The Celebration of Christmas in Armenia

The Great & Wondrous Mystery of Holy Nativity Christmas is a time when the “Box of Miracles” opens to grant everyone with love, kindness and realization of dreams. Our souls are filled with cherished feelings, strong belief and happy mood. And today, on this festive evening all Christians with their children and even small babies in their arms along with all who await the Savior hurry to the manger to see the newborn Jesus and the wise magi who came to present their gifts to Infant Jesus. The happy celebration on the feast’s eve is followed by a beautiful Holy Nativity performance in Etchmiadzin, the holy center of all Christian people. Today the whole Christian world resembles Bethlehem where the wise and the humble shepherds worship the newborn Jesus Christ lying in the little straw box. The performance imitates the nativity and epiphany of Christ: in Christian tradition, the Star of Bethlehem, also called the Christmas Star, revealed the birth of Jesus to the magi, and later led them to Bethlehem. The star appears in the nativity story of the Gospel of Matthew, where magi from the east are inspired by the star to travel to Jerusalem. Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Christ’s Nativity and Baptism on January 6 with solemn ceremonies. But in the whole world Christmas is celebrated on various days because of differences in Julian and Gregorian calendars. Catholic Church celebrates Christmas on December 25 according to the Julian calendar and the Orthodox Church celebrates it on January 7 according to the Gregorian calendar. It is interesting that until the 4th century Christians all over the world had been celebrating Christmas on January 6. But even after the adoption of Christianity many nations, especially the

8

Romans, continued celebrating the sun worship which fell on December 25. To prevent the pagan traditions in 336 the Roman Church declared December 25 the official birthday of Jesus Christ. Later Christmas day moved on December 25 nearly in the whole East and January 6 remained as the day of Epiphany and Christ’s Baptism. Adhering to ancient traditions Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates both holidays on January 6. The Orthodox Church begins celebrating the holiday on the evening of January 6 with the divine service in church and continues the festive ceremonies on January 7. According to the Armenian Church the week preceding Christmas is a lent period. People usually come out of the lent in the evening of January 5 with Divine Liturgy after which they take lights from church to their homes to burn them on the evening supper as a sign of divine light and blessing. Traditional Christmas dishes are fish as the symbol of Christianity, and rice made with raisins; rice symbolizes the whole mankind and the raisins are the selected ones, who were chosen by God. Next morning, on January 6 people visit church to be present at St. Liturgy after which they take part in the ceremony of “Water Blessing” that symbolizes the baptism of Christ in Jordan River. The miraculous water blessed by the Holy cross and sprayed with Sacred Chrism is distributed to people. Celebration and customs differ from country to country but the holiday remains favorite one in Christian world. Christmas is considered to be the most domestic holiday which is celebrated in a warm homely atmosphere. This is a period of time when all are happy and hurry to congratulate each other with the following words: “Christ is Born and Revealed Great Tidings to you and us”!

Dadivank Monastery

The Ancient Monastic Complex in Artsakh The Monastery of St. Dadi, otherwise called Dadivank or Khutavank is one of the most remarkable medieval architectural complexes of Armenia, especially due to its variety of valuable ecclesiastical and secular structures and with the uniqueness of the internal and external structural improvements. Dadi or Khuta Temple is constructed in a beautiful valley in the place where Gharabagh and Mrav mountain chains get closer by a sloppy hill on the left bank of Tartar river. Etymology of "Dadi" and "Khuta" names are explained in two ways as it is described in the found lithograph; one connected with the Armenian custom, the other connected with the district. According to the tradition the monastery was built in the first century AD in the place where St. Dadi was buried. St. Dadi was one of 70 disciples of Apostle St. Thaddeus and died in Artsakh while preaching Christianity there. The church was also named Khutavanq as it was built on a small hill (in Armenian “khut” means small hill). It is notable that the relics of St. Dadi Apostle were found under alter of one of the churches of the monastic complex during the excavation and renovation works in 2007. It is known that in XII century Armenian thinker and writer Mkhitar Gosh lived in Dadivank while working on his famous “Datastanagirk”, the first code of law in medieval Armenia. The monastic complex of Dadivank consists of two groups of structures; the ecclesiastical structures in the north and the secular buildings in the south: two bell towers, 2 ancient churches, monk cells, guest house, bookhouse, etc. The most important construction period of Dadi temple is the first half of 13th century, when the

18

construction of new buildings took place in the monastic complex. One of the first buildings of that period is considered to be Grigor Bishop’s vestibule-chapel. The inscription on the right side of the door shows that it was built in 1224 by Grigor Bishop. Numerous cross-stones were put inside the vestibule’s walls. However, the pearl of the monastic complex is St. Katoghike Astvatsatsin Church built by princess Arzukhatun, the wife of Verin Khachen's prince Vakhtang, in 1214. She built church in memory of her husband and 2 sons who died in the war. St. Katoghike is a church with cross-shaped plan, two-storey depositors inside and with rectangular composition outwardly. The dome and the facades are designed with the decorative arch ornaments. The southern wall of the church is covered with the sculptures of sons of Arzukhatun princess, Hasan and Grigor with the model of the church in their hands, and the bust portrait sculptures of St. Dadi and lord Vakhtang are on the eastern facade of St. Katoghike Church. St. Katoghike church houses valuable frescos which are the important and unique samples of the Armenian wall-painting art. The fresco of the southern wall presents the scene when the Christ hands the gospel to David Miraculous directing him to cure people. To the north there is a porch adjacent to the church which ends with belfry in the first floor of which one can see the two highly-artistic cross-stones decorated with ornaments. After the rehabilitation works of the great monastic complex took place in the end of the 20th century Dadivank monastery stands proudly in the arms of Artsakh mountains ready to welcome all visitors.

