be alert for heavy vehicle traffic and other recreation uses Please don’t litter ► Camping and campfires are not permitted ► Consider how you will communicate in the event of an incident (in areas with poor mobile phone reception)

– and you don’t want to get to your destination to discover most businesses aren’t trading or that most eateries are closed. At the very least, be prepared for reduced trading hours and bring along some food options that you can rustle up in the hotel room at short notice. Finally, pack appropriately for the current climate. No, we’re not talking weather; we mean packing extra handsanitizer, a mask or two, even some wet wipes. Also remember to social distance wherever you go, and keep washing those hands! And don’t forget to pack your sense of fun as well – remember, having a holiday in these times might be strange and unusual, but it’s also the perfect opportunity to give your mind and emotions a break from the weird year that is 2020.

irstly, unless you have an extra two weeks up your sleeve for quarantine, best to stay holidaying within the Sunshine State. Yes, it’s tough to miss out on that trip you planned to Tasmania for this year, and to not see your family members that live interstate – but trust us, it will be worth it in the long run. But let’s be honest – Queensland has a lot going for it! Use this opportunity to go somewhere in your home state that you’ve never seen, or somewhere more obscure or remote – something that’s not the stereotypical holiday destination. Not only will you be seeing something new, but you’ll be helping the economy of the small, local towns that are struggling at the moment. Next, do your research before you book any accommodation or time off. While most of Queensland is trading as usual now, some places are still closed

“Family comes first,

BUT THE GYM IS OUR FAMILY TOO” In the last six months, Courtney and Josh have had their whole world flipped, and then flipped again. Thanks to their motivation and strength as a family, things are starting to make sense. By KATHERINE SAMPSON

R

ight now Courtney James (21) and Josh Cooper (26) are the epitome of the perfect family, they are not only beautiful people, but a beautiful family, with a beautiful daughter and an amazing family run gym that all their members love; but it wasn’t too long ago their lives were flipped upside down. Josh and Courtney weren’t always a couple, they started out in separate relationships, but when these began to fall apart, they turned to each other for consolidation and found new love. Not six months into their relationship Courtney found herself pregnant. Although they didn’t think they were ready to start a family, Courtney and Josh chose to go ahead with the pregnancy. The pair cried happy tears, and tears of pain as Courtney began suffering

medical hardships. Throughout the pregnancy she suffered from Hyperemesis gravidarum, a sickness which causes sever morningsickness, dizziness and fainting spells. “I lost 7kg in hospital, I was bed bound, I couldn’t keep water down and I obviously couldn’t go to work, so, our double income became one overnight,” says Courtney. Months went by, Courtney finally went into labour at 41.5 weeks and gave birth to their daughter Blake Bailey Cooper. “When Blake came along, we grew up instantly and we became better people,” says Courtney. As Courtney became a full-time mum, Josh had moved on as a trainer at F45 to head trainer and then studio manager all whilst the current studio manager and owner began to let go of the gym.

Members loved the gym as Josh ran it morning and night, he was the face, the smile and the skill. So, in November 2019, negotiations began to sell the gym, but no one wanted to take it on without Josh. With the gym in its current state, the options were buying the gym or leaving it altogether as it went under. Eventually, they made the decision to purchase the gym going halves with a silent partner who had faith Josh could return the gym to its former glory. On February 14, 2020 settlement day arrived and F45 was handed over to Josh and Courtney as owners and a

month before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation. The pair worked hard with what they had, their membership numbers only just covering the bills. “When COVID-19 hit we had to close down, but we knew it was going to be hard on our members, so with an uncertain future we cancelled everyone’s memberships to get through the hardship,” they said. In its place they brought in a temporary

membership for those who wanted to continue, with Josh hosting ‘at home’ workouts through Zoom. These temporary memberships were the lifeline their gym needed to cover the ongoing costs. “We had two options: we could be sad and frustrated that the gym we just bought had to shut its doors, or we could make the most of it,” they said. So, Courtney and Josh began renovating, giving the gym life and functionality. From self-renovating the bathrooms to updating all the equipment such as new kettle bells, sandbags and weights. They had an equipment room built and even put in a creche so mums and dads could work out without needing to leave their children elsewhere. In the peak of their triumphs and progress being made, Courtney and Josh found themselves pregnant once again. In May, they discovered they were pregnant with twins. But, with all their joy came heartbreak as they discovered only one heartbeat. “We lost one twin and were told that it would eventually pass as the second baby grew.

