SKIN IN THE GAME Ella Baché have some pro tips to get you looking your very best HOW TO BE CAMERA READY FOR PHOTOS THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME WEDDING Bells are ringing because you have found that someone special, or you have just completed your final assessment and are now preparing for your graduation. Your dress is sorted, all the planning prep is going along smoothly for your special day, it’s now time to get your skin camera ready. Whether you are super organised with months to go, or you are more of a last minute girl and the event is only a couple of weeks away, the team at Ella Baché have some pro tips to get you looking your very best. SEE YOUR SKINCARE PROFESSIONAL FACIALS are like going to the gym for your skin because just like your figure you want your skin glowing and in tip top shape. If time is on your side your beauty therapist will plan a facial regime to obtain the results for your skin, or if time is of the essence she will have a quick fix solution for you. We have a range of High Performance Facials using the latest technology to boost collagen and reduce fine lines and wrinkles, or a refining microdermabrasion facial to reduce pores and brighten your complexion, or maybe something as simple as a deep cleansing facial to detox your skin. Facials will improve your complexion providing the perfect canvas for the perfect make-up. BROWS YOUR brows provide the framing for your eyes and face. Whether you want a full and natural look or a more sculptured shape, start with a professional brow shape a couple of months out, then maintain with regular appointments in the lead up to achieve the perfect brow. Pro tip: Combine with a brow tint and lash tint for a more polished finished look. LASH EXTENSIONS LASH extensions are great if you think those happy tears will rise up on your special day. They are right on trend at the moment and will enhance your natural lash line giving you a fuller more

dramatic look, with no fear of smudging. If possible try them a month prior to make sure you don’t have any adverse reactions. WAXING PLAN your waxing around your other appointments. It is ideal to do all hair removal 1-2 days before having your tan, this allows your skin to settle and gives you an even streak free tan. Even if you opt not to tan, it’s still a great idea to have your waxing done a couple days prior to your event. TANNING FAKE it don’t bake it, all the colour without the sun damage! Consider having a trial so you can see the colour and know you will be happy on the day. Our professional airbrush tan is enriched with moisturising properties to promote longevity and hydration, it dries instantly and develops in two hours. We suggest having your tan 1-2 days prior to the event so it’s at optimum colour and settled on your skin. BEAUTY SLEEP SOUNDS simple but really works. Try to have a few early nights in the lead up, this will prevent dark circles, tired, dehydrated skin and avoid any red eyes. You will look and feel fresh. So now all that’s left is to practice your pose to be paparazzi ready.

VERY MUCH IN LOVE: Amanda and Josh Skerman on their wedding day.

PHOTOS: CARLA YEO PHOTOGRAPHY

MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN Church friendship leads to romance and marriage

A

LOVE that may have been born at church has been made official in the eyes of God. Amanda Buckley and Josh Skerman were married on April 7 this year at the Dalby Presbyterian Church after two and a half years together. The lovers went to the same church before being in the same friendship group. From there a real bond developed. Amanda said she had married the most amazing man. “I’ve always known him to be the most caring and selfless person who will go out of his way for me and anyone close to him,” she said. “We’ve never had a serious argument because he always wants what’s best for the both of us instead of just himself. He’s certainly one mighty fine husband.” Josh kept the proposal to his wife-to-be simple and it worked a treat. “Josh took me out to his family farm one afternoon,” Amanda said. “We sat outside with beers and chips and he popped the

question as we watched the sunset over the sorghum. I didn’t know he was such a romantic until then.” The wedding reception was held at the shed on the same farm where the pair became engaged. Hessian, lace and a lot of fairy lights were used as decorations to transform the shed into the dream reception venue for the 110 guests. Amanda said it was the best day ever, while Josh said he never wanted to leave. “The food, the people, the dancing, the speeches, how amazing the venue looked ... there were so many highlights,” he said. “Words cannot describe how blessed we felt to have so many of our family and friends want to come along and be a part of our beginning as husband and wife.” For Amanda the highlight was being announced as “Mr and Mrs” for the first time, as it brought a huge smile to the lovebirds’ faces. The pair took their vows from scripture, while Amanda walked down the aisle to the song Wildfire by Seafret.

