PRESIDENT’S FOREWORD Welcome to the Master Builders Excellence in Housing Awards 2018 magazine.

from innovative renovations and additions to high-end, contemporary apartments and everything imaginable in-between.

The Master Builders Excellence in Housing Awards event is a special occasion—a party of sorts, but also a chance to bring into sharp focus the work that our colleagues have been doing for their clients.

CBD Contracting Group Pty Ltd earns the title of Master Builder of the Year for its work on an extraordinary Brighton home that stacks bold geometric shapes of various textures. The home distils its environmental achievements, like temperature control, sun protection and privacy, into dramatic gestures that contrast sharply with the surrounding neighbourhood.

The projects that follow represent the best residential work in Victoria. It’s the housing yearbook for 2018, and I hope you’ll enjoy seeing how Master Builders like you, have given it shape and structure. As I’ve mentioned before, the projects featured tonight have been built for clients, not us. The Excellence in Housing Awards is as much about the intangibles—the inspiration, conversations, squabbles, breakthroughs—as what we can see up on the screen behind me and on the pages before you. The homes inside these pages illustrate the diversity of dwellings Master Builders have contributed to Victoria’s residential communities. They range

Todd Newman Builders takes the title of Regional Residential Builder of the Year with a Bendigo home that reveals its numerous merits only to those who enter. The builders made excellent use of the graphic character inherent in the natural materials of surfaces and joinery. Dark veins and threads in the stone, for example, become part of the visual structure of spaces. And we commend Nick Lonsdale of Lonsdale Building Group on being named Young Builder of the Year. Master Builders could not fully recognize the achievements of our members without experienced and

highly qualified judges, who appear on the pages immediately following. We thank them for donating considerable time to the process, and for allowing us to benefit from their expertise. Master Builders also enjoys the support of many valuable sponsors; without their help we would not be able to celebrate the winners in such fine style. We thank them for their ongoing support of excellence in the building and construction industry.

Compound House, Brighton Donald Moore 03 9376 0822 www.cbdcontracting.com.au March Studio, Rodney Eggleston Dan Fuge Photography

The structure is oriented along an East, West Axis, with glazing to the North and solid walls to the South. The thermal mass of these walls, combined with an exposed concrete slab on the ground level, retain and radiate heat during winter. During hotter summer months, the copper screen and the offset overhang of the upper floor protects the ground floor from the high summer sun. The house is entirely double glazed and the garden and pool are fed by a submerged tank. An angled garage door, eludes to be half open. When open, it reveals deep into the block, momentarily offering a tantalising view of the entire site and challenging the notion of the ‘backyard’ and private open space. The Compound is resilient, resembling a series of stacked elements opposed to the walls and rooflines of a traditional house. 16 MASTER BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA 2018 WINNING HOMES

Requiring an open living space and more of a connection to their garden, the beautiful Moonah tree became the focal point for this renovation and extension of this 1960’s house. The clients required a kitchen that flowed to their outdoor space as well as a north-facing area where they could socialise in winter. The original timber ceiling was honoured in the extension through the hardwood lining boards and the Glulam beams. The original kitchen and living wall which housed the cupboards and pantry was removed, and in turn, housed the custom-oiled, black, maxi-bond ply cabinetry for the new dining room storage, book shelf and tv stand. The design was very challenging with the timber finishes and waffle ceiling all being exposed.

A stunning homage to early Australia and Manhattan, the brief was to create a functional home, with a very compact footprint, that made good use of space. Many internal walls were removed to open spaces and create room for modern living and entertaining. Given approval to add two levels, the bedrooms take up the first and second floors with further alfresco entertaining spaces on the roof level. Each bedroom floor has its own bathroom with a powder room on the ground floor to keep negotiating stairs to a minimum. All fixtures are slim- line, efficient and reflect a modern industrial look. Windows and doors take advantage of high ceilings offering light and a sense of space. The original home’s red bricks were reused across the three levels.

With the original shell and interiors intact and untouched, this single-fronted Victorian was beautifully brought into the current age. Heritage guidelines in mind, the clients favoured a sympathetic restoration of the front of the house with a clear transition between old and new.. The original two bedrooms were restored and share a new bathroom, kitchen-dining-living, as well as a study. A central courtyard now gives northern light into the living space and creates cross ventilation. To the rear, the car space is partially beneath the first floor, maximising its footprint. The first- floor rumpus room opens out toward the front and a large terrace. This is below the heritage sight-line, won’t be built out, and will always maintain its northern light.

Redesigned to create little need for maintenance, without compromising on style, the high, concrete walls are a highlight of this renovated family home. Inside, lining-board ceilings throughout keep the beach house theme, while plaster reveals were installed to all windows and doors to eliminate architraves. The ten-metre hallway takes you past walls of glass overlooking the pool, then opening into the free-flowing kitchen, dining and living area. This large room can be opened with four sets of bifold doors creating an outdoor alfresco feel. This swimming pool is controlled by phone app and is a picturesque centrepiece of the home.

The high level of demand for design solutions favouring shallow allotments was the driver for the Finlay. Although presented with a smaller footprint to work with, buyers still preferred key inclusions found in larger single-storey designs such as two living areas, a walk-in pantry and a powder room. The Finlay offers all these without the home feeling compromised. Communal spaces with a good line of sight from the kitchen hub to the living zones and outdoor entertaining space are included in the design. It was also imperative for the kitchen was to be the focal point and the heart of the home, and to ensure that storage space was given sufficient consideration..

This space can be transformed into complete privacy using total block-out roller blinds, or softened using sheer curtains, to allow for natural light to filter in, whilst still maintaining a level of privacy.