“Instead of grieving our loss we celebrated what we still had,” Courtney says.

“Instead of grieving our loss we celebrated what we still had.” At 10 weeks, Courtney began miscarrying, Josh took her into the hospital for caution. Josh and Courtney were told there was no longer a heartbeat at all as the doctors confirmed a second miscarriage. A hardship neither pair had ever imagined they would go through in already one of the hardest times in their lives. On June 6, the doors at F45 Toowoomba Central re-opened. So, Josh and Courtney pushed on, welcoming all the members they could and more back to their now family-run gym. Courtney’s younger sister joined through a schoolbased apprentice as a trainer and Blake became a sister to everyone’s children who came through the creche. “With such an unforeseeable future we axed the lock-in contracts, it was too much, and we held a grand re-opening too. “We wanted everyone to know F45 Toowoomba Central is back, it’s new, it’s better, it’s our family and a family for our members.”

W

ith the spectre of the coronavirus pandemic looming large over this year, the ghosts of the 2019 droughts and fires seem so far away. Yet it only takes a moment for us to recall the scenes of the drought and the ominous and pervasive smell of bushfire smoke. On the Darling Downs, the drought was so dire that there was a wave of water theft, and there were stories of tankers visiting dams to bring water to thirsty farms and towns by day, and trucks returning with their lights off at night. Scientists agree that man-made climate change was a key factor in exacerbating last year’s drought and creating the perfect conditions for the destructive fires that followed. Simply

put, climate change affects the frequency and intensity of rainfall, droughts, and heatwaves, with the events of last year a perfect example of how these conditions can result in chain reactions. It is the combined effect of successive disasters that makes it so difficult for communities to recover, made worse by the Australian government’s “pathetic” record on climate action, an “international embarrassment”. So, why still be optimistic? This year’s pandemic is devastating, and whilst Queensland has largely escaped unscathed compared to the rest of the world, the economic impacts have not been small. It will take time for Australia to recover from these twin disasters, but there is a solution being promoted around the world; a green

recovery. A green recovery refers to the investment of pandemic recovery funds into building a sustainable, circular economy, and ensuring a just transition to a renewable energy future. To create an economy driven by wellbeing instead

of profit. In an interview with The Guardian on the topic of a green recovery, Professor Mark Howden, director of the Climate Change Institute at the Australian National University stated: “If we could design activities that

ickers on the Downs is a labour of love for Tony – after he retired, he found he still wanted something to occupy his time and more or less fell into the world of picking. It started small, exclusively on social media, but after about six months Tony moved the business into its first brick-and-mortar store. “We had a shop at 7 Russell St for about 12 months but it was too small,” Tony explains. The current store at 42 Neil St – across from Toowoomba Bus Station – is about three times the size of the old store, and it is certainly a treasure trove for the discretionary buyer. There’s gorgeous furniture pieces, from a lush classy daybed to solid wood dining set and ornate sideboards, all cleaned up and polished before being placed on the selling floor. “I have a guy who polishes up some items, another one I got to detail the motorbikes, while for other pieces we fix them up ourselves,” Tony says. Some items will only require a good wood polish, while other items might need a new set of hinges or replacement cabinet door – but nothing is sold in a poor state. “We’re a true business and buy all our picks, so we’ve got the good stuff,” Tony says. For 10 days at a time, Pickers on the Downs takes to the road for ‘picker journeys’: travelling from Toowoomba to Tasmania, for example, finding quality secondhand goods along the way. “Our next trip will be from Toowoomba to South Australia,” Tony adds. As well as the furniture and motorbikes, Pickers on the Downs also has a sizable record collection, teddy bears, porcelain dolls, Wedgewood side plates, tea sets and

fine china, even some rare comics and artworks. From time-totime you’ll also find more obscure items like an old-style hoof pick, hanging glass wine decanter, or gas lantern straight from the World War II era. There’s also currently a well-equipped caravan out the back and even a BMW for sale! With a tagline of ‘buy, swap, trade, sell’ there’s also finance and trade options for that item you desperately want but can’t afford right now. “We source Australiawide, so if we haven’t got it we’ll still have fun trying to find it,” Tony says. You can visit the store 10am to 4pm weekdays and 10am to around 1pm on Saturdays, or check out their Facebook page @PickersOnTheDowns PICKERS ON THE DOWNS 42 NEIL STREET, TOOWOOMBA CITY WWW.PICKERSONTHEDOWNS.COM.AU 0414 873 903

By CATHERINE CHEEK - KENNEDY SPANNER LAWYERS Before COVID-19 cancelled travel, there were other uncontrollable threats to anticipated holidays.

