NOTE appy November. What a month it’s been since the last edition of Style. The team has been out and about within the Toowoomba community, supporting events such as the Garden City’s first Diner En Blanc. You can see who was there on page 66. We also enjoyed Toowoomba Philharmonic Society’s latest production, Shrek the Musical, and attended the Unleash the Beast event for Mental Health Awareness Day. Seeing so many people come together to learn about mental health and start removing the taboo surrounding it, was inspiring. Also inspiring are the young men behind local handyman business Jobs by Jacobs. You can read their story on page 10. This month is set to be just as busy as the last, with the “race that stops the nation” just around the corner. Plan your Melbourne Cup Day on pages 16 and 64. November is also home, of course, to Remembrance Day. This year the Queensland Music Festival has paired with the Queensland Government to bring Toowoomba (and Cairns) a free concert to commemorate the day. Style magazine spoke to some of the people making this concert happen – you can read the story on page 36. Enjoy this edition, and don’t forget to tag @stylemagazinestoowoomba in your travels around the Toowoomba region.

MICHELLE BRIDGES IS VISITING TOOWOOMBA FOR THE CHRONICLE CLUB’S LATEST EVENT ON NOVEMBER 3, SO STYLE MAGAZINE TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A CHAT WITH THE WELL-KNOWN AUSTRALIAN PERSONAL TRAINER

T

o say Michelle Bridges is a dedicated woman would be an understatement. At 47 years old with a young son, one might think Michelle would be hoping to slow down and take things easy, but the personal trainer is thriving on her busy life. “When I was a kid, my mum would ask ‘why do you have to do so much?’ because she was worried of me burning myself out,” Michelle says. “If there’s anything punishing about my career it would have to be my schedule. “There is no typical day; they’re always different.” Michelle is determined, however. Knowing how much she “preaches” about the importance of being organised and methodical, she tries to keep it so in her own life. Over only a couple days, Michelle can be in one state for a keynote address at an event, then flying to another state for interviews or training, or having a day off with her son Axel — it’s hard to know from one day to the next. “Some people think it would be exciting, but after a while it gets a bit harrowing because you can’t even book in a facial!” Michelle laughs. But fitness is a life-long love for Michelle. “It’s been something that’s always been a part of my life,” she says. “From an early age I played sports and

8 | November 2018

loved it. “I had a go at everything, and fell in love with the idea of competition and equally in love with training.” At only 14, Michelle started teaching fitness in school to kids who weren’t into sport. “I’m lucky I found what I love to do at such an early age. “I didn’t even think about being daunted by teaching people — within six

months I went down to the squash courts and asked to teach fitness classes.” It was one of the early examples of an attitude that has become Michelle’s “calling card”, as she explains it. “I bite off more than I can chew and figure it out later!” she laughs. “It probably was daunting, but I got such a kick out of it. “It’s those nerves that give you a kick on.”

It’s the involvement in sport and fitness that Michelle accredits to many life lessons she learnt as a child. “I learnt lessons like accountability, responsibility, turning up, how to win and lose, all as a child which I use as an adult,” she explains. Michelle has been asked many times what the secret is to being so successful as a personal trainer. “That’s a very hard question to answer — I think the planets just aligned, I think I was doing it at the right time,” she says. “Not so many people were doing it at that point perhaps, and I put in a lot of hard yards.” “We were the first in the field for the 12-week program, and it was bloody good; it still is!” There were a good 15 years that Michelle spent “belting it” and taking jobs no-one else wanted to do. “It got to the point where my friends would ask to pay me to come to events and I would have to say ‘sorry, that’s not how it works — I’ll be working’,” she says. She worked with on the ground with the people, cementing education and results-orientated work. “By the time I put my hat in the ring, I had all that experience,” Michelle says. “There’s depth to the work I’ve done over the last 20 to 30 years that have helped keep me in this workplace.” While Michelle’s career to date has

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

been wonderful, there are a few moments she recalls with particular fondness. “I look back on the Biggest Loser with good memories. “There was a lot of pressure to get it right and it was hard, but it was a beautiful part of my career,” she says. The other highlights, Michelle mentions, would have to be putting out the fitness clothing and food ranges with her team, and the books — which took several rejections before finding a publisher who believed in the idea as much as Michelle and her team did. So what does the future look like for Michelle Bridges? ”We’re really working on getting my new keynote address up and running, we’re looking at another book next year, new hardgoods and clothing before the end of Christmas,” Michelle says. ”Maybe, just maybe, I might be doing some more TV next year, but we’re not sure of that one yet.” Michelle is also a MediBank ambassador, which sees her flying around the country for ParkRun events. “Everything I do is involved in the fitness world in some way,” she says. In the meantime, however, she is keen for the visit to Toowoomba for the Chronicle Club event on Saturday November 3. ”It’s a good fun thing. ”I’m very exciting for coming to Toowoomba, to meet everyone and chat to them.”

MEET THE GUYS PUTTING THE ‘JACOBS’ IN JOBS BY JACOBS

BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

T

his is not a story about overcoming challenges. It’s a story about independence, community spirit, and giving it a go. This is a story about two young men who have touched the lives of many and, in return, have reaped the benefits of a community network in full swing. I’m talking, of course, about Jacob Reed and Jacob Beck of Jobs by Jacobs;

10 | November 2018

the handyman business specialising in tasks their clients don’t have time for, or cannot do themselves. The 20-year-old Reed has Down syndrome and Beck has autism, but more fool you if you underestimate them. The guys are high school friends and their relationship is a comfortable one. Reed is the joker of the team, while Beck brings a light touch of seriousness to the conversation. They’re the perfect match. I asked whether the guys have nicknames to distinguish one Jacob from the other in conversation. “Yeah, his name is Reed, but I call him Reedy. It’s just easier,” Beck said, adding that he himself does not have a nickname. The Jacobs do everything from watering the garden, trimming hedges, mowing the lawn and pulling weeds, to washing windows and collecting mail. “Another thing we do, is we walk dogs. Right now we’re walking a dog named Thadd. He and his owner live in Wilsonton. He’s a light brown dog, but I’m just not sure which breed,” Beck said. “He’s a big dog. He’s very strong,” Reed added with a smile. Tim Littlejohn is the team’s support worker. He is a warm, welcoming man who

has a special camaraderie with the Jacobs and has shared in the joys of their progress. At the start, the business consisted of just Jacob Reed, with Tim in tow. “We started about 18 months ago, doing maybe one job a month,” Tim said. Jacob Beck joined the business earlier this year with the same goal as his partner, which is to gain independence — and they are progressing towards that goal every day. “Their planning and organisation is getting better,” said Jacob Beck’s mother, Karen. “My plan is to look after myself and to get away from Mum and Dad,” Reed joked. Beck explained that he joined the business because he needed a job. “Jacob’s NDIS goal is to get a part-time job and this is the kind of work he’s after,” Karen added. At the moment, the guys are doing quite a handful of jobs a week, with about two or three of those done without Tim’s supervision and support. Some of the jobs the guys currently do themselves, include walking Thadd, checking on plants and collecting mail. A big factor contributing to their independence and ability to do these jobs themselves, is the fact that Beck passed his driving test and now has a licence. “I was really excited to get my licence. I can drive us to places where we have www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

