hat an incredible year it has been! We started 2019 by chatting to Alison Kennedy (a local fundraising powerhouse and Business Woman of the Year), followed by local nurse Megan Ellis, who told us about her experience of working on the Mercy Ships in Guinea, Africa. We bragged about local leading lady Keira May Pepper, who landed a Hollywood role in a Netflix series, and we were regaled by Lyn Bowtell and Luke O’Shea’s life in country music. In our May issue, we celebrated winter fashion with a striking cover photo of local model, Louise Armstrong. Speaking of striking covers — we will never forget the powerful Gill Hicks and her survival story about the London bombings of 2005. The fabulous Alex Perry graced our magazine as well, talking about his meteoric rise to fashion fame, alongside the inspirational and fearless Ben Felton — the blind biker. September saw The Chronicle Garden Competition take centre stage, with local gardener Caitlyn Mason brightening our cover. As if this year couldn’t get any better, Jimmy Barnes, Ruby Slipperz, Suzi Quatro and Craig Bellamy all talked to Style about everything from new albums and music tours, to mental health and motivating yourself and others. The year was not without its downs, as we were forced to watch Queensland and New South Wales battle (and continue to battle) a crippling drought, with close neighbours running out of water and farmers losing it all. But, all in all, it has been a great year for Toowoomba and its people and we here at Style can’t wait to see what 2020 holds. Enjoy our last issue for the year and have a happy holiday period with friends and loved ones. See you all next year, The Style team

CRACKING READ

Local author Tara East debuts her mystery novel Every Time He Dies

BY DARREN BURTON

T

o say Tara East enjoys the written word is akin to declaring that Harry Houdini didn’t mind the odd parlour trick. A passionate student of the craft, Tara lives and breathes her beloved prose 24/7, as her ever–growing resume quickly confirms. The bright and bubbly author has a Bachelor in Journalism, a Graduate Certificate in Editing and Publishing, a Masters of Professional Practice Creative Writing, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Creative and Critical Writing and she’s currently completing her Doctorate in Creative Writing (USQ). Whew. Her articles on writing, literature, gender and culture have appeared in Writing from Below, Queensland Writers Centre, The Huffington Post and The Artifice; and her fiction has appeared in TEXT journal and October Hill Magazine (among others). The woman knows her way around a keyboard. So, it seems a natural, almost inevitable, progression that she has turned her talents to writing her debut novel, Every Time He Dies. The intriguing story follows a woman who finds a watch that is the same design as her deceased boyfriend’s (only it is haunted by a ghost with amnesia). 8 | December 2019

While trying to uncover the ghost’s identity, she becomes involved in her estranged father’s homicide investigation. The novel handles complex themes such as mortality, time, grief, identity, family and memory, yet the friction between its central characters often results in humour. It’s a labour of love that has been seven years in the making, but be careful trying to pigeon hole the story into a single genre.

grilled, enabling Tara to pull back the curtain on their professions to help capture the tone of her novel. “Early readers tell me the embalming scenes are their favourites because they’re so different,” Tara explains. “I asked an embalmer what he tells strangers when they ask what he does for a living and his response: “I say I’m a brick layer — it has a lot less follow–up questions!” was so good that I included an adapted version in the

Early readers tell me the embalming scenes are their favourites because they’re so different.” “It’s a bit of everything,” Tara laughs. “You might think it’s going down the conventional crime thriller route, but it also includes a supernatural/horror element; as well as some mystery and romance.” And, you can add to this an overarching veneer of total authenticity — which is why Tara says she spent significant time “buying a lot of people coffee” to assist her research. Detectives, embalmers, funeral directors and even psychics were all

book.” While she always knew she had a wide and curious anthology of stories bubbling inside…just waiting to hit the page, losing a close friend proved the catalyst for Tara to pen Every Time He Dies as a way to “express her thoughts and feelings about the grieving process”. The undertaking not only proved cathartic, but a great source of inspiration and gave an opportunity for self–reflection as well. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

feature | style

But, as much as Tara loved the daily grind and the intricate process of producing a novel from scratch, she also knew she had to dance with writings ‘ugly cousin’ — re–writing. Polishing, reworking, refining, modifying and often reluctantly discarding…it’s all part of the deal when attempting to deliver your best work. “I don’t know anyone who could claim to write the perfect story from start to finish…and if they did, I’d be a little sceptical,” Tara said. “I always had the climax plotted out in my head, so it stayed pretty true to how I wanted the novel to end — but I know the rest of it has been rewritten more times than I can count.” Fantasy author and assistant director for Black Phoenix Publishing Collective, Shayla Morgan said, “It’s rare to find an Australian–set book of this scope and genre that could stand among its international peers and hold its own, but I won’t be surprised to see this book find its success in all corners www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

of the crime genre reading world”. It’s high praise for a young Toowoomba author with the world at her feet. And as if completing full–length novels and the demands of ongoing study aren’t enough, Tara maintains an active writing advice blog at www.taraeast.com and posts weekly tutorials on her YouTube channel.

The pen may well be mightier than the sword, but Tara East emphatically proves that if you want to wield either with success, you’re going to need self–belief, inner courage and unwavering commitment.

Every Time He Dies is available in paperback and ebook at all major online retailers including Amazon, Booktopia, Bookdepository, Barnes & Nobel, iBooks and Kobo. December 2019 | 9

MAKING A DIFFERENCE, ONE FAMILY AT A TIME The 2019 Adopt a Family appeal is in full swing, but there are still families that could use your help this Christmas

F

or most, Christmas is a time of joy, gifts and quality time with family, but there’s many families in our community who experience financial hardship or difficulty. The Adopt a Family for Christmas Appeal works with local charities and welfare agencies to identify families in need that you can ‘adopt’ by donating gifts, hampers or food. The appeal was officially opened on Wednesday, November 20, and runs until Wednesday, December 11, and charities involved this year are Uniting Care, Lifeline, Bush Connection, Mercy Community, and St Vincent De Paul. Adopt a Family is now more than 20 years old, with rugby league champion Shane Webcke as ambassador since 2006. Shane might be a Broncos and Maroons legend and successful businessman, but he never lost sight of the trying conditions his own family dealt with when he was a child. It’s this empathy for the Darling Downs’ strugglers that propelled him to be the ambassador. He says having compassion for those less fortunate was essential to being a good person, especially during the festive season. “Over time, it really starts to sink 10 | December 2019

in that there are a lot of people who do it tough,” he says. “In life, we are screaming along, and there are a lot of people who are just underneath the surface and it is easy to forget them. “This is a great way of drawing attention to that. “It is an initiative that a lot of us can help with and it makes a major difference in so many family’s lives.” Shane also says he is noticing growing income and wealth inequality in Australia, with more

