NOTE erry Christmas from the Style team! We’ve had so much fun putting together this festive edition for you, our readers, and it seems the Christmas spirit is infectious with decorations popping up early all over the office. Rumour has it that one colleague has been humming carols since early November, though it’s yet to be seen if this is due to festive spirit or just a way to annoy staunch Christmas-starts-in-December supporters. Christmas isn’t all tinsel and candycanes, however. For some children and their parents, sadness and loneliness during the festive season is all too real due to mum or dad being in prison. This edition, we discovered an organisation that’s bridging this gap between parent and child, starting with a donated Christmas gift. You can read all about it on page 8. Style also had a chat with renowned singer Jeannette LoVetri, who is coming to Toowoomba in January. Read the incredible story of how she found a teacher against all odds on page 10. With the start of the Silly Season comes the start of summer, and it’s even more imperative to be sunsafe during this time. While you shouldn’t neglect sunscreen, hats, sunsafe clothing and staying inside during the hottest part of the day, the makeup you choose can help keep the UV rays at bay as well (p28). Throughout this issue of Style magazine, you’ll also find hints and tips for party outfits, events to keep you busy this month and next, and plenty of great reads to enjoy with your next cuppa. Enjoy, and have a safe and happy Christmas and New Year!

distance WHEN ONE WOMAN REALISED THE CHILDREN OF INMATES WERE PRACTICALLY INVISIBLE, SHE SET ABOUT TO CHANGE IT – ONE CHRISTMAS GIFT AT A TIME BY JESSICA KRAMER
F
or thousands of children, this Christmas will be spent without their father, mother, or both. And for many, this absence won’t be understood, but will be keenly felt. As of June this year, there were more than 40,000 people full-time in correctional centres. Almost 10,000 of these are in Queensland. (Australian Bureau of Statistics) Many of these inmates are fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles and aunts, with little to no contact with the children in their lives. Some of the children know where the absent family member is and some don’t, but the impact is the same — they will be absent on Christmas Day. But what if these children could know that while their parent is absent, they have not been forgotten? This is where Prison Fellowship Australia comes in with their program Angel Tree. Each year, thousands of Christmas gifts are purchased and distributed to children of prisoners through the program, which is coordinated at a state level by Glenise Dagwell. Last year alone, over 2200 gifts were distributed to the children of inmates in Queensland – 500 more than the year before. “Lists of the gift requests are given to regional co-ordinators, who allocate to churches and corporations who have volunteered to be involved,” Glenise said. Not all areas in Queensland are fortunate enough to have their own regional co-ordinator, so Glenise often steps into the role herself. 8 | December 2018
The gift lists are very confidential and only include the basics deemed necessary to purchase a present – the child’s gender, age range, and interest. It’s even more strict if the child is under protective services. “If the child is under the protection of Child Safety, permission to give a gift is requested first and then, if granted, the gift goes straight to their Case Worker,” Glenise explained. Once the gifts are purchased and wrapped, a trusted person delivers them to the home of the child’s carer. Last year, a mix-up at one of the correctional facilities meant the gift request applications were received late. A prison chaplain drove over an hour to ensure all the gifts were delivered before Christmas Day. “When he arrived at one house, the woman who answered the door started crying because her son was in prison,” Glenise said. “The prison chaplain realised he actually knew the son, and he was able to tell the woman that he would see him next week and tell him the gifts were received. “It’s things like this that helps the family stay together; it means the family will be reunited one day and we’ve helped, which makes it all worth it.” It was a similar idea that was behind the creation of Angel Tree and its parent organisation Prison Fellowship. Former chief counsel to President Richard Nixon, Chuck Colson served time for Watergate, and he spoke to the other

prisoners while he was an inmate. “He realised there was nothing to help families, both for the family member in prison and those outside,” Glenise explained. “When he got out, he did something about it, and Prison Fellowship was born. “Then one year a female prisoner got a gift and she didn’t understand who gave it, but through it she realised the kids of inmates were ‘invisible’ and started Angel Tree.” It’s a story that gets played out across the country again and again. A family member goes to jail, the remaining family are ostracised, and the children don’t understand why no-one will play with them and why mum or dad are suddenly gone. “These little ones are innocent, but there is such an impact on their lives because mum or dad aren’t around at the moment,” Glenise said. “The gift, while it is supplied and delivered by an organisation, actually includes a note or card from the parent in www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

jail,” Glenise said. “Through it all, the prisoner can realise there’s more to life than what’s going on inside the jail – they have kids waiting for them to come home. “The parent thinks twice about re-offending.” The beauty of getting organisations to help with Angel Tree is that the care has the possibility to go far beyond a gift at Christmas. “We want to help and make Christmas a happy time, but also give them extended support,” Glenise says. “There are so many grandparents whose children are in jail, so they end up looking after their grandchildren. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
“Often churches who meet these people through Angel Tree, help them throughout the year with the children. “There’s one church where their youth get along beside the kids and help them.” Each year Angel Tree seems to get bigger, with schools and businesses chipping in alongside the churches and corporations. “Some schools or kindys have their kids getting involved by getting them to bring in gifts for donation,” Glenise says. Last year Glenise turned up to an office and was astounded by the amount of gifts in the foyer. “Whenever the staff donated, the management promised to match it, so they
had a ball because I told them to buy whatever gifts they wanted as I could find the kids to match. “I got to the foyer and there were presents everywhere.” Glenise has also met groups who make Christmas cards, which then get passed on to another group who hand-write the messages for the children and wrap the gifts. “Everyone gets together and does it. Sometimes there is an affluent church with no children near them, and a poor church with heaps of kids nearby, so they work together to buy and deliver the gifts.” This year, government changes in the correctional system has meant a lot of inmates were moved to other correctional facilities – which is the perfect opportunity for Toowoomba to get more involved. “Because of this change, there are a lot more children near Toowoomba and we’re going to need more organisations to donate,” Glenise explains. “Everyone is happy at Christmas, particularly in the lead-up – it’s a happy time, and you give to those close to your heart. But these kids don’t get anything.” When Style magazine last spoke to Glenise in November, there were 11 organisations that had volunteered for Angel Tree in the Garden City, but the need is for many more. “People can just drop gifts off at designated pick-up points or to chaplains, or just call Prison Fellowship and we’ll arrange something or tell you where to go to drop them.” December 2018 | 9

