Ս. ՎԱՐԴԱՆ ՄԱՅՐ ՏԱՃԱՐ The bronze doors of New York’s St. Vartan Cathedral were consecrated on May 31, 2009, as the culmination of the cathedral’s 40th anniversary year. More than three decades in the planning, the grand portal tells the story of the conversion of Armenia to Christianity.

The two panels depict the baptism of King Drtad III by St. Gregory the Illuminator in A.D. 301, marking the moment when Armenia became history’s first Christian nation. Later, St. Gregory beheld a vision of Christ descending from heaven and striking the ground with a golden hammer, beckoning him to build the great cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin on the designated spot. Tradition has it that King Drtad himself, as Armenia’s first Christian king, carried stones down from Mount Ararat to raise up the mother cathedral.

The sculpted artwork on the doors also portrays Queen Ashkhen, who preceded her husband in embracing Christianity, and helped to spread the new faith throughout Armenia. The transom above the portal bears the image of Christ with an inscription that honors the date of the cathedral’s consecration – April 28, 1968 – by His Holiness Vasken I, the 130th Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians (1955-1994).

ՍԵՒԱՆԱՅ ՎԱՆՔ Founded in the 9th century

by Princess Mariam Bagratouni, the Monastery of Sevan is comprised of the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Church of the Mother-of-God. Pictured at near right is one of the oldest surviving doors of the monastery, which is now housed in the National Picture Gallery in Yerevan. At far right is the main entryway of the Church of the Holy Apostles. Today the Sevan complex continues its monastic mission, training young seminarians at the nearby Vaskenian Theological Seminary, established in 1990.

ԽՈՐ-ՎԻՐԱՊ At left is the main entry door of the Church of the Mother-of-God, one of two churches at the Khor Virab Monastery.

A second church, named after St. Kevork, houses the pit where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held captive for 13 years. More than 21 feet deep, the pit is accessible by a metal ladder with 27 steps. The monastery itself sits on a hill in the Araratian Valley, facing the snow-capped peaks of Mount Ararat.

ԳԵՂԱՐԴ The Monastery of Keghart takes its name from the spear which pierced the side of Christ (the lance was at one time kept at the monastery, but is now located in Holy Etchmiadzin). The site is known for its many khatchkars and cave structures, which once served as monks’ cells and places of worship.

ՄԱՐՄԱՇԷՆ The monastic complex of Marmashen, located north of Gyumri, was a significant cultural center in medieval Armenia. The main part of the complex, consisting of three churches, was built in the 10th century by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni. A bit further off is a fourth church built in the 7th century. The largest church at Marmashen, called the Katoghike, is notable for its architectural resemblance to the Cathedral of Ani.

ԳԱՆՁԱՍԱՐ The Monastery of Kandzasar is the spiritual center of the Artsakh Diocese in NagornoKarabagh. Its name derives from the Armenian words kandz, or “treasure,” and sar, meaning “mountain.”

The main cathedral, built in the 13th century by Prince Hasan Jalal Vaghtangian, is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Tradition has it that the prince built the cathedral above the relic head of St. John, which he brought to the region from what is present-day Georgia.

ՍԱՆԱՀԻՆ The Holy Redeemer Church and the Church of the Mother-of-God, both dating to the 10th century, are at the center of the Sanahin Monastery, located in Armenia’s northern region of Lori.

The complex also includes a chapel, bell tower, library, school, and cemetery. Built over the remains of a 4th- or 5th-century church, the monastery was one of Armenia’s most influential centers between the 10th and 13th centuries. Its school was renowned for teaching medicine, painting, and the art of illumination. Pictured at right is the stoa of Grigor Magistros, part of the school building.

ՅՈՎՀԱՆՆԱՎԱՆՔ Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, Hovhannavank Monastery was established in the 13th century by Prince Vache Vachutian, though churches had been built on the site in the 4th and 6th centuries. The monastery is situated on the edge of the Kasagh gorge in Armenia’s Aragatsotn region.

Ս. ԷՋՄԻԱԾԻՆ The Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin is the spiritual center of the Armenian Church. It was built in A.D. 303, after St. Gregory the Illuminator had a vision in which Christ struck the ground with a golden hammer, and instructed Gregory to erect a church on the site. Today, Holy Etchmiadzin houses the administrative offices of the Armenian Church and the Kevorkian Theological Seminary.

ԳԵՂԱՐԴ The main churh at the Monastery of Keghart was built in the 13th century. Throughout its history, the monastery has been an important pilgrimage site, where many travel to drink the sacred water that flows from a rock located in the main church.

ՀԱՂԲԱՏ The Monastery of Haghbat, established by the Bagratouni dynasty in Armenia’s northern region of Lori, was a thriving religious and cultural center in medieval Armenia. In addition to the main church­­­—the 10th-century Church of the Holy Cross—the complex consists of two small churches, a library, a bell tower, and a refectory. Notable is the khatchkar of the Savior (above), dating to 1279, located in a room that leads to the monastery’s library.

ՆՈՐԱՎԱՆՔ The Noravank Monastery, or “new monastery,” dates to the beginning of the 12th century, when Bishop Hovhaness, the abbot of the Vahanavank Monastery, moved to the region and established a church. Today the monastery consists of the Church of St. Garabed, built between 1216 and 1227; the Chapel of St. Gregory, built in 1275; and the two-story Church of the Mother-of-God, built in 1339. Pictured at right is the ground-level entry door of the Church of the Mother-of-God, depicting the Holy Virgin with the infant Christ, flanked by the archangels Gabriel and Michael.

ith these words, spoken on Palm Sunday, the Armenian priest calls upon God to open the doors of salvation to His faithful servants. In a ritual re-enacted time and again over the course of centuries, the physical doors of every Armenian church have taken on a special role in the symbolic landscape of the liturgy.

They represent the portal to God’s grace; the border-land between the cacophony of the outer world, and the quiet harmony of the sanctuary; the gateway through which the faithful will march in triumph, to dispel the darkness with the light of Christ.

For generations, this rich symbolism of the church entry has captured the imaginations of Armenian architects and artisans. The 2010 Calendar of the Eastern Diocese of

the Armenian Church of America celebrates this essential feature of Armenian ecclesiastical design—a feature at once familiar, yet all too easy to overlook.

It begins with the magnificent new entry portal of New York’s St. Vartan Armenian Cathedral, installed in 2009, depicting the momentous transition in Armenian history which gave birth to the world’s first Christian nation.

Succeeding images portray church doorways from the Armenian homeland: portals of resplendent beauty; doors of rustic simplicity; passageways buffeted by time and eroded by the elements. All convey a common sense of majesty, as well as mystery, for the countless worshippers who regularly pass through these church doorways—to cross the threshold of faith.
