heart THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VICTORY AND DEFEAT BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

W

hat an incredible woman, I think after my talk with Ezria ‘Ezy’ Parsons. I reflect how the world can throw anything at some people, yet have no effect upon their outlook on life, their unshakable positive attitude. Some people are made of a rare and unbreakable metal, yet are not cold to the touch, or too hard or unyielding. A precious metal which adds value to the lives of all it comes in contact with. Ezy, I decide, is made of such a metal. The passionate coach of the Toowoomba Mountaineers women's team grew up a world away in a small Florida town, USA. From an early age, Ezy’s metal has known the touch of fire and hammer. Her father passed away when she was three months old, tragically leaving her mother to raise eight children. Showing true grit, her mother decided to keep the family together, come what may. “She could’ve dropped us off here and there, but she decided to keep us together,” said Ezy. Her grandmother, aunt and older siblings helped out, while her mother worked two jobs to support them. Being the youngest, Ezy often followed her older siblings around. “I was a bit of a tomboy. I wanted to play football and baseball with them,” she told me. When she was about 12 years old, she started following her siblings to the basketball court. This was when she started to develop

8 | August 2018

the skills Toowoomba eventually became accustomed to seeing on display so regularly over the years. “My siblings and I were all competitive and I just picked it up for fun,” she said. I asked Ezy whether she was ever confronted with the idea that basketball was a men’s sport. She told me the sports which were traditionally considered ‘men’s’ sports, were dominant in her town but this did not stop her or faze her. “When we were girls, basketball was always a boys’ sport, but I didn’t care what kind of sport it was. If it sparked my interest, I played it more and more.” In her senior year of high school, her team made it to the state championships for the first time. Again tragedy struck Ezy’s family, when one of her brothers was shot on the day of the semi-finals. “We had to play the next day,” remembered Ezy.. Ever her staunchest supporters, her mother and her family urged Ezy to play, despite all that had happened. “So I ran on the court and played and, even though we lost, I played a pretty awesome game.” Ezy was voted the co-MVP after the game. “That was unheard of, for someone of the losing team to get co-MVP,” she explained. It wasn’t until scholarships started coming in, that she started looking at basketball as a conduit to the future. “I took it more seriously and started putting extra work and time into it.” A basketball scholarship offered her the

chance to complete her degree. “I used my skills in basketball to get a free education. I couldn’t afford it, my mum couldn’t afford it. So when the scholarship offers started coming in, I took it.” While in college, she fell in love with basketball all over again. It eventually led her to a training camp in the WNBA, where she dislocated her shoulder in the third round. Playing in the WNBA was not to be, but this didn’t buckle Ezy. After the injury, an old team mate from Toowoomba persuaded Ezy to visit her in Australia. “I just packed up and came, and I fell in love with the place,” said Ezy. Despite not having any intention to stay, she did. “I just took the opportunity to come see my friend and it ended up with me playing basketball for half the year, and going home to see my family for the other half of the year.” After travelling between Australia and the US for a while, she was offered contracts to work in Australia and Toowoomba became a home away from home. Over the next couple of years, she would play for the Mountaineers before eventually being asked to coach her beloved team mates. Despite having a couple of wins with the Toowoomba Mountaineers, Ezy said the highlight of her coaching career so far was taking the under-12 teams at South West Metro Pirates from almost dead-last to second in Queensland. “We had no girls to register, so we waived the fee and invited any girl who wanted to play. Half of them couldn’t catch or dribble, but we

You don’t have to be a product of your environment.” EZRIA ‘EZY’ PARSONS

had them out there actually learning the game and succeeding.” Today, she has big plans for her club.. “I heard Toowoomba used to be really competitive and I’m trying to rebuild that again to where it’s all about commitment to the sport,” she said. Interest in basketball, particularly among children and women, is increasing. I asked her what she would say to kids, specifically girls, who are a bit shy about trying basketball for the first time. “I would say, give it a try. Don’t ever be embarrassed about what you can’t do. Just work on the things you can control and improve, and I guarantee you will succeed in anything, not just basketball.” Ezy wants to help disadvantaged children. “I come from a troubled area. I could’ve been a statistic, but instead of that I use my story to let kids know you don’t have to be a product of your environment.” She wants children to know, even if their journey might take a little more work, or a different or longer route, they can go places. “You just have to be a good person and work on it. Don’t expect anything and work for everything.” What did I tell you? A rare metal indeed, tested several times over and resulting in the bright sheen we see today. In the words of legendary US basketball coach, Don Haskins: “It’s not about talent, it’s about heart.”

It’s never too late BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

A TOOWOOMBA GRAN’S JOURNEY OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT

E

lectric. From her hair to her toes, Anne Brunner is most definitely electric. Her confidence and determination is a palpable charge waiting to spark an intense drive in anyone who ventures close enough. I feel the static as she talks me though her journey — from taking her first step into a gym, to stepping off stage at the annual Fernwood Fitness 12-week challenge as the national winner. She tells me it all started with a photo. “There is a photo of me and my grandson. It made me realise I had to change my life, so I could be here for my grandchildren and see them grow up. I just thought ‘this is it’.” This life-changing decision happened in October 2016 and, as Anne informs me, it’s been a journey of not just physical fitness, but also of personal growth and mental health. Throughout her life, Anne has been a dutiful wife, a loving mother and a caring daughter. She raised three children, and is a proud grandmother to three grandchildren. She has had to say goodbye to a father that clearly meant the world to her, and she lovingly takes care of her aging mother. Anne has always taken care of other people. Now, at age 57, Anne tells me it not only feels great taking care of herself as well, but she emphatically believes it is absolutely essential to the happiness and lives of her family.