The
songbird THOSE WHO WISH TO SING, ALWAYS FIND A SONG
BY LEANDRI VAN STADEN
J
eannette LoVetri is one of the most highly regarded and recognised vocal experts in the world and she’ll be coming to Toowoomba again this January. During the 2019 McGregor Music Retreat, USQ will play host to the amazing Jeannette, who will present a nine–day professional development course for singing teachers and singers, using her trademarked Somatic Voicework. Her life’s story stands as testament to what can be achieved with the right sort of support, a deep–held belief in yourself, and an overwhelming love for singing. At the urging of her first singing teacher, Jeannette bought a Joan Sutherland recording —Coloratura Spectacular. “I fell in love. I didn’t know human beings could sing that way. I played it over and over and dreamed that, some day, I might be able to sing like that,” Jeannette said. Fast forward a couple of years, and Jeannette was cast as the lead in stage productions of The Music Man and Show Boat. “Show Boat was a great success and gave me a chance to further develop my skills,” Jeannette said. At the time, she had just been accepted to the Manhattan School of Music but didn’t receive a lot of support from her parents, who didn’t see why she should attend college — especially for music. But, despite this, she was allowed to 10 | December 2018
attend college as a voice major while working three jobs to help pay for the expenses. Jeannette’s first voice teacher at college had been a Wagnerian soprano and terrified her. “She made it very clear during my first lesson that I wasn’t much to work with and that I had many ‘bad habits’ she would fix,” Jeannette said, adding that she gradually became more stressed as the months wore on. “That spring, I began to feel like I was choking while singing. It got so bad, I couldn’t sing without crying — I would

sit at the piano to practice, and cry.” Her father put an end to her formal education after that, not wanting to pay for tuition if Jeannette was going to be reduced to tears. However, Jeannette knew she needed more training, so set out to look for a new singing teacher. She found a lovely, supportive lady
who praised her talents at every lesson. “But I didn’t think that was helpful; I had no delusions about not needing further work, so after a while, I stopped seeing her.” Next, Jeannette found another Wagnerian soprano (with a massive reputation) to teach her. “Like the other soprano, this one equally had no use for my voice,” Jeannette said. She then made up her mind to find someone with valid information to share. In 1977 she first had the thought that scientists should do research on different styles of singing, to find out how they worked. “I could not possibly have known then that the following year I would encounter something that would bring that idea to life in big, bold colours.” In 1978 she attended a symposium at Juilliard School of Music in New York. “I was really clueless in terms of what was being presented by the scientists, but I knew in the core of my soul that I had ‘come home’ to what I had always been seeking in terms of vocal www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

knowledge. The symposium changed my life,” she said. Jeannette believes her younger self would be amazed at herself today. “All these years later, I look back and I am amazed that I didn’t give up. I have worked with Broadway performers since 1980 — many leads in all sorts of shows — and I have worked with many multi award–winning artists in my studio, keeping their voices in shape (and some for more than 30 years),” she said. She also takes students referred to her by medical doctors and speech pathologists, to help them back to vocal health. She has worked as a vocal consultant with (among many famous names) actor Daniel Radcliffe, Grammy Award winner Adele, and multiple Grammy Award nominee, Björk. Jeanette started teaching students in 2002 at the request of the former Dean of www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle
a well–respected conservatory in the USA and said the course materials she developed there became the basis for the LoVetri Institute for Somatic Voicework that will be offered at USQ. Jeannette explained her motivation for founding her institute was born from a frustration with the training she’d had when she was young. “I was distrustful of some of the early methods of vocal training, because they advocated strange manoeuvres and produced unpleasant sounds,” she said. “I couldn’t find training courses that combined all the things I had come to regard as necessary in one place, so I set about to create it myself.” She described her method as producing an authentic, free expression in singing, and allowing singers to develop control over their sound and their art. “In contrast to some other methods, we
discourage deliberate movements of any of the structures within the throat. Everything is about natural vocal production that leads to enhanced skill, vocal health, and stamina,” she said. Next year, Jeannette will be assisted by Dr Melissa Forbes, a senior lecturer in contemporary singing music at USQ, and trained in Somatic Voicework. Dr Forbes first met Jeannette in 2009 and said she was struck by Jeannette’s presence and deep understanding of the function of the singing voice. “I was so fascinated by her approach, I applied for and received a Churchill Fellowship to complete her course in the USA in 2011. The LoVetri Institute had such a profound impact on my understanding of the singing voice, I felt compelled to run the program here at USQ for local and interstate singing teachers,” Dr Forbes said. Dr Forbes believes the upcoming McGregor institute is an incredible opportunity for locals to learn from one of the world’s best. To the students of McGregor, Jeannette shared these words of wisdom: “Sing in a way that makes you feel good about yourself and the music you want to express. “Understand that your voice and body will serve you well for all the years of your life, if you respect them both. “Trust your own instincts but listen to others who are experienced and have useful advice to offer you on your journey.” December 2018 | 11

YOU DON’T NEED THAT THIRD HELPING
HOW TO SAY NO TO HOLIDAY FOOD PUSHERS BY LIFESHAPE CLINIC
F
or those of us with health in mind, Christmas can be a challenge. This challenge can stem from internal thoughts, the sights, smells, and all too often, the people. Yes, the people – your relative with the extra serve of pavlova just for you, or your well-meaning parents who dish you up a pile of potato ‘salad’. Before you know it, your carefully thought-out plan for eating healthy is out the window. So, how do you be assertive of your right to eat healthy, and respond appropriately? LifeShape Clinic dietitian Nicola Moore has compiled a list of easy, polite ways to say ‘no’ and stick to your plan: ● "Oh, thank you for thinking of me Nan. That Pavlova looks amazing, but I am still feeling full from lunch, so I will wait a little while before I take some." ● "I love your potato salad Mum, and I bet it tastes extra delicious today. Would you be able to save me a portion, so I can eat it tomorrow when I am not as hungry and can truly savour it?" ● "Oh thank-you for offering, but I’ve prepared some of my own dips and fruit salad that I would prefer to start with. You are welcome to have some." ● "No mate, I am right with my soda water and lime at the moment. Thank you for offering. I will let you know if I’d like a drink later." ● "Thank you so much! Would you mind if I saved this for later?" Or, "would you mind if I saved this for my son? He loves these cookies!" "The DESC model provides a guide for assertive behaviour, specifically when asking another person to make changes," says Nicola. "Describe the behaviour, explain what the effect it is having on you, specify what you would like, and explain what the consequences will be for you." So, there you have it! Some very practical advice on how to handle to food pushers this Christmas. For more information, contact LifeShape Clinic on 1800 567 348 or visit www.lifeshape.com.au 14 | December 2018

LIGHTING UP THE CITY W
ith Christmas spirit in full swing and judging under way for the winners of this year’s Christmas Lights Competition, one cannot help but sing along to the Beach Boys when they say: The houses turn on their Christmas lights at night; it’s worth the wait the whole year through just to make happy someone like you. And, as is the case with the Beach Boys, outgrowing Christmas Day (or the lead–up to it) is not an option. For the 30 entrants in this year’s competition, Christmas is a time to share the joy. What better way to do that than lighting up houses and office buildings throughout Toowoomba? Every night until Christmas Eve, between 6.30pm and 9.30pm, lights will be shining from every nook and cranny of the properties entered into the competition. This year’s judges will choose winners for each of the five classes — best decorated home, runner–up best decorated home, first–time entrant, best neighbourhood, and best nativity display.
The competition, presented by Betta Home Living, will be judged on creativity and theme, overall visual appeal, the variety of colour and decorations used, and the degree of difficulty (or technical skill) brought to bear by the contestants. The winners will be announced in The Chronicle on Saturday, December 15, and will share in a total prize pool of $2600. Remember to grab your copy of The Chronicle on Thursday, December 08, for a handy map lighting the way to each entrant’s property. Take a drive this December and share in the spirit of Christmas.