“If you miss the bus, and the bus is going quick, it leaves really quickly. “With some of these people, someone helping them will be the difference between a very bad outcome or a good outcome.” News Corp regional general manager for south-west Queensland Rohan Gosstray says he is proud of the statewide campaign’s origins in Toowoomba so long ago. “The support is growing, and it started in Toowoomba,” he says. “We’re up to 200 or 300 families

LEARNING HOW TO NAIL DRESSING THE RECTANGULAR BODY The straightest of the female body shapes, this athletic figure is also arguably the most fun to dress THIS MONTH: THE RECTANGLE

his shape is extremely versatile. T With shoulders and hips virtually the same width and weight

distributed evenly throughout your body, you can have great fun dressing up or down. The feature those with rectangle-shaped bodies can show off most is those shoulders. Halter tops, racerback styles, off-the-shoulder, and strapless shirts look incredible. As an overall statement, the key with this body shape is to keep it balanced. If your upper half seems broad to you, balance it by accentuating the

legs, and vice versa. This particularly applies if you’d like some definition in the waist: wear skinny jeans or structured pants with a flowy top. If you’d rather give volume to your bust, pair a form-fitting shirt with loose bottoms. Big collars and embellished necklines are also great for this, as is under-bust detail or ruching. Most likely, your back and neck is also a great feature of your body so show it off alongside those shoulders with high necks and open backs — like the classic halter top. The rectangle body shape is one of the few silhouettes that can truly pull off the halter-neck so well.

When it comes to sleeves, you’ll want to have limited structure due to your straight shoulders, but that’s really your only restriction. The reverse it true of coats and other outerwear — play up your figure with structured styles. For dresses, the rules are similar to those for shirts: there are none. Pick what part of your body you want to feature today, and go your hardest. Flowing styles can attract attention to your bust, while fitted waists add that extra shape. Once again, halters and open backs look great on you. Finally, if you want to show off those legs and make yourself look taller, pick pants with flared bottoms. Overall, the best thing about this shape is how versatile it is — pick a part to feature and have fun! NEXT MONTH: THE PEAR

GET FESTIVAL FASHION READY

n the summer of 2019, we prepare for another festival season, and not just Christmas. IMusic festivals are where the most Avant Garde

outfits become reality. If you can think it — you will see it. Here are Style magazine’s top five fashion phenomena you can expect to see this summer at the next music festival.

BELT BAGS

Not only a convenient pocket with a zip, belt bags have become an important fashion accessory. Available in every possible shape, size and colour — including holographic — the belt bag has migrated from the waist of middle-aged tourists and onto the next generation of festival-goers.

GLITTER

From beards to braids, glittering up is an affordable alternative. It doesn’t last long without an adhesive but be sure to have a vacuum on hand when getting ready, because this sparkly supplement will go everywhere.

SKIN

Conservative dressing goes out the window when it comes to festivals. More is less, particularly in these warmer months. Be prepared to see some backless tops, legless pants and pant-less legs.

CHAINMAIL

No, we don’t mean to dress like a knight. But metal chains have been a fundamental of festival fashion as of late. Wrapping yourself in metal beads and chains is a quick up-style to that pleather skirt you’ve had in the cupboard since 2005.

FLARED JEANS

The bell-bottomed look has come and gone a million times since their conception in the ‘60s. Corduroy and stripes seem to be this year’s flared material choice — and we totally agree. 16 | December 2019

STAYING HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS BY GINA HORN - DIETITIAN

C

hristmas and the summer holidays can be a particularly difficult time for some to stick to their regular healthy eating and exercise plan - Christmas parties and family gatherings all seem to revolve around food and alcohol, particularly sugar-laden or deep-fried snacks. And although the festive season is a time to rest and relax with loved ones, you don’t need to completely fall off the health wagon. ■ Firstly, preparation is key: before an event, have a small snack or meal so you’ll be less tempted by unhealthy choices. Some nuts, a few veggie sticks with dip, or avocado on wholegrain crackers can tide you

over while the appetisers come out. ■ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! We know drinking water is so important, so try alternating one alcoholic drink with one water (or other non-alcoholic drink). This also reduces the chance of a nasty hangover the next morning. ■ Take turns with your friends or family being the designated driver for the night, to save your liver and your wallet. Everyone always appreciates a free ride home. ■ Stay active during your break by doing something you enjoy and

including the whole family. Go for a walk before the festivities begin, have a game of backyard cricket after lunch or throw a frisbee around the beach or park. Even if you’re not doing your regular workouts, every little bit counts and will keep your energy levels up for all the social events. ■ Lastly, enjoy some treats but really savour them so you don’t overdo it and feel guilty. Eat mindfully and remember one of grandma’s famous rum balls won’t kill you.

TAKING THE CONFUSION OUT OF WASHING HAIR inding the perfect hair-wash F schedule is often impossible for us women.

Sometimes we’re told not to wash our hair often, other times were told frequent shampooing is best. So many mixed messages. So, what’s the real answer? We got a few experts to weigh in on

the debate, and it all comes down to your hair type, texture and lifestyle. Remington Australia brand expert Stewart Foreman said as a general rule you should be scrubbing every two to three days. “It’s best to not wash your hair every day as this strips the hair of its natural oils, but if your hair tends to

get greasy quite quickly, it can be washed more frequently,” he said. If you’re the type of person who washes their hair more frequently because of activities such as the gym or swimming, then a mild shampoo is recommended to keep it in the best condition, according to Rob Smith, Dyson’s senior principal scientist. “Each hair follicle has its own sebaceous gland which secretes oils onto the hair and scalp. Some people may suffer from too much sebum production in which case washing more frequently can help keep your hair looking fresh,” Mr Smith told News Corp. “Your hair also picks up pollutants from the air, including odours, so keeping it clean can help minimise this and, if you swim, then washing your hair soon after can help minimise chlorine damage.”

HAIR TYPES

Hair with thicker strands can go longer without cleansing, while thin tresses tend to get dirty and oily quicker. Curly hair tends to be on the dry side so can go longer without

washing, while straight hair may require more frequent washing. Coarse hair can be left for longer without a good scrub, while silky hair can’t. “Fine, oily hair will need more washing than thicker, dry textured hair,” Schwarzkopf Professional national ambassador Dee Parker Attwood said. She agreed that washing your hair too often threw natural bacteria on your scalp, and this could lead to scalp dryness and dry hair strands too. And when this happens, it makes things like styling very difficult — which is why it can be hard to manage your hair during summer in dry heat. “Dry shampoos and wearing your hair up can prolong times between washing,” Ms Parker Attwood added. “The better you look after your hair, the healthier it will look and feel. It will also make it more manageable and easy to style. “I always think it’s easier to put the groundwork in rather than deal with the problems once they present themselves.”

If you’ve noticed your hair becoming weaker with lots of split ends forming, it’s probably best to take a step back from straightening. Mr Smith advises to avoid styling with “extreme heat” as it is a significant contributor to hair damage. “It makes it harder to align the strands, smooth and shape them resulting in less shiny hair,” he said. Even when blow drying hair, it’s important to always use thermal

protectants. “Don’t blast hair with too much heat or use a speed setting that’s too fast for your hair type,” Mr Foreman advises. “If you have thick hair the fastest speed setting is the best, whereas if your hair is more of a medium to fine texture I would recommend the medium speed setting. “Use the cool shot function after drying to close cuticles and prevent frizz.”