SKINCARE MAKES A DIFFERENCE MAKE-UP TIPS

G

etting into a good skincare regime well in advance of a wedding will help you look great on the day. Whether it’s using quality skincare products, microdermabrasion or good nutrition and hydration, skin is something that takes time to improve. The next step is to find the right foundation for your skin tone and type as well as a good primer that will help set it. This will ensure you put your best face forward the whole day. Eyebrows are huge at the moment. It’s a thing people either love or hate. Gone are the days of slick, skinny eyebrows. The thicker the better. Pencilling in or filling in your eyebrows is very common. Have a beauty professional groom your eyebrows at least three days beforehand. This will enhance your features and frame your eyes. If you are using eyeliner, go for a waterproof and smudge-proof liquid version to avoid teary raccoon eyes. Depending on what’s going on upstairs with your eyes, lipstick can be bold (if eye make-up is softer), or a neutral shade (if you like a smoky eye treatment). www.dalbyherald.com.au

Do some research beforehand so you can show your make-up artist what look you are after. There’s plenty of inspiration on Pinterest or Instagram. Make sure you finish your make-up at least an hour before your photographer arrives so you can get dressed in a stress-free state.

KEEPING IT TOGETHER HAIRSTYLE TIPS

W

edding hairstyles generally have to hold it together for about 10 hours, so it is important to choose one that isn’t too complicated and works for your hair type. It makes sense to test drive your hairstyle beforehand, not only to see if it suits you but also to test its holding power. Recent trends in hair design have leaned towards a more natural look rather than a formal construction. While curls and frizz should be somewhat tamed, natural waves running free, paired with something like a flower crown, are quite popular with modern brides. The simple up-do centred around a bun is also in fashion. A bun that looks like it was created effortlessly but is put together with precision is a popular, less formal choice. Add some whimsy to it by wrapping your hair around the bun, braiding parts of the bun or leaving a few strands free to move freely can create a more casual, carefree look.

MIDWIVES ON HAND Maternity care offers needed support

W

omen in rural and regional areas often feel their maternity care options are limited by distance. My Midwives, based in Toowoomba, is working to change this situation for women in the Darling Downs and beyond. Managing director Liz Wilkes believes that wherever women are based it is a priority they have access to a known care provider. “It is important that women have a trusted care provider wherever they live,” Liz said. “For most women that care provider can be a known midwife who can provide care from early in pregnancy through until baby is six weeks old. “Research tells us that this is the model that is best practice where the midwife works alongside GPs, obstetricians and other health professionals.” Recent focus on closures in rural areas of Queensland has increased anxiety across the region.

“My midwives take our role very seriously,” Liz said. “We seek to make sure women are confident in pregnancy and well prepared for birth and mothering. Having a known midwife to speak to really increases the feeling of certainty and safety.” After-birth consultations can also occur, including about various technologies, to support women with all elements including breastfeeding and mental health. “We know that women often feel like breastfeeding will be easy and when it isn’t, they panic. The internet has increased our options, even for women in very remote areas, and this can be a supplement to face-to-face consultations,” Liz said. “The other area we are seeing problems in is perinatal mental health with an avalanche of anxiety and also depression hitting women. We need to make sure there are a wide array of supports available.”

PICTURE YOUR HAPPINESS The right photographer can work some magic on your special day CARLA YEO

W

hether choosing a photographer to capture some family memories – so you don’t have to squeeze yourself into a family selfie shot – or selecting a photographer to capture your wedding day, it can be a daunting task. I firmly believe you will get the most out of your photography if you feel at ease with your photographer. It is extremely important for me to have a comfortable connection with my clients. This helps ensure the images are relaxed, raw and honest. I love the ability to capture real-life moments and natural emotions of those I get to work with. Delivering images that reflect a client’s personality is what a lifestyle photographer does best. It’s a photographer’s job to give a level of direction to those they capture. When considering the right photographer for you, the key is finding a level of direction you are my comfortable with. I like to guide clients for the most natural shots,