10 | August 2018

“If women nurture themselves, it affects everybody in the family. It is such a positive thing,” she said. Anne chose to join an all-women’s gym to kick off her life-change. “That first step, I still maintain, is the best step I’ve ever taken for my life and my health.” Anne firmly believes the hardest part of making a change, is that first step. She also believes once you take that step, all you have to do is keep going. “You just have to turn up. Be consistent and persistent, and the rest will take care of itself.” Anne admitted she’s not a morning person, especially on cooler winter days. Like many women, she had the habit of setting an alarm and just turning it off in the morning. This changed when Anne stuck a big picture of an orange alarm clock to her mirror door. “It says ‘Get up and move!’, and it is the first thing I see when I wake up. As soon as my alarm goes off, I see that, and I move.” We all have different things to encourage us. Every day, Anne wears a gold bracelet inscribed with the word ‘persistence’ as a reminder to keep going. “I know ladies who say ‘I have to do this for my children’, but the main thing is, you have to do it for yourself. Everything else will benefit from that.” When Anne joined the gym, she started a slow, six-week journey that taught her about nutrition and food. She

went on to participate in the 2017 Fernwood Fitness 12-week challenge. “In that challenge, I learned a lot about myself.” In the sixth week of the challenge, Anne fractured her sternum, but went on to complete the full 12 weeks of the challenge regardless. “I believe it’s in some of the lowest times in life that you learn the strongest lessons about yourself, and I realised how determined I am.” Anne could have thrown in the towel

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

feature | style

and nobody would have blamed her, but she wanted to finish what she started. “My late father always told us ‘if you’re going to do something, to it properly or don’t do it at all’, and I still love him for that.” Even though Anne lost much weight during this first challenge, she knew she still had a lot to improve on. “I just knew, I’m not finished yet.” This year, 2057 women from all across Australia participated in the Fernwood Fitness 12-week challenge. “This time round, I wanted to focus on my fitness. It’s not just about weight loss, it’s about an overall improvement.” Anne set out to improve her fitness and strength. She threw everything she had at this challenge and, in the end, it paid off. At the annual gala dinner, in Melbourne Anne was crowned national champion and had lost a further 17.2kg. She credits her personal trainer, Mel Anttila, and says she couldn’t have done it without her. Anne said this challenge was never about being competitive. It was about being fitter and healthier. “I set out to be the best version of me I could be, so that was all I was focussed on. Everyone had things to work on.” Anne’s improvement throughout the challenge was remarkable. At the fitness test in the first week of the challenge,

www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Anne managed 15 sit-ups. By the end, she could do over a 100 without rest. “My motto was, and still is, ‘I can and I will’.” When I asked her about how she feels, being picked as the national winner out of so many women, she said: “Everyone that takes the time to better themselves, is a winner. It was never about winning.” For Anne, the improvement in her strength is a reward in itself.

‘‘

I can and I will.” ANNE BRUNNER

“I can’t get over the strength I’ve gained. I now feel fitter and stronger than I have in many years, and age doesn’t worry me.” Through the competition, Anne has come to realise how beneficial weight training is for women, especially with respects to improved bone density. When she first walked into her gym, Anne had a bad right knee. “For many years, I couldn’t ride a bike with my family because of the pain in my knee. Now I do RPM regularly, because I can.” Anne said a lot of women have ‘can’ts’. “My ‘can’t’ used to be ‘I can’t because of my knee’,” she explained. “You just have

to turn your can’ts into can’s.” Anne is thrilled to be able to do things with her family that she previously couldn’t do. “I recently had a boxing class with my daughter. I just looked at her and said ‘who would’ve thought’.” At a recent family day in the park, Anne raced her grandson and, she says, this was one of her favourite days ever. “He had a head-start, and my husband and I raced him. He enjoyed it so much, and we all just laughed and laughed. I thought, ‘this is what it’s all about’.” Now Anne is healthier, she can enjoy these moments even more. “It’s never too late. That’s what I want to resonate with ladies.” Anne thinks some younger women have noticed her and have thought ‘if she can do it, I can too’. “I think that’s really cool. I asked Anne whether she thinks this lifestyle change, and taking care of your health, means you can never again have pizza and beer. She laughed and said she’d just been out for lunch with friends before coming to meet me. “You have to live life too. Everyone has to learn balance.” Anne said she doesn’t believe in a completion date when it comes to her health, and she plans to keep improving herself every day. “I’m not done yet.”

WHO’S NEW IN TOWN Style meets Rebecca Findlay of Relax Body and Beauty at 343 Ruthven St

Where are you from? I am a local born and bred. Most of my family is still in Toowoomba, however my immediate family have all relocated to the sunny Hervey Bay. What’s your beauty background? I completed my studies in 2013; before that I had many years in pharmacy. I have always had a passion for people and this is probably my favourite part of my job, meeting people, getting to know my clients and creating great relationships. Tell us a bit about yourself and your family. I reside in Westbrook with my husband and two kids aged 13 and 11, with my beautiful sooky chocolate labrador. Most of our weekends involve kids’ sport, hockey, soccer and go-kart racing! And catching up with friends and housework! Family is very important to me and my weekends are precious; with both children attending highschool next year, I wish time would slow down! What does ‘beauty’ mean to you? I have actually written a blog on this very subject on my website as a beauty therapist — a lot of our focus is on the aesthetics and external appearances. However... to me, beauty is more than skin deep. This is a firm belief of mine, and the basis of my business. I love helping my clients relax and feel beautiful, and of course having great brows, lashes and a glowing complexion can help! What was the driver behind opening your own salon? Family time and freedom, also financial gain. I am also very independent and like being in control, although I sometimes miss being part of a team in a salon environment. I enjoy the challenges of working for yourself and there is always something new to work on, whether it is a new treatment, marketing, financial book work, promotions, business strategies etc. What sets your salon apart from others? I believe it is the personal yet professional approach I take toward my clients. The difference when coming to a small owner/operator business, is you get 100 per cent care and commitment every time. Because I know without my clients I have no business, they mean the world to me and I hope that is portrayed through my service and care toward them.

What are your favourite bush walks around Toowoomba?

VOX POPS

LETITIA ROBARTS

I love to pack a picnic and head to Crows Nest Falls. The trails are really well maintained and you traverse through a mix of beautiful scenery. The waterfall is quite spectacular, especially after rain. On a hot day, you can paddle or swim in the rock pools.

RIC CARLSSON

I enjoy brisk walks up Tabletop. There is a degree of athleticism required for the last scale to the top. It’s energising and you get a real sense of achievement. The views from the top of the mountain are fantastic. I use Tabletop as part of my training program in preparation for tackling the Camino Trail next year.

ANNAMARIA BANHAZI

My favourite Toowoomba walk is the Picnic Point loop, which covers 5km of mixed terrain. It’s everything you want in a walk. It’s safe, has a mix of terrain (including up and downhill), which is good for developing strength and, of course, there are lovely views at the start and finish.

