Urbatagirk Armenian First Printed Book & Book Gifting Day On February 19, Armenia celebrates Book Gifting Day. The gifting day is dedicated to the birthdate of an outstanding Armenian poet and writer, Hovhannes Tumanyan. Folk epic is the strongest field in Hovahanns Tumanyan oeuvre, the rest of his literary legacy contains of harmonically intertwined prose and poetry, stories and fables, lyric and ballad. In 1512 the first Armenian book, Urbatagirk (“The Book of Fridays”) was printed in Venice by Hakob Mehapart, the founder of Armenian printing, 57 years after the world first book was printed in Germany. On that time, Meghapart continued carrying out his activities, despite that Armenians were under the yoke of the Ottoman and Persian khans. Hakob Megapart, with the blessing of Pope Julius II in Venice, orders local artisans to cast Armenian alphabets and make colorful ornaments for them. He would create the book Urbatagirk look as attractive and picturesque as its handwritten manuscripts. By his request, each letter was made in several styles, in a single font in two colors red and black. 124 Pages Urbatagirk contains of medieval belief collections, prayer spells, half-fictional narratives, medicine recipes in rhymed prayers to protect from evil eye and danger. 14 | TourInfo

Handwritten Urbatagirks existed before its printing and were in great demand among the people. People had a belief that the book has potent healing power and were storing it at homes in secret places. The people who couldn’t read had memorized by hearing the texts of prayers. These collections were named after the word urbat “Friday” because on Friday, the sick people were taken to church and were read prayers to heal them. Friday is the day of the creation of man, and the day of the crucifixion of the Son of Man. Friday has dual features, it symbolizes good deed and atrocity. Friday enhances the effect of prayers and has an important role in religion and in church clergy. Friday is dedicated to the Holy Cross, which symbolizes Christ. These Armenian Flatbreads Stuffed With Greens Are the Perfect Snack This recipe for jingalov hats, the simple flatbread stuffed with a mix of greens, comes from “Lavash,” an Armenian cookbook by John Lee, Ara Zada and Kate Leahy. The authors got the recipe in Artsakh from Lilia Harutyunyan, a local baker who mixes tangy wild sorrel and dandelion greens with soft herbs such as chervil and cilantro, as well as earthy beet greens, chard and spinach. The key to a great bread is in the mix of greens, which gently steam inside the bread as it cooks on the stovetop. Wash and dry all the greens in a salad spinner to remove as much moisture as possible before chopping. The pomegranate seeds are optional.

FOR THE DOUGH: 1½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 1 teaspoon kosher salt ⅔ cup lukewarm water Sunflower oil or other neutral oil, for greasing FOR THE FILLING: 2 pounds chard, tough stems discarded 4 packed cups fresh cilantro, chervil and dill leaves and tender stems 4 packed cups radish greens and sorrel 6 spring onions (or 10 scallions), thinly sliced 3 tablespoons sunflower oil or other neutral oil 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 2 teaspoons kosher salt 2 handfuls pomegranate seeds (optional)

18 | TourInfo

PREPARATION 1 - Prepare the dough: In a medium bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups flour and the salt. Pour the lukewarm water into a large bowl, then gradually add the flour mixture, using your hands to incorporate. The dough will be sticky. 2 - Dust the counter with flour, turn dough onto it and knead gently until the surface becomes smooth and the dough stops sticking to your hands and counter, about 5 minutes. Roll the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly oiled bowl, turn it to coat, then cover it with a kitchen towel. Let it rest at room temperature for 20 minutes to 1 hour. 3 - Prepare the filling: Wash the greens, and use a salad spinner to dry them well. Chop the greens finely. Mix with spring onions, oil, lemon juice, paprika, salt and pomegranate seeds (if using), and set aside. Divide the rested dough into 4 portions, about 3 ounces each, and form each into a ball. 4 - On a lightly floured work surface, roll a ball into a very thin circle, about 8 inches wide, adding more flour as needed to prevent the dough from sticking. Place about 2 cups of filling in the center, then use your hands to pat it down into a round, leaving about a 1-inch border of dough. Pick up two opposite sides of the dough, and pinch them together over the center of the filling, from top to bottom, so the middle is wide and the ends form points. 5 - Firmly pinch the seam to make sure it’s sealed, then turn the dough over, and gently flatten it out with the palm of your hand so it resembles a deflated football, sealing any holes in the dough. It should be about 1/4- to-1/2-inch thick. If it’s thicker, use a rolling pin to smooth it out a little. Pinch shut any holes in the dough, then place on parchment or a lightly floured surface. Repeat with the remaining balls of dough. 6 - Heat a large cast-iron pan over medium-high. Working with one dough portion at a time, place the dough seam-side down in the center of the pan. Lower the heat to medium, and cook for about 3 minutes, until cooked and lightly browned in places. Flip, and cook the other side for 2 minutes. If the dough seems raw in places, flip and cook evenly. Repeat for the rest of the jingalov hats, and serve warm or at room temperature. February 2020 | www.ArmeniaTourInfo.com

The Widespread Armenian Phrases What Does Every Armenian Know but You May Not! “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his native language that goes to his heart.” ~ Nelson Mandela It may be challenging for a tourist to learn Armenian entirely. In fact, there is no actual need for that if you know couple of phrases that will lessen the gap between you and the locals. They are hard in interpreting, but once you catch up – will never forget. Do not be confused hearing “Jan” (Ջան) right after your name. Locals use it to indicate their respect, sympathy and kind intentions. Jan corresponds to dear or darling in English which can be an effective ice breaker if you use it while appealing to someone. You have likely seen a slow motion movie scene where a person throws oneself towards a bullet. This will be the literal picture of an Armenian idiom: ”Mernem janid” (Մեռնեմ ջանիդ) or “let me die on your body”. There is nothing wrong with this phrase.

