"Ring of Fire"

Opera in 2 acts

In the open air area of the Fortress of Shoushi

O

1 September at 20:00

n 1st of September the opera of well-known Armenian composer Avet Terteryan "Ring of Fire" (libretto - by Vladimir Shahnazaryan based on the novel "Forty-first" after Boris Lavrenyov and the poems of Yeghishe Charents) will be premiered in Shoushi fortress, in Artsakh under the auspices of First Lady Rita Sargsyan, the ministries of Culture of Armenia and Republic of Mountainous Karabakh and with the support of State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre after Al. Spendiaryan. It is dedicated to the Independence day of Artsakh and the 85th birthday of Avet Terteryan. Terteryans' family roots originated in Shoushi. The opera "Ring of Fire" was written by Avet Terteryan in 1967. In the same year it was performed in State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre after Aleksander Spendiaryan. The work is based on the events of the novel "Forty-first" after Boris Lavrenyov. It was the same novel upon which the movie was shot by Grigori Chukhra, which won the special prize at Cannes film festival in 1957. A well-known journalist, the special reporter of union newspaper Vladimir Shahnazaryan was informed that Terteryan was looking for a plot for his 1-st opera in a most enthusiastic way and being impressed by the success of the film, focused the composre's attention on this novel. What was important to Terteryan in this story? The heroes. Big and extraordinary characters, keeping special traditional backgrounds and the whole era in general. The characters are filled with the majestic feeling - love, born within the atmosphere of a rigid battle waged for concepts.

8

Welcome To Armenia

Avet Terteryan

"This is an opera of situations: about war, peace and love",- mentions Avet Tertertyan, talking about the opera. There are several personages: the girl, the officer, the choir and the reciter. The latter starts the performance with the poem of Yeghishe Charents and creates an atmosphere of sentimental tensions and a battle waged for high concepts. For the first time the opera was staged by the principal director of State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre after Al. Spendiaryan Aram Katanyan, stage director Vahagn Bagratouni and scenographer Minas Avetisyan. The opera was a glorious victory of the Theater and the composer and marked the beginning of the brilliant career of Avet Terteryan. He introduced the audience a completely unknown world of sounds where the remote voices of ancient Armenian rituals revived and sounded anew, retaining the enthusiasm of folk feasts as well as sorrow for inconsolable losses of the Armenian people. He was the first to include ancient Armenian instruments in the symphonic orchestra, thus we hear zourna and duduk in the Third Symphony, qamancha in the Fifth one, and dup in the Seventh Symphony. These symphonies together with the Second and the Eighth ones were many times performed on the Armenian, Russian and European prominent stages. These works were included into the program of international festivals held in different countries and concerts dedicated to the composer. The opera performance in Shoushi turned into the brightest musical event in Artsakh and Armenia and became a unique phenomenon that enriched the palette of our country's cultural life. Thanks to enthusiasm and energy of the artistic director of this remarkable project Sarineh Avtandilyan we have seen new performances for two years in a row. These performances celebrate the Independence Day and at the same time commemorate those people who gave their lives for the Victory. With all our heart we wish the performers inexhaustible imagination and wish new vivid impressions to the spectators in the atmosphere of an unforgettable feast!

Grape Blessing Day

Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary

Among the most beloved ceremonies in the Armenian Traditional Feasts is the ceremony of Grape Blessing, which is held on Sunday usually following or preceding August 12. The occasion on which we celebrate the blessing of grapes is a major feast day called “Assumption of the St. Mary” and underscores a wonderful insight unique to Christianity. The story of assumption concerns St. Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, as after having completed her life on earth, she was taken up in body and soul assumed into Heaven. According to Samvel Mkrtchyan, who is the author of a number of ethnographic works, the history of Grape Blessing dates back to the paganism that had much in common with the traditional Christmas and especially with the beliefs of abundance and richness of fruits and grapes particularly, which was believed to be the most noble one among the other fruits. Moreover, on the Feast of the Assumption of St. Mary the harvest for the entire year was blessed on that day. Due to another sources Grapes do have a certain symbolic significance in Christianity, think of all the references which Jesus made to wine and “the vine and the branch”, references which are still repeated in the Divine Liturgy. Time passed and the pagan holiday was included in the calendar of the Armenian Church. Grape has the symbolic significance, as this is considered as “forbidden fruit”, the case with the apple during Vardavar, and people must refuse to eat grapes until priest blessed the fruit. In the past Grape Blessing ceremony took place mainly in the gardens, when the priest used to visit the church garden with the scissors in one hand and the cross in the other, to make grape blessing ceremony. Only after the

10

Welcome To Armenia

ceremony, people would take the plates and taste the blessed grapes. The ceremony was accompanied with pilgrimages, and people used to sacrifice sheep and cock as promised “matagh” (oblation), because Holy Mother was not only considered an embodiment of worship, but she was also powerful and could make whishes could true. Consequently, people went to the “Holy Stone of St. Mary” to cure illnesses. According to a legend, St. Mary used to have a rest by relying on a stone, when she was pregnant. That is why, pregnant women came the very place, relied on the stone in order to easily release (have children). St. Mary also helped people during drought. For example, in Gyumri the priest used to go to the field with the portrait of St. Mary in his hands, followed by the crowd of people who were crying and praying for the rain. It’s noteworthy that no case was finished without having rain after all. No doubt, the Armenian women have always considered the Holy Virgin as an embodiment of virtue, pious motherhood and as the protector of family sacredness.