feature | style

to work, so we can do jobs by ourselves,” he happily shared. Tim said walking Thadd is a big effort from the guys. “It’s over at Wilsonton at a particularly busy time and Jacob is a new driver. It’s a big step for him to drive them from here to there,” he explained. Beck has to plan his route, thinking about factors like the time of day, the number of cars on the road, whether schoolkids will be out and about, and so on. Karen said this development is like a dream come true. “You can’t measure that,” she said. The guys each have jobs they prefer over others — Reed said he likes watering gardens the most and Beck favours weeding — but nothing beats looking after Humphrey. “The boys had two or three weeks of looking after a puppy every day. This thing was so damn cute, they loved it,” Tim said. The guys have quite a lot of regular customers at the moment and would like to keep expanding their business. With their new-found freedom through Beck’s licence, I wanted to know what the guys do for fun. “Some days we go bowling,” Beck said. I asked whether they sometimes go out for a Coke, just to get out of the house. “Yeah, we do. All the time,” Reed said with a laugh. “It’s really good to see them have a life www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

away from parents,” Karen said. The guys regularly run into their clients, who are eager to strike up a conversation with them and ask how they’re doing. “They’re little celebrities up at the Middle Ridge bakery,” Tim said, laughing. “Those connections are everything. Before they were doing this, they were much more isolated. Every time they get out and do a new job, that’s a new connection and a new part of their network,” Janet said. “Their skill sets – language, communication, and networking – keep building,” Karen added. “It’s just been overwhelming for the boys and myself in terms of how many jobs we’ve got. Just the support of local businesses has been simply awesome,” Tim said. With a handful of supportive people in your life, you can pursue any goal and succeed. But, with the support of a community, you can move mountains.

As if to affirm this thought, Jobs by Jacobs won the Innovation and Access Award at the Business DisABILITY Awards in Toowoomba on September 13 this year. The award recognised their outstanding achievement and creativity in pursuing new ways to increase awareness of inclusive practices in a work, training or volunteer space. According to Tim, securing the services of Jobs by Jacobs is a two-way street. Once a client has contacted Tim directly, or through their Facebook page, he and the guys will arrange a visit to the home or business where their services are needed. “We have to make sure they’re the right fit for us and we’re the right fit for them, and whether the boys are capable of doing the job,” Tim explained. YOU CAN REACH THE TEAM ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE BY SEARCHING ‘JOBS BY JACOBS’, OR BY CALLING TIM ON 0458 005 513.

GETTING FAMILY INVOLVED WITH YOUR HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY LIFESHAPE CLINIC

I

f you’ve made the decision to start living healthier, this can be heavily influenced by those around you. It’s going to make everything that much easier, if your family is on board with the goals you are trying to achieve. LifeShape Clinic dietitian Nicola Moore has some great tips to encourage the whole family to adopt some healthier habits.

HEALTHY SWAPS AND AMENDMENTS

If you’re adopting healthier choices in your meals, you might be daunted by the thought of making different meals for yourself, partner and children. However, this can be alleviated with some simple swaps or amendments. “If you’re making some fish and vegetables for dinner, you can simply add additional sauces, mash or bread to their meals and keep yours as is,” Nicola suggests.

ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION

Getting everyone involved in what you’re doing is a great way to help them understand the changes you’re making. If you have the space, get the family involved in planting a herb garden and harvesting the produce. “Get the kids in the kitchen and have them chop, peel or grate veggies for dinner or go on family bike rides together,” Nicola says.

POSITIVE VIBES AND ROLE-MODELLING

Adopting a healthier lifestyle doesn’t have to sound daunting to the family. Create positive language around your new lifestyle rather than focusing on ‘dieting’. To get the family thinking positively about physical activity, use language like “I feel so good after going for a walk each night, would you like to start coming with me?”. “Being a positive role model is an important part of your children’s perception of food,” Nicola says. Try these steps over time, as your family may need time to adjust to your lifestyle just as you might. I’m based in Toowoomba, where I’ve lived for about half my life. I am a doting mum to two beautiful rescue cats, a bird, a turtle, and an assortment of tropical fish.

HOW DID ‘SUGARFLOWERWATER’ COME TO BE?

Q & A with

I started making gumpaste flowers in 2013 while experimenting with basic cake decorating at home. My first flower was an awfully made carnation on a birthday cake for my mum! I’m mostly YouTube-taught; I’ve benefited from the many talented decorators who share their craft on the internet. I’ve always loved the detail, beauty and variety of flowers — when I look at a live flower, I see such care and creativity.

Gabrielle Pragasam

WHAT GOES INTO ONE OF YOUR FLOWERS?

The flowers and leaves are made with gumpaste, which is a sugary, edible modelling clay — it’s like the white fondant used to cover traditional wedding cakes, but with an additive that makes it firmer. I colour the gumpaste with food colouring and I dust the finished flowers and leaves with edible pigments. However, most items include inedible elements for stability, like wires to prevent the flowers from breaking in transit. So, while my items may be food-safe, I would not recommend eating them.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PROJECT?

One of my favourite projects was a birthday cake I decorated for a friend and colleague two years ago. I envisaged a high tea-inspired cake, exploding with David Austin roses, leaves, pearls and piped lace, with a gumpaste teacup and saucer as the central design. I loved how this project extended my skills and came together as an almost too-pretty-to-eat cake.

emember when you were young and single? When it didn’t matter what was in the fridge or that the washing wasn’t done? Well, if you’re like me, those days are well and truly over — and gratefully so. Now it’s all about keeping on top of the washing, keeping a fully stocked fridge, play dates and juggling work, all while trying to be a good friend, partner and person. I’m not perfect, but with some organisation, communication and boundaries, I feel we can keep our heads together and win at family life. To me nothing beats meal planning — set aside time on a Sunday (or whatever day suits you) to check your fridge and pantry to decide on what your family is going to eat for the week ahead. Create your shopping list and fill in the gaps from there. Not only will this save time and money, it also allows everyone to know what’s on the menu. Washing, on the other hand — where do I start? Invest in a ‘kick-ass’ washer and dryer. For my clients with large families, I create washing baskets for each family member, so the kids just pick up the basket and put away their own items. One of the main things I see in so many homes is the annoying ‘dump zone’. We all have them: it’s where the school bags are dumped, the sports bags, the shoes and the odds and ends. Creating a system with hooks, doormats, even a message board, can really help manage this area. Quality family time is paramount. It’s good for the soul, great for nurturing and understanding your children and a wonderful way for you, as the parent, to get grounded and enjoy what having a family is all about. Even if it’s just sitting down together for one meal a week, it’s the rituals that create comfort and memories. They say it takes a village to raise a child, so if you don’t have that village or support around you go find one, ask for help. And if all else fails, may I recommend joining the circus. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

