On behalf of Gympie Regional Council, I’d like to welcome you to our great region.

6712838aa

The Gympie region has become known for its diversity in all things – landscape, culture, and community. Our pocket of Australia has no shortage of places to see, food to try and things to do for all ages. Our unique position means we’re perfectly situated for visitors to take in the best of coast, country and hinterland all year round. Our footprint to the east encompasses the Cooloola Coast, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach areas – perfect spots to surf, camp, 4WD, snorkel and even swim with dolphins in their natural environment. Discover the World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, only a short barge ride away from our shore, or take in Rainbow Beach’s famous multi-coloured sands from the Carlo Sand Blow. To the south-west, the Mary Valley and hinterland area remain one of Gympie’s best kept secrets. Here you’ll find access to waterways with newly-installed canoe and kayak access points, local cheese producers, bed and breakfasts and country pubs. Our quaint country towns such as Imbil and Kandanga are perfect for families looking for an affordable, quiet getaway. In the Gympie Town Centre, visitors can take a walk through Gympie’s rich living history on the Gympie Town Centre Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail celebrates Gympie’s architecture, much of which has been well preserved and maintained across the last century. For nature enthusiasts, the River to Rail Trail is an easy 1km walk from the Town Centre, and showcases the best of the Mary River from its banks. Heritage Trails and Rail Trails are also available in historic ‘Clock Town’ Goomeri and Kilkivan townships. Council’s aim is to ensure the Gympie region remains an affordable holiday choice and we’re proud of what we can offer those staying in the area. Visitors can enjoy many tourism activities, such as the rail, heritage and river trails, for free. Only two hours’ drive north of Brisbane via the Bruce Highway, and an hour either side of the Fraser and Sunshine Coasts, Gympie is an accessible and affordable choice for a break away. We’re very lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world, and we hope you enjoy your stay.

WILDLIFE RESCUE FOR SICK AND INJURED WILDLIFE

CALL the Gympie ANARRA (Australian Native Animal Rescue Rehabilitation Association) wildlife rescue hotline on 5484 9111. RSPCA’s 24 hour 1300 animal (1300 264 645) also links callers to local services anywhere in Queensland. Injured wildlife can also be taken to a veterinary clinic where they will be assessed and allocated to licensed wildlife carers or sent to a wildlife hospital. Vet clinics and rescue groups do not charge to accept wildlife. If you find a dead or injured kangaroo, wallaby, possum or koala check for a pouch (if safe to do so) and do not remove furless joeys from the teat.

KOALAS

FOR koala rescue and conservation use the wildlife rescue phone numbers as above. (Any koala hit by a vehicle or bitten by a dog must receive urgent treatment. It is also important to report all dead koalas). The koala is classified as vulnerable in Queensland under the Nature

Conservation Act 1992. Contact Koala Action Gympie Region (KAGR) on Facebook regarding local koala conservation.

WILD DOG AND OTHER PEST ANIMAL SPECIES

ALL wild doges in Queensland are declared Calss 2 pest animals under the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. Please report your feral animal issue to the Gympie Regional Council's Lands Protection Team on 1300 307 800. Various options may be available depending on your location, issue and eligibility.

ANIMALS DOG PARKS

THERE are off-leash dog parks located at Archery Park and Lake Alford. Both are completely fenced, allowing dog owners to let their pets run around off-leash. There is plenty of space to throw a ball and the parks offer travellers passing through with pets a welcome break.