BREAK A LEG! TOOWOOMBA LOCALS HIT THE STAGE

T

his August, 21 Toowoomba locals will be performing at the Empire Theatre as part of the chorus for Gilbert & Sullivan’s Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse! As part of Opera Queensland’s 2018 community initiative, Project G&S, auditions were held all over regional Queensland, with more than 8,000 km covered by the Opera Queensland team. In the end, 10 local men and 11 local

women were selected to take part in the Toowoomba performance at Empire Theatre. “This year’s choruses are made up of individuals from vast backgrounds; from a marine animal trainer at Sea World, to speech pathologists, motorbike-riding psychologists, teachers and environmental activists”, said Opera Queensland’s Head of Learning, Regional and Community, Mark Taylor.

Over an eight week period, the lucky 21 took part in a free training program and polished their skills in preparation for the big night. They will be performing alongside popular Australian theatre and opera stars, including Bryan Probets, Christine Johnston, and Natalie Christie Peluso. In Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse!, follow the hilariously entertaining tale of Robin Oakapple, a shy farmer in a seaside village wishing to marry the enchanting Rose Maybud. This gothic horror story takes a dark turn when Robin’s terrible secret is revealed: he is cursed! If he doesn’t commit a dastardly crime every day, he will suffer a torturous death. Having escaped his fate thus far by living in disguise, he has lived a law-abiding and virtuous life. Now his identity has been revealed, he is bound to obey his family’s curse. In a village littered with bridesmaids, where good and evil goes hand-in-hand and galleries come alive, entertainment will not be in short supply. Bring the family and stay for the final curtain call, in celebration of local talent and great theatre.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NUISANCE

T

here is something to be said for having a party at home. For many people, it is a chance to gather their loved ones in one spot for a great meal, a couple of drinks and a truckload of laughs. It’s as much a chance to be social as a chance to save money. Having a party at home means you don’t need take a cab home and leave your car behind. It means cheaper drinks and favourite foods. It means you get to dictate the soundtrack and menu for the evening, and it means you can do it all in your favourite pair of baggy pants, if you want to. If you’re the industrious type, you might be putting together a new snack sensation to woo the masses. If you can’t be bothered, you might tell your friends to bring their own, while your only job is to make sure the barbecue stays lit. Whether you’re preparing to celebrate your birthday or the queen’s, there are some things you’ll have to keep in mind. Not the least of which, is noise. Consider whether your property is large enough to accommodate the size of your group, whether your outdoor area is right next to your neighbour’s bedroom window or not, and whether the party can be moved inside if necessary. Keep in mind that, in Queensland, any excessive noise can be reported at any time of day and bring the police knocking. Also check your local council’s curfew while planning. A good strategy is to talk to your neighbours beforehand and give them your contact details. If they know what to expect, they might not be as cranky later on; they might even make plans to go out themselves. At the very least, your neighbours will be able to call you (instead of the police) if your party bothers them. Prevention is better than cure. The second item to turn your mind to, is fire and smoke. If you have a fire pit, or you will be grilling your meat over open flame, you must adhere to fire restrictions. Make sure the fire is contained within a proper fire pit, or well-constructed barbecue, and keep in mind that a fire ban might be in effect. If you stick to the unspoken rules of civility and good neighbourly conduct, and pay attention to your fire, there is no reason why your party shouldn’t be a great success. Cue the Facebook and Instagram posts widely declaring [insert your name here] as the party monarch of the century. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

A WINTER SHOES ALL Limited Time Only

Have you always been artistically inclined? I have always had an interest in drawing and art. I was lucky to grow up in a creative home, where equal value was placed upon art and creativity compared to other academic pursuits, so I was encouraged to create from an early age. What medium do you use for your base illustrations – is it by hand or digitally? As much as I love traditional hand drawing, I am thoroughly in love with the vast spectrum of possibilities you can create on a screen using nothing but a program and a stylus. How do design ideas come to you? Everything I draw is inspired by my favourite literary or pop culture references. Some are mash-ups of both. I keep a notebook where I scribble down any ideas I get when I read a meaningful quote or see a memorable scene.

How did you come up with the idea of using wood instead of the traditional card bookmarks? Back when I used paint instead of a tablet it was much cheaper to buy large pieces of ply than it was to buy a canvas from an art store, so I have always loved putting art onto the natural texture of timber. Can you walk us through the process of creating a new woodmark from start to finish? Firstly I consult my list of inspiration. I choose the quote, line, character etc that I am most excited to create, then I draw up the design on my tablet. The designs are then printed onto ethically and sustainably sourced timber that is about the thickness of a credit card and very pliable. The timber sheets are then cut into woodmark size. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

A CELEBRATION OF DIVERSITY

C

elebrating its 13th year, the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival is set to hit Queens Park on Sunday, August 12. Under the ‘One World, Many Faces’ theme, the TLC Festival celebrates the diverse languages and cultures of the Toowoomba region. Participants from south Queensland will showcase talents, foods and colours from across the globe. This family-friendly day out will be filled with over 65 performances on three stages from schools, community groups and professional artists, as well

as cultural interest displays, international food stalls, camel rides, kids activities, health and wellness, and other information sessions with various service providers. The organisers of the TLC Festival say the aim is to bring together different organisations within the Toowoomba region, to support and encourage a sense of belonging and community. The event achieved record attendance when celebrating its 10 year anniversary, with over 18,000 people attending. Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength, with

ONE WORLD, MANY FACES over 22,000 people expected to attend this year. Take this day to learn about other cultures, religions, nationalities, languages and backgrounds, while sharing your own in the process. If you can’t travel the globe right now, the TLC Festival will bring the globe to you this August. If you’re interested in doing more than taking in the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes on the day, you can contact the Toowoomba International Multicultural Society about being an entertainer, stall holder, or volunteer, at tlcfestival@tims.com.au.

ARE YOU LIVING A LIFE THAT BRINGS YOU JOY?

F

or many we are stuck in a cycle: serving others, continuously saying yes to things that do not bring us joy. So what are we really investing our time in? And is it making us happy? Sit down and see where you are investing your time. Seriously, sit down and write a list. Does it serve you? Does it add value and joy to your life? Why are you really doing what you are doing? Guilt, to prove something, control? You will be shocked to see how much time you are wasting on activities and people that do not bring you joy. De-clutter your mind and organise your life. Simply moving the mental and physical energy around you can create space for things that bring you joy. De-clutter things that are holding you back. Old clothing, expired food, old paper work and broken items around the home. It does not need to be a new year, a new season or a new week to bring a new you to fruition. It just needs to be a realisation that old habits are not serving you and that a new you will bring you so much more. A new you, a more aligned you, can conquer so much more and be a more joyful, generous person to those that you truly value. 22 | August 2018

BRING SOME SPARKLE TO YOUR WARDOBE

T

ired of your winter wardrobe and dark colours but it’s not quite time to bring out the sundresses? Maybe it’s time to bring some sparkle back! Sequins are set to be on trend this year, and they’re not just for young things decked head-to-toe in glitter hitting the town. Sparkles can be as moderated or excessive as the occasion calls for and as you prefer. While wearing a full dress covered in sequins is fabulous for the evening, you may get a few strange looks at work. Tone the look down by pairing a show-stopping skirt with a plain white blouse or shirt on top of a pair of cute wedges. There are also demure jackets and coats available with sequined detailing on the shoulders if you want just that little bit of shimmer without being the centre of the room.