sometimes with limited instruction and often taking the candid approach. Other photographers may find a more assertive approach works for them, but everyone is different and this guidance will vary as photographers work with their clients and the elements to create the best possible shots. It’s a good idea to research a photographer’s work to get a “feel” for their style of photography. Although most photographers can work with a variety of requests, they usually have their own style stamped across their work. If you have seen images from a photographer’s recent work, you can expect that your photos captured by them will reflect a similar style. The way a photographer renders light, be in natural or artificial, is imperative to the quality of images. If you are concerned about the location for your shoot, the time of day, lighting limitations etc, chat to your photographer and they can work with you to ensure your images are captured utilising the best available light. I believe that in our region we are spoilt for choice when it comes to selecting a photographer. We have some real talent behind the lens, each with their own style. Talk to friends and family about their photography experiences to understand who they have liked and why. Do your research and find a certain something that resonates with you, a ‘feeling’, a connection or simply an admiration for the style of photos you are wanting for yourself.

SETTING THE TONE There are so many options when it comes to wedding invitations and they don’t have to stress the budget for your big day THE importance of the wedding invitation is often underestimated. It is a crucial element that sets the tone and style of your wedding and communicates this, as well as the time and place for guests. It is the first glimpse your guests have of the style, formality and theme you have chosen for your big day, and therefore needs to make an impact, build enthusiasm and set expectations. Engraving: this is one of the most formal options and typically the most expensive. This process produces a crisp, matte type, making it ideal for use with white on dark paper, metallic inks and of course classic black ink on ivory paper. Engraving requires paper with a substantial weight, such as card stock, and is traditionally used with time-honoured scripts, but contemporary fonts are increasingly popular. Letterpress: like engraving, letterpress is an age-old technique that is labour intensive and therefore costly. But while engraved printing appears raised, letterpress type is created by manual impression, producing indented type. A letterpress invitation can be either formal or casual, but it has a certain handmade look about it – the type often appears slightly weathered and the ink slightly diffused. Though not as elegant in appearance as engraving, offset can look quite modern and is ideal for invitations you design yourself. Use smooth, strong paper for best results. Calligraphy: if looking for something unique, you can commission a calligrapher to write your invitations by hand. This option is ideal if you are having a small wedding, or an alternative would be for the calligrapher to write the master. This is then printed before you get the calligrapher to write each of the guests’ names on the printed invitation.

Pre-printed invitations: many of the major greeting card companies manufacture invitations. Most are packaged invitations with place cards and thank-you notes included. If the budget is restricted these are your best option, though there are a few important points to note. Check the wording to see if it suits your needs, check the number of invitations and place cards in the pack and remember to allow some spares for errors. If you so desire, you may also have to factor in the cost of having to pay a professional to write them.

property, ensure that you continue to engage with your accountant and financial advisor to remain well informed about the avenues available to you and any financial impact with respect to the division of your property. 3. Most importantly, look after yourself. If you are having difficulty coping, then don’t hesitate to reach out for support, whether that be from friends or family or from a professional support network. Your family lawyer will also be in a position to point you in the right direction for services and organisations that are relevant to your circumstances. While change is rarely comfortable, in life it is necessary. Separation is likely to be a challenging stage of your life, but with quality professional advice and positive support networks, you will be better equipped to move forward into this new phase of your life and your new beginning.

hange is scary, right? Deciding to separate from your partner can be an overwhelming process, whether it is a joint decision, or something initiated by only one person in the relationship. There are many factors to be considered as you step into this new phase of your life, including arrangements for your children, dividing your finances and property, and sometimes even planning for your safety. A wise woman once told me that you can’t eat an elephant in one go, but if you take it bite by bite, it’s achievable. The key is to arm yourself with knowledge obtained from quality advice so you are better informed about the best approach, and to surround yourself with people who provide you with positive support. My tips to help break down the proverbial elephant are: 1. It is important to obtain legal advice from a lawyer specialising in family law sooner rather than later. Knowing the process early on will help to protect you, your children and your financial position, and hopefully move you towards reaching an amicable resolution without the need to go to court. 2. CAPTURE MOMENTS Offer ways for guests to express themselves and create memories