This tradition was widely spread among people living in Musaler, who used to make mataghblessing on Grape Blessing Day, and people in Meghri made a real fete accompanied with dances, songs and plays. Therefore, they would make a race marathon to country house Leashkvaz, and the one who first came there was called a “fox”, and the latest one – a “horseshoe adjuster or hegin”. This year the feast is observed on August 17, and the following Monday is “merelots”- people go to cemetery to pay tribute to their dead relatives.

"Caucasus" Boutique Hotel

New Caucasus Hotel has opened its doors

No doubt, “Caucasus” Complex and Tavern have earned great reputation both within the locals and tourists of Armenia. There is hardly anyone who even if has not visited, hasn’t at least heard of this gorgeous place, which stands out with its extraordinary design and warm atmosphere. Today “Caucasus” Complex has opened the doors of new “Caucasus Boutique” 5-star hotel, which is very joyous, however what standards does the service satisfy? The Hotel is built in full accordance with standards of five-star hotels, which are accepted by the legislative acts of Republic of Armenia. According to them, our hotel does not only have building and furniture of required standard, but a five-star service which can be met in all five-star hotels abroad. Everything is done so that the rest of our guests is sterling. The complex has 46 numbers, which may be categorized in 6 different groups, from standard numbers, to presidential suites. All numbers located on the second and third floors have open balconies, with beautiful view on Mount Ararat. In the territory you can also find an open-air swimming pool, a massage hall, a fitness hall, and conference halls which are able to contain up to 800 people. In spite of being a small town, Yerevan does not seem to have lack of hotels. During 2012-2013 only, 9 big hotels started to operate. Is there no worry that Caucasus Complex will lack visitors? We don't have such worries as we will lead a strategy that we use in Tavern and Restaurant

12

Welcome To Armenia

Complex. I think the previous 10 years have shown that no matter how many catering facilities there are in town, Caucasus Tavern is always the best; and the experience of past 2 years has shown that Caucasus Complex is also among the bests among restaurant complexes. The same will be with the Hotel Complex, we have no doubt, as we have always managed to keep our prices on the level with services, that is we have always tried to supply with high quality service, with the most moderate prices. I think you know that you are very accessible for tourists through cooperation with TourInfo Magazine. What do you think, how will Caucasus Hotel stimulate development of tourism in Armenia? We are planning to have wedding packages, giving people a possibility to come and celebrate their wedding as well as other events in Armenia in our restaurants, and, why not, use our hotel services as well. In this way we will bring changes to Armenian Market. Is it possible that the hotel will have branches in other big towns of Armenia? We do not have such plans yet.

We all invite you to celebrate your important events and spend your holidays in Caucasus Complex, where you can feel the spirit of true Caucasus.

The interview was held with Chief Executive Officer Sergey Harutunyan

Cappadocia

The history of Cappadocia has begun since the time man first set foot on this site that was formed by the frozen lava flown from mountains Hasan and Erdizhies about million years ago. In 1956 excavations were carried out here. The statue of Mother of God, women jewelry, colorful ceramics and dishes made of clay found during the excavation gave an idea of the culture of the people who had lived here. Bones and pieces of burnt clay dating back to 3500 B.C. were found here. Some things dating back to the Bronze Age were also found. The mixing of Hittite tribes and the people of Nesha gave birth to the Hittite kingdom with Khatushash as its capital, which survived until 1200 B.C.. The most complete information about the Hittite culture can be gained from the written inscriptions which were found during the excavations at Khatushash and Kayseri. The invasion of Anatolia started in 1200 B.C.. The Hittite kingdom collapsed. After that some small separate counties were formed, which didn’t have a united kingdom for a long time. This territory was under the Persian rule since 547 B.C. At that

time the word “Kaptatukia” that means “a land of handsome horses” came into being. In 333 B.C. Alexander of Macedon captured Cappadocia and appointed a Persian called Sabiktas governor. After a year Ariarefes the First became the king of Cappadocia and during his reign the territory of the country expanded to the Black Sea in the north and to the river Euphrates in the east. In 47 B.C. Cesar declared war against the Pontian kingdom and captured the north side, placed his army in Mazak and named the city Kayseri. Since 17 B.C. Kayseri remained a Roman province. St. Gregory and St. Tsasili began to expand Christianity rather quickly and considered the construction of churches and cathedrals very important. The churches and cathedrals had no architectural values. In 310 B.C. discontent began in Rome. Putting down the entire discontent king Konstant became Roman Emperor and gave the Christians freedom of actions. After that Christianity began to expand rapidly and the construction of churches and cathedrals continued. The inner walls were decorated with frescoes in biblical themes. The construction of churches lasted till the 12th century.

717-718 the army of Omar Khalif fought his way to Anatolia and reached Kayseri causing great losses to Byzantium army. Though the caves were used as shelters, they lost their importance after the invasion of the Seljuk in 1071. After the establishment of Ottoman rule the Christian congregation in Cappadocia stopped existing.

Goreme

The Christians who escaped the Arabic invasion and hid in this place, named it “Gore me” which means “May no one see”. Various cliffs and cave churches attract visitors’ attention. In 6-9th centuries Goreme was considered one of the largest centres of Christianity and there were about 400 churches. In some churches frescoes are well preserved as they haven’t been touched by the sun.

This place is famous for its 400 underground cities which served as shelters to escape the Arabic invasions. There are several many storied cities with all conveniences. The front doors are made of

huge stones. They are opened from inside. All the cities and houses had secret entrance. There are houses with 18-20 floors under them.

More than 100000 people worked on the construction of Egyptian Pyramids for 30 years and it’s not known how many people work and how long it took to build underground city Derinkulu. These underground cities are considered the 8th wonder of the world.