TOP TIPS TO PREVENT FRIZZY HAIR 1. Don’t over dry your hair when blow-drying as this can actually

cause more frizz. Most people use the highest heat and speed setting with the thought that it will give them a faster result but it’s best to use a medium setting with a slower speed to achieve a sleek, smooth style 2. Always use the cool shot button to set your style when blow-drying. This will allow the cuticles to close which tames any frizz and will give you a nice, smooth look 3. Implement a leave in conditioner after you wash your hair 4. Use an anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner 5. Implement anti-frizz products like oils and serums

HANDY TIPS FOR A SAFER CHRISTMAS E

veryone wants to make the most out of the Christmas holiday season – so make sure you think about safety and not just fun. You’ll want to visit friends and family – not the hospital emergency department. Though if you happen to need an emergency department, know that St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba provides 24/7 emergency care for adults and children by experienced senior medical consultants and nursing staff. 1. It’s the little things

Watching young children open their Christmas presents is always a joy. Just remember to keep an eagle eye on small parts, batteries and anything that babies and toddlers might be tempted to chew or suck on. 2. Breathe easy

When it’s dry, hot and dusty – or, worse, bushfires are about – make sure you check in with elderly friends or family to make sure they are ok. 3. Water wise

Despite the drought and water restrictions, water safety still needs to be top of mind. A child can drown in as little as 6cm of water so make sure there is always an adult around any body of water – no matter how small. (P.S. If you love swimming, it’s a myth that we need to wait 30 mins after eating. So jump in!)

4. Road rules

Windows down or air con on? Doesn’t matter – never leave a child in a car, no matter how quick you think you’ll be. 5. Thirsty?

Coffee, alcohol or sugary drinks are dehydrating, so remember to top up with extra water or natural juice drinks. 6. Triple S

Slip, slop, slap may have launched 30 years ago, but it’s still the best way to protect yourself from the sun – even if you are just heading out to the shops. 7. Fresh is best

Fresh fruit and vegetables contain plenty of water, so include them in your diet to avoid dreaded dehydration. 8. Listen up

Depression can often increase over Christmas, so be mindful of those

around you who may be on their own or suffer from depression and make sure they know they can talk to you. 9. Timing matters

If you love to walk, run, ride or skip outside, venture out early morning or in the evening to avoid the heat. 10. Burning issues

If there is plenty of activity in your kitchen – especially on Christmas Day – make sure children are kept away from ovens, stovetops and any hot liquids.

11. Just don’t

It only takes two small glasses of wine or two beers to put you over the limit – if you are going to have some celebration drinks, don’t drive.

12. Food Safety

Avoid tummy upset by practising good food hygiene. Remember to wash your hands, keep prep areas clean and avoid food that has been left out of the refrigerator.

CHANCE TO REVISIT A CHRISTMAS PAST BY JAN WARD - TOOWOOMBA AND DARLING DOWNS FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

26 | December 2019

ith Christmas soon here, as family historians we would love to know how our families celebrated this season in the past. Maybe Grandma or even Great Grandma has shared memories with you. Maybe you have photographs of your parents at a gathering on Christmas Day. But what about previous generations? How did they celebrate? We are so lucky here in Australia because we have two wonderful resources. Firstly, online, we have TROVE (http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home) which is the worldwide-acclaimed website for the National Library of Australia. TROVE has digitised many Australian newspapers and has a very good search engine. Put in your family name and you will be surprised at what you find. … birth, death and marriage notices dating back to early settlement, insolvency, murder, accidents, auctions. In the gossip columns or local news you may find that ‘Mr and Mrs So and So’ are staying with her parents for the festive season. Browse the local paper near Christmas to find social events and advertisements for Christmas specials. Just put in the name of the local community and filter by date to find the local story of Christmas. The second great source is that here at the Toowoomba and Darling Downs Family History Society (TDDFHS), we have elves who are busy indexing The Chronicle and The Darling Downs Gazette, some of which are not yet on TROVE. Our indexers often pick up names that TROVE cannot because of poor print quality. On microfilm we have Toowoomba Chronicle (1861-2005), Darling Downs Gazette (1860-1922), Warwick Daily News(1919-1958), Warwick Argus (1881- 1918), Crows Nest Record (1917 -1934), Crows Nest Advertiser ( 1934-1969) and many more. You never know what you may find. In the local news in the weeks before Christmas there were speech days, school breakups, dances and more. I found my father winning the egg and spoon race at his local school breakup (aged five)...I wish I could tell him. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Happy

1000th

birthday

ith the recent birth of baby Maya, the dedicated team at My Midwives celebrated 1000 babies born under their loving care. On November 29, hundreds of mothers, hospital representatives and supporters gathered together to celebrate not only the birth of the 1000th baby, but also the tremendous impact My Midwives has on the community. “It was a nice chance for us to look back on everything,” My Midwives manager Liz Wilkes said. In 2010, the My Midwives clinic in Toowoomba performed the first Medicare-rebated birth by midwifery in Australia, leading the way for a more comprehensive, supportive and ongoing birthing experience across the country. The services offered by the team at My Midwives are varied and intensely personal — from general medical procedures like routine

check–ups, scans and the ordering of blood tests, to so much more than what you can expect anywhere else. “We look after women from the moment they find out they’re pregnant, to when the baby is about seven weeks old,” Liz said. My Midwives are with their clients every step of the way, assisting mothers with the birth — whether it’s a water birth, natural birth, or caesarean section — and helping women prepare for not only the physical aspects of giving birth, but the mental and emotional aspects as well. Whether it’s a new mum struggling with feeding problems in the middle of the night, an unscheduled check–up to assuage fears, a quick chat, or a surprise birth at the clinic, Liz and her team are there to help. “We’re on call 24/7, even over the Christmas period,” Liz said.

With a particular focus on perinatal mental health, My Midwives provides education to new parents and their extended families and friends, to ensure the birth and the period thereafter is a happy experience for everyone involved. New mums and families can expect to receive advice on all their questions and fears; from dealing with visitors soon after birth, to sleeping and feeding problems and everything in between. “It’s really about seeing the whole family grow,” Liz said, who has seen the same mums coming back to My Midwives for the birth of their second and third children over the years. My Midwives also runs mothers’ groups, where mums of all stages can connect, learn and find support, particularly regarding the short post–birth period when mums often feel isolated and overwhelmed.

