“Reflecting on resilence...” In the most trying of years, Master Builders Victoria’s Excellence in Housing Awards for 2020 not only honours the highest achievers of our industry but also represents a time to reflect on the resilience of Master Builders across Victoria. Sadly, we couldn’t all gather at Crown Palladium to celebrate the year with our peers — these are awards with a difference. For the first time they’ve been announced online, and I congratulate all who have been involved to innovate and make this possible, together with our members that have embraced this change. Despite the success of this approach, let’s hope we’re all together in person again in the near future. A Master Builder embodies quality in building, and the homes nominated for this year’s awards are true representatives of that ideal. In the middle of such difficult times, it is worth reflecting on the skills that are on display every day in our industry. We should all be proud of this work and celebrate it. Congratulations to all individuals and companies who’ve been nominated for awards, your participation and enthusiasm to nominate and showcase makes this concept possible. The quality of nominations is worthy of many winners in each category, but of course there can only be one. We formally congratulate CJ Henderson Builders for being awarded the Residential Master Builder of the Year for their Jan Juc project. Their workmanship on this project was outstanding and managed to blend the old and new in a seamless fashion to create a home that was a standout in a brilliant field.

We also recognise Michael Domanjko from Milara Building & Development who has been awarded the Young Builder of the Year. Michael’s journey from carpenter in the family business, to further education and experience in the building and construction industry and back to leading Milara Building & Development is a model story. Michael’s work stamps him as a future leader in our industry. On behalf of Master Builders Victoria and our members, I congratulate all winners and nominees. “A credit to everyone involved...” 2020 was a year we’ll never forget, and while that’s primarily for terrible reasons, the work of our members continued to be of the highest quality with so many outstanding projects created over the past twelve months. That the majority of the building and construction industry remained safe and open through the range of lockdowns, albeit in a reduced form for some time, is a credit to everyone involved. Our whole industry not only took on new advice, protocols and ways to work, our members embraced them and did not allow it to affect the quality of work that Master Builders are renowned for. I echo our President’s sentiments in commending all the work that has been showcased through the Awards. This year the Master Builders Victoria Excellence in Housing Awards are quite different, and it’s important to give some background on how we adapted to ensure we could present this COVIDSafe version of our Awards. Due to the restrictions throughout 2020, the Regional Building Awards were not able to go ahead, so instead the choice was given to regional members to transfer their submission into the 2020 Master Builders Victoria Excellence in Housing Awards, or transfer into the 2021 Master Builders Victoria Regional Building Awards. The nominations and winners from regional areas that are featured in this magazine refer to those that took up the former. For the first time, judging was completed online and in accordance with the Victorian Building Authority’s Remote Video Inspection Guidelines, that judging occurring later in the year than usual. This has contributed to the Master Builders Victoria Excellence in Housing Awards being announced

online in January and February 2021, rather than the traditional October slot. Regardless, we hope that some time in the near future we’ll be able to get together so that we can honour our peers and meet with friends and colleagues in person from around Victoria. All of this does not take anything away from the winners and nominees of 2020, though. I take this opportunity to congratulate all of those winners and nominees, together with all our wonderful members who kept our industry safe and open in 2020, and further enhanced the reputation of what a Master Builder is capable of creating. FRANK PAVAN Chief Judge Fellow of Engineers Australia (NPER) Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building Member of the Building Designers Association of Victoria, Member of Master Builders Victoria Member of Green Building Council of Australia member of the Australian Society of Building Consultants VCAT building expert Frank Pavan is Managing Director of Pavan Consultants, a Melbourne based, multi-disciplined firm of project managers, building designers, engineers and interior designers. Frank is a civil/structural engineer with post-graduate qualifications in building design, project management and commercial and domestic estimating. He has worked in many and varied industries including mining, petro-chemical, commercial, retail, educational, defence, industrial, judicial, local, state and federal governments including multi-unit developments. Frank has 38 years experience in the building and construction industry and has worked in Saudi Arabia, Italy and in many Australian capital and regional cities. Pavan Consultants has won three project management awards in 2014 and 2017, that latest being a National Award in project management. The firm also won three design awards in 2011. He has worked on projects valued up to $30Million. Frank is the immediate past President of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Building and is an on-going industry representative with the Victorian Building Authority.