COME ONE, COME ALL TO THE DAZZLING LIGHT DISPLAY
HO!
HO! HO! Christmas Wonderland is back
S
ince its inception by the Burstow family 16 years ago, the annual Christmas Wonderland has become somewhat of a Toowoomba tradition to many families. From magical light displays, to the entertainment provided by local and roving groups, face painting, barbecuing and cake sales, there’s something for everyone. The whole community is invited to experience the joy and wonder of Christmas and to support this year’s three major beneficiaries — Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland, the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, and Toowoomba Hospice. More than 85,000 people attended the 2017 event and raised about $90,000 in support of the main beneficiaries, with a further $5,000 donated to smaller support organisations. This was an incredible show of community spirit — and all it took, was a gold coin donation of about $1.10 per person! Whether you celebrate Christmas for religious reasons or not, doing something fun and benefiting your fellow man in the process is what the festive season is all about, so get out there this December and celebrate in the best way possible. Come enjoy three weeks of lights, fun, and Christmas spirit under the warm Queensland night sky, with no chance of snow interrupting the entertainment. www.thechronicle.com.au/lifestyle

Model, Constance Bailey
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?
I grew up in Narrabri, NSW. My Pop and Dad were cattle farmers, so we spent a lot of time on the farm and the stock routes surrounding Narrabri. Growing up in a rural area gave me a love for the country, which is something I am still very passionate about today. I love taking my son back to the farm where we can go motor bike riding, horse riding and yabbying.
HOW DID YOU START MODELLING?
I did ballet as a child, so I was always on stage from about five years old, but I was 16 years old when I first walked a catwalk and did my first editorial for a local clothing store in Narrabri.
WHAT IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER (SO FAR)? I would say it’s a toss–up between
SCOOP signing with my new agency (Chic Management) who put me on a nation–wide contract, and working at Audi race week at Hamilton Island.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST HURDLE (SO FAR)?
The majority of my work load lately has been based in Brisbane or the Coast. Now that I live in Toowoomba, it means a lot of travel back and forth, which means more time away from home and my son.
ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING MODELS?
Working in the industry, you definitely need to have a thick skin — not everyone is going to like your look and it’s normal to get a lot of knock backs. Aligning yourself with supportive brands and a supportive agency makes the job a lot more rewarding.
Have you been given all the options with your hearing? Sometimes the restoration of your ability to hear again can be simple — such as removing excessive ear wax or providing an invisible hearing aid. Or it may be more complex — such as assessing for a hearing implant when traditional hearing aids are no longer enough. Whatever your situation, we are 100% local and independent, able to provide all hearing solutions.
NEW Wax Removal Service: A specialist ear wax removal service is now available using state-of-the-art technology.

MERRY SIMPLE CHRISTMAS BY SARAH KEELEY, STYLE COLUMNIST
S
Beautifully crafted Jewellery & Watches for every occasion!

22 | December 2018
aying the word, "Christmas" can either make you spring for joy or have you running for the hills. So, why is it that we have made the Christmas period such a stressful time that really should just be an opportunity to give thanks, rest and share time with loved ones? My advice…Plan ahead, stick to a budget and learn to say no. We know the date for Christmas 365 days in advance, so why do we all rush to the shops and act like the world is ending? Write out a list of people you need to buy for and start chipping away a few months, or even weeks in advance. There are always amazing sales in the lead up to Christmas and I can assure you no one is going to know what date you bought their gift. If you’re hosting Cousin Sally and her several children over Christmas (or even just planning on staying put for a few days yourself) it’s always good to plan, prep and budget for the meals ahead. Write out a meal plan, delegate meals, drinks or snacks to your guests and prepare in advance. I don’t see why we need to raid the supermarket like it’s D Day to enjoy Christmas or eat five different types of proteins in one meal. Keeping it local, fresh and simple without all the fuss means everyone can enjoy the day and we don’t end up overindulging. We are all busy people working hard to keep the motor running. It is okay to say no to that barbecue or afternoon drink. Rest, take count of the time you have to regroup and prioritise where (and whom) we spend our time with. If your sister-in-law doesn’t float your boat, it’s okay to say no to going to her house for a drink. Trust me. Doing nothing on your break should be completely okay. Enjoy your Christmas, don’t go broke or grey trying to enjoy it. Merry simple Christmas.

GETTING THOSE PERFECT SIDEBURNS T
here is more to the humble sideburn than meets the eye. Gone (generally) are the days of the bushy mutton–chop style, but there are still many more sideburn styles to be
found. While it could be argued that you should pick whatever style you prefer, there is actually an art to choosing based on your face shape —
Treat
and most certainly an art to maintaining the look. The short sideburn is perfect to balance out a triangle–shaped or rectangular face, as well as adding width for oval and pear shapes. Possibly the easiest to maintain, a short style is also neat and precise for more formal work and other functions. You can also add texture by keeping them somewhat bushy without looking like a caveman. Long sideburns probably sit alongside short ones as the most common style. Perfect for framing the face, you can finish the sideburns just below your ear or keep them so long that the line between beard and ‘burn is virtually indistinguishable. This look is best carried off by those with square or round faces, or if you have prominent cheekbones. If you’re feeling more adventurous and know what will suit your face, there is the skinny sideburn, tapered sideburn, or slender pointed sideburn. Regardless of the design you choose, it is essential to keep your sideburns neat at all times. Regular trimming and daily combing is a must, but using a grooming product can help as well.

PICKING YOUR FESTIVE OUTFIT W
hether you’re intending on making a fashion statement or not, most people put quite a bit of consideration into what they wear for Christmas — be it for the actual day, or for parties and functions during the Christmas season. It can be so difficult to choose what to wear, however, and to know what type of outfit suits what type of occasion. Here Style magazine shares an easy–to–follow guide so whatever the occasion, you can dress to the nines.
STEP 1 — THE DRESS CODE
It’s not as common as it used to be to receive official invitations with the dress code listed for events and get–togethers. A gathering for work at a restaurant or bar will often require casual cocktail dress, but a useful tip is to check out the social media account for the venue and gauge the formality of dress from the photos. The same goes for if you’ve been invited out with friends, but often in this case you can tone down the formality a little more.
STEP 2 — THE FAIL–SAFE
Sometimes you can be as prepared for the dress code as could be, but still turn up to the function to find you stick out from the other revellers. A cute dress can go from casual to semi–formal just by adding classy heels and a clutch. Meanwhile, you can dress down by adding a light cardi or casual, simple jewellery.
STEP 3 — HAVING FUN
You could arrive to an event looking the most glamorous version of yourself, but if you can’t move without getting blisters on your feet or having a wardrobe malfunction, where’s the point in that? When planning your outfit, consider all the possibilities and dress appropriately — will there be dancing at this work party? Is there a possibility you’ll have to sit on the ground at a family picnic? While you want to look amazing, it’s also important to be comfortable enough to enjoy yourself.

not all doom and gloom. When breast cancer is detected early, the prognosis is really good. Though this is in no way superior to an official check by a doctor and mammogram, one way to detect breast cancer is to check yourself regularly at
This is good for a visual check — look out for contour changes, swelling, dimpling of the skin, puckering, or changes to the nipples. You’ll want to inspect with your arms at your sides first, then when raising your arms high overhead, and finally by resting your hands on your hips and pressing firmly to flex chest muscles.

Place a pillow under your right shoulder and put your right arm behind your head. Examine your right breast using a circular motion with the finger pads of your left hand, remembering once again to cover the entire area and armpit. Repeat the process for your left breast.

