SKIN IN THE GAME How to be camera ready for photos that will last a lifetime NATALIE LEIS

W

edding bells are ringing because you have found that someone special, or you have just completed your final assessment and are now preparing for your graduation. Your dress is sorted, all the planning prep is going along smoothly for your special day, it’s now time to get your skin camera ready. Whether you are super organised with months to go, or you are more of a last-minute girl and the event is only a couple of weeks away, the team at Ella Baché have some pro tips to get you looking your very best. SEE YOUR SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL Facials are like going to the gym for your skin because, just like your figure, you want your skin glowing and in tip-top shape. If time is on your side your beauty therapist will plan a facial regime or if time is of the essence she will have a quick fix solution for you. We have a range of high performance facials using the latest technology to boost collagen and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, or a refining microdermabrasion facial to reduce pores and brighten your complexion, or maybe something as simple as a deep cleansing facial to detox your skin. Facials will improve your complexion providing the perfect canvas for the perfect make-up. BROWS Your brows provide the framing for your eyes and face. Whether you want a full and natural look or a more sculptured shape, start with a professional brow shape a couple of months out, then maintain with regular appointments in the lead up to achieve the perfect brow. Pro tip: Combine with a brow tint and lash tint for a more polished finished look. LASH EXTENSIONS Lash extensions are great if you think those happy tears will rise up on your special day. They are right on trend at the moment and will enhance your natural lash line giving you a fuller more

dramatic look, with no fear of smudging. If possible try them a month prior to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions. WAXING Plan your waxing around your other appointments. It is ideal to do all hair removal one to two days before having your tan, this allows your skin to settle and gives you an even, streak-free tan. Even if you opt not to tan, it’s still a great idea to have your waxing done a couple days prior to your event. TANNING Fake it don’t bake it, all the colour without the sun damage! Consider having a trial so you can see the colour and know you will be happy on the day. Our professional airbrush tan is enriched with moisturising properties to promote longevity and hydration, it dries instantly and develops in two hours. We suggest having your tan one to two days prior to the event so it’s at optimum colour and settled on your skin. BEAUTY SLEEP Sounds simple but really works. Try to have a few early nights in the lead up, this will prevent dark circles, tired, dehydrated skin and avoid any red eyes. You will look and feel fresh. So now all that’s left is to practise your pose to be paparazzi ready.

SHORT HAIR? HELL YEAH! F

or anyone who has recently had the chop, you will understand the incredibly freeing feeling once you rid yourself of your long, time-consuming locks. Bobs and other statement short haircuts are back in a big way however, you may at first find yourself a little lost in this new territory. Learning to style any new haircut can be challenging, but without the ease of a ponytail or topknot on hand, a shorter cut adds an extra element of difficulty. And while it may take some time to get the hang of it, once you nail a few versatile looks you’ll be head over heels with your fierce, short style and not missing your long locks for a second. Below we have listed our top ways to style short hair and kick your look into overdrive. PLAIT-TASTIC Plaits may be one thing you thought you had to kiss goodbye when you opted for the chop however, that is certainly not the case. Petite french braids are fabulous for short hair and can be pinned at the bottom for a clean finish. Part your hair down the centre and ensure you are completing a tight braid close to the scalp for a prim and properly styled look. Continue the braid

through to the nape of your neck and repeat on the opposite side. Pin at the bottom and feel free to pin elsewhere to keep tidy if need be. BED HAIR This look is perfect if you’ve curled your hair but it isn’t sitting quite how you’d like or it’s day two and they are starting to drop. Feel free to get a little creative pulling pieces here and there as the appeal of this style is its “bed hair look”. Straighteners are great for adding a flick or a curl where needed for extra wow-factor. SLICK BOB If you are looking for a highly glamorous way to style your bob, slicking it back is simple yet makes a dramatic statement in the style stakes. Wet your hair and once damp, apply a generous amount of gel spray and sweep the hair back. Use a wide-toothed comb for the best result and be sure to slick it all back so there’s no part in sight. HALF UP Half-up half-down has been a much-loved look for as long as anyone can remember and with shorter hair, this is not something you have to give up. Adding body at the crown and pulling a few strands of hair loose helps to set this style off!