Sustainable Building Advisor Master Builders Victoria PhD in Ecology and land management, Masters of Environmental Science Certified Passive House Consultant. Philip has been employed as the Sustainable Building Advisor at Master Builders Victoria for the past 16 years and on building and construction related projects and research for the last 18 years. Phil’s extensive experience in education and training has informed the development of nationally recognised sustainable construction training programs and the national roll out of the accredited Master Builder Green Living program. He has provided advice on sustainability solutions and onsite environmental management on projects ranging from large infrastructure developments to small residential building companies. Phil has also spent time working for the Environment Protection Authority Victoria, Melbourne Water, local government and as an academic. In 2014 he received a fellowship from the International Specialised Skills Institute which enabled him to travel to Germany in 2015 to investigate job skills in the prefabricated construction industry. He has presented at forums and conferences both nationally and internationally on sustainability, modular construction and emerging industry trends.

Environmental Building Consultant Trainer MBAV - Sustainability Principles (2014 - 2018) Growing up in The Netherlands, Jan started his career as a writer/journalist and public relations manager with Elsevier’s Publishing Company in Amsterdam. The attraction of wide open spaces saw him immigrate in 1983 to the Yukon, Canada, where after a short stint as a communications strategist for the government, he became involved in Canada’s super energy efficient building program labelled ‘R-2000’. Over the following 12 years Jan developed extensive knowledge in sustainable and energy efficient construction. First starting as a builder of R-2000 homes in Canada’s far North in the 1980s, he later progressed into a building consultant and building inspector. 1995 saw Jan immigrate to Australia. He soon discovered that the importance of energy efficiency was not widely recognised in Australian construction. To share his knowledge in this area, he developed a number of demonstration projects: ‘The Healthy House”, ‘The Eco-home’ and ‘ The Economical House’, which were all built in Sunbury, Victoria. He received invitations to guest lecture at a number of universities on sustainable building, and developed training programs for energy efficient construction. As an environmental building consultant Jan advises on a wide range of issues to both industry and private clients. As a trainer for Master Builders Victoria, and wilth 35 years of experience, Jan combines his journalism background with his practical building skills. His focus is strongly on future industry developments with education being the key ingredient.

After obtaining double degrees from the University of Melbourne, Paul has spent a considerable amount of time participating on both local and international projects, working across all facets of the building construction industry including Domestic, Civil, Commercial, Land Subdivision and Property Development in both Private and Public Sectors. Through his career, Paul has been appointed as Estimator, Contract Administrator, Project Manager, Client Side Project Manager, Senior Project Manager, Chief Estimator, Project Director and had held various Company Directorship. His roles have seen him successfully deliver a portfolio of diverse and complex projects and developments. His most recent appointment was as Project Director at one of the fastest growing companies, Greenland Holding Group, currently ranked 202 in the Global Fortune 500 list. He worked on their tallest residential tower in Sydney known as “Greenland Centre” — currently under construction and will stand 235m tall. Paul joined Codicote as Director in 2018 is also a director at a construction consultancy firm Pi Projects.

Design Manager at FPPV Architecture Bachelor of Architecture Architects Registration Board of Victoria, Registration No. 2758 Geoff is highly experienced as a design architect specialising in the master planning and detailed design of major projects, urban spaces, multi-storey office buildings and large scale public facilities. His understanding of highly accessible public environments, of pedestrian infrastructure elements and key building services interfaces has been demonstrated throughout his career. Geoff has extensive experience in the areas of commercial building, Educational, Institutional and Local and State Government buildings, and complex heritage issues. He is a strategic thinker with a sophisticated knowledge of architectural planning and contemporary aesthetics and practiced environmental design skills. He has also designed many residential buildings, from some of the first buildings with passive and active sustainability features in the 1970s, through to the present time working for repeat and recommended clients, and influenced by his work on the first green office building in Melbourne; 60L for the Australian Conservation Foundation. Geoff has a great capacity to visualise and develop conceptual solutions for a wide array of project types. His visualizations are locally and internationally acknowledged as being highly successful in communicating to the public and stakeholder groups the key design criteria in planning and design.

Stephen is a qualified and registered domestic and commercial builder, with 30 years experience in both realms. His construction company covers all elements of major structural aspects of single, multi-level developments and refurbishments. Stephen has particular skill sets in civil and all areas of structural design and construction (timber, steel and concrete) works, and has significant and vast experience with new buildings and major extension works. He has a particular interest in difficult builds, period restoration and sustainability. Stephen is currently studying Diploma in Building & Construction (Building) & Diploma in Building & Construction (Management).