In the furore that is a modern wedding, couples are so cajoled into loving their special moment that it is easy to lose track of something important: the people they share it with. So, why not let them leave a memento? Sometimes it is the candid memories of the guests’ antics that leave you with the biggest smiles after all is done and dusted and you are flicking through photos with your new spouse. Here’s some great ideas. DISPOSABLE CAMERAS: Place one at each table. Have your MC invite guests to use the roll of film on their table. They must try and get a snap of each person at the table. As your wedding rolls on it is guaranteed you will have some beautiful, funny and chaotic photos that the hired professional never could have captured. MEMORY JAR: Place a large glass vessel a bowl of small slips of paper and a jar of pens beside this. Have your MC announce that the newlyweds would love each guest to write one memory to place in the jar, and write their names on the back. POLAROID TREE: This can be a decorative false tree, brown string with pegs strung decoratively or a piece of beautiful driftwood or dried tree branch. Place a polaroid camera beside the www.dalbyherald.com.au

tree so guests can take a selfie. Ensure there are pegs for guests to pin their photo to the tree and a jar of pens so multiple people can write their notes at the same time. FINGERPRINT TREE: Have an artistic friend draw the trunk and branches of a tree on a canvas. Ensure there are plenty of off-shooting branches. Place an ink pad (whatever colour you like) beside the canvas so guests can put their fingerprint as a leaf on the tree. September 2018

FORMAL FEVER

Make the lead-up to your big night as enjoyable and stress-free as possible by starting your planning early

our formal is a once-in-a-lifetime event, so to ensure that it is the night you’ve dreamt of, planning is vital. It may seem like an overwhelming task, but if you set time frames to cross items off your to-do list, your plans will run smoothly. Six to 12 months to go: Write down your to-do list and set yourself a budget. Start thinking about your outfit, looking in magazines and browsing in shops for a look or a colour you like. If you need a partner, start looking now to ensure they keep the night free for you. Choose someone you feel comfortable with and who you think will feel comfortable with you, your friends and, in some cases, parents. Three to six months to go: Make all your bookings, such

as hair and make-up appointments, flowers, suit hire, photographer and your transport for the night. If you’d like to have dental work done to give you that brilliant smile, make an appointment with your dentist as early as possible. By now you should have chosen your outfit. Two months to go: Buy your accessories and shoes, and take photos of hairstyles from magazines or keep some pictures on your phone to show your hair stylist. Make sure you know exactly what you want. The final week: Have any final beauty treatments done and try your whole outfit on together to avoid any last-minute surprises. On the day: Allow plenty of time to get ready, then relax and enjoy yourself.

FORMAL FEVER Nailing your hair and make-up

T

6858671am

he hairstyle and make-up you wear for your formal can very well make or break your final look, so you need to put a lot of thought into it. Two classic looks are the smoky eye and the bold lip, which although timeless, can be tweaked for a more modern twist. The bold lip is a classic look that adds instant sophistication to an outfit, and while a vibrant red is the norm in this style, deep burgundy and plum colours have become the latest trend, thanks to celebrities like Lorde. Bright orange tones have also become popular as a lip colour in the past year. Let your lips do the talking by pairing this look with natural foundation, and winged eyeliner and mascara for flirtatious eyes. If you choose to focus on accentuating your eyes, the same rule applies, with natural foundation and subtle lip gloss or lipstick providing the best look. While black and brown shades are the classic colours for a smokey eye, like anything, they need to suit your skin tone, as sometimes very dark eye makeup on someone with pale skin can be overwhelming.