REGIONAL JUDGES

ANGELO INGUANTI NORTHERN REGION

IAN LEE NORTHERN REGION

CHRIS MOREY NORTHERN REGION

PETER HELFER SOUTH EAST REGION

Angelo Inguanti entered into the building industry as a young carpenter apprentice in 1965 after leaving the family market gardening business to carry out cabinetry, framing, lockup and fixings and progressed to become a registered builder in 1983. Angelo has built more than 250 homes as a sole trader within the metropolitan area and Bellarine Peninsula.

Born and breed in Geelong, Ian completed a Carpentry & Joinery apprenticeship in 1958 mainly building houses & maintenance. After meeting the love of his life in Hobart after a yacht race, Ian and his wife set up home in Hobart and set about building Spec homes until 1977 when the desire for some warmer weather brought about a move to the Gold Coast where he continued with Spec Building. In 1980 Ian returned to his home town of Geelong where he continued building now with the help of his two sons.

Chris completed an apprenticeship with H.F. Yuncken in Melbourne in 1970, followed by training in Estimating and Project Management. In 1974 Chris took the position of Area Manager in Bendigo.

Peter has over 35 years experience in capital works development and construction having held senior roles in both the public and private sectors. Peter is the Business Development Manager for Devco Project and Construction Management where he is responsible for pre-construction business and marketing strategies. Peter holds a Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Engineering (Project Management). He has been a valuable member of the Master Builders Regional Awards judging team since 2009.

Now retired at Point Lonsdale thus giving him much more time to enjoy his family and grandchildren and travelling around Australia and Europe with his wife, Antoinette

Ian has been retired for 13 years enjoying quality time with his wife which includes sailing in the summer and an annual caravan holiday to Queensland for 3 months during the chilly winter months.

Chris established Morey and Hurford Master Builders in 1991.The company specialised in medium to large commercial work throughout central Victoria, employing an average of 40 people during his 18 years in business. Chris retired in 2009 but has not slowed down; with a 12 acre property he grows olive trees and Shiraz grapes, has many alpacas and a keen and active interest in breeding and racing thoroughbreds. With six grandchildren across different states, Chris and his wife enjoy catching up with their family and travelling. Chris has maintained an interest in the building industry, assisting the local Grammar school in Bendigo as a building consultant. He has maintained a domestic unlimited and commercial licence and is presently assisting his son-in-law with the setup of his own building company. A member of Master Builders Association of Victoria since 1970, this is his seventh year judging the Regional Building Awards.

REGIONAL JUDGES

DAVID MCMATH SOUTH EAST REGION

BILL MILLER SOUTH WEST REGION

BRIAN MACSWEENEY SOUTH WEST REGION

AUSTIN SWAIN SOUTH WEST REGION

David joined the Building Industry in 1959 as an apprentice. After completion he spent the next 16 years self employed, with three apprentices.

Married with three children and eight grandchildren, Bill enjoys an active lifestyle playing golf, bike riding, fishing and touring the outback.

Starting an apprenticeship in carpentry at just 14 years of age, Brian spent 53 years working in the building industry, forming Brimor Constructions in the 1970s.

He worked on extensions, renovations and new homes, as well as Government contracts, major restoration projects in Mt Macedon and Toorak.

As an apprentice carpenter in 1970, Bill began his career with Ross and Smith Pty Ltd Builders — learning all facets of building work, residential, extensions and commercial projects. In 1975, he began work with John W Henderson Pty Ltd — making a move to commercial and light industrial work. Bill was also a site foreman with Ron Alexander Builders for five years.

Working on residential projects in metropolitan Melbourne and throughout the North West of the state, Brian has seen many changes within the industry.

The founder of Pivot homes, a custom design and construction company building on the surf coast for over 25 years, Austin has himself been the recipient of over 50 awards including Building Designer of the Year and Builder of the Year.

Bill began his career as Assistant Building Surveyor and Building Inspector in 1985 when he commenced at Borough of Eaglehawk and shared half his time with the Shire of Huntly. After 10 years he joined Master Builders Association of Victoria as a building inspector for the Bendigo region, shortly after the Victorian Government permitted private surveyors /inspectors to operate in Victoria. Bill has been involved with the MBAV Golf Day, judging of the “Apprentice of the Year” Awards and various other member activities.

In his spare time, Brian enjoys spending time on his property breeding parrots and goats and simply enjoying the rural lifestyle. With three grandchildren, Brian and his wife are kept busy with regular Queensland holidays.

He joined the Master Builders in August 1981. Along with Barry Partridge, David was involved in the Master Builders Group Scheme until BIGS took it over. David went on to work in the membership department, servicing members in Gippsland and the North East of the State. David ran seminars on several issues including the introduction of HGFL, 5 Star, Building Practitioners Board, Warranty Insurance, RES Code, GST, Red card, and spoke on industry topics at trade nights. David joined CBus in 2005 on a 12 month contract to help with the introduction of choice to the building industry (where employees can choose between retail and industry funds). This turned into a full time position and after seven years David is now enjoying retirement.

With an initial focus on renovations Brian’s work soon moved to the construction of new homes, providing mostly for the first home buyers market. A Master Builders member for more than 20 years, this was his fourth year at judging of the Regional Building Awards.

Austin has served as a past chairman of the Western District Master Builders Association of Victoria Country Housing and Apprentice of the Year committees. He is also a member of the surf coast planning committee and was a member of the Geelong land committee for some time. Having recently retired, Austin is now finding time to return to the water. As a keen sailor, he and his wife Jan, have sailed their yacht up to the Whitsundays. He also enjoys water skiing, snow skiing and golf. Austin was delighted this year to take on the challenge of judging these awards.

Designed to capture the water views, this home includes four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a double garage. Working on a sloped allotment, the exterior of this complicated and labour-intensive build was constructed of lightweight, colour bond cladding, with core-filled brickwork to the lower level.
