TRY DUCKING INTO LITTLE TOWNSHIPS
On your adventures of visiting little townships, be sure to include Bell, between Toowoomba and Chinchilla, on the Bunya Highway. A sweet, sleepy little township with a warm feel, Bell is a great place to base yourself, with the Bunya Mountains and the majestic Jimbour House just a short drive away. Bell Tourist Park offers cabins, caravan sites and camping and also has drive through grassed sites. In town, you can visit the beautiful Catholic Church and Church Gardens, Popey’s Shed, full of old engines or the Railway Museum. During your stay, why not enjoy a Devonshire tea at the Bell Information Centre and Gallery’s Bluebells Coffee Shop or pop into Pips “n” Cherries, a renowned local business offering a country style breakfast and lunch or just coffee and cake.

SURPRISES OFF THE BEATEN TRACK BOWENVILLE
Bowenville is a town in the Toowoomba region, just off the Warrego Hwy and about fifteen minutes’ drive to Jondaryan and twenty-five minutes from Dalby.
For visitors, Bowenville offers free camping at the reserve, which is on the banks of the Oakey Creek about 5 kms from the township. The area is grassed, with great views and plenty of space for any size set-up. The grounds and amenities are well maintained, and the reserve is level ground. While in Bowenville make sure you do take time to drop into Meadowbank Gardens & Cafe - a hidden gem for morning/afternoon teas and lunch. To get away for a bit of country air but still be close to bigger towns and services, Bowenville is a pretty good choice. Visitors to the area may like to drop in to the Woolshed at Jondaryan, which started as an historic museum but nowadays it has grown in to a very well-known major venue and holds events such as the Jackie Howe Festival of the Golden Shears and the Great Aussie Barbecue. The famous building has been listed by the National Trust and the museum section still houses an impressive collection of shearing memorabilia. The small township also has a pub, which offers great counter lunches and teas and genuinely friendly owners. The Cobb & Co. Roadhouse, a Caltex service station, is on the Warrego Hwy and offers cheap fuel and a good meal and the kitchen is open til 8 pm every day.

The Western Downs
Just two and a half hours’ drive west of Brisbane and an easy three hours from the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, the Western Downs combines the charm of country living with the ease of access to metropolitan centres. It’s a rare mix.
Many people are discovering the combination of good professional opportunities and a great lifestyle, with our population continuing to grow, currently sitting at almost 34,000 in an area that covers the size of Switzerland.
With many positives things going for us here on the Western Downs, one of our key strengths is a resilient and diverse economy supported by a skilled workforce and thriving jobs market.
As the energy capital of Australia, we continue to attract national interest for our wide open plains and abundance of sunshine. Coal, gas, ethanol, wind and solar energy generation form the cornerstone of our economy, reinforced by our traditional agriculture, intensive agriculture and manufacturing industries.
But we’re not all solar and sorghum on the Western Downs. From camel racing in Tara to watermelon skiing in Chinchilla, our region has a reputation for a strong cultural scene, stunning natural beauty and parklands and for hosting fantastic events. The newest addition to our lineup, the Big Skies Festival, celebrates all that makes us great — attracting visitors from across Australia to enjoy all our region has to offer. The Western Downs - an affordable place for families to live, work, prosper and play.

A DINERS DELIGHT Some 500kms west of Brisbane lies the jewel of the Maranoa Region. Incorporated in 1867, Roma sits in one of the most fertile regions of South West Queensland on the slopes of the Great Dividing Range. In addition to its vibrant agricultural industry Roma’s energy industry is a major contributor to local employment, and as this has expanded so too have cafes, bars and other civic attractions flourished to cater to its booming population. More than half of the town is dedicated to the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector, and so many of Roma’s attractions have developed around these features. Perhaps chief amongst them are the largest cattle sale-yards in the Southern Hemisphere, with hundreds of thousands of heads of cattle passing through each year. For those inclined towards more relaxed pastimes, Roma is also home to Queensland’s oldest winery. Renowned for both its table and fortified wines, Romavilla Winery was established in 1863 and has not missed a vintage since. Just 90 minutes north, the Carnarvon Ranges offer an idyllic chance to wander through the ecological sights and sounds the area has to offer.
Roma offers fantastic outdoor facilities for those wanting to dine in the great outdoors.

ST GEORGE HAS IT ALL!
St George is a fantastic place to stop over and put your feet up beside the banks of the Balonne River. A pretty town with a great country feel. St George is clean, tidy and has a terrific sealed pathway that meanders along the river and is home to an abundant array of birdlife. If you’re inclined, you could utilise the exercise stations scattered along the pathway and enjoy the country air filling your lungs. The fishing is pretty good too if you care to wet a line! Don’t worry though, if you don’t have any luck with the rod, you’re not going to starve. St George has a variety of dining choices and being the outback, you’ll be greeted
with a smile and great service. From great pub grub, found at the Australian Hotel Motel every day for lunch and dinner, to something a little more intimate, such as the River’s Restaurant open for dinner from Monday to Saturday. And that’s just to
name a few – then there is the bakery, the cafes, a Chinese restaurant, coffee shops, a few more pubs, and the list goes on. So do yourself a favour and walk the walk and talk the talk – you’re sure to find something that appeals to your palate.