Childless, not Worthless Not being a mother does not make you less of a woman BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

S

ome women simply know they don’t want to be mothers. They have reasons varying from scarcity of resources, to hereditary diseases and overflowing orphanages. Others want nothing more than to be mothers, then find out they (or their partners) are biologically incapable. These women are faced with a whole new set of double standards and societal prejudices. A woman in her early 20’s seeking sterilisation will probably be told things like “you’re too young to make this decision” and to “wait until after you’ve

had one or two kids” by her gynaecologist, parents, friends, and even complete strangers. “You will regret your decision,” they will say. “You will change your mind,” they will opine. Saying these things means questioning her capacity to make life-changing choices, despite being an adult. It presumes that the woman who doesn’t want children, doesn’t know herself and doesn’t know what she wants. They seem to think they know her better than she knows herself. It implies that a woman who doesn’t

want to be a mother, is somehow not natural and cannot therefore be taken seriously. “When are you two finally going to have a baby?,” hears the woman who cannot naturally conceive and hasn’t told anyone but her husband. She feels betrayed by her own body, while the world at large asks ignorant and insensitive questions, because...“well, you’re married...why don’t you have

children?” “It’s the next step,” they declare, as if a woman’s life is set out in a plan she can download from library archives. Not being able to have a child of your own body has some women questioning their worth, their marriage and their purpose. Considering options like IVF draws unwanted, unasked for, and sometimes mortifying, opinions. These women have

to listen to off-hand comments like “you could always adopt” from people who had no trouble giving birth to their own children and could not possibly fathom the disappointment. Statements like “you don’t know what you’re missing” and “there is no greater joy in life than having a child”, insinuate the life of a woman who doesn’t have kids is somehow worth less. Is somehow less fulfilling. Is somehow tainted and

lacking. Not having a child does not make you less of a woman, and not wanting one in the first place does not make you a monster. In a TED Talk published on December 7, 2017, Christen Reighter said: “I’ve always believed that having children was an extension of womanhood, not the definition.” You cannot be a mother without also being a woman, but you are a woman regardless of whether you are a mother or not. Your worthiness and identity as a spouse, an adult or a woman, is in no way tied to your uterus. Society will one day catch on and realise a single fact: whether a woman wants a child or not, when a woman will have a child or not, and how a woman will have a child or not, is absolutely up to the woman concerned and is not up for discussion, unless that woman asks for an opinion.

DOES INNER BEAUTY EQUAL OUTER BEAUTY? BY REMY RIPPON, NEWS CORP AUSTRALIA

E

nlightening or empty promises? The latest treatments and elixirs are as much about what you can’t see as what you can, but do they deliver? Beauty is more than skin deep. While it’s a phrase we’ve all heard before, it couldn’t be more fitting for now. These days, beauty companies are as concerned about what goes inside the bottle as what’s going on inside your body, from gut health to our state of mind. Naturally, as zesty chemical peels, Botox and fillers become commonplace, the beauty pendulum has swung to cater

to a more holistic approach in line with the current wellness Zeitgeist. Put simply, if your skincare isn’t served with a side of wisdom, then is it really delivering all it could be? It’s no secret that skincare has long been rooted in ritualism. From the resourcefulness of ancient Egyptians (think Cleopatra’s milk baths and kohl) to the meticulous regimens of geisha and, most recently, the laborious 10-step routines popularised by Korean skincare aficionados, beauty has always been about more than outward results. Now more than ever we’re longing for a sense of balance beyond the surface level, and if the side effect happens to be smooth,

glowing skin, then all the better. “Inner beauty, as cliched as it sounds, is a feeling and it changes the skin,” says Fumi Yamamoto, founder of Zen Facial and Sydney’s fairy godmother of inner and outer alchemy. Her facials, which start with an abdominal diagnosis (involving gentle prodding of the stomach) and move on to deep-tissue facial massage with little recourse to products, have gained popularity among models, beauty editors and overworked executives. Yamamoto says her facials are more like a

“structural renovation”, and combine alternative therapy practices such as aromatherapy, lymphatic draining and reflexology. No tingly peels or fancy light machines here. Despite the often floaty connotations associated with intangible elements of skincare, beauty brands are increasingly focused on delving beyond the surface, too. A poster girl for the ‘inner health equals outer beauty’ movement, Miranda Kerr infuses rose quartz into every product within her skincare line, Kora, for its “gentle, soothing energy”.

The brand’s Noni Radiant Eye Oileven has a nifty in-built rose-quartz ball applicator, which, if nothing else, feels soothing and distributes the exact amount of product. According to researchers at Japanese heritage brand Shiseido, the skin, mind and body are intrinsically linked. “We’ve studied how beauty emerges from within our skin and, to do so, we studied beyond cellular biology,” says Nancy Woo, national training manager at Shiseido. The brand’s latest elixir, Essential Energy Moisturizing Cream, incorporates patented ReNeura technology, which is a fancy term for the way cells communicate and transmit signals to help repair and regenerate. Likewise, a handful of beauty brands, from niche to blockbuster, are focusing their energy on, well, energy. At the forefront of skincare technology, Lancôme launched Énergie de Vie a few years back and it quickly became a best-seller for the brand. Meanwhile, Yuni, an emerging beauty brand that is stocked at Sephora, is steeped in mindful beauty.