MAKE A SPRING STATEMENT Breathe new life into your look with the change to a warmer season

W

ith spring in full swing, it is time to stow away the dark make-up pallets of the winter season and breathe new life into your look. The spring make-up trends for 2019 are all about the natural look with a pop of colour. Last year spring was very much focused on the nude lip, bare faced combo however, things are ramping up a little this coming season, with peach cheeks, pop-of-colour lips and full eyebrows the make-up of choice. When it comes to the blush, bronzer has been a go-to for many a season in place of blush however, the peach and pink tones of old are making a comeback in a big way and we here at Downs Style HQ are very excited about it. Another tone expected to make an appearance is the new hue of rose gold blush, which has burst on to the scene, leaving many a happy make-up artist in its wake. For the lips, a pop of colour to add wow-factor is nothing new however, the colour in which we will see it this season certainly is. Coral will be a key colour choice of lipstick for the upcoming season and with a rose-gold cheek and fierce brows – this combination screams spring chic. And speaking of brows, keep up the maintenance on them ladies because the full brow trend is going nowhere. This season however, the look is a little more groomed than we’ve come to know, but the fullness is still well and truly there. Lastly, for nights out on the town, the silver or white inner-eye highlighter addition is a must. Not only does this make-up addition work to add contrast to your look, it gives the appearance of wider eyes and works wonders to draw attention to them. With all bases covered for the ultimate spring make-up look, get set for a fun few months of playing around with the new season’s look and turning heads wherever you go.

FACE THE FACTS Skincare means common sense, not falling for product tricks

W

hen it comes to our skincare, we all want to ensure we are being as vigilant as possible. However, it is important to keep in the back of your mind the truth that just like any other business, growth and profitability are front of mind for any enterprise, skincare focused or otherwise. And while this mindset helps to keep businesses sustainable and afloat, as a consumer, having your wits about you and not falling for every trick in the book is an important element. To help wade through the confusion, we have outlined some common misconceptions or false promises when it comes to skincare to ensure you are receiving the right information and in turn, giving your skin the best care possible. YOU CAN SHRINK PORES Shrinking your pores would have to be one of the most common misconceptions in the world of skincare. You cannot shrink your pores, no matter what the person selling you the product promises you. You can, however, make them look smaller. Using an exfoliating product to slough off dead skin cells that have built up on the pore will give them a reduced appearance. Be warned that picking and squeezing your pores can also stretch and scar them. So, if you are prone to clogged pores, use a salicylic acid-based product to keep them clean on the surface instead. YOU CAN GET RID OF CELLULITE When it comes to using a cream, gel or spray to eliminate cellulite, the hard truth is that this is simply not possible. Cellulite is the combination of normal fat deposition and fibrous bands that connect deeper structures to the skin. When the amount of fat increases the fat bulges between the fibrous bands resulting in the dimpling of the skin that is referred to as cellulite. Of course, it is possible to minimise cellulite through improved muscular definition in specific areas and by working to get rid of trapped fat naturally through dry-skin brushing pre-shower, which helps improve circulation. SKIN CAN NEVER BE TOO CLEAN

Don’t take the war on grime too seriously or chances are you’ll be removing the natural skin oils. This will leave your skin dry, irritable, itchy and even prone to dermatitis. Cleansing gently once to twice a day is more than enough. And, while we’re at it – that black “dirt” that you get on the cotton wool ball is more likely to be a mixture of dirt and exfoliated skin cells rather than pure filth. So relax! IF IT SAYS ‘NATURAL’, IT ONLY CONTAINS NATURAL, PURE INGREDIENTS Read the label carefully. Many products that claim to be natural are actually full of ingredients like preservatives that aren’t natural and you may wish to avoid. STRETCH MARKS ARE 100% AVOIDABLE While this may come as a surprise to learn, scientific studies have shown that some individuals are more susceptible to stretch marks than others due to their genetic background. Being genetically prone to stretch marks means that the chances of developing them are higher than in someone who does not have that predisposition. Creams that contain a retinoid often work well to help fade your stretch marks. DRY SKIN CAUSES WRINKLES Dry skin just accentuates them. The facts are, most of wrinkles you see in the mirror are caused by the sun. The other 20 per cent are the result of facial expressions such as smiling and frowning. If you smoke, the appearance of these wrinkles is accelerated. Wearing a suncream with a protection factor of at least SPF15 is the best way you can prevent ageing. Choose one based on titanium dioxide or zinc, not chemicals.