ENJOYING THE
KEEP YOUR SKIN FREE FROM SUN DAMAGE
Thwarting the hot summer sun’s UV rays
S
ummer is here, and with it comes the slathering on of sunscreens. A common complaint with keeping sunsafe is the greasy nature of many sunscreens — particularly on the face. While many people are willing to slip, slop, slap on their arms, legs and neck, several would rather don a hat to protect the face. It should come as no surprise, however, that wearing a hat is not enough to protect the face from UV rays. Even if you don’t get sunburnt per se, UV rays can still do a lot of damage to your skin and speed up its aging process. We don’t recommend you stop using sunscreen and hats, of course, but there are many makeup products you can add to your usual routine that add to sun safety for your face. A quick tip: the higher the SPF number, the better the protection.
The International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica says in order to figure out how long the SPF will work, multiply the SPF by the time it takes your skin to burn without a sunscreen — so if it takes your skin five minutes to burn and you’re using an SPF 30, you can have up to 150 minutes safely in the sun.
LIQUIDS, CREAMS AND SERUMS
BB, CC, even DD, creams often have SPF in them, and you can find most with a minimum SPF 30. These ‘alphabet creams’ are excellent as a primer or as a replacement for your foundation, however SPF is also included in many liquid foundations on the market. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can get them from SPF 15 to 50-plus. If you’re one of the many people that

BENEFITS OF SUNSAFE MAKEUP this season doesn’t have to mean compromising on beauty
can’t get by without the hydrating, repairing and other benefits of facial serums, more and more companies are now adding SPF to them as well.
POWDERS
As with liquid foundations, powder foundations with added SPF can also be found though they’re less common. Pressed powder, loose and mineral powder — you name it, you can save face (literally) with it. There is also blush and bronzer available for an all-protected glow.
LIPSTICKS
Yes, even that gorgeous shade of red that makes your lips look full and luscious can protect them from the sun. While wearing sunscreen in lipbalm form is great for UV protection, it can get a little boring without colour. Both tinted balms and proper lipsticks are available with SPF generally from 15 to 30.

T
he Christmas period can be a stressful time for most families. What to serve? What gifts are needed? Where will we spend Christmas day? Despite the mad rush, it all comes together in the end. Whether you are a planner or a last-minute Christmas organiser, one thing you should really handle now is arrangements for the children over Christmas. It is not uncommon in the months,
and even days, leading up to Christmas for us to receive frantic calls from clients where the other parent has changed the arrangements for Christmas without consulting them. Sometimes extended family members who haven’t been seen for years can give rise to a change of plan to the already agreed Christmas arrangements and the other party will not agree to alter the changeover time. Other times, one party simply refuses
to permit the other party to see his/her children for some reason that is not communicated. Where parties have only recently separated, they may not have turned their minds to when the children will spend time with the other parent at Christmas. The most important rule to remember when it comes to Christmas arrangements is your children’s interests are the priority, not the parents’ interests. Children cherish memories of time with their parents, they do not hold on to memories of whether they spent one or two more hours with one parent. Seeing both parents on Christmas Day or on separate days is often never remembered. It is the memories of how you embrace the holiday period with your children that can last a lifetime. If you do not have arrangements in place for the children for the Christmas period, we suggest you engage an experienced family law solicitor without delay to help you negotiate arrangements, arrange Family Dispute Resolution or prepare an application to the Court.

EMBRACE THE INSANITY BY LISA MACHIN, STYLE COLUMNIST
D
eck the halls with gum leaves, hang pine cones from the rafters. Take away the stress, bring back loads of laughter! Dear readers it is almost that time of the year again. Christmas is on our doorstep. And while I am an advocate of the silly season, it also looms for many of us
on the horizon as a time of high stress and anxiety. First of all, it’s usually a lot of people under one roof. Who are not normally under said roof all together. That’s an instant recipe to test our nerves, tolerance and dispositions. Why does your uncle chew that loudly? Do your sister’s children have to
shoot water guns in the hallway? Did there really have to be three versions of the same salad in a fridge already short on space? It’s a testing time to say the least. But when you stop to think about it, it’s actually a privilege to be driven mad by your loved ones. And it’s a privilege we may not always be lucky enough to have. So, this Christmas I challenge you to find your zen. Spike the punch, go for a walk around the block every hour, play your favourite song in the car before you walk through the front door into all that madness…. do whatever you have to do to make sure you yourself are great company. Because, at the end of the day, Christmas is all about cramming all the people we love into one fabulous pressure cooker of chaos, food, stories, love and drama. Happy Christmas everyone. This will be my last column for Style Magazine, and it’s been a real pleasure writing for you over the past year. Have a fantastic break and enjoy the many future editions of Style Magazine to come! My best, Lisa.

SURVIVING CHRISTMAS IN GOOD HEALTH BY ELSPETH HASWELL-SMITH, STYLE COLUMNIST
C
hristmas can be daunting for many people, here are some great ideas to keep in mind during the silly season. Connection: Christmas can be a lonely
time for many people. Whether they have lost loved ones (or do not have good communication with loved ones) it is important we think of those around us.
Find out if anyone in your circle is spending Christmas alone and extend an invitation to celebrate together. Or consider volunteering at a charity, homeless shelter or nursing home on Christmas Day. Lets look out for each other during the festive season and remember connection is more important than the gifts we buy. Finances: Stick to a budget, buy local and do not overspend, sometimes the simplest ideas make the best gifts. Weight Gain: According to Nutrition Australia we gain on average .8 to 1.5kg over the Christmas period. Prevent weight gain by taking some simple mindful steps. Exercise regularly and avoid over-consuming food and alcohol. Think about eating a rainbow and focus more on fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables than pre-packaged chips and bakery treats. Sleep: The Christmas season can influence our sleeping patterns and schedules with catch-ups and Christmas parties. Keep in mind the importance of a good sleep routine and avoid late nights of drinking. This will reduce stress and encourage you to unwind and relax. Enjoy yourself this Christmas season.
Heavy or painful periods? You don’t have to put up with it.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT SOLAR PANELS CAN TAKE A HUGE BITE OUT OF YOUR ELECTRICITY BILLS
D
id you know that heating up water for bathing and cleaning the dishes accounts for up to 30 per cent of the average household’s total energy consumption? This is where solar energy may just be the answer to combating those horror electricity bills. What is solar hot water and how does it work? In basic terms, solar hot water takes heat from the sun to provide hot water throughout your home. Solar hot water systems use roof-mounted solar collectors to absorb energy from the sun to heat water which then flows to the storage tank. Benefits of Solar Hot Water By using the sun’s energy to heat water: ● The average household can reduce its annual hot water costs by 85 per cent
(when compared to a traditional electric system) ● Depending on the climate in which you choose to build your home, solar hot water systems can provide up to 90 per cent of your hot water for free ● Reduced energy consumption results in fewer greenhouse gases produced. What are solar PV systems? A solar photovoltaic (PV) system is a system comprised of one or more solar panels combined with an inverter that converts sunlight into electricity. Most Australian homes are connected to the electricity grid, which uses alternating current (AC), while the electricity generated by solar panels uses direct current (DC). From this, an inverter is used to transform the DC electricity into AC electricity which is then suitable for ordinary household needs. It should also

be noted that houses with solar systems use solar power first before sourcing electricity from the grid. The average daily production of a solar PV system The power output of a solar PV system depends on its efficiency, size and location, but the typical Australian household uses around 18-kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per day. This means that a 1-2 kW system could displace 25-40 per cent of your average electricity bill. A quality solar power system ensures that you are on your way to cutting costs on your electricity bill, all the while improving your green footprint. – Information sourced from Dixon Homes