A STRONG ARGUMENT THE APPEAL OF STEEL FRAMES IN CONSTRUCTION

W

hen it comes to building your dream home, it goes without saying you’re going to be overwhelmed with decisions to make. Early in the process, a vitally important component of your build is choosing what framework you’re going to use — and a number of homeowners are turning to steel frames as an alternative to traditional wood. The steel versus wood debate will always prompt the question: is steel more effective at keeping the dreaded termites at bay? And the answer is yes (and no). Obviously, having the skeleton of your residence built from materials that termites don’t attack is a big positive. It most definitely reduces the square meterage they can destroy, but always be mindful that termites can still attack other wood features of your home like panelling, skirting boards and window sills, etc. No matter what framework you choose for your house, always be sure to

conduct periodic inspections (and treatments if needed) to combat the possibility of termite infestations. But a steel frame is a great start. As well as a proven termite deterrent, the benefits of steel as a building material are numerous with its strength and resilience seen as major benefits. That durability ensures less maintenance issues, making it a more attractive economic choice when it comes to building options. While surprisingly lightweight, steel frames can often offer a stronger foundation; as well as greater resistance to damaging storms and cyclonic winds. Steel is also fire resistant and, while house fires can always occur, a steel frame is less likely to warp in a fire and if the unthinkable does happen, it might just make the difference between repairs and totally starting again. And while addressing fire concerns, a common misunderstanding with steel frames is the perception that they may attract lightning in an electrical storm. SINCE 1959

This ensures total safety for the occupants in the case of storms or electricity surges. No matter what framing you choose be sure to discuss all your options with your builder to find the right fit when creating your dream home.

hile you may be familiar with the standard idea of “beard sculpting”, there is much more to this grooming trend than meets the eye. You probably won’t want to do this every day, but for a special occasion or party, beard sculpting can add that extra uniqueness. Start off basic by stringing baubles in for Christmas, or add some sparkle with an on-trend glitter beard. Once your beard has grown out, you can use some product with strong hold and have some fun! Common designs include moulding the beard into a Christmas tree shape, or creating fanciful curls. Social media can reveal an amazing assortment of ideas for beard sculpting – such as realistic-looking otters and ferrets clinging to your chin – but some designs may be better left alone unless you enjoy getting strange looks.

DOABLE TRENDS THIS FASHION SEASON With the weather heating up and summer just around the corner, now would be the time to start looking into your wardrobe for the next season

T

he fashion-lovers among us will be keen to discover what’s on-trend for summer 2018/19, but for those less inclined to be fashionable and more inclined to be comfy, there’s good news too.

POOL SLIDES

While this shoe is not new to the fashion scene, this season they are becoming more attractive while keeping the comfort with a half slide, half low mule hybrid. Even better, Chanel has created a slide with special fastenings so you can hang them off your bag when at the

beach — here’s hoping it’s a trend that catches on.

MATCHY MATCHY

Matching pieces isn’t new to the fashion scene, but this year is taking on a more holistic view. Double bags are coming on the scene, slung low on the hips, and it is essential to match the bags together. Get some sets and match them with shoes and accessories in tones of the same colour.

RAFFIA

This doesn’t just apply to the sun-safe

fashion of hats — camera bags, purses and more are fashionable in raffia this

BIKE SHORTS

Yes, they’re back again. But these bike shorts aren’t the neon Spandex of the ’80s — far from it. Pick a stretch-knit fabric in demure prints and delicate pastel colours. Match with a cute thin cardi and you’re set!

GET THE LOW-DOWN... ON WHAT’S UP IN THE BEAUTY WORLD

B

eauty trends come and go, but even so it can be quite overwhelming to consider the sheer number of trends there are at any given time. Even from country to country, the biggest beauty and hair trends can vary widely. Here are just a few of the biggest beauty trends of this season, broken down for ease.

26 | November 2018

EYELASHES

With probably more volume that you’ve seen before, the on-trend Russian volume eyelash extension technique sees up to eight fine extensions applied on a single eyelash.

HAIR

Blissful news for the busy modern woman, twisted braids and the messy bun are in!

Even more simple, if you want to keep your hair long instead of in a bun, the basic braid is also chic. For a night out, try the revamped “ondas al agua” (or “waves of the water”), a modern take on those old Hollywood voluminous waves.

LIPS

Wine stain lipstick has been huge in Brazil for a while, but all signs point to this trend flooding Australia soon. Wine-coloured lipstick has always been classy, but using a lip stain adds that extra bit of pizazz.

CHEEKS

Mostly a trend in Japan for now, using orange blush instead of pink is right now. If you’re not feeling confident in going all-out, try a peach tone of blush instead.

EYES

The cat eye isn’t going anywhere, it would appear, and neither is glitter. Thankfully, the glitter trend isn’t as garish as when last seen; more a cute sprinkle on the outer edge of the eye. Glitter cat-eye, anyone?

NOT SO HAIRY STYLES Hair trends don’t have to be impossible to achieve

F

ortunately for the modern woman, this season’s hair trends are relatively simple and wearable.

COLOURING

Oh so simple — this season is all about looking natural. Step away from the balayage and enjoy this low-key “wash” technique to achieve a child-like tone of baby-light blonde or mousey brown. It needs to be subtle with a healthy shimmer, so if your hair is dry and damaged from previous dyes, be sure to help it along with some good treatments.

WET WET WET

Forget the desperate blow-dry after washing your hair in the morning. Thanks to Calvin Klein in a recent show, damp ends are on-trend this season.

A BLEND MADE IN HEAVEN

Mix up the best of both formal and relaxed worlds with this trend. Hair is kept neat in the front and on the crown of the head, and finished with a loose ponytail or bun in the back. To keep the front neat over the course of the day, pop some hairspray on your palms and run over the hair to tame any flyaways. For the complete look, add texture spray to the bun or ponytail.

90S CHIC

Remember when you were six years old and clips were THE item to accessorise with? Welcome the adult revamp of this trend with chic clips and slides. Chanel recommends to twist and turn the hair while fixing in place with clips or hairpins, leaving the ends free.

SPRING CLEANING FOR MEN Declutter your wardrobe with these useful tips

S

pring is renowned for being the time to clean and declutter. A common criminal being left out of this essential overhaul is the wardrobe — whether we think there’s nothing in there that can go, or it’s simply too overwhelming. Here are some hard-and-fast tips to help with the latter.

DUST

TR Y

Dust is an ideal tell-all as to how much you really wear those old shoes. If there is a nice layer of grey around where the shoes were sitting once you drag them out, or if there is dust over or in them, it’s time to give them up.

OFF-TREND OR RETRO WEAR

■ the t-shirt with built-in long-sleeved layering from 2005 ■ brightly patterned

Unless you regularly go to retro-themed parties, these need to go. Even if you feel the need to commemorate the end of the “good old days” with a ceremonial burning of those neon polo shirts from two decades ago. A quick guide to these dated garments are:

bow-ties ■ hooded leather jackets that even JT doesn’t wear anymore ■ yes, neon polo shirts, that only very few men really rocked well anyway ■ belts with oversized buckles ■ racerback singlets *shudder* ■ and, of course, the hooded tank made famous by bad-boy Corey Worthington in the late 2000s.

BY ELIZABETH ADAMS, KENNEDY SPANNER LAWYERS

HAVING AN AFFAIR? WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?

