What makes a vacation perfect? Is it the beautiful weather? Perhaps it’s an item you have searched for everywhere and finally found – Yes!—the epitomizes the entire trip. Or maybe it’s just the simple little mint left on your pillow after a long day. Whatever it is, escaping your world via plane, train or automobile allows for a change of scenery that inevitably puts you in a good mood. A vacation can be a chance to lavish yourself with gifts, allow yourself time to take a leisurely stroll through a museum, and even a chance to forget that stringent diet and treat yourself to dessert (no, really, go ahead—you deserve it). May is also the most victorious month for Armenians. The first day of May is already a holiday: Armenia with some other countries celebrates The International Day of Workers. May 9 in 1992 was a crucial day for Armenians: this day the city Shushi was set at a liberty, and besides on this special day we celebrate the victory of the Soviet Union in World War 2. And finally May 28 is the day of establishment of the first Armenian Republic. In May we are going to take part in an exhibition in Ajaria, Georgia where our print run will be represented for the participants and visitors of the exhibition to get acknowledged with the work we do. TourInfo works too actively and in fact it has its’ labour fruits. Right in the airport will be opened Armenia Visitor Center where young advisers will help everyone, who land in Armenia, to organize their leisure time in a right and effective way. TourInfo always cooperates with many centers and is ready now to have a special page for Medical traveling .which will be much more interesting for the people seeking medical treatment abroad and especially in this area. Our accessible magazine always tries to appear with innovations and novelties. It’s already the second edition where you can find about a national dish of one country, get an overall information about its’ ingredients, recipy and final look. All in all, there are loads of things to enjoy this month. As always our book is packed with ideas of how to see the best Armenia has to offer. Enjoy your stay and safe travels! ah@ati.am May 2013

Glorious Victories of May 9

Great Patriotic War and Liberation of Shushi

The history of the Armenian people is full of heroic pages. Two glorious victories, which we celebrate on May 9 - the liberation of Shushi and the victory in the Great Patriotic War - come to complete these heroic pages. The liberation of Shushi has great historical significance which is connected with one of the most valiant pages of the newest history of Armenia – the victory in the liberation battle of Artsakh. The city of Shushi played a great strategic role and its liberation sharply changed the motion of the war. During those days Shushi became the gate to Stepanakert, and giving up Shushi would mean the immediate invasion by the enemy to the capital of Karabagh. So, one of the most perfectly organized operations of Armenian military art – the liberation of city-fortress Shushi was realized on May 8-9 of 1992. The military operations were organized and directed by the Armenian talented commanders and the heroes of liberation struggle by the management of legendary general A. Ter-Tadevosyan (Commandos). Taking into consideration the predominant forces of the rival it was a “crazy” thing by the Armenians to begin the battle but as it is said the best way of protection is attacking. The imple-

mentation of this heroic step was carried out by the commanders of the 4 fronts who put the glorious end to the military operation named “Wedding in the Mountains”, and at dawn of May 9 they entered Shushi. The Armenian Tricolor waved on the dome of Ghazanchetsots Cathedral – the ornament of Shushi, and Karabagh gained its factual independence by which the Armenians reaffirmed their right to live in the Armenian land. It is interesting that the name of this city-fortress which is situated at 11 km from Stepanakert derives from the word “Shosh” which in the dialect of Artsakh means “the highest sprout of the tree”. So, the city was named Shushi due to its high geographical position. The 9th of May is the day of victory and peace, the victory which was erected by the army of Soviet Union in the World War Two. During the war 500 000 Armenians replenished the army of the Soviet Union; 106 of them became the heroes of the Patriotic War. Besides, the Armenian army gave three marshals and one admiral. Nowadays, all the former Soviet countries celebrate May 9 as the day of victory, and the Armenians will always celebrate this glorious day as a double holiday, as the victory day in World War Two when in Berlin the Armenian soldiers danced our national dance “kochari”, and as the day of liberation of Shushi. Each year on this day the Armenians visit the Victory Monument to pay their homage to the victims of the war at the “Monument of the Unknown Soldier”. Then, after visiting the Mother Armenia Military Museum all people begin celebrating the holiday with great solemnity.

Hollywood Non-Stop The State Youth Orchestra of Armenia is pleased to present an exceptional musical project entitled “Hollywood Non-Stop” which pursues the aim of engaging youth in classical music through popular genres. During the concert the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia will perform soundtracks of Hollywood movie masterpieces. The start of the project was launched in 2012. One of the main purposes of the Youth orchestra is to involve young people in the classic music and increase interest towards it. But it certainly is not an easy task. Fortunately, the idea of the project “Hollywood Non-Stop” emerged. As it is not possible to introduce the symphonic music directly to unfamiliar young listeners, it was decided to initially give them an opportunity to listen to well known soundtracks from Hollywood movies, such as “Die Another Day”, “Shrek”, “The Lord of the Rings”, “The Return of the King”, “Star Wars”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Mission”, “West Side Story”, “Braveheart”, “An American in Paris”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Jurassic Park”, “Once Upon a Time in America”, “Godfather”, “Breakfast at Tiffany's”, “Schindler's List”, “Mission: Impossible”, pieces from the operas “Porgie and Bess” and

“Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin, etc. The start of the project was set to be March 15, 2012 and was successfully held in 8 higher educational institutions in Yerevan .More than 6000 students listened to the compositions of contemporary musical school, by the representatives of which are such names as Monty Norman, Greg Camp, Howard Shore, George Gershwin, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, Leonard Bernstein, Nino Rota, Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, many others. The concert program was continuous. Works by internationally acclaimed film composers were also presented to the audience of RA marzes. And soon, on May 15 and 16, final chords of the “Hollywood non-stop” will sound at Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. During the concert the audience should expect positive surprises: totally new compositions not ever performed by SYOA. We are confident that these concerts will also be accompanied by overcrowded venues. For more information and tickets, please call (+374 77) 575 055.