O

n April 24, 2020, the High Court of Australia decided the class action case of Moore v Scenic Tours Pty Ltd in a way that will help disappointed and angry travellers in future. It highlighted protections that exist for would-be travellers and recognised that disappointment and distress from a failed, long-anticipated-holiday is real, can be compensated and is not affected by laws limiting recovery for personal injuries in New South Wales. Mr Moore booked a holiday cruise tour a year in advance for himself and his wife. The cruise included cruising along part of Rhine, Main and Danube rivers over two weeks. This suited Mr Moore, because, for health reasons, he wanted

a holiday that did not involve repeated unpacking and lengthy periods of time sitting down. Due to flooding on the Rhine and Main, only three days of the fortnight was spent cruising, with the Moores spending 10 days on a bus and having at least two changes of ship. It was not the holiday the Moores booked and paid for. The trial judge awarded Mr Moore $10,990.00 for loss of value and $2,000.00 for disappointment and distress. Even though Mr Moore claimed damages under Commonwealth law, it was possible that NSW law could have prevented Mr Moore being compensated for his less-than-bargained-for holiday if his disappointment and distress were personal injuries.

Catherine Cheek Special Counsel Kennedy Spanner Lawyers

Mr Moore’s claim was not the first time that the law has recognised that disappointed holiday-makers are able to recover damages. But this decision decided that distress and disappointment caused by a breach of contract “to provide a pleasant and relaxed vacation” is not a personal injury claim but a “normal, rational reaction for an

unimpaired mind”. Because it is not a claim for personal injury, personal injury law limitations in NSW did not affect his claim. This decision is good news for travellers who have had changes to their holidays imposed on them by tour operators.

By ROSLYN BURTON – PRINCIPAL THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE I was reading an article recently about the number of tenants that are “allowed” in a rental property and the story raised an issue we sometimes face at The Real Estate People.

I

’ve said many a time that, as a property manager, you never take sides. You’re an advocate for the tenant AND the landlord at the same time and often that’s a difficult balancing act. So today, please forgive me if I’m leaning a little closer to the landlord’s perspective. Honouring the tenancy agreement is something we take very seriously at the office because it’s how you accurately monitor the number of people in a rental property (because the document lists all the occupants).

It lets the landlord know that four families aren’t living in their two-bed unit. This also comes back to the number safely allowed to reside at the property. I completely understand how a tenant might think it’s no big deal to allow someone to share their unit or home “just for a while” and if they’re added on the lease as an approved occupant then it’s no problem, but if they’re there undocumented then that’s a big no, no. The first question is easily the most important – why isn’t the person on the lease? Do they have a bad rental history or a reason they do not want a documented address? Wear and tear on a property can also be attributed to the number of occupants, so that is important to stay on top of as well.

Thankfully, because of our stringent quarterly inspection regimen, we rarely have an undocumented tenant slip through the cracks. But, if people are going to deliberately mislead their management agency, it can happen. But do so at your peril. What tenants should always remember is that it’s their name on the lease and

they are responsible for any damage caused by ‘nameless’ residents. You mightn’t have punched that hole in the wall or broken that light fixture, but you’ll be reaching into your pocket to fix the problem. Be open and honest with your property manager and you’ll enjoy a hassle-free rental experience.

We say what we do… and we do what we say

At The Real Estate People, we consider our word is our bond and we understand how clear communication and following through on promises is an integral part of good customer service. S

