Even though Toowoomba has cooled down, the community and social scene is heating up — in a big way. The Darling Downs is super busy over May, and we have so much to share with you in this edition. Get behind the Mother’s Day Classic and go pink for breast cancer (p15), and gather up your loved ones to enjoy another wonderful year of the Hampton Festival (p16). We’ve been super lucky to chat to local lady, Jen Shaw, who is mentoring Toowoomba’s next generation through her youth organisation, Emerge. Jen shares her inspiring story with us on pages 8 and 9. We meet local band Shark Drive (p17), and local stylist Felicity Wright gives us fashion tips for travel (p21). This month we are thrilled to be supporting the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway, a spectacular fashion event that is raising vital funds for St Andrew’s oncology department. Check out everything you have to look forward to across our delightful four-page spread starting on p24. Lauren Hope talks about the different ages of travelling (p30). Make sure you read the latest review for local restaurant Qi’Lin — you will want to book a table straight after you’ve finished (p53). Get prepared for the social calendar for May with our packed What’s On (p60). We hope you enjoy this edition of Style.

EMER BET BY CLARE STANDFAST
“If you drive into the CBD on a Thursday or Friday night you can catch a glimpse of how many young people like to hang out downtown with their friends — many of those kids are disengaged from school and their family and participating in dangerous and anti-social activities,” founder of Emerge Jen Shaw says. “Emerge is a social impact organisation that aims to engage, encourage and empower youth in the Toowoomba region within a food van, training and mentorship programs and a dedicated youth hub.” The youth hub sits cosily between Produce Ln and Station St, across the road from Grand Central, right in the Toowoomba CBD. Jen Shaw believes that it takes a village to raise a child. While her background is in hospitality, she has published three cookbooks with her business, Barefoot Kitchens, and has spent the past seven years writing online, hosting workshops, cooking demonstrations and mentoring families on eating healthier on a budget, all the while developing the concept of Emerge. Jen is also a loving mother to seven beautiful children. “I’ve had the vision to create a space for youth in Toowoomba for over 15 years. I grew up in Toowoomba and spent much of my youth on the streets, out of school and disengaged from my family. It was thanks to out-of-the-box ideas and mentorship from down-to-earth people that played a big part in helping me so I wanted to create a platform for that to occur for other kids in our community.” Jen has set up Emerge as a platform to re-engage kids into more positive

RGING TO A TTER FUTURE Meet Jen Shaw, the founder of Emerge Toowoomba activities with mentors who can guide them through challenges, particularly if they don’t have that support in other areas. “It’s our vision that many of these kids and others in our community can participate in work experience and further training in the Emerge program and food van and start to make better choices on their own terms. At Emerge we understand that everyone has a story and we can meet youth exactly where they are at in life to help them develop positive life skills, work experience and job confidence in a platform that is purpose-built for them to do so. There are many amazing organisations working with kids in our community but we fill a gap and answer a real need for something that focuses on job readiness where there are barriers,” Jen says. The Emerge Youth Hub was created to establish a safe, supervised and judgement-free zone for young people in the Toowoomba region. In the hub, youth can access focused events and activities, safe drop-in times, crisis food, clothing and hygiene items, and, as Jen says, “just (be) somewhere that feels a bit like home for youth who don’t have anywhere to call that.” While the idea for Emerge has been growing for 15 years, it came into impact two years ago with a group of like-minded people. From there, they have successfully raised $33,000 independently, have put a down payment on a mobile catering and food van, developed a strong board, become an incorporated association and have opened the doors to Toowoomba’s first dedicated youth space. Originally the concept for Emerge was

developed around a cafe model, but after much research, the team could see that this vision had a large risk of failure from a social impact perspective. Thankfully, they started again, and created what is known today as the Emerge Youth Hub. “We have been building a team for Emerge with a wide variety in skills and professional backgrounds, obviously given the hospitality element we have a lot of chefs and foodies involved including Sherry McDowell and Tash Zierbath, both of whom are amazing
chefs with a love of both serving up wholesome healthy foods and helping youth in the community. We have a strong advisory board of professionals in business, community services and corporate governance and an amazing team of mentors in health, fitness and emotional wellbeing. I believe it takes a strong village to bring a project like this to life and I am so grateful for everyone who has already come on board with us,” Jen adds. Ideally, Emerge would like to partner with businesses, organisations and individuals who share their ethos and passion for delivering a project like this in the Toowoomba region to ensure the survival of the hub, both in the short and long term. “We are engaging with more and more kids every week through our programs and the drop-in space and have some really big plans for the future both as a social impact business and a community organisation. I often pinch myself that this project has become a reality when it started in sketch books and whispers to friends and family many years ago,” Jen shares. “When I named Emerge, it came from a quote that I loved, ‘I struggle but I emerge’. At Emerge we want young people to know that no matter the struggle, they can emerge. You just have to keep moving forward and never give up.”

Fighting back with fitness BY JOSIE ADAMS
G
lenda walks into the gym, drops her bags and rolls out an exercise mat while cheerily chatting with a few personal trainers. Just over a year ago Glenda had a double mastectomy, and had lost nearly all movement in her upper body. “You don’t realise it but they don’t just take your boobies out. They take everything. Muscle, nerves. It was like my arms and shoulders just froze,” she says. ‘But now I can do this,” she says laughing as she lifts both of her arms over her head. “I can finally hang out the washing … and lift 20 kilos.” Glenda, with 11 other women in various stages of breast cancer treatment or recovery, is celebrating the last day of the Fighting Back with Fitness Program with a workout, of course, and a lot of laughing and chatting. The pilot program is an Australian first in a community setting. The women have been training together for 90 minutes, three times a week for 12 weeks, under the observation and guidance of exercise physiologists and personal trainers at Fit Lab’s High Performance and Rehabilitation Centre. Exercise physiologist Henry Elliot can be seen co-ordinating personal trainers, popping in and out of his office and helping the women into their warm-up stretches.

Support Fighting Back with Fitness Fighting back with Fitness is as a community-funded program between Blush Cancer Care, The Fit Lab and Queensland Xray. For more information on how to support this initiative contact Maree Parsons 0413 020 775.
Over his career, Henry says, he has worked with several people across all stages of cancer and treatment, including in the acute chemotherapy phase, and has seen the positive effects of physical activity. His passion for the program is evident. “Cancer sucks, but the treatments are worse,” he says.
“Chemo, radiotherapy, surgery, hormone treatments and the additional drugs to improve the effectiveness of these treatments are incredible. They save lives. But they are seriously unpleasant and remorseless in their collateral damage to quality of life.” The physical toll treatment takes on the body is immense. As in Glenda’s case, after surgery, cording or a hardening of the tissue under the arm can feel like a cable binding the ribcage to the upper arm. Also, both surgery and chemotherapy can damage the lymphatic system, causing painful volumes of fluid in the arms or abdomen. “Early-onset menopause, infertility,

hot flushes, frailty, sarcopenia, osteopenia, psoriasis, problems with balance, falls risk, the list is very, very long.” Henry also says fatigue is a near-ubiquitous side-effect and it often exacerbates the biggest challenge many women face: maintaining their mental health. “Even if we completely ignore the biomedical impact of treatment, it is the other side-effects that people never think about. The change in social identity – these are caregivers, mothers, doctors and students, suddenly turned into clinical patients and receivers of care,” he says.
www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
“The disease and its treatments completely change how people see you, how you see yourself, what is important to you and how much of your day is your own choice. “To have to think about things like the Registry of Deaths, cost of treatment, loss or change of career, concern that your own children might get cancer too. “Stress and fear are endemic in this experience. Then you consider the fatigue burden and the cognitive decline – mental health is a big factor here.” As I sit and watch the women joking and smiling, while moving their bodies in ways they couldn’t think possible 12 weeks ago, it occurs to me that this
program really is invaluable. There is no talk of cancer, just a group of women doing their cardio and lifting weights. “This certainly wasn’t some dream-team of ex-athletes rolling up for gym session,” Henry says. “Some of the women genuinely believed they couldn’t make it through one day at a gym. We had five ladies who were unable to stand from the floor and whose mental health scores were considered extreme for measures of stress and anxiety. ‘‘During the program there were surgeries, births, deaths, illness. There was some seriously tough sh-going around the gym some days, but it only brought everyone closer together. “Now everyone can drop and rise from the floor and their mental health and fatigue scores are significantly better.” Henry says that while the clinical results have been outstanding, the most rewarding outcome has been on a personal level. “When I hear things like ‘my friends told me I’m glowing’, or ‘I skipped down a set of stairs on the weekend without thinking about it – and then remembered only a few months ago I had hobbled down them’, that is what matters.” “The true value of this program is that it worked. This kind of thing should be standard care for most cancers – the evidence is so rich and profound.”