SPRING IN YOUR STEP

I

Beautifully crafted Jewellery & Watches for every occasion!

www.prouds.com.au

30 | August 2018

t’s about this time every year that I start to feel excited about spring in Toowoomba. The weather is starting to warm up, we are surrounded by beautiful blooms and our city is a hive of activity and anticipation. Our region comes into its own from the start of September with a plethora of event opportunities none more relevant than the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, a cultural party featuring a floral parade, local food and produce, regional wine, entertainment and all things spring. It is events like the Carnival of Flowers that are so important to drive tourism to our region. They take a huge amount of planning and require ongoing support from both the business and wider communities to continue to grow and benefit our economy. An event of this nature creates a ‘reason’ for people to travel to Toowoomba and the greater surrounds. In 2017, over 250,000 people attended the 10-day event, an amazing result that has taken over 60 years to build. However, we can’t just rely on Carnival to be the sole tourism focus; it is up to individuals to have the drive and passion to challenge the status quo and continue to develop new opportunities and new ‘reasons’ to promote visitation. I also challenge businesses and local councils to support these new initiatives as they very well could be the next ‘big event’ for the Darling Downs. Toowoomba Polo, Diner En Blanc, Hampton Festival and Easter Vintage Festival are all examples of events which have been started to compliment and further develop our event space. These opportunities are not without risk and it is a sad but true fact that if they aren’t well supported through attendance and sponsorship they won’t stay in our region. So, let’s give people some more ‘reasons’ to visit Toowoomba. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

CREATING AN IMPROVED SELF BY LISA MACHIN, STYLE COLUMNIST

‘N

ew you’…. I don’t love the concept. I mean, we can’t shed our skin can we? Those spots will still be there, no matter how much concealer we plaster on. I much prefer the notion of ‘improved you’. So as we step gingerly out of the winter’s oppressive frosts and a little closer to that freshness of spring, here’s something to think about. If you’re into self-improvement… rather than starting completely from scratch, there are a few simple tricks you can start to implement. Take it from me, a completely unqualified advice giver, who has learnt through trial, error and sheer determination!

32 | August 2018

1) Make a list of your strengths Knowing what your best characteristics are and continuing to develop them keeps your self-esteem up and helps build a solid foundation for the best version of yourself you can be. 2) Make a list of your dark traits These can be anything from a bad temper, laziness, a tendency not to go to football training…or anything else you have noticed about yourself that you’re less than thrilled with. Remember this list isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about what to keep an eye on. Self-awareness is half the battle.

3) Change your behaviour Two words: baby

steps! This week did you think before snapping back at someone? Did you set three alarms to beat that laziness and actually get up for your morning run? Well, then congratulate yourself. Keeping a little tally of small wins (a large sheet of butcher’s paper on your bedroom wall is ideal) really helps teach us that we can change our behaviour if we put our mind to it and chip away slowly.

EMBRACING EVERY ASPECT OF YOU BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, STYLE COLUMNIST

T

houghts of attending the gym at ungodly hours, spending crazy amounts of money on beauty and always having to look and feel amazing. But the idea of ‘a new you’ shouldn’t be hard. At Food For Life we believe it means embracing every aspect of you and letting it shine. Health isn’t just about how you look on the outside, it’s how you feel emotionally, physically and spiritually. It’s about living in the moment. Embracing the now. Cherishing what we have. Most people have heard that when we are stressed our cortisol levels increase. On the micro scale this means that when we put more stress on our bodies, whether that be emotional or

physical like a hard gym workout, our bodies create more ‘free radicals’. And when there are too many free radicals they start attacking any other weaknesses in our bodies. We become more fatigued, suffer inflammation and our metabolism slows. Therefore, by stressing about trying to improve we suffer. So, when we learn to relinquish this need to control and restrict and consider appreciating what we have, our body’s innate intelligence does what it is designed to do. As long as we are feeding our bodies real and balanced foods and moving our bodies for health in a way we enjoy, our bodies will do the rest. So next time you think about the new you, don’t look outward, look inward.

COOKING UP A STORM Some basic tips and the right attitude can make you a better cook

F

or many, ‘cooking’ means a sad-looking microwave meal, or a passable roast lamb at Christmas. It is a lamentable chore to get through most nights (if not every night) and they have no passion for it. For others, cooking is an expression of themselves, and an opportunity develop their skills. If you are one of the latter, this is for you. If you’d like to be a better cook...

Pick a dish you like to make. Perhaps you think your soufflé is already pretty good, but would like to make it the best in the business. The object of the game is to pick something you have confidence in making, and to perfect it. Only then can you “level up” to something a bit newer and more exciting.

...BUY THE GOOD STUFF

Don’t be cheap. No need to buy Wyke Farms Cheddar (at around $200 per pound), but buying Tasty Cheese at your local grocery store will not do. Buy the right ingredients, of high(-ish) quality, and you will be amazed at the difference in taste and consistency.

...USE THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Make sure you have at least the essential tools in your kitchen. You can expand your tool army as your skills improve and your projects become more complicated. If the recipe calls for two wooden spoons, use two wooden spoons.

...TEST YOURSELF (AGAIN, AND AGAIN)

Invite your family and friends over for the déjeuner of their lives. This is your moment! Okay, the first time might not be perfect, but that’s alright. You’ll keep going until you nail it. Remember: practice makes perfect. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

BROWS BEFORE BROS BEAUTY SPECIALIST TENNIELLE COPSON

Eyebrows: the one thing you can get into shape without exercising

N

ever underestimate the power of perfectly defined brows to help to frame your face and to bring out your eyes. Here are some techniques to fuller, natural-looking brows.

HOW TO SHAPE YOUR EYEBROWS

Step 1. The start of your eyebrows should be in line with your nose. To find, simply hold your brush in a straight line against the corner of your nose, through the inner corner of your eye and into the eyebrow. Mark this spot with a brow pencil. Step 2. To mark where the highest part of

36 | August 2018

the eyebrow arch should be you need to be looking straight in the mirror. Then, using your brush, measure a straight line from the corner of your nose, through the centre of your pupil and into the brow. Step 3. To locate where your eyebrow should end, place your brush at a 45-degree angle starting from the corner of the nose to the outer corner of your eye.

HOW TO GROOM YOUR EYEBROWS

Step 1. Now that you have determine the shape of your eyebrows, it’s time to tidy them up. Begin by brushing the hair up using a spoolie brush. This

helps to detect where the hair is uneven. Step 2. Lightly fill in any sparse areas with a brow pencil that best matches your natural brows. Remember to use short dash-like strokes to mimic your natural hairs. Or alternatively use an angled brush to press powder into the brow to define the shape. Step 3. Brush through your brows again with the spoolie brush to blend out the colour and soften any harsh lines. Step 4. To set the look and hold the hairs in place, comb through brows with a gel.