CELERY JUICE OR ‘MIRACLE DRINK’? There is a new health and weight loss trend which has garnered immense attention worldwide and has everyday people through to celebrities touting its effectiveness

A

nd while you could be forgiven for thinking it must be some wildly expensive new-age creation, this new health trend is as unassuming as it is popular. Celery juice has burst on to the scene in a big way and while there is some speculation over its classification as a “superfood”, experts do all at least agree that it is highly nutritious and beneficial for people’s health. Celery juice first came to mass attention through Anthony William, also known as The Medical Medium, a New York Times best-selling author and so-called “Originator of The Global Celery Juice Movement”. Mr William has dubbed celery juice “a miracle drink,” claiming it can heal eczema, psoriasis, and acne. It also theoretically reduces bloating, fights autoimmune disease, tackles acid reflux, and eradicates bacteria and viruses. Other proponents have declared it contains “detoxifying properties that cleanse the body of all germs and toxins”. Since, celebrities such as Kim Kardashian-West, Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Campbell have credited the juice with being a huge game changer in relation to their skin, digestion, hydration, and inflammation issues. Anthony William’s mantra is quite simple, start every day by drinking 16 ounces (or about 470ml) of pure celery juice on an empty stomach and wait 15 to 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else. And while you could be forgiven for thinking it all sounds a little too good to be true, we thought we would delve a little into the science of the juice and determine its many benefits to help you decide whether this is a health trend that just may be the perfect fit for you.

Celery contains high levels of vitamin K and good amounts of vitamin A, vitamins B-2 and B-6, and vitamin C. Celery is also a good source of the following nutrients: ● Folate ● Potassium ● Manganese ● Pantothenic acid ● Dietary fibre. Celery also contains health-boosting flavonoids and other phytochemicals. From a weight loss perspective, the fibre present in celery really is key as it works to help you feel fuller, balance your blood sugar levels, maintain healthy cholesterol levels, feed the good bacteria in your gut, boost your immune system and help reduce your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So, with all health benefits considered, it seems while the jury may still be out on the “superfood” status of celery, jumping on board this latest trend is sure to have garner some health benefits and whether it proves to be a “miracle juice” or not, I dare say you would be hard-pressed to find a nutritionist who would advocate against anyone upping their vegetable intake.

NO SWEAT, NO STRESS There is a safe and permanent solution to underarm embarrassment

B

y now you have probably heard of miraDry permanent sweat reduction treatment. miraDry heralds an absolute revolution in the treatment of moderate to severe axillary – underarm sweating. This is a safe and permanent solution that once complete, does not need to ever be repeated. The miraDry system uses energy that targets and destroys the sweat and odour glands in your underarm. Once those glands are destroyed they do not grow back, and once they are gone, they are gone for good. Don’t I Need to Sweat? Of course! But not from your underarms. While your body does need sweat glands to cool itself, your body has 2-4 million sweat glands and only about 2% are found in your underarms. Eliminating 2% of sweat glands does not affect your body’s ability to cool itself. After miraDry, you will experience the many benefits of reducing sweat in the underarm area, but you will continue to sweat normally in other areas of your body. miraDry is the safest and best method to reduce sweaty

underarms - permanently. It gives medical professionals another avenue to manage axillary hyperhidrosis. miraDry turns an abnormally profuse sweater in to a normal person - one who still sweats during heavy exercise, or on hot days. Patients are often anxious as to when their sweating will return again. With miraDry, the anticipation is not there as patients experience a "normal pattern of sweating" - for life! If you would like to book a miraDry consultation or have any questions, please call the Cosmetic Elegance Clinic on 4638 2700 or visit sweatless.com.au.

The interior designers have a talent for dreaming up warm, practical, functional, child-friendly spaces and creating inviting and comfortable interiors. Together, in this latest series, Andersens Dalby has covered some important topics to help you achieve your ultimate goal of turning a house into a home. CONSIDER WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE When starting a new project, it’s important to establish a strong brief. One of the best ways I find to establish a brief is to start with magazines and images. They’re a great communicator and really help you decide what it is you really want in your room. You’ll find that you’ll create a look that is really your own. ACHIEVING A HARMONIOUS DESIGN When selecting the decorator items for my clients, I always start with a hero piece. You might have a beautiful painting with gorgeous colours. Pull from those colours for all of those pieces like your cushions and lampshades and really inject your personality. They’re the pieces that really make your house a home.