mart watches are the way of the future, and now more than ever they’re becoming a major article of fashion and technological necessity. There are a few reasons why the smart watch is taking over, and you probably haven’t even thought of them. It can be a rude motion to check your phone while in conversation with somebody, but with a smart watch it’s as simple as a glance at your wrist, and a completely ordinary natural action. Of course since Apple and Samsung began pioneering the smart watches, there was very little time before other major smartwatch manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon to make making and answering phone calls seamless and simple, and even texting as an option by either talking into the device or typing out messages letter by letter. Again, another win for social etiquette, keeping your disruptive phones away while a insignificant screen on your wrist does the rest. Fitness is where Fitbit and Garmin really found their market, designed specifically for those wanting to count their steps and really understand what their body was doing, they revamped the pedometer into a smart watch that tells time, answers calls, counts steps, measures heart rate and even allows music syncing so that you don’t need to carry a Walkman size mobile on your afternoon run. Not to mention watches are stylish. There’s a reason Rolex, Cartier, Armani and Montblanc watches are so highly sought after, their beauty and construction is second to none. So, to have that same chic, professional look with all the technology benefits – it’s not a hard question as to what you should be wearing. Harvey Norman has a huge range of smart watches from Apple and Samsung to Fitbit and Garmin. There’s an option for every member of the family, health monitors and GPS trackers, it’s a wonder why we all don’t wear them already?

Style Artist chats to

Darren White

Tell us a little about yourself… I am based in Peregian Beach, Queensland. Describe your style? Loose, Light, Calm, Free, Abstract Landscapes. What inspires you? In the last 10 years, I have become really aware of and fascinated by the way humans interact with and impact nature, mostly among coastal fringes. The development of these areas can sometimes be seen as a negative. But, with time, these feelings can turn to an appreciation of the many eras that these buildings span and represent. My artworks often speak to these emotions, where the ocean disperses its energy onto a city edge. I draw upon these memories of ‘place’ and feelings of nostalgia to create works that hopefully brings a sense of calm. What interests me most about memories is that details are stripped back when we recall something, and instead, we allow ourselves to be guided by the feelings we felt at a particular moment. The tones and colours I use draw inspiration from the idea that a ‘grey’ architectural plane is actually also reflecting the colours, however subtle, from the surrounding environment. When starting a painting, I allow the process to guide my mind and eventually I will know what memory I should be drawing from. It really is the love of the process that keeps me coming back and creates that feeling of needing to paint. When did you start painting? Growing up in Raglan, New Zealand instils a passion for the arts as everyone around you doing art. As a child I would enter art competitions. In one competition, I won a BMX that was made in the style I had painted, and I think from there I was pretty hooked. Influences on your painting? Maybe subconsciously influenced by design psychology. I like the idea of bringing more lightness into people’s lives. There is so much darkness and negativity in the world. Highlights of your artistic life? Constantly being told that my work is very identifiable as my work. What do you like about Toowoomba? Grammar Art Show. It’s a good excuse to visit and explore the Toowoomba area.

mily Richardson’s favourite flower is the poppy, she loves how they bloom and their wild nature. She is the owner and creator of Toowoomba’s Ruby Lane Flower Co. In an ordinary year Emily hosts flower arranging classes on the regular, and since it’s spring - we’ve managed to gather some knowledge to share for all you flower lovers who have been missing out. If you want to find out more about flower arrangements by Emily check out her website rubylaneflowerco.com.

Do you need the fancy flowers to make beautiful bouquets? I’m big on foraging and using what you have. I’ve pulled over on highways to pick some pampas grass, beautiful wattle or just some interesting looking grasses! These points of difference are what makes an arrangement truly unique

What should you avoid?

and beautiful. Don’t worry if it’s classified as a weed in your garden, because inside it can look beautiful. For my own wedding I made my bridesmaid bouquets only out of greenery! I love the way different foliages look together, if they’re in a similar colour. I try to only choose 2-4 different types so it doesn’t get too messy.

I work solely with cut flowers that are harvested for being able to last. You’ll notice with a lot of flowers that look great in the garden (camellias or hibiscus) that they’ll quickly wilt and won’t last long term in an arrangement. Some mistakes I see when running my workshops is putting long stems in first and hoping for the best. I like to build up from the base at the very opening of the vase. Another key tip is to cut the stems on an angle so they see more water

How can colour play a part in flower arranging? I work a lot with colour to ensure an arrangement looks natural, either working in a monochromatic colour scheme or only going one colour over on the colour wheel. For example if you wanted pink to be your main colour you could go into some peaches and oranges, or you could go the other way for magentas and purples. Try not to get too many contrasting colours as it quickly looks staged.

the vessel to help hold stems in place. This is where it’s easier to choose a ceramic or terracotta pot that you can’t see through.