COLD WAR Winter sniffles are inevitable, but fighting the good fight may just get you through this flu season Statistically, 2017 was the biggest year for catching colds in Australia since 2009. So, how do you protect yourself from the flu? Unfortunately, you can’t lock yourself away in your room, so here are a few ways to arm yourself against the dreaded bug. The most common method of protection is taking the flu shot. However, this popular injection can’t keep you safe from all strains of influenza due to its rapid mutation rate, but it will protect you from the common
flu. If you’re afraid of needles, then Vitamin C might be for you. A group study showed that taking 200mg of Vitamin C per day reduces the risk and duration of flu symptoms by eight per cent (not much, but it might just be the edge you need). Even garlic is capable of fighting the flu. Garlic contains allicin and other compounds that are released when the garlic is chewed and these compounds have been shown to boost the flu-combating response of white blood
cells in the body, helping fight it off. However, the most efficient way of protecting yourself from flu is simply to wash your hands effectively as a good scrubbing will physically remove the viruses from your skin. The water doesn’t need to be hot or cold, just rubbing hard will do the trick and if soap and water is unavailable, using an alcohol-based sanitizer will suffice. Washing your hands regularly is shown to reduce the chance of catching flu by 45 per cent, making it the most effective way to fight those winter woes (as well as the easiest).

OVER 18,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, Cancer Australia estimates. This is a sobering 13 per cent of all new cancer cases to be diagnosed this year. While the chance of surviving breast cancer is very positive (90 per cent), it is something no person wants to go through — and we still don’t know what causes it. So, this Mother’s Day, why not celebrate your mother while joining with other Toowoomba residents in raising funds for breast cancer research? Shark Drive
Who are your band members and who plays what? We’ve got Robert on guitar and vocals, Michael on bass guitar, Joseph on keyboards and vocals, and Matthew on the drums. How would you describe your sound? We usually describe the music we make as a mix of pop-punk, alternative rock and new wave. If you can imagine a hybrid of Regurgitator, Blink 182 and Devo, that’s what we sound like. How long have you all been playing for? We’ve been playing as a band for about four years, but individually we’ve been playing music for around eight years. We had gotten that video game Rock Band for Christmas one year, and through playing that, we got inspired to learn and play real instruments. We started going to a place called Stars and Idols, who did group music lessons to get their students used to playing as a band. How did Shark Drive start? Jim Dowling of Stars and Idols eventually convinced us to play together for once, and entered us in the Toowoomba Rock Eisteddfod. We came up with our original name Stark Drive, the name of the street that we grew up on, and then started practising some covers for the competition. We did pretty well in the Eisteddfod, achieving a second place in the open band division (out of two bands). Afterward, we kept on learning songs, and started writing songs of our own. The first time we played one of our own was at a trivia night fundraiser for Careflight, in front of about 300 people. The origin of Shark Drive, as opposed our original name Stark Drive, was when we found that a Swedish electric bicycle company, also called Stark Drive, was taking the electric-bike world by storm. They quickly took over all of the internet search results, so we decided to change our name, because a) sharks are cool, and b) we couldn’t afford a trademark. What has been the highlight for Shark Drive so far? Easily the biggest highlight for us so far, is when we played a show last year alongside Aussie punk rock behemoths, Frenzal Rhomb. They are one of only a handful bands that we each unanimously agree are one of the best bands of all time. The fact that they personally picked us to open for them, that it was probably the biggest gig we’ve played, and that they were some of the most respectful musicians we’ve ever met, easily makes it the highlight of our band journey so far. What are the future plans for Shark Drive? 2018 is going to be quite a busy year for us, recording new music, shooting a couple of videos and playing heaps of shows. Hopefully, in the near future we can actually do what we always say we will and release a single. We’ll hopefully do a show or two for that, and then get into a studio and get an album together ... and then play a whole bunch of shows for that. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

MAKING A DIFFERENCE With a genuine affection for people and a strong caring instinct, Sharon McManus plays an important role as manager of the Oak Tree Darling Heights retirement community.
Born and raised in Toowoomba, Sharon’s family has lived in the Garden City since 1944. “They say home is where the heart is and that is certainly true for me,” Sharon said. “I feel comfortable living and working here and enjoy being close to my mother Merle, my daughter Natasha and her three young boys, and my son Jamie who is based in Brisbane.” Sharon was working as a motel manager when she was asked to manage the Oak Tree retirement village in Baker Street, Toowoomba. She was responsible for selling the 57 villas in the complex and felt excited about taking over the management of Oak Tree’s Darling Heights village, located next door. “My work with Oak Tree Retirement Villages is the most rewarding I have ever done and it is fabulous to see residents blossoming
while living independently in a community purpose-built to help people to age comfortably. “I enjoy assisting residents to transition into the relaxed and caring Oak Tree way of life, overseeing day-to-day operations and organising social events. It is lovely to see residents enjoying the new chapter in their lives, making friends, trying new activities and enjoying more free time.” Oak Tree Toowoomba is a relatively “young” village with the average age of residents around 70. “The people living at Oak Tree Toowoomba are part of a close-knit community. While residents respect each other’s privacy, there is a great sense of belonging along with the reassurance of maintenance-free living in a safe and secure environment. “People come to Oak Tree Toowoomba from all locations and walks of life. Some are from Sydney and Port Macquarie while others are farming folk who have moved in from the country. Residents enjoy a lot of support and enjoy the benefits of living in a village that is close to shopping centres, medical services and sporting facilities. Oak Tree is like a family and we all belong.”

STYLISH WINTER LAYERING Be brave this winter and step out in stylish winter fashion that doesn’t make you look frumpy! Yes, it is possible to dress for winter without looking like the Michelin Man! The secret: layers. As a beginners guide, I recommend starting with quality thermal underclothes. By investing in high quality leggings and tops, you’ll be able to wear a thin layer of thermal fabric which doesn’t add bulk to your overall look, plus you’ll ditch one of those puffy outer layers as a bonus. Follow this by finding as many vests, cardigans and layering pieces as you can that suit your body shape. By experimenting with different cuts and colours, you’ll discover the right option for your unique shape. To learn how to layer like a pro, take my workshop on May 27 — see Facebook for details. PACKING FOR A TRIP TO PARADISE BY FELICITY WRIGHT, FASHION COLUMNIST
I don’t know about you, but I love the cooler weather. In saying this, even the biggest winter fan starts googling “best tropical holidays” towards the end of the season. So if you have a holiday booked for a sunny paradise somewhere in the next few months make it even better by
packing smartly — this keeps things simple and allows for more room to shop. Here are five items to help take you from the beach to the cocktail bar without blowing all of your spending money on excess luggage. ● A blazer – throw it over shorts and
a tee, swap out your sandals for wedges and you are good to go from the beach to the bar. ● A bold lipstick – holidays are a time to relax and you want to keep things low maintenance, however every now and then you want to kick it up a gear. The easiest way to do this is with a bold statement lipstick … instant glam. ● A wedge heel – a great way to turn an outfit into more smart casual and a little less flip flop. This style heel is also a great option for a beach holiday as it will be easier to walk on grass and sand. ● Chunky accessories – Nothing transforms a simple outfit like bold accessories. Stacked up bracelets, large colourful earrings or a statement necklace. ● Colourful prints – Not really a fan of the above suggestions? Then let your clothes do all the work for you. Colourful prints, no matter how simple the cut of clothing will always add serious style factor. Send me a postcard. See more of personal stylist Felicity Wright’s work at www.wright-style.com.au.