PICKING A LAWYER KARA BEST, LEGAL DIRECTOR AND ACCREDITED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST

I

t goes without saying that if you’re going through a separation, you need to get an exceptional family lawyer. The tough thing is that rarely do you have anything to compare that experience to and often don’t know you’re not with the right lawyer. So what do I think it takes to be an exceptional family lawyer? 1. A specialist understanding about how this area of law works in operation, how the court approaches these matters, the latest expert advice on the needs of children, and how to achieve the most efficient division of financial resources. 2. An understanding that aggression is not power, nor does it achieve the desired outcome in most circumstances. It is essential to assertively and persuasively communicate, but aggression is an indication of weakness or self-doubt, manifested in bravado. 3. The respect of the court and colleagues. A reputation of knowing what you’re doing, and being honest about it, will carry greater weight in your dealings with other lawyers and ultimately effect better outcomes.

4. The courage to be honest from the outset. To give realistic expectations and any bad news right from the start. Too many clients find themselves being told by a court for the first time the minimal nature of their entitlement at law, even when they have spent considerable money fighting for something they would never achieve. 5. Agility and pragmatism. Exceptional lawyers appreciate the limitations of the system, the nature of your former partner’s personality and what can reasonably be negotiated, and they provide you with the most practical advice possible. 6. An exceptional family lawyer will be worth their cost. An experienced lawyer can bring a matter to a conclusion at an earlier time for significantly less irrespective of the fact that their hourly rate may have been larger than another lawyer.

Having studied in Brisbane but completing her placement in Roma, Miss Gibson decided to take her first fulltime optometrist position in Roma to experience something different. “I thought I’d do one to two years in the country then move back to the city but I’ve loved it since I moved out here,” Miss Gibson said. Miss Gibson’s team offer a range of services to their patients including eyesight testing, OCT scanning, glaucoma assessment, macular degeneration assessment, retinal photography, visual field analysis and diabetic retinopathy assessment. They are also the place to see about contact lenses, driver’s licence testing, sunglasses and spectacle manufacture and repairs. Miss Gibson said having access to optometry in regional areas was important for more than one reason. “Personal cost, people can’t always afford to go away, and it’s important because it saves the healthcare system so much.”

SURVIVE CAMPING TRIPS Follow these tips to take care of yourself while enjoying the great outdoors

A

s it warms up, many will take the opportunity to go camping across the Downs. For some ladies, however, it can set back skincare regimes for the length of the trip. The introduction of a tent can make caring for your skin quite difficult – so it is best to have a plan in place before you pack the tent and hit the road. CHECK AHEAD Prior to leaving on your trip, do your research into the location you will be camping at. Find out what amenities are available as this will directly impact what you pack. STAY CLEAN When showers aren’t available in the bush, settle for face and body wipes. They are an easy way to stay clean. There are many different types, including tea tree oil and eucalyptus. These are natural products which refresh the skin. They are also the best way to wipe off excess oil if there is no access to a shower. Look for biodegradable wipes to stay environmentally friendly. HAIR CARE With camp sites often having minimal access to shower, you are going to have to find a way to keep your hair clean. Dry shampoo is the best solution to this common problem. Dry shampoo is a spray product which is applied to the hair roots. After the shampoo is applied and absorbs the oil in your hair, comb your hair to spread it evenly and absorb any excess powder. Dry shampoo will prevent your hair from looking greasy and unclean. SKIN CARE When out in the sun for an extended period of time, it is important to keep you skin healthy. Opt for a sunscreen that comes with built-in moisturiser and tackle two essential beauty tasks at once. If you have powder foundation, mix a little into the sunscreen for both sun protection and colour correction before you hit the hiking trail. Also keep a standard moisturiser on hand

for the trip and apply it before going to bed. KEEP YOUR LIPS HEALTHY If you want to prevent your lips from drying out on those long hikes through the Bunya Mountains or similar surrounds, it is best to keep a lip balm handy. For those spending extended periods of time in the sun and wanting extra protection on the lips, select a product containing sunscreen. REPEL MOZZIES As anyone going camping knows, it is best to prepare for mosquitoes. If you want to keep your skin looking its best throughout the trip, you are going to want to avoid being covered in bites. The most commonly used repellent is DEET, a yellow oil developed by the US Army. DEET can be found in many brand name repellents. For those looking to go down a more natural route to fend off mozzies, there are insect repellents made with essential oils. Citronella oil and eucalyptus oil are two examples of plant-based products used in repellents. If you keep these tips in mind on your camping trip, your skin and hair will thank you.