CARDIO VS WEIGHT TRAINING

or as long as people have been aware of their own existence, they’ve been arguing about the benefits of cardiovascular exercise against those of weight training. It’s entirely plausible that even the warriors in David’s biblical army had this debate. So, after all this time, do we know which approach is better for weightloss and health? Yes and no. While you will burn more calories during a cardio session, your metabolism will stay elevated for longer (and burn calories for longer) after a weight session. So, as far as weightloss is concerned, there is no difference between cardio and weights. You will lose weight when you burn more calories than you take in, irrespective of what kind of exercise you do. The answer, then, is that you should do both. Coupled with a healthy, balanced diet — not a crash diet that starves your body of nutrients — a well–rounded exercise routine is still the only real way to lose weight and build a healthy body. It is also the only way to keep the weight off for longer when you can’t get to the gym (like when you go on vacation for a couple of weeks). Adding strength training to your cardio program will have the added benefit of increased muscle mass, which burns fat for longer and keeps your skeletal frame upright and strong. It’s also important to remember that not all strength training necessarily includes weights; you can use your body weight (like when doing box jumps, for example) and resistance bands. Professional athletes — even the sprinters and long distance runners — combine both facets of exercise to unleash the full potential. When it comes to your overall health, an individualised approach is best; speak to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine or eating plan. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Diabetes:

SPOT THE MYTHS

D

iabetes is a serious (and very complex) illness which can affect the entire body. There are three main types of diabetes; Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. ■ Myth 1 — Diabetes can be prevented This assertion is not true for all kinds of diabetes, as Type 1 is an autoimmune disease which cannot be prevented and has no cure. Evidence suggests that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented in 58 per cent of cases, but not all (as risk factors differ from patient to patient). ■ Myth 2 — You have to be overweight or obese to develop diabetes Although being overweight is a significant risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes, it is not the cause and will not guarantee the development of the disease. The cause of Type 1 diabetes is unknown, but this type of diabetes is not associated with lifestyle factors like inactivity or body weight. ■ Myth 3 — No one in my family has diabetes, so I won’t get it Your family history is only one of several risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes. — INFORMATION FROM DIABETES AUSTRALIA

GIVE THE GIFT OF LOVE

T

ypically, Christmas involves gift–giving (expensive or otherwise), mountians of food and drink, the welcome company of friends and loved–ones, and an overall feeling of joy and celebration. For many Australians, however, this is not the case. Many go hungry at this time, while others are dealing with the effects of domestic abuse. Spare a thought for those less fortunate than you this Christmas and endeavour to make their festive season a bit more positive. Whether it’s volunteering your time at a homeless shelter (even if it’s just a couple of hours), donating clothes you haven’t worn all year, or collecting donations from your dinner guests, you can make a small difference in the lives of others this year.

SMARTER SHOPPING Try these helpful money–saving tips to keep a handle on your spending this festive season

A

nyone who has ever over–spent on a Christmas gift will be familiar with ‘buyer’s remorse’. Here are some ways to prevent that this year:

BUDGET AND PLAN

It may seem an obvious tip, but many people don’t really know how to budget effectively and, more importantly, many people don’t keep to their budgets once they reach the end of their available cash. Start by deciding on a total amount you’d be willing to spend on everything from gifts and drinks, to wrapping paper and anything else Christmas–related. Then, make a list of the people you’d like to buy gifts for, as well as a list of groceries you’ll need for your Christmas feast and supplies for gift–wrapping.

Finally, divide the available funds among these items and people; $50 on alcohol, $200 on mum’s gift, etc. How you divide your funds is up to you and will depend on what you feel needs to be prioritised above the other items on your lists. Be realistic with yourself here — it’s no use creating a low–cost budget if you’re going to over–spend the moment you hit the shops. And, choose afforable alternatives.

UNWELL CHILDREN ‘DRIVE THEMSELVES’ TO THEATRE ick kids in the Toowoomba S Hospital will now have a sweet ride to the operating theatre thanks

to the generous donation of Margaret and Mark Toleman, who have gifted two new miniature electric cars to the Paediatric Ward. Inspired by a similar story in the United Kingdom, Margaret and Mark wanted to provide a fun way to make the experience of going in for an operation less daunting for children. With self-drive and remote-control options children in the Toowoomba Hospital Paediatric Ward will now be able to drive themselves to theatre. The donation’s impact was seen immediately, as excited children jumped in the drivers seat to take a spin around the hospital. “Our daughter sent us a video of these little cars being used, I think it

was in the UK, and we thought it was a nice idea,” Mr Toleman said. While the cars spread joy across the paediatric ward, they also hold a special meaning to the Toleman family; the two number plates reading Elizabeth and Terry + Tom. “The foundation likes anyone who donates to have a connection with the hospital,” Mrs Toleman said. “This car, named Elizabeth, is named after my still born sister and this one over here is named after my two brothers who were killed in accidents, they were all born at the Toowoomba Hospital. “It’s nice to think the kids will be happy on their way to surgery.” Toowoomba Hospital Foundation

“When the cow came to us … I felt so happy. And seeing the cow, I felt in my heart that my future is going to improve, and definitely my life is going to be changed from now onwards.” — Tavish, a father who can now care for his family after receiving a cow

chief executive officer Alison Kennedy said the cars were a first for a Toowoomba Hospital. “These kids are lying in a bed, not knowing what will happen to them, so even being able to distract them for those few moments to pop them in the car, it’s beautiful.”

NAVIGATING CHRISTMAS SOLO BY BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and it has done since about September. That lead time doesn’t make it any easier for you, or a loved one, to be prepared for the first Christmas following separation or divorce. Here are a few tips to help make

38 | December 2019

the most of the holiday season after separation: ■ Make arrangements for where children will be over Christmas as early as possible. If this is your first Christmas without your children see if you can have another day designated as your "Christmas" for this year. ■ Discuss present ideas and purchases with the other parent

before acting on them. A puppy is pretty hard to return on Boxing Day, no matter how well-intentioned it was at the time. ■ Write a list of Christmas rituals that are really important to you and keep them up. It is important to recognise how they make you feel personally. If that doesn’t work – make some new rituals. ■ Surround yourself with loved ones who understand and respect that you may be going through a tough time and will be there no matter what. ■ Don’t overindulge. Too much alcohol can affect judgement and it is a lot easier to avoid saying those things than trying to pick up the pieces afterwards. That tub of cookie dough ice cream is like a nice big hug at the time, but a minute on the lips… ■ Do something you enjoy. Read a book, pick up an old hobby, take a bath, go for a long walk, treat yourself to that gift you’ve been wanting. ■ Appreciate and acknowledge there will be an element of sadness that will take time to heal. If you find it is taking longer than you thought, or would like, consider seeking structure therapy to help you move on.