GET READY FOR THE CARNIVAL I

t’s almost that time of year again, when the buses arrive and the flowers bloom and the excitement can nearly be felt in the air! Our annual Carnival of Flowers is almost on top of us, but right now in preparation The Chronicle has opened their Garden Competition and anybody can participate. Last year saw a myriad of wonderful gardens for judges, residents, and visitors alike to enjoy and this year is anticipated to be no different.

While entries have now closed, there is still much perusing and deciding to be done by our judges before the official awards night at City Golf Club on Wednesday, September 19. In the meantime, there will be an exciting launch event at Inbound on Friday, August 10, where you can find out who the judges are and discover more about what makes The Chronicle Garden Competition so great. For more details, visit thechronicle.com.au.

FANCIFUL FRIDAY As romantic as movies can make it seem, the past wasn’t all that great for women BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

Y

ou’re having tea when you hear your gal pal muse: “I was born in the wrong era.” Yes, you think. Early 19th century fashion was very dramatic, men stood when ladies walked in the room, people read poetry and took long walks together, and everyone owned horses. What a romantic time to be alive. Your fanciful daydreaming sees you sipping tea in bone china cups, wearing silk gloves and overlooking several acres of immaculately manicured lawn, while discreetly and shyly eyeing the handsome gentleman training one of your horses. He courts you. He reads poetry and plays the harp. Finally, after months of expectation,

he leans in for a kiss... “Eeeeuw!,” you shout at your friend, startling her half to death, as you shake yourself from your daydream. “His breath would stink, wouldn’t it?,” you say to the uncomprehending face across from you. “They didn’t bathe all that often in the 19th century. And they definitely did not have toothpaste.” Uuurgh, you think. What a dirty time to be alive. Gladly, you find yourself in an age where not only running water, but also soap and toothpaste is freely available. True, men don’t stand when you walk in the room, but that’s uncomfortable

anyway. People don’t randomly recite poetry at you, but that’s OK too. It’s weird. Most importantly, you are allowed to work, vote, drive, decide who gets to marry you, and so much more. We still have a long way to go, but women have it a grand sight better than they did 200 years ago, don’t they? You live in the safest (believe it or not), most advanced and most comfortable era in human history thus far. As fun as romanticising the past can be, don’t forget what a fantastic time it is to be alive right now.

The mouth-watering quality and vibrant quantity of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, tapas and more to source from means The Best Night In Cookbook will have something for everyone — perhaps all your favourite dishes from around town. Wouldn’t it be interesting to know how they do it? How they make the meat so

tender, the sauce so rich, the cake so fluffy? Wouldn’t it be even better if your own attempt at your favourite dish turns out to be your new favourite? “If you try a recipe and it fails, at least you’ll know where to go for the real deal,” said Marianne Harth, events coordinator at Cancer Council Queensland. MAKE IT SPECIAL W

hether you are celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary, or your first year together as a couple, here are some romantic ideas for the occasion.

RECREATE YOUR FIRST DATE

If you can remember the details of the night that sealed the deal, try to recreate as many aspects of the date as possible. This will remind you and your partner where it all started and why you fell in love in the first place.

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Your anniversary is the perfect opportunity to tick one off your bucket list.

YOUR ANNIVERSARY ONLY COMES ONCE A YEAR

Perhaps you and your partner have been saying for ages how great it would be to take Route 66 from start to finish. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to have a couple’s massage. There is no time like the present! This will show your partner you are serious about putting your plans into action, and it will produce just another incredible memory for you to share.

SPEND THE NIGHT SOMEWHERE SPECIAL

Whether it’s the wedding suite wherein you spent your first night as a married couple, or the cabin wherein you spent your first holiday together, spend the night somewhere special.

Being somewhere alone for the night, without distractions, will give you plenty of time to give your partner all the attention they deserve on this special day (and vice versa!).

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

Is there something your partner mentioned in passing, something they’d like to do, somewhere they’d like to go, or something small they would like to buy? Surprising your partner with a trinket that caught their eye months ago, or a fishing trip they’ve always wanted to take but kept postponing, shows them you’ve paid attention. Whatever you do, make it special.

Tell us a little about yourself I am a contemporary Indigenous artist and a proud Kalkadoon woman from the Mount Isa area currently living in Bundaberg, Queensland. I am passionate about reconciliation and my people’s history and culture and want to share that with the rest of the world through my art. Describe your style My style combines my traditional Aboriginal heritage with a modern contemporary twist creating a colourful and unique representation of two worlds combined as one. When did you start painting? I entered my first art competition at 13 years old and won first place in the open category and have been painting madly

ever since. Through my art I have helped many charities to raise funds and have been recognised for this by winning many awards including Australia Day awards, local and national NAIDOC awards, Qld Pride of Australia award, young achiever awards and have been an Australia Day Ambassador for the past four years. What are some of the highlights of your artistic life? I have exhibited my artworks in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, London, Melbourne and Sydney. I have met with Royalty on several occasions and have two paintings hanging in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace, one painting permanently hanging on the Reconciliation level of Qld Parliament

House and two paintings hanging in Qld State Library. My artworks have been commissioned by Queensland Government, Tennis Australia, National Rugby League, Caritas Australia, Dreamworld, Australian Defence Force, Essendon AFL ... I recently created the Indigenous markings and story for Borobi the GC2018 Commonwealth Games Mascot, created a 14 metre art piece with the 20,000 volunteers and a nine metre painting in the Athletes Village with the athletes and dignitaries including His Royal Highness Charles Prince of Wales. What do you like about Toowoomba? I love the Carnival of Flowers. The bright kaleidoscope of colours reminds me of one of my paintings.

COUNTRY COUPLE’S RUSTIC WEDDING ON MERINGANDAN FARM

LOCAL AND LOVING IT! H

igh school sweethearts, Kylie Otto and Nathan Alexander, got married in November 2017, after 9 years together. Almost five years previously, Nathan proposed to Kylie at the Capricorn Caves. He went down on one knee, with his parents and Kylie’s mum as witness. “It was very unexpected, but I was so happy,” Kylie recalls, adding she always wanted a rustic country wedding. “The farm I grew up on was too far for guests to travel, so we approached local farmers Kieren and Andrea Luck, who agreed to host our wedding on their property,” Kylie explains. The couple were married on the farm Erinvale, beneath towering gums and beside the old rustic barn. “The property has loads of character,” she adds.