CHRISTMAS CAN WEIGH HEAVY DON’T LET OBESITY BECOME A PART OF YOUR LIFESTYLE
W
ith Christmas fast approaching, our minds turn to family, friends and the bounties of Christmas family lunches and dinners. For some, the ‘season of giving’ weighs heavy as they notice extra kilos piling onto the already burdensome accumulation they have gained over the years – and that stubbornly will not shift. An excess of body fat is called obesity. Obesity is considered one of the biggest healthcare issues facing our nation today and it affects more than a person’s self-esteem, it is linked to everything from coronary heart disease, fertility problems, diabetes, joint problems and cancer. For those who feel there is no end to
their battle to lose weight – local surgeon, Dr Evan Willingham says weight-loss surgery provides a safe treatment option that offers a better quality of life, improvement or cure from comorbidities and a longer life expectancy; and it is more successful than dieting in the long-term. Dr Willingham has a strong interest in bariatric surgery and is an advocate for the transformative effect weight-loss surgery can have on his patient's life. "Weight-loss surgery is safe and effective and there are a number of options available; however, sleeve gastrectomy is the most common operation performed for obesity in Australia. "Patients can expect to lose about 70
per cent of excess weight (weight above normal range) in the first year and 60 per cent after five years and with the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, which is considered the "Gold Standard" in weight loss surgery, patients may lose 77 per cent excess weight after one year and 69 per cent after five years," he said. Dr Willingham says there are other options available depending on the goals of the patient but recommends that anyone interested in undergoing bariatric (weight-loss) surgery first talks to their General Practitioner to see if they are a suitable candidate. THE ULTIMATE OFFICE PARTY SURVIVAL GUIDE KEEP THE CONGA LINE PG RATED
W
hether your bosses are hosting a Xmas party, a NYE party, an EOFY party, or any other party involving acronyms or abbreviations, one thing is for sure: They want you to behave yourself. As an employee, the opportunity to cut loose and enjoy the evening at the boss’ expense can prove fatal, if not approached with caution. Here are some tips and tricks to survive the office party with your hard–won reputation and respect intact: Watch It — Perhaps the only real tip, is to watch your alcohol intake. Feeling jolly and slightly pink around the ears is fine, but slurring, falling and being rude, is not. Always remember you’re still ‘at work’ while attending an office party and your managers will notice any bad behaviour on your part. Do you want this party to be remembered when you’re considered for a promotion?
Etiquette — Depending on the venue and tone of the party, you will be expected to observe certain norms of behaviour. Your employer would (hopefully) have kept staff in mind when booking the venue and setting the tone for the party. Whether or not, act appropriately. Not knowing which fork to use, is not the end of the world. Laughing at a colleague’s joke is encouraged, but talking during the speeches, is not. Always mind your manners. Don’t Get Too Cosy — The fact that this is a party, does not negate all the normal ethics and values of the company (or society, for that matter). Getting too cosy with your co–workers, like becoming a bit too ‘handsy’ or overstepping the line of what’s acceptable and what’s personal, can lead to terrible embarrassment or even disciplinary action. “I was drunk” is no excuse.

WHEN DROUGHT VISITS FINDING SOLUTIONS THE WORLD OVER
When governments keep their citizens informed, great things can happen very year the topic of water scarcity becomes more pressing, with an estimated one–in–three people living in countries facing a chronic nationwide water crisis. What this statistic fails to show, however, is the number of people facing water restrictions in dry, heavily populated regions despite not undergoing a water crisis nationally. One such country, is Australia. Large parts of Australia regularly suffer from severe drought, despite Australia not being a water–poor country. The recent drought is not the first time Australia has had to endure water scarcity and, although it will not be the last time, Australians have fantastic ways of tackling water shortages. These self–taught lessons, coupled with lessons learned through analysing
water–poor countries, can make all the difference come the next drought. During its worst drought in living memory, when water levels dropped to an all–time low of 26 per cent, Melbourne installed electronic billboards along highways to display current reservoir levels, which created a sense of urgency in the community. A similar situation arose in Cape Town, South Africa, recently, when limited water storage capacity, coupled with a severe and prolonged drought affecting the majority of the country, proved near–fatal to the Mother City. The local government imposed strict water restrictions and broadcast a doomsday countdown to ‘Day Zero’ (the day the city would run out of water). Residents responded swiftly, leading to Day Zero being pushed back to July 2019 or (possibly) indefinitely.

Although the water crisis is far from over for its residents, Cape Town (like Melbourne) stands as testament to what can be accomplished when goverments keep citizens informed. Other methods implemented by water–poor countries, include Jordan’s temporary elimination of import tariffs on its most water–intensive crops, like bananas, with the goal to reduce the amount of fresh water consumed by agriculture. Namibia, home to the Namib Desert (which fetches around 10 millimetres of rain annually), has become a world leader in wastewater management and its citizens have been drinking recycled water since the ‘60s. There is no one–size–fits–all solution, but taking a leaf from our own and other books, will make planning for the future easier.

THE DARKER SIDE OF HOSPITALITY BY NIVARD NELSON, STYLE COLUMNIST
W
age theft is a growing area of concern in the hospitality industry. Six years ago, my wages were stolen. I worked for $15 an hour with no penalty rates in a local restaurant. I can still smell the sweat and food scraps stuck to my clothes, hear the screaming from the hot kitchen and feel the sinking disappointment when opening my weekly envelope of cash, poorly
hidden beneath the register. "They must have made a mistake," I thought at first. But it was no mistake. My bosses were cordially duplicitous. They offered staff free pizza, as if this compensated more than halving our weekend wages. They were mostly friendly and light-hearted, as if this excused forgoing breaks and superannuation. Their image as benevolent "regular
mums and dads" slowly crumbled as job security, trying conditions and poor recompense left a sour taste in my mouth. Finally, the public is seeing this darker side of hospitality. Recent wage theft allegations against popular Melbourne eateries Barry, Vue de Monde, Chin Chin and the Degani chain, as well as celebrity chefs George Calombaris and Darren Purchese, have leant high-profile names to a previously hidden problem. And these businesses aren’t merely "bad apples" — according to the Fair Work Ombudsman, 48 per cent of Australian hospitality businesses do not comply with industrial laws. How did businesses get away with it for so long? Blood ties and friendships between employers and employees pacify agitation. But I think something culturally specific is also at play. Anyone who has worked in hospitality knows that the hours are long and the working conditions tough. Loyalty is bought with the camaraderie of the kitchen and front of house and a couple of free beers after knock-off, not big pay packets.