GUIDELINES FOR OWNERS

DOGS REGISTRATION of all dogs is mandatory; however no registration fee applies for dogs that are both microchipped and desexed. A maximum of two dogs is permitted per property, unless owners obtain a permit approved by council. Owners should provide facilities to contain dogs at all times. It is an offence for dogs to stray in any part of

the region and may result in impounding. Pets must be leashed in public and owners are responsible for their animal’s waste. CATS CAT registration is currently not required in our region. Up to two cats per property is permitted unless approved by council. All reasonable attempts must be made to keep cats on the owner’s property and straying cats may be impounded by the council. MICROCHIPPING IT IS compulsory to microchip dogs and cats over the age of 12 weeks. All relevant microchipping information forms should be lodged with Central Animal Records or the Australasian Animal Registry. HORSES AND CATTLE SOME livestock are not to be kept on any land less than 4000 sq m. To report straying stock,

contact council on 1300 307 800. POULTRY AND BIRDS POULTRY, pigeon and caged birds are to be kept in a nuisance-free manner. Poultry is prohibited on a property less than 1000m2, however, council approval can be sought by poultry owners on smaller properties, provided they are also members of a recognised poultry club. Roosters are prohibited on an urban property or property

less than 10,000m2, however, approvals can be sought by rooster owners who are members of a recognised poultry club. RSPCA FACILITY AND ANIMAL POUND THE RSPCA onsite re-homing shelter on Laurenceson Rd, Gympie, can be contacted on 5482 9407 about lost or impounded pets. For the collection of stray or surrendered dogs and cats, contact the council on 1300 307 800.

take in the scenery. The Trail is well-positioned for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers to spot native species such as the Mary River Turtle, Giant Barred Frog, Mary River Cod, Australian Lungfish and a wide variety of native birdlife. The Sands, which can be accessed via Kidgell Street, off the Bruce Highway when travelling north (to the left just before the Aldi supermarket) provides the community with a safe area to swim in shallow waters, have a picnic and relax. Recreational paddlers can easily access the water at either end of the track via a flat, gravel access to the river’s edge at the Sands or a purpose-built canoe and kayak launch point at the Gympie Weir, near Kidd Bridge. Designated off-street parking areas are available at either end. A second stage of the trail is currently in the planning and design phase, focusing on the section from the Sands through the Deep Creek Conservation Area to the One Mile Ovals and up to the Mary Valley Rattler Station. THE Gympie region includes unique coastal, rural and urban hinterland landscapes; one third of which is national park or state forest. Gympie Regional Council aims to provide community members and visitors the opportunity to experience our abundant natural assets by river and land. A range of recreational bushwalking, cycling, and horse-riding trails are available for use across the region. The River to Rail Trail is located within 1km from the Gympie Town Centre, and includes opportunities for all fitness levels. The 1.8km gravel link, which skirts along the banks of the Mary River between Kidd Bridge and the Sands recreational area, is ideal for walking, running and admiring the native habitat and wildlife exclusive to the area. The track runs parallel to the natural landscape of the Mary River and is an idyllic passive recreation experience, however, does include varying inclines and staircases in some areas. Sandstone seating blocks are placed throughout the track to rest, picnic or just

SCHOLASTIC OPPORTUNITIES EDUCATION is a big part of a person’s life and there are many fine institutions in and around Gympie. Gympie has a wide range of pre-school and child care facilities and a number of different care options are available. The region also boasts excellent primary and secondary schools in both the public and private sector. Students from both public and private schools have gone on to represent the region in scholastic and sporting endeavours. When choosing a school for your child it is important to remember the catchment system for public schools is in place, but there are exceptions to these rules. Queensland children are expected to attend the primary or secondary school which is closest to their home by the most direct path. Some of these catchment areas can overlap, so in those cases choices are available to students. Also, if the school you are interested in sending your child to has not reached its enrolment capacity, they may accept a certain number of out of area students on