IT’S TIME FOR CAKE Incorporate your theme, style and personal tastes in a delicious offering

WHO doesn’t love to tuck into a nice slice of wedding cake after a wedding dinner? While you can never go wrong with a traditional white vanilla, tiered wedding cake, other classic flavours such as chocolate have made a comeback in recent years, as has buttercream icing. Trends have shown people like to decorate cakes with cute, cartoon-like toppers – the figurines that look like the bride and groom and sit atop the cake. For those who want a more elegant look, metallic wedding cakes are the latest trend. Made with a basic wedding cake base, the cake is decorated in edible glitter. For a more rustic, vintage look, a naked cake could be the way to go. A naked cake is a cake that has been constructed so everybody can see what is inside. For those wanting to do a wedding cake on a tighter budget, there are a number of options available. A cupcake tower could be a great way to provide guests with a sweet treat but at half the cost. Red velvet cupcakes or even basic chocolate or vanilla cupcakes always go down well. You could even provide each guest with an extra cupcake to take home as a wedding favour. For those who don’t like cake, a sweets bar could be a good option. Set up a table with different kinds of lollies, chocolates and ice creams that you love and you’ll have the perfect sweet buffet for guests to enjoy. TIME TO PUT A RING ON IT There are a few ways to go about choosing the perfect wedding ring for him and her

T

he tradition of wearing the ring on your left ring finger is an old one (we’re talking ancient Rome) and the idea behind it was that the vein in the fourth finger on the left hand, supposedly, ran directly to one’s heart. If you plan on wearing your wedding band on the “vein of love” with your engagement ring, then you should consider something that is going to complement that ring. PERFECT PAIR Most jewellers will offer rings designed to fit together perfectly, edge to edge. Have a discussion with your jeweller about what options are available in matching your engagement ring. Many women like the harmony that matching metals, and diamonds of the same shape, can create. MIX AND MATCH While some couples strive for symmetry it’s perfectly okay to do your own thing, even mixing metals and styles. If one of your rings is a family heirloom but you have your eye on a different style for the other, or you simply like the look of yellow gold against white gold, that’s fine too.

You can mix and match vintage styles as long as the design is along the same lines and doesn’t clash. Take a page out of Queen Elizabeth II’s book; she wears her three-carat diamond engagement ring alongside her Welsh gold wedding band. CLAW VS CHANNEL With a diamond ring you have a few options in the setting. For ultimate brilliance, a claw setting will allow light into the diamond. If you’re worried your lifestyle might wear on your ring, a channel setting will offer a smoother look as well as protect the diamonds from abrasion. FOR HIM When it comes to choosing wedding bands, men have a greater selection than ever with unique detailing, brushed surfaces and accent diamonds customising a ring to suit the individual. The most popular type of men’s wedding ring is the plain metal band. And if both parties are happy with simplicity and want to match, many jewellers offer wedding bands suited for both men and women.

F O O D & DR I N K

You can still have the froth and bubbles on a budget.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY A little creativity can help you keep food and drink costs down

OOD and alcohol, along with the venue, are the most expensive parts of a wedding. On average, Australians spend $18,000 on the three. Sometimes it can be difficult to keep costs low, especially if venues do not allow you to self-cater or bring your own drinks. Here are some tips and things to think about if you want to keep food and drink costs low. CATERING ON A BUDGET: If you’re after a formal sit-down meal, it doesn’t have to cost a small fortune. There are plenty of professional and affordable caterers available to put together your ideal wedding meal. Do your research to find the best deal and make sure your venue is happy to work with an outside caterer. DIY FOOD: If your venue allows, why not self-cater some of the food, if not all of the food, at your wedding? Appetisers can be very expensive to organise, so why not hold a cooking session the day before the wedding with some family and friends where you make some nibbles?

Offering packages for your big day including waxing, tinting, spray tanning, nails and facials

Making your own will allow you to make some fancy things at a cheaper cost. If you don’t have time to make some, buy things from supermarkets, either fresh or frozen. To save even more money, don’t have servers. Just ask a family member or friend to place the appetisers on tables for people to enjoy. DO YOU NEED ALCOHOL? Do you and your partner not drink much? If you don’t drink usually, then why have alcohol at your wedding? It would just be an extra cost that is not about you on a day that is all about you. If you do want to have a drinks package, consider having an open bar for only two hours instead of four. Or if your venue allows it, bring your own alcohol, as buying from a bottle shop will be drastically cheaper than from the venue, especially if you buy in bulk. FOOD TRUCKS: A new trend taking over weddings, food trucks offer a much cheaper catering option for couples. From taco trucks, to wood-fired pizzas and other street food, basically any form of food comes in a food truck these days.