WITH LOVE, ALL OF US BY MATT GREGG, LOADS OF LOVE
W
hile Christmas ought to be a time of celebration and joy, many people are simply unable to put food on the table. All around Australia there are people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from. The 2018 Food Hunger Report shows that, in the last 12 months, more than four million Australians (about 18 per cent of the population) have been in a situation where they have run out of food and have been unable to buy more. Sadly, for some in our community,
MAKING CHRISTMAS A MERRY TIME FOR ALL Christmas is less about celebration and more about struggle,. That’s where the Loads of Love appeal steps in. The appeal is all about ‘sharing the love’ and helping our neighbours. The appeal calls the community to action by asking people, families, workplaces and small communities (like schools) to donate non–perishable food items that can be shared with households requiring support. The Loads of Love appeal operates from Bundaberg to the NSW border and
from Brisbane to the Western Downs. There are seven distinct areas of operation, each with it’s own local charity working in partnership with the Loads of Love appeal to organise, collect and distribute the donated items. In Toowoomba, collection and distribution is coordinated by Lifeline Darling Downs and South West Queensland. There are now more than 100 official collection points across southern Queensland — with over 30 in Toowoomba alone, including Lifeline and Harvey Norman stores, Heritage Bank branches, The Chronicle, civic organisations, charities, churches, and many more. Since the appeal began in 2009 we have collected over 48,000 kilograms of items with 20,000 kilograms being donated in 2017 alone. Collection for 2018 has only just begun and we expect significant donations from communities this year, aiming to collect 20,000 kilograms of food across southern Queensland. Collection runs from Thursday, November 1 to Thursday, December 20. For more information, to stay up to date with the running tally, or to donate online, visit www.loadsoflove.org.au

FEAR FACTOR A
YOU’RE FREAKING ME OUT MAN!
merican president Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" but, when it comes to things that freak us out, unfortunately F.D.R.’s calming words offer little consolation. Phobias are a very real condition for most humans – and there’s a veritable plethora of paranoia out there that will get the heart pounding and bring on the cold sweats. A fear of snakes (Ophidiophobia), spiders (Arachnophobia) or speaking in public (Glossophobia) consistently feature in all-time global dreads – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Irrational or otherwise, we’ve all got our own quirks and terrors and while we appreciate the following list features most genuine fears for some, here are a few recognised phobias that definitely take things to the next level: ■ Globophobia – fear of balloons (anyone who has had 20 of them systematically explode while preparing for Timmy’s fifth birthday party will be nodding in twitchy agreement) ■ Ancraophobia – fear of wind or
drafts (if you suffer from this, Toowoomba, Chicago or any cliff buff may not be the best place to call home) ■ Batrachophobia – fear of frogs and other amphibians (Toad-ly agree) ■ Cherophobia – fear of happiness (Too many people seem to have this these days) ■ Gephyrophobia – fear of bridges (suggesting to ‘build a bridge and get over it’ may not be the best advice) ■ Phagophobia – fear of swallowing (gulp!) ■ Koumpounophobia – fear of buttons (possibly falsely started and disseminated by the zipper industry) ■ Nomophobia – fear of being out of mobile phone contact (one for our Millennials) ■ Pogonophobia – fear of beards (the ultimate in shear terror) ■ Spectrophobia or Catoptrophobia – fear of mirrors (we should reflect on that) ■ Halitophobia – fear of bad breath (Can’t say we actually fear it, but most everyone will agree that we can certainly do without it).

UNLEASH THE BEAST A
uribus teneo lupum: this ancient proverb which means “I grasp a wolf by the ears” eloquently describes a conundrum faced by many. Put simply, it’s a proverb that highlights the fact sometimes there are no perfect solutions. In the world of SUVs, often you sacrifice performance for the benefits of a high-rider. Not in the case of Volkswagen’s Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition. For those who want more than elegance from a standard Tiguan, the Wolfsburg Edition offers some gritted teeth aggression. Boasting black exterior treatments
like 20-inch glossy Suzuka alloys, roof rails, window surrounds, upper radiator grille and lower strap, rear bumper strips as well as a rear spoiler, it looks muscular and primed to pounce. The upgrades aren’t restricted to the exterior. Inside there is a nine-speaker Dynaudio sound system with the R-Line interior package that incorporates Vienna leather trim, flat-bottom steering wheel, digital instruments with a 12.3-inch display, advanced head-up display as well as smartphone mirroring apps Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the 9.2-inch colour touchscreen. Under the bonnet is a four-cylinder

turbocharged engine partnered to a seven-speed automatic transmission which pushes power to all four-wheels. It’s a lithe performer with impressive punch under your right foot. The Wolfsburg edition doesn’t get any extra mumbo, but it’s not required. Boasting car-like performance with impressive acceleration and cornering ability, it’s a cracking engine offering prestige-like driveability. Sport mode gives the GTI experience with stiffer suspension, weightier steering and the engine getting revvier. Consider this an Audi Q5 without the badge….......you’ll be damned if you don’t.
The Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition Meet the special Tiguan Wolfsburg Edition. THE NUTCRACKER AND THE FOUR REALMS Release: Out now Genre: Family/Fantasy Cast: Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Morgan Freeman
A
fun journey through extravagant, syrupy realms, the latest Disney movie is an ideal Christmas lark. Taking a trend of more recent times in books and movies, Disney has taken a classic and retold it — in this case, without the massive amounts of ballet as in Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker or the dark, sombre undertones of the original story The Nutcracker and The Mouse King. However, there are elements of both originals in the film, and the tale remains just as enchanting and extravagant. The film score borrows from
Tchaikovsky’s work, as does the inclusion of some dance sequences featuring ballet star Misty Copeland. One pleasing modern addition is the strong female main character, Clara, who is a physics-loving and smart teen mourning the recent loss of her mother. Clara’s mother left gifts for each of her children to be given out on Christmas Eve, and Clara’s is a locked silver egg created by her godfather Drosselmeyer (Morgan Freeman). In her search for the egg’s key, Clara ends up in the Four Realms where she must bring peace to the war-torn land. We meet Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, ruler of the Land of Sweets, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger, tyrannical ruler of the Land of Amusements, Eugenio Derbez as Hawthorne, ruler of the Land of
Flowers, and Richard E Grant as Shiver, ruler of the Land of Snowflakes — as well as mice and a Nutcracker, of course. Costumes, sets and effects are as lavishly over-the-top as one would expect from a Nutcracker tale, and allow more forgiveness for plot flaws. Overall, The Nutcracker and The Four Realms is a delightful film for the entire family to enjoy.

BOOK REVIEWS BY JESSICA KRAMER
Who knew Marshall from How I Met Your Mother could write novels? Obviously, this isn’t really Marshall but rather the actor who played the character, Jason Segel. Alongside published author Kirsten Miller, the first book in this new trilogy was published by the duo in October last year. While there have been a few comparisons between this OtherWorld series and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (or the movie, for that matter), I found the only true similarity being that both stories deal with virtual reality/gaming. And for those who found the gaming references too heavy in Ready Player One, this trilogy will be perfect. The prequel to OtherEarth follows 18-year-old Simon in his mission to rescue best friend Kat from OtherWorld — a virtual reality game created by ‘The Company’. The problem is, OtherWorld is so much more than a game, and has some pretty big bugs with some of its technology...meaning people can die in real life when their avatar dies in the game. Still following? In OtherEarth, the stakes are even higher as Simon and his friends try to rescue the people still held captive by The Company while being hunted for knowing too much. OtherEarth begins at full-pace and doesn’t let up, and the characters are quite well-written. There is enough background and explanations to allow a reader to begin with OtherEarth, however I recommend reading OtherWorld first for better understanding.
BY MAJOR VICTOR CORNWALL AND MAJOR ST JOHN TREVELYAN
An interesting blend of historical fiction and humour, this memoir is not for the faint-hearted or very easily offended. If you’re not easily offended and have a particular sense of humour, however, you are in for a treat. Scoundrels is marketed as being the historically accurate and true, jaw-dropped memoirs of spies Major Cornwall and Major Trevelyan, who were part of the infamous gentlemen’s club of London in the mid 20th century. The banter and sniping between the two majors in their letters after each chapter is delightful and brings in a different, often less crass, type of humour. If the reader is willing to let go of some political-correctness while reading this volume, however, the chapters are riotously hilarious. All in all, Scoundrels is an ideal read for a casual Sunday afternoon or when waiting in the doctors’ surgery — though watch out in this setting, as you may find yourself laughing aloud quite vigorously. Scoundrels by Major Victor Cornwall and Major St John Trevelyan is available now. This reviewer was provided with a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
OtherEarth by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller is available from October 30. This writer received an Advance Reading Copy in exchange for an honest review.