STEPPING OUT
IN STYLE
Who doesn’t love fashion, glamour and supporting local? On May 26 at Rumours International, the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway will be headlining 20 exceptional fashion houses available across the Darling Downs while supporting St Andrew’s Hospital oncology department. With an emerging designer competition to be judged by renowned industry professionals including Alexander Kennedy, Bronwyn Smith, Leina Broughton and Mary Wagner, the Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway is set to be the fashion event of the year. Event organiser Kaye Foley is looking forward to the night, and is eager to see what it brings to the region. “I am so excited about the new emerging designer competition, and to watch all the new boutiques from the inner city such as S&G Collections, A’lia Collective, and Fox & Willow,” Kaye says. “The buzz I get is from the models who have been through my course experiencing a big runway show — that’s very rewarding for me. Giving back to the community is wonderful, I love supporting local businesses and I love supporting Toowoomba.” Based on the Gold Coast with a national following, Leina Broughton specialises in garments that flatter all shapes and sizes. Made from beautiful jersey, stretch lace and other easy fabrics these garments are meant to take you 24 | May 2018
from the boardroom to a party. Leina and her business partner Fleur Richardson are delighted to be joining the judging panel. Alexander Kennedy is a Toowoomba-based couturier who makes special occasion wear to order. In bridal, evening and race wear his style is classic with a creative twist and always featuring superb fabrics. Bronwyn Smith is the daughter of Irma J Smith and one of Brisbane’s most admired fashion doyennes. She makes complete wardrobes for her sophisticated clientele but it’s her evening
wear and signature suits that gain the most attention. Custom-made from exquisite fabrics these stylish suits will never date. Mary Wagner is certainly known for her community work and her role in bringing a wonderful airport to the people of Toowoomba. But many will remember her award-winning entries in Toowoomba fashion awards over the years. A talented designer and seamstress, Mary specialised in evening and bridal gowns. The event will also have a wonderful raffle on the evening, with big prizes on www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

This event can be enjoyed in style, with VIPs having drinks, a grazing platter, VIP bags and a guaranteed seat in the first or second row for $100. General admission is $50, and student tickets are available for $30 as well. “Our focus of the night is to raise lots of money for St Andrews, give back to our community, have lots of fun and see a great show,” Kaye says. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
“There will be lots of new boutiques to see, and it’ll be great to meet the new designers.” Supporting local is a big part of Stepping Out Winter Glamour Runway. “I’ve been here a long time, and Toowoomba really has grown a lot, from the funky boutiques, to the gorgeous cafes lining the streets — it’s lovely to see and it’s great that we can support these people,” Kaye adds. “The committee members have been very helpful — things like this don’t come together easily, so I am very grateful for all of their assistance.”

THE COOLEST WARDROBE The cold months have hit — while autumn is nearly over, winter is just around the corner The Style team is here to give you the top tips on what to stock your wardrobe with over the cooler months so that you are still hot-to-trot.
THE BOYFRIEND JEAN
AMAZING. Can’t love this little delight enough! The beautiful boyfriend jean teams so well with many pieces, it’s comfortable, works with many different body shapes... gorgeous. Team it with a pair of ankle boots and a leather bomber jacket. Note: Because these guys are baggy, everything else needs to be fitted.
THE CAPE
Oh, lover. This beautiful piece is like walking around with a big cuddle — wrap a gorgeous, thick cape around your shoulders and make it the statement of your outfit. Not only are they stunning, they’re
super practical as well. Make your cape an investment piece, and spend some money on a good quality one. Team it with some skinny tailored pants and a fitted knit sweater.
THE OVER-THE-KNEE BOOT
This sexy number is a statement piece that works well for day or night. These look gorgeous over leggings or skinny jeans for day, or teamed with an above-the-knee skirt for night.
BEANIES AND HATS
So cute! Wether they’re flat, wide felt hats, floppy hats, trilbies, fedoras, or gorgeous, luxurious beanies, they are all a wonderful topper to your outfit. Beanies are super snuggly to have around when the wind starts whipping mercilessly, so start gathering your collection. Team up similar gloves and scarves.

MAKING PACKING FASHIONABLE You’ve booked the hotel, got the plane tickets, even looked at where you’re going to eat for the first night. Now comes the tricky part packing appropriately, lightly, and without looking too much like a dag. Sounds almost impossible, right? Here Style Magazine shares some fantastic tips on packing right for your next holiday.
HOW
The Number One tip — wear your heaviest items of clothing and shoes when on the plane! In addition to this, try to limit the shoes you bring to three — walking shoes, evening shoes, and smart casual shoes. Also play with your packing technique, as often a combination of
Elly-Rae
rolling, folding and packing cubes/bags will be the most effective in saving space.
WHAT
Layering is a fashion trend that shows no sign of petering out soon, so why not make the most of it? Select three or four different tops and three different bottoms, then add a few cover-up pieces to layer with. Between mixing and matching and layering, you’ll have a wider variety of outfits with less washing, less packing, and more flexibility with changes in weather and temperature. Plus you’ll look stunning! PACKING RIGHT AND LOOKING

TO TRAVEL OR NOT TO TRAVEL? BY LAUREN HOPE, OPINION COLUMNIST
Beautifully crafted Jewellery & Watches for every occasion!
www.prouds.com.au
30 | May 2018
When is the best time to travel throughout your life? The debate is very real, and it is often a topic that seems to arise at the dinner table. Do you go when you finish school, in your early 20s or wait for the children to fly the coop and travel later in life? Or perhaps you truly believe that travel is the “window to the soul” and you are consistently yearning to experience new cultures. Whatever direction you choose, there are both pro’s and con’s. Take travelling in your late teens/early 20s as an example. It is likely that you won’t have the responsibility of a mortgage, job or children, so you are set to enjoy a carefree travel experience that’s a whole lot of fun. However, you probably have limited money unless you can work while you are travelling. Also, keep in mind that at a young age you might be less “cultured” (for lack of a better word) and choose non-stop partying rather than experiencing some of the country’s traditions. Travel in your 30s/40s — probably the trickiest time to travel (in my case anyway). You are most likely juggling children, mortgage, careers, businesses and the list goes on. However, it is achievable. A lot of my friends travel with their children and while it takes some extra planning it is a very rewarding experience for the whole family (I’m sure there are times that it’s a nightmare). Plus, you’re fit and able and starting to truly understand what you want to achieve by travelling. Travelling in your retirement — pop the champagne. No more children to worry about, financially secure, reduced job responsibilities. It sounds too good to be true. The kids might not like you spending their inheritance but if you are in good health it sounds like a fabulous time to travel. In my honest opinion though if travel suits your lifestyle, do it now. Create memories with your friends and families, experience new cultures and move outside your comfort zone. Remember, always take the scenic route.