Sylvia holds an EMBA, a Bachelor of Commerce and has attained a Building Practitioner Licence from the Victorian Building Authority Sylvia is a strategic leader with expertise in infrastructure advisory, project planning and delivery. Her breadth and depth of experience spans across the commercial, residential, retail, health and education sectors. She has managed public/private infrastructure portfolios of up to $750 million. These initiatives have transformed communities, health care and education across Victoria. She is a Graduate of the Australian Institute Company Directors and a Non-Executive Director of a Public Hospital Board.

Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Engineering (Project Management) Peter has over 35 years experience in planning, design and construction having held senior executive roles in both the public and private sectors. As Business Development/Design Manager for Devco Project and Construction Management, Peter develops and implements business growth and marketing strategies. Peter joined Devco in 2013 after several years in similar roles with major commercial construction contractors. Previously Peter was the Victorian Director of a national architectural practice where he was leading a team of architects, interior designers, planners and urban designers on construction and related consultancy projects. Peter’s experience in capital works planning, project development and design management are services he provides to clients as part of his role at Devco Project and Construction Management. Peter has been a judge with the Master Builders for the Regional Building Awards since 2009.

GSAP, Environmental Management CertIV qualified Masters qualifications in Sustainable Practices Joe has been involved as a Master Builders Victoria Judge for over 10 years and continues in the industry with over 30 years experience in construction, delivering projects across multiple disciplines. These include schools, aged care, retirement villages, community centres, hotels, high-rise apartment developments, commercial offices, retail department stores, shopping centres, boutique and ‘high street’ retail stores, sports & recreation facilities, streetscapes, landscapes and Industrial projects. He is firmly focused on Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality outcomes within the life cycle of every development. With extensive liaison with clients, consultants, and subcontractors, he is able to guide projects to be completed on time, on budget and to the right standards.

Efy is currently the General Manager of the Victorian Government’s Domestic Building Insurance (DBI) Program responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of this mandatory insurance product that insures over 16,000 builders annually. Having completed a Construction Management degree at RMIT University and worked for a number of Melbourne’s leading building companies, Efy has extensive experience in commercial and residential building projects. Efy is a Past President of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Building and was the first female appointed to this position, as well as being an Adjunct Fellow (Building and Construction) at Holmesglen Institute. In 2011 Efy was awarded the prestigious NAWIC Crystal Vision Award for the advancement of the interests of women in the construction industry. This recognised her contributions through professional roles in the building industry and on State and Federal Boards. In 2017, Efy led the transformation of the DBI service delivery model to the domestic building industry. This was underpinned by the successful launch of a new digital IT platform, “BuildVic” that provides builders with access to cover 24/7. Importantly, it resulted in a 20% reduction in the cost of insurance premiums to builders and enables homeowners to access information portals and online claims lodgement tools.

Bachelor of Engineering (Building) Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building (Victorian and National committees) Past President of the Victorian Chapter of the AIB Dino is a highly experienced builder with over 25 years of experience delivering a range of projects in the commercial construction sector. He has spent the last 17 years with a major Melbourne builder as a Project Manager and Construction Manager, specialising in residential high rise projects with values up to $140m. In this time he has overseen the completion of more than 4000 apartments and various other commercial and retail projects, he continues to be responsible for the management of design teams, contract management and administration, project planning and programming, implementation of quality and safety systems and the execution of projects through to handover.

After owning and operating his own design and drafting business, Max joined Metricon where he began as a Project Designer and quickly escalated to Project Manager — Developments, where he was responsible for the delivery of medium density product from concept to completion. A four year period as Victorian Products Manager at Burbank provided a stepping stone to his current position at one of Victoria’s leading builder Simonds. Today, Max acts as National Products Range Manager, a position he has held for the past nine years. Superintending the Products Department and with offices in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales, Max is responsible for Product Innovation and delivery of Product on all aspects of the business by the award-winning builder.

David joined the building industry in 1959 as an apprentice. After completion he spent the next 16 years self employed, employing three apprentices. He worked on extensions, renovations and new homes, as well as government contracts, major restoration projects in Mt Macedon and Toorak. He joined the Master Builders Victoria in August 1981. Along with Barry Partridge, David was involved in the Master Builders Group Scheme until BIGS took it over. David went on to work in the Membership department, servicing members in Gippsland and the North East of the State. David ran seminars on several issues including the introduction of HGFL, 5 Star, Building Practitioners Board, Warranty Insurance, RES Code, GST, Red card, and spoke on Industry topics at Trade Nights. David joined CBus in 2005 on a 12 month contract to help with the introduction of choice to the Building Industry (where employees can choose between retail and industry funds). This turned into a full time position. After seven years at Cbus, David is now enjoying retirement..