This meal is a true comfort dish all year round. Generous slices of bread topped with basil pesto, sautĂŠed mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, grilled haloumi, avocado and a balsamic glaze, it brings joy from the inside out while remaining light enough to enjoy even on the hottest summer days. The balsamic glaze is not so strong as to drown out the other flavours in this dish, with the roasted tomatoes bringing a burst of fresh sweetness.

This colourful and fresh dish is certainly a celebration in your mouth. Two thick slices of flavoursome, perfectly cooked French toast are topped with creamy ripe banana, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, flakes of coconut and roasted pistachios. If this wasn’t enough already, the dish is topped with cinnamon cream and drizzled with mixed berry compote or Nutella sauce. The dish is perfectly balanced between sweet and tart bursts, with the cinnamon cutting through any richness for a smooth finish.

SKIPPING TOWN BY JEFF BROWN
n September we spent three weeks in the UK visiting family — a few days in London, Wales and Royal Wootton Bassett, before heading off to southern Germany for two weeks. Not far south of Royal Wootton Bassett, is one of our favourite villages — Avebury — with its ancient stone circle connected to Stonehenge (not far away), a classic English country pub called the Red Lion, and a recently refurbished Tudor manor house that was featured in a documentary hosted by Penelope Keith (To the Manor Born). This was high on our must–see list; a Tudor manor house where you are actually encouraged to lie on the four–poster bed, dress in Tudor outfits, and sit on the oak chairs. We also discovered Lacock (another fascinating medieval village) nearby.
It too has a manor house, crooked–walled pubs, half–timbered houses...and thousands of tourists. Lacock’s church featured in a Harry Potter film and the village centre (owned by the National Trust) was used as a set for Pride and Prejudice and Downton Abbey. On the day we first visited Lacock, signs advertised that filming for the Downton Abbey movie would be happening the following week. We made sure to be back for that, joining in with the like–minded, camera–wielding throng. I managed to ‘photobomb’ a snap taken by the Daily Mail of Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery) as she was waiting for her scene and, all I can say, is that film–making is a tiring business. Our favourite discovery in Germany
was Füssen, a medieval village right on Bavaria’s southern border with Austria. We arrived late on a drizzly afternoon, and didn’t get to see the Alps until the next day when the clouds cleared and showed the high peaks towering over us with a fresh layer of snow. Under a brilliant blue sky, we toured the enigmatic Neuschwanstein Castle — the fairytale inspiration for Disney’s creation. The views from the castle are absolutely stunning, with Alpsee Lake shimmering in shades of teal and aqua. Climbing further up the mountain overlooking Neuschwanstein, we crossed a 90–metre–deep gorge on Marion’s Bridge. All this was like being in a fairytale and it makes you hungry to experience more.

YEPPOON: UNPLANNED PERFECTION
BY BROOKE GARDNER
W
hen I think of holiday destinations, I can’t say Rockhampton and Yeppoon are what immediately springs to mind. However, my partner was stationed there for work so my three–year–old and I made the 8–hour drive. I am surprised to admit, but it was an amazing holiday. We booked a beautiful apartment at the top of Yeppoon’s main beach, with views from every window. Spending the morning on the balcony, drinking coffee and overlooking the ocean, was the best way to start the day. Walking directly across the road to the stunning beach, my son was living his best life — running between the beaches and the free, council–run Keppel Kracken Water Park (situated directly on the boardwalk, conveniently
opposite lovely coffee shops). Anyone who has vacationed with an active three–year–old knows that wearing them out, while still having a great vacation yourself, is often unachievable — but Yeppoon’s beach–fronts fit the bill. Across town (walking distance if you’re keen, or a short drive if you’re like me) is the man–made lagoon facility, complete with water slides, trampolines and plenty of kid–friendly entertainment. Yeppoon also offers a wide range of great restaurants and cafes. Making short day trips from our base in Yeppoon, we visited the Rockhampton Zoo (only a 35–minute drive away). This zoo is surprising; it’s small enough to see everything in half a day but features such a wide variety of
animals, you are not left disappointed. Backing onto the zoo, is the Rockhampton Botanical Gardens, surrounded by a large lake and including a waterfall in the Japanese garden — yet again Rockhampton surprised us with its beauty. Zilze Beach, Emu Park — a never–ending list of secluded, quiet and picturesque beaches — are perfect for family picnics. We were never at a loss for things to do. I may not have purposely chosen our holiday destination this year, but our week in Yeppoon was surprisingly perfect. Filled with beautiful surrounds, lovely locals, amazing food and cute little cafes, I urge you to make the drive — you might be surprised too.

UNIQUE, FUN, & FOREVER
PHOTOS: LOREN HAYNE, TALL TIMBER STUDIO
O
n an overcast October day at the Jimbour homestead, John McLean Bennett and Elisha Hulme tied the knot after four and a half years together. They exchanged vows in the homestead’s beautiful gardens before retiring to the hangar for their reception. Elisha said she did not take John’s last name, as the two of them feel it is an outdated practice. The pair had met online through RSVP.com.au and were joined on their first date by a special guest. “I told John to bring his dog, Dog, along and we ended up going to a dog park for our date,” Elisha remembered. “I’m pretty sure Dog (which is short for Dougald Oscar Geronimo) is the world’s best wingman,” John joked. Elisha said she knew John was the one, because he is supportive and encouraging of everything she does.
THE TALE OF JOHN AND ELISHA “He could see potential in me where I couldn’t; I knew he was the one because he believed in me so strongly,” she said, adding that they share the same twisted sense of humour. For John, knowing he wanted to marry Elisha happened without him really noticing. “It was so incremental and natural, that no one point in time defines it,” he said, but added that it was at the Carnival of Flowers during a set of Ballpark Music that they first declared their love for each other. John proposed to Elisha at the top of the Empire State Building in New York City, USA — which happens to be Elisha’s favourite city. The wedding day was all about fun, from the humour in their vows to the style of photos they chose to capture their day in. “An impromptu decision to take a
photo standing on the bonnet of the Landrover, with Elisha holding an over–sized balloon, really captured the vibe,” John said. The decorations followed a country theme, with floral arrangements made up of gum leaves and soft pinks and greys. “Jimbour Homestead is a stunning venue, so there really isn’t much to do to make it any better,” Elisha said. They spent their honeymoon in an over–water bungalow at the Coconut Island Resort in Samoa, and said they hope to expand their family and home in the years to come.

DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED A FESTIVE SEASON HEALTH CHECK? BY CREATE FINANCIAL SOLUTIONS
P
ersonal finances are typically top of mind for people during the festive season. Christmas is often linked to a rise in household debt and "spend less, save more" is usually among the top three resolutions made (and broken) each year. Business owners are often guilty of wearing too many hats and trying to ‘do it all’. Sadly, the consequences of getting your financial obligations wrong can be devastating. I have seen various ‘mistakes’ throughout the year that have put clients and their businesses in
crisis. Business owners generally don’t reflect on their business’s performance or financial health until the end of the financial year – to their detriment. Saving a financial health check until May or June leaves little time to implement any required changes to pricing, client base, services, packages or spending habits. Analysing all aspects of your business over the holiday period may reveal that a product or service is, in fact, losing you money.
OWN YOUR TOMORROW
Think like your customers The best way to review your business is take yourself out of the business and think like your customer. What do they want? What are they asking for? What are their problems that you are solving? Then, compare this to what you are actually offering. Christmas is a great time to review this as things tend to slow down and you can really work on your business, rather than in your business. Running a financially healthy business takes time and planning. Becoming profitable rarely happens due to luck, accident or magic. The Christmas cash flow crunch You may be taking a break over the holidays, but unfortunately bills will keep rolling in. You should already be planning January and February work now. Having clients lined up, specials advertised and work flow planned two months in advance ensures your cash flow is regular. You can then schedule jobs, time and rosters, manage your diary more effectively and reduce Christmas stress. Lastly, having a trusted financial adviser can have immeasurable benefits for your business!
No matter what your current situation, Create Financial Solutions can work with you and your family to plan a great future and prepare for any uncertainties life may throw at you. FLYING SOLO
Five tips for handling the Christmas period as a newly separated parent BY HILLARY MCVEIGH, BEST WILSON BUCKLEY FAMILY LAW
o, while many families are making lists (and checking them twice), cementing Christmas party plans, and finding that elusive perfect outfit, separated parents also have the worry of "what are we doing with the kids?". When the holidays hit, it is easy for a newly separated parent to be caught up in seasonal angst and new unchartered territory, so here are five tips for navigating your first Christmas solo. Put the kids first and compromise Many parents immediately think that the fairest way to manage Christmas Day is to split it down the middle (i.e. changeover at midday at a halfway point). However, when it comes to holiday scheduling and how time is shared between households, don’t focus on what’s fair between you and your ex-partner but what works best for the kids. Whilst at the outset this may appear to be in the best interests of the children, it is important to remember that what may feel fair for Mum and Dad, may not be best for kids. Consider alternating the arrangements each year, where one parent enjoys the majority of Christmas Day and the other parent then Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. Whilst it may be hard for the parent who is solo on Christmas Day that particular year,
why not use the opportunity to create a second Christmas Day celebration on another day. You don’t want to spend the day rushing from one event to another, or subjecting your kids to potentially hostile changeovers. Cement your plans early Don’t wait until the week before Christmas to raise arrangements with your ex-partner. Have discussions as far in advance as possible so that both parents and children know what lies ahead. Do not add further stress by trying to sort it out last minute as this will likely heighten tensions. Hopefully some sensible discussions may lead to an agreement being reached about this day. Communicate with your kids Once an agreement has been reached, communicate these with the children in order to show a united front and reduce any worry they may have about splitting their time between parents on Christmas. Make it a competition free zone – it’s tempting to overcompensate or show off when it comes to the day’s festivities and the kids’ presents. Make new traditions Along with how events will be scheduled, discuss with your kids about
what the holidays will look like – what will be different and what will stay the same. Brainstorm which traditions they would like to keep and where the family can embrace new ones. If Christmas Day isn’t going to be at your place, arrange a Christmas Eve party or a Boxing Day adventure. If your children are still in early years, decide where Santa’s stop will be. Explain how Santa and his reindeers only have time to visit one house. It’s usually best to choose their primary home, or wherever they’ll be waking up on Christmas morning. If it isn’t your place then either drop the presents off in advance or contribute costs to the other parent. Schedule in your own plans It’s your Christmas too. If you will not get the chance to see your children on Christmas Day, schedule in arrangements with your own family and friends. So grab your egg nog, toast your ex, and wish them well. Don’t sweat the small stuff and no matter where your kids will be spending Christmas Day – make sure they know you’re happy and your celebrations with them will be next holiday. Then they can have the Christmas they deserve.

PISCES
FEB 19 — MAR 20
IT’S IN THE STARS SAGITTARIUS NOV 22 — DEC 21
What to buy a Sagittarian? Everything and more, but personalised items are especially valued as it shows that thought was put into the gift and not just grabbed off the shelves of a discount store. You have a love of family and animals so think about spoiling yourself with a gorgeous family photo shoot, or buying a cute rhinestone collar for your pet.
CAPRICORN
DEC 22 — JAN 19
Goats love Christmas; it is the time of year when you can enjoy the family and spend time doing what you love. If buying gifts for a Capricorn, look towards a DIY idea or a new hobby to invest their time in. December brings your family together which is really what it is all about.
AQUARIUS
JAN 20 — FEB 18
Aquarians are known to be the most fun–loving sign of the Zodiac and nothing would please them more this Christmas than tickling their funny bone. Their sense of humour is contagious and they love exercise — perhaps a gym membership will tick their box this year.
Pisces are the dreamers of the Zodiac; they are quite comfortable keeping themselves company at home, only venturing out to grab the odd treat or two. If you have a Pisces in your life, think gifts along the lines of home furnishings, art or books on their favourite topic.
ARIES
MAR 21 — APR 19
It is sometimes hard to work out what would make a great gift for an Aries as they are changeable. While they may want to travel the world one week, they are just as likely to decide last–minute to visit a health retreat. Err on the side of caution — you cannot go wrong with gift vouchers or a spa treatment.
TAURUS
APR 20 — MAY 20
If there is one gift that will win a Taurus over, it would be something to do with the kitchen. They love to cook, experimenting with flavours and seasoning. You cannot go wrong if you tap into their favourite food or drink — they love a good red and great cheese!
GEMINI
MAY 21 — JUN 20
Well, this is one person who will not be difficult to buy for. Geminis love to spend their time with friends and experiencing the latest movie releases, so a golden pass to the cinema would be ideal.
CANCER
JUN 21 — JUL 22
A Cancer looks forward to Christmas — it must be all the parties that magically happen around them! The ideal present for Cancer would be
either a ticket to a major musical event, and don’t forget the champagne for the limo on the way there.
LEO
JUL 23 — AUG 22
Leos love Christmas time but are not great at keeping gifts a secret. If buying for Leos, remember they can never have enough perfumes, soap or little tokens of your affection. If you really want to impress a Leo, show them they are the centre of your world.
VIRGO
AUG 23 — SEPT 22
Virgo, did you imagine how much your life would change in one year? It is now more about family than ever and it is the greatest time to celebrate — spend the day showing your people how much they mean to you. If you need a gift for Virgo, go with a gift that will stand the test of time.
LIBRA
SEPT 23 — OCT 22
Librans are the social conscience of the Zodiac. As you can see by their scales of justice, they have strong beliefs both in personal and political arenas and will fight tooth and nail to defend injustice. A good gift idea could be donating to a wildlife foundation on their behalf. And, you cannot go wrong with a book on someone who stood tall, fought for their beliefs and won out in the end.
SCORPIO
OCT 23 — NOV 21
Pop! There go the champagne corks! Christmas gifts for Scorpios are easy; they love new experiences, so think about hot air ballooning, bungee jumping or white–water rafting experiences. If all else fails, think outside the box.