SEALED WITH A KISS Tamica and Mitch Baker Bride’s first and maiden name: Tamica Gesler Bride, did you take your husband’s surname? Yes Groom’s name: Mitch Baker Wedding date: 27/10/2018 Wedding/reception venue: Jondaryan Woolshed Number of years together: Six How and where did you meet? Tamica: We met at the Dalby RSL, I was doing my apprenticeship there and my dad (who was the manager at the time) hired Mitch in the bar. Despite Dad warning Mitch that I was his daughter and I was off limits, he still went on to buy me flowers and eventually ask me on a date. When did you know it was love? Mitch: I’m not sure that there was a specific moment of realisation that it was love, that’s something that happens gradually over time, but on our very first date I knew she was the one when we were ordering dinner and I was trying to make a good impression by ordering a salad and she pipes up and says “yeah, I’ll have a steak” I knew from that moment on she was a keeper. Tamica: I can’t tell you exactly when I knew that it was love, but as soon as I met him I was intrigued. He wasn’t like any of the guys I knew, he had such an old soul and he made me laugh more than anyone else. He quickly became my best friend and with each date I fell harder for him. Bride, please describe your new husband: My husband is my rock in life, he’s always there for me no matter how crazy I’m being, I can always count on him to make 14 Style |

me laugh. He is the most kind-hearted person I know and my biggest supporter in life. I’m so lucky to be able to call him my hubby. Groom, please describe your new wife: My new wife is beautiful and caring, she has a heart of gold and sometimes a short temper, but I wouldn’t change her in any way. Describe the wedding proposal: Mitch: I had the whole thing planned out, to propose to her in the park but I couldn’t work up the nerve to ask and eventually time started to get away. Soon it was time to leave, and my plan of a beautiful park proposal was suddenly not how it was going to happen. When we got home, I decided to set up a little scavenger hunt for her, leaving little notes around the house until she eventually made her way to me, turning the corner to find me down on one knee. She was absolutely speechless. What was the wedding day like? Mitch: Nervewracking. I don’t do well in front of crowds, but having my groomsmen by my side really helped me get through the day. Seeing my beautiful bride at the end of the aisle made it all worth it. Tamica: It was truly magical; I wouldn’t change a single thing about our wedding day. It was the best day of my life. How many guests? 80 What was the colour theme/overall theme of the wedding? Tamica: The colour scheme was blush pink and navy blue. Our wedding theme was rustic/country. www.chinchillanews.com.au

Wed d i ng s

Who was in the bride and groom’s party and what relation are they to you? Tamica: My bridesmaids were my three closest friends in the world, Chloe Gabb, Ashleigh Griffiths and Danielle Van der Horst. Mitch: My groomsmen were Kye Windred, my best friend; Aaron Daniels, my brother and Brad Winderlich, my cousin. What song did you walk down the aisle to? Tamica: I walked down the aisle to I won’t give up, Jason Mraz Did you have live music or a sound system? Tamica: We decided to just have a sound system. Mitch and I spent a few late nights and maybe a few too many beverages unwinding and creating the best playlists for different parts of the day. Was there anything special/out of the ordinary about your wedding? Mitch: We decided to dedicate a front row chair at our ceremony to my father who has passed away, placing a reserved sign on it and a photo of him. Tamica: I made our cake and I wanted it to be different to your traditional wedding cake flavours, so we went with cookies & www.dalbyherald.com.au

cream and red velvet. Everyone loved it. Highlight of the wedding? Mitch: The highlight of the wedding for me was having all of our friends and family in one place. My favourite part of the day was after the ceremony when we went off to take photos. Everyone was more relaxed, and it was just a great time. Was there anything unusual about your vows and did you write them yourselves? Tamica: Our vows were personalised by our celebrant, sharing our story in a unique way. Highlight of the reception? Tamica: The highlight of the reception for me would have been the garter toss. It was so funny, and everyone got a good laugh out of it! Did anyone make a memorable speech? Tamica: My brother Ty made a very memorable speech, making a lot of people tear up and laugh. It was perfect. Where will you honeymoon? Tamica: We actually had a pre-honeymoon in Europe a few months before the wedding. Mitch then planned a surprise honeymoon for after the wedding where we went to Maroochydore and stayed at a resort for a week. It was so relaxing, exactly what we needed after all the wedding planning. Plans for the future eg: children, travel, home renovation? Mitch: Well, we’ve travelled, we are currently renovating our home and hopefully babies will be on the cards in the near future. September 2019