F

or some, being in a relationship and having an affair on the side is not something new. However, a nasty surprise may await should both relationships break down: both ex-partners may be entitled to a division of property from the person that the affair was with. There was a man who was married

with three children, and had a secret girlfriend for some 17 years. The pair travelled overseas together, and spent two to three days together every few weeks at the husband’s farm before he would return home to his wife and children in a different state. The husband helped the girlfriend buy her first home and provided her with

financial support, however they rarely socialised as a couple. Therefore, the Court found the parties maintained separate lives but came together on a regular basis to enjoy a relationship, and determined they were not in a de-facto relationship — so there was no property settlement between the husband and girlfriend. If circumstances were a little different in the above case, however, the girlfriend may have had entitlement to a fairly large portion of the husband’s property — as in the below case. In a recent 2017 decision which involved a man who was living with his wife, for 18 months the husband met his secret girlfriend at a massage parlour where she worked He occasionally stayed overnight at her house and paid amounts towards her mortgage, eventually discussing having a baby. When they did have a child together, the husband and wife separated while the secret girlfriend was pregnant. The husband and secret girlfriend then separated around a year later, and the husband here was subject to two property settlements — one with his wife and one later with the secret girlfriend.

CELEBRITY CHEF DROPS IN F

or Qi’Lin Chinese Restaurant owners Annette Cheung, Stanley Poon and Daryll and Barbara Scott, it was a visit from culinary royalty. Former MasterChef winner, writer and television host Adam Liaw was looking for dinner recently and chose the Toowoomba restaurant as his eatery of choice. He and Julia Busuttil Nishmura (also an accomplished chef and cookbook author) were in town for the Carnival of Flowers as presenters at the Heritage Bank Festival of Food and Wine. And, with official duties finished for the night, they made a bee-line for the Hooper Centre restaurant to taste its delicious fare. It’s one thing to have the highly respected chef walk through your door, quite another to try to impress someone who has been chosen as UNICEF Australia’s National Ambassador for Nutrition. But, the restaurant owners had no reason for nerves. In an Instagram post, Adam mused that “suburban/country Chinese restaurants (are) a part of Australian history and one I hope we never lose”, before detailing his mouth-watering dinner choice of lemon chicken, crispy walnut beef, Coca Cola spare ribs and ‘A-grade’ fried ice cream for dessert. He then paid the ultimate compliment: “Qi’Lin in Toowoomba has won the award for Best Chinese Restaurant in Queensland for five years in a row and I can see why”. High praise indeed from the Destination Flavour television presenter and Japanese government-appointed Goodwill Ambassador of Japanese Cuisine.

GREEN MACHINE D

oes every corner of your home have a wilted brown stick in a pot as a constant reminder of your flora failings? You know it doesn’t have to be that way. Being surrounded by lush green plants not only improves your home’s décor, but also gives you wonderful health benefits as you reconnect with nature. And even if you don’t have that field degree in horticultural studies, there are plenty of hardy indoor plants out there that can spruce up your living space, without requiring major upkeep. Here are a few you might like to try: 1. With its distinctive lime-green and

1

white leaves, Dumb cane (Dieffenbachia) is a great addition to your home. It prefers a well-lit room (but not direct sunlight). Mist the leaves from time to time and water when dry. 2. A popular indoor plant, Bromeliads (Vriesea spp.) are renowned for their striking colour and long-lasting flowers. They require a little more watering, but thrive in bright to low light. 3. Mother-in-law's tongue (Sanseveria trifasciata 'Laurentii') can really make an impression when used in long box planters. A rugged plant with rigid leaves, it

loves the light, but try to shield from direct sun. 4. Another strong grower, Philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) likes a well-lit spot indoors. To maintain the plant’s health, be sure to remove dead growth and keep the leaves free of dust build-up. 4 Happy planting!

COULD FOOD BE INFLUENCING YOUR FAMILY’S HEALTH? Enjoying a balanced diet with adequate nutrition will lead to better wellbeing

U

nderstanding the connection between food and mood may unlock the health or behavioural issues you may be experiencing in your family. Consuming foods that are highly processed and refined have repeatedly shown an increase in anxiety and depression. A diet high in packet foods such as cakes, biscuits, lollies, chips, crackers, processed meats, processed dairy and so forth contain very little nutrition. In addition, they also contain many artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and additives. Enjoying a wide variety of fresh fruit,

vegetables, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, legumes, good quality dairy, good quality meat, and oily fish promotes good mental health - you will receive adequate nutrition leading to better wellbeing. Following some simple guidelines can make it easier: ● Healthy fats such as fish, extra virgin olive oil are important for good cholesterol and are anti-inflammatory and prevent depression. ● Wholegrains such as rice and other fibre-rich grains promote the growth of

good gut bacteria. ● Fruits and vegetables provide a wealth of important nutrients, including antioxidants that help prevent cell damage. ● Fermented food like yoghurt, kefir, sourdough and tempeh can encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut. ● Nuts, seeds, legumes are excellent plant-based protein that support good cholesterol. ● Water. We need water, remove the cordials and sugar-laden softdrinks for water and hydrate your body.

Heavy or painful periods? You don’t have to put up with it.

VOICES OF REMEMBRANCE T

he Queensland government, in partnership with the Queensland Music Festival, will celebrate Remembrance Day with two free concerts — one in Toowoomba and one in Cairns. Commemorating the signing of the Armistice and the end of the First World

War, these concerts will be led by renowned New Zealand baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes and award-winning songstress Katie Noonan. Accompanying their noteworthy talent will be a mass community choir made up of Toowoomba locals performing a vast repertoire of songs

which reflect on the legacy of the Anzacs. These songs have been especially chosen by music director and founder of The Choir of Hard Knocks, Dr Johnathon Welch. “It was a wonderful journey of discovery as we delved into the archives of the State Library of Queensland and unearthed a musical treasure trove of songs and stories from WWI. Music is a time warp in history and the music we’ve chosen reflects not only the songs that were popular and relevant 100 years ago, but also helped us create the story arc that will thread the concert together,” Dr Welch said. He added that the concerts will have a mix of popular WWI songs the audience will be able to sing along to, as well as a newly commissioned piece by legendary Australian composer Gordon Hamilton, and some contemporary music to bring the production back to current times. Months ago, the QMF put out the call for local choristers to audition for the chance to perform as part of this massive choir. A sizeable group of Toowoomba locals have made it through the auditions and rehearsal phases and are now ready to

She was chosen to sing in the core choir alongside members of the community, two of whom hold a special place in her heart. “My children sing in the Toowoomba Choral Society youth choir and will be performing in the mass choir. It’s great to be able to perform with them,” she said. Choir members attended workshops and rehearsed with Dr Welch and Mr Hamilton, making sure their voices are in top shape for the performances. “It was just a fantastic opportunity to work with Dr Welch,” said Vivienne, who also praised the local talents of her choir partners. A Toowoomba community orchestra has been enlisted and will be conducted by Patrick Pickett. The concert’s narrative will highlight the contribution of the Australian Light Horse, who turned the tide of WWI in Beersheba. “We really hope this concert will not only be an opportunity to reflect on the loss of so many Australian lives during

T

he Style team had a chat with photographic artist, JiÀhn Charlotte. This is what she had to say:

ABOUT HERSELF AND HER ART:

I can’t play an instrument, hold a note, or draw to save my life, but I’ve always had a love of imagery, which turned into a real interest about seven years ago when I bought my first DSLR. My journey began while taking photos of local musicians, and my work has since been featured in publications across the USA, Canada, Norway, Germany, and the UK. I am drawn to to anything outside the norm, with mood being the most important element to me.