HAVE A HEALTHY HOLIDAY
style l promotion
You’ve been saving every spare cent you have for months, your bags are all packed and you are finally ready to go on your holiday of a lifetime. You have planned your itinerary down to the last hour, including all the best tourist attractions. Travelling and seeing the world is an unforgettable experience and one that you'll want to enjoy to the fullest. Unfortunately sometimes unexpected illness can interrupt even the most carefully planned holidays and let’s face it, nobody puts the local pharmacy or hospital on their list of ‘must-see’ attractions. landing, but they also contain ingredients that help support the immune system and guard against cold viruses and bacteria. Probiotic – A good daily probiotic is vital to help maintain good gut health and particularly useful in the event that you do succumb to a stomach bug. There are many non-refrigerated brands on the market so they are easy to travel with. There is even a brand specifically designed to prevent and treat traveller’s diarrhoea. Electrolyte Replacement – this is a must when travelling. From preventing de-hydration during hot weather or stomach bugs to treating hangovers, you’ll be glad you packed it. Electrolyte replacements are available in several forms and flavours. We recommend the effervescent tablets which come in easy to pack tubes. THE WORLD IS YOUR CLASSROOM BY LISA MACHIN, OPINION COLUMNIST
If there’s one thing I will be imparting to my children above all else it will be the lesson of travel. There is no better teacher for lessons of diversity, how to stay humble, how to be grateful and most of all… how to learn yourself. Aged 19, my first international trip, which we were delightfully unprepared for, was a seven-week backpacking jaunt through South-East Asia with my big sister. May I emphasise that we had no idea what we were doing. Next minute we’d touched down in Bangkok and bundled into a million-mile-an-hour taxi ride. We noted (with adrenalin) that red lights were more suggestive than authoritative, and a beep to let people
know you’d be running straight through them was completely fine. We walked and caught the local bus everywhere, kept money in our bras so we wouldn’t be pick-pocketed, ate in roadside cafes and talked to everyone. We met people from all over the world in our hostels and at waterfalls. I made my first Russian friend, learnt that Israelis have compulsory military service and that monkeys will walk right up and steal your bag. We saw extreme poverty and social problems that brought tears to our eyes. And alongside we saw family love and gentle joy. We watched boys catching snakes from the river and piling them into
canoes. We dined with a Lao family on chilli fish so hot my eyes streamed, while their toddlers were unfazed. We partied in a club called The Heart of Darkness and saw the joy the locals got when we used their language. I learnt some of my faults and some of my strengths. Above all I learnt how incredibly lucky we are to be Australian, and how the whole world is your classroom and your playground if you have the courage to step out.

THE ROLE OF PROBIOTICS AND WEIGHT LOSS BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, HEALTH AND WELLBEING COLUMNIST
Weight loss can be frustrating at times, especially if we have found ourselves regaining the weight multiple times and feeling as though it is an uphill battle. Many individuals focus on reducing calories and increasing exercise, leading to poor results as there are underlying health issues. A compromised gut can play a role in why individuals do not experience healthy, sustainable weight loss. Excess weight is an inflammatory response in the body and once the gut
issues are addressed and inflammatory foods and environmental influences are eliminated, success happens. Probiotics play an important role in optimal gut health, building a healthy microbiome and reducing inflammation that leads to healthy weight management. Research has found that investing in a good quality probiotic containing multiple species of probiotics and high colony forming units (CFU) increases weight reduction. Have a look at the strains of bacteria
in your probiotics or fermented foods and make sure they are in line with your health goals. Probiotics that support healthy weight loss: ●Bifidobacterium animalis ●Bifidobacterium breve ●Lactobacillus gasseri ●Lactobacillus rhamnosus ●Lactobacillus paracasei ●Lactobacillus plantarum ●Lactobacillus rhamnosus ●Lactobacillus salivarius

When picking cleansers, those with oily skin should opt for products with exfoliants and salicylic or lactic acid as key ingredients. It’s also important that those prone to oily skin allow the cleanser to sit on their skin for a few minutes – perhaps while brushing your teeth – before rinsing off as to unclog pores and provide a deeper cleansing process, ridding all excess oils from the inside out.
SENSITVE SKIN
Those with sensitive skin will be familiar with easily irritable skin, resulting commonly in redness or flushing and are prone inflammation. Opt for natural products that don’t strip the skin’s natural oils or alter its natural balance to ensure the skin’s barrier remains intact, avoiding irritation.
NORMAL SKIN
For those with normal skin, opt for simple cleansers that aren’t too exfoliant based or overly moisturising.
COMBINATION SKIN
Those who have combination skin – whereby your T-zone becomes oily yet cheek area remains dry – opt for natural products to help balance skin composition.
DRY SKIN
For those with dry skin, opt for richer cleansers to promote the skin to hold optimal moisture. You should also opt for oils that don’t strip away the natural moisture barrier. —courtesy of Vogue Australia www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

INFLUENCERS A NEW FORM OF MARKETING BY NIVARD NELSON, OPINION COLUMNIST
But what exactly is “influencer marketing”, I hear you ask? Well, it’s the grey territory between an official review and a subtle product mention, which is done almost in passing. Can these influencers have an impact in helping to convince someone to travel
and visit a particular destination, resort, restaurant or attraction? Are the words and pictures that they share a true reflection of the experience that was had, or is it a false truth showcased so we the “followers” only see the positives and not the negatives? The new wave of reviews being
undertaken these days seem to be across social media platforms rather than the traditional means of print journalism, and this is where a huge grey area exists. Bloggers or v-loggers who call themselves influencers have helped create a situation where we need to take their reviews with some scepticism. Was that holiday they were on sponsored by the hotel and restaurant, or did they pay for it out of their own pocket? Who paid for the holiday will, I believe, influence how the experience is portrayed. The influencers doing the review has an obligation to present the restaurant, hotel or attraction in the best possible light if said restaurant, hotel or attraction has sponsored that person to be there. Yes, these influencers can have an amazing impact on the promotion for travel, but we need to be wary of their reviews and recommendations. In 2018 these sorts of collaborations between big brands and influencers are only set to increase. So much so that if influencer marketing is the beginning, then what’s next is the shift from social media to social marketplaces.

WRAPPING IT UP
BY BEAUTY SPECIALIST TENNIELLE COPSON
Buns are an easy and great way to empower you as you prepare to take on the day. But are you wanting to explore the versatility that the classic bun has to offer? Check out these bun hairstyle tutorials to upgrade you look.
FISHTAIL BUN
Step 1. Begin by brushing your hair to ensure there are no knots and placing it into a high ponytail. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections. Take a small ribbon section of hair from the outside of your right-hand section and cross it over the top to join it with your left-hand section. Step 2. Repeat the same process on the other side by taking a small ribbon section from the outside edge of your left-hand section, cross it 36 | May 2018
over the top and join it with the right-hand section. You should have made an X with these two ribbons of hair. Step 3. Repeat this all the way down to the end and secure with a hair tie. Step 4. To give the braid more volume, gently pull at the sides of the braid to loosen it. Start from the bottom and work your way upwards. Step 5. To finish, wrap the braid onto itself to create a knot and secure with bobby pins.

WRAPAROUND PLAIT BUN
Step 1. Brush your hair and pull it back and secure it in a high ponytail. Step 2. Separate a section of hair from the top of the ponytail. Plait this section of hair and secure with a hair tie. Step 3. Take the section of hair that is unplaited and twist it in the same direction, creating a rope-like piece. Wrap it onto itself to create a spiral. Wrap a hair tie around the topknot you have created, making sure that the tie lays flat at the base of the bun. Step 4. Wrap the plait around the top knot. When you get to the end, tuck it beneath the base of the bun. Secure with bobby pins, making sure that your hair will not fall out.