A CATERED AFFAIR Tips to make your wedding menu memorable

T

he catering for a wedding reception is generally the most costly item in the budget. The biggest decision is often how you will feed your guests. This is an important decision – you will need to consider whether to hold your wedding at a venue that is fully catered, organise outside catering to be delivered at a privately hired wedding venue, or cater yourself. Most venues offer a set menu for functions, often what is called an alternate drop is the preferred option for fully seated functions. An alternate drop gives you a choice of two dishes per course that are placed in front of guests alternatively, guests can swap dishes between themselves if they like. There is, of course, the option of cocktail-style catering as well. Reception venues usually quote catering prices on a per-head (or per-person) basis, so the number of wedding guests invited is really the key to managing your costs. The price you are quoted is usually only held for a short period of time (generally 30 days), largely due to seasonal availability of produce affecting the

pricing of menu items. Ensure you know exactly what is covered in the quote so you can make fair comparisons between venues. TIPS ● Think about the foods that will be in season. A good idea is to select a menu that will complement the season. ● If you plan on having a certain theme to your wedding, why not carry it through with the catering? ● Caterers can offer great flexibility in both budget and style of food, so ask them for their ideas. ● Always ask to sample dishes before booking a caterer or venue as you want to be sure the chef is consistent through the courses. ● Make sure your wedding menu is well chosen and suitable for all your guests’ dietary requirements. ● Most caterers require a deposit to secure your booking, which should be deducted from the final bill. ● The best weddings generally have delicious things not only to eat but also to drink, so ask your caterer about their drinks menu and food and wine pairing.

CAKE CONCEPTS Be confident you will get what you want

W

PHOTO: MAYDENNISON 2018

hen it comes to deciding on the all-important cake for your wedding day, there are a few key elements you must consider, says owner of Maydennison Cakes and Crafts, Louise Neagle. First and foremost, Louise highlights the importance of researching your cake artist. “You need to be confident they can provide you with what you are wanting,” she said. “Can they create a cake within your budget? Are they food licensed and insured? What are their reviews like? How far are they willing to deliver the cake? Do they offer taste testing?” Once you have settled on the right person, the style, design, colours and flavours are the next biggest considerations. Lastly, ensure you are not caught out in undesirable circumstances by factoring in the venue and time of year you’re getting married. “If there is no air conditioning and you are getting married in November, you need to consider how your cake is going to be kept cool without the need for refrigeration.”

SETTING A BUDGET Getting a little creative could end up saving you a pretty bundle

A

n average wedding costs about $30,000. If you’d rather put some of that towards your honeymoon or first home then read on! STEP ONE Set a budget and stick to it! By being clever and creative you can still have a beautiful wedding that is perfect for you. You don’t have to lash out on every aspect of your wedding. Sit down with your partner and decide which areas are really important to you and which you could do differently. INVITATIONS With a little design know-how, you can design and print your own invitations. You can also buy basic wedding stationery at department stores. Registry office: It’s not nearly as romantic but a marriage in a registry office can be followed up with a fabulous party. THE DRESS Look on the internet and shop around for a dress that will make you feel beautiful on the day. A second-hand dress can be

up-cycled to create a really unique look, and the same goes for the bridesmaids. THE VENUE You don’t have to book a big fancy venue. You can have your reception at home and spend a bit on sprucing up the garden. You can also get married in a park, public garden or on a beach. THE FOOD A three-course sit down dinner is going to cost big dollars. Look at other options such as a champagne breakfast, high tea, buffet or cocktail party. THE GUEST LIST Keep it small and exclusive. If you absolutely cannot leave anyone out then maybe opt for a wedding breakfast rather than a sit-down dinner. ASK AROUND Do you have family or friends with vintage cars, who can arrange flowers, take photos, do make-up, make a cake, help modify dresses? Many people are honoured to be asked to help and be part of your big day.

We’re here to HELP YOU achieve YOUR GOALS in 2019

A traditional wedding has many inspirations to draw from.