20 | TourInfo

Moreover, it has exclusively positive connotation. So, a person saying it shows not just love and appreciation, but implies readiness to sacrifice his/her life for you. “Let me take away your pain” can be often heard among the locals. By saying “Tsavt tanem” (Ցավդ տանեմ) Armenians express their sincerity and love to their relatives and fellows. Even though this endearment phrase has small meaning overlap with the previous one, still it contains its own special message and reflects not just a person’s attitude, but the whole nation’s mentality. Feel free to intertwine the phrases with your language while communicating. They can become one of sufficient tools for making people more inclined to each other and, as a consequence, building intercultural bridge.

Trndez Presentation of 40 day-old Christ and the Holiday of Family and Upcoming Spring On the 13th of February, Armenia celebrates Trndez – national holiday that has deep roots in the history of Armenia and the hearts of its people. The holiday signifies the end of winter and hope for the fruitful and warm spring. The main attribute of Trndez is a bonfire which symbolizes Christ’s saving light, joy and protection form the evil. Traditionally, youth and newlyweds are responsible for setting the bonfire and mainly they are our “jumpers”. People believe that if a couple managed to jump over the fire holding a hand of the beloved, their family will never fall apart and will have endless happiness. While young people are jumping, older people sprinkle them with wheat and hemp seeds, which is also a wish for well-being and fertility. There is no need to worry whether the fire can burn your clothes. According to Armenian beliefs, the flame of the festive bonfire gives the energy of renewal and good luck in life to those whom it touched. Armenian pagan ancestors founded this tradition to worship the god of fire - Vahagn. There is a legend about him told by our elders. When people got tired of the harsh and freezing winter, they set fire in order to help the sun to rise and the beginning of spring to hasten. Vahagn being born out of the sun’s first divine light killed Vishap, the dragon, who was giving water only in exchange for a person’s life. Then the water was freed and the soil blossomed, that is how fire helped to conquer winter. 22 | TourInfo

After the adoption of Christianity, both the holiday’s name and the overall idea went through a slight change. Previously, people called the holiday Derendez which meant “haystack under your window”, now it is Trndez out of Ter (Տեր) – Our Lord. The holiday relates to the Tiarn’daraj as well and known as Candlemas in the West. It symbolizes the presentation of 40 day-old Christ child to the Temple in Jerusalem. This year it is celebrated on the 13th of February. It is a great opportunity to participate in the national holiday, especially when almost in each yard of Yerevan churches people organize active and joyful festivity. All in all, traditional rituals, dances and songs is a full immersion in the local culture in Armenia! February 2020 | www.ArmeniaTourInfo.com

Places where you can spend valentine’s day

Armenian St. Valentine is on 8th of February

The Day when Your Prospective Beloved Comes to Your Dream Did you know that Armenians have their own “St. Valentine’s Day”? Unlike St. Valentine which is always on February 14, St. Sargis’ date is movable and usually is celebrated between the end of January and the beginning of February. This year it is going to be on the 8th of February. On the St. Sargis’s eve single boys and girls eat salty biscuits (aghi blit) prepared by a happy married grandmother who sings good wishing songs during baking. Afterwards, they are not allowed to drink or eat anything. It is believed, one will marry the person who brings water in his/her dream. Another activity is taking place in Armenian families as well. On this day they put a plate of roasted wheat flour in a balcony or on the roof. According to the beliefs, St. Sargis passes over people’s houses at that night and his horse can leave its footprint on the flour. If one notices a horseshoe in the plate, the daydreams of the young boy or girl of the family will come true. On the actual holiday couples present each other cards, flowers and sweets. In churches after the name of St. Sargis, a liturgy is served and then a ceremony of blessing the young is held. Next to the churches are set small markets where traditional attributes and salty 28 | TourInfo

biscuits can be found. There is also the church of St. Sargis in Yerevan. During this holiday one of the main streets, Mesrop Mashtoc Avenue, is closed for couple of hours, so after the church service people lead by St. Sargis on his white horse can reach the Lover’s Park on Marshall Baghramyan Avenue where a concert is held. St. Sargis is one of the most revered saints of Armenian Apostolic Church and the entire nation. He is lovers’ saint who makes their dreams come true. St. Sargis (285-337) was originally a warrior from the province of Gamerk. There he lived and performed feats during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great. A beautiful legend about him has come down to our days. One evening, Sargis and his 39 soldiers and fellows returned with one more victory and celebrated it in a king’s castle. When the feast was finished, everyone went to sleep. But since the king did not like Christians, he commanded to forty young girls to kill the soldiers. Everyone carried out the order except for the one. She fell in love with Sargis and kissed him. He woke up and understood what happened. Then, Sargis saddled up his white horse, seated his beloved beside him, broke through the city gates and left the city. February 2020 | www.ArmeniaTourInfo.com