TRAVELLING WITH A CHILD WITH ADHD OR AUTISM Holidays are fun but travelling with a child with attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism can be a challenge, especially if the holiday involves a long car trip or air travel. ADHD is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour. Children with ADHD function best in a structured familiar setting; however, travel disrupts their routine and exposes the child to situations that can trigger impulsive behaviour — eating in restaurants, encountering strangers, sleeping in new environments and at different times. Children with ADHD or autism can be helped by strategies that prepare them
for travel. These can mitigate the impact travel can have on their behaviour making the trip easier for the family as well as for their fellow travellers. Involve the child in planning the trip - tell the child where they are going and why. Children with ADHD can be overwhelmed by sudden changes or shifts in their routine. Help the child prepare for the trip by letting them know where they are going and why they are travelling and who they might be going to visit. Ask them what they would like to see on the trip and what they would like to do and prepare a schedule that includes their activities. Rehearse calming techniques with the child. Practice calming techniques (deep breathing exercises or relaxing yoga moves) in the weeks leading up to the trip to help a child with autism develop skills to relax and deal with
their new experiences. If and when the child starts to become anxious, encourage them to do the calming exercises. This might help them settle. Having a familiar object such as a blanket or toy can also help them. Provide structure - set rules and guidelines for travel and provide positive discipline. Children with ADHD or autism like routine, so try to keep as much of their routine intact as possible. If not, set and adhere to a special “holiday” routine. Setting rules and guidelines for travel and communicating and reminding the child of these rules during the trip can also help. Interactive toys and games can keep the child occupied. Avoid exhaustion — arrange for some downtime. ADHD symptoms can intensify if a child hasn’t had enough sleep — ensure your schedule allows for them to keep to their regular sleep pattern. If this is not possible, ensure your schedule allows enough time for them to have appropriate sleep and rest. A schedule that provides opportunities for the child to be physically active to work off some energy can also help. Pack the child’s medication. If the child takes medication for their condition, make sure you pack their medication and ensure you have enough medication to last the trip, especially if you are travelling overseas. Carry the medication in your purse or in a carry-on, not in checked luggage. You should also carry a copy of the script and a letter from your GP stating diagnosis and medication if travelling overseas as these medications are banned in some countries. Always have medication in original packaging. Check the travel guidelines for the country you are visiting and see if there are extra requirements. Here is a handy link: http://smartraveller.gov.au/guide/ all-travellers/health/ Pages/medicine.aspx

EASY STEPS TO MEDITATION Today’s world can be very fast and busy, however, many people don’t take the opportunity to slow down and let their mind catch up — essentially, let themselves have a little rest. According to Headspace, “meditation isn’t about becoming a different person, a new person or even a better person. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings. You’re learning to observe without judgment.” Meditation can be difficult, particularly if you haven’t done it before — when you’re just starting out it’s
great to try guided meditations, which are easily accessible on a lot of apps including Headspace. Remember that the mind can be an odd and confusing place sometimes, so you’re doing a great job just having a go.
MEDITATING IN FIVE EASY STEPS 1. Find your space Try and find a spot that is private and you feel totally comfortable. Remove any clutter. A bedroom is a good suggestion. 2. Sit comfortably There are a lot of different ways to sit
when you meditate, but two of the most common ways include sitting cross-legged on the floor and sitting on a chair. It is not recommended that you lie down, as this will induce sleep, and the point of meditating is to occupy a state of awareness. 3. Clear your mind Loosen your body, stretch, and take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes. 4. Sit and observe Notice the thoughts that come into your mind. Don’t engage with them, just observe them. You’ll find that when you’re meditating, things will probably come into your mind such as, “I need to go to the shops tomorrow”, or “I need to reply to that email” — tasks to keep you occupied. However, you are a passive observer in meditation and it is your job to not engage with your thoughts, and to simply observe them. If you become distracted by these thoughts, imagine popping them like a balloon. 5. Finish your meditation Slowly open your eyes again and become aware with your physical surroundings again. If you’d like to, sit quietly in your meditative space and get up when you feel ready to resume physical activities again.

KICKING BUTT There’s never a ‘perfect’ time to give up smoking – so, why not make it today? Smoking is regarded by many as one of the worst addictions of the 20th Century. It’s easy to say “I’ll quit one day”, but many will never take that next step because the thought of withdrawals will always outweigh the health benefits (namely a significant reduction in the risk of cancer and other serious
diseases). Even immediately after stopping smoking, your body will start returning to its normal state - with blood pressure and carbon monoxide levels dropping quickly. One of the many methods you can use to quit smoking is vaping. Vaping uses an “e-cigarette”, and is
considered safer because of the absence of the fumes and chemicals found in tobacco cigarettes. It is also beneficial because others around you don’t breathe in the toxic fumes. Nicotine patches and gum also offer better alternatives to smoking as these methods involve delivering nicotine in a safer way, and the amount administered is gradually reduced over time. Some people prefer to use gum because it means they have something in their mouths other than a cigarette. Hypnosis has also been proven as a successful way of quitting. The patient is put into an altered state of awareness, and is made to replace thoughts about cigarettes with empowering quitting techniques. And, of course, there’s always quitting cold turkey. Cold turkey means stopping smoking altogether with no nicotine replacement treatment, but unfortunately, this is the least successful way of quitting because it relies solely on the willpower of the smoker. For more detailed information call Quitline on 137 848.

CASE CLOSED TAKE THE MYSTERY OUT OF FINDING THE RIGHT LUGGAGE FOR YOUR NEXT TRIP.
Whether exploring the world or your own backyard, taking a suitable bag on holidays is just as important as remembering your passport or the sunscreen. But with such an extensive variety of suitcases and backpacks out there – what is the right one to choose? Ask yourself the following questions and you’ll soon nail the perfect accessories to make your next trip hassle-free.
WHAT SIZE BAG DO I NEED?
Are you going away for a weekend or overseas for a month? Are you a light packer or do you have to sit on your case to close it (even before you step out the door)? As airport check-in or bag-drop lines become longer and longer, savvy short-term travellers are opting for a smaller case or duffel they can use as carry-on. They’re light, still have enough room for a couple of outfits and toiletries and they allow you to skip the crowds and make a bee-line for the taxis immediately after touching down. And, best of all, you know your carry-on won’t
go missing because it sits right above your head all trip. If you’re going for an extended vacation then you need a bag that is roomy and durable and that also prompts the following question.
SOFT-SHELL OR HARD-SHELL?
Traditionally, soft shell suitcases are lighter in weight and can be better manoeuvred into tighter nooks and crannies (think cruise ship cabins or European hotels). They often come with a variety of pockets or expanding panels that can helpfully hold extra souvenirs or even unmentionables that have no right mixing with clean clothes. A downside is that the bag can tear if mistreated and, generally, most aren’t waterproof. This is where hard-shell cases offer more protection (both for items inside and from the weather) and provide greater security as they can’t be ripped open as easily. The trade-off is they are prone to noticeable scratching and there is no “give” in their design – so, if it doesn’t fit that space, it isn’t going to fit that space.
WHAT’S THE BEST COLOUR?
If you’ve ever stood at the airport carousel and watched 50 lookalike black cases roll past then you’ll probably be keen to find a different baggage hue. We are constantly warned off white or cream bags (because of the obvious potential for marking), but with the gruelling treatment bags are subjected to there’s no way you’re going to be keeping it pristine for long. The internet was abuzz recently with a man who created a suitcase adorned with a giant photo of himself. If you’re not keen to go to that extreme to stand out, a distinctive novelty tag or a bright ribbon tied around the handle will soon identify when your bag rolls around.

HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND?
As with anything we buy these days, the wise old adage still rings true: you get what you pay for. You can save some money short-term by skimping on quality, but you’ll soon regret your penny-pinching when a wheel snaps off on day four of your trip. Conversely, pay too much for top-of-the-line products (which get treated exactly the same by baggage handlers) and you might find they too struggle under the rigours. Mid-priced travel luggage gives you the right mix of quality at an affordable price and, if you’re a frequent traveller, you’re probably already conditioned to the fact that bags have a finite lifetime. If you
can afford it, buy your next pieces of luggage on sale and store them away until needed – it’s a much better proposition than paying top dollar at an airport or boutique store because your bag has unexpectedly given up the ghost. No matter what type of luggage you’re
looking for, the overriding features you need to consider are durability, security (ideally with a built-in Customs-approved locking system) and value for money. The sooner you get that right, the sooner you can start enjoying your dream holiday.

TOP TRAVEL TIPS THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER WHEN YOU TRAVEL Whether you’re travelling for an extended period or a quick getaway, having the right information is always helpful in having the best experience. Here are some handy travel tips to help you have the best trip.
GET TO KNOW THE LOCALS
Meeting people from the area will enrich your travels by teaching you what they know, from first-hand experience. Basic English is spoken in many countries, and with the help of hand gestures and general body language, you will be communicating, no matter where you go. Make the effort to chat with the local people rather than tourists — they will teach you the true lay of the land, that travellers wouldn’t have the faintest idea about.
TUCK FUNDS AWAY
It’s super important to stash some extra cash for those emergencies when cards stop working, ATMs run out of money or you lose your wallet. It’s always great to have at least a few hundred dollars
hidden away. Depending on where you’re headed, pickpocketing can be something that you need to be very aware of, so get creative with your cash-stashing areas. You can buy security belts with hidden wallets, under shoe inserts, money socks, leg wallets and more.
TASTE LOCAL CUISINE
If you think you’ve really experienced a particular international cuisine, you’re probably wrong. Eat what the local people eat, and you will taste a true representation of their culture. Try street food that the locals suggest or from stalls with big lines out the front, and explore different meals.
SAY YES
Impulsivity is the spice of life. If someone invites you to try something new, meet their family or go on an adventure, say yes — it opens up your world to new opportunities and, more than anything, great stories later. Travel is a learning experience, so say
autumn tumn
yes to getting out and doing things, and enjoy the friendship of locals and other travellers along the way.
SAY SAYONARA TO YOUR COMFORT ZONE
If there’s something that gives you anxiety, challenge it — travel is a great opportunity to help those fears fade away, as you’re already having new experiences all the time. So if you usually stick to the same kind of food, try something different while you can, or if you’ve never been white-water rafting, give it a crack.
KEEP NOTES OR A JOURNAL
In years to come, you’re going to want to look back and remember the details of your trips — the conversations you had, the people you met, the food you ate, and more. Make sure you take the time to write it down. In this day and age, it’s great to keep a digital journal (that’s backed up on an external drive), so that you can take it anywhere, without the risk of losing it, or having it stolen.

style | motoring AT A GLANCE HOW BIG? It’s a dual cab ute able to handle five adults with a very big boot. HOW FAST? Uber cool, it’s a hairy-chested V6 engine and a cousin of the powertrain we’ve seen in Audis and the Porsche Cayenne. HOW MUCH? About $70,000 on the road, which is good value when considering kit ability. HOW THIRSTY? Surprisingly thrifty … if you can stop stomping the right pedal.
DARK NEW DRIVE BY GRANT EDWARDS
Banish any thought of basic paddock basher. This ute is a benchmark-setter in power and poise departments. The VW Amarok is motivated by a silky-smooth turbo V6 diesel, and this dual-cab has played a pivotal role in redefining the market. Even better than your basic V6 Amarok is this special-edition Dark Label — limited to 500 units. Getting special equipment including Vienna leather trim, heated front seats, matte black sports bar and side steps, black wheel-arch flares along with
18-inch anthracite alloy wheels, the Dark Label also gets black interior trim, headlining and pillars. You also get a touchscreen entertainment system with satnav, auto parking and full smartphone connectivity. Mighty posh for a ute. Bottle holders in each door are useful, as are the dual cup holders in the centre console. When it comes to the driving experience, it’s just brilliant. Exercise your ankle and it hauls like a sports car. Planting your foot is rewarded with immediate response, with no hint of
turbo lag the light steering makes the ute feel nimble. Knifing through town with ease, all that gusto makes for an easy car to drive, even with a load on the back. Most importantly, my better half loved it and returned from a journey with glowing endorsement. There are steering wheel-mounted paddles if you want to take manual-style control, although the eight-speed box does a mighty job of selecting the right cog in varying conditions.

Half the energy efficiency battle is won by selecting the right block
A
s the true cost of heating and cooling your family home becomes more of a 21st Century issue, the battle for establishing a truly energy efficient home is heating up. Today, customers who are getting new homes built are not only more savvy, but expect their builder to be on the same page, and provide genuine advice and guidance. Because they are forking out a significant sum for their new home, which will have a likewise significant effect on their lifestyle for a large chunk of their lives, they want workable results when it comes to reducing the real costs of running a practical and liveable home. Fortunately, better products, improved technology and greater awareness have made this easier and much more achievable than it has ever been, but there are traps for the unwary, just the same as some food products labelled ‘diet’ or ‘low fat’ can have the appearance of benefits, but not the substance. That’s why The Avenues in Highfields has achieved a major advance for those who really want to build an energy efficient home. Essentially, the gridded street layout, like much of old Toowoomba, is orientated north-south and east-west. This orientation is the singular important aspect of establishing the most cost-effective energy efficiency — in fact, about 50% of your new home’s efficiency is determined by the right site orientation. Every
other cost-saving aspect is underpinned by it. Another hidden benefit is that each block drains to the street, meaning there is no complex stormwater drainage system taking up valuable metres at the rear of each block. The best news is that around 80% of blocks in The Avenues have the ideal orientation, making the rest of it — building an energy FINALISTS efficient home — the easy and fun bit. And DISPLAY HOME when it doesn’t cost any more to have a ENERGY EFFICIENCY well-orientated site — that is, there is no added premium for it — it makes it so Look for this column much better. in next month’s Style... LOCAL LOVE SHINES MICHAEL AND RACHAEL BALL SHARE THEIR SPECIAL DAY
After a few days of rain, the skies cleared at the Toowoomba Downs Club for newlyweds Michael and Rachael Ball. “Michael is kind, caring and understanding. He has a heart of gold and would do anything for his family. He is content doing anything that the family and loved ones are doing,” Rachael grins. “Rachael is a smart, resourceful and purposeful woman. She prioritises her needs second when it comes to her friends and family. She enjoys music, dancing and is a bit of a country girl at heart,” Michael says. The couple met when they were both working at WFI Insurance, where Michael is currently the area manager. Michael proposed to Rachael at their much-loved Mt Tambourine — also the location of their first date. He took her on a sky walk rainforest walk in the drizzling rain. Once they were in the middle of the rainforest at a lookout, Michael got down on one knee and asked Rachael to
marry him. After the proposal they walked back to the car, and Michael had roses from Rachael’s mother’s garden, a gift from her new in-law’s and a bottle of champagne. He then took her to lunch at a restaurant on the side of the mountain. Their wedding was a mixture of country and vintage, with a lavender, beige and ivory colour scheme throughout. The centrepieces were pieces of wood with a glass jar on top which held lavender, a table number and sand. The bonbonnieres were hessian bags with chocolates and sugar almonds inside them. The couple personalised them by attached little wooden love hearts that had their names and the wedding date engraved on them. Michael and Rachael had their first dance to Heaven by Kane Brown. Michael suggests giving yourself enough time to plan a wedding. “Think about what you want to do and do it, stop trying to please everyone
else,” Rachael adds. The couple went to Hawaii for the honeymoon, and stayed in Waikiki. As for future plans, Michael and Rachael have plenty of them. “We will be trying for a baby not long after the wedding and buying a house together, as the houses we currently own are too small for our growing family,” Rachael says. Overall, the couple were thrilled with their special day. “It was the best day ever,” Rachael smiles.