STICKING WITH TRADITION Something borrowed, something blue might be for you

N

o matter what culture or faith you observe, you will find some fascinating traditions to include in your big day. If you identify with a particular country or belief system, you might want to explore a few traditions to include in your ceremony or on the day. It will be meaningful to you and a source of interest for your guests. SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, AND A SIXPENCE IN HER SHOE Possibly one of the most well-known traditions, this one has several meanings. The “something old” symbolises the continuity between the family of the bride and the past. The “something new” represents the bride’s new life, while “something borrowed” stands for borrowed happiness from friends. “Something blue” symbolises purity, love and modesty, which were traditional virtues of a bride. Finally, the sixpence is placed in the bride’s shoe for wealth and prosperity. THE BRIDE WORE WHITE This is a Western custom to symbolise purity, not virginity, in the Victorian era. However, a white dress and veil was not considered appropriate 24

in the second or subsequent wedding. VEILING The veiling of the bride has its origins in the belief that a woman is vulnerable and must be hidden from evil spirits. In arranged marriages, veiling was more used so the groom couldn’t back out when he saw the bride for the first time. To this day, however, in many religions the veil is a sign of humility and respect before God during a religious ceremony. CELTIC HANDFASTING Handfasting is a wedding ritual in which the bride’s and groom’s hands are tied together. It is said to be based on an ancient Celtic tradition and to have inspired the phrase “tying the knot”. BLENDING OF THE SANDS In this ceremony, the bride and groom each have a container of sand which they pour into one, which is then sealed. Some use plain white sand and others choose coloured sands. THE BRIDE’S BOUQUET There are many traditions around the bridal bouquet. In ancient Rome, brides carried flowers as symbols of new beginnings, fidelity and hope for fertility. In medieval times, the bouquet was necessary to hide the bad odours of most villages. In modern times, there is a belief that the bride should throw her bouquet to her bridesmaids and whoever catches it will be the www.chinchillanews.com.au

next one to marry. CONFETTI Guests would throw rice — thought to bring luck and fertility — at the bride and groom as they departed the marriage ceremony.

25

Nowadays, with wildlife and environmental concerns, rice is usually replaced with colourful confetti, flower petals or bubbles. THE WEDDING CAKE In some parts of England, the wedding cake was made from community-stored dried fruit and shared with the entire village as a treat. Later when “stacked” or tiered cakes became fashionable, couples traditionally saved the top tier of their wedding cake for the christening of their first child. Today, couples may not have babies within a year or choose not to christen them, and so save the top tier for their first wedding anniversary instead. BRIDE TO THE LEFT This tradition harks back to a very different time, when the groom needed the space to brandish a sword to protect his bride. While certainly not the case in present days, this tradition still stands in most ceremonies. THE UNITY CANDLE The lighting of the unity candle is a relatively recent tradition. The ceremony involves two tapered candles and a large pillar candle. Usually the mothers of the couple join to light the big candle with the tapered ones to represent the joining of two families. After the vows, the bride and groom may also choose to light the candle together. RECEIVING LINE The purpose of a receiving line is for the hosts of the wedding and the bridal party to welcome all guests. This is still common but, in addition, couples also circulate between courses at the reception.

NATURAL BEAUTY BY DEBBIE LAMKIN — OWNER, COSMETIC ENHANCEMENT CLINIC Debbie Lamkin

O

ver time, our skin reduces the production of collagen and elastin. Skin appears thinner due to loss of elasticity — producing dynamic lines and wrinkles, and loss of volume to cheeks and lips. This is when we may need a little boost to refresh and restore our skin’s appearance, which can be achieved by non-surgical procedures. During many years as an aesthetic/cosmetic registered nurse, I have found that aesthetic medicine is an integral part of wellness and self-care. Whether the client’s goal is to rejuvenate the skin, or to prevent wrinkles and creases forming, the real outcome is how they feel about themselves. I have met many clients who need a lift to boost their self-esteem and confidence and, by receiving anti-wrinkle and dermal filler treatments (with an artistic tweak here and there to enhance their beautification), it can do just that. So, when I started Cosmetic Enhancement, I resolved to

provide these options to clients, because I enjoy helping people achieve their very best and to feel good about themselves. I offer a range of effective, high quality anti-wrinkle treatments which relax the muscles in the area that cause the dynamic lines, like around the eyes (providing a brow lift if needed) and for forehead, chin and other areas of concern that require muscle relaxant treatment. By softening the offending lines and wrinkles, a naturally looking, brighter, softer appearance to the face is created. The dermal fillers contain a combination of hyaluronic acid and glycerol, which improves hydration and firmness to the skin by plumping and filling — and addressing fine lines to enhance fuller lips and define facial contours. To make an appointment, contact me at Cosmetic Enhancement today.

