April 24 Remembrance of Victims 98 years There is a day in year that Armenians remember with pain and sorrow. This is April 24. On that day thousands of people come to Armenia from different corners of world to pay homage to the victims of 1915. The mass massacres and exiles organized by the Ottoman Empire became a real enormity which cost the lives of 1.5 million Armenians. It was the most tragic event of the 20th century which shocked the whole civilized world. According to the beforehand planned program the Ottoman Government exiled the defenseless people from their lands to sentence them to deportation and starvation. In 1965 the memorial monument Tsitsernakaberd was built in memory of the victims of the genocide, and it became an integral part of architecture of Yerevan beco-ming a sacred place. Being situated in a high mountainous place the memorial rises on a forested hill as an eternal witness of the atrocities against a whole nation. The monument includes 12 towering stones as the symbols of 12 evacuated provinces of Western Armenia with the Eternal fire burning in the middle; “Revival of Armenia” obelisk and the Museum devoted to the genocide – “The Temple of Eternity” which opened its doors in 1995. The first floor of the museum is subterranean which includes the repository of scientific values, library and the hall after Komitas. The map of Armenian plateau is engraved on the wall of the first chamber, the second one presents the testimonies of witnesses and documents about the massacres. There is also a gallery for temporary exhibitions of famous Armenian artist Jansem (H. Semerjyan). The last hall of the muse-

um is an open-air yard which is unique for ancient Armenian buildings. The Armenian Genocide has been recognized by Uruguay, France, Germany, Argentina, The Netherlands, Slovakia, Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Lebanon, Sweden, Belgium, Greece, Cyprus, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Venezuela, Chile, Australia and Vatican. Recently the French Parliament passed the bill criminalizing the denial of Genocide. The Government of RA, considering the fate of the coming generations, tries to find the borders of collaboration with the descendant of Ottoman Empire for which the president of RA accepted a decision to open the borders between Armenian and Turkey to improve the economic and political relations between our countries. But this process is stopped as the Turkish government refused to sign the agreement without any preconditions. There are other facts proving the Genocide together with the documents such as the films of Armenian and foreign directors: “La Masseria Della Allodole” by brothers Taviani, “Ararat” by Atom Egoyan, “Mayrig” by Henri Verneuil, and “Forty Days of Musa Dagh” by Sarki Muradyan. Now an American film by Gor Kirakosyan “Lost and Found in Armenia” is to be shot in Armenia. This bilingual film which finds a balance between comedy and human emotion will be ready in 2012. World famous celebrities also struggle for the recognition of Armenian Genocide. The artists struggling for peace are Stevie Wonder, Michael Stone, Eric Benet, Alexia Vassiliou, Chaka Khan and Arto Tunjboyajyan who participated in the first concert of the concert program “Never Again” organized by popular artist of RA Flora Martirosyan in memory of the victims of Genocide in “Gibson” amphitheater of Los Angeles in 2011. This large project is aimed to make the whole world be aware of the vandalism of 1915 and call to challenge of hope and peace before the 100th anniversary of Armenian Genocide. However, the civilized world spare no effort to undertake any method so that the world community and especially the governments can recognize the indescribable tragedy of the 20th century which has only one supreme aim that is the of repetition of such a criminal act.

Treasures of Artsakh Jermajur Hot Springs Discover the Healing Traits of the Royal Mineral Sources

Natural warm water springs that flow from the underground are considered to be one of the most visited travel destinations in Republic of Nagorno Karabagh. Town Jermajur, located at an altitude of 2200-2400 meters, is rich in natural hot springs. The mineral water springs of Jermajur are known for their healing properties; for which people have always visited this small town since ancient times to have a bath in its warm water basins. Another interesting fact… The name Jermajur seems to be chosen to give the exact description of the natural treasures of the resort village. Here is the origin of the name “Jermajur” which means “hot water”. The town of Jermajur is situated on the bank of Tartar River at 20 km to the South from Karvachar city. Tartar River, also known as Trtu River, begins from the slopes of the northern ranges of Artsakh and the southern ranges of

Mravsar, at an altitude of 3158 meters. It flows through Mardakert and Karvatchar districts. Tartar is a mountainous river of 200km length, most part of which passes through the canyonshaped, deep gorge. Tartar River is a perfect place for the amateurs of river rafting, especially in spring months when the river overflows. The pool is located on the bank of Tartar River, not far from Karvachar City (about 20km). The road to Jermajur is also worth seeing. It spreads across rocks and forests along Tartar River bank. The river flows through a wonderful canyon where the forests and rocks exist side by side. Not far from the riverside you can find another glo-rious treasure of Artsakh-Dadivank Monastery (9-13th centuries). Magic natural warm waters effusing from the underground are situated on the bank of Tartar River. Water temperature is 60 °C independently from the seasons of the year. In summer months it is always possible to see people swimming in the basin of warm mi-neral waters which have great healing power. Jermajur water is similar to Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic) and Jermuk (Armenia) with its healing features. Our visitors are welcomed to feel the healing power of these waters. So, if you are in Armenia, be sure to visit Artsakh and take a bath in the miraculous hot water basins of Jermajur. Then do not forget to email us and share your experience with us. Wishing you great travels.

Welcome To Armenia

The First Republic of Armenia was founded on May 28, 1918. The necessity to have own currency arose for the stability of the economic state of the country. However, because of lack of necessary printing in the country it was determined to print bank-notes of the first Republic abroad. Originally it was decided to print them in Paris, but because of poor quality the printing of bank-notes was entrusted to publishing-house “Waterloo and Sons” in London which carried out the job. Because of short life of the First Republic which lasted only 2,5 years the bank-notes were not put into circulation, but they still remain the interesting samples of Armenian painting due to their design and high artistic value. The author of illustrations of the bank-notes is prominent Armenian artist Arshak Fetvachyan who remaining loyal to Armenian national painting, created really valuable samples. The bank-notes of value of 50, 100 and 250 roubles portray the emblems and features peculiar to Armenian culture. The bank-notes of 50 roubles worth were designed according to Armenian architectural style, the peculiar features of which are ornamental decoration of the front, the images of fantastic animals: dragons, griffons, presenting the decorations of ancient Armenian temples. The bank-note of 100 roubles worth was illustrated in accordance with the principles of Armenian miniature: stylized birds, rich design that resemble lace and so on. Mount Ararat and an eagle hitting a snake by a sword were also portrayed on these banknotes. This emblem was adopted in Armenia still before the rule of Arshakyan Dynasty. The bank-note of 250 roubles worth was decorated in the front with the images of griffons, symbols of eternity, angels holding a lamp in one hand and a sword in the other, who win the monster, and a woman dressed in national dress (taraz) spinning a winch was portrayed on the opposite side of the banknote. Though not being applied in their sense, these bank-notes played an important cultural role. With their illustrations they became an integral part of Armenian painting; and now they are exhibited in various museums as the samples of cultural life of the time.