style | travel CHEAP FEASTING IS ONLY ONE OF MEXICO’S MAZATLAN’S CHARMS
VAMOS DE FIESTA BY DARREN BURTON
With a broad smile the waiter placed the bill on the table and politely stepped back to the restaurant’s doorway. I knew why he was grinning – because I was about to hand over a king’s ransom for our lunch. I returned a friendly nod and a mangled “gracias” in my worst Spanish (which is also my best Spanish) and reached nervously for the folded piece of paper that chronicled the massive Mexican feast we had just devoured. As well as a mountain of pulled pork enchiladas, tacos and way too many bowls of salsa and smoky chipotle dip, my wife and I had also imbibed a considerable quantity of beer and margaritas – so, I was not welcoming the final costings. Thirty-eight dollars – there must be
some mistake. It should be four times that. I ran my finger down the itemised list and every one of our indulgences was there – not only had the food cost us a mere pittance, the Coronas were only $2 each. Hellooooooo Mazatlan. Our culinary windfall was an unexpected bonus on a magical sunny day that saw us explore this beautiful seaside town (and discover our new favourite eatery inside the Plaza Machado). This is in the heart of downtown and, as we sat outside people-watching, we revelled in the pastel colours of the classically restored architecture – and its striking French and Spanish influences – that made up the lively square. It pulsed with the energy of
inquisitive tourists, as well as the dynamic mix of local musicians wooing the assembled crowds. Just a short stroll up the road will bring you to the magnificent Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and you’ll also be able to take in the delightful aromas of the José Maria Pino Suárez Municipal Market (not that we could have eaten another bite). If you are planning to visit Mazatlan, and you’re feeling energetic, be sure to walk the 6.5km Malecon boardwalk or climb to the top of El Faro Lighthouse. It offers sensational views across the bay and you’ll have the added bonus of sharing the vista with the resident iguana population. Most importantly, the steep climb is guaranteed to give you a thirst for those $2 beers.

QI’LIN BARBECUE PORK RIBS
Full of flavour, hearty and sumptuous, who can go past barbecue pork ribs? Sticky and tasty, the salty-yet-sweet meal was a delight to the senses. These tasty bites were complemented by crunchy carrots, bringing a unique flavour. A pop of yellow pickled radish adds a welcome refreshing flavour.

With creative dishes and old favourites to boot, Qi’Lin has a vast array of divine, top-of-the-line meals to try.
CRISPY WALNUT CHICKEN IN A STRAWBERRY LIQUEUR SAUCE
What an unbelievable, unique flavour! This creation by Qi’Lin co-owner Annette Cheung was aromatic, sweet and, above all, delightful. A shock to the senses, it combined the crunch of the chicken and stickiness of the strawberry liqueur. This was a beautiful, sweet treat.

DUCK MEAT AND SCALLOP SOUP
How else do I say that all my Christmases have come at once? Starting with a wonderful aroma, this beautifully presented dish is the epitome of a thick, flavoursome soup. The juicy duck meat and tender scallops were soaked in a filling, home-style broth. This dish was unique, tasty and truly memorable.
For those who aren’t familiar with cassava it is a woody shrub and has an edible tuberous root, and Qi’Lin have created an absolutely stunning dessert with it. This cake isn’t too sweet and is a beautiful palate cleanser. The coconut adds a little crunch, while keeping a smooth consistency through the cassava cake underneath.

ON THE BIG SCREEN
BRIDGE BURNING AND OTHER HOBBIES BY KITTY FLANAGAN
LOVE, SIMON Stars: Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Garner, Tony Hale, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp. Rating: M Reviewer: Leigh Paatsch Verdict: 3/5 stars A very amiable, if unambitious adaptation of a recent best-seller by Beck Albertalli, Love, Simon has already drawn considerable attention around the traps. Simon (Nick Robinson) is moving into his final year of high school with the support of a loving family, a close-knit posse of friends, and the constant worry of living with what he calls “one huge-ass secret”. Not a person in his life is aware that Simon is gay. Coming out is something Simon believes might be easier to deal with once he leaves his home town to attend college in another state. However, before the year is through, Simon will have to confront the possibility that any choice regarding the timing of his own outing may no longer be in his hands. A yearning to communicate with someone else experiencing the same lonely process of hiding through their true self from the world proves to both the breaking and the making of Simon.
If you’ve ever seen this Australian comedian perform — whether live or on television — you’ll recognise her straight away in this book. Flanagan writes how she speaks in her comedy segments, which makes this a hilarious read. Not so much an autobiography as a collection of life stories, her matter-of-fact style in recounting memories had me in tears of laughter at times. At one point, Flanagan describes her then two-year-old brother as being “still at that awkward age where any dissent is managed by the parent tucking you under one arm, turning you into a human football and marching off with you even if you’re flailing around in protest.” It was also really interesting to get an inside look at the “rise of a stand-up comedian” and discovering that improvisation is actually quite uncommon — particularly in Flanagan’s case. This irreverent look at life — from childhood and work to travel and relationships — is perfect for a good laugh and a great pick-me-up any time. Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies by Kitty Flanagan is available from Allen&Unwin Book Publishers and local bookstores. RRP $29.99.
The reviewer was provided a complimentary copy of Bridge Burning and Other Hobbies from Allen & Unwin Book Publishers in exchange for an honest review.
DISNEY’S ALADDIN THE MUSICAL While Aladdin may be the main character, it is Genie who steals the show at Disney’s Aladdin the Musical with his hilarious quips. For even the most seasoned veteran of watching the film, the stage production still brings a fresh twist with a few new songs and new humour. Kids and parents alike will appreciate the amusing references, as well as the bright colours, loveable characters, and a few surprises. It is a production truly worth the trip to Brisbane. Disney’s Aladdin the Musical is on at QPAC, Southbank, Brisbane, until Sunday, June 3. Tickets start from $75.

TRAVELLING IN RETIREMENT BY LEANNE MCDONALD, DIRECTOR AND SENIOR FINANCIAL PLANNER OF CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS
Many Australians who are retired catch the travel bug. If you are keen to pack your bags and set off for a few weeks or months then it’s extremely important to make sure that you have enough money to finance your holiday. Here are some tips to ensure your trip runs as financially smoothly as possible: ■ See a financial planner well in advance of your trip. Speaking to a professional means that you will be able to get a better understanding in your mind on how much you need to save and appropriate strategies to do so. They can also advise on whether or not spending time overseas will have any effects on your retirement income or benefits you may be receiving. ■ When planning what type of money you are going to be bringing on your trip, you may want to consider multiple
options. Using a pre-loaded debit card will mean that you cannot overspend. However, it may be a good idea to also take a sum of cash in foreign currency with you for places that don’t accept debit, and a credit card for emergency spending. ■ Try to work out an easy comparison between the currency you’ll need and the Australian dollar, using a currency converter online. It can help you understand the amount of money you’re about to spend. ■ Taking a debit or credit card with you overseas? Don’t forget to check the expiry dates to make sure you’re not stuck while away. ■ No matter how well you plan and save, it’s always good to have something extra in case of an emergency. Travel insurance is handy if you find yourself
in an unexpected situation. ■ Your financial institutions probably have some good security measures in place and may put your accounts on hold when they are unexpectedly used in a foreign location. To avoid getting left in the lurch, let them know where and when you’re travelling before you leave. Whether you like to plan every detail or see where the wind takes you, being financially ready before any overseas trip can save you a whole lot of money and hassle down the track.