Spring Specials Offers valid until October 31st 2019

STARS VIRGO

Aug 24th – Sept 24th

Virgos will be kicking up their heels as a new job opportunity may beckon. If you are brave enough to take the plunge it could be worth your while. Family life is simply rolling along nicely — with your organisational skills it should be. Time spent with good friends in spring will give you much joy. Don’t overindulge: recovering from too much food and drink is taking a little longer.

LIBRA

ARIES

Mar 21st – Apr 20th

Crazy is one way to describe your current lifestyle. Running from one job to another is getting to be addictive. Your life is full of wonder and laughter which is fantastic for everyone in your inner circle of friends. It seems that you live a dream existence at present with satisfaction high on your bucket list. No one really can keep up with a Libran at full throttle.

Oh my, where have you been? It has been a long time since you were up and about. If health issues are the problem then perhaps it is time to address any issues. Winter can get the best of anyone and those chilly days make for snuggling up with someone special who will take the time to feed you chicken soup to help with that yucky feeling. If stuck in a dreary job, then change it. Life is yours for the taking so take flight.

Oct 24th – Nov 22nd

Apr 21st – May 21st

Sept 24th – Oct 23rd

SCORPIO

Might be time to work out where you are headed. Life is positively so busy at present and juggling family and work used to be easier, however it is getting a little harder. Don’t sacrifice your own time to solve everyone’s problems — it is not up to you to keep everyone happy. So, take a deep breath in, put the feet up and grab a glass of wine, you have earned this baby.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd – Dec 21st

Sagittarius, get ready for the best season ever. It is time to enjoy the fruits of your labour and finally able to see where you are heading, and it is in the right direction. Work is settling down as you are now part of a fantastic crew that will have your back even when times get tough. You will work harder and make more money.

CAPRICORN

Dec 22nd – Jan 20th

Don’t let it get you down. Work is frustrating at present with nothing seeming to go right. It will take more than careful footing to keep you on the straight and narrow. Relax, it will be time to focus on money this month how to make more, how to spend more and saving for a rainy day. There is nothing better than the feeling of cold hard cash burning a hole in your pocket.

AQUARIUS

Jan 21st – Feb 19th

Looking so fine, Aquarians, this spring as you trip the light fantastic, you will be the talk of the town as being seen in all the best restaurants, events and meeting important people will give you a boost on the career ladder. Not that you need that boost when your ladder is made of solid gold it will be a brave person who tries to make you fall. Never going to happen.

PISCES

Feb 20th – Mar 20th

30

When Pisces decides to make changes in her life it seems that everyone is included right down to the family pet. If you are deciding to relocate then think peace, tranquillity and somewhere to lose yourself. Perhaps you need to attend a retreat to recharge your batteries. Whichever way you decide it will be just the boost needed to get back on track. Live life to the fullest. Spending time with family is important.

TAURUS

Taurus, it is time to think big when it comes to family. There could be a move on the cards, whether through employment or perhaps just for a sea-change. Taurus is not a sign that gets pushed around and if someone has rubbed you the wrong way, oh boy will they know all about it. Take stock of your life and go where you feel will give your future a solid foundation.

GEMINI

May 22nd – June 22nd

When time tells you that a holiday is needed then listen and make plans. Go and explore. Overseas adventures will fill you with a sense of wonder. Make sure that your passport is in order — You don’t want those awkward border security problems. Think fun times and perhaps a dash of romance will come direct to your door. I mean who doesn’t like a tall handsome stranger especially if they have a sexy accent to boot.

CANCER

June 23rd – July 23rd

Fitness in the lead up to spring, even though in the past it might seem you tend to stay indoors and hide. Now it seems that you are eagerly waiting at the gym. Let’s face it: You have caught the adrenalin bug. Take care that you don’t overdo it as no one wants to see you pull a muscle. Catching up with friends is high on the agenda which may include booking a long overdue holiday and plane tickets.

LEO

July 24th – Aug 23rd

Time to get out and party. You have celebrated your birthday month (boy has this year flown) so you need to take time out of this busy schedule to get your health back on track. I suppose it is simply a case of too much fun, not enough sleep. I see that you will be able to perhaps pay off any outstanding credit card bills.
