VAN-THE CITY OF ARMENIAN DREAMS
Lake Van
Cappadocia
Van, one of the ancient cities in the world, has survived till our days. Van was first mentioned in the 9th century B.C. It was founded by the king of Urartu, Sarduri the First (835-825BC). He built the fortress of Tushpa on the shore of Lake Van and made it the capital of his kingdom. One of the numerous Urartian monuments is "Mher’s Door" on which cuneiform inscription of Urartian king of Ishpuini has been preserved. It represents the list of Urartian Gods, among them the main gods Khaldi, Teysheba and Shivini. The 72km long channel of king Menua which supplied the city with fresh water is also famous. Van is located at the height of 1700 meters above the sea level, on the eastern shore of Lake Van, which is famous not only for its beauty and charm, but also for its unique chemical composition of water which contains high concentrations of sodium carbonate. Besides, the water in the lake changes its colour depending on the season of year, making it one of the most popular natural attractions in Western Armenia. There are a lot of small and four large picturesque islands: Lim, Ktuts, Arter and Akhtamar, each of them beautiful in its

own way. On Akhtamar Island one can see one of the magnificent examples of Armenian architecture -Saint Cross Church, built in the early 10th century by the court architect of King Gagik ArtzruniManuel. Van is also known among the zoologists and biologists all over the world for its rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. The region is also famous for its unique bread of cats. Historically Van was in region Tosp, the province of Vaspurakan in Western Armenia. From 908 to 1021 Vaspurakan was an independent kingdom with the head of king Artsruni. From the first half of the 16th century, after being captured by Turkish troops Van became the centre of Van vilayet. The city consisted of two parts - the city itself and Aygestan which was divided into seven districts. According to the census of 1914 Van had a population of 22470 Armenians and 15000 Turks. The main occupation of the Armenians was crafts and trade. Goldsmiths, blacksmiths, gunsmiths, craftsmen enjoyed the greatest popularity. There were several workshops. In the early 19th century there were 12 churches, 10 of which were

active/ servicing. In 1914 there were 8 educational institutions. The Protestants, the American, German, Dominican missions also have their schools. About 55% of more than 12000 Armenians were literate. In the district of Aygestan besides the above mentioned missions there were also English, Persian, Russian and French consulates. In the 1860s Mkrtich Khrimyan who later became the Catholicos of All Armenians Mkrtich the First, started his activities in Varagavank. Varagavank was one of the great shrines in Armenia, as according to the legend here was preserved part of Jesus Christ's cross which was brought to Armenia by Holy Virgin Hripsime at the end of the 3rd century. In 1870-80s the secret organization “the Union of the salvation", "Black Cross", "Squire" acted in Van. In 1880 van became the centre of activities of Mkrtich Portugalyan, the founder and editor of the newspaper Armenia, which was published in the French city of Marseille, as well as Mkrtich Avetisyan, the founder of the first Armenian political party "Armenakan".

During the first massacres the Armenians in Van survived despite the heavy losses and thanks to heroic self-defense. On the 3rd of June, 1896 and on the following days 546 Armenians were killed, 1514 Armenian houses were robbed. During 1915 Genocide the Armenians freed themselves from the Turkish rule due to heroic self-defense which lasted nearly a month. On the 6th of May Russian troops and Armenian volunteer unions entered the city and the next day Governorate of Van was set up with the head of Aram Manukyan. However, the unexpected retreat of Russian troops because of some political reasons forced the Armenians to leave the city and move to Eastern Armenia. The Turkish troops completely destroyed the city and massacred the Armenians who had not managed to escape. When the Russian troops captured Van again, only a small part of people was able to return their hometown. In February 1918, during the new invasion of Turkish troops, the Armenians finally left the city. Today, Van is one of the largest cities in eastern part of Turkey and has a population of 310000 people.