Associate Member of Australian Institute of Architects Member of Archicentre Panel member VSCC Christopher McSteen is a Director of McSteen Tan Architects, an inner-city architectural firm dealing in a number of design areas including new housing, town house developments, housing renovations and additions, school buildings, commercial offices, factories and Town Planning applications. His office projects vary enormously and range in size from $20M — $0.5M. Whilst Chris’s work has mainly been in Victoria, he has also spent several years overseas working in America and Italy on a range of design projects from high rise residential to urban design, to tourist related facilities. His interest in Italian architecture — classical and modern — takes him back to study in Italy every 1-2 years. He was involved as the Design Architect with several TV stations, Channel 7 and Channel 9, for a series of Architectural Programmes: Channel 7, 2004 — ‘The Terraces’ and Channel 9, 2013 — ‘The Tyler Fishlock Home’. He has received a number of design awards, including most recently in 2014, the Urban Design Award from Boroondara Council for Best Heritage Conservation, Additions and Alterations. He has acted as Architectural Lecturer at public forums for Environmental Design Seminars at Playbox and Sustainable Design Seminars at BMW Edge, Federation Square. His work has been published in a variety of areas including Home Beautiful, Kitchens and Bathrooms, RAIA Awards and The Age.

Degree in Civil Engineering at Monash University Master Builders Board of Management; President from 2008 to 2010 Building Practitioners Board (20002008); co-opted member until the Board was disbanded in 2016. David has been involved in the building and construction industry since completing a Degree in Civil Engineering at Monash University in 1971. After over 20 years in project management in commercial building with projects including the Reserve Bank Note Printing Works at Craigieburn and the Melbourne Central Project, he moved to residential building as Victorian Building Manager for AVJennings in 1992. In 1997 he joined with two other partners for a management buyout of Stonehaven Homes where he remained until his retirement in 2016. Stonehaven Homes is an architectural design and construction company involved in inner suburban residential housing. David’s involvement with Master Builders extends back to receiving industrial advice in the late 1970s. His main involvement occurred when he joined the housing sector committee in 1992. He was elected chairman soon thereafter and served on the state council from that time. Following eight years on the Board of Management he became President from 2008 to 2010. David served for eight years on the Building Practitioners Board from 2000 to 2008 and continued as a coopted member until the Board was disbanded in 2016. He has served on the CoINVEST (building industry long service leave fund) board since being elected in 2011. David has enjoyed his time in the building industry and has recently joined the Victorian Small Business Mentoring Service as a volunteer to share his experience with others.

Registered Builder & Architecture After completing Architecture, Michael worked with Graeme Gunn and Merchant Builders for nine years from 1970-79. In 1981, he established the Design & Construct Company of Urban Spaces and registered as both Builder and Architect. The Company specialised in building restoration, custom housing and domestic alterations for 28 years. Over this period the Company won 12 Master Builders Awards for their projects. Michael became a member of Master Builders Victoria in 1983 and graduated from the Housing Committee in 1988 to Council and Board member in 1995. Michael was President of Master Builders Victoria from 2000–2002 and participated on the National Housing Board from 2000–2004. In 2004 Michael was awarded Life Membership to Master Builders Victoria.

Peter Sutton is the owner, as well as builder and designer for Sutton Constructions. Sutton Constructions is a multi awardwinning company that individually designs and builds unique, ultra energy efficient homes. He has been a member of Master Builders Victoria for over 25 years. Within this time, Peter has sat on the Board and Council of Management. Peter has been judging the Master Builders Excellence in Housing Awards for five years.

The founder of Pivot homes, a custom design and construction company building on the surf coast for more than 25 years, Austin has himself been the recipient of more than 50 awards —including Building Designer of the Year and Builder of the Year. Austin has served as a past chairman of the Western District Master Builders Victoria country housing and Apprentice of the Year committees. He is also a member of the surf coast planning committee and was a member of the Geelong land committee for some time. Having recently retired, Austin is now finding time to return to the water. As a keen sailor, he and his wife, Jan, have sailed their yacht up to the Whitsundays. He also enjoys water skiing, snow skiing and golf. Austin was delighted to this year take on the challenge of judging these awards.