May 28 The Day of Independence The Heroic Battles and the Victories

May is a month of victories for the Armenians. The history shows that the Armenian people erected all the most important victories in May. And now continuing the tradition of spring holidays, on May 28 we celebrate the independence of the First Republic of Armenia. Armenia lost its statehood after the fall of Cilician Kingdom in the 14th century. It is obvious that a nation with freedom-loving spirit like the Armenians could not tolerate that situation for a long time, and 6 centuries later the Armenian state must have been regained and renovated. The independence day of the First Armenian Republic is officially celebrated since 1992. The Armenians gained the desired statehood and independence due to the inflexible will-power, clearness of purpose and whole-hearted struggle. The battle was born in a difficult period for the Armenians, when the people had hardly avoided the extermination program of Ottoman Empire. But they found the strength to struggle for the sake of their independence. The reestablishment of the statehood of the country was gained by a number of heroic battles. The regular Armenian troops and the detachments made by volunteers were fighting in three fronts – Gharaqilisa,

12

Welcome To Armenia

Bash-Aparan and Sardarapat. They managed to end the three battles with glorious victories. Here are the victories due to which the Armenian people reclaimed the long-wished independence. On May 28 of 1918 the National Council of Armenia confirmed the decision to establish the Independent Republic of Armenia. The president of the Council Avetis Aharonyan announced the declaration of independence of Armenia to found the First Armenian Republic in a territory of 12000 square km. The Armenians, who have been longing for the independence for nearly 600 years were triumphant. In spite of the short life of only 2.5 years of the First Republic of Armenia, the declaration of independence was turning point in the political, religious and cultural life of Armenia as the parliament was elected, the government was formed and the Armenian Tricolor was adopted as the natioal flag of the state. Traditionally we always remember the victories erected by our heroes and with great solemnity celebrate the independence of the First Armenian Republic on May 28. The high-ranking officers and the ordinary people pay their homage to the victims of the heroic battles after which they participate in various events that are organized near the Sardarapat Monument, the memorial to the battle of Sardarapat. People also organize pilgrimages to the memorial of the battles of Bash-Aparan which is situated in Lori region. Of course, the main celebrations, concerts and the festive firework are held in the Republic Square in Yerevan.

New Project Healthcare Globalization Our Tourists are to be Healthy as a Horse Tour Info as one of the leading magazines in the field of tourism from now and then presents in its’ pages information about Medical tourism and medical services in Armenia especially for the tourists. First of all let’s understand what does the term Medical tourism mean? Medical tourism (MT) is defined as a patient movement from highly developed nations to less developed areas of the world for less expensive medical care, bypassing unaffordable services offered in their own communities. Medical tourism is different from the traditional model of international medical travel where patients generally journey from less developed nations to major medical centers in highly developed countries for medical treatment that is unavailable in their own communities. Factors that have led to the increasing popularity of medical travel include the high cost of health care, long wait times for certain proce-

dures, the ease and affordability of international travel, and improvements in both technology and standards of care in many countries. Armenia is one of the countries that has a high equipped and professional Medical education and every year gives a lot of new talented professors in this field and this is a country where Medical treatment is comparatively of low price. Medical tourists come from a variety of locations including Europe, the Middle East, Japan, the United States, and Canada. Services typically sought by travelers include elective procedures as well as complex specialized surgeries such as joint replacement (knee/hip), cardiac surgery, dental surgery, and cosmetic surgeries. Individuals with rare genetic disorders may travel to another country where treatment of these conditions is better understood. However, virtually every type of health care, including psychiatry, alternative treatments, convalescent care and even burial services are available.

Armenia is naturally and culturally rich and considered as an open-museum country. Every year an increasing number of tourists visit Armenia with different prospects, but recently a significant number of them are looking for a cheaper way of completing their dental treatment during their visit due to the high quality of dental services that one can find in Armenia. Avanta as a modern center of dentistry and

implantology provides state-of-the-art dental services and treatment for people who require implants, minor oral surgeries, orthodontic treatment, endodontic treatment, fixed and removable prostheses including crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays and onlays and other cosmetic dentistry. Our dental clinic is equipped with world famous German dental equipment and technology and also with a digital panoramic x-ray machine to

105_103 4/30/2013 3:51 PM Page 19

Ourservices: achieve a precise diagnosis that is for the best convenience for the patients . On top of these, the good news for the dental tourist is that Avanta is the only clinic in Armenia that delivers all ceramic crowns and veneers in one appointment with cutting age German technology called CEREC. But what makes Avanta special from other clinics is that our center is fulfilled with highly qualified specialists who periodically participate in international dental symposia and follow the novelties in dentistry. Paris, LosAngeles, Monaco, Athens, Loma Linda, Moscow, Berlin, Shanghai, Glasgow, Dubai, London – above is an incomplete list of the places where the dentists of Avanta have passed their requalification. Avanta has the honor to announce that we are the official dental center that provides dental services and treatments to many international organizations and foreign embassies’ staff and their families, such as U.S.A, British and Russian Embassies. Avanta is grateful for their trust. People from Russia, USA, Europe, the Middle East, particularly the UAE, Kuwait and Oman seeking for high quality of dental treatments with exceptional price are usually visiting Avanta, that’s why the number of our overseas patients has increased enormously in the last few years.