The couple exchanged their vows under a beautiful wooden arbour, built by the owner of the farm from the property’s fallen trees. Kylie took Nathan’s last name. She believes it’s important, as a family, to have the same name. “It also takes me from the bottom to the top of the alphabet!” she quips. The remains of the 110-year old homestead, barn and old yards made for memorable wedding photos. “Not many brides have wedding photos feeding cows, do they?” Their wedding was a mix of country rustic charm and modern elegance, with a clear marquee under a star-filled summer sky, festoon lights draped through the gum trees around the dance floor, centrepiece mason jars filled with blue gum foliage, and blush pink and

white flowers, and warm light from the tea-light candles. A serviced bar made from recycled wooden pallets, and a grazing table overflowing with fresh local goodness was a big hit among the guests, who were entertained by live music from Jacques van Lill on the veranda of the old barn. “Everyone just let their hair down. Not one person was sitting in the corner.” Having tied the knot, the couple are expecting their first child in December. Kylie’s advice is to enlist the help of a wedding planner, if you can. “It definitely helps take the stress off.” The couple are very appreciative of the help they received from their wedding planner, Daniella Martin, from First Look Wedding Planning.

ADVENTURES IN CAPRICORN CAVES A

bout 30 minutes out of Rockhampton is a natural gem — Capricorn Caves. Nestled in the outskirts of tiny village The Caves, this system is well worth a visit. There are a couple of different tours to choose from when you arrive at the well-equipped kiosk, and we pick the hourly Cathedral Cave Tour. I have done several cave tours in my time but never seen one that permits up to 50 people in a group — our group is the biggest I’ve ever been in for a cave tour, sitting at about 20 people. Our guide is well-informed and interesting to listen to, sharing history and other titbits as well as the usual cave-specific talks. Capricorn Caves, we learn, is partly

52 | August 2018

special because it is technically above-ground for part of it and is a dry cave situated in a dry rainforest. One of the caves in the system sits on the Tropic of Capricorn, and this entire cave lights up with hot, white sunlight each Summer Equinox as the sun lines up with the Tropic of Capricorn and shines through a small hole in the cave ceiling. We spend some time listening to music in the aptly-named Cathedral Cave, enjoying the amazing acoustics, before our guide turns out every light to show what the first discoverer of the caves experienced. You can’t even see the faint outline of your hand in front of your face, and the old-style candle our guide has doesn’t provide much light.

BY JESSICA KRAMER

We keep going through the system, glad for modern lighting and that the bat colony’s excrement is no longer knee-high like it was in the 1800s. Our tour finishes with the ‘Zig-Zag Passage’ — also appropriately named as the turns become so tight that we are advised to walk through sideways — and two large suspension bridge, which bring out my inner-child and that of a fellow guest in his 70s. We are encouraged to find our sense of adventure and have fun with this section of the tour, so no-one really minds. While bringing a light jacket or jumper with you is recommended, it doesn’t get too cold down in the caves. There are also another two tours to choose from for the more adventurous.

SIDES

SCENE

There’s only one thing better than pizza, and that’s all you can eat pizza! Toowoomba is still the only Darling Downs town to boast a dine-in Pizza Hut, which gives families the opportunity to sit down and have a great meal.

Salads With at least three pasta salads and various other salad ingredients on offer to build your own, you are spoiled for choice. Various fruits Juicy watermelon, pineapple pieces, peach and orange slices can be enjoyed on their own, or as a fruit salad on the side.

DESSERT

MAIN

The buffet table boasts no less than 10 pizzas at any given time, and the pasta comes with a choice of Alfredo or Bolognaise sauce. The BBQ Meatlovers Pizza Packed with tasty bacon, beef, Italian sausage, honeyed ham, and spicy pepperoni. Veggie Sensation Pizza A cheesy Mozzerella pizza topped with all kinds of delicious veggies and a drizzle of Aioli.

Chocolate Mousse & Brownies Who doesn’t like a brownie? They’re firm, but not crumbly, with a slight stickiness to them. Moist throughout and not too sweet, they are definitely praiseworthy. The chocolate mousse is melt-in-your-mouth creamy, decadent and fluffy, and adds a bit of extra sweetness to the brownies. Other dessert options include apple crumble, soft-serve ice-cream with a choice of caramel or chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, 100’s and 1000’s, mini marshmallows, and two jellies.

THE JEWELLER WITH THE ETHICAL TOUCH

NATURE’S FORGE W

hat began as something to keep Anita Ballis occupied through a difficult time grew into her passion. Anita started making jewellery and other whimsical items in 2009. A life-long love for butterflies and a lady’s butterfly wing pendant sparked the idea in Anita’s mind to make her own nature-inspired jewellery. She decided to replicate the lady’s pendant for herself after finding them sold out online. “After many attempts, I finally had a sealing process which allowed me to set wings under glass and I had learned how to hand-paint the wings in resin to allow their natural shapes to be seen and admired,” Anita says. Anita is inspired by the colours and designs found in nature and, having

grown up on fantasy epics such as The Lord of the Rings, said her mind loves to wander into the mythical and whimsical for ideas. Anita’s artwork holds particular significance for her. “I love the symbolism of transformation and new beginnings the butterflies and snake sheds have. “It reminds me of my own personal journey and how my work helped me bring a new beginning in my own life.” Each natural element used in Anita’s jewellery is ethically sourced in accordance with environmental laws. She obtains the reptile sheds from local pet owners once their pets have naturally shed their skins. “I have a lovely lady in Brisbane who regularly sends me sheds from her

python,” said Anita. For the insects and butterflies, Anita works with a number of overseas breeders and buys their insects once they are deceased. She also works with the Coffs Harbour Butterfly House and makes jewellery for them from their own deceased insects. Anita’s favourite piece is always the one she is currently working on and, because she works with a variety of mediums and themes, she likes to keep things fun and fresh. “I love a challenge and I set myself a more elaborate costume-style piece every now and again. “At the moment, I’m working on a latex armour outfit for the Carnival of Flowers, which is very exciting.”

ON THE BIG SCREEN

A GREAT READ SONAM AND THE SILENCE

BY EDDIE AYERS ILLUSTRATED BY RONAK TAHER

CRAZY RICH ASIANS Release date: Thursday, August 30 Stars: Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh, Henry Golding, Awkwafina Genre: Comedy Even at the first special screening in April, this movie has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback. The story, based on Kevin Kwan’s book of the same name, is a romantic comedy that follows New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family at his best friend’s wedding. Sounds like a nice trip, except it reveals that boyfriend Nick had conveniently forgotten to share some details with her. Namely, that he comes from a very wealthy family with a dark past, and is possibly the most eligible bachelor in Asia. As if this wasn’t enough, his mother isn’t too keen on Rachel and every single woman around wants to get their hands on Nick!