ABOUT THIS HIGHFIELDS PHOTOSHOOT:

It was an excuse for some creative play. The make-up was loosely inspired by the band KISS, replacing the harshness of the black and white make-up with metallic gold. We worked with two diverse looks — one, a delicate boho feel, and the other with a harsh cyber-punk edge.

ABOUT HER UPCOMING EXHIBITION:

It’s a scary thing, putting yourself out there. Being invited to showcase my work with the international RAW Artists group and nominated for a RAW photographer of the year in 2014, broke the ice. My exhibition will showcase my sevenyear journey in photography across various genres I have explored.

DIWALI CELEBRATING RIGHTEOUSNESS

WHEN IS DIWALI? In the Southern Hemisphere, Diwali is celebrated in spring (usually in October or November). This year: Wednesday, November 7. Next year: Sunday, October 27. Last year: Thursday, October 19.

y a veryy We wish you

Happy Diwali

he Hindu festival of lights symbolises the victory of good over evil and the lifting of spiritual darkness. One of the most popular events on the Hindu religious calender, this festival is observed across the world, even inspiring non-Hindus to participate in the event. During the celebration, temples, homes, offices and shops are brightly illuminated with everything from lanterns and candles to fairy lights. Diwali is celebrated to honour Ramachandra, a major Hindu deity and seventh incarnation of the god Vishnu. It is believed that, on Diwali, Ramachandra returned from exile and defeated the demon king, Ravana. Throughout Australia, large-scale Diwali events are held every year in observance of this festival. Fireworks displays, symbolic burnings of the effigy of Ravana, henna stalls and much more can be found in towns and cities across the country. This year, Diwali will be observed on November 7. It is not a public holiday and business hours will remain uninterrupted, but it’s worth taking note of all the finely dressed people around town, the flickering lights at night, and sampling the sweets, savouries and herbs at Diwali food stalls.

AIRBNB VS HOTELS

THE ACCOMMODATION SHOWDOWN

T

ravel is taking off. The number of people hitting the road (or taking to the sky) has been increasing steadily over the last decade or so, with a further projected increase of about 35 per cent over the next 10 years. Perhaps because of social media (especially apps such as Pinterest and Instagram), or perhaps because of more advanced advertising campaigns, people are more curious than ever to explore their world. In response, the world of travel accommodation is changing and people are no longer automatically satisfied with the traditional motel or hotel. Although these options still suffice in a pinch or when travelling for work, when travelling for the experience of new sights, sounds, smells and tastes, people want more than just a clean room

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

and convenient check-in times, and they want it for cheaper. Airbnb was born of a demand for accommodation at a reasonable price, and has become a real headache for the traditional hospitality industry, developing into a whole subculture of travel accommodation. With options such as renting a vintage VW kombi in Tamborine Mountain for $139 per night and touring the Gold Coast (while taking your own “Insta-worthy” photos from the bed in the back), or renting a highland castle in Scotland with five of your friends for less than $450 per night, your accommodation options are limited only by your imagination. You can rent anything from a cave or a lighthouse, to a villa or a boutique hotel — you can even filter your search with specifications like “must have a carbon

monoxide detector”, or “must be pet friendly”. On the other hand, many high quality hotels, guest houses and B&Bs have regular specials ready to be scooped up by anybody ready to travel at any time. Most traditional accommodation options are well situated, and have operating deals with travel agencies and other providers to give you an all-round experience. Both sectors of the travel accommodation world have their perks and their drawbacks. At the end of the day, travellers will be swayed by what they want from their trip — a special stay, a cheap stay, a convenient stay, or a stay in whatever is available during a busy season. The options are endless.

A NEED TO WORK TOGETHER BY NIVARD NELSON, STYLE COLUMNIST

W

ho are the main drivers of tourism for Toowoomba, Darling Downs and the greater region as a whole? Is it the job of local councils like Toowoomba Regional Council? Is it the job of the relevant tourism bodies such as Southern Queensland Tourism Council or Tourism Darling Downs? Do the relevant business advocacy groups like Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce or TSBE lead the direction for tourism? I ask this question off the back of a hugely successful Carnival of Flowers and Lost Trades Fair. These festivals were a huge success and showcased the region at its best. But can all these bodies be doing more to drive tourism in our region over the

whole year? Should there be a concentrated effort from said bodies to have common objectives or goals, so that the communication from them shares a similar message to their target markets? An example of something that would benefit the community as a whole, and help to increase tourism, would be the construction of a conference and events centre. But this needs all those bodies mentioned above to come together and work for the greater good of the community. The strategy of those groups as individuals need to align, so tourism

grows in the region and we all benefit. By growing tourism everyone benefits. Restaurants and cafes prosper because people have to eat. The motels, hotels, caravan parks benefit because people need a place to stay. Retailers benefit as tourists spend money in the shops in town and the flow-on effects of this spending is great for the local economy. We need to work together because, as Aristotle said, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

LOOK UP! WHEN AND HOW TO WATCH NOVEMBER’S METEOR SHOWER

T

he Leonid meteor shower is an annual astronomical event which graces our skies every November. For the whole of November you will be able to catch a glimpse of meteors as they enter out atmosphere, but the shower usually peaks around November 17 to 18 each year. During the peak, stargazers will be able to see up to 15 meteors per hour. Named for the constellation from which the meteors emerge, the Leonids occur when the Earth passes through the debris of left by Comet Temple-Tuttle. This comet completes its orbit around the sun every 33 years, but leaves plenty of debris for us to smash through in that time, creating beautiful displays in our night sky.

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Granted, to make the most of the meteor shower, you’ll have to be awake in the wee hours of the morning (between 1am and 5am) on November 18, but this adds to the magic of it all. Here are some tips on how to maximise your viewing pleasure: ● Find a secluded viewing spot, away from all the neighbourhood lights. ● Meteor watching can be a waiting game, so dress appropriately and bring something for comfort — a blanket or chair will do. ● Your eyes will take about 15 to 20 minutes to adjust to the dark. Once they’ve done so, get comfy and look in the direction of the radiant (this is the point in the sky where the meteors seem to emerge from, in this case, the radiant

will be in the constellation Leo). There are plenty of apps and online interactive sky maps to help you find the radiant and track the progress of the meteors throughout the event. Find an open paddock this November, look up, and enjoy the show!

THE LEONIDS Period: November 6 to

November 30. Peak: November 17 to November 18, with up to 15 meteors per hour. Parent: Comet Temple-Tuttle. Where: Both Hemispheres.

STEP 1.

Start by making two small ponytails on the side of your head close to your left ear, one underneath the other. Secure these with elastic bands.

STEP 2.

Take the top ponytail and divide it in half. Pull the bottom ponytail up through the middle of the two halves and pin it above with a hair clip.

STEP 3.

Add some of your loose hair from your hairline to the right half of your bottom ponytail and tie the two halves together into a new ponytail.

STEP 4.

Remove the hair clip from the top secured ponytail, divide it in half, and pull the lower ponytail up through the two halves and secure with a hair clip.

STEP 5.

Repeat step three by adding loose hair from the hairline to the right half and tie together to create a new ponytail.

STEP 6.