VOWS

WRITING YOUR VOWS Your vows are a very important part of the wedding — make sure you get them just right.

A

For all your Wedding and Racing outfits tfits

6852879aa

great way to add a personal touch to your ceremony is to customise your wedding vows. It doesn’t take much work to simply add some special words to the traditional vows, or even create your own vows from scratch. If you decide this is a path you want to take, you’ll first need to make sure your celebrant will allow personalised vows, as some religions such as Catholic and Anglican churches will require you to recite all or some of the traditional vows.

FOR ALL YOUR FLORAL NEEDS...

6858671ai

Come and have a look!!!

SOME OPTIONS Share the same vows or each write your own privately as a surprise for each other. Think about all of the times that you have shared together and the memories you have made. Include something on the memories you hope to make in the future. State exactly what you mean to each other, why you love your partner and what you promise to give them in your relationship.

STEEPED IN TRADITION We look at how different cultures celebrate weddings

W

eddings can be all about traditions and talismans which will hopefully make us lucky in love. Different cultures have their own quirky customs and when it comes to weddings there are plenty. From smashing plates to multiple gown changes, cutting ties to pinning money, customs comes in all forms across the world. Will you be sharing any of these traditions on your special day? GREECE ■ A Greek bride may carry a lump of sugar on her wedding day to ensure she has a sweet life, or she might carry ivy as a symbol of endless love. ■ Gold crowns or wreaths made of organic blossom are placed on the heads of the bride and groom. These crowns are linked by a silk ribbon. For the rest of their wedding day, the newlyweds are honoured as king and queen. ■ Greek wedding receptions see guests dance with both the bride and the groom and pin money on their clothes. ■ Dinner plates are smashed on the floor for good luck. ■ Bags of sugar coated almonds are served to the guests.

JAPAN ■ The bride and groom take nine sips of sake – tradition states that after the first sip they are officially husband and wife. ■ The Japanese bride is painted pure white from head to toe, she wears a white kimono and an elaborate headpiece covered with many ornaments to invite good luck. ■ For the reception, the new bride changes into a red kimono and again later into a western-style gown. ITALY ■ Ribbons symbolise the tying together of two lives, so a ribbon is tied across the front of the church door to symbolise the wedding bond. ■ The menu at an Italian reception is nearly as important as the wedding itself. Guests may be served as many as 14 different courses accompanied by wine and other beverages. ■ After dinner, the customary multi-layered Italian wedding cake is served with espresso. The sheer volume of food reflects how highly anticipated and festive a typical Italian wedding is.

WEDDING ON A BUDGET Plan your ceremony without snapping your purse strings

A

n average wedding costs about $30,000. If you’d rather put some of that towards your honeymoon or first home, then read on. STEP ONE: Set a budget and stick to it. By being clever and creative you can have a beautiful wedding that is perfect for you. You don’t have to lash out on every aspect of your wedding. Sit down with your partner and decide which areas are really important to you and which you could do differently. INVITATIONS: With a little design know-how, you can design and print your own invitations. You can also buy basic wedding stationery at department stores. REGISTRY OFFICE: It’s not nearly as romantic but a marriage in a registry office can be followed up with a fabulous party. THE DRESS: Look on the internet and shop around for a dress that will make you feel beautiful on the day. A second-hand dress can be upcycled to create a really unique look. And the same goes for the bridesmaids.

Your first dance can be memorable with a little help.

THE VENUE: You don’t have to book a fancy venue. You can have your reception at home and spend a bit on sprucing up the garden. You can also get married in a park, garden or on a beach. THE FOOD: A three-course sit down dinner is going to cost big dollars. Look at other options such as a champagne breakfast, high tea, buffet or cocktail party. THE GUEST LIST: Keep it small and exclusive. If you absolutely cannot leave anyone out then maybe opt for a wedding breakfast rather than a sit down dinner. ASK AROUND: Do you have family or friends with vintage cars, who can arrange flowers, take photos, do make-up, make a cake, help modify dresses. Many people are honoured to be asked to help and be part of your big day.