This picture book for ages six to 10 is a touching way to educate children about the history of Taliban-ruled Afganistan and the life of one girl forever changed by music. Young Sonam is sent to work when her childhood is deemed over at age seven, but her world is dark and silent while filled with chaotic traffic and war noise. That is, until she follows a magical sound that leads her to discover music — which was banned during the Taliban occupation. While written as a children’s book, the story is still deep and touching for the adult reader. Author Eddie Ayers said he wrote the book for the young musicians of Afganistan, but there is the potential for it to touch the lives of Australian as well and spur them to help our cousins across the world. Sonam and the Silence, published by Allen & Unwin, is available now in bookstores. RRP $24.99

FRESH SOUNDS FROM THE BACK COUNTRY

BY GRAEME CONNORS

When it comes to being able to blend country, blues and rock with a laid-back feel, there is no one better than Graeme Connors. His latest release is a prime example of his ability to do just that. This is a journey album — spanning the last seven years, it simply explores the challenges that we all go through; coming out the other side experienced and wiser. If you are looking for an emotional blend of beautiful songs sung from the heart, it is hard to go past this release. Graeme Connors is booked to appear at the Empire Theatre as well, so get in early for tickets.

GET YOUR NEW FINANCIAL YEAR GAME ON NOW BY CREATE FINANCIAL

H

ere is a list of five things to do to get new financial year ready. 1. Check in on your goals There’s no point doing anything until you know what you’re doing it for. Write down your goals for the next financial year (and beyond) to make sure your plans can help you get there. Your goals might be things like a holiday, renovation or paying down your debt. And, if you already have goals you’re working towards, now’s a great time to check if you’re still on track. 2. Get across the changes in super laws There have been a number of changes to superannuation laws recently, that will impact many Australians. Some of the key ones include: ■ Eligible first home buyers are now able to save for a home deposit using their super. ■ Personal super contributions can now be claimed as a tax deduction by

most people. ■ The spouse super contribution tax offset thresholds have increased, meaning more people are now eligible to a tax offset of up to $540 for contributions into a spouse’s super account. From 1 July 2018, any unused amount of before-tax contributions limits can be carried over to the following year. 3. Give your budget some love A budget needs to change as your life does. Take some time to check your budget against your bank statements and see whether they’re in sync. It’s also a good time to check if you can get a better deal on things you pay for regularly like your internet, phone and utilities. 4. Check your will reflects your wishes Make sure your will still reflects your life and wishes. It’s also worth seeing that your money’s properly protected

OWN YOUR TOMORROW

and invested according to your circumstances and goals. Separate to this are whether your super fund beneficiaries are up to date. If you die, the death benefit and/or balance in your super fund are usually paid to the people you’ve nominated (beneficiaries). If you don’t nominate anyone, or you haven’t updated them to match your current wishes, the money may not go where you want it to. 5. Review your insurance It’s important to have enough insurance in place, so all you’ve saved and worked for in life is protected. It could also mean you won’t be a financial burden to your family if something goes wrong.

No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. We have partnered with AMP, Australia’s largest financial planning network, to give you access to some of the most reliable and competitive financial products and solutions while maintaining the friendly personal attention you only get from a locally-owned and operated business. BREAKTHROUGH AFTER A BREAK-UP C

hange is scary, right? Deciding to separate from your partner can be an overwhelming process, whether it is a joint decision or something initiated by only one person in the relationship. There are many factors to be considered as you step into this new phase of your life, including arrangements for your children, dividing your finances and property, and sometimes even planning for your safety. A wise woman once told me that you can’t eat an elephant in one go, but if you take it bite by bite, it’s achievable. The key is to arm yourself with

knowledge obtained from quality advice so you are better informed about the best approach to take, and to surround yourself with people who provide you with positive support. My tips to help break the proverbial elephant down are: ■ It is important to obtain legal advice from a lawyer specialising in family law sooner rather than later. Knowing the process early on will help to protect you, your children and your financial position, and hopefully move you towards reaching an amicable resolution without the need to go down the Court pathway. ■ As you commence negotiations around the division of your property, ensure that you continue to engage with your accountant and financial advisor to remain well informed about the avenues available to you and any financial

impact with respect to the division of your property. ■ Most importantly, look after yourself. If you are having difficulty coping, then don’t hesitate to reach out for support, whether that be from friends or family or from a professional support network. Your family lawyer will also be in a position to point you in the right direction for services and organisations that are relevant to your circumstances. While change is rarely comfortable, in life it is necessary. Separation is likely to be a challenging stage of your life, but with quality professional advice and positive support networks, you will be better equipped to move forward into this new phase of your life and your new beginning.

RETIREMENT IS A JOURNEY

NOT A DESTINATION Needs and wants change as the years go by and we grow older, but needing to move into a retirement village does not mean it’s the end, retirement is just the next chapter in life and it can be extremely fulfilling.

For a long time, Retirement Villages have wrongly been associated with aged care or nursing home facilities, when in fact they offer and pro-actively encourage people to live independently. As we age, our family homes sometimes don’t suit our changing needs and that is where smart design, convenient locations and the no maintenance environment that retirement villages offer, become an appealing choice. Oak Tree recognise that today’s retirees are looking for a smaller house located within their home town. This is why each Oak Tree village is close to all community and medical facilities. Couple this with the security of gated communities and recreational facilities that residents can use at their leisure, retirement village living moves away from the notion of being aged care.

Oak Tree Retirement Village 118 Platz St, Darling Heights

oaktreegroup.com.au

From experience, the Oak Tree Retirement Group can attest that you don’t stop living when you move into a retirement village – life just gets easier. The Oak Tree Group has a strong regional focus when selecting the location of its villages, allowing seniors to retire peacefully in the towns they feel the most comfortable in. The ageing population in regional communities highlights the need for affordable and accessible housing options for retirees in rural areas. For many to attain an improved lifestyle, communal living represents the most cost-effective option. Downsizing to a village in many cases releases cash for residents to invest and live on, whilst enjoying a maintenance-free lifestyle. Another benefit of retirement living at Oak Tree is that each home has been thoughtfully designed with the future in mind. General maintenance and repairs are organised by a Village Manager who oversees all aspects of the Village operations.

For more information on Toowoomba’s newest Retirement Village, please contact 1300 367 155 to register your interest.