Continue this process until you reach your right ear. Then take the top ponytail and secure it with an elastic band. Push your finger through the ponytail above the elastic tie, creating a hole. Pull the bottom ponytail through that hole, then tie that ponytail with an elastic tie. Repeat this process all the way down.

STEP 7.

Once completed add more volume to your braid by gently tugging at the outer section sections of hair to loosen them and give the braid a fuller look.

STEP 8.

Take the end of your braid and tuck it under your right ear where the braid started. Secure along the braid with bobby pins.

STEP 9.

Finish by misting the entire hairstyle with hairspray.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO GROW B

uilding on its stellar reputation for quality child care and education, Toowoomba’s Charley’s Place is expanding with a new centre (Charley’s Place Redwood – currently under construction on the Range). The innovative centre is set to open in early 2019, and will be a proud moment for head of operations Selena Platen who says the addition is an exciting new phase for the Charley Group. “We seem to be growing each week and the Redwood centre will provide an absorbing interactive forest school program as well as our regular teaching curricula,” Selena says. “It focuses on sustainability and a love

of nature and will allow us to take our children to the bush to enjoy hands-on learning experiences,” she says. And while the program will offer valuable insights into bio diversity and Australia’s natural resources, it will also prove the perfect balance to our fast-paced technology driven world. “At Charley’s, we understand the importance of STEM learning (sciences, technology, engineering and maths) and how important a role technology plays in that education. “That’s why we utilise smart boards and iPads as well as our own robots (Dash and B-Bop) to help teach children in a fun and engaging way.”

Selena said the centres have also embraced the government’s Early Learning Languages Australia program with a commitment to deliver ‘a culture of language and understanding’. “We have bachelor-qualified educators who understand the importance of play-based learning and they are always there to provide input and guidance as our children grow.” To complement their education programs, Charley’s centres also offer a full menu — providing cooked meals every day — with allergies and cultural dishes also accommodated. But it’s not just about the children. “One night a term, we open from 6pm to 9pm to allow parents the opportunity to spend some alone time together. “The children are provided dinner and the parents get to enjoy each other’s company. They really appreciate the chance for a ‘date night’ because some families don’t have the network around them to have an evening to themselves. “It’s just one of the little things we do to build closer relationships with our Charley families.” For more information or to enrol your child in coming programs, please contact Charley’s Place on 4599 9055.

Inviting accessories Someone at Jaguar Land Rover is obviously keyed in to how most buyers will use the Discovery. The ‘activity key’ wristband lets owners surf, swim or cycle while leaving the standard key disabled in the vehicle. It’s a smart move that avoids having to stash the key in a less-than-secure spot while you’re outdoors.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY

T

he latest Discovery is designed to impress. The four-wheel drive fuses the badge’s legendary ability to traverse tough terrain with styling and interior sophistication normally found on the more upmarket Range Rovers. The new design has opened the door to the next generation of urbanites chasing the look and the luxury without the Rangie premium. The Discovery is equipped to take you

anywhere in style with 19” alloy wheels. It also features a rear-view camera, 10” touchscreen and two-zone climate control as standard. There’s plenty of head and leg room throughout and the dashboard’s soft touch material soon reminds you that you’re travelling in total luxury. It’s the perfect vehicle to cruise to and from school, despite the fact the wheel articulation, transfer case and underbody protection place it among the

smarter vehicles to venture off the beaten track. The Disco uses the high-output 2.0-litre turbo diesel to great effect in the entry model and it can haul up to an impressive 3500kg. The six cylinder engine still remains a popular choice in the local market, giving drivers the added confidence and response when extra grunt is needed on the open road, or when towing a caravan or boat.

ON THE BIG SCREEN NEXT GEN RELEASE DATE: Out now on Netflix RATING: PG GENRE: Family, Action Comedy, Sci-fi and Fantasy CAST: Constance Wu, Michael Pena, Charlyne Yi, Jason Sudeikis

I

f you liked Big Hero 6, you will probably enjoy Netflix original film, Next Gen. In a futuristic world where personal-assistant robots are essential in every home, teenage Mai is increasingly angry and lonely. With a happy family life as a small child, everything changed for Mai when her father left and her mother used the robots to cope – effectively leaving Mai to fend for herself with only her dog Momo for company. When Mai slips off on her own at a Q-Bot convention, she accidentally discovers and activates a top-secret robot known only as Project 7723, and leaves her backpack behind when caught. Project 7723 escapes the confines of the lab and tracks Mai to her home to return the backpack, and there begins a friendship of sorts. The viewer could be forgiven for thinking this movie rather simplistic for the first 45 minutes but, as is later revealed, there is a lot more going on in the storyline. While marketed as a kids’ film, there are some mature topics dealt with, censored cursing, and strong sci-fi/confronting scenes towards the end. It’s a fun movie for adults, older children and teens, however, with some excellent discourse on grief, anger, loneliness, and growing up. Then, of course, there is always the discussion to be had on the repercussions of introducing AI into the world, which is also well dealt with in the film. Over all, Next Gen is one-and-a-half hours well spent.

TWO GREAT SPRING READS DON’T STOP BELIEVIN’

WHAT THE WOODS KEEP

by Oliva Newton-John

by Katya de Becerra

D

eliciously creepy, this novel is a thrilling, fast-paced read. The author herself admits it struggles to fit in one particular genre, sharing elements between fantasy, science-fiction, mystery, and young adult. The main character, Hayden, inherits her childhood home unexpectedly on her 18th birthday, alongside some mysterious instructions from her missing-presumed-dead mother from 10 years ago. Determined for some closure before selling the house, Hayden and her flatmate Del make the trip to the small town of Promise, Colorado. That’s when things start getting weird, eventually getting Hayden to doubt her tried-and-true defence system of scientific reasoning left over from the days when her father was a respected physics professor and not a Nibelung-obsessed eccentric. Particularly considering it is a debut, this book is an astounding work. Even when providing essential background and explanations of physics principles, de Becerra manages to keep the reader’s interest hooked — meaning the book is legitimately hard to put down. What the Woods Keep by Katya de Becerra is published by Allen & Unwin. Available now in bookstores. RRP $16.99.

L

ove this lady. She is a true fighter with a million-dollar smile. It is no wonder that Olivia Newton-John’s book Don’t Stop Believin’ will give you an insight to one of Australia’s mega superstars. It is a little hard to believe that her career has spanned over 50 years as she never seems to age. With Grammy Awards to her name, she has also sold over 100 million albums. Probably best remembered for her hits Banks of the Ohio, Xanadu and Physical, it is with the movie Grease where she played shy Sandy, who falls for Danny Zuko (John Travolta), that launched a cult following that is still popular today. Her life has been a series of highs and lows — she has faced health issues that would leave many beaten, but like a true professional Olivia has shown courage during her battles with breast cancer. Her mantra of Don’t Stop Believin’ is synonymous with her approach to life, such as when she set up the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Melbourne. Sharing a story of a brilliant career and such a positive role model from her life is a wondrous journey and one that will leave you a little star struck. Don’t Stop Believin’ is available now in bookstores.