C J Henderson are a small boutique building company that pride themselves on retaining the highest standards of workmanship and flexibility through the construction period to ensure their clients get the end product they deserve. For their Jan Juc project, key considerations in construction had to be worked through to manage the multiple junctions between old and new, for a seamless transition and relationship. The design documentation specified key alignments of rooflines, walls, pitching points and internal timber linings between old and new. A datum line was set up to carry the existing floor and roof levels through the building, while the ceiling was pitched exactly from this datum line with highlight glazing starting from the existing ceiling. This project involved the significant renovation of an existing 1940s brick-joined home in a heritage subdivision on an unusually shaped block. The new section of the home was set off the existing rooms with a glazed connection and bridge link. This created a clear delineation between the new and old house, to enable a respectful heritage response. To enable a light filled sunny north west aspect to the garden and connection with the internal living spaces, the house hugs the south and east boundary. A double height void over the dining area allows light to penetrate and warm the home, and, opens up a seamless connection to the significant existing trees on site. The combination of raw in-situ concrete, black zinc, white joinery and warm timber provides a sophisticated modern and homely palette.

The scope of works for this project, was a very clear vision from the outset. The owners wanted to retain the existing brick veneer, single-storey residence but, in essence, ended up with a home that felt like a new build. This was achieved by taking the existing ceiling heights and making this a visual line that continued out to the northern extension. The use of natural timber was the main detail, with recycled blackbutt vertical wall battens used as external cladding to block some sections of the house. A burnished heated concrete floor and large timber pivot doors were also installed - adding to the house’s charm.

The project involved the refurbishment and extension of an original Victorian mansion opposite Fitzroy Gardens. The ground floor had most recently been used as commercial office space, so rooms were changed from offices and boardrooms to kitchens, living and sitting rooms. The basement was converted from a disused storage space to a fully fitted 35sq m wine cellar. On the first floor many walls were removed to open up larger bedrooms, bathrooms and incorporate a new laundry. The challenge of relocating openings, walls and fireplaces was significant due to the double and triple brick walls throughout. The main stairwell had a void cut into it to bring light across all three levels.

JARtB House reconnects the abandoned notion that art and architecture are separate techne. Part house and part art gallery, art is used to connect, inform and program space. The project incorporated a complex stepped concrete facade and wall system with a large circular cut out for the entry which presented many complexities in construction. The glass façade and windows system were developed in conjunction with the glazier, window contractor, builder and architect. Tycorp Construction specialises in high-quality, multi-unit residential and commercial projects. For this development they used existing materials common to the area including brick, render and weatherboard lightweight structures. Framed double-height voids were finished externally in smooth concrete, punctuating the finer-grained textural charred-timber facades. At their upper levels, outdoor living zones complement this enriched ground plane experience. Modulating balcony depths (again finished in textured charred timber), overlook the streetto embrace and enhance their local environ. Additionally, the project includes underground rainwater harvesting, solar panels and electric car charging.

There is a two-level basement (with a 27-space car-stacking system), subterranean rumpus rooms, three levels of living spaces and a rooftop terrace to each. The townhouse facades are a glazed curtain wall system with a bespoke timber and steel screen over. All 15 dwellings feature high-quality flooring, tiles, stone, joinery and fittings. The sustainable design began by taking into consideration the geographical orientation of the block and local weather patterns to maximise the north-facing aspect of the compact allotment. From here, the final result included features such as the living room and bedrooms receiving warm winter sun and gable ceilings in the living room that give a sense of space and openness connecting to the exterior deck. Blackbutt flooring has been used as it is a preferred sustainable choice for its durability, strength and quick regenerative qualities. Bathroom, kitchen and laundry tapware were carefully selected for their WELS rating adding to the overall sustainable building techniques.

The brief was to create a luxurious and stylish bathroom, while ensuring that the room showcased a sense of spaciousness. The finishes on the various surfaces were to assist in reflecting light within the space and the use of clean lines is shown in the design of the vanity unit and shower screen. The tiles on the walls and floors were selected to accentuate a seamless finish and the colours of the materials chosen were to instill a sense of timelessness in that they are both classical, yet modern. The whites and soft greys (complemented with black accents) are ageless. The bathrooms feature wall-hung vanities with floor-to-ceiling porcelain tiles, frameless shower screens and quality tapware - all creating a luxurious feel.