ARE YOU PAYING FOR INSPECTIONS? BY ROS BURTON - PRINCIPAL THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE

I

magine if you bought a cinema ticket, sat down to munch on your popcorn and, just as the curtains pull back, the usher taps you on the shoulder and asks you to pay for the movie to start? Yes, you’ve paid for your SEAT….but the movie is extra. How would you feel? Ripped off? I ask this odd question because the last Style column I wrote stirred up a real hornet’s nest apparently, after I

touched on the importance of doing regular routine inspections and what you should expect from your property manager. Soon after print, I was contacted by a couple of landlords who asked me if our office charges for a rental inspection – physically going to a property to monitor its upkeep and condition. The answer is we don’t – never have, never will…but I was shocked to hear some agencies from around the state do. Isn’t that what your management

fees are for? As a busy, time-poor landlord, the reason you put your rental property under management is for total peace of mind. For a small tax-deductable fee, we monitor maintenance of the property, read water meters and charge tenants for usage, pay water bills and council rates, we ensure all regulations are adhered to, we screen tenants to ensure they are the right fit for the property, and we guarantee that all-important rent arrives on time, every time. I am a firm believer that if you are paying me to manage your property then I should also be inspecting it regularly as part of that agreement. Most importantly, you should NOT be reaching into your pocket again to make that happen. Having a property manager work in your best interests, should be a standard part of the management agreement you have with any agency. So remember, whether it’s the movies, real estate (or anything in life, really) – if you’re paying for a service be sure to keep an eye on any additional costs and ask yourself: “What’s this cost for and is it worth it?”

At The Real Estate People, we consider our word is our bond and we understand how clear communication and following through on promises is an integral part of good customer service. So, whether you’re buying, renting or selling, call us today or visit our Herries Street office and discover how we can help you sleep easy at night.

HOW TO MAKE A SANDPIT I

■ Establish where you want the pit to sit and then mark its boundaries with an eco-friendly spray paint. ■ Remove the turf and dig a trench approximately 80mm to 100mm depending on how deep you want the pit to be. ■ Place sleepers (cut to the length of the frame you wish to create) into the hole and secure them with bugle-head screws to ensure the project maintains its integrity and shape (and doesn’t create pinch points for little fingers). Sand back the sleeper edges to remove any splinters. ■ Line the bottom of the pit with a fine layer of gravel (to assist with drainage) and then fill with fine white double or triple washed river sand for best result. If you wish to make a creative feature of the pit, you can surround it with pebbles, mulch or coloured bark and have it double as a striking visual among your garden greenery.

t’s pretty safe to speculate that almost everyone has a special memory of visiting the beach as a child. Sitting there in the golden sand with the summer sun on our backs while we enjoy an ice block and the roar of the ocean will always be a cherished recollection. So, whether you have young children of your own or even grandkids – a sandpit at home is a great addition to the back yard. It’s guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment as the young ones become captivated building grand sand castles or mesmerising mythical worlds, practising the culinary arts or repeatedly emptying that dump truck. There are a number of commercially constructed sand pits that will quickly hit the mark, but if you’re looking to DIY, it’s probably one of the easiest projects you could undertake:

WHO IS TO KNOW... BY DEAN SPANNER DIRECTOR KENNEDY SPANNER LAWYERS

T

here were two farmers who lived side by side, a long time ago in the days of the Chinese Emperor. One day, the wise old farmer’s son brought home 20 wild brumbies. His neighbour commented how fortunate this was as, back in those days, 20 horses meant wealth. The wise old farmer’s response was "who is to know what is good and what is bad". A few days later that same son fell

off one of the brumbies while attempting to break it in. He suffered a nasty broken leg. The neighbour commented that this was truly devastating. The wise old farmer’s response was "who is to know what is good and what is bad". The next day the Emperor’s army swept through the villages taking every able-bodied male over the age of 16 to fight in the war. They took one look at the wise old farmer’s son and left him alone in view of his broken leg. This month I have racked up 25 years as a solicitor. For the last 20 of those years I

have specialised in helping people hurt through no fault of their own. It has afforded me the privilege of helping some incredible people through extremely difficult circumstances that life can throw up. Time and time again, I see the universe deliver what initially appears to be a tragic event for my client. But with time, support and resilience, ultimately my client goes on an incredible journey, resulting in arrival at a much happier place than prior to the accident. Often I witness a stronger, more enlightened soul emerge. The next time life sends you a difficult challenge, remember the wise old farmer’s words ..."who is to know what is good and what is bad". CHANGING HOW...

...WE DO THINGS W

e wouldn’t normally show you the back end of a new house under construction, half buried in scaffolding, but ‘new era, new approaches’. These pics are from the private back lane. This is one of a row of new, energy-efficient homes to be completed in The Avenues estate on the northern outskirts of Highfields. Together with the developer, we’re boldly setting a new precedent for green suburban living. What’s immediately different is the size of the blocks. To traditionalists’ eyes, they are compact — around the 400sqm mark, but these new homes are anything but small. With more than 221sqm of relaxed living space in the home, yet on barely a 100sqm footprint — even when combined with the separate double garage, it is still less than half the available block. The key is going double storey and building well — utilising the space creatively and intelligently. This four bed, three bathroom home feels grand and spacious. Ceilings are 2700mm (9 foot), with shady 600mm wide eaves. Smart glass is fitted, and all external walls (cypress framing) have heavy-weight woven sisalation with high density insulation batts press-fitted into the wall stud spaces — no gaps allowed. Even at this half-built stage, it is remarkably cooler inside. Two unique features: there are no garages or driveways to mar this street. They will all overlook the spacious park, which has undercover barbecue areas, and spacious places for kids to play. With all the homes facing Alves Terrace, it’s

creating the feel of ‘The Avenue’. At the back there is a dedicated lane to provide private access to all the garages, which, at 9m x 6m, offer ample room for two cars, plus a generous-sized workshop area. They don’t look like an afterthought tin shed either, but rather blend in perfectly as an integral part of the home. New era, new thinking, new homes.

IN IT TOGETHER KNOW THE OWNERSHIP TYPES BEFORE BECOMING JOINT OWNERS

W

hether you and your partner want to buy a home and start a family, or you and a couple of friends want to help each other into the property market by pooling your resources, you will end up sharing ownership of a significant asset with another person (or multiple people). In Australia, there are two types of joint property ownership — joint tenants and tenants in common. Understanding the fundamental differences between these types of ownership, is essential and should always be thoroughly discussed with a legal practitioner before buying a

property with another person.

TENANTS IN COMMON

The owners of the property own it in equal shares and enjoy the legal right of survivorship. This means that, should one of the property owners die, their share automatically gets divided equally among the remaining owners. In this case, if a husband and wife owned their home as tenants in common and the husband passes, the wife would automatically assume ownership of the husband’s share in the property (and will become the

sole owner of the whole property). If a four friends owned the property as tenants in common and one friend died, that friend’s share would be split equally between the remaining three friends. If it’s owned by tenants in common, a property cannot be sold without the consent and signatures of each owner, as they all have an equal share in it and its proceeds.