FRESH SOUNDS

REAL GOOD TIME BY JUDAH KELLY

T

he Voice winner Judah Kelly has never doubted his next album would be country. To Kelly, Real Good Time was more about the singer making his first true debut release. While the The Voice winner’s album took only 10 days from beginning to end, this album was recorded from November 2017 until May this year. Kelly says they took their time doing this album and gave the songs a chance to “breathe a bit more”. The album blends country ballads with touches of rock, blues and soul. Kelly was influenced by Motown and Stevie Wonder growing up as well as country music, so this influences Real Good Time as well. Real Good Time is out now through Universal Music.

DOGS AND NEWBORNS INTRODUCING YOUR NEW BABY TO THE FAMILY PET

W

hether you’re having your first child or your third, properly introducing a new baby to your dog is very important. Before bringing home your first baby, your dog might have been treated as the only child all its life and will not immediately understand what’s going on. There is no reason to panic and drop your dog off at the RSPCA, however. You can prepare your dog for the big day in advance and you can control the eventual introduction, paving the way for a lifelong friendship between your child and your dog.

PREPARATION

D-DAY

If possible, and while spending some recovery time with your newborn, have a family member take a used baby blanket or item of clothing home, for your dog to sniff.

Once the baby is home, your dog will be surrounded by new sights, smells and sounds – limit the unfamiliarity as much as possible by introducing your dog to your baby’s scent before coming home for the first time. When you arrive, let your partner enter your home first and greet the dog as normal. Your pooch will have missed you and will need to expend some excited energy before meeting the baby. Swap places with your partner and greet your dog while your partner waits outside with bub. Leash your dog, even if you have no reason to expect a negative reaction (it

will give you more control over the situation). Only then, bring the baby in to meet his / her “fur sibling”. Remain calm and let your dog sniff the baby’s feet and hands, re-familiarising itself with the baby’s smell (avoid immediate face-to-face contact). From here, use your learned commands to control every interaction between your baby and your dog, like making it “sit” or “go”. As time goes on, teach your child how to handle the dog and foster a respectful two-way relationship, ensuring they’ll be BFFs for life.

The Fender Bender Broke My Heart,

6878282aa

In the nine months following the good news, you and your partner have to focus on teaching your dog basic commands and manners (if your pooch isn’t already well trained). Smooth out any undesirable habits, establish ground rules, and make sure your dog will listen to you if you give it a command. Start introducing your dog to baby items, like a stroller or bassinet. This way, your dog will be used to these alien items long before your baby uses them (and will not associate the initial negative feelings with your baby).

MANNERS MAKETH MAN MANNERS ALSO MAKETH THE TRIP

BY TOBI LOFTUS

apan, a country of onsens, temples and delicious food. A country shining under vast neon lights, futuristic technology roaming the streets, and toilets that have a million and one options to flush. It is a country of conflict — the past meeting the future, expansive cities versus stunning natural assets — but there is one thing that makes Japan one of the most welcoming countries I’ve ever been to and that’s the people. Beyond the hustle and bustle that was the crazy tourist areas, lay a culture of politeness and hospitality rarely seen in Western countries such as Australia, England, and the US. People would go out of their way to make sure everything was okay, that we were accommodated and having a good

time — from Airbnb hosts, shop owners, taxi drivers and more, everyone wants to make you feel welcome. A man took 10 minutes out of his time to show us how to use the ticket machines in the Osaka Train Station. A restaurant owner in Kyoto took us on a little walking tour of the area we were in while our food was cooking. It was these little things, these acts of kindness, that made the trip. Of the two weeks I spent in the country last year, one of those weeks was with my partner’s former host family in a town halfway between Osaka and Tokyo. It was the highlight of the trip, not just because I got to see things off the tourist track, but because I got to experience life as a Japanese person would. That included visiting the local temple,

praying to ancestors at the shrine inside the home, eating traditional foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and sleeping on tatami mats. Now, not everyone can be as lucky as I was, but there are many tour companies and Airbnb experiences that will allow you to live like a local. It is well and truly worth looking into as it provides you an insight into the culture you won’t get in a hotel and in the main streets of Tokyo. So, when you travel to Japan, make sure to say konichiwa to a local. If someone comes to you in the street and asks to practise their English with you, just do it. The people are really what makes Japan not just a good destination, but an incredible one.

T

here is a saying about North Stradbroke Island — “Where a trip becomes a tradition” — which rings true for our family. After our first family camping trip on Straddie, we can’t wait to get back. We booked our adventure months in advance, reserving two tent sites side by side at Amity Point campground. Our two boys, aged 4 and 8, were bursting with excitement. Joining us on the trip were good friends who also have two sons (almost exactly the same age as ours). As this was our first family camping experience, we hired the complete tent set-up from Stradbroke 4WD Tours and Camping Holidays and the owner, Paul Mergler, was busy putting up the tents when we arrived. We had one large family tent and two smaller two to three-man tents, along with a large living area made up of two 3m x 3m gazebos. Also included were LED lighting, camp chairs, an esky, bedding, gas stove, pots, pans, plates and cutlery — we only brought sleeping bags, bikes, clothes and food. The great thing about hiring the tents, was packing the cars and checking out on the final day after breakfast with no tents to pack up. The journey to Straddie was super easy (the ferry trip is only 45 minutes) and our adventure began as soon as we set foot ashore. Amity Point campground is known for being family friendly and it was — the check-in was friendly and efficient, our camp site was beachfront (though sheltered by being on the bay-side of the island), and it has a real family feel. The kids roamed relatively freely; they jumped on their bikes and joined the other kids riding around the camp. The facilities were first class, always kept clean and tidy and it never felt overcrowded even during the busy September holidays. The days were spent playing at the various playgrounds at the camping ground and on the beach, going for walks along the jetty to look for the resident dolphin (we saw him once), and riding around on bicycles. Day trips to Point Lookout and Cylinder Beach are amazing and the kids loved the trip to Brown Lake. There is so much to do on Straddie, we only scratched the surface. It was the most amazing, relaxing holiday, and we can’t wait to go back for more.

HEAVEN ON EARTH A RELATIONSHIP BUILT IN FAITH

G

rowing up as part of the same church, Amanda Buckley and Josh Skerman have known each other for quite a while. They ended up in the same group of friends as they grew older and, as Amanda put it, things went from there. Not too long after they started dating and knew each other a bit better, Josh knew it was love and decided to propose. “Josh took me out to his family farm one afternoon. We sat outside with beers and chips and he popped the question as we watched the sun set over the sorghum,” remembered Amanda. Together for two-and-a-half years, the pair tied the knot at the Dalby Presbyterian Church in April this year, taking their vows from scripture. “He’s the most amazing man. I’ve always known him to be the most caring and selfless person, who’ll go out of his way for me and anyone close to him. “We’ve never had a serious argument, because he always wants what’s best for the both of us. He’s certainly one mighty fine husband,” said Amanda, when asked to describe Josh.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds and their guests moved over to the family farm for the reception. Choosing a rustic chic look, the couple utilised the raw beauty of the farm’s shed and decorated it with a mass of fairy lights, DIY gum-leaf chandeliers, and timber, hessian and lace centrepiece decorations. Family is important to Josh and Amanda, so they wanted his niece and nephews in the wedding party. “The youngest wasn’t even walking yet, so he rolled down the aisle on his toy digger. He did it perfectly and calmed a lot of nerves,” said Josh. Amanda said the wedding day was perfect. “All we wanted was a stress-free day, so people could have fun and enjoy each other’s company — and that’s exactly what we got. We never wanted it to end,” she said. The couple said words cannot describe how blessed they felt to have their family and friends be a part of their beginning as husband and wife. “It was such a spectacular day and it

was made even more special, seeing our love for each other supported by all those close to us,” said Josh. Feeling it is an exciting part of getting married, Amanda took Josh’s last name. “I’m recognised as Josh’s wife, which is something to be proud of,” she said. The Skermans believe staying calm is the best advice they can give others. “Planning a wedding can become so stressful but, at the end of the day, you will be married to your best friend and that’s the only reason you’re doing it all for. Everything else is a bonus and any problems during the day make for a great story afterwards,” said Amanda. Straight after the wedding, they honeymooned in the Maldives for 10 days and now have big plans for the future.