THE FULFILLING BUT WINDING ROAD OF STEPPARENTING BY ALECIA CONNOR, BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW ASSOCIATE
hopefully these tips will help. I have just started a relationship and my partner has children, what is my role? Some families with new partners/ step-parents enter the family and immediately take on the parenting role of the children. Others take more of a back seat role. There is no right or wrong approach. It is important that you do not undermine the other parents’ role or their position in the child’s life. Immediately inserting yourself as the primary carer and calling yourself “Mum” or “Dad” is generally not the best approach. Slow and steady seems to be more effective in this situation. How much involvement should I have with the ‘other parent’? Generally as a rule of thumb, we do
not encourage step-parents to immediately inject themselves into the other parents’ life unless invited to do so. While your intentions may be only good, your presence in itself may be unsettling and cause the other parent to feel as though their territory is being invaded. As a result of this, they may either retreat or attack. Either of these responses will not be beneficial, particularly if witnessed by the children. Therefore the message is to tread carefully. As your relationship grows, the other parent may in fact initiate contact with you. Whatever type of step-parent role you take on, remember you will undoubtedly make a tremendous impact on a little person’s life. While at times it can be a rocky road, I hope that this world will see more positive attitudes in the future.

So you have been on a few dates, enjoy each other’s company and are starting to think there might be some future ahead for you … then they drop a bombshell — they are in the middle of a bitter custody battle with their ex. You glance around the room, searching for the nearest exit, wishing you were on a plane and there were illuminated exit lights marking the way. While your breath is becoming rapid, you are aware of the eerie silence which is now creating a gaping hole between you. Being a step-parent can be a challenging role, and this becomes even more difficult when there are unresolved family law issues. You can sometimes end up witnessing text message wars, arctic cold changeovers and confused and upset children. If you are a step-parent, you may feel much uncertainty about your role,

TRAVEL ETIQUETTE TIPS BY PETA MURRAY
STICK UP IN CHINA
When supping in Shanghai, never leave your chopsticks standing up in the rice bowl. Vertical chopsticks are a sign of death and liable to cause grave offence.
FROM chopsticks in China to selfies in Sri Lanka and the shoe shuffle of Seoul, travel can be a cultural minefield for the uninitiated. But cracking codes of conduct can be achieved with the low-down on local know-how.
SACRILEGE IN SRI LANKA
Turning your back on Buddha in the tiny island nation of Sri Lanka is a sure-fire way to get the locals offside. And, yes, that rules out selfies with statues of the deity.
Pointing is a faux pas in Malaysia and Indonesia and sticking your index finger in someone’s direction is considered extremely bad form. If you must indicate, use your thumb.
In Croatia, general niceties like “have a nice day” are regarded as insincere. Superfluous smiling is regarded as slightly unhinged.
Punctuality is the key to making friends in Germany. Germany’s trains run like clockwork and you too should make a concerted effort to turn up on time.
Conversely, in Russia, a thumbs-up is the equivalent of giving someone the middle finger salute.
The Japanese consider slurping essential. The more noise you make, the more you are seen to be enjoying your meal. Loud laughter, however, and blowing your nose in public are both cardinal sins.
Putting your best foot forward in South Korea means removing your shoes whenever you enter a home or restaurant. The basic rule is that anywhere with carpet means leaving footwear at the front door.
GRUFF JUSTICE
SOUND BITES
INDIAN INDULGENCE
Always refuse the first offer of a drink or snack so as not to appear greedy. Acquiesce to the second round but remember to leave a little food on the plate to signify that you have eaten enough.
TEST OF TIME
SOLE TO SEOUL
WED OR BED
Religious laws dictate that many Egyptian hotels require proof of marriage before allowing a couple to stay the night, especially if one party is Egyptian.
RULE OF THUMB
PUTIN PERSPECTIVE
TEA TOTAL
Expect to be served just half a cup of tea in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan. A full cup means you’ve outstayed your welcome and your host wants you to leave.
HUNGER GAMES
Eating in the street is considered the height of bad manners in Rwanda. Local culture dictates that food consumption be confined to establishments like restaurants, snack bars and hotels.

TAURUS
Apr 21st – May 21st Get out the whistles, start blowing up the balloons — it is all systems go for the party to end all parties as you celebrate another milestone year and reflect on your past achievements. Great friends and a loving support group is all that Taureans really need to get to the top of their game. I see you’re going to achieve great things over the next 12 months.
GEMINI
May 22nd – June 22nd Gemini, it seems a frantic pace suits your lifestyle. Take time this month to put in place a ladder to success to achieve your goals. Set your sights high and push ahead. You can do anything you set your mind to, just have a little more faith in your ability.
CANCER
June 23rd – July 23rd All that work at the gym is paying dividends — it might seem like a hard slog but rest assured it will be worth it in the end. It is part of a de-stress campaign so keep on lifting those weights and busting some moves, soon your whole wardrobe may need a revamp with your body shape changing you will feel more confident — you are looking hot.
LEO
July 24th – Aug 23rd Your lifestyle choices are being examined at present so you may need to adjust your thinking. While it might seem like a great
idea to read self-help books, you need to practice what you have learnt. Soon you will be seeing the world through new eyes, and believe me it is going to be wonderful. Take some time out in May to enjoy the company of family.
comes great responsibility that can lie heavily on your shoulders. When you are feeling stressed instead of smoke coming out of your ears simply count to 10 — anyone with any brains will sense danger and head for the hills.
VIRGO
CAPRICORN
Aug 24th – Sept 24th Look around you, the world is opening before your eyes — this is the month to cast off your dreams. It could be a little scary but nothing a brave Virgo cannot do. So, it depends on where your goals lie — for some it will be new horizons and job adventures, or it could simply mean that your life will move in the different direction. Both dreams will bring satisfaction.
LIBRA
Sept 24th – Oct 23rd Slow down Libra, you are burning the candle at both ends. If you need to burn some excess energy then perhaps consider taking up a new hobby; one that challenges you. Some people get tired just being around you — secretly they are jealous and wish they had your drive and willpower.
SCORPIO
Oct 24th – Nov 22nd Well Scorpio you are meeting challenges head on and being able to make calm out of chaos is one of your best abilities. You are like Midas, everything you touch turns to gold, so if planning a big move it will go smoothly. If renovating you do need some stress release — there is nothing better than swinging a hammer to get out some unreleased tension.
SAGITTARIUS
Nov 23rd – Dec 21st You are positively beaming at present, it appears that work is going well for you which is brilliant and people are starting to notice. You know that with hard work
Dec 22nd – Jan 20th Goats are not good at handling the cold, now the cooler weather is coming you will see many goats start to complain about the weather. It is all that prancing around on their tiny hooves that keeps them warm. While they long to frolic in the spring they will need to baton down the hatches and get in a good supply of warm blankets to ride out the winter.
AQUARIUS
Jan 21st – Feb 19th You live for excitement, and you can expect even more this May. It could be a great time to head off for the snow and learn to ski or snowboard. It is all the rage, and with your sense of adventure and natural balance you should have no drama picking it up.
PISCES
Feb 20th – Mar 20th Don’t let negative energy stop you in your tracks this month, if you want to try to get ahead in your world you firstly have to let go of the fishbowl existence and launch yourself into new experiences. It may take time to learn all there is to know but once you have mastered the basics it will be smooth sailing.
ARIES
Mar 21st – Apr 20th You don’t enjoy the cold — it dampens your normal lust for life. When you eventually do step outside, rest assured it is to buy a new winter wardrobe. You do still need to look your best — no one likes daggy slippers and last year’s dressing gown. It is high end fashion all the way.