JOINT TENANTS

The owners of the property own it in specifically stipulated shares, which may be equal or unequal, depending on what the parties decide when buying the property. The four friends may decide one of them will own 50 per cent of the property (maybe because he or she put up half of the deposit), with the remaining 50 per cent split equally among the other three friends. This type of tenancy is a popular choice when dealing with investment properties, as the owners can sell or bequeath their shares without the consent of the other owners. Joint tenants are not protected by the right of survivorship and their shares will not automatically transfer upon their death.

FILLING THE GAPS M

ariska Fenner is an artist with an eclectic approach to making art — the materials she uses varies according to her mood and current interests. “In saying this, the main portion of my works are watercolours in the form of ‘painted collages’, which is largely the result of a love for all things paper,” Mariska said. “For me, there is nothing quite like the process of soaking and stretching a quality piece of paper in preparation for painting,” she said. Mariska’s earliest art memory is drawing on the hallway wall with a red pencil. “I guess you can call it my first mural,” she laughed. Despite having had access to

various studio spaces before, Mariska said she works best at a kitchen table. “I live in a one–room flat and, at times, there is more artwork than floorspace — the largest watercolour painting I’ve worked on was more than three metres wide and two metres high and I lived around it for close to a year.” Doing things this way, curbs Mariska’s tendency to procrastinate. “It’s hard to put off something when it’s staring you in the face day and night,” she explained. In her art, Mariska explores people’s inclination to ‘fill in the gaps’ in the absence of information. “As soon as you place two images side by side — no matter how

unrelated — the brain begins to create links between the two. “This is because we are wired to seek out meaning.” Inspired by the works of American painter Walton Ford, Mariska said she would have loved to do a commission for her grandfather, who was always her dearest supporter.

Style Artist Laura White chats to Style

Tell us a little about yourself I was born in Argentina and came over as a child. I’m married and have two adult sons. I have a purpose-built studio set out the back among my vegie garden. It’s very much my happy place. Describe your style? Contemporary still life. I’m very much drawn to colours and compositions that instil calm and serenity. I try to create breathing spaces, allowing the natural beauty of the objects to hold the focus. I usually work with an initial underpainting followed up by the building up of layers and glazes as I go. This works very well for the ceramic vessels I love to paint. What inspires you? Other artists, listening to podcasts, and

sharing thoughts and ideas with other creatives. I love heading into Melbourne CBD for a day of gallery hopping. When did you start painting? Although I loved art at school, I never entertained the idea of doing it for a living. I first picked up a paintbrush again at the ripe age of 46. I’d recently terminated employment with Victoria Police and needed some time out. I visited a local gallery that offered art classes, and I was hooked. How has your art evolved? Being a perfectionist, I was always bound to be drawn to details. But over the years my confidence has grown, and I’ve been able to move away from that and loosen my style a little.

Why do you enjoy painting? For me, I go into a zone when I’m working on a piece, and it’s comparable to a session of meditation. I find it totally relaxing and therapeutic. I love the whole creative process. I love the interaction with the galleries and clients, as well as the most rewarding part of seeing my piece in its forever home. Some highlights of your artistic life? Having nine solo exhibitions in six years, my artwork being featured in four magazines last Christmas, and two very successful exhibitions at The Moree Gallery and Michael Reid Sydney. What is your dream goal? To live on acreage and have a converted shearing shed as a studio.

KEEP A COOL HEAD PROTECT YOUR ENGINE FROM OVERHEATING

E

verybody knows someone who talks about their car as if it is a person (you might even be that guy or girl); some people going as far as naming their trusty machines. Think about the iconic 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 featured in Gone in 60 Seconds — and how many people named their car ‘Eleanor’ after that film’s release. With character and charm like that, it’s easy to see why people think of cars as something more than just metal. It’s not surprising then, that cars can struggle in warmer weather (in much the same way as their human counterparts), due to added stress on their cooling system. Here are some things to keep in mind to prevent Eleanor from blowing her top off (and what to do if she does overheat):

COOLANT LEVELS

Think of your car’s coolant as its sweat — it cools the body down during exercise. As the engine runs, the coolant flows through passages in the engine block and head, absorbing the heat from the engine and carrying it to the radiator, where it is cooled again by the air–flow over the car. It should be obvious, then, that your coolant level and quality is really important to maintain. Check your coolant levels regularly (your car’s manual tells you how to do this) and, if you notice coolant loss, have the cause repaired immediately.

TEMPERATURE GAUGE

Keep an eye on your car’s temperature gauge (particularly during heat waves and those typical

hot summer days), as this will warn you if Eleanor is getting ready to overheat.

COOL DOWN SAFELY

In the unfortunate event that your car overheats, pull over as soon as it is safe and switch off the engine. Never remove the radiator cap from a hot engine, as this literally keeps a lid on pressurised hot liquid and vapour and can cause severe injury to you and damage to your car. Don’t pour cold water into the hot radiator either, as this can also damage the engine. Even though it can take a couple of hours, let the engine fully cool down by itself, while making arrangements for the cause of the overheat to be found and fixed. Just adding water won’t necessarily solve the problem.

BOOKS FOR EVERYONE THIS CHRISTMAS FOR THE LITTLE ONES: THE BEACH WOMBAT AND SAM AND JULIA

Based on the adventures of two young mice, the accompanying pictures are photos of the real Mouse Mansion which was created in the Netherlands from cardboard boxes, papier mache, and many household items.

I

t can be a challenge to select the best picture book for gift-giving, particularly when there are so many on the market. There are some that simply stand above the crowd, however, and The Mouse Mansion: Sam and Julia and The Beach Wombat are two of these. The latter, written by Susannah Chambers and illustrated by Mark Jackson, features gorgeous art of Victoria’s national park Wilson Promontory and simple verse which is charming in its rhyme. While the story itself — following mum and baby wombat on their typical day — is beautiful, it’s the illustrations that make The Beach Wombat so lovely. Sam and Julia is a charmer for both young and young-at-hear alike — particularly those already familiar with the art of dollhouses and miniatures.

The Beach Wombat by Susannah Chambers, illustrated by Mark Jackson, and The Mouse Mansion: Sam and Julia are published by Allen & Unwin Children’s. RRP is $24.99 and $29.99 respectively. Available now.

FOR THE CHILDREN: WOLF GIRL 2 — THE GREAT ESCAPE

R

eputably one of Australia’s best-loved writers for kids, Anh Do is back with the second instalment in one of his newest series. Gwen, or ‘Wolf Girl’ as she is now more commonly known, has been separated from her family and any other humans for four years — living in the woods with her ‘pack’ of four dogs, a wolf, and an eagle. When she discovers a couple of men in the forest, excitement leads her to throw caution to the wind and she ends up captured, away from her furry family. Wolf Girl has a Jungle Book vibe to it in some aspects: Gwen’s pack taught her how to survive, and they readily communicate with each other.

There is a lack of background and setting, but the younger reader is less likely to notice or be bothered by this — the story is fast-paced and exciting with lovable characters; leaving the reader on the edge of their seat for book three. Wolf Girl 2: The Great Escape by Anh Do is published by Allen & Unwin. RRP is $14.99. Available now.