GYMPIE HOSPITAL: CELEBRATING 150 YEARS

GYMPIE Hospital has a long and proud history of serving the community. The facility was founded as the Nashville Miners Hospital on January 31, 1868. A true facility for the community, Nashville Miners Hospital was paid for by subscriptions collected from members of the community. The subscription contribution survived in some form or other until the early 1940s. The Minutes of the Local Management Committee dated June 7 1869 made the first official reference to the Gympie Hospital. It may have been around this time that the Nashville township also took this name (after the Gimpi Gimpi a native stinging tree). Gympie Hospital was one of the largest training hospitals in Australia, with the first Queensland male nurse also being

trained at Gympie. Today, Gympie Hospital continues to provide healthcare excellence to the community and remains one of the largest employers in the region: ■ Gympie Hospital (GH) provides healthcare to a catchment area of about 7000sqkm. ■ The hospital has about 90 beds and 361 full-time equivalent workers in three areas; 309 at Gympie Hospital, 21 with Gympie Mental Health Service and 31 at the Gympie Oral Health Service. ■ In 2016/17 there were 14,204 in-patients, 354 births and 30,353 emergency department presentations. This year promises to be significant for the Gympie region, with the G150 celebrations being expanded from 2017 and into 2018. To mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Gympie Hospital, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health

THERE are a number of Not-For-Profit and charitable organisations in the Gympie region who will welcome donations of good quality pre-loved items of clothing, furniture or bric-a-brac. Some may even be happy to come and take away large furniture items - check with the organisation in question.

Let us introduce ourselves. We are simply a group of people who are attempting to restore the message set forth by Jesus in the New Testament. Christ intended there to be one church, His church. He wants us to follow His commands, without adding our own man-made rules (Matt 15:8-9) We answer to no human individual or headquarters (Matt 28:18) According to the Bible, each congregation of believers is to be autonomous and self-governing. We call ourselves the Church of Christ (Roman 16:16), Church of God (Acts 20:28), Saints (Ephesians 1:1), Christians (1Peter 4:P16) or any other biblical term.

LITTLE Haven Palliative Care and Cancer Support Inc has a system of care for terminally ill patients that is envied across the state. The Not-For-Profit organisation offers its services free of charge to patients and families 24 hours a day, seven days a week. While it receives some funding from the state government, the bulk of the funding the organisation uses to maintain the service is raised by volunteers at different fundraising events throughout the year. In addition to the facilities onsite at the Gympie Hospital grounds the staff at Little Haven travel to patients homes to provide nursing care and assistance where needed, allowing terminally ill patients to remain in their homes amongst family and friends for their final days. Some of the services provided by Little Haven are extended to the family and carers of patients, such as grief and bereavement counselling, advice and practical assistance and emotional support. These are complementary services; provided free of charge. Little Haven Palliative Care and Cancer Support Inc is always grateful for community assistance with volunteering, fundraising or donations. PARKS

THE Gympie region has numerous parks with facilities for the residents and visitors to enjoy. A permit is necessary to conduct a function such as a wedding or fete in a park or on a beach. For more information, contact the council on 1300 307 800. LAKE ALFORD AN INNOVATIVE playground has been created at Lake Alford on the Bruce Hwy, south of Gympie, and is specially designed to meet the needs of children of all abilities, their families and carers. The council created the play space in collaboration with Disability Services and the local community. The playground features a range of natural and built environments to encourage different types of play. MEMORIAL PARK THE beautiful heritage-listed rotunda at Memorial Park in the heart of Gympie affords a great view of the city centre from the platform in the established gardens. The central location and open spaces surrounding the park make it a great spot to stop for a break.

VICTORY HEIGHTS TRAIL NETWORK

A LOCAL trail network for passive recreation (walking, mountain biking, horse riding) has been developed by local not-for-profit community group Cooloola Trail Care Alliance. The facility is within 3km of Gympie’s town centre. The trails weave through 60ha of mature eucalypt forest providing unique and accessible nature-based recreation options for locals and visitors.

BEACHES

THE Cooloola Coast offers incredible diversity along its long golden shorelines including Rainbow Beach, Double Island Point, Inskip Point and Tin Can Bay. Rainbow Beach is patrolled by surf lifesavers. For a guide on patrol times visit rainbowbeachsurf.com.au.