HOW TO AVOID A FINANCIAL HANGOVER

While credit cards are convenient, they can be addictive over the Christmas period and undo a well-planned budget. Avoid buying gifts with credit, unless you are going to be able to pay off your card before interest is charged.

4. START PAYING OFF YOUR HOLIDAY NOW

If you’re going away over the Christmas break, try to pay off your accommodation costs in instalments before you leave.

5. BAKE IT OR MAKE IT

T

here’s nothing better than seeing our loved one’s faces light up on Christmas morning when they open their presents. And while giving gifts is a great way to show we care, it’s very easy to spend like crazy. In the lead up to Christmas with so many additional expenses to account for, careful budgeting is essential. But, with a little bit of thought and planning, it is possible to have a jolly Christmas without putting a strain on your budget.

TIPS FOR CONTROLLING SILLY SEASON SPENDING:

1. GET EVERYONE TO BRING A PLATE Hosting Christmas lunch is expensive but you can spread the cost by asking everyone to bring a dish.

2. BE A SAVVY SHOPPER

Set a budget for presents and stick to it. Instead of buying for everyone why not organise a ‘Secret Santa’? Also use catalogues and shop online to find the best deals.

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

If you have a talent for craft or baking you can create inexpensive presents such as home-made fruit cakes, rocky road, jams and relishes.

6. BUDGET FOR NEW YEAR EXPENSES

When doing your Christmas budget, don’t forget to factor in some of the big expenses you’ll be facing in the New Year. If you’ve got children, be mindful that all those back to school costs are just around the corner. You’ll also have a new round of bills starting to roll in, such as rates, electricity and phone bills.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. We have partnered with AMP, Australia’s largest financial planning network, to give you access to some of the most reliable and competitive financial products and solutions while maintaining the friendly personal attention you only get from a locally-owned and operated business. YOUR CHECKLIST FOR FINDING THE RIGHT FAMILY LAWYER BY KARA BEST, LEGAL PRACTICE DIRECTOR AND ACCREDITED FAMILY LAW SPECIALIST, BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW

W

hen relationships break down, our clients are often seeking the assistance of a solicitor for the first time (other than a conveyance or a will). For that reason, I appreciate that it’s hard to know what to expect and many of our clients have come to us after being disappointed by a previous solicitor. To help in the search for the right person to protect you and your future, I’ve identified what I think you should be demanding of your family law solicitor.

EXPERTISE

The complexity of family law demands specialisation and experience.

COMMUNICATION

An exceptional capacity to communicate — making the complex more understandable.

HONESTY

EXPECTATION

It is reasonable to want to know what to expect and to hold your solicitor to that advice. It’s important that your solicitor has the respect of the Court and colleagues — it makes a material difference.

PRAGMATISM

It is futile to win the battle, but lose the war. Incurring disproportionate legal fees to what you stand to achieve is a poor outcome.

RAPPORT

A capacity to build a genuine rapport — you’re trusting your most intimate of details and your future with this person after all.

AVAILABILITY

Your family life doesn’t stop after business hours, so a good solicitor appreciates that there will be after-hours contact, and a need to respond urgently if required.

VALUE

This is hard to measure, but given the

often significant cost of legal advice and representation, it’s important that you feel in control of your legal fees and that you are achieving a positive outcome.

TOUGH LOVE

Beware the solicitor that actively intensifies your feelings of anger. A good lawyer will challenge you to reduce conflict with your former partner if possible and will make you acutely aware of the long-term implications of maintaining any negative emotion for all of you.

JAN 20 – FEB 18

IT’S IN THE STARS SCORPIO

OCT 23 – NOV 21

In the lead-up to the festive season, the days are flying by quicker than you realise. This might put the usually organised Scorpio into a bit of a tailspin, but don’t panic! Circle a date in the calendar for shopping, then take to it with vigour and remember to spoil the special people in your life.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 22 – DEC 21

You’ve already wrapped the Christmas presents and picked your colour scheme for this year’s festivities. Your immediate future holds a month of spreading tinsel and joy, even if it’s only November! Rave reviews at work will leave you feeling like the cat that caught the canary — big smiles, you deserve this!

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 19

November might see you a little frazzled and you might feel like locking horns with someone at work or at home. Tensions might be running high right now, but will be smoothed over by early December.

You’re ready to take on the world this month — whether it’s joining a new gym or smashing goals at work. If you’re looking to change your career or move up the ladder, now is the time! Listen to what the universe is telling you.

PISCES

FEB 19 – MAR 20

If hanging around the house all day has you feeling a little down, find a dream destination and take to the skies. Swimming in the same old fish bowl day in and day out can make any Pisces yawn with boredom, so make sure your passport is up to date.

ARIES

MAR 21 – APR 19

Spring is a great time to get your body into shape for summer. Your appearance is important to you, so get back out there and give yourself a mental and physical workout. You might just meet your soul mate.

TAURUS

APR 20 – MAY 20

It’s time to plan your next big adventure. If you’re thinking of furthering your career, extra study will be beneficial. Investigate courses offered at various teaching institutions and pick the right one for you — a masters degree in business, or a certificate in catering?

GEMINI

MAY 21 – JUN 20

Success is so near, you can taste it! People at work are starting to notice your skills, which is fantastic.

You’ve worked hard for these accolades, so receive them with grace and a killer smile.

CANCER

JUN 21 – JUL 22

Think cute and cuddly this month — perhaps there’s a new family member addicted to your presence. Cancer is the star sign of those who love family, love and social events, but don’t party too hard or you’ll be hiding in your shell like a hermit crab! You are fiercely defiant and you have an uncanny ability to bounce back.

LEO

JUL 23 – AUG 22

Leos are known for their quirky humour and like spending time with like-minded people. As intensely social cats, being around family is a must this festive season. Perhaps it’s time to play with that ball of string and chase those coloured streamers?

VIRGO

AUG 23 – SEPT 22

As a new chapter in your life begins, you’ll hear the beckoning call of faraway lands. Whether you’re on the journey solo or with someone special, it promises to be the greatest time of your life. You will soon make yourself part of any community and they’ll be the better off for it.

LIBRA

SEPT 23 – OCT 22

Things are hectic right now and you may be having trouble balancing your personal life and work life. Take solace in the fact that those at home will be right behind you every step of the way — just remember to give them a little TLC every now and again and you’ll have the best of both worlds.