CARE FOR YOUR LIFE

Vigilance is required with skin cancer

R

esearch shows that 81% of all diagnosed cancers are skin cancer, making it by far the most common cancer in Australia and the one most people will develop in their lifetime. When is a skin check advisable? At least once a year or when you have a lesion you are concerned about. “Skin cancer is not a black and white science,” says Dr Albert Vermeulen from Cosmetic Elegance Clinic. “If you are worried about something on your skin, have it checked out because it is just not worth the risk.” Medical director Dr Eddie Roos says other triggers for a skin check could be a sore that bleeds, heals and bleeds again or any sore that fails to heal in six to eight weeks. Debunking the myths Some of us are working with false information about skin cancer. For example, did you know that not all melanomas are black and raised? Some are pink. Melanoma can occur anywhere and in places such as nail beds, between your toes and on the soles of the feet. Phone 4638 2700 or email info@cosmetic elegance.com.au to arrange your skin check. Go to www.cosmet icelegance.com.au for additional information on skin cancer.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM Government funding available for safer communities and building digital skills ocal councils and community organisations in regional and remote areas work overtime to support the communities they know and love. To help them, we need to make the most of Federal Government funding available under the Safer Communities program and Be Connected program. Under the Safer Communities program, I encourage community groups to apply for a share of $30 million to boost community safety and security. Grants of $1000 right up to $1 million are available. This funding goes to crime hotspots to prevent, deter and detect crime, and protect community organisations. CCTV cameras and security lighting provide an extra layer of protection in the community. As well as infrastructure funding, round three provides early intervention funding for community organisations. This will help Police-Citizens Youth Clubs, Blue Light organisations and Youth Off The Streets with their early intervention and youth activities around Australia. By joining the Be Connected Network, organisations across

Maranoa can help our seniors maintain their independence and keep connected with family and friends. Using the internet is not just something young people do. We want to make sure everyone can use computers and the internet to improve their lives. We encourage community organisations to apply for Building Digital Skills grants, which range from $2500 to $15,000, to deliver free digital skills training to people over 50 as part of the Be Connected program. Applications for the Safer Communities program close on September 25. For more information about the infrastructure stream or early intervention stream, please visit business.gov.au/assistance/ safer-communities-fund, or phone 132 846. The application form for Building Digital Skills grants will be available until September 28. The finish date for all delivery rounds is June 30, 2019. To find out more information about Be Connected or to join the network, go to www.beconnected.esafety.gov.au or phone 1300 795 897. — David Littleproud, Member for Maranoa

Recreate your first date to make your anniversary a night to remember.

MAKE IT SPECIAL Your anniversary only comes once a year

W

hether you are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary, or your first year together as a couple, here are some romantic ideas for the occasion. RECREATE YOUR FIRST DATE If you can remember the details of the night that sealed the deal, try to recreate as many aspects of the date as possible. This will remind you and your partner where it all started and why you fell in love in the first place. TRY SOMETHING NEW Your anniversary is the perfect opportunity to tick one off your bucket list. Perhaps you and your partner have been saying for ages how great it would be to take Route 66 from start to finish. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to have a couple’s massage. There is no time like the present. This will show your partner you are serious about putting your

plans into action, and it will produce another incredible memory for you to share. SPEND THE NIGHT SOMEWHERE SPECIAL Whether it’s the wedding suite where you spent your first night as a married couple, or the cabin where you spent your first holiday together, spend the night somewhere special. Being somewhere alone for the night, without distractions, will give you plenty of time to give your partner all the attention they deserve on this special day (and vice versa). IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS Is there something your partner mentioned in passing, something they’d like to do, somewhere they’d like to go, or something small they would like to buy? Surprising your partner with a trinket that caught their eye months ago, or a fishing trip they’ve always wanted to take but kept postponing, shows them you’ve paid attention. Whatever you do, make it special.