The Dendropark

The Most Beautiful Sights of Stepanavan Botanic Garden “If I were to be asked where on the planet Earth one can see the most incredible wonders, I would first of all say – Armenia… Armenia is a land of miracles.” These are the words of an American painter and writer Rockwell Kent who has fairly described the beauty of our country and nature as far as Armenia really has many graceful natural sights that cannot but delight the visitors. One of such miraculous beauties of Armenian land is “Sochut” botanical forest-reserve. “Sochut” dendropark of Stepanavan is one of the remarkable districts of Armenian nature. The Botanical garden is at 12 km from town of Stepanavan of Lori region. The huge part of dendropark of about 35 hectares is covered with natural forests embracing multi species plants. Most of them remind of the ornamented works of art with their beautiful look. Stepanavan dendropark is the first botanic garden of Armenia. It was established by Polish engineerforester Edmon Leonovich who had worked as the director of the botanical garden since 1984. Afterwards his son took the position of director. Local climate at dendropark is cool as the area of 1550 meters above the sea level. The collection of plants growing here represents a great variety. Most specimens were acquired from the botanic gardens as part of an international exchange programs with the Botanic Gardens in Tbilisi, Kiev, Moscow as well as Far East. Specimens were also obtained further afield from Germany, France, Portugal, USA. The collection of plants represents a great scienti-

24

fic development of species in uncommon climatic conditions. For 30 years continuously the scientists had tested 2500 species of plants try to find out those that would survive here. But only 500 species and forms of trees could succeed in growing in the cold climate that belong to 27 families and 115 species including Betula, Juglans, Cedrus deodara, Sequoia, etc. Californian Sequoias are of special interest; 5 of them are graciously planted together. The works held in dendropark are targeted to protect and expand the collection as well as to reproduce the species of high demand. The mild climate of this area, with its cool and wet summers and moderately cold winters is favorable to reproduce and distribute coniferous, precious and highly decorative species of trees and shrubs. Being in the health-improving zone the dendropark serves as pleasure resort and elegant place of nature. This district is a pleasant and peaceful place for the excursions all year round with your family or friends. The garden is charming in every season. In autumn, for example, you will see the beautiful harmony of colors, and since December the garden is filled with new verdure as all around is covered with white. In other words everyone can have a nice and interesting time walking in the garden and those who would like to spend their rest in the neighborhood of such beautiful nature, they are welcomed to spend charming rest in “Sochut” resort in the surroundings of the healing climate of botanic garden.

Yerevan: View from the Future

New Exhibition in the Cafesjian Center for the Arts With Yerevan: View From The Future the Cafesjian Center for the Arts continues its inter-museum cooperation project by organizing joint exhibitions with sister museums. The first exhibition in this program was Spring Motifs, organized in partnership with the Museum of Russian Art. This second exhibition was organized in partnership with Yerevan History Museum, marking the launch of 2012 Erebuni-Yerevan celebrations. The exhibition on view at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts presents fine and graphic artworks by renowned Armenian artists, portraying various scenes of Yerevan in the first half of 20th century, as well as photographs of modern-day Yerevan, symbolizing the progress of the city in retrospect to old Yerevan. “Loyal to its mission of bringing the best of the contemporary art to Armenia and presenting the best of Armenian culture to the world, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, through such joint exhibitions presented in the Center’s state-of-the-art galleries, will encourage the public to rediscover its cultural heritage and provide its sister museums with added visibility in the international community. I am confident that this innovative collaboration with the Yerevan History Museum will make it more accessible for the art-loving com-

30

munity – both during this exhibition and after its closure”, stated Vahagn Marabyan, Acting Executive Director of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. “The presented works are valuable not only from an artistic but also from a historical perspective, for they represent a city that has now become history. Owing to M. Saryan, P. Terlemezyan, H. Kojoyan, S. Arakelyan and other celebrated artists, the younger generation today enjoys an opportunity to form a true idea of the Yerevan they have never seen”, noted the Director of the Yerevan History Museum, Armine Sargsyan. Based on the “Yerevan: View from the Future” exhibition, new educational program “Yerevan of My Dreams” offered at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on October 18. The program is designed for children up to 15 years old. Participation in the program is free, with a prior reservation. The admission to the “Yerevan: View from the Future” exhibition is free.