FOR THE TEENAGERS: THE QUEEN OF NOTHING

I

f you’ve missed the hubbub over young adult faerie writer Holly Black’s latest series, you’re one of a rare few. The trilogy’s keenly-anticipated conclusion hit shelves late last month, and the book certainly lives up to expectation. After being exiled from Faerie by her husband High King Cardan, Jude finds herself flatting with her older sister while splitting time between training little brother Oak, watching reality TV, and doing odd jobs for other outcast Folk. Her life is once again turned on its head when twin sister Taryn appears, begging for a favour that will lead Jude back to the other realm and the faerie king she still

loves despite his betrayal. Naturally, it is advisable to read the first two tomes — The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King — before this book, but provided you read their synopses, it is not strictly essential in order to understand The Queen of Nothing. The book mixes courtly intrigue with deadly action and tense occurrences in a story that is both immersive and fast-paced. That the author has invested time and effort into world-building is clear, but the information is scattered enough in the telling that the reader feels certain aspects of the Faerie realm are natural; a ‘well, of course’ sort of moment rather than the classically disliked ‘info-dump’ of setting up a fantasy world. The trilogy has been popular for a reason, and with such a satisfying conclusion is will be intriguing to see what Holly Black comes up with next. The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black is published by Hot Key Books. RRP is $19.99. Available now.

FOR THE ADULTS: 488 RULES FOR LIFE

P

ossibly one of Australia’s most-loved comedians, Kitty Flanagan is back with another hilarious book. Based on what started as a joke in her regular segments on The Weekly, there are actually only 447 rules — with room at the back of the book to add your own. Flanagan has even divided these rules into handy sections, so wherever you are, whenever you are, you can avoid an etiquette faux pas. From around the home and at the office, to food and dating, there’s a selection of guidelines for everything. Many of the segments include a ‘special sealed section’ for those really keen for rule-keeping. What might give you even more of a laugh is that the ‘arts and entertainment’ special section for reality television is actually a ‘special removable section’. And if you disagree or feel offended by any of the rules herein, simply refer to Rule 1: “if you don’t agree with a rule, forget about it, move on to the next one”. That being said, the entire book carries Flanagan’s voice so

much that even if you do disagree with a rule or two, you’re still guaranteed to get a laugh out of it. Both useful for everyday life and for getting your daily laugh in (it’s good for your health, remember), Kitty Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life is certain to be a great hit with whoever you gift it to — or for sneakily keeping for yourself. 488 Rules for Life by Kitty Flanagan is published by Allen & Unwin. RRP is $29.99. Available now.

FRESH SUMMER MENU he culinary team at the Park T House Café has begun to release their summer lunch and dinner

menus. From tofu to duck, it would be an understatement to say that every diet can dine at the Park House Cafe.

VEGAN TOFU PLATE

This plate will make the most carnivorous diners go vegan. Taking advantage of the summer produce, be surprised to find avocado, fried lemon pepper tofu and wakame seaweed in front of you. The vibrancy of the dish is to be expected, especially when you taste the delectable roasted capsicum sauce that lines the plate. With the smoothness of the avocado and the crunch of the salad, your mouth will be pleased it tried this dish. Tofu is simultaneous the underdog

and star of the dish. If you didn’t order it for the tofu — I can guarantee you will next time. Head chef Bryant Seow is very proud of his team and his food and says the ability to serve everyone is a priority. Be sure to try this vegan and gluten-free option because it will have everyone salivating at lunchtime.

DUCK MARYLAND

Who would have thought a citrus and lime caramel and duck would go well together? Heading into the festive season, duck is just what you want for dinner at the Park House Café this Christmas. Chef Seow has 15 years’ experience under his toque and it shows; intricately designing a main of mild spice perfect for a summer evening.

Digging into the crispy twice-cooked duck, be sure to find the stand-out yellow curry coating the plate. The soft steamed pilaf rice breaks up the duck maryland so eloquently there isn’t an element it won’t work with. Chef Seow and his kitchen have been prepping for summer since September and this dinner option is sure to be a favourite come those warm nights when you want a hearty meal without too much heat.

A DAY IN PARADISE TAKING A DAY TRIP OUT TO LADY MUSGRAVE ISLAND

BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN

E

ver since my first trip to Lady Musgrave Island got cancelled due to stormy weather, I’ve been chomping at the bit to get out there. The opportunity presented itself over the Queens Birthday weekend, when my husband and I packed the car, grabbed our overweight staffy, and hit the road with my in–laws and their ancient pomeranian. We stayed in pet-friendly holiday accommodation in Agnes Water; a gorgeous house with wonderful views of the ocean. We arrived late afternoon and immediately started calling around for a boat to take us out to Lady Musgrave Island. As it was school holidays and short notice, a Saturday trip was impossible, but we hit the jackpot

with a Sunday trip — from Bundaberg. We spent all of Saturday on the Agnes Water main beach, which has an off–leash area and plenty of shade in which to relax. Our staffy loved the water — but only to tummy depth and no further — while my mum–in–law’s pomeranian did not budge from the dry, cool safety of our shaded spot at the foot of the dunes. An early night saw us hitting the road at 5am Sunday morning, leaving the dogs to enjoy some peace and quiet for the day — they were all tuckered out from the excitement of the day before. The trip to Lady Musgrave Island was smooth and quick, with the sea looking like a big pond all the way.

Once anchored, we took one look at the crystal clear reef water and the millions of marine animals below its sparkly surface, and decided we would be doing nothing but snorkelling that day (despite the glass-bottomed boat trips and the island exploration walk we were entitled to join). What a great decision. We spent hours in the water and saw so many colourful fish, it made my eyes water — we even had the honour of swimming with a massive green turtle. The water was calm and warm, the sun was out without a cloud in sight, and the Great Barrier Reef was out in all its splendour. We could not have asked for a more perfect day to spend in paradise.

The most remote inhabited island in the world holds a particular fascination for me in its isolation. Only about 250 people call this volcanic island home, living nearly 2432 kilometres from the nearest inhabited coastline of South Africa. To get there involves a lot of careful planning, some luck, and a six–day trip over the Atlantic on a research vessel from Cape Town.

Shrouded in mystery, this Chilean island can be reached by air. Home to numerous ancient stone heads, carved by the island’s original inhabitants, Easter Island’s

uniqueness is a powerful magnet for the curious.

RWANDA

Trekking through the African jungle in Rwanda’s Parc National des Volcans and coming to within seven metres of a majestic silver back mountain gorilla, must be one of the more profound experiences on earth.

MONT SAINT MICHEL

The rocky tidal island and 8th century French commune inspires awe and tickles the fancy of my imagination. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is visited by more than three million people a year and, one day, I will be one of them.