What are the rules when it comes to the vase? Any vase or household item can be a great vessel for holding flowers. If you like it and it’s interesting use it! The narrower the neck the easier it will be to arrange flowers where you want them, but you can use chicken wire or a flower frog to go at the bottom of

What flowers last all year long and look great in a bouquet? Roses, snapdragons, disbud chrysanthemums can all be found pretty readily and cheaply at your local flower market. Mix in some foraged foliage and it’s super easy to ensure you’ll always have fresh blooms in the house.

JUDITH, 30

ZANNA, 23

Hi Catherine, In January this year I was sexually assaulted, it was a difficult situation for me to process and at the time I didn’t speak up in fear of what would happen to the perpetrator, yes the perpetrator and not myself. I think I’m now ready to talk openly about the incident and report it to the necessary authorities, but I’ve had nightmares about retaliations from doing this. I’m not sure if it’s the right time to speak up.

Dear Catherine, While COVID-19 and its restrictions were in full swing I got myself a new job. Will this provide stability or should I have stuck out my old one?

Hi Judith, Firstly, I want to say sorry for what happened to you and secondly being brave enough to send this email to me. I am seeing Archangel Michael and Archangel Gabriel are with you helping you to make this decision. This is about you and standing in your power for it is time to take your power back from this person. Justice will be served but only if you have the courage to speak up. What happened to you didn’t go unnoticed by those in spirit and they are encouraging you to tell your story as there are more women out there that are afraid to speak up. I feel you are this spokesperson for all those that are hiding out of fear. Do not be afraid to tell others as I feel you need to get this out in the open to help, not only you, but other women to be brave and speak their truth. This is your choice Judith in the end but this is what came through for you. I feel you are courageous and call upon your guides, angels, those in spirit to help you through this. Sometimes things happen to people for a reason and sometimes we may not know why. Tell your story, so others will rise up out of their own fear and stand up for what they believe is right and true. I’m seeing a grandmother around you helping you also to make the right decision for you. I see her hugging you and know that your nightmares are your fears coming to the surface. I also feel that this has happened to you before in a past life and you spoke up. There were repercussions from speaking up in that lifetime which is why you are hesitant to say anything now. I am also getting it happened again in another lifetime where you were too scared to say anything. It’s up to you Judith but do what is right for you and what you feel is right in your heart. you will do well. Don’t be afraid of stepping outside the box and spreading your wings more.

Hi Zanna, I feel you will be in this new job for some time. Years I am hearing until it is time for you to move on. I feel travelling overseas is on the cards for you but not until, of course, the COVID is clear. Are you an artist as I feel you’re creative in some way. Use your talents and gifts as this will take you further into doing something you love. They are showing me a camera in your hands as I feel you would be good at this. I keep hearing use your talents love. I feel you are gifted in the way you see things in a positive way. It’s like you see nature or people differently and by using a camera you would capture a photograph that tells a story, if you know what I mean. I am really getting a positive vibe on this but in the end it is up to you. I am feeling your guides are gently and lovingly steering you in this direction. I hope all goes well for you.

DOROTHY, 69 Dear Catherine, My mother has passed away, and my dad. I would like to know if my mum is going okay. My step-dad is living in their home still, but his health is not good. I am happy living in our home of 47 years with my husband, we have a son who has 2 children and a daughter who is married. Can you see what my future holds for me? I’m unable to volunteer at the moment but I do enjoy the work I do at the Toowoomba Hospice. Hi Dorothy, When I read your mother passed away I got hit with goose bumps. She is here and wants you to know that she is fine and happy on the other side. She is saying that she has come numerous times to visit you and she is telling me that you feel goose bumps too when she is around. Especially on the head like a spider is crawling on it. She is saying it’s not a spider, it is her touching you. She has never stopped loving you

Hi Jess, I am getting there is a lack of self love and worth within you. When you see how amazing you truly are that will reflect the type of people that you attract in your life. Sometimes friends come and go but those that grow with you and you feel with all your heart that they are true friends then they will stay. Those that are not true to you will slip away but I feel you’re quite gifted on a spiritual level and you already know who these people are. Look at yourself in the mirror and see you with love. Not judgement or criticism but through loving eyes. Be true to you and ask yourself are your friends on the same page. I do see a couple of your friends falling away but they will be replaced with new friends who will remain beside you for a long time. Are you drinking enough water? I am also getting to find someone who will start walking with you and I feel your energy levels coming in again. Love you, Jess. All of you!! Your angels and guides see you as such a beautiful person and they want you to know that they love you.