W

hen a schoolboy crush persists for more than a decade, you know you’re looking at true love. Nicolas Welch and Sarah Schmidt met in primary school when they were 11 years old, maintaining a close friendship (and harbouring a bit of a crush) until some time after high school, when they finally started dating. Nic said he knew it was love the moment he met Sarah, which explains how the pair successfully navigated a long–distance relationship for a couple of years, while Sarah lived in Adelaide. Nic proposed to Sarah on her birthday, overlooking the Bunya Mountains. “He pulled out a pack of Krispy Kreme doughnuts and, nestled inside the transparent box, was a purple Michael Hill jewellery box,”

Sarah remembered. Having eaten a doughnut, she was momentarily distracted while looking for hand sanitiser, until she realised what was happening. “Nic shared his heart, got down on one knee, and asked if I’d do him the honour of being his wife,” she said. After being together for about five years, Sarah and Nic were married in March at South Toowoomba Baptist Church, with the reception held at George Banks. Opting for an elegantly styled wedding with a bit of boho glam mixed in, Sarah said their special day was filled with excitement and laughter, despite the unpredictable weather conditions. “The mix of overcast and clear weather made for a fun atmosphere during our bridal party photoshoot,” she said.

MADLY IN LOVE

Complementing their colour palette, were fabulous floral arrangements of late summer and early autumn hues. Floral arrangements adorned the arbour at the church and, at the reception, candles filled the beautiful rooftop restaurant and high–set greenery topped the tables. In a nod to Sarah’s love of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, the wedding cake featured a whole tier of these treats. And, as a special treat, a childhood friend of Sarah’s — Chang PoChing of The Voice — graced guests with his smooth vocals at the reception. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii and returned with hope for the future of the Welch family. “Our plans include embracing this new season of being married, buying a home, and having some kiddies,” Nic said.

IS YOUR DOG PUSHY? BY KATRINA DIEM — ACCREDITED DOG TRAINER, THINK CANINE TRAINING & BEHAVIOUR

A

common scenario we see far too often in family dogs these days is pushy, over-excited behaviour. This may include behaviours such as jumping on people, pawing for attention, jumping all over the couch when you sit down, or barking for attention. Sound familiar?

All of the above listed behaviours are what we call “attention-seeking” behaviours. In most cases, the dog continues to do these behaviours, because the owner continues to reinforce them. So, if the instinctive goal of the behaviour is to get attention, then we need to ensure that the dog does

not get the attention when displaying these behaviours. For example, a dog jumps up on people because it works — they will either get cuddled and patted, or yelled at and pushed away. Either way, it is all attention, so it all continues to reinforce the jumping up. If we start consistently ignoring the dog when it is jumping up, then following through with rewarding the dog when it is calm with four feet on the ground, the clever dog will start to understand that the behaviour of jumping up is now useless and the key to getting what they want (i.e. attention) is to be calm with four feet on the ground. Ignoring the attention-seeking behaviours sounds simple enough, but how many of us have tried without success? The problem usually lies with our consistency and/or technique, and that is where the trainers at Think Canine can show you how to implement the best training strategies and techniques for you and your dog.

YOU BETTER SHAPE UP Under–performing super funds could be forced to merge BY ANDREW WHITE — ASSOCIATE EDITOR, THE AUSTRALIAN

T

IS YOUR SUPERFUND UNDER–PERFORMING?

he Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) is set to step up pressure on under–performing superannuation funds to shape up or merge from this month, with the release of heatmaps detailing high fees and poor returns. APRA deputy chair Helen Rowell said the maps would give super fund trustees a clear picture of issues that needed to be addressed and motivate them to act. Releasing a discussion paper and sample heatmap last month, Ms Rowell said the colour–coded heatmaps would also help direct APRA’s enforcement activity. “Trustees can expect APRA’s supervision intensity to reflect the intensity of the colour shading on the heatmap,” Ms Rowell told the annual Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia conference in Melbourne.

“If trustees don’t fix these issues within a time frame that is acceptable to APRA, we will be requiring them to consider other options, including a merger or exit from the industry in some cases.” Heatmaps for more than 100 MySuper funds are set to be released by the middle of December, with colours ranging from yellow to dark red highlighting under–performance in investment returns, fees and costs, and sustainability of member outcomes. A newly empowered APRA has been adding tools and capabilities to eliminate persistent under–performing fees and force mergers to create fewer, larger and better performing funds in the aftermath of the Hayne Royal Commission and a Productivity Commission review of superannuation.

CREATIVE THINKING Here are some interesting ways parents have convinced their toddlers to drink more water — winning against all odds

veryone has heard about the ‘terrible twos’ and have probably stood witness to an apocalyptic meltdown in the grocery store at least once in their lifetime. Raising toddlers is no easy feat — and that’s putting it relatively mildly — so, how do you convince a raging bundle of irrational emotions to drink more water? Here are five creative solutions tried by mums around the world: ■ On her blog ‘Mommy Shorts’ Ilana Wiles said she challenges her daughter to a peeing contest, telling her she will win at water if her urine is a clear colour, and lose if her urine is yellow. ■ On the BabyCenter website, a staff

■ On the New Idea page, Deborah Grunfeld suggested making home–made popsicles from water and frozen fruit pieces. ■ On the Practical Parenting website, Alex Harmon advised mums to add a crazy straw into the deal, or to let their toddlers choose their own sippy cup (making the experience of drinking water an exciting one). ■ Writing advice for the Very Well Family page, Catherine Holecko suggested making water intake a family challenge, leading the way by being good water role models.

member said she makes water available at all times; handing her daughter a water bottle and asking her to take five sips (even if she says she’s not thirsty), with her daughter almost always realising she’s thirsty and drinking more.

THE PURRFECT PETS It may be a dog–eat–dog world, but cats clearly take the cake ats are the most popular pet in C the United States, outnumbering dogs by about 14

million animals. In Australia, dogs still reign supreme (with about 38 percent of households preferring ‘man’s best friend’ to their feline foes). Despite this, cats are still a very popular option as pets and can give the canines a run for their money in the ‘coolest pet’ contest. Cat–lovers will no doubt know this already, but these facts prove cats are incredible:

THEY FALL WELL

FOR ALL THE CRAZY CAT LADIES (AND GENTS)

Due to cats reaching terminal velocity at heights above five metres, they can fall from great heights, absorb the impact, and survive. They don’t necessarily walk away unscathed, though, only alive. Please don’t throw your cat from the roof to test this theory; just trust

science.

THEIR EARS ARE NUTS

They have more than 20 muscles to control the movement of their ears. This lets their ears swivel independently, pin–pointing a sound accurately — to within 76 millimetres — from almost a metre away.

THEY ARE CHATTY

Cats can make an incredible variety of sounds — more than a hundred, in fact — compared to the meagre 10 managed by dogs.

THEY ARE SMART

A cat’s brain is about 90 percent similar to that of humans, their cerebral cortex has roughly 140 million neurons more than that of dogs, and their brains have 1000 times more data storage capacity than an iPad.
